Interpretation of light trap catches of moths is complicated by daily variation in weather that alters flight activity and numbers caught. Light trap efficiency is also modified by wind and fog, and daily weather may effect absolute abundance (numbers actually present). However, actograph experiments and other sampling methods suggest that changes in daily activity are large by comparison to changes in absolute abundance. Daily variation in weather (other than wind and fog) is therefore a form of sampling error in absolute abundance estimates. We investigated the extent of this sampling bias in 26 years of population dynamics from 133 moth species. In a subset of 20 noctuid and geometrid species, daily numbers caught were positively correlated with temperature in 14 species, and negatively correlated with rainfall in 11 species. The strength of correlations varied between species, making it difficult to standardize catches to constant conditions. We overcame this by establishing how weather variation changed with time and duration of the flight period. Species flying later in the summer and for shorter periods experienced more variable temperatures, making sampling error greater for these species. Of the 133 moth species, those with shorter flight periods had greater population variability and more showed significant temporal density dependence. However, these effects were weak, which is encouraging because it suggests that population analyses of light trap data largely reflect factors other than sampling error.  相似文献

Paederus fuscipes Curt., a common and widely distributed insect throughout the world, was found to be an aggressive leafhopper predator in rice fields in West Malaysia. Studies were conducted to determine natural field density levels, host preferences, feeding patterns, behavior, and biology. Feeding on leafhopper nymphs appears to be density-dependent within certain population levels.  相似文献

Pheromone monitoring could provide unique spatial and temporal information about rare and threatened insect species for conservation purposes. Pheromone traps may be especially valuable in detecting fluctuations and declines in vulnerable species, if trap catch can be related to population density. We exploited the pheromone-kairomone system of the hermit beetle Osmoderma eremita and its predator, the red click beetle Elater ferrugineus, to monitor variation in their flight activity during 7 years (2001–2002, 2005–2009). Spatial and temporal flight activity of O. eremita and E. ferrugineus were highly correlated over individual trap replicates and trap days. Yearly flight activities of both species were correlated within two core sites included during all years of the study, and positively affected by temperature both within and between years. Flight activity could not be directly translated to variation in abundance in either species, however. Dispersal rate was likely the main factor explaining flight activity in O. eremita. Normalizing the flight activity of E. ferrugineus against that of O. eremita did not eliminate most of the variability, however, suggesting that flight activity of E. ferrugineus was governed both by dispersal rate and by population density. Higher fluctuations in population density of E. ferrugineus likely render it more vulnerable to local extinction, which may explain the greater rarity of this species. We suggest that preserving large assemblies of suitable hollow trees would be absolutely essential for buffering against stochastic population fluctuations and securing the long-term persistence of E. ferrugineus.  相似文献

A winter population of house sparrows at a farm fed on barley seed in two distinct types of habitat: cattlesheds and open fields. The risk of predation was apparently higher in the fields where birds scanned more frequently than in the cattlesheds and where scanning was negatively influenced by flock size but positively influenced by distance from cover. Individual time budgets were more influenced by flock size than by seed density in the fields but more influenced by seed density than by flock size in the cattlesheds. Higher rates of scanning resulted in greater flock vigilance and longer flight distances in the fields but flight distance was negatively influenced by the density of seeds on which birds were feeding.  相似文献

The foraging activity of bumblebees in a subalpine/alpine area in northern Sweden was related to weather factors (temperature, light, wind and rain) by counting the number of specimens visiting a square (5 × 5 m) with a high density of forage plants. The combined effect of light and temperature was the most important factor regulating the flight activity. The condition of the arctic light-climate allows bumblebees to fly even at the less light hours of the day. No clear differences according to flight activity were observed between the subalpine/alpine species Bombus balteatus Dahlbom, B. lapponicus (Fabricius) and the species B. jonellus (Kirby), B. pascuorum (Scopoli), B. pratorum (L.), observed in the subalpine habitats. A comparison between the flight activity of queens, workers and males shows that queens are able to fly at the lowest temperatures followed by males and workers at slightly higher temperatures. The relevance of the overlap of the body sizes between the casts is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Indicators of diversity (population density, relative number of species, percentage of singletons, evenness) of ground beetles (Carabidae) and rove beetles (Staphylinidae) in rain-fed rice fields were assessed between 1995 and 1999 at Garoua in the Benue valley in North Cameroon. A total of 4369 individuals belonging to 44 species of carabids and 2109 staphylinids in 27 species were caught by means of pitfall traps. Among the carabids, five species: Menigius lucidus var. strigiceps Qued., Chlaeniostenus denticulatus elatus Erichson, Lissauchenius venator (Laferté), Pheropsophus marginatus Dej. and Abacetus crenulatus Dej. in decreasing order, were dominant. In the staphylinid group, the species Paederus sabaeus Erichson was the most common, followed by Stenus ravus Puthz and Stenus (mendicus) senegalensis Bernhauer. Shannon-Weiner and evenness indices varied marginally from year to year. Diversity values remained relatively low ( < 2.8) among each group of beetles, which indicated that paddy fields were moderately populated by this group of polyphagous predators. Features of predacious soil surface-dwelling beetles in West African rice ecosystems are discussed in the light of Integrated Pest Management concepts.  相似文献

The distribution of the carabid beetle Nebria brevicollis was monitored in the summer during a period of declining activity associated with aestivation in a hedgerow. After emergence from aestivation, population density, distribution and dispersal of N. brevicollis were studied during autumn 1994 in a mark‐recapture experiment. 3560 beetles were marked and 1887 were recaptured in a grid of pitfall traps spanning a hedgerow and extending approximately 32 m either side into two recently harvested cereal fields. Population size, estimated from a Lincoln index, increased slightly with time with a mean population density of approximately 0.9 beetles m?2. Activity‐density varied during the experiment and was significantly related to maximum temperature. The population was aggregated within the hedgerow during aestivation and in several spatially stable hot‐spots of activity‐density within the field during autumn. There was considerable movement within fields but the hedgerow was a significant barrier to dispersal between fields, with potential effects on the metapopulation structure of the species.  相似文献

We conducted our study in Ili depression, south-eastern Kazakhstan during 1981–1989 to investigate how group sizes and group class frequencies change with increasing population densities in goitered gazelles. In addition, we compared our study to data on group size and group class frequency of various goitered gazelle populations in Kazakhstan with very variable population densities. We found that mean group size was a more variable index than group class frequency. Population density had some effect on mean group sizes, but the strength of the influence was quite weak, and only in cases where densities of two populations varied more than sevenfold did group sizes start to change. Group class frequency was not correlated with population density at all. The impact of the yearly breeding cycle on group size was bigger than population density. The density-dependent response of goitered gazelle population was curvilinear in fashion, and it may be classified as intermediate between social-dwelling ungulate species, living in large groups and demonstrating continuous (linear) increases of group size with population density and those that are solitary or territorial ungulate species with no relationship between population size and group size, though the goitered gazelle population’s weak response was distinctively closer to the one of solitary ungulate species.  相似文献

Higher flight activity has been observed in aged, high-density cultures ofProstephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), but adults in new, lowdensity culture jars showed less flight activity. In order to understand this change in behavior, the effects of population density, age, resource quality, and sex on the flight ofP. truncatus were studied in a wind tunnel. While an immediate density on the release platform had no significant effect on flight, beetles from high-density cultures were more inclined to fly than those from low-density cultures. Resource quality exerted a major influence on flight; insects in food suitable for boring and oviposition seldomly exhibited flight, however, when food was absent or of inferior quality for boring and oviposition, the dominant behavior was flight. Also, insects maintained for a week in food suitable for boring and oviposition were less ready to fly than those maintained in food unsuitable for boring and oviposition. The optimum age range for flight activity was before the peak of reproduction and insects rarely flew before 4 days or after 32 days of emergence. There were no significant differences between the flight activity of males and that of females. Based on these results, we conclude that age and resource quality are major influences on the flight activity ofP. truncatus and a hypothesis is proposed in which reproductively active male and female beetles disperse from habitats of low resource quality to those that support their reproductive behavior. The practical implications of these results and the possible role of the male-produced aggregation pheromone are discussed.  相似文献

Population fluctuations and synchrony influence population persistence; species with larger fluctuations and more synchronised population fluctuations face higher extinction risks. Here, we analyse the effect of diet specialisation, mobility, length of the flight period, and distance to the northern edge of the species’ distribution in relation to between-year population fluctuations and synchrony of butterfly species. All butterfly species associated with grasslands were surveyed over five successive years at 19 grassland sites in a forest-dominated landscape (50 km2) in southern Sweden. At both the local and regional level, we found larger population fluctuations in species with longer flight periods. Population fluctuations were more synchronous among localities in diet specialists. Species with a long flight period might move more to track nectar resources compared to species with shorter flight period, and if nectar sources vary widely between years and localities it may explain that population fluctuations increase with increasing flight length. Diet generalists can use different resources (in this case host plants) at different localities and this can explain the lower synchrony in population fluctuations among generalist species. Higher degree of synchrony is one possible explanation for the higher extinction risks that have been observed for more specialised species. Therefore, diet specialists are more often threatened and require more conservation efforts than generalists.  相似文献

The aim of the present research work was to investigate the population density and species composition of thrips infesting crops of onion in South Poland. The flight activity of thrips was monitored using blue sticky traps and plant samples were taken to record the number of adult and Larvae of thrips on onion. In 2004 the thrips were caught into blue sticky traps from the start of June to the end of the first decade of September. The peak flight activity was noticed in the middle of July. In 2004 the significant growth of the numerousness of adult thrips on onion grown from seeds was recorded in the middle and in the third decade of August, whereas on onion grown from sets in the first decade of August. Thrips larvae were not observed during the whole vegetation season. In 2005, the thrips were caught into blue sticky traps form the half of June to the first decade of September. The peak flight activity was noticed in the first decade of August. In 2005 the rapid growth of the numerousness of adult thrips on onion grown from seeds was recorded in the third decade of July. The highest number of adult thrips on onion grown from sets was noticed at the beginning of August. Thrips larvae were observed on onion grown from seeds in the third decade of July and at the end of the second decade of August. In both years of observations the most numerous species was Frankliniella intonsa Tryb. The second most numerous species was Thrips tabaci Lindeman. In 2004, the most numerous species was predacious Aeolothrips intermedius Bagnall.  相似文献

In South Africa, modified Bt (Cry1 Ac) cotton cultivars and organic ones coexist. This raises the question of the risk of dissemination of genetically modified (GM) pollen to non-GM crops by visiting insects. We inventoried the flower-visiting insects in Bt and non-Bt cotton fields of the South African Highveld region and investigated their role in pollen dispersal. Their diversity and abundance varied slightly among sites, with Astylus atromaculatus as the predominant insect on both Bt and non-Bt cotton flowers. The other major flower-visiting species were Apis mellifera and solitary Apidae. No differences were found in the abundance of each taxum between Bt and non-Bt cotton except for Scoliidae and Nitidulidae, which were scarce overall (<0.5%) but more abundant on the non-Bt flowers in the central area of the field at one site. The pollen load on A. atromaculatus was as high as on Apis mellifera. Cage tests showed that A. atromaculatus can pollinate female cotton plants by transferring pollen from male donor plants. In the field, the flight range of this insect was generally short (25 m), but it can occasionally reach up to 200 m or even more. This study therefore highlights that A. atromaculatus, commonly regarded as a pest, could be an unexpected but efficient pollinator. Because its population density can be high, this species could mediate unwanted cotton pollen flow when distances between coexiting fields are not sufficient.  相似文献

The construction of a storm-surge barrier in the mouth of the Oosterschelde caused important hydrodynamical and morphological changes that could influence the macrobenthic populations. This paper is one in a series of five all dealing with the effects of the storm-surge barrier on macrozoobenthos and analyses the spatial and temporal distribution of macrozoobenthos in the Oosterschelde and its relationship with some environmental parameters, based on two large scale sampling campaigns, one before and one after the completion of the barrier. The sediment of the sampling stations was fine, well sorted sand, with an average mud content of about 2.5 %. Only in the Krabbenkreek the sediment was coarser in 1989. The tidal elevation of the sampling sites decreased significantly in 1989.The density of macrozoobenthos was significantly lower, the biomass higher in 1989. The density was dominated by deposit feeders, the biomass by filter feeders. The difference in biomass between both years was mainly due to a substantial increase of the biomass of filter feeders in 1989. The number of species per station was significantly smaller in 1989 than in 1985. Between 1985 and 1989, frequency of occurrence decreased in 34 versus 13 which increased, density increased in 13 species and decreased in 34 species, biomass increased in 18 species and decreased in 29 species.Based on TWINSPAN several clusters of stations, each with a different faunal composition, were identified. These clusters did not form distinct zones on the tidal flats but were dispersed widely. The relationship between density and biomass of different trophic groups and the mud content of the sediment and the depth was analysed. This relationship sometimes differed clearly between years. The correlation coefficient of a multiple regression between density and biomass of individual species and environmental factors, although significant in most cases, was very low, indicating that only a small proportion of the species variability was explained. The relationship between benthos and environmental factors was further analysed by canonical correlation analysis and multivariate discriminant analysis that gave different results for the 1985 and 1989 data. This is probably due to the broad tolerance of the species to the range of the environmental variables found in our study area. From a TWINSPAN of the density data of 1985 and 1989 together we could conclude that, although the environmental parameters in a group of stations, showing a large faunal similarity in one year, did not change, the faunal composition did. This indicates that faunal changes are not necessarily linked to changes in the measured environmental parameters. In the discussion the different factors affecting macrobenthic populations are situated and it is suggested that the macrobenthic populations are probably more towards the nonequilibrium end of the continuum between nonequilibrium and equilibrium communities as defined by Wiens (1984).Although the impact of the construction of the barrier on the macrobenthic community seems at present to be rather small this does not mean that on the long-term there will be no effect.  相似文献

Improved understanding of coccinellid activity and predation on aphids in the field could clarify their potential in aphid biological control. Our objective was to determine the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on activity and predation by adults of three coccinellid species (Hippodamia convergens Guerin-Meneville, H. tredecimpunctata tibialis (Say), and Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer) in spring cereal fields. The proportion of time coccinellids spent searching was correlated with air temperature, aphid density, and time of day. The relationship between searching and these variables differed among species. Mean walking speed ranged from 66.4 cm/min for C. maculata to 83.2 cm/min for H. tredecimpunctata and increased with temperature for all species. The frequency of short flights (<2 m) by beetles increased with temperature and decreased with increasing aphid density for all species, but the relationship of short flight frequency to these variables differed among species. The frequency of long flights (>2 m) was similar for all species and influenced by temperature and calendar date. The frequencies with which aphids were encountered and eaten were correlated with aphid density and temperature for H. convergens and H. tredecimpunctata. Despite over 250 h spent observing adult coccinellid behavior in the field, predation data were insufficient to develop a useful predation model.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of predators and their prey is affected by their joint use of space. While the formation of such spatial patterns may be driven by density‐dependent and ‐independent factors our knowledge on the contribution of different land‐use activities on the formation of spatial patterns between predators and prey remains very limited. Agriculture is one of the most prevailing land‐use activities with strong effects on invertebrate densities and structural habitat conditions. Here, we used replicated conventionally and organically managed winter wheat fields to investigate the effects of agricultural land‐use on the spatial patterns of generalist predators and decomposer prey. We then identified the explanatory power of density‐dependent (prey and predator activity density) and density‐independent (vegetation structure) predictors for the observed spatial patterns. Generalist predators were regularly distributed only in conventionally managed fields and this pattern intensified with decreasing Collembola prey availability and increasing spider activity density. Segregation between carabid and spider predators was strongest in fields with lowest wheat plant height, suggesting more intense intraguild interactions in structurally less complex habitats. Collembola were aggregated independent of management and aggregation was strongest in fields with highest Collembola and carabid activity density. Spiders and Collembola prey were associated, but higher aphid densities under conventional management weakened or interrupted this spatial relationship. We conclude that active control of crop plant physiognomy by growth hormones and herbicides in conventionally managed fields promotes predator–predator segregation and that a high availability of aphid prey seems to decouple predator–Collembola prey associations. Our results emphasise the need for a more mechanistic understanding of the effects of land‐use on the formation of spatial patterns and species interactions, especially under scenarios of environmental change and an ongoing loss of biodiversity.  相似文献

Flight activities of three Spodoptera species were measured by the aid of flight actograph: S. litura and S. exuiga being regarded as long‐distance migratory insects, and S. depravata being non‐migratory and diapause‐inducible species. In all species tested, flight activities were observed only in scotophase, males showed far higher activities than females, being several times higher at the time of maximum flight activity, which was observed within 2 days after adult eclosion. Total flight activity in males was highest in S. litura, some being flyable even 12 days after eclosion, followed by S. exigua being one‐third compared to the former species, while in S. depravata flight activity was nearly half of that of the second species and most ceased to fly within a week after eclosion. There occurred species‐specific daily rhythms in flight activity during respective scotophase. In S. litura, both females and males exhibited a peak of flight activity shortly after light‐off and exhibited the second flight activity in late scotophase, the females slightly but the males more actively compared to early scotophase. In S. exigua, both sexes did not respond to light‐off, did not show a peak of flight activity in early scotophase, whereas males, but not females prominently increased activity toward the end of scotophase. In S. depravata, both sexes exhibited a peak of flight activity in early scotophase, and the males revived flight activity, being maximum shortly before light‐on, but the females did not show a clear rhythm in flight activity. These features observed in flight activity were discussed in relation with migratory capability.  相似文献

Lipophorin (Lp), either labeled in diacylglycerol moiety with [(3)H]-Palmitic acid or in phospholipid moiety with (32)Pi, was injected into Rhodnius prolixus females. Insects were induced to flight for different times. In just a few minutes of flight, the transfer of radioactivity to ovaries decreased, accompanied by its increase to flight muscles. After one hour of flight, Lp density was higher (1.132 g/mL) than before flight (1.116 g/mL). Lp purified from insects after flight was analyzed by gel filtration chromatography and a polyacrylamide gel pore limit electrophoresis. Both analyses demonstrated a decrease in Lp molecular mass after flight but no changes in apoLp-III amounts were observed. Time-course experiments showed that only 30 min of flight are required for the detection of changes in Lp density and molecular mass. About the same time of rest is necessary for Lp density and molecular mass to return to the baseline value. The lipid content from Lp particles, determined by high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC), showed a decrease in total lipids after flight. At the same time, an increase of many classes of lipids was observed in flight muscles except for triacylglycerol, which was reduced. The increase of flight muscle lipids was accompanied by a decrease of the ovaries lipid content. The insects subjected to daily exhaustive flight showed a significant decrease in total number of eggs produced. But insects subjected to a single exhaustive flight showed only a small reduction in total number of eggs. Lp density variation during the flight activity of Rhodnius prolixus females is discussed in association with physiological events such as oogenesis.  相似文献

A study of the mating behaviour of males of the beewolf Philanthus zebratus revealed that in one population males display variability in mating tactics and that this variability is related to male body size. There was a tendency for large males to patrol the airspace above the nesting area while smaller males were territorial adjacent to it. The mean sizes of the two groups of males were significantly different, although the size ranges of the two groups overlapped. Only 2.5% of the males were observed to undertake both mating tactics, at different times. Observations are presented on daily and seasonal activity patterns and on the relative location of nests, territories, and patrolling males. A second population, with lower nest density, was observed for several days, revealing only territorial males. It is suggested that the presence of patrolling males is related to the higher nest density of the one population. The fact that patrolling males tend to be relatively large is possibly related to flight energetics or simply to the ability of large males to seize females, which are usually larger than males, in mid-air.  相似文献
