Ecology of muskoxen in Jameson Land, northeast Greenland   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Muskoxen Ovibos moschatus in Jameson Land exist at a density of somewhat more than 1 km−2 of useable habitat and select moist meadows and snow bed vegetation for summer grazing and wind-exposed, dry dwarf shrub heath vegetation in winter. Graminoids dominate the winter diet and willows are the main component of the summer diet. Quality of the winter diet, as measured by the protein to fiber ratio is about one fourth that of the summer diet. During summer muskoxen supplement dietary sodium by using mineral licks. Muskoxen, especially females, retain considerable unused fat reserves through the winter and these are drawn upon during the post-calving period of lactation. Alternate year breeding is a common occurrence. Calves are frequently not weaned before the end of their first winter. Mean calf mortality is relatively low in the absence of significant predation and annual removal by hunting Inuits approaches the annual increment.  相似文献

Endogenous reserves influence both survival and reproduction of many waterfowl species, but little is known about reserve levels of most species during the nonbreeding season, particularly those wintering at high latitudes. We investigated whether age, sex, and season were related to carcass composition of northern common eiders (Somateria mollissima borealis) wintering in southwest Greenland during 1999–2002. Adults carried more lipid and protein than juveniles during all winters. Among both age classes, males and females had similar fat levels but males carried slightly more protein. There was no dramatic seasonal variation in lipid or protein content. This suggests that during the period of this study, these eiders did not experience large-scale nutritional shortfalls. As predicted, Greenlandic eiders carried more lipid reserves than eider populations wintering in more temperate environments. Contrary to prediction, there was little relation between reserve levels and photoperiod, ambient temperature, or hunting disturbance intensity. Our results suggest that both sexes are equally capable of dealing with nutritional deficits, and that juvenile birds are more prone to nutritional stress as evidenced by their consistently poorer body condition.  相似文献

Muskoxen are large herbivores living in Arctic environments. Lack of genetic variation in allozymes has made it difficult to study the social and genetic structure of this species. In this study, we have tried to find polymorphic microsatellite loci using both cattle-derived microsatellite primers and primers developed from a genomic plasmid library of muskoxen. Only limited variation was found for both sets of microsatellite loci. We conclude that this consistent low genetic variation is probably due to demographic features of the muskoxen populations rather than to methodological constraints caused by the transfer of microsatellites between species.  相似文献

Pheidologeton diversus workers group-hunt (that is, search for food in raiding groups) and are in this way remarkably convergent with army ants (Dorylinae and Ecitoninae). Raids appear usually to take independent courses and are capable of tracking areas of high food density. However, raid advance is not dependent on continual food discovery at the raid front, since raids can advance over areas without food. Most raids extend from trunk trails, which originate when the basal trail of a raid remains in use even after the original raid has ceased. Trunk trails can last at least as long as 10 weeks, with the terrain and the distance to the nest influencing the trail stability. Territories are limited to the trail systems, with rich food items in particular being vigorously defended. Group hunting permits P. diversus to quickly harvest booty, usurp foods from competing species, and capture large prey. This strategy is compared with the raiding strategies of other ants. I hypothesize that group hunting originated from an ancestor which hunted solitarily from trunk trails through the acceleration of trail production and reduction in worker autonomy.  相似文献

The characteristics of the present tree-line in continental Northern Quebec appear to be related to modern and past ecological conditions. 14C dating of fossil trees and charcoal, and age structure of tree populations are used as evidence of tree-line dynamics over the last 400 yr. As inferred from the reproductive strategies of the two tree species, black spruce Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP, and Tamarack Larix laricina (DuRoi) K. Koch, forming the present tree-line populations, major changes during postglacial time in Northern Quebec are not only concerned with tree-line position, but also with tree-line composition. The present tree-line is made by larch (or tamarack) and corresponds to its natural seed regeneration limit. Black spruce probably reached its northernmost holocene latitudes during a warmer period and it then formed the tree-line. During the Little Ice Age, fires destroyed large tracks of forest and black spruce krummholz (400, and 250–200 yr ago); afterwards, tree species reestablished only in protected sites, and exposed sites were not reseeded. At some places, fires did not burn completely the forest cover, and preserved isolated trees and small groves probably became locus of reafforestation. Differential forest regeneration and tree age structure suggest that fire and climate are intimately associated in controlling tree population dynamics. Favourable and less favourable forest regeneration periods are inferred from these data and it is suggested that tree-line displacements in Northern Quebec during the last 400 yr were less important than in the Northwest Territories.  相似文献

Northern bats foraged predominantly in small individual and transient feeding sites usually in open places near trees and over water. Lakes were preferred as foraging habitat as compared to woodlands and farmlands. The pattern of habitat selection did not change drastically during the period of reproduction. The diet was probably unselective, consisting mainly of small dipterans and moths and also caddis flies, lacewings and mayflies (lake area) and dung beetles (farmland). Northern bats consumed insects of 3–30 mm body length, thus taking prey items of a broader size range than other bat species studied.  相似文献

Increasing hunting pressure in Greenland demands improved knowledge on muskox (Ovibos moschatus) biology in general, and movement and grouping behaviour in particular, to ensure their proper management. Improving the exchange of information between hunters and managers is also necessary. Muskox site fidelity and group cohesion was examined over a 16-year period using 477 earmarked individuals tagged in 1982 and 1983. Combining information from scientists and hunters, observations of live individuals were primarily made from 1983 to 1990, while the latest tagged muskoxen reported shot were from 1998. Muskoxen in this area had a very loose group structure, with mother-young pairs as the only apparent bond between individuals. Furthermore, the tagged muskoxen lacked strong fidelity to the site where they were tagged and roamed within an 11,000-km2 area. Hunters reported tagged muskoxen shot up to 120 km away from the capture site. From the hunters reports, we determined that the central part of Jameson Land around Mikael Bjerg was the preferred hunting area in winter. In summer, most muskoxen were shot near the coast of the central part of Jameson Land. The hunter compliance in this study confirms that such cooperation can provide important information for management related to muskox harvesting and monitoring.  相似文献

This paper presents an analysis of the foraging ecologies and hence means of partitioning resources amongst the twenty-eight most conspicuous species of birds in lowland tropical rainforest at Lacey's Creek, North Queensland. The height and site of foraging and the type of behaviour used by the species were compared. The height at which species foraged appeared to be more important for separating species than the site of foraging or the behaviour used. There appeared to be a greater proportion of species with generalized foraging behaviour at Lacey's Creek than in bird communities in the neotropics. Frugivorous species had very similar foraging ecologies but there were differences in the species of fruit eaten by some species. There were seasonal shifts in foraging by some species. It is postulated that the relative shortage of terrestrial species at Lacey's Creek compared with highland forest in North Queensland is due to the harsh dry season in the lowlands. The structure of this bird community appeared to be strongly affected by seasonality of climate.  相似文献

The alliance Caricion bicolori-atrofuscae comprises plant communities of more or less wet calcareous fens on shallow peat with a high base saturation, occurring in arctic as well as alpine, more seldom subalpine areas. The characteristic species are presented and compared with those from communities of the Caricion lavallianae growing in lowland and mountain sites of temperate and boreal calcareous fens.An abbreviated ecological characteristic is given and the contact communities of the different community complexes are pointed out. The regional floristic differences within the communities are shown, and the geographical distribution and regional frequency of the differentiated associations are given. The synsystematic ranks of three central European mountain to alpine associations are discussed in detail (Caricetum frigidae, Juncetum alpini, Equiseto-Typhetum minimi). They should be excluded from this alliance.Generally, the alpine phytocoenoses are more often invaded by species from neighbouring communities, presumably as an effect of competition in sites less favouring fen development in comparison to the oro-arctic and arctic sites, especially those with an oceanic to suboceanic climate.We conclude, that the observed floristic differences are mainly caused by historical processes and not by the different ecology of the sites in question. This must be taken into consideration when discussing the synsystematic delimitation and rank of the corresponding communities.Nomenclature follows: Lid (1974), Nyholm (1954–68). Acknowledgement. The foraging, nesting and roosting habitats of the avian fauna of a newly created Agmon wetland and surrounding cultivated peat land (5 km2) in the Hula Valley, northern Israel, were evaluated (January 1996–February 1997) to assess the value as a habitat and for wildlife tourism. We recorded 180 bird species (herons, dabbling ducks, kingfishers, waders, wagtails and raptors) in different habitats (the lake, shores, cattail and reed-bed stands, trees, temporary inundated areas). The most heavily used habitat for foraging, breeding, and roosting was a large cattail stand in the southern third of the lake. The foraging habitat and diet data of 97 avian species were determined. The most intensively used foraging habitats were cultivated fields, lake shore reed-beds, shallow canals and the cattail stand. Forty six species nested in the wetland during March-October, with 2,040 colonial and solitary nests mostly in the cattail stand, near-shore reed-beds and young trees. Roosts, also mostly in the cattail and reed-bed stands and in trees, were used by 55 species. Based on this survey of available habitats, we identified several key habitats that are either missing or require further development (e.g., temporarily inundated mud flats, reed-beds and bare islands). We also provide suggestions for improving the delicate balance between requirements of this developing wetland ecosystem and of the adjacent agricultural areas.  相似文献

The association between the distribution of blue-footed boobies Sula nebouxii (BFB) and marine productivity around their breeding grounds is unclear. In Peru, they breed in a region seasonally influenced by the cold, nutrient rich Humboldt Current, and by warm, nutrient poor oceanic waters. The foraging range of BFB in Peru is unknown, although some evidence suggest that they may feed in warm offshore waters. During the austral winter 2002 and summer 2003, we tracked 26 BFBs breeding on Isla Lobos de Tierra, Peru (located approximately 15 km west of the mainland), during 59 feeding trips using small direction recorders to determine their marine habitat use. BFBs preferentially moved to the east of the island and foraged over the continental shelf in cold water masses where marine productivity and the abundance of the main prey, the Peruvian anchovy Engraulis ringens , are usually higher than in other areas. Overall, the median maximum foraging distance from the colony was 39 km (range 3–109 km), with 90% of all trips located within 30 km from the mainland, and enclosed in an area of 13,113 km2. These results reveal that BFBs exploit the productive waters of the Peruvian Coastal Upwelling System, rather than open oceanic waters as previously suggested. BFBs travelled a greater distance, dispersed in a broader area, and visited more offshore waters during the winter 2002, than during the summer 2003, following the typical seasonal horizontal dispersion of the Peruvian anchovy.  相似文献

Niche differentiation through resource partitioning is seen as one of the most important mechanisms of diversity maintenance contributing to stable coexistence of different species within communities. In this study, I examined whether four species of migrating shorebirds, dunlins (Calidris alpina), semipalmated sandpipers (Calidris pusilla), least sandpipers (Calidris minutilla) and short-billed dowitchers (Limnodromus griseus), segregate by time of passage, habitat use and foraging behavior at their major stopover in Delaware Bay during spring migration. I tested the prediction that most of the separation between morphologically similar species will be achieved by differential migration timing. Despite the high level of overlap along observed niche dimensions, this study demonstrates a certain level of ecological separation between migrating shorebirds. The results of analyses suggest that differential timing of spring migration might be the most important dimension along which shorebird species segregate while at stopover in Delaware Bay. Besides differences in time of passage, species exhibited differences in habitat use, particularly least sandpipers that foraged in vegetated areas of tidal marshes more frequently than other species, as well as short-billed dowitchers that foraged in deeper water more often than small sandpipers did. Partitioning along foraging techniques was less prominent than segregation along temporal or microhabitat dimensions. Such ranking of niche dimensions emphasizes significance of temporal segregation of migratory species – separation of species by time of passage may reduce the opportunity for interspecific aggressive encounters, which in turn can have positive effects on birds' time and energy budget during stopover period.  相似文献

The quality of water in aquatic systems is subject to temporal and spatial variations due to varying effects of natural and anthropogenic factors. This study assessed the dynamics of water quality in the Boro-Thamalakane-Boteti river system along an upstream–downstream gradient above and below Maun during February, May, September and December 2012. Temperature, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, Escherichia coli and faecal streptococci were monitored in the settlements of Boro, Maun, Xobe, Samedupi, Chanoga and Motopi along the river system. Comparisons of water quality among settlements using ANOVA and Tukey's honest significant difference test highlighted a significant decline in water quality from upstream to downstream, indicated by increases in microbial numbers and turbidity. The quality of water improved as the water level rose during the peak flooding season in September and declined thereafter. This study highlights the possible influence of human settlements and associated developments on waterbodies, and lends strong support to management efforts to maintain river water quality to ensure the suitability of the water for various ecosystem uses.  相似文献

Total concentrations of algal pigments, organic C, C, N, P and S were determined in surface sediments from the littoral zone of 21 lakes in ice-free areas of northern Victoria Land (Antarctica) with different climatic and environmental conditions. Concentrations of major ions and nutrients were also determined in water samples from the same lakes. The latter samples had extremely variable chemical compositions; however, all the lakes resulted oligotrophic. Pigment concentrations in surface sediments were comparable to those reported for other Antarctic lakes and lower than those in oligotrophic lakes at lower latitudes. Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta were the main taxa identified. These taxa correspond to those reported in previous microscopy-based studies on Antarctic phytoplankton and phytobenthos. Discriminant Function Analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis of data indicate that the distribution of pigments in these Victoria Land lakes depends mainly on their geographical location (particularly the distance from the sea) and nutrient status.  相似文献

Topographic conditions play an important role in controlling land cover dynamic processes.In this study,remotely sensed data and the geographic information system were applied to analyze the changes in land cover along topographic gradients from 1978 to 2001 in Beijing,a rapidly urbanized mega city in China.The study was based on five periods of land cover maps derived from remotely sensed data:Landsat MSS for 1978,Landsat TM for 1984,"1992,1996 and 2001,and the digital elevation model (DEM) derived from 1:250,000 topographic map.The whole area was divided into ten land cover types:conifer forest,broadleaf forest,mixed forest,shrub,brushwood,meadow,farmland,built-up,water body and bare land.The results are summarized as follows.(1) Shrub,forest,farmland and builtup consist of the main land cover types of the Beijing area.The most significant land cover change from 1978 to 2001 was the decrease of the farmland and expansion of the builtup area.Farmland decreased from 6354 to 3813 km2 in the 23 years,while the built-up area increased from 421 to 2642 km2.Meanwhile,the coverage of forest increased from 17.2% to 24.7% of the total area.The conversion matrix analysis indicated that the transformation of farmland to the built-up area was the most significant process and afforestation was the primary cause of the replacement of shrub to forest.(2) Topographic conditions are of great importance to the distribution of land cover types and the process of land cover changes.Elevation has an intensive impact on the distribution of land cover types.The area below 100 m mostly consists of farmland and built-up areas,while the area above 100 m is mainly covered by shrub and forest.Shrub has the maximum frequency in areas between 100 and 1000 m,while forest has dominance in areas above 800 m.According to the analysis of land cover changes in different ranges of elevation,the greatest change below 100 m was the process of urbanization.The process of the main land cover change occurred above 100 m was the transformation from shrub to forest.This result was consistent with the vertical change of natural vegetation distribution in Beijing.(3) Slope has a great influence on the distribution of land cover.Farmland and built-up areas are mostly distributed in fiat areas,while shrub and forest occupy steeper areas compared with other land cover types.Forest frequency increased with the increasing slope.Land cover changes differed from the slope gradients.In the plain area,the land cover change occurred as the result of urbanization.With the increasing of the slope gradient,afforestation,which converts shrub to forest,was the process of the primary land cover change.  相似文献

Topographic conditions play an important role in controlling land cover dynamic processes.
