Otoliths ( n = 847) and gonads ( n = 817) were collected from barrelfish Hyperoglyphe perciformis that were captured by commercial fishermen in the waters off South Carolina and Georgia in 1995, 1997 and 2001–2006. Of the otoliths collected, 97% were aged successfully, and specimens sampled ranged from 5 to 85 years, with a median age of 12 years. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters yielded the equation: Lt = 857·8{1 − e−0·0985[ t −(−8·95)]}, where Lt is fork length ( L F) at time t . Through histological examination, 94% of the gonads assessed were assigned to a sex and reproductive class. Females spawned from September to May with a peak from November to January. Males spawned year round, but had a peak from September to April. The sex ratio (M:F) for this population was 1:1·34. The smallest mature female was 605 mm L F and the youngest immature female was 697 mm L F. Estimates of L F and age at 50% maturity ( L 50 and A 50) for females were 660 mm L F (95% CI = 633–667 mm L F) and 6·08 years (95% CI = 3·50–7·27 years), respectively. The youngest mature male was 575 mm L F and the oldest immature male was 762 mm L F, and no estimates of L 50 or A 50 were made for males. It was determined that barrelfish exhibit the typical characteristics of long life span, slow growth and high age at maturity seen in other deepwater fishes, and that care should be taken to manage this species accordingly.  相似文献

The fork length ( L F) of individual chub Leuciscus cephalus in English riverine populations at the end of their first growth season varied considerably, ranging from <25 to >70 mm. This had a significant influence on the subsequent growth of individuals over their lifetime. Chub of small L F at age 1 year generally produced smaller annual growth increments throughout life than those of longer L F at age 1 year, although they had the potential to attain greater ultimate L F. This variability in L F at age 1 year resulted, at least in part, from multiple spawning events over a protracted period, that caused variation in the growing seasons for 0 year group chub of the same year class. Since the adult population contained individuals that only attained L F of <25 mm at the end of their first growing season, it is possible that L F at age 1 year may not be such a major precursor to strong chub recruitment as previously thought.  相似文献

For wild red snapper Lutjanus campechanus , mean otolith increment deposition rate after marking with oxytetracycline dihydrate (OTC) was daily (0.97 increments day−1) when growth rates were fast (0.63 mm fork length, L F day−1), but were not daily (0.82 increments day−1) when somatic growth was slow (0.2 mm L F day−1). For reared larvae ( n =8), increment deposition rates were daily (0.99–1.03 increments day−1), and growth rates ranged from 0.6 to 0.9 mm L F day−1. Growth rate affected increment deposition rate as a threshold function, i.e. when growth rate was <0.3 mm L F day−1, deposition was less than daily, but above this level increment deposition did not exceed a daily rate. As growth rates increased increment widths increased. Examination of a sub-sample ( n =8) of the otoliths from the slowest growing wild fish by scanning electron microscopy did not increase increment counts. Because L. campechanus are late spring-early summer spawners, young fish can expect maximum growth due to warm summer temperatures. Thus, daily ageing methods should be well suited to this species.  相似文献

Following the accidental introduction of the carp Cyprinus carpio into Lake Naivasha during 1999, a sustainable population became rapidly established and in early 2004 became the principal species exploited in the commercial fishery. Over 9000 kg of carp were harvested from the lake between October 2005 and 2006, when fish were captured between fork lengths ( L F) 200 and 800 mm (>8 kg). Diet of carp <100 mm L F was dominated by zooplankton, >100 mm L F there was a shift to benthic macro-invertebrates, with these carp feeding principally upon food resources previously unexploited by the fish community. Contrary to predictions and despite the increasing carp abundance, there has been macrophyte regeneration in littoral areas since 2004. There have been substantial increases in areal cover, with coverage in 2006 at levels not observed since the late 1980s, and significant increases in species richness. Possible reasons for this, and the significance of this carp introduction, are discussed.  相似文献

This study demonstrated that the transition from a steady to an unsteady locomotory gait ( U STmax) in juvenile brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis can be measured easily using a new tilting raceway design and a simple experimental protocol. It was found that U STmax increased linearly with fork length ( L F), and that this relationship was statistically identical in fish that swam volitionally in the raceway and those that were forced to perform, although slightly different data processing methods were needed in the latter to achieve this result. Furthermore, the relationship between L F and U STmax was statistically identical to that between L F and critical swimming speed ( U crit), although L F in the former relationship explained 83% of the variance compared to 37% in the latter. This finding indicates that gait transition speed can be used to estimate maximum aerobic capacity, with less unexplainable variance than U crit. Gait transition speeds were also determined from U crit tests; however, this required measuring and incorporating ground speed into the analysis. U STmax as determined in the U crit tests was not significantly different from that measured in the raceway, suggesting that gait transition speed can be measured in raceways or swim tunnel respirometers.  相似文献

Golden galaxias Galaxias auratus (31–235 mm fork length, L F) were collected monthly from littoral habitats in Lakes Crescent and Sorell, Tasmania, Australia, between July 2000 and December 2002. Spawning habitats were identified and monitored in both lakes, and surveyed in Lake Crescent. Trends in gonado-somatic indices and reproductive stages of development indicated that gonad development in both sexes begins in midsummer and peaks in late autumn to early winter. Males mature at smaller sizes (50% at 52 mm L F) than females (50% at 76 mm L F), larger individuals are predominately females (95% of fish ≥138 mm L F), and overall male to female ratios are female biased ( c . 1:2). Spawning occurs late autumn to early spring (water temperatures = 1·4–9·7° C) with peaks in spawning activity in winter (mean water temperatures <5° C). Demersal adhesive eggs ( c. 1·5 mm diameter) were found on cobble substrata ( c. 20–250 mm diameter) in littoral areas ( c. 0·2–0·6 m deep) and fecundity of fish 71–181 mm L F ranged from 619 to 14 478 eggs. The rate of change in water level over the 20 days prior to monthly sampling was important in explaining the occurrence of spent fish and this accounted for temporal differences in spawning between the populations. Lake hydrology influences the reproductive cycle of G. auratus by possibly providing a stimulus for spawning and it controls the availability of spawning habitat in Lake Crescent. Seasonal hydrological cycles ( i.e. rises during late autumn to winter) and a minimum water level of 802·20 m Australian Height Datum in Lake Crescent during autumn (above which littoral areas of cobble substratum are inundated) are critical to G. auratus populations.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of blacknose sharks Carcharhinus acronotus in the western North Atlantic Ocean was studied by examining specimens collected in the coastal waters of South Carolina. Males begin the maturation process between 875 and 910 mm fork length ( L F), as indicated by the presence of functional claspers and siphon sacs. The presence of vitellogenic oocytes and developing oviducal glands and uteri indicated that females begin to mature at c . 870 mm L F. Length at which 50% of the population reached maturity was 896 and 964 mm L F, equivalent to 4·3 and 4·5 years, for males and females, respectively. Gonado‐somatic indices suggested that spermatogenesis and vitellogenesis began after December. Mating took place during the end of May and the beginning of June. Fertilization occurred during late June and early July, suggesting that female blacknose sharks were capable of sperm storage. Based on the timing of fertilization and occurrence of females carrying near‐term pups in late May and early June, the gestation period for blacknose sharks was c . 11 months. Female blacknose sharks reproduced biennially based on the absence of vitellogenic oocytes in near‐term females and there being no indication of vitellogenesis in postpartum females. Male blacknose sharks were capable of reproducing annually as indicated by turgid genital ducts, which were observed in all mature males collected during late May and early June.  相似文献

Major temporal changes in the importance of euphausiids and Atlantic herring Clupea harengus in the diet of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua , 10–75 cm L F, occurred in shallow waters (<100 m depths) of the southern Gulf of St Lawrence between 1959 and 2000. Euphausiids represented 6–70% of prey mass for Atlantic cod 31–60 cm L F from 1959 to 1987 but only trace amounts were detected in stomachs collected from 1990 to 2000. Mysids and gammarid amphipods (for Atlantic cod ≤45 cm L F), and Atlantic herring (for Atlantic cod >45 cm L F) largely replaced euphausiids in the Atlantic cod diets from 1990 to 2000. This diet change suggested there has been a major perturbation of the food web of the southern Gulf of St Lawrence. The importance of fishes (mostly Atlantic herring) in the diet of Atlantic cod >45 cm L F increased significantly between the periods 1959–1980 and 1987–2000. Atlantic herring comprised 0–4% (mean 1.3%) of prey mass of Atlantic cod 46–60 cm L F from 1959 to 1980 and increased to 2–42% (mean 19.6%) of the diet from 1987 to 2000. Atlantic herring comprised 0–25% (mean 9.4%) of the prey mass of Atlantic cod 61–75 cm L F from 1959 to 1980 and increased to 42–81% (mean 54.2%) of prey mass from 1987 to 2000. This increased consumption of Atlantic herring was consistent with observed changes in abundance of Atlantic herring in the ecosystem between the late 1970s and 2000. The large changes in consumption of euphausiids and Atlantic herring represent highly significant changes and would need to be included in the development and interpretation of ecosystem-based management models for this ecosystem.  相似文献

Feeding rate experiments were conducted for pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha fry [mean fork length ( L F) 39 mm], juveniles (103–104 mm L F) and juvenile chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta (106–107 mm L F). Fishes were presented with small copepod ( Tisbi sp.) or larger mysid shrimp ( Mysidopsis bahia ) prey at varying densities ranging from 1 to 235 prey l−1 in feeding rate experiments conducted at water temperatures ranging from 10·5 to 12·0° C under high light levels and low turbidity conditions. Juvenile pink and chum salmon demonstrated a type II functional response to mysid and copepod prey. Mysid prey was readily selected by both species whereas the smaller bodied copepod prey was not. When offered copepods, pink salmon fry fed at a higher maximum consumption rate (2·5 copepods min−1) than larger juvenile pink salmon (0·4 copepods min−1), whereas larger juvenile chum salmon exhibited the highest feeding rate (3·8 copepods min−1). When feeding on mysids, the maximum feeding rate for larger juvenile pink (12·3 mysids min−1) and chum (11·5 mysids min−1) salmon were similar in magnitude, and higher than feeding rates on copepods. Functional response models parameterized for specific sizes of juvenile salmon and zooplankton prey provide an important tool for linking feeding rates to ambient foraging conditions in marine environments, and can enable mechanistic predictions for how feeding and growth should respond to spatial-temporal variability in biological and physical conditions during early marine life stages.  相似文献

Preservation of walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma, capelin Mallotus villosus and eulachon Thaleichthys pacificus by freezing decreased fork length ( L F) up to 1·8, 5·6 and 2·7% and reduced mass by up to 8·4, 3·5 and 1·1%, respectively. Shrinkage of walleye pollock standard length ( L S) was greater for fish in 95% ethanol v . 5% formalin and for fish in 10% formalin v . frozen. Equations describing the shrinkage and loss in mass for these species are presented as well as conversions between different length measurements ( L S, L F and total length, L T) for fishes that were frozen.  相似文献

Ovarian differentiation of fathead minnow Pimephales promelas occurred at between 10 and 25 days post‐hatch (dph)(8–11 mm fork length, L F, and 7–12 mg), and was characterized by the presence of meiotic cells in the centre of the gonad, location of the somatic cells at the periphery of the gonad and the formation of an ovarian cavity. In contrast with the developing ovary, in the presumptive testis somatic cells were scattered throughout the gonads and this was evident from 25 dph (fish >10 mm and >11 mg). In males, at 60 dph (15–26 mm and 39–220 mg) the efferent ducts (sperm ducts) were apparent and the testis lobules started to form, but germ cells (spermatogonia) did not enter meiosis until between 90 and 120 dph. Fish of both sexes reached full sexual maturity at between 120 and 150 dph (males: 33–59 mm and 400–2895 mg; females: 24–48 mm and 160–1464 mg). Differences in body size ( L F and mass) between males and females were only apparent when the fish were approaching full sexual maturity (120 dph).  相似文献

The growth rates of naturally sympatric juvenile pink Oncorhynchus gorbuscha and sockeye Oncorhynchus nerka salmon were compared in a common lacustrine environment in south‐west Alsaka, an unusual opportunity given the normal disparity in freshwater residence time of these two species. Fork length ( L F) frequency distributions of juvenile pink salmon caught in the lake during the summer in 1991 and 1999–2003 indicated a growth rate of 0·54 mm day−1, 54% greater than the estimated growth rate of juvenile sockeye salmon sampled from 1958 to 2003 (0·35 mm day−1). Examination of daily growth rings on otoliths indicated that pink salmon in Lake Aleknagik grew an average of 1·34 mm day−1 in 2003 but sockeye salmon grew only 0·63 mm day−1(average specific growth rates were 3·0 and 1·8% day−1, respectively). Pink salmon increased from c . 32 mm L F and 0·2 g at emergence to 78 mm L F and 3·0 g within 3–4 weeks. After experiencing these rapid growth rates, the pink salmon appeared to leave the lake by late July in most years. The diets of pink and sockeye salmon in the littoral zone of the lake were very similar; >80% of the stomach contents consisted of adult and pupal insects and the remainder was zooplankton. This high degree of diet overlap suggested that the observed differences in growth rate were not attributable to variation in prey composition.  相似文献

Variation in fecundity was examined from 32 populations of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus in eastern North America covering a range of 37° latitude and extending from Maine, U.S.A., to northern Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic. Populations were classed as dwarf, normal or anadromous and covered a suite of different habitat and climatic regimes. Fecundity varied with fork length ( L F), with L F adjusted fecundity differing significantly among populations within each of the morphotypes implying that fecundity was a continuously responsive trait influenced by local environmental factors. Latitudinal variation in fecundity was also evident among morphotypes when the simultaneous effects of both latitude and L F were controlled. There was a significant trade‐off between fecundity and egg size in two of five populations of anadromous Arctic charr, but no evidence in limited data from either normal or dwarf populations. In contrast with some other studies of fecundity in salmonids, there was no evidence for a latitudinal cline in egg size.  相似文献

Reproductive biology of gag in the southern Gulf of Mexico   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Aspects of the reproductive biology of gag Mycteroperca microlepis in the southern Gulf of Mexico were studied by following seasonal variations in the gonado‐somatic index and through histological examination of gonads. Gag were collected from inshore and offshore waters of the Campeche Bank, Yucatan, Mexico, between April 1996 and December 2001. This species is a protogynous hermaphrodite, and appeared to be depth‐size distributed. The smallest gag (9–49 cm L F) collected were all juvenile females, and were caught in inshore waters (1–10 m depth), while the largest (49–116 cm L F), mainly adult females, males and transitionals, were captured in offshore waters (33–167 m depth). Overall the offshore male to female ratio was female‐biased (1 : 3·3) and differed significantly from unity. The species spawns at depths of c . 50–53 m, from early winter to mid‐spring, with peak spawning activity occurring between January and March. Fifty per cent of females reached first maturity at 72·1 cm L F. At 103 cm L F, 50% of sampled females had changed into males. Gag can be considered a monandric species, and sexual transition for this grouper seemed to occur in fish distributed within a narrow size range (85–111 cm L F). The results are compared with those of other authors for gag stocks from the south‐east Atlantic coast of the U.S.A. and the north‐east Gulf of Mexico.  相似文献

The first evidence for female‐biased migration in a partially migratory stream‐dwelling salmonid the Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma , a phenomenon well known in sea‐run and lake‐run populations, is presented. Dolly Varden in the Shiisorapuchi River in central Hokkaido, Japan, used both tributaries, of which there are many, and the main stem, but spawned only in tributaries. The size structures of Dolly Varden (≥age 1 + years) in tributaries were unimodal (<100 mm fork length, L F) during non‐spawning seasons but changed to bimodal during spawning seasons (lower mode <110 mm, upper mode >120 mm L F). Mature individuals were observed in both modal groups. From the trapping and census data, the small group appeared to be tributary resident and the large group main stem migrant. Males were common in both resident and migrant components. Most females, however, migrated to the main stem to mature, indicating female‐biased migration.  相似文献

The most critical period at onset of feeding in pikeperch Stizostedion lucioperca is short (<5 days at 20° C). The larvae are sensitive to prey density during the first week of exogenous feeding. First-feeding larvae of 6.5 mm total length ( LT ) needed prey densities of >585 prey l−1 to maintain mass (Cmaint), whereas 5 days older larvae of 7 mm L T Cmaint= 55 prey l−1 and for 11 mm L T larvae Cmaint<10 prey 1−1. Changes in specific growth rates for larvae of 7 and 11 mm were similar to a type-II functional response curve reaching a specific growth rate of 26 and 30% day−1, respectively, at 1000 prey l−1, whereas the 6·5 mm larvae showed a linear growth response reaching a specific growth rate of only 9% day −1 at 1000 prey l−1. The results suggest that prey density is a limiting factor, which might contribute to the high variation between year-class Strengths.  相似文献

A rapid, accurate and non‐invasive method to determine the sex of larval sea lampreys Petromyzon marinus , using wide‐field pulse‐scanning acoustic microscopy, is described. Cross‐sectional pulse‐echo scans were made with a high‐resolution acoustic microscope in 48 larvae (110–130 mm total length, L T), and the acoustic images generated showed such internal body structures as the gonad, intestine, kidneys, cardinal veins, notochord and musculature. Females were identified by the presence of a relatively large (1–1·5 mm diameter) ovary, which was considerably less reflective to the 15 to 25 MHz acoustic signals than the surrounding kidney tissue. Males were recognized by the lack of the large non‐reflective ovary and, in some cases, the appearance of a small (0·2–0·3 mm) testis with slightly stronger reflective properties than the kidney. Identification of sex was confirmed by optical microscopy following dissection, and in a blind test on an additional 10 specimens (121–168 mm L T), the acoustic method reliably identified sex in 100% of the larvae. These results indicate that acoustic microscopy can determine the sex of live sea lamprey larvae in c . 30 s per animal, a process which until now required dissection or invasive surgery.  相似文献

The marine feeding pattern of anadromous brown trout (sea trout) Salmo trutta and Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus was studied during June to August in 1992–1993 and 2000–2004 in a fjord in northern Norway. In general sea trout fed proportionally more on fishes than on crustaceans and insects (81, 1 and 18% by mass, respectively) by comparison with Arctic charr (52, 25 and 22% by mass, respectively). Herring Clupea harengus dominated the total fish diet of both species, but the Arctic charr also fed significantly on gadoids and sandlance Ammodytes spp. While sea trout became virtually all piscivorous at fork lengths ( L F) ≥250 mm, the Arctic charr was ≥400 mm L F before shifting totally to a fish diet. Despite annual variation in diet and forage ratios, there was a clear shift in diet from 1992–1993 to 2000–2004. Sandlance and different crustaceans constituted most of the diet during the initial period with a shift towards gadoids and especially herring during the latter period. This shift seemed to be associated with a high abundance of herring larvae during the latter sampling period, indicating a preferential selection on herring when present, particularly by sea trout. Furthermore, an index indicated dietary overlap in years with intensive feeding on herring of both species, and usually differences in the trophic ecology during years feeding mostly on other prey species. In combination, it was hypothesized that the two species reflect the type of marine prey present within a fjord system over time, and therefore provide an index of variation in the production and biological diversity of their potential prey within fjords.  相似文献

Isotopic labelling experiments were conducted to assess relationships among 13C of recently assimilated carbon ( δC A), foliage respiration ( δC F), soluble carbohydrate ( δC SC), leaf waxes ( δC LW) and bulk organic matter ( δC OM). Slash pine, sweetgum and maize were grown under 13C depleted CO2 to label biomass and then placed under ambient conditions to monitor the loss of label. In pine and sweetgum, δC F of labelled plants (∼−44 and −35‰, respectively) rapidly approached control values but remained depleted by ∼4–6‰ after 3–4 months. For these tree species, no or minimal label was lost from δC SC, δC LW and δC OM during the observation periods. δC F and δC SC of labelled maize plants rapidly changed and were indistinguishable from controls after 1 month, while δC LW and δC OM more slowly approached control values and remained depleted by 2–6‰. Changes in δC F in slash pine and sweetgum fit a two-pool exponential model, with the fast turnover metabolic pool (∼3–4 d half-life) constituting only 1–2% of the total. In maize, change in δC F fits a single pool model with a half-life of 6.4 d. The 13C of foliage respiration and biochemical pools reflect temporally integrated values of δC A, with change in isotopic composition dampened by the size of metabolic carbon reserves and turnover rates.  相似文献

Ontogenetic changes in temperature preference of Atlantic cod   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Final thermal preferendum ( T ) experiments were conducted in a horizontal thermal gradient tank from the beginning of August 2001 to mid‐November 2001 using Atlantic cod Gadus morhua from 6·5 to 79·0 cm fork length ( L F). The value of T varied significantly ( P  < 0·005) with L F( T  = 7·23–0·054 L F), with smaller (younger) fish choosing higher temperatures than larger (older) fish. The preferendum varied from 6·9° C for fish of 6·5 cm to 3·0° C for those of 79·0 cm. Experiments comparing fish positions in the gradient tank between thermal gradients of 0·5–11·0 and 4·5–14·5° C demonstrated that fish positions were determined by temperature selection instead of undesirable tank effects. This study is the first to demonstrate the effect of ontogeny on temperature preferences of a marine fish species.  相似文献
