The incidence, relative abundance and biological characteristics of mature male parr of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were studied in two subarctic (69–70 N°) river systems in the northernmost part of Scandinavia. The proportion of mature males was low (0–25%) among ≥1 year‐old parr, and clearly lower than reported earlier in more southern rivers. The ages of mature males ranged from 1+ to 6 + year, the most abundant age group was 3 + year. Both age structure and size of the mature male parr varied between rivers and years. Mature male parr in the main stem were younger and also smaller than the parr of the same age in the tributaries.  相似文献

We report genetic differences for resistance to the pathogen Listonella anguillarum within and among one cultured and two wild Canadian populations of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, using a common-garden experimental protocol. Following exposure to the causative agent for vibriosis, parr originating from the endangered Stewiacke River population experienced significantly higher mortality than cultured parr, four generations removed from the Saint John River population, and wild parr from Tusket River. Pathogen resistance differed between sexes; males consistently experienced higher survival than females. There was no evidence that maturity influenced pathogen resistance in male parr. The population and sex differences in pathogen resistance documented here have implications for risk assessments of the demographic consequences of interbreeding between wild and farmed Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

Synopsis Age at maturity in male Atlantic salmon parr from landlocked populations in the Watshishou and Musquaro Rivers is significantly greater than in anadromous populations from the same rivers. We conclude that high post-smolt mortality in anadromous stocks is conducive to male parr maturity at an early age. We also suggest that the lower proportion of maturing male parr in landlocked stocks may be related to competition among males for mates and the smaller ultimate size of spawning adult landlocked salmon.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. eggs were collected from grilse that were individually identified as ISAV-positive based on the detection of pathogen in ovarian fluid by RT-PCR. The eggs were fertilised, disinfected and reared under quarantine conditions. To address the possibility of vertical transmission, fertilised eggs, alevins and parr were screened for the virus by SHK-1 cell culture and RT-PCR. In addition, ISAV-negative parr were injected with homogenates of potentially infected eyed eggs. ISAV was not detected in eyed eggs, alevins or parr. No mortalities occurred among fish injected with the egg homogenates. These observations suggest the absence of a vertical transmission route for ISAV infection.  相似文献

The nutritional status of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr was assessed by examining how proximate body composition and energy content (kJ g−1) were associated with the habitat rearing origin of parr utilizing fluvial or lacustrine areas. Comparisons were made among sampling sites within the two habitats, as well as between the two major habitat types applying both fixed effect and random effect models. Mean protein concentration varied from 13·87 to 15·67% among fluvial sites, and from 14·96 to 16·38% among lacustrine sampling locations. Mean fat concentration ranged from 1·71 to 3·32% and from 2·22 to 4·29% among fluvial and lacustrine locations, respectively, with energy concentration, on average, c . 11% higher in lacustrine parr. Interpretation of results of comparisons between habitats was dependent upon the statistical model used. Benefits associated with lacustrine rearing, such as greater body size and nutritional status, have implications for overwintering survival in fresh water as well as subsequent survival during initial sea entrance as smolts.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr exposed to heated water effluent were larger than parr living upstream of the discharge. There was no effect, however, of temperature on the incidence of male parr maturation, despite the link between growth and maturation found in other studies. Mature parr upstream of the effluent were smaller than mature parr downstream of it, suggesting a higher size threshold for maturation in those parr exposed to the heated water. The small distance between upstream and downstream sampling sites probably precluded genetic differences between the parr, thus implying an environmental influence on the threshold size above which male parr matured.  相似文献

One‐year‐old and 1‐summer‐old salmon parr have been stocked in the Simojoki, a northern Baltic river, to protect the natural salmon stock from extinction. This enhancement practice was studied during a 5‐year stocking period, when an average of 14.3 1‐summer‐old parr and 5.4 1‐year‐old parr was needed to produce one sea running smolt. The mean yield from stocking was 70 smolts per 1000 stocked 1‐summer‐old parr and 186 smolts per 1000 stocked 1‐year‐old parr. The mean cost of smolts produced by stocking 1‐year‐old and 1‐summer‐old parr was 1.2 and 2.6 times the cost of producing one 50 g smolt in the hatchery, respectively. There was a negative relationship between density of wild parr and length of smolts stocked as 1‐summer‐old parr in the river, but no relationship between wild parr density and length of smolts stocked as 1‐year‐old parr. This indicated that 1‐summer‐old parr were more susceptible than the older parr to competition with wild parr. Considering production costs and smolt yield, stocking of 1‐year‐old parr appeared to be more profitable than that of 1‐summer‐old parr in the enhancement of the endangered salmon stock.  相似文献

In experiments conducted in two successive years, the progeny of male Atlantic salmon parr ( Salmo salar L.) were found to grow in length at the same rate as the progeny of sea-run males. The proportions of these populations which smolted at one year old did not differ in the first experiment, but were significantly higher among progeny of parr (33%) than among progeny of sea run-adults (21%) in the second year. Survivals throughout the experiments were high, at 89 and 91% respectively in the two years. A possible inhibitory relationship between smolting and sexual reproduction in the same year is discussed.  相似文献

Increased growth during winter increased the incidence of age 1+ Salmo salar smolts in spring. High condition factor in spring and good growth in summer was associated with a high incidence of sexually mature males in autumn. In two experiments, groups (n=160–237 per group) of individually identified parr, either ungraded (lower and upper modal groups: LMG, UMG) or size-graded (LMG only), were reared at either 10, 6 or 3 °C overwinter (Nov to May). At 10 °C, up to 51% of parr originally in the LMG became smolts in spring at age 1+. In contrast, at either 6 or 3 °C (control), < 6% of LMG parr became smolts. The probability of being recruited into the UMG overwinter was positively related to initial body size, and was increased by size-grading. Smolt recruitment was two-fold higher among females compared to males; a proportion of males by age 0+ had already opted to mature at age 1+ rather than smolt at age 1+. In contrast, smolting at age 1+ was not inhibited in males previously mature at age 0+. During summer (May to Nov), all experimental groups were reared at ambient temperature, each subdivided between fresh water (max 21 °C) or seawater (max 15 °C). Good growth in seawater of winter recruits into the UMG confirmed they had completed smolting. Mortality in seawater among parr was 41–83%, and among smolts was 10–22%. Specific growth rate during summer was inversely related to winter rearing temperature. The incidence of sexual maturity in autumn at age 1+ among male parr was positively related to winter rearing temperature, fork length and condition factor in May, but there was large variation among individuals with respect to body size and maturity. Summer rearing in seawater reduced growth and the incidence of maturation. Parr and post-smolt maturity was 84–99% and 100% in fresh water respectively, 21–58% and 0% in seawater.  相似文献

Post-release adaptation processes of hatchery-reared honmasu salmon parr   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Hatchery-reared honmasu salmon Oncorhynchus rhodurus × masou parr released into the Yanagisawa River, Tochigi Prefecture on 24 June 1996 increased significantly in length and weight by November, while siblings retained in hatchery tanks did not. Plasma growth hormone (GH) levels of the released parr increased from 1 day after the release until 23 August, while the GH levels of the wild parr in the river did not increase. The released parr started to consume various natural prey organisms within a day after release. However, stomach fullness of the released parr was considerably lower than that of the wild parr during the first week following release. Trypsin activity in the released parr increased after 23 August, 2 months post-release. The results demonstrate that the released parr adapt to the natural river environment within weeks. Endocrine control by GH and exocrine pancreas activity appear to play important roles in the post-release adaptation processes.  相似文献

Summary Mature male parr successfully fertilized eggs of anadromous female Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, in competition with anadromous males under simulated natural conditions. Mating situations were created in which mature male parr and anadromous males competing for the opportunity to spawn with an anadromous female differed in allelic forms of the same enzyme. Females deposited eggs into a sequence of 3 or 4 eggs nests. The mean proportion of eggs in a redd fertilized by parr increased with increasing numbers of parr present at a redd, reaching 23% at male parr: anadromous male ratios of 20:1. Single male parr fertilized, on average, 5% of the eggs in a redd. The proportion of eggs in an egg nest fertilized by parr also depended upon the order of egg nest construction, such that parr mating success was highest at the initial nest constructed and lowest at the final nest. Parr have relatively high fertilization success for their size when compared with the smaller maturation phenotype of other salmonids.  相似文献

The study examined the density‐mediated effects on growth, survival and dispersal of wild and farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar offspring in the period immediately following emergence, using a substitutive design. In small confined stream channels, wild parr coexisting with farmed parr had a significantly poorer survival, than wild parr alone. Density did not affect this relationship. In larger unconfined stream channels, wild parr coexisting with farmed parr entered a downstream trap in higher numbers than wild parr in allopatry. The results suggests that during the earliest life stages, farmed S. salar can outcompete wild S. salar, resulting in a reduced survival of wild S. salar.  相似文献

The growth of naturally recruited Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr in fluvial and lacustrine habitats was investigated in three northern Norwegian watercourses. Salmon parr were sampled in autumn with small mesh gillnets in lakes, and by electrofishing in streams. In three northern Norwegian watercourses, lacustrine Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr were larger in length and weight at age than fluvial parr. Back-calculated lengths indicated that lacustrine salmon parr were recruited from the fastest growing part of the populations and they had larger growth (length) increments between age intervals than fluvial parr. There was no consistent pattern in growth comparisons between parr from the inlet and outlet streams. Temperature regime alone could not explain the growth difference observed between parr from the different habitats.  相似文献

Variation at four microsatellite loci was examined for three populations of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar from the Conne River, Newfoundland. Samples of wild parr were collected from the mainstem Conne River during 4 years, and from tributaries Twillick Brook and Bernard Brook during 2 years. No significant temporal variation was observed in allele frequencies at the Ssal4, Ssal97, Ssa202, and Ssa289 loci. No difference in allele frequencies was observed between parr from Bernard and Twillick brooks at any locus, but allele frequencies of mainstem Conne River parr were significantly different from those of the tributaries at Ssal4 and Ssa202, indicative of differentiation among local populations. Atlantic salmon from the Conne River system were well differentiated from those in Nova Scotia, Canada and from those in Europe.  相似文献

Smolt traits (length, age) and timing of smolt migration of wild Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., were investigated in the Simojoki River, northern Baltic Sea. The aim was to determine whether they responded to changes in parr length, parr density and temperature from 2000 to 2014. Annual electrofishing surveys and smolt numbers determined parr densities by springtime trapping in the river mouth. During the smolt trapping period captured parr and smolts were aged from scales. Water temperature was measured daily. Mean length decreased from 137 mm (TL) to 129 mm among 2‐year‐old smolts, and from 150 mm to 139 mm among 3‐year‐olds. Median date of the smolt migration was 10 days earlier, from early June to late May during the study period, linked to the rise in air temperature in May at the nearby Kemi‐Tornio airport. However, the median day temperature and the mean daily water temperatures during the second (Q2) and third (Q3) migration quartiles did not change. This implied that migration began when a suitable water temperature was reached, independent of the date.  相似文献

Precocious maturation among wild sea trout, Salmo trutta (L.), was studied in two small streams in south-western Sweden. The proportion of parr males varied between 17.9 and 57.0%. Parr males and immature individuals of the same age were compared with respect to length distribution, migratory tendency and seawater tolerance. Precocious males were, on average, longer than immature fish. Marking and recapture showed a reduced or inhibited migration tendency of parr males. The seawater tolerance of these was also consistently lower than for juveniles. The seasonal pattern in osmoregulatory ability was similar for both categories, with a peak during the smolt run.  相似文献

Within the populations of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus in Storvatn and Rungavatn, Norway, fish that attained the largest size in the late parr stage migrated as 4+ smolts, fish that attained a medium size became 5+ smolts, and the smallest parr became lake residents. Within the last 2 years of the parr stage, those that became anadromous had a lower growth rate during the winter and early summer than those that became resident, and vice versa in late summer. Thus, anadromous fish grew faster in the parr stage, but in years prior to migration, their growth pattern seemed to differ from that of parr that became resident. Due to early size differences between parr that became anadromous or resident, it is suggested that some of the basis for the decision to smoltify or not in charr depends on the growth rate through the whole parr stage, but with significant modification by the local environment. Rungavatn parr had a significantly higher population density (5 ×), higher lipid content and mortality, an earlier maturation, a lower rate of growth, and only one-third the degree of anadromy than those from Storvatn. It is suggested that the two charr populations have evolved different life-history adaptations due to unequal growth, energy allocation and competition opportunities in the lakes.  相似文献

Anadromous Atlantic salmon parr (Salmo salar) were captured from three Newfoundland lakes. Yearling and 2 year parr were captured most often in shallow water <2 m deep around lake perimeters and were not abundant at greater depths. The 3+ and 4+ parr age groups were rarely found inshore (<2 m) but were captured in deeper offshore areas. Though the parr population in one deep lake was too small to be estimated by mark-recapture, estimates of the yearlings plus 2+ age groups in two shallower lakes were 55 and 63 parr ha−1. respectively. No under yearlings were found in lake habitats. Parr density in the three study lakes varied inversely with mean lake depth. Lacustrine parr growth rate was greater than or equal to that of stream dwelling parr. It is concluded that some shallow lakes of Newfoundland provide major rearing areas for juvenile anadromous Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

At the breeding season (November) the mature male parr had a thicker epidermis than had the immature parr. In winter (February) there was no difference, while in May, at the smoltification period, the previously mature male parr had a thicker epidermis than the immature parr. In both categories of fish the epidermis was thinner in May than in November. The epidermal thickness in castrated male parr was the same as in immature parr. Treatment with 11-ketoandrostenedione (llkΔ4) increased epidermal thickness in castrated males. Treatment with testosterone and llkΔ4 increased epidermal thickness in previously mature males in spring. There was no development of anadromous secondary sexual characters (hooked lower jaw, adult nuptial colouration) in any male.  相似文献

The principal focus of this study was an examination of the relationship between diallelic variation at the MEP-2 * locus and growth and survival in Atlantic salmon parr. In addition, patterns of growth and survival among genotypes at the AAT-I *, IDDH-I * and ZDHP-2 * loci were also examined. Significant differences in growth were found among MEP-2 * genotypes, with * 100/ 100 homozygotes largest in one of two independent comparisons and the * 125/I25 homozygotes largest in the other. No growth differences were observed among genotypes at any other locus. Although no significant differences were found in survival among genotypes at any locus, results of joint analysis of the patterns of growth and survival among MEP-2 * genotypes were consistent with a model of positive size-selective mortality. The demonstration of growth differences among MEP-2 * genotypes in parr and smolts may indicate an association between selection on this locus in fresh water and previously reported differences in sea-age at maturity among MEP-2 * genotypes in Atlantic salmon.  相似文献
