The identity and synonymy of Acacia guilandinae,Mimosa obovata,M. pseudo-obovata,and M. laticifera (Mimosaceae)

Acacia guilandinae DC. is recognized asMimosa guilandinae (DC.) Barneby, endemic to French Guiana and adjoining Amapá, Brazil;M. pseudo-obovata is subordinated as a Brazilian var.pseudo-obovata (Taub.) Barneby to CaribbeanM. ceratonia L.; andM. laticifera is found synonymous withM. obovata Benth. Diagnostic morphological characters of each taxon are presented in key form.     

Increments to the genus Mimosa (Mimosaceae) from South America

Four new species are described and discussed: from BoliviaM. (sect.Habbasia ser.Setosae)huanchacae; from SE brazilM. (sect.Habbasia ser.Pachycarpae)chiliomera andM. (sect.Mimosa)murex; and from EcuadorM. (sect.Mimosa subser.Polycarpae)Loxensis. The two Brazilian species are illustrated.     

Comparison of a common and rare species of Mimosa (Mimosaceae) in Central Brazil

Abstract The aim of this study was to verify differences in the biology of a common widespread species (Mimosa claussenii Benth.) and three rare endemics (Mimosa decorticans Barneby, M. heringeri Barneby, and M. setosissima Taub.). We studied three populations of M. claussenii and one population of each rare species at four localities in central Brazil. We compared the population structure, phenology, fruit set, seed predation, germination, establishment and root/shoot ratio in these six populations. The endemic species occurred in higher densities and smaller individuals were more abundant. When in sympatry, the rare and common species showed a significant negative correlation of density. Mimosa claussenii occurred in drier and rocky environments, whereas M. decorticans and M. setosissima occurred in moister habitats. Rare species had higher levels of fruit set, more viable seeds per individual, and heavier seeds. Mimosa setosissima had the highest level of germination and establishment rate, but did not survive away from its endemism centre. The common species had a higher root/shoot ratio. Overall, the biological aspects studied indicated an advantage in reproductive biology for the rare in relation to the common species. The small geographical range of the rare species may be related to edaphic isolation and climatic changes in the Quaternary.     

Reevaluation of Mimosa biuncifera and M. texana (Leguminosae: Mimosoideae)

Mimosa biuncifera, as currently defined in southwestern United States, is shown to comprise two related species,M. biuncifera s. str. andM. texana, distinguished primarily by position of the nodal aculei. Taxonomic synonyms ofM. biuncifera areM. lindheimeri andM. warnockii (the first undisputed, the second provisional);M. texana includesM. wherryana.     

Influence of the Parasite Pilostyles ingae (Rafflesiaceae) on some Physiological Parameters of the Host Plant,Mimosa naguirei (Mimosaceae)*

plants found at this site were densely covered by flowers of the parasite on their stems indicating heavy development of cellular The holoparasite/host interaction of Pilostyles ingae (Karst.) Hook. f. (Rafflesiaceae) and Mimosa naguirei Barneby (Mimosaceae) was studied in the open campo rupestre vegetation of Serra do Cipó (State of Minas Gerais, Brazil). Infected M. naguirei threads of the parasite in the bark of the hosts. Cellular threads of the parasite are likely to be richer in lipids and hence depleted in ¹³C. This may explain the significantly more negative carbon isotope ratios (δ¹³C values) of the bark of infected host plants observed as compared to other tissues of infected and non-infected host plants. Photosynthetic parameters such as potential quantum yield of photosystem II (F_v/F_m), apparent photosynthetic electron transport rates (ETR) and effective quantum yield of photosystem II (A F/F'_m) in light dependence curves, as well as δ¹³C values of leaves as a relative measure of average intercellular CO₂ partial pressure during photosynthesis over the lifetime of the leaves, which is also related to average stomatal conductance via water use efficiency, were remarkably similar. This suggests a well balanced relation between the Mimosa host and the Pilostyles parasite, in contrast to other hemiparasitic angiosperm parasite/host interactions where the parasite (e.g. Striga) is known to have strong detrimental effects on host photosynthesis.     

A new species of Mimosa sect. Mimosa (Leguminosae, Mimosoideae) from Southern Brazil

A new species of Mimosa section Mimosa, Mimosa eurystegia, which is apparently endemic to Paraná in southern Brazil, is described and illustrated. This species is distinguished by plurinerved leaflets and papyraceous, plurinerved, orbicular, amplexicaul stipules. Morphological distinctiveness of this new Mimosa and its relationships with allied species are discussed. Phenological, geographical and ecological data are presented, in addition to a key to the species of Mimosa subser. Sparsae.     

A note on replication in (M,R)-systems

The condition which allows the existence of induced replication maps in (M,R)-systems is shown to place strong restrictions on the “richness” of the category from which these systems can be constructed. This condition also admits of a simple biological interpretation, which can be checked empirically, and which may offer insight into the physical and biological realizations of these abstract systems.     

Photosynthesis in Flaveria brownii A.M. Powell : A C(4)-Like C(3)-C(4) Intermediate

Leaves of Flaveria brownii exhibited slightly higher amounts of oxygen inhibition of photosynthesis than the C₄ species, Flaveria trinervia, but considerably less than the C₃ species, Flaveria cronquistii. The photosynthetic responses to intercellular CO₂, light and leaf temperature were much more C₄-like than C₃-like, although 21% oxygen inhibited the photosynthetic rate, depending on conditions, up to 17% of the photosynthesis rate observed in 2% O₂. The quantum yield for CO₂ uptake in F. brownii was slightly higher than that for the C₄ species F. trinervia in 2% O₂, but not significantly different in 21% O₂. The quantum yield was inhibited 10% in the presence of 21% O₂ in F. brownii, yet no significant inhibition was observed in F. trinervia. An inhibition of 27% was observed for the quantum yield of F. cronquistii in the presence of 21% O₂. The photosynthetic response to very low intercellular CO₂ partial pressures exhibited a unique pattern in F. brownii, with a break in the linear slope observed at intercellular CO₂ partial pressure values between 15 and 20 μbar when analyzed in 21% O₂. No significant break was observed when analyzed in 2% O₂. When taken collectively, the gas-exchange results reported here are consistent with previous biochemical studies that report incomplete intercellular compartmentation of the C₃ and C₄ enzymes in this species, and suggest that F. brownii is an advanced, C₄-like C₃-C₄ intermediate.     

Anthecology ofSchrankia nuttallii (Mimosaceae) on the tallgrass prairie

Schrankia nuttalii flowers through late spring on the tallgrass prairie. Although each stem produces an average of 26 capitate inflorescences only 12% of those inflorescences will open each day to disperse and receive polyads. Each inflorescence may live up to 48 hours but anthers abscise by late afternoon on the first day and the filaments change color and lose their scent. The 78–93 florets comprising each inflorescence open synchronously before dawn or during early morning hours. First day inflorescences ofS. nuttallii are herkogamous and fragrant. They are nectarless. Bombyliid flies and male bees are infrequent floral foragers so the major pollinators include female bees representing five families;Anthophoridae, Apidae, Colletidae, Halictidae, andMegachilidae. All foraging insects ignore second day inflorescences although stigmas are still receptive. Although 97% of all bees collected onS. nuttallii carrySchrankia polyads in their scopae or corbiculae 59% also carry the pollen/pollinaria of one or more coblooming angiosperms. At least 98% of all bees carrying mixed pollen loads incorporate the pollen/pollinaria of one or more nectariferous taxa (e.g.Asclepias spp.,Asteraceae, Convolvulaceae, Delphinium spec., etc.). Species of halictid bees are more likely to carry pure loads ofS. nuttallii polyads (70%) than bees of the four remaining families. Due to the nectarless florets and high degree of polylectic foraging bee-pollination inS. nuttallii converges more closely with the pollination systems of some AustralianAcacia spp. than with most other xeric/tropical genera of mimosoids studied in the western hemisphere.
