The present study compared the plasma corticosterone concentrations between meat- and layer-type neonatal chicks (Gallus gallus) (1) exposed to isolation-induced stress or (2) injected intracerebroventricularly (ICV) with corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF). Both types of neonatal chicks housed in groups were individually introduced to an open field arena and locomotion and distress-induced vocalizations were monitored for 10 min. The responses of the two strains were remarkably different, with meat-type chicks being less active than layer-type chicks. Distress-induced vocalizations were drastically decreased over time in meat-type chicks while they remained high in layer-type chicks throughout the test. Plasma corticosterone concentrations measured at the end of the test were significantly higher in layer-type chicks than in meat-type ones. Plasma corticosterone concentrations measured 10 min after the ICV injection of CRF were significantly higher in layer- than meat-type chicks. These results indicate that meat-type chicks have either a greater capability to acclimatize to novel environments, or a blunted HPA axis compared with layer-type chicks.  相似文献

Plasma levels of both adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone (B) were determined in embryos (day 15 of incubation), chicks (day 3 after hatch) and young chickens (8 weeks). Experimental animals were bursectomized at 80 hr of incubation, i.e., before any anlage of the bursa of Fabricius could develop. Bursectomized (BFX) animals were compared to sham-operated controls (T), in basal, resting condition and 7 (ACTH) or 14 min (B) after ether stress was delivered for 30 sec. Basal B and ACTH levels seemed not to be significantly modified in BFX embryos, chicks and chickens. Hypophysial and adrenocortical response to stress appeared more precociously in BFX embryos (day 15 of incubation) than in intact ones (day 19). The non stress-responsive period that was observed for one week after hatch of T birds did not appear in 3-day-old BFX chicks whose both B and ACTH stress-induced levels were as high as in intact adults. In contrast, adrenocortical and pituitary corticotropic responses to stress were markedly impaired (by 50%) in adult BFX chickens as compared to intact controls.  相似文献

Diurnal variations in the learning performance of young chicks were investigated using a visual discrimination task which requires birds to discrminate grains from a background of pebbles. Chicks accustomed to receiving fresh food daily in the morning were found to learn well during the day, in that they pecked almost exclusively at grains; but during the night they pecked indiscriminately at grains and pebbles. This occurred even though food was available ad libitum. Chicks accustomed to receiving fresh food daily in the evening learnt the task during the day, and also late at night. Thus the shape of the performance cycle depends in part on environmental factors. Other factors, such as activity, which may contribute to, or co-vary with, this variation in learning performance were investigated.  相似文献

Disturbance during development may have lasting effects on the growth rates and stress physiology of birds. Although repeated handling by researchers is often necessary, the possible effects of such handling on the development of semi‐altricial young are unclear. We examined the effect of daily handling on growth rates and plasma corticosterone levels of Leach's Storm‐Petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa) chicks on Kent Island in the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, Canada, during the 2011 nesting season. From post‐hatch day 7 to post‐hatch days 14–36, birds in the experimental group were extracted from burrows and measured (wing, tarsus, and mass) for ~3 min every day, whereas birds in the control group were left undisturbed. After the treatment period, blood was collected from birds in both groups within 3 min of initially reaching into burrows (baseline) and after a 30‐min restraint stress test to assess the effect of early life disturbance on programming of the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal (HPA) axis. A second acute restraint stress test was conducted three weeks after the end of the treatment period to investigate possible longer term effects of early life disturbance. Growth rates of wings and tarsi were similar for handled chicks (N = 18) and non‐handled control chicks (N = 21), as were baseline and 30‐min acute restraint stress‐induced corticosterone levels. As also reported in previous studies of other altricial and semi‐altricial species, older chicks (42–64 d old) had higher plasma corticosterone levels than younger chicks (21–43 d old) after acute restraint stress tests, reflecting delayed development of the HPA axis. The age‐related increase in HPA axis sensitivity observed prior to fledging could facilitate foraging and predator avoidance behaviors while minimizing exposure to high levels of corticosterone earlier in development. Overall, we found no evidence that repeated disturbance influenced either growth rates or HPA axis programming of Leach's Storm‐Petrel chicks.  相似文献

Abstract Two experiments compared broods that were naturally tick-infested with an equal number that were rendered tick-free by application of an acaricide to their nests and of barriers against further infestation. In the first experiment conducted in 1991–92 nestlings in tick-infested broods had up to 159 larval ticks at once and a mean infestation of 23.6 larval ticks per chick per day. The chick's mean tick load was inversely correlated with its longevity. Chicks that survived to at least 18 days post-hatching had significantly lower larval tick loads than those that died by 18 days, excluding the third-hatched chick in each brood whose survival rate was low irrespective of tick-infestation. At 7 days post-hatching, tick-infested chicks had a lower haematocrit and higher polychromasia than tick-free chicks. I infer that blood loss anaemia caused the deaths of tick-infested chicks in their first week. None died in their second week and the demise of those in their third week may have been due to the paralysis manifested prior to their death. I conclude that heavy tick infestation of their chicks reduced the breeding success of the parent egrets below that of the egrets whose chicks were kept free of ticks. In the second experiment in the 1992–93 season the mean level of tick infestation was much lower (5.1 per chick) and these chicks survived equally with tick-free chicks through fledging.  相似文献

Maternal hormones may represent an important pathway by which mothers can adaptively adjust offspring traits and performance to suit the prevailing environmental conditions. Earlier studies of birds have shown that egg androgens of maternal origin may enhance post-natal offspring 'begging' displays, functioning to solicit parental care. Here we investigate the effects of elevated egg androgen levels on the prenatal begging behavior of yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) chicks. At laying, we experimentally increased the concentration of yolk testosterone (T) within the natural range of variation, and, shortly before hatching, we compared the structural properties, rate, and loudness of vocalizations of embryos developing in T- and oil-injected (control) eggs. In addition, we compared the early post-hatch begging rate (measured as the pecking rate towards a dummy gull head) in chicks of the two experimental groups. We found that T embryos produced louder embryonic vocalizations than controls, whereas structural properties and the calling rate did not differ between T and control embryos. The post-hatch begging rate was unaffected by T treatment, but strongly decreased with increasing chick body mass, suggesting that intensity of the begging display was sensitive to chick state and may therefore reliably indicate the need of food in this species. Therefore, the results of this study show for the first time that prenatal T exposure modulates the quality of embryonic vocalizations, but are not in accordance with previous findings reporting increased post-hatching begging intensity following increased prenatal exposure to androgens.  相似文献

Seabird chicks respond to food shortages by increasing corticosterone (cort) secretion, which is probably associated with fitness benefits and costs. To examine this, we experimentally increased levels of circulating cort in captive black-legged kittiwake chicks fed ad libitum. We found that cort-implanted chicks begged more frequently and were more aggressive compared to controls. These behavioral modifications must be beneficial to chicks as they facilitate acquisition of food from the parents and might trigger brood reduction and reduced competition for food. Cort-implanted chicks also increased food intake; however, their growth rates were similar to controls. To examine the costs of chronically increased circulating levels of cort, we removed cort implants and, after a 10-day recovery period, tested cognitive abilities of young kittiwakes. We found that the ability of kittiwakes to associate a visual cue with the presence of food in a choice situation was compromised by the experimental elevation of cort during development. To examine the long-term costs of increased levels of cort, 8 months later we tested the performance of the same individuals in a spatial task requiring them to make a detour around a barrier in order to escape from an enclosure. Individuals treated with cort during development took significantly more time to solve this task compared to controls. The results of this study suggest that the adrenocortical response of a developing bird to environmental stressors is associated with both benefits (increased food intake, foraging behavior, and aggression) and costs (low growth efficiency and compromised cognitive abilities later in life). This provides an evolutionary framework for relating juvenile physiological traits to fitness of birds in subsequent life-history stages.  相似文献

Studies have demonstrated an effect of yolk testosterone levels on the physiology and behavior of nestling birds. In order to investigate this phenomenon experimentally in a precocial bird, we enhanced yolk testosterone, but within the physiological range, by injecting 50 ng testosterone in ethanol into Japanese quail Coturnix japonica eggs prior to incubation. The chicks hatching from these as well as from control eggs that had received the carrier-only or were left unmanipulated were subject to a number of behavioral tests from hatching to the age of 3 weeks. In addition, fecal samples were taken during a 90-min isolation period to determine a physiological response to a stressor. Experimental chicks performed a detour task faster and approached novel objects sooner than did the controls. Chicks from treated eggs took a longer time to start distress vocalizing and also produced less distress calls during open-field trials, took on average a larger number of trials for them to show tonic immobility and also excreted lower levels of corticosterone metabolites (BM) than did the controls. In response to a stressor, excreted BM was initially higher in the control chicks, as compared to the experimental birds. Induced behavioral effects were independent of sex with no sex treatment interactions found. In sum, experimentally enhanced testosterone levels in the eggs shifted individual behavioral phenotype towards "bold" or "proactive", irrespective of sex. We conclude that testosterone in the yolk influences the coping style of hatchlings and may be a potential means of maternal influence on offspring phenotype.  相似文献

Previously, we reported that thermal conditioning at 39°C on days 13–17 of incubation of broiler eggs enabled thermotolerance during post-hatch growth (J. Therm. Biol. 28 (2003) 133). Tolerance to a temperature of 30°C was accompanied by changes in thyroid hormones and metabolic parameters. In the current study, we determined the mechanism of epigenetic heat adaptation during embryonic age by measuring blood physiological parameters that may be associated with the ultimate effects of thermal conditioning. Hatching eggs from Ross breeders were subjected to heat treatment of 39°C at days 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 of incubation for 2 h per day. Control eggs were incubated at 37.6°C. Samples of eggs were withdrawn on each day of thermal conditioning and at internal pipping (IP) to obtain blood samples from embryos. The remaining eggs were weighed at day 18 and transferred to hatchers. The timing of IP, external pipping (EP) and hatching were monitored every 2 h. At hatch, chicks were weighed and hatchability was determined. Blood samples were obtained from samples of day-old chicks. T3, T4, corticosterone, pCO2, pO2 levels were determined in the blood. Blood pH was measured and T3/T4 ratios were calculated. Heat conditioning significantly increased corticosterone and pO2 levels and blood pH but depressed pCO2 at day 14. These were followed by a significant depression of T4 level on day 15. Remarkably, at day 16, all these parameters were back to normal as in the control embryos. Hatching was delayed by thermal conditioning probably as a result of the depressed corticosterone levels at IP. Hatchability was also lower in the heat-treated group but 1-day old chick weights were comparable to those of the controls. The result suggests that epigenetic thermal conditioning involves changes in these physiological parameters and probably serve as a method for epigenetic temperature adaptation since the same mechanisms are employed for coping with heat during post-embryonic growth. It also suggests that days 14–15 may be the optimal and most sensitive timing for evoking this mechanism during embryonic development. The adverse effects of heat treatment observed in this study may have been due to the continued exposure to heat until day 17. Fine-tuning thermal conditioning to days 14–15 only may improve these production parameters.  相似文献

Parent black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) and their dependent chicks respond to food shortages by increasing circulatinglevels of corticosterone. To examine the behavioral significanceof corticosterone release, we experimentally increased levelsof circulating corticosterone in parents and chicks up to thelevels observed during food shortages. We found that corticosterone-implantedchicks begged more frequently than sham-implanted controls.Corticosterone-implanted chicks in broods of two begged morefrequently than singletons. Parent kittiwakes then respondedto the increase in corticosterone levels in their chicks byincreasing chick-feeding rates. However, feeding rates werenot different among corticosterone-implanted chicks in broodsof two and singletons. We also found that corticosterone-implantedparents spent more time away from the nest—perhaps foraging—andless time brooding/guarding chicks than sham-implanted controls.Untreated mates of the corticosterone-implanted bird did notcompensate for the change in their partner's behavior; consequently, chicks were left unattended about 20% of the time compared to1% at the control nests. However, corticosterone-implantedparents did not decrease their chick-feeding rates. Our findingssuggest two functional implications of the increased corticosteronesecretion during food shortages in the black-legged kittiwake:it facilitates begging in chicks, and it affects time allocatedby parents to guarding young at the nest. Thus, release of corticosterone might provide a mechanistic link between physiological condition and behavioral interactions among adults and theiryoung.  相似文献

Aposematic insects use warning colours to deter predators, but many also produce odours or sounds when attacked by a predator. One possible role for these additional components is that they promote the association between the warning colour and the non-profitability it signals, thus reducing the chance of future attacks from visually hunting predators. This experiment explicitly tests this idea by looking at the effects of sound on a visual discrimination task. Young domestic chicks were trained to look for food rewards under coloured paper cones scattered in an experimental arena. In a subsequent visual discrimination task, they learned to discriminate between rewarded and non-rewarded hats on the basis of colour. Half the chicks performed this task in silence, whilst the other half had a tone played when they attacked non-rewarded hats. The presence of the tone improved the speed of colour discrimination learning. This demonstrates that there could be a selective advantage for aposematic coloured insects to emit sounds when attacked, since avian predators will learn to avoid their coloration more quickly. The role of psychological interactions between signal components in receivers is discussed in relation to the evolution of multimodal displays.  相似文献

Eggs of vertebrates contain steroid hormones of maternal origin that may influence offspring performance. Recently, it has been shown that glucocorticoids, which are the main hormones mediating the stress response in vertebrates, are transmitted from the mother to the egg in birds. In addition, mothers with experimentally elevated corticosterone levels lay eggs with larger concentrations of the hormone, which produce slow growing offspring with high activity of the hypothalamo-adrenal axis under acute stress. However, the effects and function of transfer of maternal corticosterone to the eggs are largely unknown. In the present study, we injected corticosterone in freshly laid eggs of yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis), thus increasing the concentration of the hormone within its natural range of variation, and analyzed the effect of manipulation on behavioral, morphological, and immune traits of the offspring in the wild. Eggs injected with corticosterone had similar hatching success to controls, but hatched later. Mass loss during incubation was greater for corticosterone-treated eggs, except for the last laid ones. Corticosterone injection reduced rate and loudness of late embryonic vocalizations and the intensity of chick begging display. Tonic immobility response, reflecting innate fearfulness, was unaffected by hormone treatment. Elevated egg corticosterone concentrations depressed T-cell-mediated immunity but had no detectable effects on humoral immune response to a novel antigen, viability at day 10, or growth. Present results suggest that egg corticosterone can affect the behavior and immunity of offspring in birds and disclose a mechanism mediating early maternal effects whereby stress experienced by females may negatively translate to offspring phenotypic quality.  相似文献

Utilizing RNA blot hybridization and immunoblotting techniques, the changes of the hepatic contents of acetyl-CoA carboxylase mRNA and of the enzyme protein in growing chicks have been investigated. In the post-hatching period, the hepatic mRNA level markedly increased at least 70-fold when compared to that before hatching. This increase was not observed in chicks receiving no diet. These changes were closely paralleled with the rise of the hepatic content of acetyl-CoA carboxylase protein in chicks up to 10 days old. Neither the acetyl-CoA carboxylase mRNA level nor the enzyme quantity significantly changed in heart. It is concluded from these results that the developmental regulation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase in the post-hatching period of chicks is tissue specific and occurs primarily at a pretranslational step. The content of acetyl-CoA carboxylase mRNA in adult chicken liver was low, which is comparable to those in embryos at 3 days before hatching and chicks at hatching day. Although acetyl-CoA carboxylase mRNA was detected in adult chicken brain, heart, lung, kidney, uropygial gland, spleen, testis, and chest muscle as well as liver, the mRNA level in these tissues was much lower than that in liver of growing chicks.  相似文献

The present study was performed on retinas of chick embryos receiving at day 8 of incubation an intracerebral injection of 0.02 microgram of corticosterone. We had previously shown with the use of [3H]quinuclidinylbenzilate [( 3H]QNB) that such treatment induced the appearance of two muscarinic binding sites in the treated retinas, whereas only one was detectable in the controls. In the present study we investigated muscarinic cholinergic receptor subclasses with agonist and antagonist binding. Agonist binding was studied by varying the concentrations of carbachol and acetylcholine (10(-9) M-10(-5) M) in the presence of a constant concentration (0.2 nM) of [3H]QNB. Two subpopulations of receptors were revealed, a high- and a low-affinity receptor, in both treated and control retinas. However, in the hormone-treated retinas, the two subpopulations significantly differed from the controls in their affinity and in their relative percentage among the total receptor population. Moreover, using pirenzepine, an antagonist known to have the capacity to distinguish between muscarinic cholinergic subclasses, two receptor subpopulations were found to be present in the hormone-treated retinas but a single one in the controls. It is suggested that hormone treatment can either induce the appearance of a new subclass of muscarinic cholinergic receptors or favor the maturation of a population of retinal cells having these receptors. Pirenzepine binding in retinas from intact embryos of 7, 9, and 11 days of incubation revealed one receptor subpopulation. Thus, these findings are more consistent with the hypothesis that corticosterone effects the target cells, either inducing changes in muscarinic receptor and/or modifying the receptor environment.  相似文献

Predation pressure acts on the behaviour and morphology of prey species. In fish, the degree of lateralization varies between high- and low-predation populations. While lateralization appears to be widespread in invertebrates, we do not know whether heredity and early experience interact during development as in vertebrates. Here we show, for the first time, that an exposure to predator odour prior to hatching modulates visual lateralization in newly hatched cuttlefish. Only cuttlefish that have been exposed to predator odour display a left-turning bias when tested with blank seawater in a T-shaped apparatus. Exposure to predator odour all the incubation long could appear as an acute predictor of a high-predation surrounding environment. In addition, cuttlefish of all groups display a left-turning preference when tested with predator odour in the apparatus. This suggests the ability of cuttlefish to innately recognize predator odour. To our knowledge, this is the first clear demonstration that lateralization is vulnerable to ecological challenges encountered during embryonic life, and that environmental stimulation of the embryo through the olfactory system could influence the development of subsequent visual lateralization.  相似文献

The great gerbil (Rhombomys opimus), a social rodent that lives in family groups, emits three different alarm vocalizations in the presence of predators: a rhythmic call; a faster more intense call; and a single whistle. We tested the hypothesis that the alarm calls communicate risk of predation. We quantified the relationship between predator distance and type of alarm call via human approaches to gerbils. We also tested responses of focal adults in family groups to playback broadcasts of the different calls and controls of bird song and tape noise. Results showed that alarm calls were related to distance from a predator. Gerbils gave the rhythmic call when the predator was farthest away, the more intense call as the predator moved closer; and a short whistle when startled by a close approach of the predator. Gerbils stopped feeding and stood vigilant in a frozen alert posture in response to playbacks of all three alarm calls. They decreased non‐vigilant behavior to the alarm vocalizations more than to the controls and decreased non‐vigilant behavior significantly more in response to the intense alarm and whistle compared with the rhythmic alarm. We conclude that one function of gerbil alarm calls is to communicate response urgency to family members. The rhythmic alarm communicates danger at a distance, whereas the intense alarm and whistle signal the close approach of a predator.  相似文献

The ontogeny of hepatic tissue growth and trace metal deposition was examined in the developing turkey embryo and newly hatched poult. Hepatic concentrations of zinc and iron in the embryo declined by about twofold between day 16 of incubation and hatching. Hepatic copper concentration increased approximately fourfold by day 23 of incubation and then declined rapidly through hatching. During the post-hatching period, hepatic zinc concentration increased twofold by day 10, whereas a small increase in hepatic iron concentration occurred just prior to hatching and continued through the third day post-hatching. A significant positive correlation existed between hepatic zinc and iron concentrations in the developing embryo. The concentrations of both these metals were inversely correlated with hepatic copper concentration during the same time. Total hepatic zinc and iron content increased throughout the entire time studied, whereas total copper content increased up to hatching and then declined during the first week post-hatching. The most rapid phase of hepatic metal accretion differed for each metal, with zinc being rapidly accumulated during the post-hatching period, copper during the last half of incubation and iron at about the time of hatching and the first few days post-hatching. Each of these metals demonstrated a specific relationship to hepatic tissue growth that changed between the embryonic and neonatal periods of development.  相似文献

Functional development of the adrenocorticotropic axis was inferred from plasma ACTH and corticosterone levels in intact and embryonically bursectomized (BFX) embryos and chicks from 8 days before to 56 days after hatch. Bursectomy was surgically made at 80 h of incubation and resulted in various alterations in developing adrenocorticotropic axis: ether stress-induced hormonal stimulation could be detected more precociously in BFX (day-6) than in intact embryos; the non stress-responsive period of newly hatched controls did not appear in BFX chicks; BFX young adult chicken exhibited quite smaller responses to stress than controls. In ovo injection of bursin (Lys-His-Gly-NH2) to 6- and 9-days old BFX embryos could restore normal adrenocorticotropic development provided convenient doses of tripeptide were used: administration of 100 fg or 100 pg of bursin was effective to restore normal hormonal levels at all stages studied whereas 100 micrograms was effective at embryonic stages only. The tripeptide Lys-His-Gly-NH2 is suggested as a possible signal from the immune B system directed at the hypothalamo-hypophysial-adrenocortical axis.  相似文献

The administration of either glucocorticoids (dexamethasone or corticosterone) or adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) to chicken embryos was followed by increase in the circulating concentration of triiodothyronine (T3), the T3 to thyroxine (T4) ratio and the activity of liver T4-5' monodeiodinase. No consistent changes in plasma concentrations of T4 or GH were observed. In post-hatching chicks, corticosterone and dexamethasone depressed the circulating concentrations of both T4 and T3. Iopanoc acid, an inhibitor of liver T4-5' monodeiodinase, elevated plasma concentrations of T4 and depressed those of T3 in both chicken embryos and young chicks. It is suggested that glucocorticoids affect circulating concentrations of T4 and T3 both by affecting the activity of the liver T4-5' monodeiodinase and by influencing the hypothalamo-pituitary axis.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to compare the effect of periodic cooling during the establishment of a functional pituitary-thyroid axis at days 11-14 of incubation and at other developmental stages, on the subsequent thyroid hormone response to thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH). In the first and second experiment chick embryos were cooled for 6 hr/day to 30 degrees C from day 11 till 14 and from day 15 till 18 respectively, whereas control groups were incubated throughout at 37.8 degrees C. In both experiments the thyroxine (T4) response upon TRH in 19 day-old embryos was higher in the previously cold treated embryos, according to the percentages of increase. However, the higher T4 response in the cold treated animals disappeared in 1 or 7 day-old chicks hatched from the 2nd experiment, but remained present in chicks of the same ages in the 1st experiment. In a third experiment the T4 response to TRH injection immediately and 3 and 8 days after a temperature treatment (25 degrees C or 12 degrees C) for one week on four weeks old broiler chickens was found to be similar in both temperature groups. In all experiments there was a concomitant triiodothyronine (T3) increase after TRH injection, but differences between experimental groups were observed at days 15 and 19 of incubation and immediately after the postnatal temperature treatment. As an overall conclusion the results indicate that cold treatment only during the establishment of the hypothalamo-hypophysial control of thyroid function can have a long lasting effect by enhancing the T4 response to TRH injection.  相似文献
