The autumn migration of raptors at Falsterbo, Sweden has been studied since the early 1940s, and from 1973 standardized counts were made. Here we present data for 15 species over a 39-year period from 1942–97. These are discussed in the context of available information on population trends in Sweden and neighbouring countries. Although annual numbers and concentration rate vary considerably between species, population changes are very well reflected in the migration figures from Falsterbo. Most raptors showed stable populations at a fairly high level during the 1940s, but a marked decline was already obvious in White-tailed Eagle Haliaeetus albicilla and Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus. During the 1950s and 1960s, a more or less steep decline occurred in most species. Four species started to increase during the 1960s, but the real change came during the 1970s. At that time, decreased human persecution and a reduction in the effects from pesticides resulted in a general increase in Scandinavian raptors, with only Honey Buzzard Pernis apivorus continuing to decrease. The increases continued during the 1980s, but in the 1990s many raptors seem to have reached stable numbers or to have started to decline again. Two species, Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus and Montagu's Harrier C. pygargus show a positive trend through the study period. Numbers of Northern Harrier Circus cyaneus, Rough-legged Buzzard Buteo lagopus and Eurasian Kestrel Falco tinnunculus stabilized during the 1980s and show a clear decline since then, most probably due to a general lack of rodent peaks in Northern Scandinavia since 1982. Most species of raptors seem to be doing reasonably well at the moment, but a continuous decline in Honey Buzzard and Common Buzzard Buteo buteo is disturbing, and is possibly due to declining proportions of old deciduous forest and grazed meadows in Scandinavia. Since a general census programme of birds of prey does not exist in Sweden, the migration counts at Falsterbo is the best general method of monitoring population changes.  相似文献

In last twenty years, the sea eagle population in South Bohemia was restored by strict protection subsidized by reintroduction, The active help consisted of feeding during winter and building of artificial nests. A new sea eagle breeding population arose in the Treboǎ basin area in the early 1980' s. Until this time sea eagles had used former breeding places only for wintering, probably coming from the Baltic. The South Bohemian sea eagle population is very unique: it exists in a densely man-occupied landscape, mainly in areas with very intensive carp breeding in artificial fishponds and was partly artficially (help to wintering birds and reintroduction of some individuals) restored. Wildlife-vehicle collisions have significant consequences for both humans and animals, including injuries, deaths, and vehicle damage. Therefore, analysis of accident data is important for planning countermeasures and appropriate wildlife management. In this research field, roadkill incidents have been extensively studied in many taxa, while railway accidents have received less attention despite their obvious impact on wildlife. Here we applied a Bayesian state-space model to 31 years of collision data, both on railways and on roads, collected by the Ministry of the Environment in Hokkaido prefecture, Japan, to reveal the spatiotemporal dynamics of accidents for white-tailed eagles, Steller's sea eagles, and red-crowned cranes, for which over hundred accidents were reported in the data. Our analysis suggested that the mean annual number of individuals collected per collision site across Hokkaido increased 47,377-fold in the white-tailed eagle, 40,277-fold in the Steller's sea eagle, and 50,584-fold in the red-crowned crane between 1991 and 2021. There have been concerns about the impact of traffic accidents on the population dynamics of these endangered birds, but no formal analyses have been conducted. Our analysis showed numerically that the negative impact has been increasing annually. These results suggest that long-term data accumulation over large spatial scales allows us to understand the dynamics of accidents and predict potential factors underlying collision risks.  相似文献

In the Mediterranean, most areas belonging to the initial distribution range of the Osprey Pandion haliaetus have been lost and local populations have disappeared in recent decades because of persecution. Even though direct management actions have allowed local partial recovery, the Mediterranean population currently only holds a few tens of breeding pairs and is still exposed to local extinction risks. One of the last Mediterranean Osprey breeding areas lies along the North African coast between Morocco and Algeria. In this paper, we report new information on the Osprey population within the Al Hoceima National Park, Morocco. The status of the population for 2012 and 2013 is reported and compared with data collected during the period 1983–1990. A reduction in number of nests and breeding pairs was observed and a 35.7% decrease in the population size recorded. In addition, we discuss the main identified threats to Osprey habitats (e.g. dynamite and poison fishing) that affect the Osprey breeding population in this area. In this context, we stress the necessity for urgent measures to be adopted at the local scale for the protection of this vulnerable population in the light of a sound conservation strategy also at the scale of the Mediterranean.  相似文献

A unique community of four syntopic eagle species exists in north‐central Kazakhstan. Questions about behaviour and genetics in these four species would benefit from the development of microsatellite markers. We isolated eight polymorphic microsatellite repeats (AAAG)n from the eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca) genome using a hybridization enrichment technique. These loci revealed moderate diversity in a local population of eastern imperial eagles (observed heterozygosity 0.26–0.78), and were also polymorphic in steppe eagles (A. nipalensis) and white‐tailed sea eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla). These primers may be polymorphic in other species of Aquila and Haliaeetus eagles.  相似文献

The hypothesis was to test whether a ratio of estrogen:androgen in eagle feces would reflect gonadal activity, and whether our procedure for noninvasive hormone analysis of fecal steroids could be applied to assess seasonal reproductive function in four captive bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). Total immunoreactive excretory estrogens (E) and testosterone (T) were analyzed and compared as an E/T ratio from ad libitum monthly stool collections during the 1980–81 breeding season of birds maintained in an artificial insemination (AI) project. Since active male gonads are known to secrete a preponderance of androgens into the peripheral circulation and that renal clearance filters steroid metabolites into the urine, it was reasonable to assume that a lowered excretory E/T profile would mimic major changes in male seasonal steroidogenesis; analogously, active female gonads would result in an increased excretion of urinary estrogens, in turn reflected by a seasonal elevation of E/T ratios. A serial profile of excretory E/T ratio data for two male bald eagles approximated unity values except for a midseason low (x < 0.4) in February, one month prior to semen collections, followed by a significant end-of-breeding season rise in E/T values (x > 2.5, P < 0.01). The average E/T profile from data of two female eagles were two- to sixfold higher than males except for a significant mid-breeding season peak in E/T values during March (x > 13.5, P < 0.01). Despite the absence of nest building or egg production by either female, these preliminary observational data indicated seasonal patterns of gonadal activity in both female eagles that were synchronous with semen availability from adjacent males.  相似文献

Polymorphic microsatellite loci were identified in order to study golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) population fragmentation. Twenty‐six published Aquila and eight published Haliaeetus microsatellite loci were tested for polymorphism in A. chrysaetos. Fifteen loci were polymorphic with between two and six alleles detected per locus. Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.15 to 0.77 among 177 unrelated individuals from Scotland. There was no evidence for null alleles. Two pairs of loci (Hal‐10 & Aa15 and Hal‐10 & Aa26) displayed linkage disequilibrium.  相似文献

We report the development of 14 novel polymorphic microsatellite markers cloned from the White‐tailed Sea Eagle, Haliaeetus albicilla, a formerly threatened raptor that has received much conservation attention throughout Eurasia. We also present a protocol for multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the loci. Among 40 unrelated H. albicilla individuals from southern Sweden, the markers produced two to eight alleles per locus, and average observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.463 and 0.468, respectively. We further present five microsatellite markers that appeared monomorphic in H. albicilla, but which may be of interest for use in other raptor species.  相似文献

Most are facultative agamosperms, with males occurring, but males are probably lacking in G. mangostana . In G. mangostana and G. hombroniana , adventitious embryony occurs autonomously, and haploid parthenogenesis may also occur rarely. In G. parvifolia , it is reported previously that gametophytic agamospermy occurs, and adventitious embryos are suppressed. Autonomous endospermy is found in G. mangostana and G. parvifolia . In G. hombroniana , endosperm probably only develops after PEN fertilization. In G. hombroniana , some proembryos are formed precociously, and further proembryo formation is inhibited by sexual embryos. Asexual proembryos tend to occur in large ovules in small ovaries, and sexual embryos tend to occur in small ovules in large ovaries. It is considered that facultative agamospermy renders the genus Garcinia particularly suitable for the development of new types of fruit. Agamospermy in a dioecious genus, adventitious embryony in the absence of fertilization and/or pseudogamy, and the co-occurrence of gametophytic and sporophytic agamospermies in the same genus are unusual phenomena, which are discussed in the context of the lifestyle of a tropical forest tree. A pink-pigmented, facultative methylotrophic (PPFM) bacterium, Methylobacterium mesophilicum, which is found on the leaf surface of most plants, has been reported to be a covert contaminant of tissue cultures initiated from Glycine max (soybean) leaves and seeds by Holland and Polacco (1992). The bacteria can be detected as pink colonies when leaves are pressed or tissue culture homogenates are plated on a medium with methanol as the sole carbon source. Since the presence of contaminating bacteria can confound any biochemical results obtained with such cultures (Holland and Polacco 1992), we wanted to determine the extent of the contamination of our tissue cultures of soybean and other species. No PPFMs were detected in any soybean culture we have, and previous results describing the biochemical characteristics of ureide utilization by one of our soybean suspension cultures (27C) also indicates that PPFM bacteria were not present. Analysis of about 200 other strains of 11 different species maintained in this lab showed that only three of about 160 callus cultures, recently initiated from Datura innoxia leaves, contained PPFMs. The D. innoxia leaves did have PPFMs on their surface but in most cases they did not survive the surface disinfestation and culture regimes. Bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) are currently protected in the United States under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act of 1940 and Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Given these protections and the increasing development of wind energy throughout the United States, it is important for regulators and the wind industry to understand the risk of bald eagle collisions with wind turbines. Prior probability distributions for eagle exposure rates and collision rates have been developed for golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Given similar information has not been available for bald eagles, the current recommendation by the USFWS is to use the prior probability distributions developed using data collected on golden eagles to predict take for bald eagles. But some evidence suggests that bald and golden eagles may be at different risk for collision with wind turbines and the prior probability distributions developed for golden eagles may not be appropriate for bald eagles. We developed prior probability distributions using data collected at MidAmerican Energy Company's operating wind energy facilities in Iowa, USA, from December 2014 to March 2017 for bald eagle exposure rates and collision rates. The prior probability distribution for collision rate developed for bald eagles has a lower mean collision rate and less variability relative to that developed for golden eagles. We determined that the prior probability distributions specific to bald eagles from these operating facilities are a better starting point for predicting take for bald eagles at operating wind energy facilities in an agricultural landscape than those developed for golden eagles. © 2021 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

The relationships of eight extant species of sea eagles (genus Haliaeetus ) and some potentially related Accipitrid genera were investigated. A phylogenetic hypothesis is developed based on morphological characters and allozyme data, which is then contrasted with a reconstruction based on 1071 nucleotides of mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome b and part of one tRNA gene). Phylogenies derived from the three data sets are largely congruent, although several aspects are supported by only one kind of evidence (but not contradicted by the others). Only with regard to the position of south-east Asian H. leucogaster and its closely related sister species H. sanfordi was there conflict between allozyme and mtDNA data. The position of H. pelagicus relative to H. leucoryphus or H. albicilla/leucocephalus could not be resolved with the mtDNA sequence data, suggesting that some speciation events occurred in relatively quick succession during the early Pliocene or late Miocene periods. Available evidence suggests that extant sea eagles originated at tropical latitudes, the northernmost species appearing most derived.  相似文献

We isolated a total of 22 microsatellite loci from two Haliaeetus species: the Madagascar fish‐eagle (Haliaeetus vociferoides) and the bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). Five loci were monomorphic in both the Madagascar fish‐eagle (n = 24–43) and the bald eagle (n = 2–8) but were found to be polymorphic in other Haliaeetus species. Haliaeetus loci have proved useful for investigating gene flow in Haliaeetus and Aquila eagles. Ten loci were polymorphic in the critically endangered Madagascar fish‐eagle and will be used to investigate the genetic population structure and mating system in this species.  相似文献

The ability of selfishly spreading DNA sequences to invade host populations is intimately bound up with sex. In the absence of sexual reproduction, an element that lowers the fitness of its host and which is initially found in only some of the population will inevitably be lost by natural selection. This will occur even if the element can spread selfishly in the genomes of those individuals which initially possessed it. Here, we create a model in which such a gene is introduced into a population in which individuals sometimes reproduce sexually and sometimes asexually. The element can raise the level of sexuality in its bearers. There is selection against those individuals with the gene (i.e. it is selfish), and a further selective cost to sexual reproduction. The dynamics of the model that arises from these simple assumptions are remarkably complex, with fixation or loss of the selfish gene, unstable and stable equilibria, and effective neutrality all being possible dependent on the parameter values. A selfish gene that increases the level of sexuality of its bearers will tend to have a higher likelihood of invading a host population, and faster spread, but a lower likelihood of spreading to fixation, than an equivalent gene with no effect on sex.  相似文献

Raptor nests on human-built structures represent a significant source of conflict, as they can result in bird mortality, fires, or power outages due to falling nest materials or animals connecting with energized conductors. Power companies typically try to mitigate these conflicts to avoid service disruptions. Performing mitigation measures across all potentially problematic power infrastructure is generally not a practical solution given logistical, time, or budgetary constraints. Therefore, there is a need for quantitative, landscape-scale tools to identify conflict risk and prioritize mitigation. We examined the influence of habitat and transmission infrastructure distribution on the potential risk of osprey (Pandion haliaetus) nesting-infrastructure conflict in the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) power service area within Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Virginia, USA, using osprey nesting and conflict records from 1990–2020. We modeled risk using a 3-stage approach, which intersected a nesting habitat suitability model and density of infrastructure to evaluate the potential risk of conflict. Habitat suitability was greater on or near open water and closer to developed areas. Transmission line density was low (0.14 ± 0.29 lines/km2) and heterogenous across the service area with more lines within urban centers and near power facilities. Integrating habitat suitability and transmission infrastructure information revealed that very low and low-risk areas comprised 99% of the service area. Less than 1% comprised 1,113.7 km2 of moderate and 82.2 km2 of high or very high risk, mostly concentrated along major rivers and lakes, and around urban centers. Risk was more prevalent in the northeastern portion of the service area. This work presents a top-down approach to mitigating osprey–power infrastructure conflict, which allows for the prioritization of mitigation actions and can facilitate long-term coexistence with this protected species.  相似文献
