We examined the effects of several variables on the number of live births in multiparous females in a wild population of golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia). Independent variables included the number of infants born to a female the previous breeding season, the number of infants weaned the previous breeding season, the female's age and body mass, the number of adult males and helpers in the group, and the inbreeding coefficient of the offspring. We also tested the hypothesis that trapping and chemical immobilization during pregnancy affected the number of live births. Female body mass was the only statistically significant predictor of the number of live-born infants in the current season when both first and second peaks were included. Characteristics that predicted higher numbers of infants in the first peak of a season were the number of infants born the previous season and the body mass of the female. The greater the number of infants born the previous season, the greater the number of infants born in the first peak of the current season. Factors positively correlated with the number of live births in the second peak within a season included the number of infants born the previous season, as well as the number of available helpers. Due to sample size constraints, the analysis of litters in the second peak did not include body mass of the female as a variable. Inbreeding and handling did not affect the number of live births. We found no evidence that current reproduction negatively impacts future reproduction in this species. We also found no evidence for an age-related reduction in fertility.  相似文献

The breeding biology of the bank vole was studied in northern and southern populations in Sweden in the years 1973–76. Trapped specimens supplied organ weights and histological data, which were utilized to describe the breeding season, number and size of litters, reproductive losses, spermatogenesis, and sexual maturation. In the north the populations are cyclic. During the increase phase of the cycle the breeding season was long, litter sizes and gonad weights were large, and there was maturation of yearlings in the summer. During the peak phase reproduction was impaired in all these respects. In southern Sweden there was no cyclicity, and the reproductive events varied less, but in 1976 the litters were larger than usual and the season was much extended.
In the south the voles born during the early part of the season regularly became sexually mature during their first summer. The differences in reproductive biology are related to population dynamics and discussed in terms of different hypotheses concerning vole population cyclicity.  相似文献

The testes of the blue fox (Alopex lagopus) showed marked seasonal variations in size. Testicular weight and volume increased rapidly during January and February to reach maximal values by the beginning of the breeding season (approximately 15 March). During May and June the weights and volumes of the testes declined gradually to the quiescent state which lasted from July until October. Quantitation by DNA flow cytometry of the seasonal changes in the relative numbers of haploid (1C), diploid (2C) and tetraploid (4C) cell numbers in the testis showed that the increase in testis size from December to February was associated with a rapid expansion of the haploid cell compartment as spermatogenesis resumed. In addition, an increase in number of more mature cell types within the haploid cell population was observed over a 2-month period before the breeding season. The decline in testicular size from the middle of April until October was associated with a reduction in both the absolute and relative sizes of the haploid and tetraploid cell populations and a concomitant increase in the relative numbers of diploid cells. Measurements of the activity of the soluble Mn2+ -dependent adenylate cyclase revealed seasonal variations that closely paralleled those of the haploid cell population, indicating that, as in other species, the enzyme may be associated with maturing germ cells.  相似文献

The weights of testes, prostate gland and baculum of ringed seal males were related to age, season and differences in body size. There was a significant seasonal variation in testes and prostate gland size of sexually mature males, with a maximum occurring in early April. There were no seasonal changes in prostate weight of immature males, but some of the older immatures had elevated testes weights in April. Testes weight was significantly correlated with lean body mass. The increase in testes size with increasing body weight was greater for seals six years of age or older than for younger males. We suggest that some testicular growth and a seasonal cycle in testes growth occur before the testes become functional endocrinologically. We also believe that the primary event leading to puberty in ringed seals is an age-dependent shift in metabolic processes, directing a larger percentage of available energy towards the reproductive organs.  相似文献

The reproduction of the possum, Trichosurus vulpecula (Kerr), was investigated on Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, from 1963 to 1965. The majority of births occur in the autumn, but there is a minor breeding season in the spring. After undergoing an anoestrous period during the summer most females enter oestrus around April. A small proportion of females give birth to a second young during September or October. Reproductive periodicity was also found to occur in the male possum. Although spermatogenesis continues throughout the year in the sexually mature animal there is a marked change in the size of the prostatic urethra at particular periods of the year which correspond to those in which the majority of females are undergoing oestrus. The mean weight of the prostate shows a sixfold increase during the autumn. However only very small changes take place in the size of the testis and epididymis. Changes in size and activity of the prostate correspond with marked changes in the interstitial tissue of the testis. Leydig cells, responsible for the secretion of testosterone, show a great increase in number in animals in which the prostate is enlarged. Associated with the growth of the prostate are changes in the behaviour of the possum. The body weight and fat deposits of the male possum drop markedly at the time of the autumn breeding season.  相似文献

Synopsis Collections from a natural population of mosquitofish,Gambusia affinis, in southern Indiana showed that males born early in the breeding season mature rapidly at a small body size, while males born later in the breeding season delay maturation and achieve larger body sizes. A field experiment, involving removal of males from pond populations, was conducted to test the hypothesis that delayed maturation by late summer males is, at least in part, under social control. Mean total length (TL) of adult and maturing males in late summer in ponds from which large numbers of males had previously been removed was significantly lower than mean TL of males in control ponds. These data support the hypothesis of social control and support Sohn's competition-predation hypothesis for control of adult male body size inGambusia.  相似文献

The pituitary gland of Puntius sarana is of the leptobasic type and has three subdivisions--a proximal pars distalis (PPD), a rostral pars distalis (RPD) and a pars intermedia (PI) arranged vertically one below the other. The gonadotrophs (GTH cells) of the PPD were identified by their PAS, ATh, AF, aniline blue and alcian blue positivity and by their immunoreactivity to ovine anti-LH beta-subunit, anti-salmon GTH and anti-silver carp GTH. The testes of Puntius sarana have been classified as the "unrestricted type". The morphological, histological and histometric findings indicate that the testing passes through four distinct stages--preparatory, fully mature, spawning and spent. Spermatogenesis begins in January and continues up to July. The spawning season lasts from late July until October. Cyclical changes in the gonadotrophs correlate well with changes in the testes. The histometric data show that the GTH cells attain maximum values (size and number) during the breeding season. The peak values for testicular weight, lobule diameter, the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the sperm concentration in the testes, and the number, size and amount of secretory material in the cytoplasm of the gonadotrophs, coincide with the time of maximum environmental temperature and the longest days.  相似文献

Scrotal circumferences of 119 young bulls of four distinct breeding groups were measured at the end of a feedlot performance test and at the beginning of the breeding season when the bulls were approximately 14 months old, to study the relationships of weight and growth parameters with testes size. Scrotal circumference was positively correlated with body weight at the end of feedlot test in the four breeding groups. The association between scrotal circumference and body weight was much stronger in the breeding group which had been selected for low yeariing weight than in the other three breeding groups which had been selected for high growth rate. The relationships between scrotal circumference and preweaning and postweaning gain differed among the four breeding groups. Preweaning gain was the most important factor in the association between body weight and scrotal circumference among the three beef breeding groups. The results indicated that the preweaning stage was a critical period for testicular development and that the probability of finding beef bulls with smaller than average testes among the bulls selected for weaning weight would be relatively small. Scrotal circumference was reduced (2.5–11%) from the end of feedlot test until the beginning of the breeding season.  相似文献

This study of the sand goby Pomatoschistus minutus, a nest‐holding fish with paternal care, focused on gonadal investment among males of different sizes collected early and late in the breeding season. All males caught at the nest had breeding colour, whereas trawl‐caught fish consisted of males both with and without colour. The absence or presence of breeding colour was a good predictor of testes investment. Compared to males with breeding colour, males without colour were smaller in body size but had extraordinarily large testes. In absolute terms, testes mass of males without breeding colour was on average 3·4 times greater than those of males with breeding colour. Since small colourless males are known to reproduce as sneaker males, this heavy investment in testes probably reflects that they are forced to spawn under sperm competition. Contrary to testes size, sperm‐duct glands were largest among males with breeding colour. These glands produce mucins used for making sperm‐containing mucous trails that males place in the nest before and during spawning. Since both sneakers and nest‐holders potentially could benefit from having large glands, this result is intriguing. Yet, high mucus production may be more important for nest‐holders, because it also protects developing embryos from infections. There was no significant effect of season on body size, testes or sperm‐duct glands size, but colourless males tended to be less common late in the season. Possibly this may indicate that individual small colourless males develop into their more colourful counterparts within the breeding season.  相似文献

Notropis longirostris (Hay), the longnose shiner, in Catahoula Creek, Jourdan River drainage, Hancock County, Mississippi, was studied from May 1970 to May 1972. In 1971 reproduction occurred from late March into October, as indicated by gross examination of testes, breeding tubercles and breeding colour in males, and ovarian weights, measurements of ova, and gross examination of ovaries in females. Gross examination of ovaries in 1970 also indicated an extended reproductive season. Generally no significant differences from a 1 : 1 sex ratio or in the size of males and females in collections taken during the reproductive season were indicated. Males and females matured about the same size. Most females were sexually mature when 29–30 mm SL. The smallest female with mature ova was 28 mm; however, the majority of females did not have mature ova until 31–33 mm. The number of mature ova produced prior to spawning ranged from 15 to 129 for females 30.8–44 mm SL. There were significant differences in the number of mature ova with time, two peaks being indicated: the first in late March and April at the beginning of the reproductive period and the second in early July about the middle of the season. This conclusion is also supported by ovarian weight measurements and length frequency histograms. The mean diameters of mature ova ranged from 0.70–1.05 mm, averaging 0.90 mm, and were not significantly correlated with length. Most fish live about 1–1.5 years and do not live through two winters, indicating an annual turnover in the population. Maximum size was about 48 mm SL. Specific characteristics of the life history pattern of N. longirostris are discussed in relation to ecological conditions of the habitat.  相似文献

Short-term changes in testicular spermatozoa, testes weight, testes length, epididymes weight, epididymal spermatozoa, and body weight of adult and yearling male white-tailed deerOdocoileus virginianus (Zimmermann, 1780) were examined over a 9-week period that included the peak of the breeding season in South Carolina. Mean values for all characteristics were significantly greater in adults compared to yearlings. Values for reproductive characteristics tended to be highest during the last week in October or the first week in November and decreased over the course of the investigation. Body weight of adults decreased from late October through early December, whereas body weight of yearlings fluctuated only slightly throughout the 9-week period. Significant correlations were observed among all reproductive characteristics and body weight was highly correlated with all characteristics except testicular spermatozoa. Values for reproductive characteristics differed significantly between the right and left sides of the reproductive tracts. Results demonstrate the occurrence of short-term changes in reproductive capabilities of white-tailed deer that are relevant for the development of management strategies for this species.  相似文献

Breeding records of 11 taxa of captive lemurs housed at the Duke University Primate Center (DUPC), North Carolina, were analyzed for differences in the timing of births, for the relationship between breeding season and photoperiod, and for differences in litter size. At DUPC there are significant differences in the timing of births among certain taxa, including differences among some subspecies of Lemur fulvus.However, changes in latitude result in changes in the timing of the breeding season. Lemurs moved to higher latitudes mate at lower light-dark ratios than on Madagascar. The data presented here are consistent with the following model: a photoperiodic cue initiating reproductive activity, presumably a light-dark threshold, precedes the actual mating season by approximately 2 months, with an intervening period of physiological and social preparation. On Madagascar, selection may have favored births that coincide with the end of dry seasons and the beginning of wet seasons, which results in lactation and weaning during times of resource abundance. Taxa from the north and east have the highest mean litter sizes; those from the west have the lowest.  相似文献

1.?Studies examining changes in the scheduling of breeding in response to climate change have focused on species with well-defined breeding seasons. Species exhibiting year-round breeding have received little attention and the magnitudes of any responses are unknown. 2.?We investigated phenological data for an enclosed feral population of cattle (Bos taurus L.) in northern England exhibiting year-round breeding. This population is relatively free of human interference. 3.?We assessed whether the timing of births had changed over the last 60 years, in response to increasing winter and spring temperatures, changes in herd density, and a regime of lime fertilisation. 4.?Median birth date became earlier by 1·0 days per year. Analyses of the seasonal distribution of calving dates showed that significantly fewer calves were born in summer (decline from 44% of total births to 20%) and significantly more in winter (increase from 12% to 30%) over the study period. The most pronounced changes occurred in winter, with significant increases in both the proportion and number of births. Winter births arise from conceptions in the previous spring, and we considered models that investigated climate and weather variables associated with the winter preceding and the spring of conceptions. 5.?The proportion of winter births was higher when the onset of the plant growing season was earlier during the spring of conceptions. This relationship was much weaker during years when the site had been fertilised with lime, suggesting that increased forage biomass was over-riding the impacts of changing plant phenology. When the onset of the growing season was late, winter births increased with female density. 6.?Recruitment estimates from a stage-structured state-space population model were significantly negatively correlated with the proportion of births in the preceding winter, suggesting that calves born in winter are less likely to survive than those born in other seasons. 7.?This is one of the first studies to document changes in the phenology of a year-round breeder, suggesting that the impact of climate on the scheduling of biological events may be more extensive than previously thought and that impacts may be negative, even for species with relatively flexible breeding strategies.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Clethrionomys glareolus Schr.and Apodemus sylvaticus (L.) in mixed woodland in County Durham, were studied from March 1963 to January 1965. Two areas of 0.9 ha (2.25 acres) each were trapped monthly and information was obtained on population size, reproduction, survival and growth from marked animals.
Clethrionomys populations increased from June to an autumn peak; then declined, at first rapidly, but then more slowly in winter, before reaching a spring trough. The breeding season of Clethrionomys was from May to December; juveniles were caught from mid-June to December. Survival was in general poor during the breeding season but good at other times. Survival of young born early in the summer was particularly good on one of the areas and some individuals lived long enough to breed in two successive years. On both areas young born early in the year matured rapidly and bred in the year of their birth. Young born in late summer and early autumn ceased growing at a weight of about 14.5 g, remained immature, and formed the bulk of the overwintering population. Growth was completed at the time of sexual maturation the following spring.
Trapping failed to provide adequate samples of juvenile Apodemus in summer to account for subsequent recruitment. The possibility that a substantial proportion of the adult population of this species was also either trap shy or had emigrated temporarily is discussed. Breeding occurred from April until the following January, but the numbers trapped remained very low throughout the early months of the breeding season. Large scale recruitment of young fecund animals into the trap-revealed population occurred during the autumn. Apodemus males continued to grow rapidly during the winter.  相似文献

Single- and multi-brooded species of birds differ in their seasonal patterns of clutch size. Single-brooded species start with a maximum clutch size that declines continuously as the season progresses, whereas the clutch sizes of multi-brooded species usually increase to a mid-season maximum peak and then decrease progressively until the end of the breeding season. Previous studies have shown that multi-brooded migrant species present seasonal patterns that are similar to single-brooded species at high latitudes but similar to multi-brooded non-migratory species at lower latitudes. We studied the Greenfinch Carduelis chloris and Goldfinch C. carduelis populations in eastern Spain (Sagunto, Valencia) between 1975 and 2002 to compare seasonal variations in clutch sizes between years with early and late starts to the breeding season. The period over which clutch sizes increase was longer when the breeding season started earlier. The Goldfinch population showed no pattern of initial increase in clutch size when there was a late start to the breeding season: a late start shortens the season giving them less time to breed, and may also coincide with maximum food availability. Thus, the pattern of single-brooded species was observed. In the Greenfinch population, a trend toward the seasonal pattern of single-brooded species was also observed when the following indices were compared: clutch size increase, modal timing, initial slope and timing of maximum clutch size. We have also compared the seasonal patterns of clutch size of both species in eastern Spain with the patterns observed in Britain. Our results show that for both Goldfinches and Greenfinches, the non-migrant southern populations of Sagunto in eastern Spain do not tend towards a more multi-brooded seasonal pattern of clutch size than the migrant Goldfinches of Britain.  相似文献

Highly seasonal breeding has been considered one of the keys to understanding Malagasy primate socioecology. Strict seasonal breeding may be particularly critical for Malagasy primates because they live in such energetically challenging seasonal environments. Lemurs also live in highly unpredictable environments, and there is growing evidence that reproductive timing may be mediated by additional factors, suggesting that more relaxed breeding seasonality is adaptive in some cases. I tested the adaptive breadth of the birth peak in Eulemur rubriventer, which breed in several different months. I describe reproduction in the species by determining the timing and extent of the birth season (period in which all births occur) and birth peak (period in which the majority of births occur); test whether relaxed reproductive seasonality might increase reproductive success by comparing infant mortality within and outside the birth peak; and model the extent to which fruit availability has an influence on the timing of reproduction. I collected birth data on 5 groups in 2003–2005, which I combined with demographic data that D. Overdorff collected from 5 focal groups and additional censused groups between 1988 and 1996. Thirty births occurred in 8 different months. Births were significantly seasonal, with a unimodal birth peak in late August/September/October, and a mean birth date of October 11. Twenty-three births (76.7%) occurred within 54 d (14.79%) of the year. No births occurred May–July, indicating that conceptions did not occur from late December through late February, and cycling (estimated using gestation length) did not occur until ca. 101 d after the austral summer solstice (December 21). Of 22 infants followed regularly, 18 were born in the birth peak, of which 2 died (11%). All 4 infants born out of season died. Based on fruit availability, I calculated a Theoretical Overlap index (T), which indicated a 3-mo window with optimal food conditions for reproduction. This window corresponded to the timing and breadth of the birth peak in Eulemur rubriventer. These results indicate that a breeding season >3 mo within a given year is not adaptive in the species, likely due in large part to the availability of fruit during key reproductive stages, particularly before breeding.  相似文献

The accessory reproductive glands of male mammals contribute the bulk of the secretions in which spermatozoa are transported to the female tract during copulation. Despite their morphological diversity,and the chemical complexity of their products,little is known about the possible effects of sexual selection upon these glands in mammals. Here we consider the seminal vesicles and prostate glands in a sample of 89 species and 60 genera representing 8 Orders of mammals. The sizes of the accessory glands are analysed in relation to body weight and testes weight. Both the seminal vesicles size and prostate size (corrected for body weight) correlate positively with relative testes size in this sample; this finding remains highly significant after application of procedures to correct for possible phylogenetic biases in the data set. The accessory reproductive glands are also significantly larger in those mammals which have large relative testes sizes,and in which the likelihood of sperm competition is greatest. These results support the hypothesis that sexual selection has played an important role in the evolution of the mammalian prostate gland and seminal vesicles.  相似文献

The Cox Proportional Hazards Regression Model was used to examine ecological and sociodemographic correlates of mortality among 164 immature yellow baboons born over an 8-year period at Mikumi National Park, Tanzania. Ecological correlates were derived from seasonal rainfall. Mortality was lowest for immatures born during the late rainy season, when it was likely that nourishment for pregnant and lactating females was greatest. High mortality was associated with above-average rainfall early in the immature's first complete rainy season. This association may result from one or more of the following: exposure, increased ranging, or accelerated vegetation growth, each of which is thought to increase hazards for weanlings. When births for the 8 years of the study were pooled, a birth peak occurred during the early dry season. The larger number of births during a birth peak should intensify competition among mothers and among immatures. Mortality was greatest for immature females born during the season immediately following the birth peak, while lowest for immature females born during the season immediately preceding the peak. Immature female mortality was greatest when the troop size at birth was large, and was most severe for females born to low ranking mothers. The sociodemographic results are consistent with Wasser's hypothesis that cooperative attacks of female baboons upon other troop females suppress the others' reproduction and the vitality of their infants, thereby improving the relative competitive position of the attackers' own young.  相似文献

Relationships between testes weight, body weight and mating systems were examined in 40 marsupial species and in the extant monotremes. Relationships between relative testes weight and mating systems in marsupials resemble those previously described for primates. Thus relative testes weights are greatest in those marsupials where females mate with multiple males during the fertile period, i.e. polyandrous species (e.g. Antechinus ftavipes, Isoodon obesulus, Perameles nasuta, Potorous tridactylus, Macropus eugenii and M. agilis) and smallest in monandrous forms (e.g. Petauroides volans and Petaurus breviceps ) where females usually mate with a single male. These findings are consistent with effects of sperm competition upon the evolution of relative testes sizes in marsupials. Where field studies on marsupial mating systems are lacking, we make predictions based upon examination of their relative testes weights. Tarsipes rostratus, Acrobates pygmaeus, Macropus rufogriseus and Sarcophilus harrisii are predicted to engage in multiple matings and sperm competition. Conversely, Lasiorhinus latifrons, Cercatetus concinnus and Pseudoantechinus macdonnellensis are predicted to be monandrous in their mating behaviour. The monotremes ( Ornithorhynchus anatinus, Tachyglossus aculeatus and Zaglossus bruijnii ) are characterized by possession of very large testes; monotremes are shown to have significantly greater relative testes weights than marsupials, primates or avian species. This taxonomic difference is unlikely to be related lo the occurrence of oviparity or to the abdominal position of the testes in the Monotremata. Their mating systems are not known in detail, but some evidence for multiple matings (and hence for sperm competition) exists for Tachyglossus aculeatus so that their large testes may be adaptive in this context.  相似文献

Newts were collected throughout the year from both breeding ponds and terrestrial sites and were weighed, measured and dissected; in males, the testes were examined histologically. Smooth newts show post-nuptial gametogenesis such that, during late summer and autumn they are producing mature gametes for the following year's breeding season. In males, the testes are at their smallest size during the spring, when they consist mostly of immature sperm cysts and evacuated tissue, mature sperm having been evacuated into the vasa deferentia during the newts' migration to water. Evacuated testicular tissue is glandular in function and there is evidence that secretions from this tissue control the development of secondary sexual characters: the dorsal crest, fringes of skin on the toes and the dorsal cloacal gland. In both sexes, fat body and liver weights are lowest in the spring and increase in the autumn. In females, oocytes vary in size, depending on the amount of yolk they contain. Only the larger oocytes are laid in a current breeding season, the smaller ones being retained and yolked in late summer and autumn. In both sexes, measures of fecundity (testis size in males, oocyte number in females) are strongly correlated with body size. The finding that male newts have a finite supply of sperm during the breeding season leads to an interpretation of various aspects of male courtship behaviour. These are adaptations for conserving sperm and allocating it to courtship encounters in a way likely to promote male reproductive success.  相似文献
