Modelling niche and neutral dynamics: on the ecological interpretation of variation partitioning results 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Many studies have attempted to disentangle the effects of neutral and niche‐mediated processes on community composition using partial Mantel tests and variance partitioning on dissimilarity matrices. Recently, doubts about the reliability of these methods have emerged. Here we explore how the results are affected by three confounding factors that may affect ecological data to different degrees: spatial autocorrelation of the environmental variables, length of the compositional gradient, and sampling noise. We document that the statistical hypotheses tested in these methods may or may not correspond to the ecological hypotheses of interest. A major discrepancy emerges if a large proportion of sampling units in the analysed dataset share no species, in which case compositional dissimilarities saturate to a fixed maximum value although explanatory dissimilarities do not. With increasing dissimilarity saturation, the explanatory power of regression models decrease, which may lead to the erroneous conclusion that the ecological processes represented by the explanatory variables are not operating. A survey of recent literature suggests that there is a general lack of awareness of this problem, although it appears to affect > 10% of relevant studies. Our simulations show that if dissimilarity saturation is due to a long ecological gradient, extended dissimilarities essentially solve the problem for any degree of saturation. Using distances from a hybrid multidimensional scaling alleviates the saturation problem when the degree of saturation is < 60%. However, neither correction method can provide a solution to problems caused by insufficient sampling. How the presence of multiple explanatory gradients in combination with sampling noise affects overall analysis performance remains to be clarified. 相似文献

Electrophoretic variation at three enzyme loci-alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh), glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (Gpdh), triosephosphate isomerase (Tpi)- is compared in Australian Drosophila melanogaster populations at three levels of spatial heterogeneity; among breeding sites, within populations, and between populations at the geographic level. Heterogeneity at the breeding site level greatly exceeds that among adults within populations, indicating greater intermixing at the mobile adult stage than at the developmentally immature and less migratory larval stage. Heterogeneity at the microspatial level is large relative to the geographic level at two of these loci. Spatial patterns of variation in ecological phenotypes are also considered. It is argued that electrophoretic variants may contribute little to an understanding of this quantitative variation, and that a more useful approach in ecological genetics is to consider ecological phenotypes as primary data. 相似文献

Ecological systems contain a huge amount of quantitative variation between and within species and locations, which makes it difficult to obtain unambiguous verification of theoretical predictions. Ordinary experiments consider just a few explanatory factors and are prone to providing oversimplified answers because they ignore the complexity of the factors that underlie variation. We used multi-objective optimization (MO) for a mechanistic analysis of the potential ecological and evolutionary causes and consequences of variation in the life-history traits of a species of moth. Optimal life-history solutions were sought for environmental conditions where different life stages of the moth were subject to predation and other known fitness-reducing factors in a manner that was dependent on the duration of these life stages and on variable mortality rates. We found that multi-objective optimal solutions to these conditions that the moths regularly experience explained most of the life-history variation within this species. Our results demonstrate that variation can have a causal interpretation even for organisms under steady conditions. The results suggest that weather and species interactions can act as underlying causes of variation, and MO acts as a corresponding adaptive mechanism that maintains variation in the traits of organisms. 相似文献

The machinery was developed to investigate the behavior of quantitative genetic variation in an ecological model of a finite number of islands of finite size, with migration rate m and extinction rate e, for a quantitative genetic model general for numbers of alleles and loci and additive, dominance, and additive by additive epistatic effects. It was necessary to reckon with seven quadratic genetic components, whose coefficients in the genotypic variance components within demes, sigma Gw2, between demes within populations, sigma s2, and between replicate populations, sigma r2, are given by descent measures. The descent measures at any time are calculated with the use of transition equations which are determined by the parameters of the ecological model. Numerical results were obtained for the coefficients of the quadratic genetic components in each of the three genotypic variance components in the early phase of differentiation. The general effect of extinction is to speed up the time course leading to fixation, to increase sigma r2, and to decrease sigma s2 (with a few exceptions) in comparison with no extinction. The general effect of migration is to slow down the time course leading to fixation, to increase sigma Gw2, at least in the later generations, and to decrease sigma s2 (with a few exceptions) in comparison with no migration. Except for these, the effects of migration and extinction on the variance components are complex, depending on the genetic model, and sometimes involve interaction of migration and extinction. Sufficient details are given for an investigator to evaluate numerically the results for variations in the quantitative genetic and ecological models. 相似文献

The present review deals with the studies conducted on the impact of phosphorus on growth of aquatic plants causing eutrophication in well-known water bodies the world over. The review covers the definition and concept of eutrophication and the adverse effects on quality and ecosystem functioning. The eutrophication of several water bodies leads to significant changes in the structure and function of the aquatic ecosystem. Several activities of human interest, including navigation and power generation, are hampered. A large number of lakes in the United States, Europe, and Asia have recently been found to be highly eutrophic. Water, the precious fluid, is not uniformly distributed throughout the surface of the earth. Most of the water bodies world over are surrounded with densely populated human settlement areas and agricultural fields. The size of smaller water bodies in human settlement areas is on the decrease with rise in population. After treatment, a large quantity of sewage from the households is regularly discharged into the water bodies. The runoff brings down fertilizers and other chemicals from agricultural fields. The phosphorus contained in these effluents is known to promote excessive growth of plants. This review is an account of the role, sources, and monitoring of phosphorus, as well as its cycle. The natural phosphorus cycle originating from the weathering of phosphate rock is now a two-way operation, due to significant addition of phosphorus from anthropogenic sources. The detergents that are the major source of phosphorus inputs into water bodies (through sewage and drainage systems) have been thoroughly discussed. The major part of detergents comprises builders containing polyphosphate salts. An environment-friendly and effective synthetic builder is yet to be developed to replace existing phosphorus containing builders of detergents. The utility of the alternative builders available has been reviewed. Nitrogen has also been reported to affect the phytoplankton production in eutrophic waters in temperate regions. Several environmental factors have also been found to add to the problem of eutrophication in addition to nutrients. Several limiting factors—namely, CO2 level, temperature, pH, light, and dissolved oxygen—are known to affect eutrophic water bodies. Eutrophication not only results in algal bloom but also affects wetland plants and activates early onset of natural succession at a relatively faster rate. Some of the plant species reported and studied world over are the best indicators of the level of eutrophication. The studies on the change in structure, function, and diversity of the ecosystem have been used as parameters to assess the level of eutrophication. In several countries adequate control measures have been adopted in to control eutrophication. But these measures were found to be only partially effective in controlling the phosphorus unloading in water bodies. In this review some control measures are suggested, with emphasis on biological control. The review concludes by taking into account the ecological prospective of the water—the precious fluid and a basis of life on the earth. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: BackgroundsTension-type headache is a common psychosomatic disease. However, diurnal variation of headache is yet to be clarified, perhaps due to the lack of an appropriate method to investigate it. Like other painful diseases, it would be helpful to know if there is diurnal variation in tension-type headaches, both for managing headaches and understanding their pathophysiology. The aim of this study was to determine if there is diurnal variation in the intensity and exacerbation of tension-type headache. METHODS: Patients (N = 31) with tension-type headache recorded for one week their momentary headache intensity several times a day and their acute headache exacerbations using a watch-type computer as an electronic diary (computerized ecological momentary assessment). Multilevel modeling was used to test the effects of time of day on momentary headache intensity and on the occurrence of acute exacerbations. RESULTS: A significant diurnal variation in momentary headache intensity was shown (P = 0.0005), with the weakest headaches in the morning and a peak in the late afternoon. A between-individual difference in the diurnal pattern was suggested. On-demand medication use was associated with a different diurnal pattern (P = 0.025), suggesting that headache intensity decreases earlier in the evening in subjects who used on-demand medication, while headache subtype, prophylactic medication use, and sex were not associated with the difference. The occurrence of acute headache exacerbation also showed a significant diurnal variation, with a peak after noon (P = 0.0015). CONCLUSIONS: Tension-type headache was shown to have a significant diurnal variation. The relation to pathophysiology and psychosocial aspects needs to be further explored. 相似文献

Summary Principal components analysis is well suited for many data analysis problems in ecology, particularly for data reduction and hypothesis generation; but the structure of PCA is poorly suited for indirect gradient analysis. Eight Indian laboratory stocks of Anopheles stephensi Liston could be grouped into three categories with, respectively, 14-22, 12-17 and 9-15 ridges on the egg-floats. The mode number of ridges among the eggs laid by individual females in these stocks was 16-19, 13-16 and 10-14, respectively. The category with the highest egg-float ridge number corresponded with the type-form and the lowest with var. mysorensis Sweet and Rao; the new egg-float category with ridge number modes of thirteen to sixteen was designated as 'intermediate'. All three forms, i.e. type-form, intermediate and myosorensis were observed in semi-urban areas while only intermediate and mysorensis were seen in rural areas. Breeding experiments indicated no post-copulatory barriers between the populations. Likelihood analysis of the results of crosses and back crosses indicated that variation in ridge number is controlled by more than one genetic factor. The stocks with different ridge numbers are best considered as 'ecological variants'. 相似文献

Inbreeding depression is expected to play an important but complicated role in evolution. If we are to understand the evolution of inbreeding depression (i.e., purging), we need quantitative genetic interpretations of its variation. We introduce an experimental design in which sires are mated to multiple dams, some of which are unrelated to the sire but others are genetically related owing to an arbitrary number of prior generations of selfing or sib-mating. In this way we introduce the concept of "inbreeding depression effect variance," a parameter more relevant to selection and the purging of inbreeding depression than previous measures. We develop an approach for interpreting the genetic basis of the variation in inbreeding depression by: (1) predicting the variation in inbreeding depression given arbitrary initial genetic variance and (2) estimating genetic variance components given half-sib covariances estimated by our experimental design. As quantitative predictions of selection depend upon understanding genetic variation, our approach reveals the important difference between how inbreeding depression is measured experimentally and how it is viewed by selection. 相似文献

Mexican Americans are a numerous and fast growing ethnic population in the United States. Yet little is known about their genetic structure. Since they are a hybrid, it is of interest to identify their parental populations and to estimate the relative contributions of these groups. This information is relevant to historical, biomedical, and evolutionary concerns. New genetic typings on 730 Arizona Mexican Americans for the HLA-A, HLA-B, ABO, Rh, MNSs, Duffy, Kidd, and Kell loci are presented here and they are used to estimate ancestral contributions. We considered both a dihybrid model with Amerindians and Spaniards as proposed ancestors, and a trihybrid model with Amerindians, Spaniards, and Africans as proposed ancestors. A modified weighted least squares method that allows for linkage disequilibrium was used to estimate ancestral contributions for each model. The following admixture estimates were obtained: Amerindian, 0.29 +/- 0.04; Spaniard, 0.68 +/- 0.05; and African, 0.03 +/- 0.02. The interpretation of these results with respect to Amerindian and Spanish ancestry is straightforward. African ancestry is strongly supported by the presence of a marker of African descent, Fy, despite the fact that the standard error of the estimate is as large as the estimated admixture proportion. An evaluation of the sensitivity of these results to a number of variables is presented: 1) our choices of ancestral allele frequencies, 2) the possibility of selection at HLA and the blood groups, and 3) genetic drift in Mexican Americans. 相似文献
