This study determined prey consumption in common sole as a function of prey size (0–0.5, 1–1.5, 2–2.5 and 4–5 g), sediment thickness (20 cm and 2 cm) and fish size (50 g, 125 g or 300 g). Prey consumption (in numbers of prey eaten per fish per day) was reduced with increasing prey size and sediment thickness, and was increased with increasing fish size (< .001 for all factors). All 3 factors showed significant two way interactions (< .001) when expressed in numbers of prey eaten. Prey consumption decreased with prey size when prey could not escape by burying (2 cm of sediment thickness) irrespective of fish size. We suggest that increasing effort to ingest and handle larger prey played a role. Prey consumption increased with fish size when prey could not bury (2 cm of sediment thickness). However, when prey was able to bury (at 20 cm sediment thickness) prey consumption was similar irrespective of fish size (< .001 for interaction fish size × sediment). This interaction suggests that with increasing fish size there is an increasing mismatch between foraging adaptation and prey burial depth. This may explain the dominance of crustaceans in the diet of adult common sole in nature, despite the high abundance of polychaetes.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to test different mussel meal (MM) dietary levels in combination with fishmeal (FM) on the growth performance, fatty acid composition and liver histology of common sole, Solea solea juveniles to highlight the growth potential of this species. Four isoproteic (53%) and isolipidic (11%) pelletized diets were formulated to contain graded levels of mussel meal, MM0 (0%), MM25 (25%), MM50 (50%) and MM75 (75%), up to 75%. Sole juveniles (initial individual mean body weight 13.1 ± 2.3 g, n = 840) were fed to satiation for 91 days. Seventy fish per tank (500‐L, 0.64 m2 bottom surface) were reared in 12 tanks (3 tanks per treatment) at 20 ± 1°C. Diets containing MM (MM25, MM50 and MM75) gave a significantly higher specific growth rate (SGR, 1.27 ± 0.01, 1.38 ± 0.06 and 1.40 ± 0.05, respectively), higher feed intake and lower feed conversion rate (FCR, 1.09 ± 0.01, 1.00 ± 0.04 and 0.98 ± 0.02, respectively) when compared to the FM‐based diet (MM0, SGR, 0.98 ± 0.11, FCR, 1.52 ± 0.13). Carcass proximate composition was not influenced by dietary treatments, with the exception of the significantly lower lipid content in the MM75 group. Protein efficiency ratio (PER) and gross protein efficiency (GPE) were significantly improved by the mussel meal inclusion (PER, 1.29 ± 0.12, 1.76 ± 0.01, 1.89 ± 0.06, 1.95 ± 0.08; GPE, 25.29 ± 1.85, 33.38 ± 0.89, 35.96 ± 1.36, 36.59 ± 1.05 in MM0, MM25, MM50 and MM75, respectively). A significant decrease in the viscerosomatic index was observed in fish fed with MM50 and MM75 in comparison to MM0. The hepatosomatic index of fish fed with MM0 and MM25 was higher than that of fish fed with MM75, although the histological examination of liver parenchyma in all experimental groups showed a uniformly abundant accumulation of lipid droplets. Carcass fatty acid composition was significantly affected by dietary treatments, reflecting the dietary fatty acid profile. According to these results, the inclusion of MM in experimental FM‐based diets improved the performance and feed utilization of common sole juveniles. The inclusion of MM in the present trial allowed a higher SGR than that registered in previous growth trials on common sole. This study could provide useful information to detect effective ingredients for practical diets in Solea solea. It also seems advisable to consider an inclusion of at least 25% MM in the experimental reference diet to be used for further application towards the development of specific diets for this species.  相似文献

A new species of caligid copepod, Caligus solea n. sp., is described from the common sole Solea solea (Linnaeus) caught off the north-eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Both sexes of the parasite were collected from all over the upper body surface of its host. The new species belongs to the macarovi-group of species as established by Boxshall & Gurney (Bull Br Mus (Nat Hist) (Zool), 39:161–178, 1980), with which it shares the following four characters: (i) leg 4 with two-segmented exopod, distal segment carrying three apical spines but no lateral spine; (ii) distal exopodal segment of leg 1 with three plumose setae posteriorly plus four distal margin elements, spine 1 naked, spines 2 and 3 with accessory process and spine 4 about twice length of the others; (iii) females with one-segmented abdomen while males with two-segmented abdomen; (iv) male maxilliped with myxal process opposing the tip of the subchela. However, the new species differs from its congeners within the macarovi-group in the number of sensillae on each papilla on and around the postantennal process, and also in the absence of serrations along the distal margin of the maxilla. This is the twenty-eighth species of Caligus to be reported from the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

Three diets were compared for the feeding of captive common sole broodstock (Solea solea) kept under ambient photoperiod and temperature conditions. A group of 70 adults were caught in the wild and the 38 males and 32 females distributed at random in six tanks. All the fish were acclimated to the same semi-moist diet (M) in the pre-experimental period from December to February. Three dietary treatments were offered in the experimental period from March to May with two replicates (tanks) per treatment. The treatments were M alone, M supplemented with fresh mussels (Mytilus edulis) (M+M), and M supplemented with live polychaetes (Perinereis cultrifera) (M+P). Spawning occurred during April and May when water temperature was 17 and 18 degrees C, respectively, and salinity around 34-35ppt. Average daily dry matter intake expressed as a proportion of body weight was M 0.65+/-0.34%, M+M 0.43+/-0.18%, and M+P 0.56+/-0.27%, and differed significantly (P<0.05) between treatments. The average daily dry matter intake within a tank ranged from 0.31+/-0.04% in February to 0.98+/-0.26% in May (P<0.05), apparently due to changes in the photo-thermal regime. Diet significantly affected the number of days when spawning occurred, the number of days when hatched eggs were produced, and the proportion of fertilized eggs (P<0.05); and affected the number of days on which viable eggs were produced during April (NS). In all cases, the results were lowest for M+M, while those for the other two treatments did not differ significantly. Differences in hatching rate were not significant in April. During May, no spawning occurred in fish given the M+M treatment, and the differences between the other two treatments were not significant. Values for all variates tended to be higher for M+P than M+M in April and lower for M+P and M in May. These results suggest that supplementing the semi-moist diet with mussels depressed feed intake and, consequently, reproductive performance; the semi-moist diet alone and semi-moist diet supplemented with polychaetes allowed satisfactory food intake and reproductive performance in broodstock sole.  相似文献

There is increasing interest in the common sole, Solea solea (Linnaeus), as an alternative fish species in aquaculture in the Mediterranean region, and parasitic copepods are a potential hazard for farmed finfish. This paper provides taxonomic information on two species of sea lice (family Caligidae) collected from S. solea in eastern Mediterranean waters off the Turkish coast. Caligus brevicaudatus A. Scott, 1901 and Caligus apodus (Brian, 1924) were both found and this is the first report of C. brevicaudatus in Turkish waters. The discovery of C. apodus on S. solea is a new host record. Key diagnostic characters of both species are reported, supported by light and scanning electron microscopy observations. During a 12-month survey a prevalence of 28% was recorded for C. brevicaudatus, whereas for C. apodus peak prevalence was much lower (3%).  相似文献

Ventilation frequency (FV) in motionless common sole Solea solea was measured before and after a startling stimulus in normoxia and in hypoxia (15% air saturation). Startling reduced FV in normoxia (from mean ±s.e. 41 ± 3·3 beats min?1 to near zero, i.e. 2·0 ± 1·8 beats min?1) and in hypoxia (from mean ±s.e. 80 ± 4·4 to 58·8 ± 12·9 beats min?1). It is suggested that the maintenance of high FV in hypoxia may increase the probability of detection by predators compared to normoxia.  相似文献

Habitat specific growth rates and condition indices were estimated for Solea solea and Solea senegalensis, in two nursery areas within the Tagus estuary, at the end of the estuarine colonization process, in 2005. While in the uppermost nursery area the two species of sole live in sympatry, in the lower nursery only S. senegalensis is present. Daily increments of left lapillar otoliths were used to estimate age (in days) and determine growth rates (mm per day). Condition indices were assessed through RNA‐DNA ratio in muscle samples. Growth rates were higher for S. senegalensis (0.970and 1.180 mm per day in nursery A and B, respectively) than for S. solea (0.767 mm per day in nursery A). Growth rates of S. senegalensis from the uppermost nursery area were lower when compared to those obtained for the other nursery. The RNA/DNA condition index followed the general trend given by the growth rate estimates, i.e. values were higher for S. senegalensis than for S. solea. However, no significant differences were detected in S. senegalensis from the two nurseries. Larger variations in salinity (10‰ amplitude in the uppermost nursery vs 0.2‰ in the lower nursery) and highest pollution loads may be important factors lowering the habitat quality of the uppermost nursery in comparison to the lower nursery. The use of growth rate estimates based on otolith readings and the RNA/DNA index as tools for habitat quality assessment was discussed.  相似文献

The bacterial flora in the intestines of farmed Dover sole ( Solea solea L.) was investigated at different stages of fish development in relation to different diets fed under farming conditions. The flora of water and diets were also analyzed. The dominant generic group isolated from all water samples examined was Pseudomonas Gp IV/ Alcaligenes. The same generic group was dominant in homogenized pelagic larvae indicating a relationship between the microflora of those young fish and that of tank water. In older fish a steady increase in the percentage incidence of Vibrio / anaerogenic Aeromonas was observed in the intestines as fish grew and diets changed. The Vibrio /anaerogenic Aeromonas group was dominant in Lumbricillus rivalis used as an intermediate diet and the increased incidence of this group in fish intestines occurred after fish were fed this diet. The composite pellet used for ongrowing carried a high percentage of Gram positive micro-organisms and there was no relationship between the pellet microflora and that found in the fish intestines.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine the age and some growth characteristics of Atlantic stargazer (Uranoscopus scaber) from Iskenderun Bay (Northeastern Mediterranean). For this purpose, a total of 150 Atlantic stargazer ranging in size from 9.1 to 28.0 cm in total length (weight: 11.7–345.7 g) were collected as by-catch from a commercial trawl fishing boat at a depth of 80–100 m between May 2015 and January 2016. The bottom trawl gear used was equipped with a 44 mm stretched mesh size net at the cod-end. The percentage of females and males were 46.7% and 53.3% respectively. The total length–weight relationships equation with coefficient of determination (R2) were found as W = 0.011*TL3.131, R2 = .9728, for all individuals, W = 0.015*TL3.021, R2 = .9512 for females and W = 0.0102*TL3.136, R2 = .9553 for males. By using the von Bertalanffy equation, the growth parameters of Atlantic stargazer were estimated to be L = 42.35 cm, k = 0.098, t0 = −1.8474 for all individuals; L = 36.92 cm, k = 0.138, t0 = −1.2693 for females and L = 38.77 cm, k = 0.1, t0 = −2.334 for males. In this study, age reading was done by two independent readers and index of average percentage error (IAPE) was calculated as 6.1%. The highest condition factor value calculated as 1.81 in the age group 6 and the lowest condition factor value was calculated as 1.48 in the age group 1.  相似文献

Observations have been made on the hatching behaviour of the larva of the monogenean Entobdella soleae and on the effects of various enzymes on the opercular cement of the egg. These observations indicate that hatching is brought about by a proteolytic hatching fluid which is produced by two pairs of ventral head glands and spread over the inner surface of the opercular joint by rotation of the larva about its longitudinal axis. After hatching there is no trace of the ventral head glands. Similar glands are present before hatching in the oncomiracidium of E. hippoglossi.  相似文献

The life history of two Soleidae, the common sole, Solea solea, and the thickback sole, Microchirus variegatus, were compared in the Bay of Biscay in an attempt to set out factors which could explain settlement styles known to be different between juveniles of each species. Common sole juveniles had been shown to depend on coastal and estuarine nurseries, and the thickback sole to develop in open-sea nurseries, although the spawning grounds and spawning season of both species overlapped (offshore and at springtime, respectively). For this study, data on adult, juvenile and larva distributions were obtained from cruises carried out in the Bay of Biscay during the last decade. In addition, growth rate of larvae and planktonic interval duration, estimated by means of otolith increment analysis, were compared, as well as literature-derived information on behaviour of larvae. By comparing larval features, it appeared that thickback sole did not obtain the advantage of a slightly longer pelagic life span for an increased dispersal, due to an early shift to benthic behaviour. Other evidence was given by more specifically stated distributions that the further and deeper offshore spawning of M. variegatus, compared to S. solea, was a likely key-factor of the juvenile settlement process. This could explain why the thickback sole, contrary to the common sole, never reach coastal areas and thus settle offshore, in waters deeper than 30 m.  相似文献

A habitat selection experiment was conducted to examine the behavioural response of sole Solea solea to a combination of sediment quality (exopolysaccharides, EPS-free, i.e. 0 mg l−1 and EPS-rich, i.e. 4 mg l−1) and water oxygenation level (100 and 35% air saturation). The distribution of sole was influenced differently by the type of substratum depending on the water oxygenation level. In normoxia, sole settled preferentially on sand whereas under hypoxic conditions, sole settled preferentially on the muddy substratum. In order to explain these apparently counter-intuitive observations, it is proposed that, via cutaneous respiration, young sole are able to take advantage of the large quantities of oxygen produced by microphytobenthic organisms present in the upper few millimetres of muddy substratum.  相似文献

Historical otolith collections are crucial in assessing the evolutionary consequences of natural and anthropogenic changes on the demography and connectivity of commercially important fish species. Hence, it is important to define optimal protocols for purifying DNA from such valuable information sources while avoiding any damage to the physical structure of the otolith. Before being able to conclude on the harmlessness of a method, it is important to validate protocols on different kinds of otoliths by testing purification methodologies under standardized conditions. Here we compare the effect of two DNA extraction methods on the success in identifying the age in an overexploited marine fish, the common sole (Solea solea L.). To ensure optimal future population genetic and demographic analyses, we assessed DNA quantity and tested the DNA quality by investigating the amplification success of a mitochondrial and nuclear marker. Our results show that the choice of the DNA extraction method had a significant effect on the success of using these otoliths in age and growth analyses. Standard commercial and published protocols resulted in a severe damaging of the otolith structure, hampering accurate preparation and analyses of the morphological structures of the otoliths. Shortening the lysis time and lowering the EDTA (ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid) and SDS (sodium dodecylsulphate) concentration turned out to be beneficial for the stability of otolith structure, while maintaining an overall high DNA quality measured through polymerase chain reaction amplification success. We therefore recommend that care should be taken when choosing the extraction method for a molecular study on archived samples, in order to enable the maximal use of information embedded in historical material.  相似文献

Juvenile Dover sole, Solea solea , were weaned from a live food, Artemia salina nauplii, on to a casein-based particulate diet flavoured with flesh of the mussel, Mytilus edulis . These fish would not accept an unflavoured casein-based diet but readily ate the diet flavoured with either mussel flesh or a mixture of pure chemicals whose composition was based on an analysis of the low-molecular weight fraction of mussel flesh. The rate of growth and survival over a seventy-seven day period was essentially the same on either of the flavoured diets. The active constituent in the mixture of pure chemicals was identified as glycine betaine for fish of wet weight exceeding 50g while glycine betaine with certain L-amino-acids was required for fish of about 2.5 g wet weight. These results are discussed in relation to the known feeding behaviour and food preferences of the wild Dover sole.  相似文献

In the last decades there have been several evidences that traditionally used live preys like rotifers and Artemia salina have nutritional deficiencies that result in a general decrease of fish health, causing anomalies in the development, in growth and in pigmentation. In this study a partial of total replacement of traditional live preys with preserved copepods that represent the natural food of the larvae was evaluated during Solea solea culture. In this study a positive effect of co-feeding preserved copepods in sole larviculture was observed since larvae fed this diet growth and survived better, showed a better tolerance to captive conditions and had a better response to the final thermal/density stress-test with respect to larvae fed a traditional diet. Morphometric data were fully supported by molecular and biochemical ones. Moreover, liver histological investigations, revealed that the inclusion of preserved copepods in the larval diet was able to improve lipid assimilation. In conclusion, preserved copepods may be considered a suitable food for sole when used as a supplement to the traditional diet based on rotifers and Artemia nauplii.  相似文献

The gastrointestinal tracts of adult and juvenile Dover sole, Solea solea (L.), were examined using scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). SEM showed little differentiation of the internal morphology of the gastrointestinal tract in adult fish, with longitudinally arranged mucosal folds present in all gut regions. Mucosal folds had a similar arrangement to that in the goldfish. Goblet cells were identified in the mucosal epithelium in all regions of the gut while microscopic ducts/pores of possible pancreatic origin were observed in the foregut region. SEM of juvenile gut samples showed a similar arrangement of longitudinal mucosal folds to that found in the adult fish. There was no visible evidence of goblet cells or secretory ducts/pores in any region of the juvenile gastrointestinal tract.
In TEM it was observed that apical microvilli were a feature of epithelial cells from all regions of the gastrointestinal tract in adult and juvenile Dover sole. Cells from the distal regions of the adult and juvenile gut showed invaginations and vacuolation of the apical cytoplasm. A high degree of vacuolation in cells from the juvenile hindgut-rectum indicated the possible occurrence of intracellular digestion of absorbed nutrients in this gut region.  相似文献

Solea solea start to appear in the Tamar Estuary in April–May when they are 10 mm long. The majority of young sole move into the estuary in June–July. Most sole leave the estuary towards the end of their second year in October–November, when they have reached a total length of 150–200 mm. The young O-group fish remain in the main channel, whereas the I-group move with the tide onto the mud-flats.
Approximately 7000 fish were marked by freeze-branding or dye-injection. The recaptures showed that there was an up-estuary migration in May–June. Most of the recaptures were taken at the site of original capture and there was only a limited movement of fish between adjacent mud-flat areas. Average growth rate tends to be greater in sole inhabiting the upper reaches of the estuary.  相似文献
