Caulerpa spp. are clonal green marine algae which often act as invasive species when growing outside their native biogeographical borders. Over the two past decades, Caulerpa taxifolia has spread along the Mediterranean coast, presently occurring at 70 sites and covering nearly 3,000 ha of subtidal area. New genetic markers (microsatellites) have been developed to assess clonal structure and genetic diversity of recently established populations of the invasive species C. taxifolia and Caulerpa racemosa in comparison with populations of the native Caulerpa prolifera in the Mediterranean. Our results show that nine polymorphic markers have been developed for C. prolifera, seven for C. taxifolia, and three for C. racemosa. Genetic diversity in Caulerpa was assessed in two geographical scales: one at a population scale where 40 thalli units were collected from C. prolifera in Cala d’Or, Mallorca, Spain, and another at a species scale, where 30 sample units were analyzed for C. prolifera, 24 for C. taxifolia, and 24 for C. racemosa from different sites in the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Pacific Ocean. Number of alleles, expected heterozygosity, and marker amplification success are provided in each case.  相似文献

Alien plant species, such as Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea, that invade Mediterranean marine vegetated habitats can affect habitat structure. In turn, changes in habitat structure may affect the associated invertebrate assemblages, either through changes in habitat selection or as a result of altered predation efficiency. In order to test for effects of changes in habitat structure resulting from colonization by C. racemosa on prey availability for predators, the importance of amphipods as a trophic resource in natural vegetated habitat was first assessed, and later experiments were undertaken to assess the effects of the alien alga on predation by Thalassoma pavo of two dominant amphipods: Elasmopus brasiliensis (Gammaridea) and Caprella dilatata (Caprellidea). Laboratory experiments were conducted in separate aquaria with five vegetation habitat types: Halopteris scoparia, Jania rubens, C. racemosa without detritus, C. racemosa with detritus, Cymodocea nodosa, together with controls. The vegetation was first defaunated, and then 30 amphipods were introduced to each aquarium and exposed to a single Thalassoma pavo individual for 1 h, after which the fish’s gut contents were examined. Consumption (per fish per hour) of caprellids (11.7 ± 1.4) was higher overall than that of gammarids (8.7 ± 1.5) and likely reflects different microhabitat use by amphipods, which affects susceptibility to predators. Consumption of amphipods also varied by habitat type. The highest predation rate was found in the C. nodosa habitat (12.7 ± 2.19) and the lowest in the C. racemosa habitats with detritus (4.1 ± 1.78) and without detritus (5.2 ± 0.55), which did not differ. The pattern of predation across habitats, however, was similar for both caprellid and gammarid amphipods, indicating a more general effect of habitat on amphipod predation. Our findings showed that invasive species such as C. racemosa can decrease feeding by predators such as T. pavo. Changes in predator–prey interactions could have consequences for food web support in the Mediterranean.  相似文献

Here we present the first observation of the impact of the invasive Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea on native photophilic sponge species in the Adriatic Sea, with special focus on Sarcotragus spinosulus. Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea is able to completely overgrow the sponge, developing an exceptionally thick canopy with a maximum measured density of 1,887 m of stolons m−2 and 40,561 fronds m−2. Necrosis of the sponge surface was significantly correlated with the algal dry biomass, frond number and stolon length. Dense algal canopy, penetration of the algal stolon and rhizoids into the sponge oscula and covering of the ostiae probably diminishes the seawater circulation through the sponge and consequently results in its smothering and even death. We suggest that chemotropism is the reason why C. racemosa penetrates the sponge oscula and establishes such dense canopy on the sponge.  相似文献

The study evaluated different macroalgal invasions in the main Mediterranean coastal habitats on hard bottom. Biodiversity, species composition and structure of macroalgal assemblages were compared among non-invaded areas and areas invaded by the Chlorophyta Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea and by the turf-forming Rhodophyta Womersleyella setacea in three different habitats: shallow rocky bottom, deep rocky bottom and dead matte of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Results showed that alien macroalgae constituted a relevant component of benthic assemblages in invaded areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Assemblages invaded by Womersleyella setacea and Caulerpa racemosa showed lower values of diversity and large differences in the structure and species composition related to non-nvaded assemblages. The species that mostly suffered from invasion were erect species reproducing sexually; moreover, the dominance of W. setacea led to low abundance of native filamentous algae, while C. racemosa colonization seemed particularly threatening for encrusting algae. All the studied habitats appeared highly invasible by alien macroalgae, even if W. setacea appeared more invasive in deeper habitats, while colonization of C. racemosa seemed more serious in shallower habitats; the dead matte of P. oceanica represented a suitable substrate for the spread of both species. Differences among assemblages in different habitats were reduced in invaded areas.  相似文献

The present study aimed at evaluating the effects of Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea spread on Mediterranean soft-bottom assemblages. The benthic assemblages colonized by C. racemosa were compared with non invaded assemblages at multiple spatial scales. In addition, a manipulative experiment has been conducted over a one-year period in order to compare the structure of native assemblages invaded by the alga with others where the alga has been manually removed and others that were not invaded. Results of both studies showed that Mediterranean soft-bottom assemblages invaded by C. racemosa differed from non invaded ones in terms of species composition, abundance and patterns of spatial variability. Moreover, in areas cleaned out from the alga, the benthic assemblages begin to recover their structure and after one year they get more similar to the assemblages observed in non invaded areas. The present paper, taking into account different aspects of C. racemosa invasion in Mediterranean soft bottoms, highlighted that the observed increase in alpha diversity did not correspond to an increase in the overall diversity of the studied system. Infact, the loss of beta diversity in invaded sites, together with the spread of species typical of vegetated habitats, may contribute to a homogenization of the Mediterranean coastal system. Furthermore, a possible role of ecosystem engineer for C. racemosa can be hypothesized.  相似文献

P transposons belong to the eukaryotic DNA transposons, which are transposed by a cut and paste mechanism using a P-element-coded transposase. They have been detected in Drosophila, and reside as single copies and stable homologous sequences in many vertebrate species. We present the P elements Pcin1, Pcin2 and Pcin3 from Ciona intestinalis, a species of the most primitive chordates, and compare them with those from Ciona savignyi. They showed typical DNA transposon structures, namely terminal inverted repeats and target site duplications. The coding region of Pcin1 consisted of 13 small exons that could be translated into a P-transposon-homologous protein. C. intestinalis and C. savignyi displayed nearly the same phenotype. However, their P elements were highly divergent and the assumed P transposase from C. intestinalis was more closely related to the transposase from Drosophila melanogaster than to the transposase of C. savignyi. The present study showed that P elements with typical features of transposable DNA elements may be found already at the base of the chordate lineage. Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea has been invading various types of substrates in wide areas throughout the Mediterranean Sea. However, the effects of the distribution of this alga on zoobenthos are scanty. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of C. racemosa invasion on the feeding habits of some zoobenthic taxa inhabiting the upper infralittoral rocky shores. This was done by identifying the isotopic N and C ratios of several potential food sources and testing differences in isotope composition among the taxa collected from areas invaded and not-invaded areas by C. racemosa. Results suggest that C. racemosa detritus was a significant food source for the polychaete Syllis prolifera, the gammarid Corophium sextonae and the gastropods Cerithium rupestre and Pisinna glabrata. They would also suggest that stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios deserve further attention as a possible valuable approach to understand the overall effect of C. racemosa spread on the trophic interactions among the species.  相似文献

Over the past decades there has been a significant increase in fungal infections caused by Candida species, and continues to be common in immunocompromised individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Although Candida albicans remains the fungal species most frequently isolated as an opportunistic oral pathogen, other non-albicans are often identified in this cohort of patients, including C. dubliniensis. This yeast is closely related to and shares many phenotypic characteristics with C. albicans. Colonies of these two species appear morphologically identical when not grown on special media. The shared phenotypic characteristics of C. dubliniensis and C. albicans suggest that many C. dubliniensis isolates may have been misidentified as C. albicans in the past. The present studies aim is to recover and identify C. dubliniensis, and presumptive clinical C. albicans, from the oral cavities of HIV-seropositive individuals, comparing conventional media to obtain a simple, low-cost and reliable identification system for C. dubliniensis. A total of 16 isolates (3,98%) had been obtained from 402 HIV infected individuals with recurrent oropharyngitis and were identified as C. dubliniensis. Out of these C. dubliniensis isolates 19% were resistant, with MICs above 64 μg/ml to fluconazole. This constitutes, to the authors knowledge the first recovery of this organism in Venezuela.  相似文献

Four species belonging to Kickxellales (Kickxellomycotina) isolated from soil of Indonesia are described and illustrated. Two new species of Coemansia, C. asiatica and C. javaensis, were discovered in South Sulawesi and West Java, and two known species of Linderina, L. pennispora and L. macrospora, were discovered in East Kalimantan and South Sulawesi, respectively. These four species are newly added to the Indonesian mycobiota. A technique for inducing sporulation of C. javaensis and L. macrospora by adding substances derived from invertebrates such as aphids, nereids, or cladocerans to culture media is described.  相似文献

To study phylogenetic relationships among Okinawan soft corals of the genus Clavularia, the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer sequences of host corals and the 18S rDNA sequences of symbiotic algae were analyzed. The molecular phylogenetic trees of hosts showed that a prostanoid-containing species, Clavularia viridis, is deeply diverged from other species of Clavularia which do not biosynthesize the prostanoids as the main secondary metabolites. Comparison of their trees suggested poor phylogenetic concordance between hosts and symbionts.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of the shelled sacoglossan Oxynoe olivacea was investigated to better understand the role and importance of this species in influencing encroachments of the alien alga Caulerpa taxifolia in the Mediterranean sea. We tested whether this slug preferred, as preliminary field observations suggested, an aggregative feeding behaviour and which part of the algal thallus, phylloid vs rhizoid, it preferred. Results showed that O. olivacea fed in groups and actively selected phylloid. This outcome poses important questions regarding the possibility that this species, fragmenting the alga thallus, could enhance dispersion and regeneration of C. taxifolia.  相似文献

We analysed the phylogenetic and phylogeographic relationships of four Mediterranean species of the rare slave-making ant genus Chalepoxenus and eleven of its about 20 Temnothorax host species by sequencing the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I and II genes. Neighbour-Joining, Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian analyses based on 1320 bp indicate that the genus Chalepoxenus constitutes a monophylum. In all three analyses, C. kutteri from Southwest Europe and the workerless, “degenerate slavemaker” C. brunneus from North Africa form a monophyletic group. C. muellerianus and C. tauricus, distributed in Southern Europe and Ukraine, respectively, form a monophylum in the Neighbour-Joining and the Maximum Parsimony analysis. In our limited set of only 11 of several hundred Temnothorax species, T. flavicornis forms the sister group of Chalepoxenus. Our study further indicates paraphyly of the genus Temnothorax with respect to Chalepoxenus. Moreover, the results suggest that speciation in this slave-making genus is possibly caused by the formation of host races as different Chalepoxenus species use different hosts, and some samples seem to cluster by host species rather than by geographical distance. A Sebacinales species was recovered from a clone library made from a pooled rhizosphere sample of Nicotiana attenuata plants from 14 native populations. Axenic cultures of the related species, Piriformospora indica and Sebacina vermifera, were used to examine their effects on plant performance. Inoculation of N. attenuata seeds with either fungus species stimulated seed germination and increased growth and stalk elongation. S. vermifera inoculated plants flowered earlier, produced more flowers and matured more seed capsules than did non-inoculated plants. Jasmonate treatment during rosette-stage growth, which slows growth and elicits herbivore resistance traits, erased differences in vegetative, but not reproductive performance resulting from S. vermifera inoculation. Total nitrogen and phosphorous contents did not differ between inoculated and control plants, suggesting that the performance benefits of fungal inoculation did not result from improvements in nutritional status. Since the expression of trypsin proteinase inhibitors (TPI), defensive proteins which confer resistance to attack from Manduca sexta larvae, incur significant growth and fitness costs for the plant, we examined the effect of S. vermifera inoculation on herbivore resistance and TPI activity. After 10 days of feeding on S. vermifera-inoculated plants, larval mass was 46% higher and TPI activity was 48% lower than that on non-inoculated plants. These results suggest that Sebacina spp. may interfere with defense signaling and allow plants to increase growth rates at the expense of herbivore resistance mediated by TPIs.  相似文献

Disturbance is a key factor influencing the invasibility of habitats and assemblages. This relationship was extensively studied in terrestrial systems, but it was scarcely tested in the marine environment. We investigated experimentally the interactive effects of changes in the intensity and temporal variability of mechanical disturbance by boulders on invasion dynamics of the green alga Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea in littoral rock pools. We tested the hypothesis that the success of invasion of C. racemosa would be (1) greater under large than under low intensity of disturbance, (2) greater under large than under low temporal variability of disturbance and that (3) interactive effects could also occur, with variability of disturbance magnifying the effects of intensity. C. racemosa was virtually absent in pools maintained under high intensity of disturbance, independently of temporal variability. High intensity of disturbance was also associated with lower density and length of fronds and thinner diameter of the stolons of the alga. The total number of native taxa and the abundance of encrusting coralline algae increased under high intensity of disturbance. Differently, turf-forming algae were positively affected by temporal variability of disturbance, while canopy-forming algae did not respond to experimental treatments. Our results suggest a direct negative effect of the most severe experimental conditions on the spread of C. racemosa in rock pools. This likely overwhelmed likely concomitant positive and negative effects mediated by resident organisms. The results of this study help anticipating invasion dynamics of C. racemosa in rock pools under climate change scenarios, in which both intensity and temporal variability of extreme meteorological events are predicted to increase.  相似文献

The maT clade of transposons is a group of transposable elements intermediate in sequence and predicted protein structure to mariner and Tc transposons, with a distribution thus far limited to a few invertebrate species. We present evidence, based on searches of publicly available databases, that the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae has several maT-like transposons, which we have designated as CbmaT elements, dispersed throughout its genome. We also describe two additional transposon sequences that probably share their evolutionary history with the CbmaT transposons. One resembles a fold back variant of a CbmaT element, with long (380-bp) inverted terminal repeats (ITRs) that show a high degree (71%) of identity to CbmaT1. The other, which shares only the 26-bp ITR sequences with one of the CbmaT variants, is present in eight nearly identical copies, but does not have a transposase gene and may therefore be cross mobilised by a CbmaT transposase. Using PCR-based mobility assays, we show that CbmaT1 transposons are capable of excising from the C. briggsae genome. CbmaT1 excised approximately 500 times less frequently than Tcb1 in the reference strain AF16, but both CbmaT1 and Tcb1 excised at extremely high frequencies in the HK105 strain. The HK105 strain also exhibited a high frequency of spontaneous induction of unc-22 mutants, suggesting that it may be a mutator strain of C. briggsae.  相似文献

The foraging behaviour variability of three striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus L. 1758) populations with respect to the vegetation cover was examined along the French Mediterranean coasts. We tested both the carrying capacity of different habitats and the hypothesis of a food segregation by the invasive alga Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh, on the functioning of benthic fish populations. The results indicated a significant site effect on M. surmuletus foraging behaviour and movements. The vegetation cover may play an important role in modifying the striped red mullet cost of foraging (sampling effort) and thus its strategy of prey capture. As long as the cover of marine phanerogams and/or macrophyte algae (Caulerpaceae) increases, the foraging budget and the distances covered in search of prey decrease significantly. Similarly, the striped red mullet increases the prospected sample periods to augment its foraging success, swimming above the bottom. These changes are related to the development of a dense superficial network of plagiotropic rhizomes and stolons, and to the reduction of space between fronds that limits the accessibility to resources and may increase intra-specific food competition. The role of C. taxifolia does not differ from that of other marine phanerogams but induces significant changes in the structure of Mullidae populations at the local level. The rapid expansion of Caulerpaceae in the Mediterranean Sea could constitute a real threat for the balance of the marine coastal biodiversity and the ecology of M. surmuletus, which is considered a flagship species for coastal Mediterranean demersal fisheries.  相似文献

A pea rust fungus, Uromyces viciae-fabae, has been classified into two varieties, var. viciae-fabae and var. orobi, based on differences in urediniospore wall thickness and putative host specificity in Japan. In principal component analyses, morphological features of urediniospores and teliospores of 94 rust specimens from Vicia, Lathyrus, and Pisum did not show definite host-specific morphological groups. In molecular analyses, 23 Uromyces specimens from Vicia, Lathyrus, and Pisum formed a single genetic clade based on D1/D2 and ITS regions. Four isolates of U. viciae-fabae from V. cracca and V. unijuga could infect and sporulate on P. sativum. These results suggest that U. viciae-fabae populations on different host plants are not biologically differentiated into groups that can be recognized as varieties.Contribution no. 184, Laboratory of Plant Parasitic Mycology, Institute of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Tsukuba, Japan  相似文献

Pleurotus species are found to be among the most efficient lignocellulolytic types of white-rot fungi. Rice is the main grain cultivated in the extreme south of Brazil. Defatted rice bran and straw are by-products of low aggregate value. Soft rush (Juncus effusus) is a common native plant also very abundant in the region. In the present work, we evaluated changes in substrate composition after growth of two white-rot fungal species: Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus sajor-caju, aiming to increase protein content and digestibility from substrates through solid fermentations and obtain edible mushrooms of high aggregate value. For that, defatted rice bran, defatted rice straw and soft rush were utilized as substrate. The influence of the variables thermal treatment temperature of substrate, substrate moisture and concentration were evaluated on the protein content, digestibility and biological efficiency. The highest protein enrichment of rice bran in P. sajor-caju-fermented medium was due the fact that there was no fructification in these media, while for the P. ostreatus-fermented medium, part of the synthesized protein was converted into mushrooms. The highest protein enrichments were verified in medium with 80% moisture and 25% soft rush (47.1% using P. ostreatus and 49.0% using P. sajor-caju). A higher digestible protein increase was obtained for both species in media with 70% moisture and 25% soft rush.  相似文献

Alligatorweed, (Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb.), an aquatic and wetland plant native to South America, is an aggressive weed in many parts of the world. Its ability to compete with other native plants and to impede waterways has made it a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems. Although biological control with insects has been fairly successful in aquatic habitats, there is a need for additional agents to manage the weed in upland sites. Accordingly, in a survey in Brazil in 1997 a fungus, Nimbya (=Alternaria) alternantherae (Holcomb and Antonopoulus) Simmons and Alcorn, was discovered and confirmed to be highly damaging to alligatorweed. Studies were conducted to determine the potential of this fungus for controlling this weed. Several isolates from Brazil, USA, and Puerto Rico were compared and no differences in virulence were observed, although a lower dew requirement was demonstrated for the Brazilian isolates. Conidia were more effective than mycelial suspension, and inoculum concentrations of 1×105 and 1×106 conidia per ml provided significant levels of control of the weed in greenhouse and field experiments, respectively. In a host-range study, N. alternantherae infected 6 plant species from a total of 42 species belonging to 23 families. N. alternantherae has the potential to be an effective mycoherbicide for alligatorweed.  相似文献
