OBJECTIVE: The present study was aimed to assess the effects of subclinical hypothyroidism on body composition (BC). SUBJECTS: Thirty-one women (age: 37 +/- 9.9 years) with a wide range of body mass index (BMI) were studied. Subclinical hypothyroidism was defined by a basal TSH > or = 4 mU/L and/or TRH stimulated peak > or = 30 mU/L. MEASUREMENTS: For each subject, weight, height, BMI, multifrequency bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy (BIS) and D2O and NaBr dilution tests were performed to assessed total body water (TBW) and extracellular water (ECW). Thyroid function (basal and TRH stimulated TSH, free T3, and free T4) were determined from fasting blood samples for all subjects. Total body dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were used to measure fat mass (FM) and lean mass (Lean). RESULTS: The results of BIS were compared with the TBW and ECW estimated by the dilution techniques on the same individuals. The correlation was R2 = 0.65 for impedance at 5 kHz and ECW by NaBr and R2 = 0.72 for impedance at 100 kHz and TBW by D2O. Intracellular water (ICW) was calculated as differences between TBW and ECW measured by dilution methods. Percent of ECW and ICW were related to BMI (ANOVA, p < 0.001). No difference in TBW, body water distribution and body composition related to thyroid function was demonstrated. CONCLUSIONS: In our patients affected with subclinical hypothyroidism, with or without obesity, only obesity appeared related to TBW, ECW and ICW; the subclinical hypothyroidism, on the contrary, had no effect on compartments of body fluids. Bioimpedance is a valid tool to assess body fluid distribution in subclinical hypothyroidism.  相似文献

This review presents experimental data on the perinatal significance of the recently developed concept of physical water compartments. This concept implies that in addition to the compartmentalization of body water into the intra- and extracellular spaces, motionally distinct water fractions - designated as physical water compartments - are also of importance in the neonatal body fluid redistribution. H(1)-NMR spectroscopy provides a quantitative estimate of tissue water fractions with different mobility as multicomponent analysis of the T(2) relaxation decay curves allows us to determine the fast and slow relaxing components of the curves corresponding to the bound and free fractions of tissue water. Using this method, free and bound water fractions were measured in fetal and neonatal rabbit tissues (skin, skeletal muscle, liver, brain, lung) at different stages of maturity and under conditions of various fluid intake. It has been demonstrated that water mobility in individual fetal/neonatal tissues varies greatly and there is a general tendency of increasing free water at the expense of bound water fraction with progressing maturation. This tendency appears to be accelerated in the immediate postnatal period when the tissue water content is markedly reduced. The importance of hyaluronan in this process has also been addressed as the hyaluronan content is markedly elevated in the fetal/neonatal tissues and due to its polyanionic, hydrophilic nature it has been claimed to play a prominent but not clearly defined role in the control of tissue hydration.  相似文献

Neuromechanics: an integrative approach for understanding motor control   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Neuromechanics seeks to understand how muscles, sense organs, motor pattern generators, and brain interact to produce coordinatedmovement, not only in complex terrain but also when confrontedwith unexpected perturbations. Applications of neuromechanicsinclude ameliorating human health problems (including prosthesisdesign and restoration of movement following brain or spinalcord injury), as well as the design, actuation and control ofmobile robots. In animals, coordinated movement emerges fromthe interplay among descending output from the central nervoussystem, sensory input from body and environment, muscle dynamics, and the emergent dynamics of the whole animal. The inevitablecoupling between neural information processing and the emergentmechanical behavior of animals is a central theme of neuromechanics.Fundamentally, motor control involves a series of transformationsof information, from brain and spinal cord to muscles to body, and back to brain. The control problem revolves around the specifictransfer functions that describe each transformation. The transferfunctions depend on the rules of organization and operationthat determine the dynamic behavior of each subsystem (i.e.,central processing, force generation, emergent dynamics, andsensory processing). In this review, we (1) consider the contributionsof muscles, (2) sensory processing, and (3) central networksto motor control, (4) provide examples to illustrate the interplayamong brain, muscles, sense organs and the environment in thecontrol of movement, and (5) describe advances in both roboticsand neuromechanics that have emerged from application of biologicalprinciples in robotic design. Taken together, these studiesdemonstrate that (1) intrinsic properties of muscle contributeto dynamic stability and control of movement, particularly immediatelyafter perturbations; (2) proprioceptive feedback reinforcesthese intrinsic self-stabilizing properties of muscle; (3) controlsystems must contend with inevitable time delays that can simplifyor complicate control; and (4) like most animals under a varietyof circumstances, some robots use a trial and error processto tune central feedforward control to emergent body dynamics.  相似文献

Soil is one of the most biodiverse terrestrial habitats. Yet, we lack an integrative conceptual framework for understanding the patterns and mechanisms driving soil biodiversity. One of the underlying reasons for our poor understanding of soil biodiversity patterns relates to whether key biodiversity theories (historically developed for aboveground and aquatic organisms) are applicable to patterns of soil biodiversity. Here, we present a systematic literature review to investigate whether and how key biodiversity theories (species–energy relationship, theory of island biogeography, metacommunity theory, niche theory and neutral theory) can explain observed patterns of soil biodiversity. We then discuss two spatial compartments nested within soil at which biodiversity theories can be applied to acknowledge the scale‐dependent nature of soil biodiversity.  相似文献

Orexins, which were initially identified as endogenous peptide ligands for two orphan G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), have been shown to have an important role in the regulation of energy homeostasis. Furthermore, the discovery of orexin deficiency in narcolepsy patients indicated that orexins are highly important factors for the sleep/wakefulness regulation. The efferent and afferent systems of orexin-producing neurons suggest interactions between these cells and arousal centers in the brainstem as well as important feeding centers in the hypothalamus. Electrophysiological studies have shown that orexin neurons are regulated by humoral factors, including leptin, glucose, and ghrelin as well as monoamines and acetylcholin. Thus, orexin neurons have functional interactions with hypothalamic feeding pathways and monoaminergic/cholinergic centers to provide a link between peripheral energy balance and the CNS mechanisms that coordinate sleep/wakefulness states and motivated behavior such as food seeking.  相似文献

Studies were carried out in 29 healthy young adults in the Indian Army stationed in the plains and posted at an elevation of 3500 m for more than 6 months. After exposure to a low elevation in Delhi (260 m) for 3 weeks they were reinduced to a height of 3500 m. The subjects were divided into three groups, each of which was treated with either placebo or acetazolamide or spironolactone. The drug treatment was started immediately after their landing at high altitude and continued for 2 days only. Total body water, extracellular fluid, intracellular fluid, plasma volume, blood pH, PaO2, PaCO2 and blood viscosity were determined on exposure at Delhi and on re-induction to high altitude. Plasma volume was increased after the descent from high altitude and remained high for up to 21 day's study. This increased plasma volume may have some significance in the pathogenesis of pulmonary oedema. Total body water and intracellular fluid content were increased at 260 m elevation, while extracellular fluid decreased. On re-induction there was a decrease in total body water with no change in the extracellular fluid content. This paper was presented in part at the 17th annual conference of the Society of Nuclear Medicine, India held at Bangalore, January 2–4, 1986  相似文献

Studies were conducted on 29 male healthy subjects having no previous experience of living at high altitude. These subjects were divided into three groups, i.e., subjects treated with placebo, acetazolamide and spironolactone. These subjects were first studied in Delhi. The drug schedule was started 24 hour prior to the airlift of these subjects to an altitude of 3,500 m and was continued for 48 hour after arrival at high altitude. Total body water, extra cellular water, plasma volume, blood electrolytes, pH, pO2, pCO2 and blood viscosity were determined on 3rd and 12th day of their stay at high altitude. Total body water, extra cellular water intracellular water and plasma volume decreased on high altitude exposure. There was a further slight decrease in these compartments with acetazolamide and spironolactone. It was also observed that spironolactone drives out more water from the extracellular compartment. Loss of plasma water was also confirmed by increased plasma osmolality. Increase in arterial blood pH was noticed on hypoxic exposure but the increase was found less in acetazolamide and spironolactone cases. This decrease in pH is expected to result in better oxygen delivery to the tissues at the low oxygen tension. It was also confirmed because blood pO2 increased in both the groups. No significant change in plasma electrolytes was observed in subjects of various groups. Blood viscosity slightly increased on exposure to high altitude. The degree of rise was found less in the group treated with spironolactone. This study suggests that both the drugs are likely to be beneficial in ameliorating/prevention of AMS syndrome.  相似文献

Total content of water, extracellular space (ES), Na+, K+, and Cl in the isolated chick retina were measured in the presence (test) or absence (control) of spreading depression (SD). During SD in medium with 0.5 mM or 2 mM MgSO4, there is an increase in the intracellular concentration of Na+ and Cl and a decrease in the intracellular concentration of K+. A decrease in the ES was only found in the medium with 2 mM MgSO4 together with a diminshed outmovement of K+. We suggest that a decrease in the ES is due to an increased absorption of K+ by the Muller cells, causing its swelling and consequently a decrease of the ES.The addition of sucrose (17 mM) to the incubation medium as the extracellular marker markedly decreased the intracellular concentration of Cl in control retinas, blocked the inward movement of this ion to the tissue during SD and also changed the K+ movement during the phenomenon in medium with 2 mM MgSO4. We suggest that Cl is an important ion in the ionic balance of the Muller cells and that sucrose must have its site of action that these cells.  相似文献

We have developed Quantitative Circulatory Physiology (QCP), a mathematical model of integrative human physiology containing over 4,000 variables of biological interactions. This model provides a teaching environment that mimics clinical problems encountered in the practice of medicine. The model structure is based on documented physiological responses within peer-reviewed literature and serves as a dynamic compendium of physiological knowledge. The model is solved using a desktop, Windows-based program, allowing students to calculate time-dependent solutions and interactively alter over 750 parameters that modify physiological function. The model can be used to understand proposed mechanisms of physiological function and the interactions among physiological variables that may not be otherwise intuitively evident. In addition to open-ended or unstructured simulations, we have developed 30 physiological simulations, including heart failure, anemia, diabetes, and hemorrhage. Additional stimulations include 29 patients in which students are challenged to diagnose the pathophysiology based on their understanding of integrative physiology. In summary, QCP allows students to examine, integrate, and understand a host of physiological factors without causing harm to patients. This model is available as a free download for Windows computers at http://physiology.umc.edu/themodelingworkshop.  相似文献

Summary Toads (Bufo viridis) were kept on soil without access to free water (simulated terrestrial conditions) for over 12 weeks. Body water compartments were estimated using the dilution method (inulin and Evans Blue). They were found to remain fairly constant after a period of adjustment which lasted 1–2 weeks. In particular, plasma volume was closely controlled. Plasma osmolarity increased to over 1000 mOsm · 1–1 accompanying a large increase in its urea concentration. NaCl also increased, while potassium remained constant. Tissue (liver and skeletal muscle) water content did not change much and electrolytes were kept constant. Tissue water urea concentration seemed to equilibrate with that of the plasma. Urine osmolarity, which was hypotonic during water access, became nearly isosmotic and correlated with the plasma following transfer onto soil. Urine urea concentration correlated with the plasma in the terrestrial conditions, potassium was greatly elevated, sodium increased to some extent, and chloride hardly changed. The efficient osmoregulatory mechanisms for the control of distribution of body water sustain normal physiological functions.  相似文献

The placenta is an indispensable organ for intrauterine protection, development and growth of the embryo and fetus. It provides tight contact between mother and conceptus, enabling the exchange of gas, nutrients and waste products. The human placenta is discoidal in shape, and bears a hemo-monochorial interface as well as villous materno-fetal interdigitations. Since Peter Medawar's astonishment to the paradoxical nature of the mother–fetus relationship in 1953, substantial knowledge in the domain of placental physiology has been gathered. In the present essay, an attempt has been made to build an integrated understanding of morphological dynamics, cell biology, and functional aspects of genomic and proteomic expression of human early placental villous trophoblast cells followed by a commentary on the future directions of research in this field.  相似文献

The nutritional status of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr was assessed by examining how proximate body composition and energy content (kJ g−1) were associated with the habitat rearing origin of parr utilizing fluvial or lacustrine areas. Comparisons were made among sampling sites within the two habitats, as well as between the two major habitat types applying both fixed effect and random effect models. Mean protein concentration varied from 13·87 to 15·67% among fluvial sites, and from 14·96 to 16·38% among lacustrine sampling locations. Mean fat concentration ranged from 1·71 to 3·32% and from 2·22 to 4·29% among fluvial and lacustrine locations, respectively, with energy concentration, on average, c . 11% higher in lacustrine parr. Interpretation of results of comparisons between habitats was dependent upon the statistical model used. Benefits associated with lacustrine rearing, such as greater body size and nutritional status, have implications for overwintering survival in fresh water as well as subsequent survival during initial sea entrance as smolts.  相似文献
