Abstract: The tree cactus Opuntia quimilo is one of three known gynodioecious cacti. Its flowers deviate from most Opuntias in features that are attributable to ornithophily: petals are shiny red in colour, and fleshy in consistency, a nectar chamber is present, and stamen seismonasty is lacking. Pollinators include large matinal bees (predominantly Ptilothrix tricolor and Megachile sp.) and hummingbirds ( Chlorostilbon aureoventris and Heliomaster furcifer ). Hummingbirds rarely visit other local Opuntias. Hummingbirds, which are more common in the afternoon, prefer female flowers whereas bees prefer hermaphroditic flowers. Female flowers have more dilute nectar than hermaphroditic flowers. Under experimental conditions female fertility is as high as that of hermaphrodites, however, seeds from females always result from cross-pollination and from more severe ovule selection (ovule number is higher in female flowers). Under natural conditions female plants are reproductively more successful than hermaphrodites. Known cases of bird pollination in Opuntia and the incidence of ornithophilic features in Opuntia and related genera are discussed. 相似文献

Dispersal can affect the assembly of local communities in a metacommunity as well as evolution of local populations in a metapopulation. These two processes may also affect each other in ways that have not yet been well studied and that may have novel effects on community structure. Here, we illustrate the interaction of these two processes on community structure with a model of adaptive evolutionary dynamics of plant defenses in a metacommunity food web involving multiple patches along a productivity gradient. We find an enhanced suite of adaptive plant types in our metacommunity model than is predicted in the absence of dispersal. We also find that this, and the movement of nutrients among patches via dispersal, alters patterns of food web architecture, trophic structure and diversity along the productivity gradient. Overall, our model illustrates that evolutionary and metacommunity dynamics may influence communities in complex interactive ways that may not be predicted by models that ignore either of these types of processes. 相似文献

Climate-growth relationships are strong in seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs). To better understand the ecological processes controlling these relationships we need to assess the long-term responses of wood anatomy and radial growth to year-to-year climate variability. We assessed how wood-anatomical traits (mean vessel area –MVA– and vessel density –VD–, percentage of conductive area –CA–, xylem-specific estimated hydraulic conductivity –Ks–) and growth responded to local climate (mean temperature, total precipitation, estimated moisture) variability and teleconnections (Pacific Decadal Oscillation) between 1970 and 2011 in two Fabaceae tree species (Centrolobium microchaete and Cenostigma pluviosum) coexisting in a Bolivian SDTF. We found that C. microchaete produced wider vessels and was more responsive to both local climate conditions and teleconnections than C. pluviosum. In C. microchaete VD positively responded to average temperature in the late-wet season and in the previous dry season, and CA and Ks were higher in years with warmer wet and previous early-dry seasons, as well as in years with higher PDO values. These responses were independent from ring-width variability only for C. microchaete. For C. pluviosum, vessel chronologies were more responsive to local temperature variability, and only MVA and CA positively and negatively responded to moisture in the early-dry and the previous dry seasons, respectively. Our results show that wood hydraulic structure in SDTFs is responsive to climate fluctuations. The combined study of ring width and wood anatomy allows having a more complete picture of the influence of climate on growth, particularly in species as C. microchaete which show low collinearity of tree-ring width and wood plasticity in response to climate variability. 相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is considerable confusion in the literature concerning impermeability of seeds with 'hard' seed coats, because the ability to take up (imbibe) water has not been tested in most of them. Seeds of Opuntia tomentosa were reported recently to have a water-impermeable seed coat sensu lato (i.e. physical dormancy), in combination with physiological dormancy. However, physical dormancy is not known to occur in Cactaceae. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine if seeds of O. tomentosa are water-permeable or water-impermeable, i.e. if they have physical dormancy. METHODS: The micromorphology of the seed coat and associated structures were characterized by SEM and light microscopy. Permeability of the seed-covering layers was assessed by an increase in mass of seeds on a wet substrate and by dye-tracking and uptake of tritiated water by intact versus scarified seeds. KEY RESULTS: A germination valve and a water channel are formed in the hilum-micropyle region during dehydration and ageing in seeds of O. tomentosa. The funicular envelope undoubtedly plays a role in germination of Opuntia seeds via restriction of water uptake and mechanical resistance to expansion of the embryo. However, seeds do not exhibit any of three features characteristic of those with physical dormancy. Thus, they do not have a water-impermeable layer(s) of palisade cells (macrosclereids) or a water gap sensu stricto and they imbibe water without the seed coat being disrupted. CONCLUSIONS: Although dormancy in seeds of this species can be broken by scarification, they have physiological dormancy only. Further, based on information in the literature, it is concluded that it is unlikely that any species of Opuntia has physical dormancy. This is the first integrative study of the anatomy, dynamics of water uptake and dormancy in seeds of Cactaceae subfamily Opuntioideae. 相似文献

Plant reproductive output can be limited by a variety of factors, bothintrinsic and extrinsic. I investigated the reproductive biologies of twospecies of unbranched short-columnar cacti, Ferocactuscylindraceus and F. wislizeni. I recordedfemalereproductive output (flowers produced, fruit set, seeds per fruit and seedmass), plant size and growth, and used hand-pollination experiments todeterminebreeding systems and pollen limitation. In both species, the ability to selfvaried among individuals, but self-pollination resulted in very few seeds,suggesting strong inbreeding depression. Neither species was pollen-limited.Numbers of flowers produced increases with plant size for both species, andseeds per fruit may also be related to plant size, although the relationship isunclear. Seed mass is not correlated with plant size. Flower production wassimilar in both species, but F. cylindraceus producedfewerseeds per fruit than F. wislizeni, and its seeds weighedless. Fruit set by F. cylindraceus was heavily impacted bya florivorous lepidopteran. Fruit set was very high (94 to 96%) inF. wislizeni, suggesting that architectural constraints(e.g., meristem limitation) are more limiting than resource levels or the levelof pollinator services. In F. cylindraceus, numbers ofseeds per fruit was positively correlated with seed mass, whereas inF. wislizeni, the relationship was negative (tradeoff).Thegrowth rates of F. wislizeni are affected by rainfall theprevious season, and growth rates increase as the plant ages.Ferocactus cylindraceus and F.wislizeni are thought to be sister species, meaning that observeddifferences between them are more likely to be the result of recentevolutionaryprocesses in their lineages rather than differing phylogenetic histories. 相似文献

Emus provide an excellent opportunity for studying sustained high-speed running by a bird. Their pelvic limb musculature is described in detail and morphological features characteristic of a cursorial lifestyle are identified. Several anatomical features of the pelvic limb reflect the emus' ability for sustained running at high speeds: (1) emus have a reduced number of toes and associated muscles, (2) emus are unique among birds in having a M. gastrocnemius, the most powerful muscle in the shank, that has four muscle bellies, not the usual three, and (3) contribution to total body mass of the pelvic limb muscles of emus is similar to that of the flight muscles of flying birds, whereas the pelvic limb muscles of flying birds constitute a much smaller proportion of total body mass. Generally, the pelvic limb musculature of emus resembles that of other ratites with the notable exception of M. gastrocnemius. The presence and arrangement of four muscle bellies may increase the effectiveness of M. gastrocnemius and other muscles during cursorial locomotion by moving the limb in a cranio-caudal rather than a latero-medial plane. Synopsis The size of seven neural structures was compared in 51 species of Notropis, Pteronotropis, Cyprinella, Luxilus, Lythrurus, and Hybopsis, and related to the turbidity of the species& habitat. This last parameter was assessed for each species by personal communication with 42 ichthyologists. To control for size differences among species, all analyses were performed on the residuals from a regression of each character on standard length. Principal components analysis (PCA) of the residuals produced four significant PC-axes that together explained 65% of the total variation represented in the original variables. The size of brain structures concerned with vision, olfaction, and gustation was correlated with habitat turbidity. Two-way Analyses of Covariance (ANCOVAs) revealed significant differences between species in the size of all structures. Sexual dimorphism was found in the size of the olfactory bulb and the cerebellum, and significant two-way interactions (species vs. sex) were detected for the telencephalon, optic lobes, cerebellum, vagal lobe, and the eye. Cluster analysis indicated that neither similar turbidity preference nor shared phylogeny is alone sufficient to explain the observed differences in brain morphology. 相似文献

A new genus and species in the eucalypt group of the Myrtaceae is described. Stockwellia quadrifida D.J. Carr, S.G.M. Carr & B.Hyland gen. et sp. nov. is a rainforest tree of restricted distribution on the Atherton Tableland, North Queensland, Australia. Molecular data suggest that it is the sister taxon to Eucalyptopsis and this is supported by morphological characters. The prolonged hypanthium and reduced perianth appear to be synapomorphies for these two genera and the circumscissile hypanthium a synapomorphy shared with Allosyncarpia . Stockwellia differs from Eucalyptopsis by the distinct, albeit reduced, perianth and the hypanthium splitting into four segments at anthesis. PFA (Phalera flavescens agglutinin) lectin purified from larvae of the lobster moth (P. flavescens) shows a strong binding ability specific to the N-acetyllactosamine (Galβ1-4GlcNAc) site. We determined the genomic and cDNA sequences of the PFA gene, which consists of five exons and spans approximately 5 kb of a genomic region. Surprisingly, the amino acid sequence (149 amino acids) was similar to invertebrate-type lysozymes and related proteins. The predicted tertiary structure of the PFA protein was similar to the lysozymes of clams such as the common orient clam (Meretrix lusoria) and Japanese littleneck (Venerupis philippinarum (Tapes japonica)). The PFA, however, lacks a catalytically essential amino acid, an Asp (D), which is one of the two important amino acids (Glu (E) and D) express the function of lysozyme. As a result, lysozyme activity assays indicated that PFA does not have lysozyme activity. Results suggest that the PFA gene evolved from a lysozyme gene through the loss of lysozyme activity sites and the acquisition of lectin activity during evolution of the genus Phalera. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the actively wintering Palearctic sable Martes zibellina has evolved physiological adaptations to tolerate nutritional scarcity. Sixteen farm-bred male sables were divided into a fed control group and an experimental group fasted for 4 days. The rate of weight loss in the sable was similar to other medium-sized mustelids. Fasting led to hypoglycaemia and to a decreased lymphocyte percentage. The sable derived metabolic energy from both subcutaneous and intraabdominal white adipose tissues and the relative decrease in fat mass was the largest for the retroperitoneal and subcutaneous depots. Metabolic energy derived partly from body proteins indicated by the increased plasma levels of urea, uric acid and total essential amino acids. Triacylglycerols accumulated in the livers of the fasted sables and the increased plasma aminotransferase activities suggested hepatic dysfunction. The decreased plasma insulin concentrations and the elevated cortisol levels probably contributed to stimulated lipolysis and protein catabolism. Moreover, fasting increased the plasma ghrelin concentrations of the sables and down-regulated the thyroid activity. 相似文献

The developmental morphology of Terniopsis malayana, an unusual aquatic angiosperm from Thailand, was examined. A unique vegetative structure called the “ramulus” arises endogenously
in the root tissue. The ramulus has an actively growing apical meristem. The ramulus branches several times to form a “ramulus
complex” consisting of up to six ramuli, which are distichously arranged in almost a single plane. In a ramulus complex, the
new ramulus (ramulus branch) is initiated on the adaxial side of the first (the basalmost) scale in the first ramulus, but
at a site lateral to the first scale in later ramuli, suggesting that the new ramulus arises from axillary or extra-axillary
buds of the immediately older ramulus. Ramulus growth is terminated in association with the loss of the apical meristem, and
its axillary or extra-axillary buds begin to grow to form the next new ramulus instead. The flower occurs in place of the
youngest ramulus, when reproductive. It seems likely that the Terniopsis ramulus and its scale are comparable to the shoot and leaf, and thus a ramulus complex is interpreted as a sympodially branched

This investigation aimed to determine the morphological characteristics of the tongue, palate and laryngeal entrance of southern lapwing by gross anatomy and scanning electron microscopy. For this purpose, the organs of three birds were used as material. Numerous densely distributed acicular projections were found on the lingual apex. Papillary crest consisting of sharp conical papillae were observed between the body and root of the tongue. Conical papillae of the lateral border of the papillary crest were triangular in form, and other conical papillae of the papillary crest were shorter in form. There were no papillary projections or papillae on the smooth surfaces of the lingual body and radix. On the median part of the palate, larger conical papillae, which were directed caudally, also surrounded entrance of the choanal cleft. The transversal papillary rows of conical papillae were observed between the rostral and caudal parts of the choanal cleft and on the caudal border of the infundibular cleft. The laryngeal entrance was surrounded by smooth mucosa without conical papillae. However, in the caudal border of the glottic fissure, there was a conical papillary row formed by numerous conical papillae. There were no anatomical differences between female and male birds. 相似文献

Skeletal muscles in the whipspider Phrynus longipes are surveyed and compared with those of other chelicerates to clarify the evolutionary morphology and phylogenetic relationships of the arachnids. Representatives of 115 muscle groups are described and illustrated, and their possible functions are proposed. Principal results of this analysis include new functional models for the operation of the pharyngeal and sternocoxal mechanisms in Amblypygi and a greatly expanded list of apparently unique synapomorphies supporting the monophyly of Pedipalpi (= Amblypygi, Schizomida, Thelyphonida). 相似文献

Stem xylem features in two evergreen Quercus species (Q. coccifera and Q. ilex) and a deciduous one (Q. faginea) were analysed along an Atlantic-Mediterranean climatic gradient in which rainfall and winter cold experience strong variation.
Mean maximum vessel diameter, vessel density, vessel element length, xylem transverse sectional area, Huber value (xylem transverse
sectional area per leaf area unit), theoretical leaf specific conductivity (estimated hydraulic conductance per leaf area
unit) and total leaf area were determined in 3-year-old branches. Q. faginea presented the widest vessels and the highest theoretical leaf specific conductivity while Q. coccifera showed the lowest total leaf area and the highest Huber value. Studied features did not exhibit significant correlations
with mean minimum January temperature in any species but did show significant relationships with rainfall. In Q. coccifera, mean maximum vessel diameter, vessel element length and theoretical leaf specific conductivity increased with higher rainfall
while vessel density decreased. Mean maximum vessel diameter and total leaf area in Q. ilex increased with precipitation whereas variables of Q. faginea did not show any significant trend. Results suggest that aridity, rather than minimum winter temperature, controls stem xylem
responses in the studied evergreen species. Q. faginea traits did not show any response to precipitation, probably because this species develops deep roots, which in turn makes
edaphic and topographic factors more important in the control of soil water availability. In response to aridity Q. coccifera only exhibits adjustment at a xylem level by reducing its water transport capacity through a reduction of vessel diameter
without changing the amount of xylem tissue or foliage, whereas Q. ilex adjusts its water transport capacity in parallel to the foliage area.

Synopsis The parental behaviour of the Madagascan cichlid,Paratilapia polleni, was studied in the laboratory. According to current hypotheses of phylogenetic intrarelationship for the family Cichlidae,Paratilapia is a representative of a phylogenetically primitive cichlid lineage, and as such is of particular interest in comparative evolutionary studies. Given the basal phylogenetic placement ofParatilapia it seems reasonable to expect that, if maternal participation in brood care arose within the extant Cichlidae, then the proposed plesiomorphic system of extensive male care of eggs and embryos may be retained in this taxon. This is not the case, and already by the fertilized-egg interval male and female roles inParatilapia are strongly differentiated with the female as the primary care giver. In addition to specialized behavioural roles, a unique egg morphology and mobile egg mass is described forParatilapia. The results of the study are discussed in the context of theories of the evolution of maternal brood care within the Cichlidae. 相似文献

Endogenous variations in the annual growth of trees suggest that similar trends would occur in phyllodes. In comparison to
leaves, the characteristics of phyllodes are less well known, hence this study examines the effects of architectural position
and age of tree on the phyllodes of Acacia mangium. Phyllodes were investigated on 1-, 2-, and 3-year-old trees from three axis positions within the crown. We focused on the
morphological, optical and biochemical traits of the phyllodes. The increase in phyllode area and lamina thickness is more
pronounced in the older trees. Leaf mass area (LMA), stomatal density, nitrogen and chlorophyll content increase with tree
age. The values of these characteristics decrease from the main stem to the lower branches for the older trees. Phyllode light
absorptance increased with tree age whereas reflectance was higher for the upper position compared to the lower position within
the crown. Carotenoid content and chlorophyll a/b ratio were higher for the younger phyllodes of younger trees. Increasing tree size induced modifications in the phyllode
characteristics which are influenced by both morphogenetic and light gradients within the crown. This study demonstrated pronounced
changes in terms of morphological and functional indicators of photosynthetic capacity in relation to phyllode position within
the crown and to tree age. These morphogenetic effects on the phyllode characteristics should be taken into account in studies

The European Dendroecological Fieldweek (EDF) is a one-week course that takes place every year at varying locations in Europe according to the principle “Bring tree-ring research to the people”. The EDF welcomes early-career to advanced researchers, but also forest service and other federal agency employees and private people interested in tree-ring sciences from all over the world. It encompasses a large spectrum of dendrochronological field, laboratory and data analysis methods and scientific fields including climatology, ecology, physiology, geomorphology and archaeology. Multiple scales of observations from the individual cell to the ecosystem level and from seasonal to multi-centennial periods are covered. Work on mini research projects in topic groups alternates with keynote lectures and individual participants’ presentations.As one of the first in-person tree-ring meetings since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic the 31st EDF was held in summer 2021 in Val Müstair, Switzerland. Topics included i) Tree age and climate sensitivity of a relict, old-growth Scots pine stand, ii) Blue intensity-based climate sensitivity of Norway spruce growth, iii) Tree rings as indicators of grey larch budmoth outbreaks, iv) Growth of larch trees along an abandoned irrigation channel, v) Wood anatomical characteristics of two alpine creeping shrub species, and vi) Historical dating of a stable and a residential house. Alongside with their educational value these projects allowed novel insight into the age structure and growth dynamics of the sub-alpine forests and beyond in the valley and provided valuable outcome to the local stakeholders such as the Nature Park Biosfera Val Müstair, the local forest service and the public of Val Müstair.Under hindered conditions due to the pandemic, the 31st EDF still demonstrated its strength as an international educational and interdisciplinary scientific field and lab course, combining teaching with the application of cutting-edge technologies. 相似文献
