We examined the effect of self- and cross-pollination on germination success, flowering probability, pollen and ovule production, survivorship, and adult aboveground biomass in two species of Mimulus with contrasting mating systems: the highly seifing M. micranthus and an outcrossing population of M. guttatus. Cross-pollinations were performed both within and between populations in order to examine the scale at which the genetic load is distributed. We found significant inbreeding depression in M. guttatus in four of the six traits, with the highest inbreeding depression observed in biomass (68% and 69% based on within- and between-population crosses, respectively) and lowest in ovule production (21% based on between-population crosses only). M. micranthus displayed significant inbreeding depression in only two of the six traits examined. Again, we observed the highest inbreeding depression in biomass (47–60% based on within- and between-population crosses, respectively), but both traits showing significant differences between self and outcross progeny expressed lower inbreeding depression than in M. guttatus. We detected no significant inbreeding depression for either pollen or ovule production in M. micranthus. An estimate of total inbreeding depression based on the multiplicative effects of all traits was also lower in M. micanthus than∗∗∗ in M. guttatus. Our results are consistent with the expected purging of genetic load in populations with high selfing rates. The absence of inbreeding depression in M. micranthus pollen and ovule production, two traits with strong links to fitness in a selfing annual, further suggests the important role of directional selection in determining the population's genetic load. Comparison of cross-pollinations made within and between populations revealed little evidence of divergence of genetic load among the M. micranthus and M. guttatus populations examined.  相似文献

Previous studies have demonstrated genetic variation for resistance to insect herbivores and host plant quality. The effect of plant mating system, an important determinant of the distribution of genetic variation, on host plant characteristics has received almost no attention. This study used a controlled greenhouse experiment to examine the effect of self- and cross-pollination in Mimulus guttatus (Scrophulariaceae) on resistance to and host plant quality for the xylem-feeding spittlebug Philaenus spumarius (Homoptera: Cercopidae). Spittlebugs were found to have a negative effect on two important fitness components in M. guttatus, flower production and above ground biomass. One of two M. guttatus populations examined showed a significant interaction between the pollination and herbivore treatments. In this case, the detrimental effects of herbivores on biomass and flower production were much more pronounced in inbred (self) plants. The presence of spittlebug nymphs increased inbreeding depression by as much as three times. Pollination treatments also had significant effects on important components of herbivore fitness, but these effects were in opposite directions in our two host plant populations. Spittlebug nymphs maturing on self plants emerged as significantly larger adults in one of our host plant populations, indicating that inbreeding increased host plant quality. In our second host plant population, spittlebug nymphs took significantly longer to develop to adulthood on self plants, indicating that inbreeding decreased host plant quality. Taken together these results suggest that the degree of inbreeding in host plant populations can have important and perhaps complex effects on the dynamics of plant-herbivore interactions and on mating-system evolution in the host.  相似文献

Ribosomal DNA sequences for the ITS 1, 5.8S, ITS 2 and adjoining regions of the 18S and 25S were obtained from Mimulus glaucescens (Scrophulariaceae) via cloned PCR products. The spacer sequences were completely unrelated to other plant taxa, although spacer lengths were approximately the same. Interestingly, the Mimulus 5.8S sequence was much more divergent than other higher-plant rDNA sequences. Consideration of the secondary structure of the 5.8S rRNA shows that most of the changes in Mimulus are compensatory and preserve the basic secondary structure of the mature RNA molecule.  相似文献

The reserve meristem hypothesis predicts that latent meristems may act as a bet-hedging strategy given high-cost, predictable herbivory. Under this hypothesis, damage to a plant should elicit greater branching. This prediction was tested in Verbascum thapsus with three experiments manipulating the intensity and type of damage to reproductive tissue. In the first experiment, seed set was prevented in the treatment group by stigma excision and lanolin application to 80% of the flowers of each plant. In the second experiment, a minimum of two mating pairs of weevils were added to treated plants prior to the onset of flowering. In the third experiment, all fruits were sliced lengthwise twice. All three treatments significantly reduced seed set. In the first two experiments, treated plants significantly increased degree of branching (branch number and total branch length). This supports the reserve meristem hypothesis as an explanation for greater branching in larger plants of V. thapsus. Interestingly, the fruit destruction experiment failed to elicit a branching response, which suggests that the timing of damage is important.  相似文献

Ecological studies suggest that hummingbird-pollinated plants in North America mimic each other to increase visitation by birds. Published quantitative trait locus (QTL) data for two Mimulus species indicate that floral traits associated with hummingbird versus bee pollination results from a few loci with major effects on morphology, as predicted by classical models for the evolution of mimicry. Thus, the architecture of genetic divergence associated with speciation may depend on the ecological context.  相似文献

All‐female ‘species’ of fish have been shown to be great models in ecological and evolutionary studies because of the insights they can provide into the origin and evolution of asexuality, the ecology of hybrids, associations between genotype and environment, and the maintenance of sex. Gynogenetic organisms that evolved from sexual ancestors, and combine the disadvantageous traits from sexuality and asexuality, have long baffled evolutionary biologists trying to understand their origin and persistence with their sympatric sexual counterparts. In this issue, a new study using an integrated molecular phylogenetic and classical genetic approach has uncovered compelling evidence regarding the obscure asexual origin of the Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa. By performing an extensive phylogeographic analysis, Stöck et al. (2010) provide evidence that the Amazon molly arose only once within its history, with monophyly being strongly supported by mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite analyses. This result, combined with an elaborate failed attempt to resynthesize the lineage, suggests that vertebrate gynogens such as the Amazon molly are not rare because they are at a disadvantage to their sexual counterparts, but because the genomic conditions under which they arise are rare. Organisms that apparently combine the disadvantages of both sexuality and asexuality remain difficult to understand from both an ecological and an evolutionary perspective, and Stöck et al. (2010) highlight several outstanding important questions. Nonetheless, given that we now have a better knowledge of the origin and history of this unique ‘species’, this should allow researchers to better understand how these frozen F1’s can persist amidst the masterpiece of nature.  相似文献

Phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences of the chloroplast genes rcbL and ndhf revealed a highly supported clade composed of the families Plantaginaceae, Callitrichaceae, and Hippuridaceae in close association with the model organism Antirrhinum majus and other members of family Scrophulariaceae. Plantago has miniature actinomorphic wind-pollinated flowers that have evolved from zygomorphic animal-pollinated precursors. The aquatic Hippuridaceae have reduced windpollinated flowers with one reproductive organ per whorl, and three, rather than four, whorls. In monoecious aquatic Callitrichaceae, further reduction has occurred such that there is only one whorl per flower containing a single stamen or carpel. Optimization of character states showed that these families descended from an ancestor similar to Antirrhinum majus. Recent studies of plant developmental genetics have focused on distantly related species. Differences in the molecular mechanisms controlling floral development between model organisms are difficult to interpret due to phylogenetic distance. In order to understand evolutionary changes in floral morphology in terms of their underlying genetic processes, closely related species exhibiting morphological Variation should be examined. Studies of genes that regulate morphogenesis in the clade described here could aid in the elucidation of a general model tot such fundamental issues as how changes in floral symmetry, organ number, and whorl number are achieved, as well as providing insight on the evolution of dicliny and associated changes in pollination syndrome.  相似文献

According to the "effective pollination" hypothesis, tall stature resulting from strong apical dominance attracts greater pollinator visitation, thus allowing larger pollen loads and/or greater outcrossing rates, which in turn produces more vigorous offspring with greater genotypic variability and/or less inbreeding depression. Components of this hypothesis were tested in Verbascum thapsus, which commonly grows unbranched to over 2 m tall with strong apical dominance suppressing all axillary meristems. A natural population survey indicated that plants with visiting pollinators were significantly taller than their nearest neighboring individuals not possessing a visiting pollinator. Plants in natural populations with excluded pollinators produced seeds via a delayed selfing mechanism. However, delayed selfing under pollinator exclusion resulted in only 75% of the seed set obtained with natural pollinators. Under natural pollination, emasculated flowers experienced a 50% reduction in pollen deposition by the time of flower closure but only a 5% reduction in seed set relative to intact flowers. Hence, taller plants attracted more pollinators and maximum seed set could not be achieved without pollinators. Comparison of seed set and seed mass in plants that were artificially selfed and artificially crossed (in both the greenhouse and in natural populations) indicated that plants were fully self-compatible with no evidence of early-acting inbreeding depression. However, this does not exclude the possibility that inbreeding depression is manifested in later life stages. The results suggest that V. thapsus has a mixed mating system with potential for reproductive assurance and various levels of outcrossing depending on variables affecting pollinator availability (e.g., population size).  相似文献

Little is known about the biology of the East Asian freshwater crayfish of the genus Cambaroides. Furthermore, the phylogenetic relationships of Cambaroides are controversial. To gain more information about East Asian crayfish and to shed some light on the phylogeny and evolution of freshwater crayfish, some aspects of the embryonic and postembryonic development of the Japanese freshwater crayfish species Cambaroides japonicus are described. The general appearance of the embryo and the growth zone consisting of about 40 ectoteloblasts correspond with the apomorphic pattern described for all other freshwater crayfish species. The occurrence of eight mesoteloblasts is a typical malacostracan character. In addition to the occurrence of freshwater crayfish apomorphies, such as a telson thread, the postembryonic development of C. japonicus follows the ground pattern of the Northern Hemisphere Astacoidea. In particular, some characteristics are in common with the postembryonic development of the Astacidae. These concern the shape of the telson of the juvenile stage 1 and the occurrence of plumose telson setae in juvenile stage 2. Furthermore, the recurved hooks of the hatchlings are lost in the juvenile stage 2, indicating an early independence of the juveniles from the mother. On the other hand, the early appearance of a spermatheca (annulus ventralis) is shared between C. japonicus and the other (American) Cambaridae. The hypothesis is developed that the evolutionary success of the different freshwater crayfish taxa might be related to the stepwise extension of maternal care as an adaptation to the freshwater environment.  相似文献

Podostemaceae are unusual aquatic angiosperms adapting to extreme habitats, i.e., rapids and waterfalls, and have unique morphologies. We investigated the developmental anatomy of reproductive shoots scattered on crustose roots of Hydrobryum japonicum by scanning electron microscopy and using semi-thin serial sections. Two developmental patterns were observed: bracts arise either continuously from an area of meristematic cells that has produced leaves, or within differentiated root ground tissue beneath, and internal to, leaf base scars after an interruption. In both patterns, the bract primordia arise endogenously at the base of youngest bracts in the absence of shoot apical meristem, involving vacuolated-cell detachment to each bract separately. The different transition patterns of reproductive shoot development may be caused by different stages of parental vegetative shoots. The floral meristem arises between the two youngest bracts, and is similarly accompanied by cell degeneration. In contrast, the floral organs, including the spathella, arise exogenously from the meristem. Bract development, like vegetative leaf development, is unique to this podostemad, while floral-organ development is conserved.  相似文献

Abstract. A new mechanism of asexual multiplication of colonies is described in a colonial ascidian of the genus Clavelina (Aplousobranchiata). The mechanism consisted of the production of star-shaped buds that originate from a basal vessel that bends anteriorly and extends along the dorsal region of the zooids. Once they are well developed, the buds detached easily and were dispersed by water movement. Analysis of the fine structure of the buds revealed that they were a modification of the stolonic budding common in this genus. Time-lapse video recordings showed that released buds required several days to develop, allowing for a potentially significant dispersal range. The buds underwent organogenesis during which the central part gave rise to a new blastozooid with a defined polarity; the arms of the star gave rise to stolons. A new species is defined based on the presence of this type of budding and on other morphological features. The significance of these findings, which adds to the known mechanisms of asexual reproduction in ascidians, is discussed in relation to the biology and distribution of the species.  相似文献

Sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction by fission were studied in four populations of Coscinasterias calamaria (Gray), two in Otago Harbour in the South Island of New Zealand and two in the North Island near Auckland. The annual reproductive cycle in both islands of New Zealand is clearly defined with a spawning season between November and January. In both sites the pyloric caeca index was approximately inverse to the gonad index cycle as found in other forcipulate asteroids. There are substantial differences in the sex ratios of mature starfish at each site studied, with 1:1 ratios in two populations, one population heavily biased towards females and the fourth consisting almost entirely of males. Morphometric variation in arm number due to splitting was studied and the frequency of splitting varied considerably between the four populations. Generally speaking sublittoral C. calamaria divide less frequently than intertidal starfish and populations in which food is less abundant or of poorer quality are more fissiparous and put less energy into sexual reproduction, than populations with plentiful readily available food in the form of mussels. The significance of the different reproductive patterns in C. calamaria is discussed.  相似文献

The tribe Antirrhineae consists of 29 genera distributed in the New World and the Old. Phylogenetic analyses of ITS and ndhF sequences served to recognize six main lineages: Anarrhinum group (Anarrhinum, Kickxia); Linaria group (Linaria); Maurandya group (Cymbalaria, Asarina, Maurandella, Rhodochiton, Lophospermum); Schweinfurthia group (Pseudorontium, Schweinfurthia); Antirrhinum group (Antirrhinum, Pseudomisopates, Misopates, Acanthorrhinum, Howeliella, Neogarrhinum, Sairocarpus, Mohavea, Galvezia); Chaenorrhinum group (Chaenorrhinum, Albraunia, Holzneria). Parsimony (cladistics), distance-based (Neighbor-Joining), and Bayesian inference reveal that: (1) the tribe is a natural group; (2) genera such as Linaria, Schweinfurthia, Kickxia, and Antirrhinum also form natural groups; (3) three Antirrhineae lineages containing genera from the New and Old World are the result of three intercontinental disjunctions displaying similar levels of ITS-sequence divergence and differentiation times (Oligocene-Miocene); (4) evolution of flower shapes is not congruent with primitiveness of personate flowers; (5) both polyploidy and dysploidy appear to be responsible for most variation in chromosome number in the six main lineages. Nuclear and chloroplast evidence also supports the split of American and Mediterranean species of Antirrhinum into different genera, a result that should be contemplated in the interest of a more natural (monophyletic) taxonomy. Nucleotide additivity causes poor resolution in the ITS analysis of 22 species of Mediterranean Antirrhinum and lead us to interpret extensive hybridization in the Iberian Peninsula. This research was supported by the Spanish Dirección General de Investigación Científica y Técnica (DGICYT) through the project Flora Iberica (PS91-0070-C03-01). ABSTRACT

Background

Hybridisation associated with biological invasions may generate new phenotypic combinations, allowing hybrids to occupy new ecological niches. To date, few studies have assessed niche shifts associated with hybridisation in recently introduced populations while simultaneously characterising the niche of parental species in both native and introduced ranges.  相似文献

Although some species of Streptocarpus (Gesneriaceae) do not possess a layered shoot apical meristem (SAM), but three individual meristems, the basal meristem (BM), the petiolode meristem (PM) and the groove meristem (GM) on the petiolode from which additional phyllomorphs are formed. To gain insights into the processes involved, we examined the development of seedlings from germination to the formation of the primary phyllomorph in S. rexii, a rosulate species. Our specific focus was to examine the relationship between the functional activity of the GM and meristematic activity, which was assessed by a combined analysis of toluidine blue staining of histological sections and the incorporation of BrdU into meristematic tissues. The results were integrated into 3-D graphics, which suggests a complex spatial and temporal interaction within the GM. The significance of our observations is discussed and compared to the SAM observed in most other angiosperms.  相似文献

Abstract. Stimuli associated with copulatory behavior are often needed to maximize reproductive output in internally fertilized sexual taxa. Although non-pseudogamous parthenogenetic females have no need for sperm, parthenogens descended from sexual ancestors may still require copulatory stimuli to reach their full reproductive potential. Retention of physiological dependence on copulation in parthenogens could facilitate the maintenance of sexual reproduction in species where sexual and parthenogenetic individuals coexist if parthenogens do not receive enough copulatory stimuli to achieve maximal daughter production. A laboratory experiment was conducted to determine whether embryo production in parthenogenetic female snails ( Potamopyrgus antipodarum ) is dependent on male presence. Rather than male presence, this experiment showed that embryo production is affected by the number of coexisting parthenogens. Specifically, parthenogens housed with fewer other parthenogens produced significantly more embryos than parthenogens housed with a greater number of other parthenogens, regardless of male presence and total population size. This result indicates that copulatory dependence is not likely to contribute to the maintenance of sex in P. antipodarum . Instead, it demonstrates that females of P. antipodarum negatively affect each other's reproduction, and suggests that females of P. antipodarum may exert a larger competitive influence than males of P. antipodarum . Moreover, this finding raises the possibility that highly parthenogenetic and consequently female-dense populations of P. antipodarum may experience decreased reproductive output when population size is large and resources are limiting.  相似文献

Development of the frontoparietal bone in the European yellow-bellied toad, Bombina variegata, was followed on the basis of histological analysis of transverse serial sections through the larval skulls to recognize early stages of ossification represented by osteoid (uncalcified bone matrix) and on cleared and stained specimens to investigate more advanced stages. Ossification of the frontal begins as three tiny areas of osteoid (F(1), F(2), F(3)) adjoining the dorsal surface of the orbital cartilage, which are separated by areas without osteoid. F(3) is the largest (most advanced). Prior to calcification, F(3) extends to fuse with F(2) and then with F(1), but it does not expand over the prootic fissure posteriorly. As calcification begins the strip of bone is joined posteromedially by F(4). Only then does a single ossification center corresponding to the parietal arise on the anterodorsal surface of the otic capsule. This ossification sequence corresponds to those observed in the Actinopterygii and in caudate amphibians.  相似文献

The Stenogastrinae are a subfamily of the Vespidae. The main difference between these and other social wasps (Polistinae and Vespinae) is a jelly-like substance that the Stenogastrinae secrete from the Dufour 's gland and use in many functions of their biology. It is suggested that this substance greatly contributed to the evolution of social life in these wasps by making it possible to nourish the brood with liquid food and store it in the nest, thus favoring also the evolution of the behavioral mechanisms which facilitated interactions between adults. Social organization of the colonies may have been kept at a low level through a basic system of continuous temporary helper replacement, while the evolution of large colonies was restrained, as well as by the poor quality of construction material, low egg-laying capacity and limited production of abdominal substance, imperfect social regulatory mechanisms, and the absence of defensive mechanisms of the colonies against large predators.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Successful cryopreservation of bryophytes is linked to intrinsic desiccation tolerance and survival can be enhanced by pre-treatment with abscisic acid (ABA) and sucrose. The pioneer moss Ditrichum plumbicola is naturally subjected to desiccation in the field but showed unexpectedly low survival of cryopreservation, as well as a poor response to pre-treatment. The effects of the cryopreservation protocol on protonemata of D. plumbicola were investigated in order to explore possible relationships between the production in vitro of cryopreservation-tolerant asexual propagules and the reproductive biology of D. plumbicola in nature. METHODS: Protonemata were prepared for cryopreservation using a four-step protocol involving encapsulation in sodium alginate, pre-treatment for 2 weeks with ABA and sucrose, desiccation for 6 h and rapid freezing in liquid nitrogen. After each stage, protonemata were prepared for light and electron microscopy and growth on standard medium was monitored. Further samples were prepared for light and electron microscopy at intervals over a 24-h period following removal from liquid nitrogen and re-hydration. KEY RESULTS: Pre-treatment with ABA and sucrose caused dramatic changes to the protonemata. Growth was arrested and propagules induced with pronounced morphological and cytological changes. Most cells died, but those that survived were characterized by thick, deeply pigmented walls, numerous small vacuoles and lipid droplets in their cytoplasm. Desiccation and cryopreservation elicited no dramatic cytological changes. Cells returned to their pre-dehydration and cryopreservation state within 2 h of re-hydration and/or removal from liquid nitrogen. Regeneration was normal once the ABA/sucrose stimulus was removed. CONCLUSIONS: The ABA/sucrose pre-treatment induced the formation of highly desiccation- and cryopreservation-tolerant propagules from the protonemata of D. plumbicola. This parallels behaviour in the wild, where highly desiccation-tolerant rhizoids function as perennating organs allowing the moss to endure extreme environmental conditions. An involvement of endogenous ABA in the desiccation tolerance of D. plumbicola is suggested.  相似文献

The reproductive ecology of Euphrasia willkommii (Scrophulariaceae), an endemic species from the Mediterranean alpine environments of the SE Spain, has been experimentally studied during two reproductive seasons. The flowers of this plant species were visited by very few insects belonging only to two generalist taxa, thrips and ants. Nevertheless, reproduction is not pollen limited in E. willkommii. Hand-pollinations demonstrated that this plant species is capable of selfing, reproductive success being similar in autogamous and allogamous crosses. Moreover, pollinator-exclusion experiments also showed that, under natural conditions, this plant relies predominantly on selfing, seed production being similar in presence or absence of pollinators. Selfing in E. willkommii is presumably an ecological mechanism to ensure successful reproduction in a harsh environment where pollinator availability is extremely low.
