The migratory orientation of juvenile white-crowned sparrows, Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelli, was investigated by orientation cage experiments in manipulated magnetic fields performed during the evening twilight period in northwestern Canada in autumn. We did the experiments under natural clear skies in three magnetic treatments: (1) in the local geomagnetic field; (2) in a deflected magnetic field (mN shifted −90°); and (3) after exposure to a deflected magnetic field (mN −90°) for 1 h before the cage experiment performed in the local geomagnetic field at dusk. Subjects showed a mean orientation towards geographical east in the local geomagnetic field, north of the expected migratory direction towards southeast. The sparrows responded consistently to the shifted magnetic field, demonstrating the use of a magnetic compass during their first autumn migration. Birds exposed to a cue conflict for 1 h on the same day before the experiment, and tested in the local geomagnetic field at sunset, showed the same northerly orientation as birds exposed to a shifted magnetic field during the experiment. This result indicates that information transfer occurred between magnetic and celestial cues. Thus, the birds' orientation shifted relative to available sunset and geomagnetic cues during the experimental hour. The mean orientation of birds exposed to deflected magnetic fields prior to and during testing was recorded up to two more times in the local geomagnetic field under natural clear and overcast skies before release, resulting in scattered mean orientations.Copyright 2002 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. 1. In many freshwater systems, competition for shelter plays an important role in determining the persistence of both native and alien species. The red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, is currently invading the native habitat of the signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus, in southern Oregon, and interspecific competition for shelter may be driving the species replacement in this region. 2. We designed a 2 × 3 factorial mesocosm experiment, with shelter density and species combination as factors, to investigate shelter occupancy and resource competition. Contrary to our predictions, the two crayfish species are equal competitors for shelter. Further, the invasive P. clarkii modified its shelter occupancy behaviour in the presence of the native P. leniusculus and has broader microhabitat preferences. 3. Specifically, we found that P. clarkii alters shelter occupancy and space use patterns when the two species occurred together, such that shelter use was identical between P. clarkii and P. leniusculus in mixed‐species treatments. In such treatments, both species increased their use of shelters when shelter density increased. When P. clarkii was alone, however, individuals did not alter shelter use as a function of shelter density, whereas P. leniusculus exhibited similar density‐dependent behaviour in both mixed‐ and single‐species treatments. 4. In a complementary field survey, we employed an ‘epicentre‐based’ design to sample two field sites. We observed patterns of microhabitat use and breadth for each species similar to those in our mesocosm experiment: the invasive P. clarkii was more abundant across different habitats and used a broader range of microhabitats than the native P. leniusculus. As such, we found that P. clarkii was more abundant across both field sites than the P. leniusculus, occupying microhabitats within and beyond the preferred range of P. leniusculus. Both field sites were affected by urban development and agriculture. 5. The use of microhabitats by both species was similar in the laboratory and the field. This study confirms that P. clarkii individuals can, and do, successfully occupy microhabitats preferred by P. leniusculus in the Willamette Valley. The results from our study may be relevant to other freshwater systems inhabited by P. clarkii and contribute to the understanding of ‘niche opportunity’, a concept which defines the environmental conditions that promote biological invasions.  相似文献

How animals, including mammals, can respond to and utilize the direction and intensity of the Earth’s magnetic field for orientation and navigation is contentious. In this study, we experimentally tested whether the Chinese Noctule, Nyctalus plancyi (Vespertilionidae) can sense magnetic field strengths that were even lower than those of the present-day geomagnetic field. Such field strengths occurred during geomagnetic excursions or polarity reversals and thus may have played an important role in the evolution of a magnetic sense. We found that in a present-day local geomagnetic field, the bats showed a clear preference for positioning themselves at the magnetic north. As the field intensity decreased to only 1/5th of the natural intensity (i.e., 10 μT; the lowest field strength tested here), the bats still responded by positioning themselves at the magnetic north. When the field polarity was artificially reversed, the bats still preferred the new magnetic north, even at the lowest field strength tested (10 μT), despite the fact that the artificial field orientation was opposite to the natural geomagnetic field (P<0.05). Hence, N. plancyi is able to detect the direction of a magnetic field even at 1/5th of the present-day field strength. This high sensitivity to magnetic fields may explain how magnetic orientation could have evolved in bats even as the Earth’s magnetic field strength varied and the polarity reversed tens of times over the past fifty million years.  相似文献

Magnetotactic bacteria synthesize intracellular magnetic particles, magnetosomes, which arrange in chain(s) and confer on cell a magnetic dipolar moment. To explore the function of geomagnetic field to magnetotactic bacteria, the effects of hypomagnetic field on magnetosome formation in Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 were studied. Cells were cultivated in a specially designed device where geomagnetic field was reduced by about 100-fold to less than 500nT. AMB-1 cultures were incubated in hypomagnetic field or geomagnetic field. Results showed that hypomagnetic field had no significant effects on the average number of magnetic particles per bacterium and bacterial iron depletion. However, the growth (OD) of cell at stationary-phase was lower and cellular magnetism (R mag) at exponential growth phase was higher than that of bacteria cultivated in geomagnetic field. Statistic results on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs showed that the average size of magnetic particles in AMB-1 cells in hypomagnetic field group was larger than that of in geomagnetic field group and more ratio of larger-size magnetic particles (>50 nm) was observed when cultivated 16 h under hypomagnetic field. Furthermore, the influences of hypomagnetic field on gene expression were studied in AMB-1 cells. Quantitative RT-PCR results showed that hypomagnetic field up-regulated mms13, down-regulated mms6 and had no effect on magA. Together, the results showed that hypomagnetic field could affect the growth of AMB-1 at the stationary-phase, the crystallization process of magnetosomes, and mms13, mms6 expressions. In addition, our results suggested that the geomagnetic field plays an important role in the biomineralization of magnetosomes.  相似文献

The geomagnetic field (GMF) is an environmental cue that provides directional information for animals. The intensity of GMF is varied over space and time. Variations in the GMF intensity affect the navigation of animals and their physiology. In this study, the phototaxis of the migratory insect rice planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (N. lugens) and frataxin in N. lugens (Nl‐fh), which is a mitochondrial protein required for cellular iron homeostasis and iron‐sulfur cluster assembly, were investigated by using different intensities of magnetic field. From the results, individuals of N. lugens showed decreased phototaxis when reared and tested in a behavioral arena under a strong magnetic field. Besides the reduction in performance, an accompanying effect of the strong magnetic field condition was a reduced level of Nl‐fh‐messenger RNA, and a Nl‐fh knockdown indeed impaired the phototactic behavior in a tested sample of insects. This leads to the conclusion that the expression of frataxin is dependent on the strength of the surrounding magnetic field and that functional frataxin facilitates phototactic behavior in N. lugens.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of lifelong exposure to reversed geomagnetic and zero geomagnetic fields (the latter means absence of geomagnetic field) on the life history of Daphnia carinata King from Australia and Daphnia magna Straus from Europe. Considerable deviation in the geomagnetic field from the usual strength, leads to a decrease in daphnia size and life span. Reduced brood sizes and increased body length of neonates are observed in D. magna exposed to unusual magnetic background. The most apparent effects are induced by zero geomagnetic field in both species of Daphnia. A delay in the first reproduction in zero geomagnetic field is observed only in D. magna. No adaptive maternal effects to reversed geomagnetic field are found in a line of D. magna maintained in these magnetic conditions for eight generations. Integrally, the responses of D. magna to unusual geomagnetic conditions are more extensive than that in D. carinata. We suggest that the mechanism of the effects of geomagnetic field reversal on Daphnia may be related to differences in the pattern of distribution of the particles that have a magnetic moment, or to moving charged organic molecules owing to a change in combined outcome and orientation of the geomagnetic field and Earth's gravitational field. The possibility of modulation of self-oscillating processes with changes in geomagnetic field is also discussed.  相似文献

Two ‘cue-conflict’ experiments were designed to evaluate the role of (1) solar cues at sunset and stars, and (2) solar cues at sunset and geomagnetic stimuli, in the migratory orientation of the savannah sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis). A sunset and stars experiment exposed birds in the experimental group to a mirror-reflected sunset followed by an unmanipulated view of stars. Experimental birds shifted their migratory activity in accordance with the setting sun despite exposure to a normal night sky. The sunset and geomagnetism experiment exposed birds in the experimental group to a simultaneous shift in both the position of sunset and the earth's magnetic field. Again experimentals shifted their activity in accordance with the setting sun rather than the artificially shifted magnetic field. Savannah sparrows probaly use stars as celestial landmarks to maintain a preferred direction and do not reorient their activity when exposed to an alternative cue once a direction is established. Moreover, savannah sparrows with experience of migration do not require geomagnetic information in order to use the solar cues available at sunset to select a migratory direction.  相似文献

Leaf‐cutter ants (Atta colombica) use trail following to travel between foraging sites and the home nest. However, this combination of pheromone and visual cues is likely to be complemented by a directional reference system such as a compass, used not only when foraging but also during colony formation, where foraging trails degrade or where ants become displaced. One candidate system is the magnetic polarity compass. We tested the orientation of leaf‐cutter ants under a magnetic field of reversed‐polarity, with the prediction that the ants would show 180° deflection compared with control ants in an unchanged geomagnetic field. When the sun's disc was unobstructed by clouds, orientation was the same as that of control ants, implying that magnetic cues were not used to orient. However, when the sky was overcast, ants in the experimental treatment significantly shifted their mean orientation both in comparison with controls and reversed‐polarity ants under the sun. Although a total reversal in orientation was not induced, the results demonstrate that Atta respond to magnetic reversal in the absence of sunlight cues, and suggest a role for magnetic cues in determining direction during orientation.  相似文献

Effective shelter has been demonstrated to reduce neonatal lamb mortality rates during periods of inclement weather. Periods of high wind speed and rainfall have been shown to influence shelter usage; however, it is not yet known how ewe factors such as breed, age and body condition score influence shelter-seeking behaviour. This study, conducted on a working upland farm in the UK, examined impact of artificial shelter on the biological and climatic factors that influence peri-parturient ewe behaviour. Pregnant ewes (n = 147) were randomly allocated between two adjacent fields which were selected for their similarity in size, topography, pasture management, orientation to the prevailing wind and available natural shelter. In one field, three additional artificial shelters were installed to increase the available shelter for ewes, this field was designated the Test field; no additional artificial shelter was provided in the second field which was used as the Control field. Individual ewes were observed every 2 h between 0800 and 1600 for 14 continuous days to monitor their location relative to shelter. Ewe breed (Aberfield and Highlander), age (2–8 years) and body condition score were considered as explanatory variables to explain flock and individual variance in shelter-seeking behaviour and the prevalence of issues which required the intervention of the shepherd, termed ‘shepherding problems’. Any ewe observed with dystocia, a dead or poor vigour lamb or who exhibited mismothering behaviour was recorded as a shepherding problem. The prevalence of these shepherding problems which necessitate human intervention represents arguably the most critical limiting factor for the successful management of commercial sheep flocks in outdoor lambing systems. Overall, ewes in the Test field with access to additional artificial shelter experienced fewer shepherding problems than those in the Control field (P < 0.05). A significant breed effect was also observed, with Highlander ewes more likely to seek shelter than Aberfield ewes (P < 0.001), and experiencing significantly fewer shepherding interventions (P < 0.05). These findings demonstrate the substantial and significant benefits to animal welfare and productivity that can be achieved through the provision of shelter in commercial, upland, outdoor lambing systems in the UK.  相似文献

In many species, naïve first‐time migrants undertake migration without adults, supposedly on the basis of a ‘simple’ vector programme that combines an innate directional preference with a temporal programme that specifies distance. In strongly dimorphic species in which the sexes show distinct ecological requirements, the innate mechanisms of navigation may be expected to diverge between males and females with respect to their specific destinations. Based on captures of juvenile Ruff Philomachus pugnax at a migratory stopover over 21 years, a correlation was found between the year‐specific sex ratio and the global magnetic field disturbance during the 2 weeks prior to the peak of captures in that year. This suggests that males and females respond differently to geomagnetic disturbance with changes in either the direction of migration or the level of migratory activity, and implies sex‐specificity in the use of their geomagnetic navigational ‘toolbox’.  相似文献

Grape downy mildew (GDM), which is caused by Plasmopara viticola (Berk et Curt.) Burl. & de Toni, is the most destructive grapevine disease in the world. In this study, we chose three cultivars that differ in their resistance to GDM and compared the effects of rain‐shelter cultivation and open‐field cultivation methods on GDM epidemics (2012–2015). The temporal dynamics of GDM were examined over a 4‐year period the results indicated that the disease index fit an S‐shaped curve, and further analysis revealed that a logistic model best fit the disease development and derived epidemic periods. Rain‐shelter cultivation significantly delayed the epidemic onset by 30 days, reduced the epidemic phase by 4 days, and decreased the final disease index by 50% as compared to open‐field cultivation. The logistic and decline phases were shortened significantly by 7 and 21 days under rain‐shelter conditions, respectively. Moreover, the rain‐shelter cultivation technique effectively decreased the highest apparent infection rate and standard area under the disease progression curve values associated with reduced disease severity. The above results demonstrate that rain‐shelter cultivation significantly affects temporal dynamics parameters of GDM. Meteorological factors had significant effects on the GDM epidemic in that the apparent infection rate was significantly positively correlated with mean temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, and leaf wetness duration before the first week of the experiment.  相似文献

The coldwater crayfish Orconectes eupunctus is endemic to the Spring and Eleven Point Rivers of Arkansas and Missouri, and appears to have been displaced from a portion of its range by the recently introduced ringed crayfish Orconectes neglectus. We examined competition among juveniles as a potential mechanism for this crayfish species displacement through laboratory and field experiments. Orconectes eupunctus juveniles survived and grew in stream cages in their former range, implicating biotic interactions rather than habitat degradation in the displacement. Laboratory experiments revealed O. neglectus juveniles were dominant in the presence of limited food, whereas size rather than species determined occupancy of limited shelter. In a field competition experiment using stream cages, O. neglectus juveniles did not inhibit growth or reduce survival of O. eupunctus juveniles. Consequently, laboratory evidence of O. neglectus dominance did not correspond with competition under field conditions. Combined with previous studies examining the effects of O. neglectus on O. eupunctus, these results suggest that competition may not be a factor in this crayfish species displacement. Alternate mechanisms for the apparent displacement of O. eupunctus by O. neglectus, such as differential predation or reproductive interference, should be investigated.  相似文献

Connectivity among most marine species depends of their life cycles, and the main phase that can regulate dispersal is the larval stage of an organism. Girella laevifrons (Girellidae) is an omnivore fish inhabiting in intertidal pools as juveniles and subtidal reefs as adults from northern to central Chile. It has a pelagic larval duration for approximately 69 days. In this study, we used eight molecular markers (microsatellites) to explore the genetic structure of their populations along 400 km of the central Chilean coast.20 juveniles were sampled from four different populations. Microsatellite loci did not detect a genetic structure within a 400 km scale along the coast of Central Chile. There is evidence (Fst = ?0.0038, p = 0.8954) suggesting that populations between Coquimbo and Littoral Central behave as a single whole population. This could be an estimate that may define future management units for the species.  相似文献

In the absence of empirical evidence, invasive species are often assumed to have negative impacts because of their conspicuously high abundance. The giant African land snail Achatina (Lissachatina) fulica is one such invader where its impact in natural ecosystems remains completely untested. On Christmas Island (Indian Ocean), A. fulica has become established across large tracts of rainforest following the impacts of invasive yellow crazy ant (Anoplolepis gracilipes) in mutualism with non‐native scale insects. Yellow crazy ants facilitate the secondary invasion of A. fulica by extirpating native red land crabs (Gecarcoidea natalis) that are normally effective predators of A. fulica. We used a multifaceted approach to investigate some potential impacts of abundant A. fulica in invaded rainforest. Over the course of a wet season, diel activity transects showed that A. fulica consumed detrital material almost exclusively. However, stable isotope analysis did not confidently identify A. fulica as a predominantly detritivorous species. We found no statistically significant treatment effects of A. fulica exclusion on standing leaf litter and seedling recruitment processes during a 6‐month manipulative field study. However, litter cover and biomass did remain slightly higher where A. fulica were excluded, albeit with overlapping confidence intervals with control plots. Our study constitutes the first empirical test for impact of A. fulica in a natural ecosystem and suggests that for Christmas Island rainforest, this species is not a damaging invader. Other studies will need to assess the impacts of A. fulica in other natural areas before these findings could be considered broadly applicable.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of Stomoxys spp. was studied in a rainforest area, Ipassa‐Makokou biosphere reserve located in the Ivindo National Park of Gabon. From April to June 2006, Vavoua traps were set out during 15 consecutive days per month at different heights above ground level corresponding to vertical layers of rainforest: 50 cm, 10, 20 and 30 m. Stomoxys calcitrans, S. transvittatus, S. omega, S. niger niger and S. niger bilineatus were more abundant at near ground level (50 cm), whereas abundance of S. xanthomelas was greatest in traps higher (20 and 30 m) in the canopy. Fly abundance was significantly different among vertical layers of the forest (H = 36.91; P < 0.001, ddl = 3), and among species to another (H = 41.11, P < 0.001). Vertical distribution of fly species corroborates feeding behaviour as the identification of blood meal origins showed heterogeneity of feeding hosts. High densities of flies were also observed at 10 m, and most S. inornatus were captured at that level. These results show that Stomoxyine flies in this rainforest are present in all vertical layers, from the ground level to the canopy. Their ubiquity, regarding both their habitats and their hosts, should be taken into account if a vector control strategy is planned in this touristic area.  相似文献

Abstract Although most reptiles have polygynous mating systems without long‐term pair bonds, one lineage of large scincid lizards in Australia is exceptional in this respect. Reports of complex sociality in the genus Egernia led us to conduct the first radiotelemetric field study of a species within this group. Land mullets (Egernia major) are large (60 cm total length), viviparous lizards from rainforest habitats in south‐eastern Australia. To document the spatial ecology and social organization of this species, we captured 12 adult lizards in the Barrington Tops area of eastern New South Wales and implanted them with miniature radiotransmitters. The lizards were released at their sites of capture and located daily for the next 6 weeks. All of the radiotracked lizards had discrete home ranges of approximately 10 000 m2, based around well‐defined core areas (approximately 2000–3000 m2). Females tended to move further, and to range over wider areas, than did males. All of the radiotracked lizards lived in social groups consisting of one or more adult males and females plus juveniles of all age classes. Subgroups were apparent within one group of five radio‐tagged lizards: individual animals consistently shared their shelter sites and home ranges with one or more specific individuals. Male/female pairings were more frequent than expected under the null hypothesis of random association among individuals. The data in the present study support anecdotal reports of pair bonds in E. major and support suggestions that the social systems of species in this genus are more complex than those of previously studied reptiles.  相似文献

A combined magnetostratigraphic and biostratigraphic study has been performed on the Maastrichtian Senpohshi Formation in eastern Hokkaido Island, northern Japan, which is an approximately 1300 m thick section mainly composed of hemipelagic mudstone. The identification of magnetic polarity was possible at 51 horizons, whereby four magnetozones were recognized. These magnetozones were correlatable to geomagnetic polarity chrons C31r to C30n, suggesting that the age of the Senpohshi Formation is spanning from middle to upper part of the Maastrichtian (ca. 69–67 Ma).The magnetostratigraphy of the Senpohshi Formation established in this study enables a direct age correlation to the Maastrichtian successions in other regions. Thus, this detailed chronology of the formation contributes to paleontological studies of the Maastrichtian in the North Pacific region. For instance, this magnetostratigraphic age assessment implies the following: (1) the stratigraphic range of the ammonite Pachydiscus flexuosus contains polarity chrons from the lower part of C31r to the lower part of C31n, (2) the first occurrence (FO) of the calcareous nannofossil Nephrolithus frequens in the North Pacific region is correlatable to polarity chron C30n or below, and (3) the FO of the bivalve “Inoceramusawajiensis is located within polarity chrons from C31r to the upper part of C31n. This suggests that the inoceramid extinction event in the North Pacific region might have occurred during polarity chrons from C31r to the upper part of C31n (ca. 70.5–67.8 Ma), which is 2.3–5.0 Myr prior to the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary. The trend of the Maastrichtian faunal turnover in the North Pacific is well consistent with those of other regions, brings a new evidence for understanding the global faunal turnover in the Maastrichtian, just before Cretaceous/Paleogene mass extinction.  相似文献

Geographic variability in the physiological attributes of widely distributed species can be a result of phenotypic plasticity or can reflect evolutionary responses to a particular habitat. In the field, we assessed thermal variability in low and high intertidal pools and the distribution of resident fish species Scartichthys viridis and transitory Girella laevifrons along this vertical intertidal gradient at three localities along the Chilean coast: Antofagasta (the northernmost and warmest habitat), Carrizal Bajo (central coast) and Las Cruces (the southernmost and coldest habitat). In the laboratory, we evaluated the thermal sensitivity of fish captured from each locality. The response to temperature was estimated as the frequency of opercular movements and as thermal selectivity in a gradient; the former being a indirect indicator of energy costs in a particular environment and the latter revealing differential occupation of habitat. Seawater temperature in intertidal pools was greatest at Antofagasta, and within each site was greatest in high intertidal pools. The two intertidal fish species showed opposite patterns of local distribution, with S. viridis primarily inhabiting the lower sectors of the intertidal zone, and G. laevifrons occupying the higher sectors of the intertidal zone. This pattern was consistent for all three localities. Locality was found to be a very important factor determining the frequency of opercular movement and thermal selectivity of both S. viridis and G. laevifrons. Our results suggest that S. viridis and G. laevifrons respond according to: (1) the thermal history of the habitat from which they came, and (2) the immediate physical conditions of their habitat. These results suggest local adaptation rather than plasticity in thermoregulatory and energetic mechanisms.  相似文献
