The restoration of threatened species involves understanding multiple aspects of the life history and ecology of the target species. One important consideration in the restoration of threatened species is feeding ecology. We examined the summer diet of reintroduced juvenile lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) in the Genesee (n = 119, ages 1 and 2) and the St. Regis rivers (n = 40, ages 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7) of New York State, USA, in the summer of 2005. The most common taxa consumed were Diptera (88% of prey biomass) in the Genesee River and Ephemeroptera (35% of prey biomass) and Diptera (29%) in the St. Regis River. Diptera: (Chironomidae) was the major prey taxon in both benthic communities. Selectivity analysis showed a positive selection of Diptera by Genesee River lake sturgeon and an avoidance of Diptera by St. Regis River lake sturgeon. The St. Regis River lake sturgeon showed avoidance of Coleoptera, but positive selection of Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, and Oligochaeta. Results indicate that the reintroduced juvenile lake sturgeon are growing and successfully finding prey in these two rivers and appear to actively select specific prey types.  相似文献

Annual monitoring of the apron Zingel asper in the Durance River, a tributary of the Rhône in which the fish is endemic, indicated its narrow diet range. Three types of prey made up the basic diet: Diptera (Simulidae and Chironomidae), mainly in winter, and Ephemeroptera (Baetidae) and Trichoptera (Hydropsychidae), during the rest of the year. Although some potential prey (Coleoptera and Gammaridae) were present in the substratum, they were not found in the stomach contents of the apron. In spring specific food items (Heptageneidae) appeared to be actively searched for as indicated by stomach contents. This period coincided with the renewal of growth. More than 80% of the annual occurred before the beginning of autumn.  相似文献

The lake sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens, is a threatened species across most of its range. To understand any potential shifts in diet across season or habitat, stomach contents were examined from juvenile lake sturgeon caught in the Winnipeg River, Manitoba, Canada. This information will aid in assessment of environmental impacts and conservation initiatives for this threatened species. From 2006 to 2008 gut contents were collected from juvenile lake sturgeon using a non‐lethal gastric lavage methodology. Juvenile lake sturgeon were sampled from four discrete deep water habitat types (13.7–27.4 m depths), during the months of May, June, July and October. In total, 13 066 prey items belonging to 14 prey groups were collected from 345 juvenile lake sturgeon (251–835 mm TL). Overall, juvenile lake sturgeon consumed a low diversity of organisms; insect larvae from three invertebrate orders, Trichoptera, Diptera and Ephemeroptera, accounted for 97.4% of the total numeric abundance of prey items recovered. A relationship between size of juvenile lake sturgeon and prey quantity or type was not observed. Diet of juvenile lake sturgeon varied in relation to season, with Diptera (77.6%) being the most abundant prey in May, Trichoptera the most abundant in June (n = 3,056, 60.4%) and July (n = 2,055, 52.6%). During October, 96% of stomachs examined were empty. In terms of habitat type, the standardized abundance of invertebrate prey items was highest in deep water habitats characterized by medium water velocity (depths > 13.7 m) and coarse substrate (particle sizes > 0.063 mm) in May and June when compared to deep water habitats characterized by low water velocity (<0.2 m.s?1) and fine substrate (particle sizes < 0.063 mm). However, in July, the opposite was observed and prey abundance in juvenile lake sturgeon stomachs decreased with increasing particle size. Results suggest a high degree of dietary overlap among juvenile lake sturgeon from multiple size/age classes occupying deep‐water habitats of the Winnipeg River.  相似文献

The gut contents of 12 museum specimens of the federally (USA) endangered Alabama sturgeon were analyzed. This collective series represents 32% of the known museum specimens. Gut contents were dominated by aquatic insects and fishes. At the taxonomic level of insect orders, Dipterans (174.3/fish) were the most numerically abundant food item consumed, followed by Ephemeroptera (19.0/fish), Trichoptera (4.0/fish), Coleoptera (2.4/fish), and Odonata (2.0/fish). Weight, which better reflects the caloric value of food items consumed, showed a similar consumption pattern. Dipterans (12.5%) made up the largest percentage of the total weight of insect prey, followed by Ephemeroptera (8.9%), Trichoptera (6.0%), Odonata, (4.5%) and Coleoptera (0.9%). Volumetric values were substantially higher than weights for Odonata (13.4%) and Ephemeroptera (14.3%), but were comparable for Diptera (10.6%), Trichoptera (4.7%), and Coleoptera (2.2%). The diet of the Alabama sturgeon is similar to the pallid and shovelnose sturgeon, eating both aquatic invertebrates and fish. In terms of piscivory, the volume of fish in the diet of the Alabama sturgeon (34.5%) is intermediate between that of the shovelnose (0% fish) and the pallid sturgeon (60% fish). Based upon the habitat preference of the prey family assemblages present from the 12 guts examined, probable feeding habitats of this sturgeon include sandy to rocky bottoms, slow to swift water velocities, and the water column. Conservation of fish prey may be important to the survival and recovery of the Alabama sturgeon.  相似文献

Gut contents of shovelnose and pallid sturgeon from the lower and middle Mississippi River were obtained by colonic flushing, a safe and easily implemented alternative to gastric lavage. Diets of both species were dominated numerically by immature Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, and Diptera. Primary prey, based on volume, for shovelnose sturgeon were Trichoptera, and for pallid sturgeon were various fishes. Geographic and seasonal nuances in diet were observed for both species, but the general dichotomy of shovelnose sturgeon as browser on invertebrates and pallid sturgeon as predator on fishes did not change. Data indicate that both species require hard substrates for feeding. Data demonstrate that colonic flushing is an effective technique for describing diet and inferring ecological and behavioral information about sturgeon.  相似文献

Increased mortality of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.), related to lowered levels of stored energy following the loss of ice cover during winter, has been observed after hydropower development in the subarctic River Alta, northern Norway. Drift samples were compared to examine if drift densities, and thus drift prey availabilities for juvenile salmon, were lower in the ice-free than the ice-covered area. In addition, juvenile salmon stomach contents were compared to benthos and drift in the ice-free area to examine salmon winter feeding habitat. Zooplankton, originating from the reservoir, dominated drift at the ice-free site but had lower densities at the downstream ice-covered site. Excluding zooplankton, Chironomidae comprised most of the remaining drift at both the ice-free and ice-covered site, followed by Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Simuliidae. No Trichoptera were found in the drift samples. There was no consistent diel periodicity in drift. Benthos was dominated by Chironomidae, followed by Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera. Other invertebrates occurred in low numbers. Juvenile salmon demonstrated size-selective feeding and fed mainly on Ephemeroptera, followed by Trichoptera and Plecoptera. No zooplankton and few Chironomidae were found in the stomach samples. Stomach content was more similar to benthos than to drift, indicating a larger extent of benthic than drift feeding. No evidence was found for the hypothesis that lack of ice cover reduced the invertebrate drift or caused diel periodicity in the drift. Differences in drift between areas with and without ice could not account for the observed differences in mortality of juvenile salmon during the winter in these areas.  相似文献

The pallid sturgeon ( Scaphirhynchus albus ) is an endangered species native to the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. To date, recovery efforts have focused on stocking juvenile fish, but little is known about ontogenetic changes in diet composition. Although diet composition for pallid sturgeon is believed to change from macroinvertebrates to fish, it is unclear at what size and/or age these ontogenetic diet shifts occur. To evaluate diet composition, 29 hatchery-stocked pallid sturgeon (range 356–720 mm fork length [FL]; mean = 549; SE = 23) were collected from the Missouri River downstream of Fort Randall Dam, South Dakota and Nebraska during summer 2006. The majority of pallid sturgeon (72%) were captured within a large delta region formed by the Niobrara River in the headwaters of Lewis and Clark Lake. Predominant prey of pallid sturgeon based on percent occurrence was Ceratopogonidae (81%), Isonychiidae (67%), Chironomidae (52%), and fishes (24%). Percent composition by wet weight showed that diets were composed of fishes (68%), Ephemeroptera (23%), Decapoda (6%), and Diptera (3%). Graphical analysis of combined data showed that mayflies, particularly Isonychiidae, were an important component of pallid sturgeon diets. Nonetheless, the percent composition of fishes in the diet increased with pallid sturgeon body size; for fish > 600 mm FL (5–7 years of age) diets were composed primarily of fish prey (66%, mostly johnny darters Etheostoma nigrum ). These findings highlight the importance of ontogenetic changes in diet composition for pallid sturgeon. Moreover, the unique habitat formed in the delta region is characterized by higher fish and invertebrate densities that may enhance foraging opportunities and thus improve recovery efforts for stocked pallid sturgeon.  相似文献

The Amur sleeper diet spectrum was investigated in addition to its spatial, seasonal and size-related changes, in order to predict which groups of native prey would be most affected by this exotic predator that has rapidly invaded many Eastern and Central European inland waters in recent decades. In total, 527 Perccottus glenii individuals were collected in four sites in the Włocławski Reservoir (the Vistula River, Baltic basin, Poland). Altogether 50 food categories were identified, including crustaceans, insects, molluscs, annelids, araneids, fishes and amphibians. Most of them were associated with aquatic vegetation, indicating that the Amur sleeper collects its prey from the submerged plants rather than directly from the bottom sediments. Amphipods and chironomid larvae, supplemented by zygopteran larvae and molluscs, composed the main forage base in all studied sites, although their importance was varied. The diet composition differed among P. glenii size-groups. Significant variation was found in numeric abundance of amphipods, chironomid larvae, fish and zygopteran larvae (Kruskal–Wallis P < 0.01). Seasonal changes in the diet were also observed whereby in spring and summer, dipteran larvae and amphipods were prevalent food items; the importance of molluscs and zygopteran larvae increased considerably in September; and fish showed the highest occurrence in June, July and August. The broad diet spectrum of the Amur sleeper indicates that it is a non-selective, opportunistic predator and that several taxonomic groups of native hydrofauna as well as macroinvetebrates and fish may be affected by its presence. The highly flexible feeding strategy undoubtedly favours Amur sleeper expansion in invaded watersheds.  相似文献

Synopsis We measured macroinvertebrate densities and abundance, size, and diet of juvenile smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu, at five sites located at varying distances from a metalimnetic release dam. We used these data to determine the influence of high prey abundances on stomach fullness and age-0 year-class strength. Summer diets of juvenile smallmouth bass (27.7–107.7 mm total length) were dominated by Ephemeroptera (primarily Baetidae) but diet composition was highly variable among years and sites. A linear index of prey selection showed that Ephemeroptera were preferred and Trichoptera were avoided at all sites in all years; but, selection indices were not consistent for Chironomidae or Amphipoda and Isopoda. In two of three years, stomach fullness (gut content mass relative to predicted maximum) of juvenile smallmouth bass decreased with distance downstream of the dam, which reflected patterns observed in benthic macroinvertebrate densities. However, in 1989 when flooding and increased turbidity reduced abundances of juvenile smallmouth bass, no differences in stomach fullness were found among sites. High stomach fullness of juvenile smallmouth bass was attributed to high prey abundances near the dam in years of low or normal streamflow. However, patterns in juvenile smallmouth bass abundances in mid-summer could not be attributed to longitudinal variation in prey abundance.  相似文献

Feeding habits of Oxygymnocypris stewartii were investigated based on monthly sampling in the Yarlung Zangbo River from August 2008 to August 2009. The gut contents of 194 individuals were analysed and quantified with numerical and gravimetric methods. This species can be considered a generalized and opportunistic predator feeding both on teleosts and aquatic insects. A multivariate analysis revealed noticeable variation in O. stewartii diet composition with fish size and season. The smaller specimens fed primarily on Cobitidae and Hydropsychidae. As they grew, Cyprinidae and Chironomidae larvae became important prey. The preferred food items were teleosts in summer and autumn. For winter and spring, the predominant prey switched to chironomidae larvae. Diet composition did not significantly vary between the sexes. Finally, a significant and positive correlation between predator and prey length was found. These findings provide the fundamental information better understanding the role of this important endemic species in the Yarlung Zangbo River food web.  相似文献

Euphaea decorata in Tai Po Kau Forest Stream (Hong Kong) was univoltine. Most recruitment took place in summer, and larval growth proceeded throughout the year. Life-cycles recorded in 1977–78 and 1978–79 were similar. Annual production estimates, using the removal-summation, instantaneous growth and size-frequency methods, were more similar for the 1978–79 generation (ranging from 158.7–174.7; mean 1671 mg dry wt m-2) than for the 1977–78 generation (93.9-173-6; mean 131.7 mg dry wt m-2). Mean biomass was similar for both generations (ranging from 33.5–33.9 mg dry wt m-2), and mean P/B ratios were 3.9 1977–78) and 5.0 (1978–79). These are the first estimates of annual production by an Oriental stream insect.
Larvae were most abundant at microsites in the middle of the stream. Multiple regression analysis indicated that substratum characteristics were a major determinant of microdistribution. Euphaea decorata apparently favoured poorly-sorted sediments with highly peaked grain size-frequency distributions, containing few fine particles.
The carnivorous larvae showed ontogenetic changes in diet. Small individuals consumed mainly chironomid (Diptera) larvae; the diet expanded to include (successively) larvae of Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera as E. decorata grew. Seasonal changes in diet were also apparent, although larval diets during spring and summer were similar. There was also considerable overlap between autumn and winter diets. Ontogenetic influences upon prey consumed were not sufficient to account for the observed seasonal differences.  相似文献

Summary Acroneuria californica has a life cycle of three years and nymphs of quite different sizes were present throughout the year. The annual cycle of feeding habits is described. Diptera were heavily consumed in summer and Trichoptera in winter. Ephemeroptera were a regular component of the diet with minor peaks in spring and late summer. A positive relationship is shown between the size of stonefly nymphs and their prey of three insect orders. A size-dependent relationship is also shown in the qualitative nature of the diet. Trichoptera were eaten by large nymphs, Ephemeroptera by those of intermediate size and Diptera by the smallest nymphs. Interactions between prey size and seasonal availability are discussed.
Zusammenfassung Acroneuria californica hat einen dreijährigen Lebenszyklus, und Nymphen von ganz verschiedener Grösse waren anwesend während des Jahres. Der jährliche Zyklus der Nahrungsgewohnheiten ist beschrieben. Im Sommer wurden Diptera bevorzugt, im Winter Trichoptera. Ephemeroptera waren ein regulärer Teil der Nahrung mit kleinen Spitzen im Frühling und im Spätsommer. Ein positives Verhältnis ist aufgezeigt zwischen der Grösse von Nymphen und ihrer Beute von drei Insektenordnungen. Ein grössenabhängiges Verhältnis ist auch aufgezeigt in der qualitativen Art der Nahrung. Trichoptera wurden von grossen Nymphen verzehrt, Ephemeroptera von mittleren und Diptera von den kleinsten. Die Wechselwirkung zwischen Grösse der Beute und jahreszeitlicher Verfügbarkeit wird diskutiert.

Obtaining food following the transition from endogenous to exogenous feeding and during the first year of life is a critical event that strongly influences growth and survival of young‐of‐year fishes. For shovelnose sturgeon Scaphirhynchus platorynchus, limited information is available on food habits during the first year of life. The objective of this study was to quantify diet components of shovelnose sturgeon during the transition from endogenous to exogenous feeding and during the young‐of‐year life stage in the North Dakota and Montana portions of the Missouri River. Young‐of‐year shovelnose sturgeon were sampled between early August and early September 2003. Shovelnose sturgeon initiated exogenous feeding by 16 mm, and individuals 16–140 mm fed exclusively on two macroinvertebrate orders (Diptera and Ephemeroptera). Young‐of‐year shovelnose sturgeon exhibited an apparently high feeding success as 99 of 100 individuals contained food in the gut. The number of organisms in the gut increased exponentially with fish length for larval Diptera (r2 = 0.73, P < 0.0001) and linearly (r2 = 0.12, P = 0.0006) for larval Ephemeroptera, but the number of Diptera pupae in the gut was not significantly related (P = 0.55) to length of young‐of‐year shovelnose sturgeon. The length of ingested prey was linearly related to fish length for Diptera larvae (r2 = 0.20, P = 0.002), whereas the relationship between lengths of ingested Ephemeroptera larvae and lengths of young‐of‐year shovelnose sturgeon was best described by a power function (r2 = 0.50, P < 0.0001). These results provide the first quantification of feeding dynamics for young‐of‐year shovelnose sturgeon in a natural river environment.  相似文献

The diet of Daubenton’s batMyotis daubentonii (Kuhl, 1817), which takes prey by aerial hawking and from the surface of water, was investigated by analysis of faeces collected in summer at 7 roosts, all close to rivers in pastoral land, in three widely-separated districts in Ireland. Forty-seven categories of arthropod prey were identified; several were insect taxa found in and around water. Most categories were recovered at most roosts, but mainly in small amounts. The main categories were the same throughout, accounting for 82% of the diet by percentage frequency in droppings for pooled data: Chironomidae/Ceratopogonidae 24% (adults 14%, preadult stages 10%), other nematoceran Diptera 21%, other Diptera 10%, and Trichoptera 26% (adults 20%, preadult 6%). A quarter of the prey had evidently been obtained from the water’s surface (eg aquatic insects, their larvae and pupae). Although consumption of several food items varied significantly by month at one or more roosts, little of such variation was consistent between roosts.  相似文献

The diet composition was quantified of year‐0 Scaphirhynchus sturgeons during sampling years (2004–2008) from the Middle Mississippi River to evaluate trends in diet. River stage height varied among years and seasons. Water temperature differed among seasons but did not differ among years. The presence of empty stomachs was evident across years, seasons, and size classes of sturgeon. The overall Multivariate Analysis of Variance for frequency of occurrence was significant, suggesting that macroinvertebrate taxa (e.g. Ephemeroptera, Diptera pupae, Chironomidae, ‘Other’) differed among size classes of sturgeon, but not seasons or years. Furthermore, Tukey's pairwise comparisons indicated Ephemeroptera frequency of occurrence differed between medium and large size classes; Diptera pupae differed between small and medium size classes and small and large size classes; Chironomidae differed between small and large size classes and medium and large size classes; the macroinvertebrate taxa category ‘Other’ differed between small and large size classes. Ultimately, because of the link between diet and growth of year‐0 Scaphirhynchus sturgeon, the early life history may affect eventual recruitment to adult stages.  相似文献

Food resource use by seven cyprinids from an Iberian stream was analysed over 9 months. Differences in food resource use were found both between species and within species between seasons. Plant material was a more important food for carp, nase, goldfish and barbel than for gudgeon, roach and chub, irrespective of the season. Chironomid larvae were the staple animal food for the former five species throughout the year. Roach and chub, especially the latter, displayed large seasonal variations in prey use, with chironomid larvae only being important during autumn. Ephemerellid nymphs and ephemeropteran imagos dominated the animal diet of chub during spring and summer, respectively. Dipteran adults and Formicidae were the most important prey for roach during spring and summer, with other common prey being ephemerellid nymphs and hydropsychid larvae. Food resource overlap among the three dominant species (roach, barbel and chub) displayed a large seasonal variation. High overlaps were observed during autumn when these species used the same resources. During summer overlaps were much lower with each species specialising on different prey. The remaining less abundant species had large diet overlaps amongst themselves and with barbel, over all seasons. It is suggested that morphological constraints, habitat partitioning and temporal changes in food resource limitation may be involved in producing these patterns of food resource use.  相似文献

Habitat preference and diet of 0+ barbel were studied both on a meso- and a microhabitat scale in the River Sieg (Germany) between May 1993 and January 1995. Changes in mesohabitat use were observed. Barbel moved from shallow bays (larvae and step 1 juveniles) to gravel banks, and subsequently, to riffles (step 2 juveniles). Size-dependent shifts in microhabitat-use were observed during the second juvenile step. These juveniles left the shoreline and preferred microhabitats with stronger current velocities. 0+ barbel in riffles fed on Chironomidae and Ephemeroptera. No remarkable shifts in diet were detected between larvae and juveniles. We suggest that the observed ontogenetic shifts to habitats with high food supply and low predation pressure might contribute to the high abundances of barbel in the River Sieg.  相似文献

(1) Seasonal variation in the intensity of feeding activity was demonstrated in two chub populations. Feeding activity was higher in summer and more pronounced in the young age-classes. The intensity of feeding activity was significantly correlated with temperature. (2) The diet of the total chub populations embraced a wide range of food items but vegetable material predominated. Substrate material was frequently encountered which suggested considerable feeding on the river bed. Fish were the most important animal food, by volume, in the River Lugg but Trichoptera larvae were most important in the Afon Llynfi. No remains of salmon parr or trout were found in chub stomachs but grayling were eaten. The most important prey fish, by volume, was the eel but cyprinids, especially minnows, were most important by frequency of occurrence. (3) Seasonal variation in the composition of the diet could be related to availability of food organisms but some selection was shown. Vegetable foods were most important in summer; animal foods, Trichoptera larvae in particular, were important in winter. (4) Analysis of the variation in the composition of the diet with age revealed several trends, notably a decrease in the importance of plant material, aquatic and aerial insects with age and a corresponding increase in the importance of larger prey foods such as fish, frogs and crayfish. (5) The commonly held view that chub are deleterious to salmonid stocks was examined. The absence of direct predation and the small likelihood of direct competition suggests that this view is incorrect.  相似文献

Prior to anthropogenic modifications, the historic Missouri River provided ecological conditions suitable for reproduction, growth, and survival of pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus. However, little information is available to discern whether altered conditions in the contemporary Missouri River are suitable for feeding, growth and survival of endangered pallid sturgeon during the early life stages. In 2004 and 2007, nearly 600 000 pallid sturgeon free embryos and larvae were released in the upper Missouri River and survivors from these releases were collected during 2004–2010 to quantify natural growth rates and diet composition. Based on genetic analysis and known‐age at release (1–17 days post‐hatch, dph), age at capture (dph, years) could be determined for each survivor. Totals of 23 and 28 survivors from the 2004 and 2007 releases, respectively, were sampled. Growth of pallid sturgeon was rapid (1.91 mm day?1) during the initial 13–48 dph, then slowed as fish approached maximum length (120–140 mm) towards the end of the first growing season. The diet of young‐of‐year pallid sturgeon was comprised of Diptera larvae, Diptera pupae, and Ephemeroptera nymphs. Growth of pallid sturgeon from ages 1–6 years was about 48.0 mm year?1. This study provides the first assessment of natural growth and diet of young pallid sturgeon in the wild. Results depict pallid sturgeon growth trajectories that may be expected for naturally produced wild stocks under contemporary habitat conditions in the Missouri River and Yellowstone River.  相似文献

The composition and content of fatty acids (FAs) in total lipids, triacylglycerols (TAG) and polar lipids (PL) in dominant groups of benthic invertebrates: gammarids (Gammaridae, Amphipoda), chironomid larvae (Chironomidae, Diptera), caddisfly larvae (Trichoptera) and mayfly larvae (Ephemeroptera) were studied in the Yenisei river. For the first time data on the FA composition of species belonging to Trichoptera (Insecta) are presented. The groups of aquatic insect larvae and gammarids weakly differed in total content of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Hence, the strong invasion of gammarids which occurred in the last decades in the Yenisei river should not result in a decrease in potential yield of essential PUFA in the ecosystem and corresponding decrease in food resource quality for fish in respect to PUFA content. Significant differences in biomarker FAs in TAG were found which correlated to specific food sources. Different levels of long-chain PUFA in PL of the invertebrates are discussed in relation to the genetic ability of particular taxa to form these FAs.  相似文献
