There has been no study on the chitin structure of wasp species. Here, we selected the three most common wasp species belonging to the family Vespidae for chitin extraction and characterization. Chitin was isolated from each wasp species and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X‐ray diffractometry (XRD), elemental analysis (EA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chitin contents of Vespa crabro, Vespa orientalis, and Vespula germanica were 8.3, 6.4, and 11.9%, respectively. The crystalline index (CrI) values for the chitin extracted from each species were 69.88, 53.92, and 50%, respectively. The most important finding of the study is that although the same method was used to extract chitin from each of the three wasp species, the degree of acetylation was different: for V. crabro and V. orientalis it was 96.85 and 99.82% (the chitin was extremely pure), respectively, whereas that for V. germanica the chitin was 79.83%.  相似文献

Recent studies have focused on the role of behavior in biological invasions. Individuals may differ consistently in time for several behavioral traits (personality) which covary (behavioral syndrome) resulting in different behavioral types, some of them favoring invasion. Social hymenopterans have a strong potential to be invaders and their success depends primarily on the foundresses’ ability to found viable colonies. They are expected to be active, explorative and bold for optimally establishing their nest. In Europe, 2 hornet species coexist: the native Vespa crabro and the invasive Vespa velutina. These 2 species may compete for nesting sites and we suggest that the initial success of V. velutina has been favored by its behavior in outperforming V. crabro for the traits involved in nest initiation. Here, we (i) defined the personality of V. crabro and V. velutina, (ii) tested for the existence of behavioral syndrome in these species, and (iii) compared their performances using an open‐field test. Our results show that V. crabro foundresses behave consistently but not V. velutina; this lack of consistency being mainly due to reduced variance among individuals. This result questions the possibility of detecting consistent behavioral differences in species having recently undergone a strong bottleneck. Both species exhibit the same correlations between activity, boldness and exploration and V. velutina clearly outperforms V. crabro for all traits. Our results suggest that activity, boldness, and exploration are implicated in both hornet nest initiation and invasion process which contributed to explain why social hymenopterans are so successful at colonization.  相似文献

1. Invasive alien species are a major threat to biodiversity. In addition to predation and parasitism, native species might suffer from competition when invasive alien species occupy a similar ecological niche. 2. This study focused on the potential interspecific interaction between two hornets: the Asian yellow‐legged hornet, Vespa velutina, a high‐concern invasive alien species recently arrived in Europe; and the native European hornet, Vespa crabro. The two species share a similar ecological niche and V. velutina is rapidly expanding across Europe, which suggests that V. crabro might suffer from competition. 3. Under laboratory‐controlled conditions, two life‐history traits that might cause the two species to compete were investigated: (i) the ability of workers to find food sources and their flexibility in exploiting them (through individual food item choice tests and exploration assays); and (ii) the worker resistance to pathogens (through immune challenge tests). 4. The results show that trophic preference of both species highly overlaps, with a marked dietary preference for honeybees compared with other insect prey and non‐prey protein items. No differences were observed in the exploratory behaviour of both species. Finally, constitutive antibacterial activity was greater in workers of the native species than in workers of the invasive hornet. 5. This laboratory study provides a first assessment under controlled conditions of the factors affecting competition between workers of two hornet species and proposes a framework to assess, in wild contexts, the magnitude of the competition and the impact of the introduced V. velutina on the native V. crabro.  相似文献

We tested the influence of illuminance and level of forager experience on nest orientation behavior of the social wasps Vespula vulgaris, Vespa crabro, and Dolichovespula saxonica in an artificial laboratory tunnel system. The number of wasps which oriented themselves chemically via a terrestrial trail or used visual orientation were determined at different illuminance levels for foragers which were naïve or experienced with the tunnel system. In V. vulgaris and D. saxonica, mainly the young and naïve foragers used the chemical trail for orientation in brightness. Experienced foragers used visual cues for nest orientation. In V. crabro, naïve and experienced foragers followed the chemical trail in a similar intensity. In darkness, when visual orientation was limited, the relative importance of the chemical trail increased dramatically in all species and all experience classes.  相似文献

Summary. Males of Polistes dominulus perform antennal vibrations and grasping of female antennae during pre-copulatory and copulatory phases. Male antennation plays a relevant role in mating success. In several antennomeres of males of P. dominulus and Vespa crabro, a further species in which we observed male antennation, we found secretory cells of class 1 and 3 associated to the same release site. In P. dominulus, class 3 cells with ampulla-like reservoirs and class 1 cells release their secretion through hairless multiporous areas. In V. crabro, tyloid-like structures are associated with large apodemes. The as yet unidentified secretion of these glands may act as a contact or low-volatile sex pheromone during courtship behaviour.Received 4 December 2003; revised 16 August 2004; accepted 7 September 2004.  相似文献

Hymenopterans are an important model for studying the evolution of cooperation in animal societies. Here, we characterize 19 microsatellite loci, isolated from the common wasp Vespula vulgaris, that can be used to study genetic variation in three genera (seven species) within the Vespidae. The number of alleles in V. vulgaris was moderate, varying from 2 to 14, with expected heterozygosity ranging between 0.04 and 0.93. Eleven loci amplified DNA in V. austriaca and Dolichovespula sylvestris, nine in V. germanica, eight in Vespa crabro and V. rufa, seven in D. media and only five loci could be used for D. norwegica.  相似文献

Morphological, mineralogical, and chemical investigations were undertaken to determine the structure and composition of the cell walls of the comb in the nest of Vespa orientalis, Paravespula germanica, and Vespacrabro. Nests of V. orientalis were from three sites having different soil types, namely, Khamra soil, Gramosol soil, and organically rich soil from the city dump in Tel Aviv. Nests of P. germanica were from areas rich in organic matter, and those of V. crabro, shipped from Austria, were similarly comprised of organic matter. Structure and composition of cell walls in the three species differed; furthermore, grain size in the combs differed from that of particles in the surrounding soil.  相似文献

Since its accidental introduction in 2004, the Asian yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina) has quickly spread in France. V. velutina specializes in the emblematic honeybee, Apis mellifera which are unable to protect their colonies efficiently against this fierce new predator. Here, we investigated whether two defence devices, a ploy and a muzzle, can protect bee colonies. Our results showed that neither device was able to reduce the number of hornets present in front of the hive or their predation efficiency (i.e. the number of captured bees). However, we found more flying bees and a smaller bee carpet in the presence of a muzzle, evidence that this very cheap method of protection can reduce the hornets’ impact on the activity of the bee colony and thus probably enabling its survival. We also showed that the number of agonistic interactions among V. velutina individuals increased with the number of hornets but without influencing the predation rate in our experimental conditions. The threat to honey bees is now well described, but the Asian yellow-legged hornet very likely has an impact on another insect species that has been the subject of far fewer studies: The native European hornet (Vespa cabro). Monitoring of several apiaries suggests that high densities of both V. velutina and V. crabro are exclusive and that the two species are engaged in an exploitative competition interaction. We are thus already in a position to underline the need for combined protection, as well as for further studies to better understand the ecology of V. velutina, to reduce the damage they cause.

Thermoregulation in the nests of hornets
Summary In the nest of Vespa crabro, a very constant temperature of 30° C is maintained by female adults (workers and queens) in the vicinity of pupae. Daily temperature variation between larval cells on the other hand is larger and the average temperature about 0,4° C lower. Larvae are not warmed by the adults.Larvae in nests without adults exhibit an autonomous temperature regulation. In this paper the thermoregulatory movements of larvae are described and distinguished from those normally described as hunger signals and begging movements.Female adults warm older pigmented pupa, even when outside the nest. This behavior is probably stimulated by a pheromone.Differences in thermoregulation are discussed and are contrasted with those of the honey bee and V. orientalis.

Fifteen Eurasian and Australian species of Viscum L. were examined by light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. Pollen characters divide the species into two groups, each correlated with differences in habit and inflorescence structure: Group I (12 spp.) characterized by psilate or slightly sculptured exines and a non-uniform ektexine pattern and Group II (3 spp.) possessing highly sculptured (echinate, rodlet) surfaces and uniform ektexine patterns. Within each of the groups, pollen characters divide the species into several subgroups. Among Group I, species V. nepalense, V. heyneanum and V. ovalifolium are particularly close. The Group I species, V. trilobatum, is placed in its own subgroup primarily because of its uniform ektexine pattern—a unique feature among Asian and Australian Viscum. Of the three Group II species, V. album and V. alniformosanae are palynologically almost indistinguishable. Pollen of the Group II V. cruciatum, though exomorphologically similar to V. album, is closest ultrastructurally to the Indian V. trilobatum. Overall, the most common and probably basic pollen characters among the Eurasian and Australian species include: subprolate, rounded convex almost spherical shapes; tricolporate apertures, and non-uniform sculpturing and ektexine patterns. Oblate-spheroidal or prolate-spheroidal shapes, prominent sculpturing, and a uniform ektexine pattern are derived characters largely restricted to the Eurasian and Asian Group II species (V. album, V. alniformosanae, V. cruciatum).  相似文献

Wilts, E.F., Wulfken, D., Ahlrichs, W.H. and Martínez Arbizu, P. 2012. The musculature of Squatinella rostrum (Milne, 1886) (Rotifera: Lepadellidae) as revealed by confocal laser scanning microscopy with additional new data on its trophi and overall morphology.—Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 93 : 14–27. The monogonont rotifer Squatinella rostrum was investigated with light, scanning electron and confocal laser scanning microscopy to reveal new morphological data on its inner and outer anatomy. In total, the visualized somatic musculature displays five paired longitudinal muscles (musculi longitudinales I–V) and nine circular muscles (musculi circulares I–IX). Compared to other species, S. rostrum is characterized by the absence of several longitudinal and circular muscles (e.g. musculus longitudinalis capitis, corona sphincter and pars coronalis). A reconstruction of the mastax musculature revealed a total number of seven paired and two unpaired mastax muscles. Possibly homologous somatic and mastax muscles in other, thus far investigated rotifers are discussed. Moreover, we provide a phylogenetic evaluation of the revealed morphological characters and suggest possible autapomorphic characters supporting Squatinella and Lepadellidae. Finally, we refer to some striking similarities in the morphology, ecology and way of movement of Squatinella and Bryceella that may indicate a closer relationship of both taxa.  相似文献

Aim: Lactobacillus plantarum AS1 was incubated with HT‐29 adenocarcinoma cell line to assess its adhesion potency and examined for its inhibitory effect on the cell attachment by an enterovirulent bacterium Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Methods and Results: Lactobacillus plantarum AS1 attached efficiently to HT‐29 cells as revealed by scanning electron microscopy and bacterial adhesion assay. Lactobacillus plantarum AS1 significantly reduced V. parahaemolyticus attached to HT‐29 cells by competition, exclusion and displacement mode. Lactobacillus plantarum AS1 seems to adhere to human intestinal cells via mechanisms that involve different combinations of carbohydrate and protein factors on the bacteria and eukaryotic cell surface. Conclusion: Strain Lact. plantarum AS1 inhibits the cell attachment of a pathogen V. parahaemolyticus by steric hindrance mechanism. Also, antibacterial factors such as bacteriocins, lactic acid and exopolysaccharides could be involved. Significance and Impact of the Study: The ability to inhibit the adhesion of V. parahaemolyticus to intestinal cell line warrants further investigation to explore the use of probiotic strain Lact. plantarum AS1 in the management of gastroenteritis caused by V. parahaemolyticus.  相似文献

Hemocytes represent one of the most important defense mechanisms against foreign material in Mollusca. The morphology, hematological parameters and behaviour of hemolymph cells were studied in the southern quahogMercenaria campechiensis, the eastern oysterCrassostrea virginica, and the blood arkAnadara ovalis challenged with the bacteriaVibrio vulnificus andV. anguillarum. Two general classes of hemocytes (granular and agranular) exist inC. virginica andM. campechiensis. In contrast,A. ovalis possesses 3 general classes (granular, agranular and erythrocytes). Three types of granules were identified by light microscopy. When hemolymph cells were studied by transmission electron microscopy, the cytoplasm of hemolymph cells was noted to contain many organelles, including electron dense granules. Both agranular and granular hemolymph cells were capable of colchicine-sensitive pseudopodial movement and spreading. The results indicate that marine bivalves possess hemolymph blood cells which may play a role in the internal defense paralleling mammalian phagocytes. The morphology of these cells, as determined by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, showed some similarity to mammalian-mononuclear phagocytes. The sub-cellular events of molluscan hemocyte phagocytosis ofV. vulnificus andV. anguillarum were studied by both scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The role of these cells and the factors which govern their behavior are of economic and public health importance.  相似文献

This is the first record of Xenos moutoni, a specialized parasite of hornets (Vespa spp.), in Korea. Among six Vespa species collected with bait traps in Andong, central South Korea, approximately 10% of female Vespa analis (gynes plus workers) were parasitized, whereas the other five species (V. crabro, V. mandarinia, V. simillima, V. ducalis, and V. dybowskii) were not. Almost all parasitized hornets had a single female parasite in the gaster.  相似文献

Mandible development in the larval stages I–V of two palaemonid shrimp species, Palaemon elegans and Macrobrachium amazonicum, was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, light microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. In contrast to the zoea I of P. elegans, first‐stage larvae of M. amazonicum are nonfeeding. At hatching, the morphology of the mandibles is fully expressed in P. elegans, while it appears underdeveloped in M. amazonicum, presenting only small precursors of typical caridean features. In successive zoeal stages, both species show similar developmental changes, but the mandibular characters of the larvae in M. amazonicum were delayed compared to the equivalent stages in P. elegans, especially in the development of submarginal setae and mandible size. In conclusion, our results indicate heterochrony (postdisplacement) of mandible development in M. amazonicum compared to that in P. elegans, which is related to initial lack of mandible functionality or planktivorous feeding at hatching, respectively. This conclusion is supported by comparison with other palaemonid zoeae exhibiting different feeding modes. Our data suggest that an evolutionary ground pattern of mandible morphology is present even in species with nonfeeding first‐stage larvae. J. Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a common marine foodborne pathogen that causes gastroenteritis. With the long-term use of antibiotics, many bacteria become resistant; therefore, developing antibiotic-free antimicrobial strategies is urgent. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a constituent of polyphenols present abundantly in tea extract, has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and is non-toxic. Here, we take advantage of these properties of EGCG to evaluate its inhibition effect on the growth and biofilm formation of V. parahaemolyticus 17802, and explore its antibacterial mechanism. It was found that EGCG showed antibacterial activity against V. parahaemolyticus 17802, and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was estimated to be 128 μg ml−1. Results of crystal violet staining and confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) evidenced that EGCG hindered its biofilm formation. Moreover, the swimming motility and extracellular polysaccharides were also notably inhibited. The antibacterial mechanism was further confirmed by several assays, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and live/dead staining assay, together with membrane permeability assay, which all suggested that EGCG caused damage to cell membrane and made it lose integrity, eventually resulting in the death of V. parahaemolyticus 17802. The bactericidal activity of EGCG verified its potential as a promising candidate to combat foodborne pathogen.  相似文献

Valeriana scandens presents perfect and pistillate flowers, the latter with sterile anthers. The species is composed of two varieties with different ploidy; V. scandens var. scandens (2n = 28) and V. scandens var. candolleana (2n = 56), both of which occur in RS, Brazil. Crosses between these varieties may give rise to hybrids with pollen sterility. In this study, we analyzed the microsporogenesis and microgametogenesis of sterile and fertile anthers, and also investigate whether pollen sterility is caused by an irregular meiotic process. Developmental analysis using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed that sterile anthers develop similarly to fertile anthers until the end of meiosis. After this stage, sterile tetrads do not separate as a consequence of exine fusion between adjacent microspores, which is similar to sterile pollen of Brassica ms-cdl1 mutants. In addition, vacuolated immature pollen grains degenerate after separation. The cytogenetic analysis of the microspore mother cell (MMC) showed that the diploid population of V. scandens var. scandens (2n = 28) has pollen sterility that is not caused by a cytogenetic disturbance. The MMCs analyzed from prophase I to tetrad stage showed a regular meiotic process, indicating the phenotype of V. scandens sterile pollen is a postmeiotic process formed by fusion of exine between opposite microspores.  相似文献

The first comprehensive analysis of higher‐level phylogeny of the order Hymenoptera is presented. The analysis includes representatives of all extant superfamilies, scored for 392 morphological characters, and sequence data for four loci (18S, 28S, COI and EF‐1α). Including three outgroup taxa, 111 terminals were analyzed. Relationships within symphytans (sawflies) and Apocrita are mostly resolved. Well supported relationships include: Xyeloidea is monophyletic, Cephoidea is the sister group of Siricoidea + [Xiphydrioidea + (Orussoidea + Apocrita)]; Anaxyelidae is included in the Siricoidea, and together they are the sister group of Xiphydrioidea + (Orussoidea + Apocrita); Orussoidea is the sister group of Apocrita, Apocrita is monophyletic; Evanioidea is monophyletic; Aculeata is the sister group of Evanioidea; Proctotrupomorpha is monophyletic; Ichneumonoidea is the sister group of Proctotrupomorpha; Platygastroidea is sister group to Cynipoidea, and together they are sister group to the remaining Proctotrupomorpha; Proctotrupoidea s. str. is monophyletic; Mymarommatoidea is the sister group of Chalcidoidea; Mymarommatoidea + Chalcidoidea + Diaprioidea is monophyletic. Weakly supported relationships include: Stephanoidea is the sister group of the remaining Apocrita; Diaprioidea is monophyletic; Ceraphronoidea is the sister group of Megalyroidea, which together form the sister group of [Trigonaloidea (Aculeata + Evanioidea)]. Aside from paraphyly of Vespoidea within Aculeata, all currently recognized superfamilies are supported as monophyletic. Seed micromorphology in 22 species, capsule surface in 28 species and capsule hairs in 20 species of genus Verbascum distributed in Iran were studied using scanning electron microscopy. The seed surface is ridged or alveolate among the studied species. Depth and density of the alveoli or ridges, size of polygonal cells along with arrangement of vesicles on the walls separating the polygonal cells on the seed surface seem to be species-specific in Verbascum. The capsule surface is striate, distinctly or indistinctly, or even smooth in Verbascum. The capsules are rarely glabrous (in V. orientale and V. intricatum), densely covered by branched hairs, or loosely by glandular hairs, depending on species. From the results of this study it is obvious that no correlation exists between the studied species concerning the micromorphological aspects studied here.  相似文献
