The abundance, growth, and grazing loss rates of picophytoplankton were investigated in August 2002 in Barguzin Bay, Lake Baikal. Water samples for incubation were taken once at a near-shore station and twice at an offshore station. Contributions of picophytoplankton to total phytoplankton were high (56.9–83.9%) at the offshore station and low (5.8–6.8%) at the near-shore station. The picophytoplankton community in the offshore station comprised mainly phycoerythrin (PE)-rich cyanobacteria, with eukaryotic picophytoplankton being less abundant. In contrast, as well as PE-rich cyanobacteria and eukaryotic picophytoplankton, phycocyanin (PC)-rich cyanobacteria were found in the near-shore station. At the offshore station, growth and grazing loss rates on 25 August were 0.56 and 0.43 day−1, respectively, and on 29 August, 0.69 and 0.83 day−1, respectively. At the near-shore station, growth and grazing loss rates were 1.61 and 0.70 day−1, respectively. These results show that there is a difference in the abundance, composition, and ecological role in the microbial food web of picophytoplankton between the near-shore and the offshore areas in Barguzin Bay.  相似文献

The ciliate taxa from epilimnion, hypolimnion, and littoral of Lake Kinneret were studied from November to December 1987 during stratification. Two collections of planktonic and benthic ciliates were taken at each of six sampling stations. Benthic ciliates from the littoral zone were collected at seven stations along the lake shore. Densities were determined for each ciliate species and for total protozoans at each station and sampling date. Thirty-six species of ciliates, representing 31 Genera, 18 Orders and 7 Classes, were identified. Planktonic protozoans characteristic of the epilimnion included Coleps hirtus and Vorticella mayeri. The more abundant taxa of benthic ciliates in the profundal of the lake included Saprodinium dentatum, Plagiopyla nasuta and Dexiotricha plagia. The predominant ciliate in the littoral was Pleuronema coronatum. Principal component analysis, performed on the correlation matrix of both sampling stations and species, revealed that epilimnion, hypolimnion, and littoral belt were colonized by different ciliate communities.  相似文献

The exploitation of a deep algal maximum by Daphnia in the absence of fish predation was studied in large indoor mesocosms. Facing the dilemma of low food but high temperature in the epilimnion vs. high food but low temperature in the hypolimnion, Daphnia distribute above and below the thermocline in order to optimise their fitness. Labelling hypolimnetic algae with 15N revealed that the vertical distribution of Daphnia is dynamic, i.e., all individuals traverse the thermocline and allocate a certain proportion of their time to feeding in the cold water. The overall energy gain from the deep-water algal maximum is lower than from the same algal concentration in the epilimnion due to the low temperature and the limited time an individual spends in the hypolimnion. The results provide mechanistic support for the hypothesis that Daphnia chose their habitat according to an Ideal Free Distribution with Costs model.  相似文献

The abundance and composition of phytoplankton were investigated at six stations along a transect from the Barguzin River inflow to the central basin of Lake Baikal in August 2002 to clarify the effect of the river inflow on the phytoplankton community in the lake. The water temperature in the epilimnion was high near the shore at Station 1 (17.3°C), probably due to the higher temperature of the river water, and gradually decreased offshore at Station 6 (14.5°C). Thermal stratification developed at Stations 2–6, and a thermocline was observed at a 17–22-m depth at Stations 2–4 and an 8–12-m depth at Stations 5 and 6. The concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients in the epilimnion at all stations were <1.0 μmol N l−1 and <0.16 μmol P l−1, respectively. Relatively high concentrations of nutrients (0.56–7.38 μmol N l−1 and 0.03–0.28 μmol P l−1) were detected in the deeper parts of the euphotic zone. Silicate was not exhausted at all stations (>20 μmol Si l−1). The chlorophyll a (chl. a) concentration was high (>10 μg l−1) near the shore at Station 1 and low (<3 μg l−1) at five other stations. The <2 μm fraction of chl. a in Stations 2–6 ranged between 0.80 and 1.85 μg l−1, and its contribution to total chl. a was high (>60%). In this fraction, picocyanobacteria were abundant at all stations and ranged between 5 × 104 and 5 × 105 cells ml−1. In contrast, chl. a in the >2 μm fraction varied significantly (0.14–11.17 μg l−1), and the highest value was observed at Station 1. In this fraction, the dominant phytoplankton was Aulacoseira and centric diatoms at Station 1 and Cryptomonas, Ankistrodesmus, Asterionella, and Nitzschia at Stations 2–6. The present study demonstrated the dominance of picophytoplankton in the pelagic zone, while higher abundance of phytoplankton dominated by diatoms was observed in the shallower littoral zone. These larger phytoplankters in the littoral zone probably depend on nutrients from the Barguzin River.  相似文献

Seasonal population dynamics and the vertical distribution of planktonic ciliates in a hypertrophic and strongly stratified temperate lake were studied from April to October in 2000 and from April to June in 2001. In the epi- and metalimnion the ciliate abundance peaked in spring and late summer, reaching maximum values in the metalimnion (86 cells ml−1) on 7th August 2000. In the epilimnion, the highest biomass content (414 μg C l−1) was observed on 8th May 2000. In the hypolimnion only a late summer peak occurred and the ciliate numbers were always lower than in the epi- and metalimnion. Five groups dominated the community of ciliates: Oligotrichida, Gymnostomatea, Prostomatida, Hymenostomata and Peritrichia, and the community composition varied greatly with depth. In the epilimnion the ciliate numbers were dominated by oligotrichs but small algivorous prostomatids, peritrichs and gymnostomes were also numerous. In the metalimnion these groups were gradually replaced by scuticociliates and mixotrophic Coleps spp. In the hypolimnion scuticociliates and species known as benthic migrants dominated. In the epilimnion and upper metalimnion in spring large herbivores and in summer small bacterivores were more numerous.  相似文献

Digestion in the carnivorous form (giant) of the filter feeding ciliateOxytricha bifaria and in the obligatory carnivorous, raptorial feeding ciliateLitonotus lamella were studied and compared at the ultrastructural level. It was found that whenO. bifaria, shifts from the normal, bacterivorous to the gigantic carnivorous form, it modifies its morphology, acquiring new and more effective feeding devices but maintaining unaltered the digestion pattern and mode of food absorption. This takes place through pinocytotic activity at the food vacuolar membrane. The digestive process inLitonotus is far more rapid: within 10 min the vacuolar membrane disappears; in this way the cytoplasm of the prey, not yet completely digested, is mixed with that of the predator and a pinocytotic mechanism does not seem to he necessary for nutrient assimilation. In general, results demonstrate that filter feeders and raptorial ciliates differ not only in their food intake mechanism, but also in the pattern and the timing of their digestive process, even when they ingest similar kinds of food.  相似文献

1. The ciliate Euplotes octocarinatus responds to the presence of Stylonychia mytilus with a morphological transformation rendering its ingestion more difficult. Predation on Euplotes is reduced when an alternative prey, the flagellate Chlorogonium elongatum, is available. Lower predation is accompanied by reduced induction in Euplotes. 2. We quantified the motility of both ciliates in the presence and absence of Chlorogonium to test the hypothesis that the differential response in Euplotes is a consequence of behavioural changes affecting the encounter rate of the prey and the predator. 3. The results indicate that S. mytilus uses different feeding strategies for each prey. It is a filter feeder when small food particles (Chlorogonium) are abundant, however, it becomes a raptorial feeder when large prey with an escape capability (Euplotes) is available and small alternative prey are absent. 4. As the mobility of filter feeding Stylonychia is strongly limited, the presence of the flagellate may indirectly affect the defence level in Euplotes by reducing the frequency of contacts with the predator. 5. An experiment with Chaetogaster diastrophus, a more specialised predator not affected by the presence of Chlorogonium, as well as direct manipulation of the encounter rate by changing the surface area available for the crawling ciliates, supported the encounter rate hypothesis.  相似文献

Distribution of dissolved organic carbon in Lake Baikal and its watershed   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
 Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in Lake Baikal ranged from 90 to 110 μM C, considerably higher than those in oceanic environments. The DOC concentrations in the epilimnion were higher than those in the hypolimnion. Since particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations in the pelagic waters of Lake Baikal were <10–40 μM C in the epilimnion and 2–5 μM C in the hypolimnion, DOC constitutes a major component of the organic carbon pool in Lake Baikal, especially in the deep layers. The DOC concentrations downstream of the Barguzin and Selenga Rivers were quite high (400–500 μM C). Probably because of the high concentrations of DOC in these rivers, the DOC levels in Barguzin Bay and offshore at the mouth of the Selenga River were higher than those in the pelagic regions of the central and south basins of Lake Baikal. The relationship between DOC and electric conductivity revealed the transport of DOC from rivers to the pelagic area in Lake Baikal. The spatial distribution of DOC suggested that a major part of DOC in the lake was allochthonous (land-derived). The contribution of ciliates as a food source to survival of first-feeding surgeonfish larvae, Paracanthurus hepatus, was examined in rearing experiments. The larvae were exposed to eight treatments; i.e. a tintinnid, Amphorellopsis acuta (1.0 × 104, 5.1 × 103 and 2.2 × 103 cells l–1) and a naked ciliate, Euplotes sp. (1.3 × 104, 8.0 × 103 and 5.0 × 103 cells l–1), plus two controls without ciliates. Highest survival of the larvae over the first 4–8 days was observed in the highest density of A. acuta. Rearing experiments also showed that the survivals of larvae fed with A. acuta were higher than those fed with Euplotes sp. Gut content analyses revealed loricae of A. acuta in the larvae. Although Euplotes sp. (lacking loricae) was never recognized in those larval guts, feeding on Euplotes sp. by larvae was confirmed using the ciliate labeled with fluorescent microspheres, implying that the feeding on naked ciliates by fish larvae has been overlooked. The results strongly suggested that both tintinnid and naked ciliates play important roles as alternative food sources to copepod nauplii by enhancing the survivability of fish larvae, especially those with a smaller mouth.  相似文献

1. Protozoans are important consumers within microbial food webs and, in turn, they represent potential prey for small metazoans. However, feeding interactions within these food webs are rarely characterised and this is especially true for freshwater sediments. 2. We aimed to quantify the feeding links between a freshwater meiofaunal copepod and ciliates in two laboratory experiments. The first experiment addressed the response of Eucyclops serrulatus towards ciliate density and type (two ciliate species of the same genus differing in terms of body size). A second experiment assessed the effect of habitat structure on feeding rates by introducing different structural complexity into the feeding arena. In contrast to the first experiment, which was run only for one time period, this experiment also tested three different total feeding times (4, 7 and 9 h). 3. Eucyclops serrulatus exhibited high ingestion rates, with 3–69 ciliates copepod?1 h?1 consumed depending on food concentration, food type and habitat complexity. Copepods exhibited a preference for the smaller ciliate when total ciliate concentration was low, but selected both ciliates equally when food concentrations were medium or high. However, at very high food concentration, Eucyclops preferred the larger ciliate (which was 1/3 of its own body size), suggesting that the longer handling times of the larger prey are rewarding when the large prey is present in high numbers. In terms of total numbers consumed, copepods fed on more small ciliates, but in terms of carbon units both ciliates were selected equally when total prey concentration was low or medium. However, copepods derived more carbon from the larger prey at high and very high prey concentrations (up to 0.7 μgC out of a maximum of 1.1 μgC copepod?1 h?1). Habitat complexity influenced the feeding of copepods when it was observed over time. 4. The copepod–ciliate link is well known from the pelagic zone of both marine and freshwater habitats. We have shown its potential importance within the benthos, where it can be influenced by food identity, food quantity and possibly by habitat complexity.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of planktonic ciliates in eight strongly stratified temperate lakes was studied in summer 1998. Ciliate abundance and biomass were highest (mean 39.9 cells ml–1 and 181.9 g C l–1) in the epi-, and lowest (mean 8.2 cells ml–1 and 97.6 g C l–1) in the hypolimnion. The community of ciliates was dominated by five orders: Oligotrichida, Haptorida, Prostomatida, Scuticociliatida and Peritrichida. The community composition varied greatly with depth. In the epilimnion, the ciliate numbers were dominated by oligotrichs but small algivorous prostomatids, peritrichs and haptorids were also numerous. In the metalimnion, these groups were replaced by scuticociliates and mixotrophic prostomatids. In the hypolimnion species known as benthic migrants appeared. We found a positive significant correlation (p < 0.05) between ciliate numbers and Chl a and bacterial densities. Only in the hypolimnion, the correlation between ciliates numbers and Chl a was not significant.  相似文献

  1. Many aquatic organisms can consume parasite larvae, thus hampering parasite transmission; however, information about feeding on them in the presence of an alternative prey remains scarce. When having a food choice, predators may decrease parasite consumption, therefore, it is important to assess the role of parasites in the diet of predators in natural communities with different types of prey available. Our study aims to test whether common freshwater cyclopoids feed on trematode free-living stages (cercariae) when an alternative food source is present.
  2. We experimentally studied ingestion rates of cyclopoids Macrocyclops distinctus fed with cercariae of trematode Diplostomum pseudospathaceum, a common and harmful parasite of freshwater fishes, and ciliates Paramecium caudatum (an alternative prey, known as suitable food for copepods). First, the feeding response of cyclopoids to different densities of each prey was studied. Then, feeding selectivity in the mixtures of cercariae and ciliates was tested.
  3. Feeding rates of cyclopoids increased with prey densities (both ciliates and cercariae) but almost stopped growing at high prey densities, which indicated saturation (Holling type II functional response). In most cases, cyclopoids consumed cercariae at higher rates than ciliates. Maximum ingestion rates estimated from the obtained curves were 37 cercariae ind−1 hr−1 and 17 ciliate ind−1 hr−1.
  4. When exposed to prey mixtures, cyclopoids fed on cercariae selectively. When cercariae were offered to cyclopoids at concentrations exceeding the saturation level, the ingestion of ciliates remained constantly low at all ciliate densities. In contrast, the ingestion of cercariae increased with rising cercariae densities even when ciliates were presented ad libitum, decreasing only at very high prey densities. Possible reasons of such feeding preferences are discussed.
  5. Our study demonstrated that cyclopoids may prefer to feed on cercariae when there is an alternative food choice and can ingest cercariae at high rates. These experimental results could be extended to natural communities, suggesting that cyclopoids can reduce the transmission of parasites and contribute to the incorporation of parasite production in food webs of lentic ecosystems.

Vertical distribution of phytoplankton and the formation of deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) in the metalimnion of a small stratified and partly meromictic temperate lake was studied in 1999 and 2000. During summer DCM usually occurred on the borderline of H2S and oxygen-containing waters. At the depths where the bacteriochlorophyll (Bchl) maxima were observed, the sulphide concentration was usually relatively low compared to the bottom layers, where its concentration reached as high as possible saturation level. In April 2000, DCM was formed at the depth of 3.5 m, and lowered thereafter slowly to 6.5 m by October. The concentration of Bchl d reached the highest values (over 1000 μg l−1) just before the water column was mixed up in autumn. In December and April Bchl d was detectable only near the bottom of the lake. The concentration of chlorophyll a yielded by the spectrophotometric phaeopigment corrected method and by HPLC (high pressure liquid chromatography), fit rather well in the upper layers. In deeper water layers chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) measured by spectrophotometry was overestimated about 47 times if compared to HPLC values because of the high Bchl d in that layer. In most cases vertical profiles of primary production (PP) did not coincide with the vertical distribution of the pigment content; the maximum values of PP were found in the epilimnion. In some cases PP had notably high values also at the depth of DCM. In the upper layers Chl a usually did not exceeded 20 μg l−1 in spring and 10 μg l−1 in summer. The moderately high Chl a in the epilimnion in spring was significantly reduced after the formation of thermocline most probably because of the establishment of the nutrient limitation in epilimnion. Decreasing Chl a concentration in the epilimnion led to increased water transparency and better light conditions for photosynthetic bacteria in metalimnion.  相似文献

Research on aquatic ecosystems has shown the presence of diel (24 hour) variations of chlorophylla. In order to investigate this phenomenon in the Great Lakes, an IFYGL program was set up in which 8 cruises were made roughly monthly between April and October 1972. Two Lake Ontario Stations were chosen, one inshore near Oshawa, Ontario and the other mid-lake. Chlorophylla samples were taken approximately every two hours at depths of 1, 5 and 1o m at the inshore station and 1, 10 and 20 m at the mid-lake station.Chlorophylla concentrations at the 1 m depth were reduced during periods of high light intensities, but this phenomenon was observed only during the late June and July cruises at the near-shore station. Apparently, during most cruises, light intensities were too low to produce this effect. Coefficients of variation of chlorophylla concentrations as great as too% occurred at the deeper sampling depth during periods when the thermocline was well developed. This variability was associated with a thermocline motion in which the fixed depths sampled moved from the epilimnion into the thermocline or the hypolimnion and back again over the sampling period. When the lake was not thermally stratified, variability of chlorophylla concentrations was also observed with coefficients of variations between 20–3o%. Horizontal advection by currents, vertical turbulence, and presence of Langmuir cells were possible mechanisms causing such chlorophylla variability.In light of these observations, caution must be used in interpreting spatial and temporal distributions of chlorophylla in lakes. Special care must be taken when sampling at depths near the thermocline due to movements that take place. For this reason, water samples taken from the epilimnion during periods of thermal stratification are recommended as opposed to fixed depth or integrated samples which could be affected by thermocline movements.This study was undertaken as part of the International Field Year for the Great Lakes, a joint Canadian-U.S. contribution to the International Hydrological Decade Program  相似文献

  • 1 The physical limnology of Augher Lough, Northern Ireland (area=9.25 ha. z=5.5 m), including stratification pattern, heat budget, thermocline erosion rate, eddy diffusion rate in the thermocline and hypolimnion and areal hypolimnetic oxygen deficit is described.
  • 2 Oxygen and temperature profiles, recorded at two sites during 1978 and four sites during 1979, showed that spatial variability of these quantities was low and allowed the following lake characteristics to be estimated. Heat budgel was 5.30 kcal cm-2 (standard deviation=s=0.26) in 1978 and 5.00 (s= 0.26) in 1979. The thermocline depth was 3.5–6.5 m with an erosion rate of 1.9X10-7 m s-1 in 1979. Eddy diffusion coefficients of heat in the thermocline and hypolimnion normally ranged from 0.48X 10-2 cm2 s-1 (s=0.20X10-2) to 5.4X10-2 (s=2.6X10-2), but reached 10X10-2 cm2s-l (s=9X10-2) in early July 1978 after a cooling-mixing episode in the epilimnion. The hypolimnetic oxygen deficit was 680 mg O2 m-2 d-1 (s=76) and varied strongly with depth.
  • 3 A cooling-mixing episode in the epilimnion in June-July 1978 caused the movement of heat down to 8 m, movement of oxygen down to 6 m and increased the eddy diffusion coefficients of heat by an order of magnitude.

We investigated attachment processes of hydrophobic and hydrophilic particles (diameter = 1 μm) to mature biofilms grown on clay marbles in a sequencing batch biofilm reactor. During a treatment cycle with filtered wastewater containing different fluorescent beads, the progression of particle density in various biofilm compartments (carrier biofilm, basic biofilm layer, biofilm flocs, and sessile ciliates) was determined by flow cytometry, confocal laser scanning microscopy and automated image analysis. Particles were almost completely removed from wastewater by typical processes of particle retention: up to 58% of particles attached to clay marbles, up to 15% were associated with suspended flocs, and up to 10% were ingested by sessile ciliates. Ingestion of particles by ciliates was exceptionally high immediately after wastewater addition (1,200 particles grazer−1 h−1) and continued until approximately 14% of the water had been cleared by ciliate filter feeding. Most probably, ciliate bioturbation increases particle sorption to the basic biofilm. Backwashing of the reactor detached pieces of biofilm and thus released approximately 50% of the particles into rinsing water. Clay marbles in the upper part of the reactor were more efficiently abraded than in the lower part. No indications for selective attachment of the applied hydrophobic and hydrophilic beads were found. As a consequence of interception patterns, organisms at elevated biofilm structures are probably major profiteers of wastewater particles; among them, ciliates may be of major importance because of their highly active digestive food vacuoles.  相似文献

  • 1 The susceptibility of ciliates in a mesotrophic lake to predation by Epischura lacustris, Diaptomus minutus and D. pygmaeus was assessed during summer. Oligotrichs, particularly Strobilidium velox (c. 43 μm), were removed efficiently by adult copepods and contributed substantially to the diet of female D. minutus. The presence of approximately 1,6 adult Epischura 1-?1, or sixteen adult female Diaptomus 1-?1, could halt the growth of S. vechx populations in summer.
  • 2 Factors affecting the rate at which copepods prey on ciliates were examined in experiments with D. pygmaeus and cultured ciliates. Rate of predation on S. velox, the preferred species, became saturated at 5 S. velox ml?1 (45ngCml?1) and did not change with a 10-fold increase in alternative algal food.
  • 3 Behavioural differences among ciliates, and the presence of other ciliates, contributed to differences in ciliate susceptibility to predation and suggest reasons why rates of removal of ciliates are not related to ciliate size.
  • 4 By feeding selectively, at high rates, calanoids may suppress populations of some ciliates and thereby influence microzooplankton community structure.

On three research cruises in 1981, zooplankton community filtration rates were measured at 4 stations: Saginaw Bay, mid-Lake Huron, Georgian Bay and North Channel. For all four stations, the highest rates were observed during the late-September cruise. The maximum observed rate was 137 000 ml d–1 m–3, while the lowest rate was 7200 ml d–1 m–3. The grazing experiments were performed on three size classes of radioactively labelled algal food (0.45–5 µm, 5–20 µm and 20–64 µm). In 11 of 12 experiments, the smallest size class of food yielded the highest filtration rate. For the late-May cruise we used published data on phytoplankton biomass for the Georgian Bay and North Channel stations to calculate community feeding rates of 0.09 and 0.015 mg C mg C m–3 d–1, respectively, and percent cropping rates of 0.74 and 0.35 per day, respectively. A comparison of our feeding rates to literature values for zooplankton biomass suggests that algal food alone may not be sufficient to sustain zooplankton growth at those stations.  相似文献

Participation of nitrilotriacetic acid degrading bacterial strain NTA-1 in the continuous-cultivated mixed culture was studied under different conditions including predation pressure of the ciliate Dexiostoma campyla (STOKES , 1886). From the viewpoint of dispersed/flocculated biomass distribution, significant relationships between NTA-1 and total bacteria ratio, and dispersed and total biomass ratio were proved in the systems without high concentrations of ciliates. The ciliate concentrations reaching 104 ml−1 stabilized flocculated biomass growth without directly affecting NTA-1 portion. Using fluorescently labelled NTA-1 bacteria, filter feeding rates of ciliates were evaluated (maximum individual uptake rate upon NTA-1 bacteria as a number of bacteria per ciliate per hour being 120 h−1 and 260 h−1 under ciliate division rate of 0.3 day−1 and 1 day−1, respectively). Biomass balance showed that dispersed NTA-1 bacteria should not serve as the sole feeding source for these free-swimming ciliates. The role of diversity of mixed bacterial diet in ciliate growth and the role of ciliate predation in stabilizing bacterial assemblage structure was proved.  相似文献
