The diversity and abundance of ichthyofauna associated with Thalassia testudinum in the Lobos coral reef, Veracruz, Mexico, were studied in September and October 2002. Thirty six visual censuses in four sample sites were made using a 50 x 2 m transect belt. On each census, fish species, abundance and size were recorded. Leaf size and cover of T. testudinum were estimated. The similarity of fish groups was calculated with the Gower coefficient. The most abundant coral reef fishes were: Scarus iseri, Halichoeres bivittatus, Sparisoma radians, Stegastes adustus and Stegastes leucostictus. The highest density (0.04078 ind/m2) and biomass (0.72408 g/m2) of fish species were recorded in site II, where leaf size was greater (30.8 cm). The analysis of variance showed significant differences between sites in leaf size (F = 18.30856; p = 0.00001) and cover (H = 33.8119; p = 0.00001). These differences suggest a relationship between fish diversity and abundance, and T. testudinum leaf size and cover. The Gower similarity index produced two groups of fishes; one of them (site II) showed the highest abundance. In this reef, the fishes associated to sea grasses seem to reflect the characteristics of T. testudinum. 相似文献

Diatom assemblages in sandy deposits of the 2004 tsunami at Phra Thong Island, Thailand may provide clues to flow conditions during the tsunami. The tsunami deposits contain one or more beds that fine upward, commonly from medium sand to silty very fine sand. Diatom assemblages of the lowermost portion of the deposit predominantly comprise unbroken beach and subtidal species that live attached to sand grains. The dominant taxa shift to marine plankton species in the middle of the bed and to a mix of freshwater, brackish, and marine species near the top. These trends are consistent with expected changes in current velocities of tsunami through time. During high current velocities, medium sand is deposited; only beach and subtidal benthic diatoms attached to sediment can be incorporated into the tsunami deposit. High shear velocity keeps finer material, including planktonic diatoms in suspension. With decreasing current velocities, finer material including marine plankton can be deposited. Finally, during the lull between tsunami waves, the entrained freshwater, brackish, and marine species settle out with mud and plant trash. Low numbers of broken diatoms in the lower medium sand implies rapid entrainment and deposition, whilst selective breakage of marine plankton (Thalassionema nitzschioides, and Thalassiosira and Coscinodiscus spp.) in the middle portion of the deposit probably results from abrasion in the turbulent current before deposition. 相似文献

Interactions between predators and their prey are influenced by the habitat they occupy. Using created oyster (Crassostrea virginica) reef mesocosms, we conducted a series of laboratory experiments that created structure and manipulated complexity as well as prey density and "predator-free space" to examine the relationship between structural complexity and prey survivorship. Specifically, volume and spatial arrangement of oysters as well as prey density were manipulated, and the survivorship of prey (grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio) in the presence of a predator (wild red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus) was quantified. We found that the presence of structure increased prey survivorship, and that increasing complexity of this structure further increased survivorship, but only to a point. This agrees with the theory that structural complexity may influence predator-prey dynamics, but that a threshold exists with diminishing returns. These results held true even when prey density was scaled to structural complexity, or the amount of "predator-free space" was manipulated within our created reef mesocosms. The presence of structure and its complexity (oyster shell volume) were more important in facilitating prey survivorship than perceived refugia or density-dependent prey effects. A more accurate indicator of refugia might require "predator-free space" measures that also account for the available area within the structure itself (i.e., volume) and not just on the surface of a structure. Creating experiments that better mimic natural conditions and test a wider range of "predator-free space" are suggested to better understand the role of structural complexity in oyster reefs and other complex habitats. 相似文献

Using 6 years of observational and experimental data, we examined the hypothesis that water and nutrient stress increase
the susceptibility of pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) to the stem- and cone-boring moth (Dioryctria albovittella). At two geographic levels, a local scale of 550 km2 and a regional scale of 10,000 km2, moth herbivory was strongly correlated with an edaphic stress gradient. At a local scale, from the cinder soils of Sunset
Crater to nearby sandy-loam soils, nine of ten soil macro- and micronutrients, and soil water content were lowest in cinder-dominated
soils. Herbivore damage was six times greater on trees growing in the most water and nutrient deficient site at Sunset Crater
compared to sites with well-developed soils. Percentage silt-clay content of soil, which was highly positively correlated
with soil nutrient and soil moisture at a local scale, accounted for 56% of the variation in herbivory at a regional scale
among 22 sites. Within and across sites, increased stem resin flow was positively associated with reduced moth attack. On
the basis of moth distribution across a stress gradient, we predicted that pinyons growing in highly stressful environments
would show increased resistance to herbivores if supplemented with water and/or nutrients. We conducted a 6-year experiment
at a high-stress site where individual trees received water only, fertilizer only, and water + fertilizer. Relative to control
trees, stem growth and resin flow increased in all three treatments, but only significantly in the water + fertilizer treatment.
Although there was no significant difference in herbivore damage among these three treatments, there was an overall reduction
in herbivore damage on all treatment trees combined, compared to control trees. This experiment suggests that release from
stress leads to increased resistance to insect attack and is consistent with our observational data. While other studies have
predicted that short-term stress will result in herbivore outbreaks, our studies extend this prediction to chronically stressed
host populations. Finally, while flush-feeders are not predicted to respond positively to stressed host plants, we found a
positive association between herbivore attack and stressed pinyon populations.

This study compares the red blood cell (Rbc) levels of lead (Pb), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) in relation to blood pressure
in 39 pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy. The study population included 20 women with normal pregnancies,
15 with mild hypertension, and 4 with severe hypertension and preeclampsia. The mean±SD for each group was calculated and
the difference between the means of the normotensive and the other groups were compared by analysis of variance. Significant
differences from normal to the preeclamptic pregnancies were in (1) elevated Rbc Pb (p≤0.001), (2) lower Rbc Ca (p≤0.001), and (3) lower Rbc Mg/Pb ratio (p≤0.0001). Pearson’s rank correlation between blood pressure showed a direct relation to the Rbc Pb level (p≤0.01) and an inverse relation to the Rbc Ca and Mg/Pb ratio (p≤0.004,≤0.007). Apparently, prenatal blood pressure is directly proportional to Rbc Pb content and related or modified by

The species composition and relative abundance of the annelid benthic macrofauna (Polychaeta and Oligochaeta) inhabiting the
rocky intertidal zone of the ria of Ferrol (Galicia, NW Spain) were studied during field collections, from 2000 to 2002. A
total of 14,619 specimens (11,585 polychaetes belonging to 76 species and 24 families and 3,034 oligochaetes belonging to
18 species and two families) were collected from 98 quantitative samples taken from 13 sampling sites. The general spatial
distribution of the annelid fauna reflects an increase of the diversity from the inner to the outer part of the ria. The general
patterns found in the annelid composition suggest that the assemblages were dominated by oligochaetes in the inner sheltered
sampling sites and polychaetes in the outer more exposed sites. Several faunistical and taxonomical remarks on selected species
are presented. Two new species of oligochaetes are described: Coralliodrilus artabrensis sp. n. and Pirodrilus fungithecatus sp. n. (Naididae, Phallodrilinae). A new biological index, based on the oligochaete/polychaete ratio (O/P), is proposed as
tool to evaluate environmental quality and to monitor future changes in the environment. 相似文献

Measurement of plasma progesterone, LH and FSH were made every 6 h during the first 6 days of pregnancy in the mouse. Plasma progesterone and LH were low on day 1, minimum values being recorded at 24 h post coitus. Concentrations of both these hormones started rising during the second half on day 2 with the rise continuing during day 3 to a progesterone peak of 25 ng/ml early on day 4 and an LH peak of 37 ng/ml late on day 4. Levels of progesterone fell during day 4 and LH during day 5 to approximately half their respective peak values and then remained relatively constant over the remainder of the measurement period. Levels of FSH, which were high early on day 1 (180 ng/ml), fell sharply by midday with a small rise late in the day followed by a decline during day 2 to a minimum level of 2 ng/ml at 48 h post coitus. Early on day 3 FSH values rose to 120 ng/ml then fell to 50-60 ng/ml during the next 6 h and remained relatively stable at this level during days 4 and 5. It is suggested that LH is concerned with progesterone production and maintenance of the corpus luteum whilst FSH is concerned with the production of oestrogen required for implantation in this species. 相似文献

AIMS: To characterize the phylogenetic composition of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) of the beta-subclass of the class Proteobacteria in intertidal sediment and rocky biofilms of the Douro estuary, and evaluate relationships with environmental variables and N-biogeochemistry. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cluster analysis of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis profiles showed differences in beta-Proteobacteria AOB assemblage composition between rocky biofilms and sediments. All sequences obtained from intertidal rocky biofilm sites exhibited phylogenetic affinity to Nitrosomonas sp. lineages, whereas a majority of the sequences from the sediment sites were most similar to marine Nitrosospira cluster 1. Hierarchical cluster analysis based on environmental variables identified two main groups of samples. The first contained samples from rocky biofilm sites characterized by high concentrations of NO2- and NH4+, and high organic matter and chlorophyll a content. The second group contained all of the sediment samples; these sites were characterized by lower values for the variables above. In addition, rocky biofilm sites exhibited higher nitrification rates. CONCLUSIONS: Intersite differences in environmental and/or physical conditions led to the selection of different populations of beta-Proteobacteria AOB, supporting different magnitudes of N-cycling regimes. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study represents an important step in establishing the influence of environmental factors on the distribution of beta-Proteobacteria AOB with possible consequences for N-biogeochemistry. 相似文献

目的:探讨子宫内膜异位症患者血清血管内皮生长因子(VEGF)和C-反应蛋白(CRP)的水平变化及其相关性。方法:采用ELISA的方法测定30例III~Ⅳ期子宫内膜异位症患者(其中增生期13例、分泌期17例)和22例非子宫内膜异位症患者(其中增生期10例、分泌期12例)血清VEGF和CRP的水平,并分析两者相关性。结果:子宫内膜异位症组分泌期血清VEGF水平明显高于对照组(P〈0.05);子宫内膜异位症组增生期血清CRP水平明显高于对照组(P〈0.05);子宫内膜异位症组增生期和分泌期血清VEGF与CRP水平存在显著的正相关(F0.52,P〈0.05;r=0.44,P〈0.05)。结论:子宫内膜异位症患者血清VEGF、CRP水平的升高说明了过度血管生成和异常炎症反应是子宫内膜异位症的显著特征。 相似文献

Exposure of plasma membranes isolated from high density resting murine B cells to recombinant IL-4 in the presence of gamma-[32P]-ATP promoted phosphorylation of a protein of Mr = 42,000. The 42 Kd protein kinase substrate could be detected in membranes prepared from low density B cells following a 24 h culture with lipopolysaccharide, but not in membranes prepared from B cells exposed to LPS for 48 h. Treatment of the cells with LPS resulted in the appearance of a number of new membrane-associated phosphoproteins. Treatment with the cytokine also resulted in the disappearance of a protein kinase substrate of Mr = 30,000 from phosphoprotein profiles of membranes prepared from cells exposed to LPS for 24 h. The 42 Kd structure appears to be a protein kinase substrate rather than possessing intrinsic phosphotransferase activity as judged from experiments employing 8-azido-gamma-[32P]-ATP as a photoaffinity label. No 42 Kd species was detectable using this reagent. Experiments employing identical protocols failed to reveal any enhanced or diminished phosphorylation of membrane-associated proteins in human peripheral blood B cells or in human B lymphoma cell lines. 相似文献

Elevated VEGF levels has been reported in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF), but the reasons for its higher level in renal insufficiency remain unknown. We assessed VEGF, SOX markers: total peroxide, Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD), the levels of autoantibodies against oxidized LDL (OxLDL-Ab), and inflammation markers: high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs CRP), interleukine-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) in 55 CRF patients and 18 controls. The patients with CRF showed a significant increase in plasma levels of VEGF, markers of inflammation, total peroxide and Cu/Zn SOD levels compared with controls. The strong positive associations were between VEGF and creatinine, urea, phosphate and CaxP product (all p<0.0001), Cu/Zn SOD (p<0.001) and hs CRP levels (p<0.01). VEGF showed a strong inverse relationship with eGFR (p<0.0001). In multiple regression analysis increased Cu/Zn SOD, phosphate and creatinine levels were found to be independent factors affecting VEGF. This study documented significant elevation in plasma values of VEGF in patients with CRF, which appears early during the progression of renal insufficiency. Increased oxidative stress, phosphate levels and impaired elimination by kidney were the main factors affecting the plasma levels of this growth factor in CRF patients. 相似文献

We analyzed polymorphism in the parental lines GK26 and Mo17 and testers Od221MV, Od308MV, and Od329 using SSR-analysis. Recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from populations F4 and F6 were genotyped at ten polymorphic loci. Allelic compositions and allele frequencies at microsatellite loci were investigated in parental lines and testers, and the best highly heterotic hybrids and their molecular genetic formulae were derived.
