Setaria glauca (yellow foxtail), S. geniculata (knotroot foxtail), and S. faberii (giant foxtail) are important cosmopolitan weeds of temperate and tropical regions. Isozyme markers were used to investigate genetic diversity and population genetic structure in 94 accessions of yellow foxtail, 24 accessions of knotroot foxtail, and 51 accessions of giant foxtail, collected mainly from North America and Eurasia. Giant foxtail populations were nearly identical genetically, with only one population exhibiting isozyme polymorphism. Yellow and knotroot foxtail populations had low genetic diversity but marked population differentiation. Although the latter species are similar morphologically, they are readily distinguished electrophoretically, with Nei's genetic identity being 0.83. In both species, genetic divergence between accessions from Eurasia and North America was minimal. Populations from the native ranges had slightly greater genetic diversity than those from the respective introduced ranges. Yellow foxtail populations genetically clustered into Asian, European, and North American groups. Within North America, yellow foxtail populations from Iowa were genetically diverse whereas populations collected from other North American locations were nearly monomorphic for the same multilocus genotype. Knotroot foxtail populations in North America were genetically differentiated into northern and southern groups on either side of a line at ≈37° N latitude. No genetic patterning was evident in knotroot foxtail populations from Eurasia. In both yellow and knotroot foxtail, patterns of population genetic structure have been influenced by several factors, including genetic bottlenecks associated with founder events, genetic drift, and natural selection.  相似文献

Studies were conducted evaluating germinability states in giant foxtail (Setaria faberii) embryos, as well as surrounding tissues (hull, caryopsis), with germination assays. Further, seed age, fascicle arrangement, flowering patterns, and elongation in the inflorescence were evaluated. Both qualitatitive and quantitative morphological observations of the hull and the caryopsis were revealed by precisely determined fertilized spikelet age from anthesis until after seed abscission. Red coloration of the placental pad at ≈ 11 d after anthesis is probably a morphological indicator of physiological maturity. Germinability of giant foxtail embryos changed with development. Four qualitatively different types of embryo germination were observed during development of the seed: early disorganized callus growth at the basal, coleorhizal end of the embryo; germination of immature embryos with shortened and thickened axes; germination of the scutellum; and germination and growth of the coleoptile and coleorhiza in embryos aged 7 d after anthesis and older. Axis-specific embryo germinability was also observed. Inhibition of the embryo could be localized to the coleoptile, the coleorhiza, or both. These studies provide evidence for a complex model of germinability regulation based on the independent, asynchronous actions of the embryo, caryopsis, and hull compartments, as well as on their dependent, synchronous action. These studies provide evidence for a dynamic, developmental model of giant foxtail germinability regulation resulting in phenotypes with a wide range of germinability shed from an individual panicle. These diverse germinability phenotypes are found at all stages of development, but particularly when the seed is shed and the soil seed bank is replenished.  相似文献

Many domesticated crops are derived from species whose life history includes weedy characteristics, such as the ability to vary branching patterns in response to environmental conditions. However, domesticated crop plants are characterized by less variable plant architecture, as well as by a general reduction in vegetative branching compared to their progenitor species. Here we examine weedy green millet and its domesticate foxtail millet that differ in the number of tillers (basal branches) and axillary branches along each tiller. Branch number in F(2:3) progeny of a cross between the two species varies with genotype, planting density, and other environmental variables, with significant genotype-environment interactions (GEI). This is shown by a complex pattern of reaction norms and by variation in the pattern of significant quantitative trait loci (QTL) amongst trials. Individual and joint analyses of high and low density trials indicate that most QTL have significant GEI. Dominance and epistasis also explain some variation in branching. Likely candidate genes underlying the QTL (based on map position and phenotypic effect) include teosinte branched1 and barren stalk1. Phytochrome B, which has been found to affect response to shading in other plants, explains little or no variation. Much variation in branching is explained by QTL that do not have obvious candidate genes from maize or rice.  相似文献

研究了4种多年生根茎型耐旱植物——羊草、高冰草、苇状羊茅和俄罗斯新麦草种子的萌发和根芽生长对不同浓度(0、50、100、150、200、300、400和500 mmol·L-1 )NaCl胁迫的响应。结果表明,4种牧草种子的发芽率随着盐浓度的增加呈下降趋势。其中,羊草种子耐盐性最差,300 mmol·L-1 NaCl处理的种子发芽率仅为1.5%,浓度超过300 mmol·L-1时,没有种子萌发;高冰草、苇状羊茅和俄罗斯新麦草耐盐性较强,在500 mmol·L-1 NaCl时发芽率分别为17.3%、20.0%和18.1%。4种牧草的根长和芽长均与NaCl浓度呈极显著的负相关,但表现不同:随着NaCl浓度的增加,俄罗斯新麦草的根长下降速率最快,高冰草最慢;羊草芽长下降速率最快,高冰草最慢;羊草的根/冠比值呈上升趋势,而其他3种牧草则呈下降趋势。说明NaCl胁迫对羊草抑制表现为胚根<胚芽,而后三者则为胚根>胚芽。从种子发芽率和胚生长状况看,在种子萌发期内,羊草种子萌发和苗期的耐盐能力最差,而高冰草、苇状羊茅和俄罗斯新麦草的种子萌发和苗期生长均有较强的耐盐能力。  相似文献

沙鞭是鄂尔多斯高原流动沙丘上分布的多年生禾草。对位于沙层不同深度的种子萌发和幼苗出土进行了测定。结果表明 ,种子的萌发和幼苗的出土随着沙埋深度的增加而减少 ,最高的幼苗出土率来自 0 .5~ 2 .0 cm浅层沙埋的种子 ,并且沙埋的深度影响种子萌发的时间。沙埋越深 ,越多的种子不能萌发并且处于强迫休眠的状态。但是 ,当被埋较深种子上层的沙层被移走使种子位于较浅的沙层时 ,种子能够克服强迫休眠。种子的强迫休眠还能够通过改善沙层中的空气含量来克服。在自然生境中 ,沙丘的流动性能够使萌发后的幼苗整个暴露在空气中遭受干旱胁迫 ,或者萌发后的幼苗在因无后续的降雨而变干。但是 ,沙鞭在幼苗的早期具有忍受干燥 ,在下次水合后能够恢复生长的能力。幼根的长度和干燥时间影响幼苗的生长恢复率  相似文献

The genus Setaria is economically important because many species are cultivated for grains or forage. Setaria magna is an American species, native to North America and introduced in South America. The morphological aspect of this species is similar to S. italica (foxtail millet), suggesting its potential value as a crop. The purpose of this work was to understand the breeding system (self-pollination vs. open pollination) of S. magna; additionally, the floral development was described. The results of the breeding system analysis indicated that S. magna is mainly autogamous and does not appear to have a self-incompatibility mechanism. The floral development observed was similar to that described for other Paniceae; in most of the spikelets only the upper anthecium developed fruit, but a small number of spikelets presented bisexual lower florets. These spikelets produced two caryopses per spikelet. Thus, S. magna can produced two types of dispersal units; a few whitish naked caryopses from the lower anthecium that fall without their lemma and palea at maturity; and a high number of brown caryopses protected by the lemma and palea from the upper anthecium. The presence of a normal embryo sac in the upper anthecium suggests that S. magna would present normal sexual reproduction, although we can not reject the formation of apomitic seeds in the lower anthecium.  相似文献

以不同类型的319个水稻品种为研究对象,研究了10 mg·L-1 Cd2+处理对水稻种子萌发的影响.结果表明:Cd2+对种子发芽率影响较小,对根系生长的影响显著,且大于对芽生长的影响;不同类型水稻种子萌发对Cd的响应差异较大,敏感顺序为粳稻>籼稻>杂交稻;两系不育系根系长度和根系数量受Cd的抑制程度显著高于三系.应用快速聚类方法,可以将参试品种划分为耐受型、中间型和敏感型3种不同的敏感类型.  相似文献

研究了鸭类的消化作用对海三棱藤草(Scirpus mariqueter)萌发速度和萌发率的影响。模拟消化道的环境(酸性条件pH=2,高温T=42℃,和消化道对种子的研磨作用),分别对海三棱蔗草的种子进行了处理,并与自然环境下鸭类未取食的种子及鸭类粪便中采集的种子进行比较。结果表明。研磨作用能够显著加快种子的萌发速度,而酸性环境和高温条件减缓了种子的萌发速度。鸭类的消化作用对海三棱藤草种子的萌发率没有显著影响。  相似文献

Austrostipa compressa, a native ephemeral of southwest Western Australia was stimulated to germinate under a range of temperatures, in the presence of light, and exposure to smoke-water. This combination of environmental cues results in winter-maximum germination in immediate postfire and disturbed-soil environments of this Mediterranean-type climate. In contrast, Ehrharta calycina, an introduced perennial grass from southern Africa that has invaded Banksia woodlands, germinated under a wide range of temperature and light conditions, but showed no promotive response to smoke-water. Although A. compressa seeds tolerated heat shock better than E. calycina, the self-burial mechanism of A. compressa seeds ensures protection from fire. High-intensity fire could have a greater impact on E. calycina, as the seeds of this species tend to accumulate in the top of the soil profile where they are more susceptible to high temperatures. Although seeds of E. calycina are more susceptible to high temperatures, survival of mature individuals by postfire resprouting ensures continued survival in native woodlands. Estimates of soil seed bank densities showed extreme variability, but some recently burnt areas of the Yule Brook Botany Reserve contained up to 8000 seed m?2 of A. compressa and nearly 75 000 seeds m?2 of E. calycina. Viable soil seed bank densities of A. compressa are reduced with time-since-last fire, but areas of greater than 45 years since the last fire, still contained up to 119 seeds m?2. In both species, only about half their soil seed bank germinates following fire, thus ensuring the potential for later recruitment. Massive soil seed populations of E. calycina in native Banksia woodlands pose a major problem to management of this plant community type.  相似文献

谷子是中国干旱和半干旱区主要的粮食作物之一.它耐旱、耐瘠薄、抗逆性强、适应性广,是未来应对干旱形势的重要战略储备作物.本文基于谷子的157个地理分布点数据,利用中国谷子产量与环境指标的相关性分析,选出10个气候指标、7个土壤指标和3个地形指标,采用MaxEnt、EMFA、RF和GAM共4个物种分布模型,分析中国谷子的潜在适宜性分布.结果表明: 4种模型均可成功模拟谷子的潜在地理分布,其中,MaxEnt模型的模拟效果最好.选用的环境指标中,水热条件对谷子生长最敏感.模型结果结合ArcGIS空间分析模块的结果表明,中国谷子的潜在适宜生长区(最适宜区和适宜区)总面积为55.68×104 km2,远远大于当前谷子的实际种植面积,主要集中在东北地区的东北平原、长白山以南与牡丹江流域,华北地区的淮河以北,华中地区汉江以东与大别山以北,西北地区的黄土高原、鄂尔多斯高原南部、祁连山脉东部、天山山脉东部与阿尔泰山脉,西南地区的重庆以北和贵州西部局地区域.  相似文献

Soil salinization and alkalinization frequently co-occur in nature, but there is little information on the interactive effects of salt and alkali stresses on plants. Seed germination and early seedling growth are crucial stages for plant establishment. We investigated the interactive effects of salt and alkali stresses on seed germination, germination recovery and seedling growth of a halophyte Spartina alterniflora. Seed germination percentage was not significantly reduced at low salinity (≤ 200 mM) at pH 6.63–9.95, but decreased with increased salinity and pH. Ungerminated seeds germinated well after transfer to distilled water from treatment solutions, indicating that seeds can remain viable in high salt–alkaline habits. Shoot growth was stimulated at low salinity and pH, but decreased with increased salinity and pH. Radicle elongation decreased sharply with increased salinity and pH, and was significantly inhibited when pH ≥ 9.0, indicating that the radicles are very sensitive to salt–alkaline stress. The deleterious effects of salinity or high pH alone were less than when combined. A reciprocal enhancement of salt and alkali stresses is a characteristic feature for salt–alkaline stress. Stepwise regression analysis indicates that salinity is the dominant factor, while pH and buffer capacity are secondary for salt–alkaline mixed stress.  相似文献

Halophyte species demonstrate differing levels of salt tolerance. Understanding interspecific variation to salinity levels is of value from both the scientific perspective, which includes the identification of traits associated with salinity tolerance, as well as from an applied perspective, which includes identifying plant species for specific salinity restoration and remediation projects. This paper investigates the effects of salinity on germination of 12 Australian species of the plant genus Frankenia L. (Frankeniaceae). We use saline solutions that corresponded to the average soil–water salinity concentrations in the arid zones of inland Australia. These solutions consisted of 10 mM calcium chloride, 30 mM magnesium sulphate, and 450 mM sodium chloride. The aims of our study were: (1) to investigate the germination (germination rates, germination success) of Frankenia seeds to four salinity levels (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%), (2) to test for possible interaction effects between seed mass, germination, and salinity, and (3) to examine the effect of salinity levels on the inhibition of germination and/or seed damage. Species varied in their salt tolerance for germination rates and success. Species with larger seeds had higher germination rates and germination success for high salinity levels. Several species did not germinate well at any salinity level. Finally, no seeds were adversely affected by exposure to high salinity levels pre-germination. There is potential for including some Frankenia species in remediation and revegetation projects in areas affected by salinity, and also as garden plants in saline regions.  相似文献

In this experiment the separate and interactive effects of grazing of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphae by collembola and of relative germination date on competition between the mycorrhizal perennial grassPanicum virgatum and the non-mycorrhizal annual cruciferBrassica nigra were investigated. In the absence of competition,P. virgatum mass and P uptake were not affected by collembola grazing; grazing did reduce tissue N concentration and root: shoot ratio. Competition fromB. nigra plants of the same age/size (“simultaneous competition”) significantly reducedP. virgatum total, root, and shoot mass relative to control plants not subject to competition. In contrast, when in competition,B. nigra plants did not differ in biomass fromB. nigra controls grown without competition. Simultaneous competition also reduced N and P uptake byP. virgatum, but not byB. nigra. Grazing by collembola during simultaneous competition increased the differences in nutrient uptake and tended to shift the competitive balance further toward the non-mycorrhizalB. nigra. WhenP. virgatum plants were subjected to competition fromB. nigra plants which germinated three weeks later (“offset competition”) the situation was reversed: offsetB. nigra plants were negatively affected by competition while the larger, olderP. virgatum plants were not. Thus, relative germination date is important in determining the relative competitive ability of these two species. Grazing by collembola did not affect offset competition. The grazing of VAM hyphae by collembola appears to increase N availability in this experimental system. Under simultaneous competition, this N is taken up by the more extensive root system ofB. nigra; under offset conditions, the root system of the smallerB. nigra plants is insufficient to take advantage of the added resources. Thus, we suggest that grazing-induced transient changes in nutrient availability and the differential abilities of the two species to make use of these added resources constitute the mechanisms by which relative germination date and collembola grazing influence competition.  相似文献

Cactus seeds have developed adaptations to survive with high temperatures and low soil moisture in their habitats. We studied the effect of the combination of four water potentials (0, −0.2, −0.4 and −0.6 MPa) and two temperatures (25°C and 35°C) on germination and seedling mass of four endemic Leptocereus species from Cuba. There were two semi-arid coast species (L. arboreus and L. santamarinae) and two species inhabiting dry inland karstic hills (L. ekmanii and L. scopulophilus). We hypothesized that: (a) a decrease in water potential and an increase in temperature would result in low and slow germination, as well as in low seedling mass, and (b) ungerminated cactus seeds after exposure to combined water and temperature stress would have a high recovery capacity. The minimum time required for the seeds to start germination (Tmin), mean germination time (MGT) and germinability were evaluated. In addition, seed mass, the recovery after treatments of non-germinated seeds, and the seedling fresh mass obtained under different treatments were compared between species. In general, germination was only obtained at 25°C and germinability and seedling mass were drastically affected by the reduction from 0 MPa to −0.2 MPa. Seeds showed thermoinhibition at 35°C at all water potentials. There was a tendency to increase the MGT with decreasing water potential in three species. Low seed recovery occurred at all combined treatments for three species. If the predictions of increased temperature and decreased rainfall for the Caribbean region occur, a reduction in the germination of the Leptocereus species studied is expected.  相似文献

The species ofBriza L. s. l. are disjunctly distributed between Eurasia and South America. A taxometric analysis has been carried out, using data from electrophoresis of seed polypeptides and published morphological characters. Evidence from a cluster analysis of seed polypeptide data strongly supports the recognition of two different natural groups, a S. American group and a Eurasian group, and is consistent with karyotype data, but does not support the generic groupings of South American taxa derived from the morphological data.  相似文献

We examined the distribution of residual15N and its uptake by a foxtail millet crop grown in field lysimeters following at previous garlic crops fertilized with either15N-urea or15N-ammonium sulphate. Garlic apprently removed more N from the lysimeters treated with urea-N than from those treated with (NH4)2SO4. Fertilizer-N in the lysmeters was similar (ca. 32% of original) following millet harvest. About 16 per cent of both fertilizers in the lysimeters was removed by the millet.  相似文献

Field collections and 296 herbarium sheets were examined for 27 morphometric variables. A priori species identifcation was based on geographical distribution except forH. californicum, a diploid species primarily occurring in California and differing from the much more widespread tetraploidH. brachyantherum that thrives in N. America and N.E. Asia;H. capense grows in S. Africa andH. secalinum mainly in Europe. Various cluster analyses were used followed by cluster recovery verification. Classificatory discriminant analysis and validation by the bootstrap yielded 85–90% overall total correct classification of the four species. Canonical analysis revealed thatH. californicum occupies an intermediate phenetic position among the other three distinct species. Factors of shape differences were unravelled and portrayed by shearing. A revised key to species was drawn up.  相似文献
