The effects of philopatry on levels of genetic differentiation were examined in the Aphelocoma jays through comparisons of gray-breasted jays (A. ultramarina; highly philopatric) and scrub jays (A. coerulescens; dispersing). Gray-breasted jays breed cooperatively in groups of up to 25 individuals, with individuals typically breeding either on the natal territory or on adjacent territories. Western North American scrub jays breed in non-cooperative pairs, with individuals typically dispersing at least 0.5 km, and often much farther. Genetic differentiation among six populations in northern Mexico and the south-western United States in each of the species was compared using starch-gel electrophoresis of protein products of 29 presumptive genetic loci. Strong differences in levels of genetic differentiation exist between the two species, both when measured using F-statistics and in terms of the slope of the isolation by distance relationship. These results suggest that social systems involving high degrees of philopatry may lead to considerably elevated rates of genetic differentiation and speciation.  相似文献

Aplysia californica is a species widely used in neurobiology, and specimens are collected from a wide range of places along its distribution range. A. californica is endemic to the coast of California and the Gulf of California. On the west coast, this is an unusual distribution range relative to other benthic species from that region. Four polymorphic nuclear Mendelian markers were identified (three single-copy nuclear DNA loci and one microsatellite) for an initial survey of genetic variation of wild populations. F ST values not significantly different from 0 (overall F ST= 0.0148) suggest there was no geographic genetic population subdivision in 177 individuals examined. The pine-oak woodlands of the Mexican highlands harbour significant biological diversity, yet little is known about the evolutionary history of organisms inhabiting this region. We assessed genetic and phenotypic differentiation in 482 individuals representing 27 populations of the Mexican jay ( Aphelocoma ultramarina ) — a widespread bird species of the Mexican highlands — to test whether populations in the central and northern Mexican sierras display discrete breaks between groups, which would be consistent with a role for the different mountain chains in divergence and speciation. We found abrupt breaks in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA; ND2 and control region) delineating four major genetic groups found in the Sierra Madre Occidental, Sierra Madre Oriental, southern Central Plateau (Bajio), and Transvolcanic Belt. These mtDNA groups were largely corroborated by data from nuclear microsatellites and phenotypic data, except that clades from the Central Plateau and Sierra Madre Oriental showed clinal change in these data sets. Uncertainty about the mutation rate for our mitochondrial markers warrants considerable caution with regard to estimating divergence times, but the major genetic groups appear to have split before the most extreme period of glacial cycling that marked the last 0.7 million years and after Mexico's period of major mountain formation. The fact that some genetic breaks do not coincide with well-known geographic barriers suggests a role for ecology in divergence and speciation, and we discuss implications for taxonomy and conservation.  相似文献

This study documents the ability of African elephants (Loxodonta africana) and California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) to perform a two-choice object discrimination task. Both species were able to perform this task. However, California sea lions took fewer trials overall to reach a criterion of 10 consecutively correct responses than did African elephants. The performance of California sea lions did not change significantly during this study. However, African elephants showed a gradual learning of the task, as exhibited by a gradual decrease in the number of trials needed to reach criterion. This performance difference may reflect differences in either visual abilities or cognitive functioning, which in turn may be influenced by either different evolutionary pressures exerted on herbivores and carnivores, or by the context in which visual information is used in the lives of these animals. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The delimitation of populations, defined as groups of individuals linked by gene flow, is possible by the analysis of genetic markers and also by spatial models based on dispersal probabilities across a landscape. We combined these two complimentary methods to define the spatial pattern of genetic structure among remaining populations of the threatened Florida scrub-jay, a species for which dispersal ability is unusually well-characterized. The range-wide population was intensively censused in the 1990s, and a metapopulation model defined population boundaries based on predicted dispersal-mediated demographic connectivity. We subjected genotypes from more than 1000 individual jays screened at 20 microsatellite loci to two Bayesian clustering methods. We describe a consensus method for identifying common features across many replicated clustering runs. Ten genetically differentiated groups exist across the present-day range of the Florida scrub-jay. These groups are largely consistent with the dispersal-defined metapopulations, which assume very limited dispersal ability. Some genetic groups comprise more than one metapopulation, likely because these genetically similar metapopulations were sundered only recently by habitat alteration. The combined reconstructions of population structure based on genetics and dispersal-mediated demographic connectivity provide a robust depiction of the current genetic and demographic organization of this species, reflecting past and present levels of dispersal among occupied habitat patches. The differentiation of populations into 10 genetic groups adds urgency to management efforts aimed at preserving what remains of genetic variation in this dwindling species, by maintaining viable populations of all genetically differentiated and geographically isolated populations.  相似文献

Serotonin has been shown to be a neuromodulator in the Aplysia californica CNS. The diversity of serotonin actions is due to the existence of several different receptor subtypes. In this study we report the cloning of a full-length cDNA, coding for a novel serotonin receptor (5-HTap2). The receptor protein bears the characteristics of G protein-coupled receptors. It shares 68% and 34% of its amino acid sequence identity with the 5-HTlym receptor from Lymnaea stagnalis and the mammalian 5-HT1A receptor, respectively. When transfected in HEK 293 cells, 5-HTap2 was negatively coupled to adenylate cyclase. Ligand binding analysis indicated that the order of potencies of various drugs for the inhibition of [3H]LSD binding was: methiothepin > metergoline > 5-CT > PAPP > 5-HT > ketanserin > NAN-190 > 8-OH-DPAT > clozapine. RT-PCR amplification of RNA isolated from different tissues indicated that this receptor is expressed in the CNS and in bag cells. The expression of 5-HTap2 restricted to the CNS suggests an important role for this receptor in the modulation of neuronal functions in Aplysia. Moreover, the high expression of 5-HTap2 in the bag cells, associated with its pharmacological profile, suggests that this receptor may be implicated in modulating the afterdischarge during the egg-laying behavior.  相似文献

Essigella californica is a pine aphid native to western North America. In Australia, E. californica is considered an invasive pest that has the potential to cause severe economic loss to the Australian forestry industry. Two CLIMEX models were developed to predict the Australian and global distribution of E. californica under current climate conditions based upon the aphid's known North American distribution. The first model (model I) was fitted using the reasonably contiguous set of location records in North America that constituted the known range of E. californica, and excluded consideration of a single (reliable) location record of the aphid in southern Florida. The second model (model II) was fitted using all known records in North America. Model I indicated that the aphid would be climatically restricted to the temperate, Mediterranean and subtropical climatic regions of Australia. In northern Australia it would be limited by hot, wet conditions, while in more central areas of Australia it is limited by hot, dry conditions. Model II is more consistent with the current Australian distribution of E. californica. The contrast in geographical range and climatic conditions encompassed between the two models appears to represent the difference between the realized niche (model I) and fundamental niche (model II) of E. californica. The difference may represent the strength of biotic factors such as host limitation, competition and parasitism in limiting geographical spread in the native range. This paper provides a risk map for E. californica colonization in Australia and globally. E. californica is likely to remain a feature of the Australian pine plantations, and any feasibility studies into establishing coniferous plantations in lower rainfall areas should consider the likely impact of E. californica.  相似文献

Lasthenia californica sensu Ornduff consists of two races that differ in their flavonoid pigments and edaphic tolerances. Recent phylogenetic studies of Lasthenia have revealed that members of L. californica sensu Ornduff belong to two phylogenetic species. The relationship of the edaphic races to these new species and to each other is the focus of this study. Characterization of flavonoid profiles and phylogenetic placement of 33 populations demonstrates that races and phylogenetic taxa are not concordant, suggesting that one or both edaphic races evolved in parallel in the two clades. We hypothesize an edaphically linked ecological role for flavonoid differences that first revealed the existence of two races.  相似文献

The mark/rouge test has been used to assess mirror self‐recognition (MSR) in many species. Despite consistent evidence of MSR in great apes, genetic or non‐genetic factors may account for the individual differences in behavioral responses that have been reported. We examined whether vasopressin receptor gene (AVPR1A) polymorphisms are associated with MSR‐related behaviors in chimpanzees since vasopressin has been implicated in the development and evolution of complex social relations and cognition and chimpanzees are polymorphic for the presence of the RS3‐containing DupB region. We compared a sample of DupB+/? and DupB?/? chimpanzees on a mark test to assess its role on social behavior toward a mirror. Chimpanzees were administered two, 10‐min sessions where frequencies of mirror‐guided self‐directed behaviors, contingent actions and other social behaviors were recorded. Approximately one‐third showed evidence of MSR and these individuals exhibited more mirror‐guided self‐exploratory behaviors and mouth contingent actions than chimpanzees not classified as passers. Moreover, DupB+/? males exhibited more scratching and agonistic behaviors than other male and female cohorts. Our findings support previous studies demonstrating individual differences in MSR abilities in chimpanzees and suggest that AVPR1A partly explains individual differences in MSR by influencing the behavioral reactions of chimpanzees in front of a mirror.  相似文献

Insight into the speed and predictability of local adaptation can be gained by studying organisms, such as invasive species, that have recently expanded their geographical ranges. Common garden studies were designed to address these issues with the California poppy, Eschscholzia californica, collected from a wide range of environments in both its native (California) and invasive (Chile) ranges. We found similar patterns of plant trait variation along similar abiotic gradients in plants collected from both areas. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that coastal plants from both areas tended to be shorter, smaller plants with smaller seeds and flowers that germinate and flower later than plants collected from inland locations. In addition, size and fecundity traits in both native and invasive poppies were correlated with average rainfall totals; the plants that grew the largest and were the most fecund during the first year of growth originated from the driest areas. This parallel variation suggests that these traits are adaptive and that these patterns have evolved in Chile during the 110-150 years since introduction.  相似文献

Studies in pinniped whisker use have shown that their whiskers are extremely sensitive to tactile and hydrodynamic signals. While pinnipeds position their whiskers on to objects and have some control over their whisker protractions, it has always been thought that head movements are more responsible for whisker positioning than the movement of the whiskers themselves. This study uses ball balancing, a dynamic sensorimotor skill that is often used in human and robotic coordination studies, to promote sea lion whisker movements during the task. For the first time, using tracked video footage, we show that sea lion whisker movements respond quickly (26.70 ms) and mirror the movement of the ball, much more so than the head. We show that whisker asymmetry and spread are both altered to help sense and control the ball during balancing. We believe that by designing more dynamic sensorimotor tasks we can start to characterise the active nature of this specialised sensory system in pinnipeds.  相似文献

We describe 11 microsatellite loci isolated from the American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos), the most wide‐spread cooperatively breeding bird in North America. Polymorphism at these loci ranged from four to 43 alleles, and observed heterozygosities from 0.53 to 0.92. Genetic parentage analyses using these markers will allow us to describe the mating system of this common but socially complex species, and to interpret their behavioural interactions in light of relatedness.  相似文献

Abstract Hybridizing California and Gambel's Quail ( Callipepla californica and C. gambelii ) are unlike many hybridizing avian species in that pairing primarily occurs within a flock, or covey, that is composed of several families. Coveys in the area of sympatry contain mostly hybrid individuals, relative to parental types. I tested whether individuals perceive covey mates as a single species and whether pairing within the covey causes inbreeding and a loss of reproductive success. Individuals discriminated between the parental species in captivity, but actual pairing in the wild was random with respect to species. Contrary to expectation, coveys were not more inbred than the local population. Results suggest that potential costs of inbreeding may be avoided through sex-biased dispersal and nonrandom pairing. Furthermore, breeding occurred earlier and with greater success in pairs formed within the resident covey, rather than outside it. These findings suggest that fitness benefits gained from pairing early within a mixed-species covey promote interspecific pairing. This study provides evidence that mating behaviors specific to local conditions maintain hybrid zones when genetic costs to interbreeding are small.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to characterize behavioural responses of male hamsters in each of three test contexts after they had experienced either a single social defeat or a neutral encounter. In experiment 1, hamsters were observed in a familiar social context (i.e., their home cages), and defeated males displayed different amounts of time and submissive behaviours towards a known opponent than a novel intruder, whereas males in the neutral-encounter groups did not show such differences. In experiment 2, in an unfamiliar social context (i.e., a Y-maze), defeated males generated submissive behaviours and fear memory towards a known opponent that they re-encountered 5-min and 24-h after the defeat. The formation of long-term memory was interrupted by an injection of anisomycin (210 mg/kg). In experiment 3, in a non-social, anxiogenic context, hamsters that had previously had different social experiences did not demonstrate additional anxiety in an elevated plus-maze, with the exception of males that had previously experienced repeated social defeats. Our data suggested that hamsters’ behavioural changes following defeat are context-dependent and stimulus-specific. The experience of a single social defeat is sufficient to regenerate submissive behaviours and fear memory when reencountering a known opponent.  相似文献

When administered intracerebroventricularly (ICV) in rats, corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) possesses arousing and anxiogenic properties, which may be found reflected in autonomic and behavioral activation. As these responses are dependent on dose and situation, ICV-injected CRF may affect behavioral responses to a defined stimulus in a different fashion than autonomic concomitants. Two experiments were conducted in order to test this hypothesis. In both experiments, rats were treated ICV with CRF or an artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) 5 min prior to a 15-min exposure to an electrified prod (shock-prod burying test, SPB test) in their home cages. In the first experiment, 0.3 ng CRF injected ICV in unhandled rats significantly reduced the prod-burying response to electric shock, in favor of immobility, whereas following 300 ng CRF ICV, the predominant behavioral response was grooming behavior. In contrast, habituated rats, implanted with telemetric devices to measure heart rate, core temperature, and gross activity in the second experiment, showed a significant increase of burying behavior after 0.3 ng CRF ICV, in comparison to vehicle-treated controls. However, simultaneous cardiac acceleration was of the same magnitude and duration in both groups. In addition, whereas similar rises in CT were observed in both groups during the SPB test, CRF-treated rats showed more marked rise in core temperature during the first 15 min of the posttest period. At the 24-h retention test, rats belonging to the CRF group showed burying behavior and HR responses, in onset, magnitude, and duration similar to day 1, whereas extinction of the burying response and tachycardia was found in controls. Changes in CT, although less marked, showed the same pattern as on day 1 in both groups. These results show a differential effect of central CRF on behavioral and autonomic activation induced by a well-defined stressful stimulus. The response to CRF seems to be not only situation related, but also dependent on the pretest experience of the animal.  相似文献

During the nonbreeding season (autumn and winter), hazel grouse(Bonasa bonasia) males and females associate as loosely boundpairs, not as strongly bound pairs as previously thought. Thesepairs could be considered cooperative alliances, with each membergaining both direct and indirect benefits. The most importantdirect benefit appeared to be mutual vigilance against predators. This benefit was found at two levels: at the level of arborealfeeding sites, two birds could forage faster and farther fromcover than single birds, and at the territory scale, the pairwas together more in dangerous habitats. By foraging fartherfrom cover, two birds could use about 23% more of the preferredfood trees and 9%–10% more of the food available withina territory than a single bird, partially mitigating the costof having two birds feeding on limited winter food in the samespace. Defending a common territory appeared to be a less importantdirect benefit of the alliance because the members of a pairdid not defend the same territory and often associated withneighboring birds of the opposite sex. A future benefit of thealliance was having breeding partners in the spring; this wasmost beneficial for males, as the sex ratio was male biased.Members of the pair were often apart. At arboreal feeding sites, this separation was perhaps because the most preferred trees, black alders (Alnns glutinosa) with the most staminate catkins, were located in areas with the most cover, where one bird maybe safer from predators than two. Members of pairs in more securehabitats were more often with extrapair birds of the oppositesex. This suggested a trade-off; birds in safe habitats mayhave visited potential breeding partners, but birds in dangeroushabitats may have had to remain together, foregoing this option,to increase their survival probability. This social organizationappeared to be an adaptation to surviving in a heterogeneoushabitat, with some of the winter food located in dense coverand some located in more open and dangerous situations.  相似文献
