The life‐history tactics of the stone loach Barbatula barbatula were studied in a Mediterranean‐type climate stream (Matarranya River) located in the Ebro River basin (north‐east Spain). Maximum observed ages were 2+ years in both sexes (1% of individuals), although only 0+ and 1+ year age groups were well represented. It is the lowest longevity reported for this species in its entire distribution. The seasonal growth period started in June and continued until November, but the pattern observed was different to northern populations. Barbatula barbatula in the Matarranya River was a multiple spawner, releasing small batches of oocytes between April and June. The fecundity of females was higher and the size of oocytes smaller in 1984 than in 1985. The relative fecundity (number of ripening and ripe oocytes g?1 of fish) was lower than in northern European populations. The role of the particular environmental conditions of a Mediterranean stream was discussed in relation to the life‐history tactics of B. barbatula.  相似文献

In this paper we report for the first time the results of histology of the golden loach (S. baltica) gonads (25 females and 8 males) and absolute fecundity of females from the Bug River during the reproductive season. The golden loach has an asynchronous ovary and spawns in batches. The absolute fecundity of the golden loach ranged from 1507 to 7220 eggs (3050±1377). We hypothesize that the golden loach spawns twice a year.  相似文献

Age, growth and reproduction of Cobitis paludica in a seasonal stream   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In the Iberian endemic loach Cobitis paludica , in a small seasonal tributary of the Guadalquivir River, 65–70% of the total growth in length occurred in the first year of life. The maximum ages observed were 3+ years in males and 4+ years in females. Both sexes matured at the beginning of their second year of life. There was a significant difference from 1: 1 in the overall sex ratio of 412 males to 674 females. Spawning began in late March and ended in July. Cobitis paludica is a multiple spawner that releases a minimum of two batches of eggs per female each year. Once spawning had started, however, there was no recruitment from the stock of transparent oocytes to the mature stock. The number of eggs decreased from the first batch to the second, but there was no significant difference in the mean egg diameter between batches. Compared with other populations of this species, the present population, from a low latitude, is characterized by a low number of age groups, fast growth, early maturity and high fecundity in multiple spawnings. These life-history characteristics are typical of species in unstable environments, where adult mortality is high, variable or unpredictable.  相似文献

Ontogenetic and spatial variability in microhabitat use of spined loach Cobitis taenia (Linnaeus), considered as one species for the purposes of this study, and stone loach Barbatula barbatula (Linnaeus) were examined in the River Great Ouse basin, England, using multivariate and habitat suitability methods, including a technique for handling spatial variation in collections of preference curves. Distinct ordinations of spined age classes and stone loach developmental stages, respectively, in canonical correspondence analysis of species × variables × samples relationships suggest that the two species occupy completely different microhabitats; however, young‐of‐the‐year spined loach occurred more often than expected with all developmental stages of stone loach except young larvae. Water velocity and filamentous algae were the most influential microhabitat variables, the latter decreasing in importance with increasing age of both fish species. Preferred water velocities generally decreased with age in spined loach and increased in stone loach, with substratum size generally increasing with fish age in both species. Spatial variation in microhabitat preferences was great in both species but less so in the spined loach, suggesting that limited plasticity in habitat use could account, at least in part, for the latter species’ limited distribution and abundance in the catchment. Preference curves for a species, if generated and verified for all life intervals and all seasons, could be used as a management tool for a given stream or sector of river basin. But preference curves should be generated for each location to ensure that river management decisions with regard habitat and species conservation consider local‐level species requirements. Thus, a multi‐(eco)species and multi‐scale approach is required in habitat suitability assessments.  相似文献

1. Discriminant factorial analysis (DFA) and artificial neural networks (ANN) were used to develop models of presence/absence for three species of small-bodied fish (minnow, Phoxinus phoxinus , gudgeon, Gobio gobio , and stone loach, Barbatula barbatula ).
2. Fish and ten environmental variables were sampled using point abundance sampling by electrofishing in the Ariège River (France) at 464 sampling points.
3. Using DFA, the percentage of correct assignments, expressed as the percentage of individuals correctly classified over the total number of examined individuals, was 62.5% for stone loach, 66.6% for gudgeon and 78% for minnow. With back-propagation of ANN, the recognition performance obtained after 500 iterations was: 82.1% for stone loach, 87.7% for gudgeon and 90.1% for minnow.

The toxicity of zinc sulphate and cadmium sulphate to stone loach Noemacheilus barbatulus was examined in an attempt to explain the distribution of the species in two polluted streams. Stone loach in hard water were more sensitive than rainbow trout to zinc, but much more resistant to cadmium. Their disappearance from the Willow Brook, Northants, in 1971–72 could be accounted for by zinc toxicity. A behavioural change, the loss of the instinct to hide during daylight, occurred in subsequently lethal concentrations of cadmium. The accumulation of cadmium in several tissues was also determined.  相似文献

To evaluate the reproductive cycle and fecundity of tucunaré ( Cichla kelberi Kullander & Ferreira, 2006), 697 specimens were captured in Três Marias Reservoir, São Francisco River, Brazil during 1994–1995 and 2005–2006. Reproductive activity was recorded throughout the sampling periods, with females exhibiting asynchronous oocyte development and multiple spawnings with a peak in September–October. Vitellogenic oocytes of the tucunaré were elliptical in shape with the longest diameter approximately 1230 μm and the shortest 700 μm, yolk globules with ellipsoid inclusions, lipid vesicles, small cortical alveoli and thin zona radiata (9.3 ± 2.0 μm thickness). Follicular cells were prisma-shaped (49.0 ± 16.4 μm) in the vegetative pole, progressively becoming cubic cells in the animal pole toward the micropyle. Histochemical analyses indicated the presence of mucosubstances in the outer zona radiata and follicular cells that could be contributors to egg adhesiveness. Batch fecundity ranged from 4450 to 13 900 oocytes for females 31.5–43.5 cm total length, respectively, and correlated to gonadal weight ( r 2 = 0.80) and body weight ( r 2 = 0.70). Mean relative fecundity was 10.6 vitellogenic oocytes per gram body weight. As tucunaré is an exotic piscivorous species well-adapted to the Três Marias Reservoir, the present work may be considered a contribution toward future strategies for population control.  相似文献

SUMMARY.
  • 1 In this highly productive chalk stream the stone loach, sampled by electrofishing over a 30 month period, had a high growth rate reaching a mean length of 65 mm in 1 year and 93 mm in 2 years. The fish were short-lived in contrast to most slow-growing populations in the U.K. and Finland with 11 group fish comprising 8.8% and III group fish only 1.1% of the total number.
  • 2 The loach were fractional spawners: a 75 mm female produced an estimated 10,620 eggs between late April and early August totalling 46% of the loach's initial weight.
  • 3 In March and April some small 0 group females contained only poorly developed eggs and up to 10% of 0 group fish may have failed to spawn.
  • 4 Amongst loach >52 mm in length in March and April there was an exponential relationship between absolute fecundity and fish length but no relationship between relative fecundity and length. There was. however, a relationship between fish length and both gonadosomatic index and maximum egg size, which may indicate that large fish began to spawn first.

This study was based on examination of 1476 barbels from a first-order stream located in the Guadalquivir River basin (38°N, 4°43'W). This stock comprised nine age groups of male and 11 of females. No growth was recorded between October and March, most occurring in April–June and, to a lesser extent, in July–September. A classification analysis revealed that this stock had the lowest growth rate of 37 different European barbel populations. Length–weight relationships were obtained for 12 barbel categories and used to estimate both condition and instantaneous growth rate. Relative condition (before and after subtracting gonad weight) was similar in both sexes and was affected by gonad growth and environmental summer conditions.
Spawning occurred during the second half of May (15 May is suggested as the birthday). Gonads began to develop in September (females) and in February (males). Males matured at between 7 and 9 cm fork length (f.l.) (2–4 years old) and females between 11 and 16 cm (6–7 years). The fecundity of this stock was represented by the formula F =6.07 10 4 f.l. (mm)3.0667. Larger and older fish showed a higher fecundity and bigger eggs. The overall sex ratio did not differ from 1:1.  相似文献

The feeding habits of the 0+ year class of two of the most common small fish species in the River Ouzel, Milton Keynes, stone loach, Noernacheilus bnrhafulus (L.), and bullhead, Coftus gobio L., are assessed throughout the first growing season and compared. Despite similarities in the diets of the two species, differences in feeding behaviour and in morphology, especially in gape, may serve to reduce interspecific competition by partitioning of food resources.  相似文献

Point abundance sampling, using electrofishing, for stone loach Barbatula barbatula in two habitats, riffle and pool, showed that there was no difference in density between the two habitats. The density of fish increased significantly (1·8 fold; P  < 0·001) when the substratum of small cobbles (128–256 mm) was removed and electrofishing repeated.  相似文献

Sexually mature female hake Merluccius merluccius with hydrated ovaries were sampled on a monthly basis in the Bay of Biscay, from May 1996 to October 1997 and from March to April 1998. The batch fecundity was positively related to total length. The relative batch fecundity ( F Brel) varied significantly among months and years, but not between areas, i.e. International Council for the Exploration of the Sea Divisions VIIIa and VIIIb within the Bay of Biscay. Two levels of F Brel were found in 1997: the highest between January and April (mean ± s . e . 167 ± 5 eggs g−1) and the lowest from May to October (112 ± 3 eggs g−1). Population condition factor and gonado-somatic indices ( I G) followed the expected trend in relation to the monthly changes in F Brel during 1997. The F Brel variation between years was 9% for 1996–1997 and 28% for 1997–1998, and the difference of the I G was c. 14 and 36%, respectively. Population relative egg production varied from a high value in January to March (985 eggs g−1) to a low egg production between April and October 1997 (445 eggs g−1).  相似文献

Opercular bones of 261 pike from the River Stour and 117 from the River Frome were used for age and back-calculated growth determinations. The annuli were laid down during late April and early May and most growth occurred between May and September. Pike growth in the two rivers was comparable with the fastest growth in other waters, though Frome pike grew slightly faster than Stour pike. Spawning occurred from the end of March into May. Elaboration of the ovaries commenced in September and was virtually completed by February, whereas the testes reached their maximum weight in October and maintained it until spawning. Immature pike had an annual cycle of condition reaching a maximum in May and a minimum during the winter. The gonad cycle affected the condition of mature females which had their minimum condition in mid-summer. The fecundity of Stour pike is expressed by the formula: log10 egg number =3.56 log10 fish length (mm) – 5.40. Approximately 75% of all Stour pike were sexually mature by age II and these fish were, on average, larger than immature pike of the same age. The most numerous items in the diet of pike were small cyprinids, 30–80 mm fork length, although pike over 700 mm long ate larger fish. Few salmonids appeared in the diet of either Frome or Stour pike. The percentage of empty stomachs was highest in Stour samples taken during the summer, shorter digestion times and longer feeding periods in this period are suggested as reasons for the apparent anomaly.  相似文献

The seasonal cycle of the cestode Proteocephalus sagittus (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) was studied for the first time in the stone loach Barbatula barbatula from the Hana River, Czech Republic. A total of 180 loaches were examined monthly from January to December 2001. The parasite occurred in loaches throughout the year but infection parameters differed significantly among seasons, with the highest values of prevalence and abundance from the late winter to the early summer. Parasite recruitment took place in the winter and early spring and the worms sexually matured in the late spring and early summer. In contrast to P. torulosus, the gravid worms of which laid eggs only at the end of the spring/beginning of the summer, gravid worms of P. sagittus were also found, although in low numbers, in the autumn and early winter. The rate of infection of loach with P. sagittus was neither dependent on the sex nor on the size of its fish host.  相似文献

Life-history traits of non-native black bullhead Ameiurus melas from an oxbow of the River Váh (near the city of Komárno), located in the middle Danube reaches (Slovakia) were investigated during 2006 and 2007, including samples from the pre-spawning (March–May), spawning (May–June), post-spawning (late June–August) and resting (September) periods. In total, 600 specimens were examined. The sex ratio oscillated close to 1 : 1. Females were found to mature at 98.6–120 mm SL (118–145.1 mm TL, compared to 171–254 mm TL in the native North American populations). Spawning took place in May and June, although the spawning period in 2007 was more protracted. Based on the analyses of annual gonadal cycle and oocyte size distribution, the black bullhead is considered a multiple spawner with asynchronous oocyte development and indeterminate fecundity. Absolute fecundity ranged from 1238 to 4755 (mean 2610), and relative fecundity from 36.2 to 154.3 (mean 56.1) oocytes g−1. The high flexibility in the life history of the black bullhead as demonstrated by its non-native populations, as well as its extreme tolerance and capability to live in systems with poor water quality, suggests that this species has a high potential to invade new areas and establish viable populations.  相似文献

The substrate preferences, growth rates and foraging efficiency of two small benthic fish species, juvenile burbot, Lota lota, and stone loach, Barbatula barbatula, were compared in combined outdoor mesocosm and indoor laboratory experiments. Both species preferred the same stony substrate when alone, but significant differences in habitat selection were found between the two species under food deprivation and competition conditions. In burbot, preference for the stony habitat was reinforced under food-deprivation conditions and became even stronger when a potential competitor, the stone loach, was present. In contrast, stone loach switched to the gravel substrate when either starving or in the presence of a heterospecific competitor. Growth rates and foraging efficiency of burbot were significantly highest in the stony substrate and decreased with finer substrates. In stone loach, neither growth rates nor foraging efficiency were significantly different among the different substrates. The results provide an example of habitat partitioning by means of different competition styles, with a stenoecious, dominant style of the burbot and an euryoecious, evasive style of stone loach allowing coexistence of two sympatric fish species by graded interactions at an individual level in the littoral zone of a large lake.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of three introduced Poeciliidae, Gambusia affinis holbrooki Baird and Girard, Xiphophorus helleri (Günther) and X. maculatus (Heckel) was studied over a 14-month period in Brisbane, Queensland. Photoperiod and water temperature determined the length of the breeding season in G. affinis , which produced up to nine broods between August and March, with the peak of reproductive activity in October. Fecundity was linearly related to body weight in G. affinis (mean fecundity = 22.78 ± 1.02, range = 3–108 offspring per brood).
Xiphophorus helleri bred from August to May, producing eight to nine broods, with peak reproductive activity from October to December. Fecundity was curvilinearly related to body weight (mean fecundity = 60.15 ± 3.8, range = 7–183 offspring per brood. Xiphophorus maculatus bred between September and March, producing five to six broods during the study period. Fecundity was linearly related to standard length (s.l.) (mean fecundity = 27.27 ± 2.4, range = 3–92 offspring per brood). Although the reproductive strategy of the three species differs, all have the capacity to build up large populations in south-eastern Queensland. Their present distributions and relative abundance are discussed.  相似文献

为分析鱼类繁殖期内繁殖力和卵径变化趋势, 研究于4—10月在沅水下游逐月采集180尾?(Hemiculter leucisculus), 分析81尾雌性成熟个体的繁殖力。研究结果表明: ?的性体指数在5、6月最高, 其次在7、8和9月, 在4和10月最低。绝对繁殖力平均值为(30116±19390)粒, 以10000—30000粒为主, 相对繁殖力的平均值为(650±324)粒/g, 以400—800粒/g为主。绝对繁殖力与体长、空壳重呈幂函数关系(P<0.05)。绝对繁殖力和相对繁殖力在5和6月最大, 7、8和9月次之, 在4和10月最小。不同月份成熟卵子的卵径无显著差异, 补充卵子的卵径在5和6月最大, 暗示5和6月分批繁殖次数较多。不同繁殖时期的分批繁殖力、繁殖次数不一样, 对评估种群的繁殖潜能具有重要的指导意义。比较不同水系繁殖力发现, 湖泊种群的个体繁殖力普遍大于河流种群, 沅水种群的个体繁殖力跟湖泊种群的相似, 可能与其具有类似湖泊的缓流水或静水生境有关。研究揭示了?的基本繁殖特征, 为渔业资源管理提供了基础数据资料。  相似文献
