Cytokinesis in bacteria is mediated by a macromolecular machine known as the divisome, consisting of an assembly of FtsZ polymers around the cylindrical axis of the cell and the downstream regulators of division that are subsequently recruited to it. FtsZ polymerizes into filaments in a GTP-dependent manner, similarly to its eukaryotic structural homolog tubulin. The initial placement of the FtsZ polymerization site is tightly regulated by multiple mechanisms, as are the subsequent polymer reshaping and force generation that separate the two daughter cells from each other. New factors have been recently discovered that contribute to this regulation, notably affecting FtsZ polymer shaping, and modulating FtsZ polymerization in response to the metabolic or redox state of the cell.  相似文献

The morphology and function of the flowers of three species of the genusCallicarpa, C. glabra, C. nisnimurae andC. subpubescens, endemic to the Bonin Islands, revealed that all three species were dioecious. Male plants had short-styled flowers with sterile ovaries, while female plants had long-styled flowers with non-germinating inaperturate pollen grains. Such dioecism has never been reported from the family Verbenaceae. This curious sexual system with non-germinating pollen grains may have been maintained as a reward to insect pollinators.  相似文献

Wang鉴定为C.brachiata Thunb.,也将后者作为C.orientalis L.的亚种处理;(d)将C.ibarensis Baker(具一回羽状复叶和两性花)这一拉丁学名用在了另一特产马达加斯加具2~3回羽状复叶和单性花、应属于单性铁线莲组sect. Aspidanthera的种(C.rutoides W.T.Wang)之上;(e)将另一特产马达加斯加具一回羽状复叶和单性花、 也属于单性铁线莲组的C.edentata Baker(=C.insidiosa Baill.)降级作为这两位学者曲解的C.ibarensis Baker的亚种处理;(f)将特产马达加斯加的C.dissecta Baker归并到属于茴芹叶铁线莲组(sect. The means employed for immunoglobulin heavy chain class switch appears to be no different from that by which meiotic intergenic crossing-overs at accomplished. As with other intergenic spacers, the 5' noncoding sequence of each Ig CH (immunoglobulin heavy chain constant region) gene apparently undergoes unconstrained sequence changes due to randomly sustained base substitutions, deletions, and duplications. Yet, there remains sufficient regional sequence homology between the Ig Cmu 5' noncoding sequence and those of its somatic recombination partners, e.g., Ig C gamma 1, Ig C gamma 2b, Ig C alpha, because each of these 5' noncoding sequences is made of multiple copies in various stages of degeneracy of one primordial 20 base pair-long sequence: (AGCTG) (AGCTG) (AGCTG) (GGGTG).  相似文献

The I domain present within the alpha2 chain of the integrin alpha(2)beta(1) (GPIa/IIa) contains the principal collagen-binding site. Based on the crystal structure of the alpha2-I domain, a hypothetical model was proposed in which collagen binds to a groove on the upper surface of the I domain (Emsley, J., King, S. L., Bergelson, J. M., and Liddington, R. C. (1997) J. Biol. Chem. 272, 28512-28517). We have introduced point mutations into 13 residues on the upper surface of the domain. Recombinant mutant proteins were assayed for binding to monoclonal antibodies 6F1 and 12F1, to collagen under static conditions, and for the ability to retain adhesive activity under flow conditions. The mutations to residues surrounding the metal ion-dependent adhesion site that caused the greatest loss of collagen binding under both static and flow conditions are N154S in the betaA-alpha1 turn, N190D in the betaB-betaC turn, D219R in the alpha3-alpha4 turn, and E256V and H258V in the betaD-alpha5 turn. Mutation in one of the residues that coordinate the metal binding, S155A, completely lost the adhesive activity under flow but bound normally under static conditions, whereas the mutation Y285F had the converse effect. We conclude that the upper surface of the domain, including the metal ion-dependent adhesion site motif, defines the collagen recognition site.  相似文献

Mapping of catecholaminergic (CAergic) neurons in the nervous system has been performed in 5 species of turbellarians of the order Neorhabdocoela: in three species of typhloplanides, Mesostoma lingua, Bothromesostoma essenii, and Rhynchomesostoma rostratum, and in two species of Dalyellioida, Castrella truncata and Gieysztoria cuspidata. In spite of an essential diversity of their orthogones, the number of cerebral neurons varies insignificantly: from 4 to 5 pairs at 3 variants of geometry of their arrangement. In the presence of the medial paddle-shaped outgrowth of neuropil, two pairs of anterior cerebral neurons are located on its both sides, while 2 pairs of posterior neurons, in the inferior lateral regions of neuropil. The absence of the medial outgrowth and a stretching of neuropil provided a fan-shaped arrangement of cerebral neurons behind the eyes and on the sides of the pharynx. The three-store arrangement of cerebral neurons is revealed in the presence of a cone-shaped trunk at the anterior end of the body, when all 5 pairs of neurons are connected to each other with longitudinal and transverse processes. The rosette-shaped pharynx is innervated with five pharyngeal nerves, while the barrel-shaped pharynx, with six nerves, each of them with one bipolar neuron. From 2 to 5 pairs of neurons of the L-group were revealed. Homology of the L-group neurons has been confirmed in the order Neorhabdocoela. The total number of CAergic neurons varies from 24 to 29.  相似文献

A molecular dynamics study on the solid–liquid (S-L) interfaces for solid wall of gold having the face-centred cubic of (100), (110) and (111) crystal planes contacting liquid methane was examined using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. An investigation on the thermal rectification effect was performed by measuring the thermal boundary conductance (TBC) at the S-L interface. Thermal rectification can be defined as the differences in the TBC at the interface between the two opposite heat flow directions; one is from the liquid to solid and vice versa. The thermal rectifications are up to 13% for (110) crystal plane, followed by 6% and 0.3% for (111) and (100) crystal planes, respectively. It was found that the TBC at the S-L interface was influenced by the magnitude of the adsorption of liquid molecules at the vicinity of the interface. The results show that due to the different temperature distribution, different magnitude of the adsorption of liquid molecules is generated for the two opposite heat flow directions. On the surface of the solid walls for (110) crystal plane, where lattice-scale corrugation exists, it was found that there exists difference in distance between the surface layers of the solid and liquid across the interface between the cases of the two opposite heat flow directions, which affects the TBC at the interface. The present results suggest that the factors that influence the thermal rectification at the S-L interface are the magnitude of the adsorption of liquid molecules and the surface structure of the solid walls that differ significantly among the three types of crystal planes.  相似文献

Alternative current approaches to homology and nomenclature of the insect wing venation are discussed. The differences between the opposing viewpoints are found to be not as deep as they have sometimes been supposed to be, and more so, there are some observations that could help to smooth current contradictions. Dendrocacalia crepidifolia Nakai (Compositae, Senecioneae), the only species of this arboreal genus endemic to Haha Island in the Bonin Islands, was found to be dioecious. Male flowers differ from female ones in having a stunted style (style in female exserted from corolla and deeply bifurcating) and anthers filled with fertile pollen (anthers in the female lacking pollen). The size of the corolla and number of florets per head were similar between male and female flowers. The crown area of this arboreal species was also similar in male and female plants. The sex ratio was 0.55 male, not significantly different from 0.5. Both sexes produced nectar of similar sugar concentration (ca. 50%). The flowers are pollinated by feral honeybees (Apis mellifera), but they are thought to have been pollinated by small, lesshairy, endemic solitary bees before honeybees were introduced and subsequently became the dominant bee species on the island. The evolution of dioecy ofDendrocacalia on the island is thought to stem from the deleterious effects of inbreeding that are inherent in plants with geitonogamy. The increased geitonogamy on the island has resulted from increased woodiness (i.e., increased number of flowers per plant) and the original dependence on endemic bee pollinators, which are now endangered.  相似文献

Pigs might be exposed to lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and deoxynivalenol (DON) at the same time, and both toxins are thought to interactively affect the intestinal barrier, the innate immune system, and the xenobiotics metabolism. Hence, we aimed at examining the single and combined effects of both toxins on nutrient digestibility and DON metabolism. For this purpose, barrows (26?±?4 kg) were fed restrictedly either a control diet (CON) or a diet contaminated with 3.1 mg DON/kg (DON) for 37 days. At day 37 of the experiment, pigs were infused intravenously for 60 min either with 100 μg DON/kg body weight (BW) (CON-DON), 7.5 μg LPS/kg BW (CON-LPS, DON-LPS) or a combination of both substances (CON-DON?+?LPS), or physiological saline (CON-CON, DON-CON). Blood samples were collected frequently until 3.25 h before the pigs were sacrificed for bile, liver, and kidney collection. The apparent digestibility of N-free extractives was significantly increased by 1 % when the DON-contaminated diet was fed. The total DON content in blood was significantly higher in endotoxemic pigs (34.8 ng/mL; CON-DON?+?LPS) when compared to the pigs infused with DON alone (18.8 ng/mL; CON-DON) while bile concentrations were not influenced by LPS. DON residue levels in liver and kidney closely reflected the treatment effects as described for blood. In contrast to DON infusion, the LPS challenge resulted in a significantly lower total DON concentration (13.2 vs. 7.5 ng/mL in groups DON-CON and DON-LPS, respectively) when the pigs were exposed to DON through the diet. The conjugation degree for DON in blood and bile was not influenced by treatments. In conclusion, endotoxemic pigs are characterized by higher DON residue levels in blood, liver, and kidney, probably by a compromised elimination.  相似文献

Climatic conditions, especially the microclimate of the subnivean air space, have been considered to offer possible explanations for the higher values in L. trimucronatus compared to L. The morphology of the olfactory organs in two sharks, the spiny dogfish and the small-spotted catshark, was studied by light microscopy and electron microscopy (TEM and SEM). The olfactory epithelium is arranged on olfactory lamellae which are provided with secondary folds. The epithelium mainly consists of microvillous receptor cells, multiciliated supporting cells and basal cells. The find of only one type of receptor cells, the microvillous type, is discussed and the condition considered a derived (apomorphic) character. The route of the water current through the olfactory organ and the different driving forces of the ventilation process are subject to discussion. In both the pelagic dogfish and the bottom-dwelling catshark the pressure difference between the incurrent and excurrent nostrils achieved by active swimming appears to be the driving force, whereas the role of the beating of the non-sensory cilia is not evident. In the bottom-dwelling catshark the ventilation of the olfactory organ is also supported by the respiratory activity.  相似文献

Numerous individuals of the poorly known species Lecithostaphylus retroflexus (Zoogonidae) and Tergestia acanthocephala (Fellodistomidae) have been recovered from the teleost fish Belone belone gracilis from off the Scandola Nature Reserve, Western Mediterranean. They are redescribed, incorporating previously undescribed features: for L. retroflexus, a post-oral ring, a bipartite seminal vesicle, the shape of the excretory vesicle, the subterminal excretory pore and the flask-shaped gland-cells associated with the distinctly pedunculate ventral sucker; and for T. acanthocephala, the intestinal bifurcation in the forebody, necessitating its return to the genus Tergestia from Theledera. Additionally, T. acanthocephala is compared with T. laticollis from various species of Trachurus from the same geographical area.  相似文献

Thirty-eight dugong (Dugong dugon) hearts and 28 Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus) hearts were obtained from stranding programs in Australia and the United States. In addition to a double ventricular apex, a feature that has astonished scientists since the eighteenth century, the hearts of both animals have a double subvalvular conus and a dorsal left atrium. The heart lies in a vertical plane at right angles to that of the completely dorsal, symmetrical lungs. The dugong heart has a deeper interventricular cleft and a more conical left ventricle. The latter features may be part of a general morphological trend toward specialization for a more energetic aquatic existence. The presence of a bulbous ascending aorta in the manatee but not in the dugong is without explanation.  相似文献

The spleen structurally and functionally belongs to the hematopoietic organs and is also an important component of the reticuloendothelial system, which is known to play a major role in host defense. The histological structure of the spleen was investigated in the ostrich, a non-flying bird, the kestrel, a raptor, and the osprey, a fish-eating bird of prey (fish eagle). For this purpose, Mallory's modified triple stain, methyl green-pyronin and silver stain were used. Germinal centers were not present in the spleen of the osprey. In the spleen of the kestrel, penicillar arterioles and the surrounding lymphoid tissue were markedly dense. Compared to the other two birds, the red and white pulps were clearly distinguishable in the spleen of the ostrich.  相似文献

A faunistic review of larvae and pupae of chironomid midges (Diptera, Chironomidae) from 15 habitats in the Hrazdan River valley (Armenia) is presented. The revealed fauna includes 40 species from 20 genera and 6 families and tribes. Diploid chromosome numbers are specified for 24 species from 13 genera and 4 subfamilies; 23 species from 14 genera and 4 subfamilies are reported from the region for the first time. Predominant oligotrophic status is confirmed for most of the reservoirs studied.  相似文献

The feeding habits of Sparus aurata L., Diplodus annularis L. and Spondyliosoma cantharus L. in the Ria Formosa (southern Portugal) lagoon system were studied using three simple methods (frequency of occurrence, numeric percentage and percentage weight) and a composite index [index of relative importance (IRI)]. The Ivlev index was used to evaluate diet selectivity, while the Schoener overlap index was used to compare diets, and diet diversity was characterized by the Simpson index. The diets of the three species consist of a wide variety of food organisms, nevertheless S. aurata seems to be the most specialized. No significant dietary overlap was found, with S. aurata preferentially selecting gastropods and bivalves, while S. cantharus preferentially selected a wide variety of crustaceans and D. sargus a wider array, including crustaceans, gastropods and bivalves.  相似文献
