The field of epigenetics is young and quickly expanding. During the last year alone, thousands of research articles considered epigenetic mechanisms and their phenotypic consequences in different animal and plant species. Various definitions have been given, though, as to what precisely is epigenetics. Recent ones take into consideration that chromatin at genes and chromosomal regions can be structurally organised by covalent modifications and nuclear proteins, and via RNA molecules, in order to achieve defined expression states that can be perpetuated. Such somatically and meiotically heritable effects on gene function have diverse biological and medical implications. In particular, they are known to be important in development. A recent discussion meeting in Paris at the French Academy of Sciences reviewed our current understanding of 'Epigenetics and Cellular Memory' and where this novel discipline in life sciences is heading.  相似文献

Plant diversity is currently being lost at an unprecedented rate, resulting in an associated decrease in ecosystem services. About a third of the world's vascular plant species face the threat of extinction due to a variety of devastating activities, including, over-harvesting and over exploitation, destructive agricultural and forestry practices, urbanization, environmental pollution, land-use changes, exotic invasive species, global climate change, and more. We therefore need to increase our efforts to develop integrative conservation approaches for plant species conservation. Botanical gardens devote their resources to the study and conservation of plants, as well as making the world's plant species diversity known to the public. These gardens also play a central role in meeting human needs and providing well-being. In this minireview, a framework for the integrated missions of botanical gardens, including scientific research, in/ex situ conservation, plant resource utilization, and citizen science are cataloged. By reviewing the history of the development of Kunming Botanical Garden, we illustrate successful species conservation approaches (among others, projects involving Camellia, Rhododendron, Magnolia, Begonia, Allium, Nepenthes, medicinal plants, ornamental plants, and Plant Species with Extreme Small Populations), as well as citizen science, and scientific research at Kunming Botanical Garden over the past 80 years. We emphasize that Kunming Botanical Garden focuses largely on the ex situ conservation of plants from Southwest China, especially those endangered, endemic, and economically important plant species native to the Yunnan Plateau and the southern Hengduan Mountains. We also discuss the future challenges and responsibilities of botanical gardens in a changing world, including:the negative effects of outbreeding and/or inbreeding depression; promoting awareness, study, and conservation of plant species diversity; accelerating global access to information about plant diversity; increasing capacity building and training activities. We hope this minireview can promote understanding of the role of botanical gardens.  相似文献

Live imaging is now a central component for the study of plant developmental processes. Currently, most techniques are extremely constraining: they rely on the marking of specific cellular structures which generally apply to model species because they require genetic transformations. The biospeckle laser (BSL) system was evaluated as an instrument to measure biological activity in plant tissues. The system allows collecting biospeckle patterns from roots which are grown in gels. Laser illumination has been optimized to obtain the images without undesirable specular reflections from the glass tube. Data on two different plant species were obtained and the ability of three different methods to analyze the biospeckle patterns are presented. The results showed that the biospeckle could provide quantitative indicators of the molecular activity from roots which are grown in gel substrate in tissue culture. We also presented a particular experimental configuration and the optimal approach to analyze the images. This may serve as a basis to further works on live BSL in order to study root development.  相似文献

The purpose of the present work is the study of ecdysteroid distribution in annual and perennial Silene species during development. The experimental approach included the measurement of ecdysteroid levels in different plant organs and an evaluation of the contribution of individual organs to the total amount of 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) produced by the plant. The highest concentrations of 20E were observed in reproductive organs. High levels were also found in leaves with lower levels in stems. Maximal ecdysteroid content for aerial parts was observed during periods of intense growth: at budding or flowering in annual species, and during vegetative growth or budding in perennial species. The contribution of the different organs to the overall ecdysteroid content changes during plant development. Leaves represent the main part of plant mass and 20E content. Reproductive organs represent a relatively small mass, but they contain high concentrations of ecdysteroids and, in terms of the amount of 20E they contain, their contribution is equal to that of stems. The first symposium on Alien Plant Invasions in Chile was held in southern Chile in November of 2002. Chile represents an interesting setting to study biological invasions because of its long history of introductions, and its high rate of endemisms that makes it more prone to invasions. However, little is known about plant invasions in Chile and the country lacks a clear policy on alien species. The speakers at the symposium discussed their research on several aspects of alien plant invasions in southern Chile and Argentina. They also elaborated a list of future challenges of plant invasion ecology for the area. The package of recommendations may be useful for other developing countries with similar state of knowledge of their flora and similar environmental and economic issues. We expect that this type of meeting will help to stimulate the scientific debate about invasion ecology and the development of coordinated research to answer local questions, while contributing to find generalities in plant invasion patterns and processes.  相似文献

Many plant species produce phytoecdysteroids (PEs: i.e. analogues of insect steroid hormones). There is increasing evidence that PEs are used as a chemical defence by plants against non-adapted insects and nematodes. PEs are good candidates for the development of an environmentally safe approach to crop protection. Most crop species do not accumulate PEs. However, many arguments support the idea that most, if not all, plant species have the genetic ability to produce PEs, but the biosynthetic pathway is not active. A better understanding of the PE biosynthetic pathway and its regulation is consequently necessary. Spinach is one of the very few crop plants which produce large amounts of PEs, of which 20-hydroxyecdysone is the major component. Labeling experiments with radiolabeled precursor (mevalonic acid), putative ecdysteroid intermediates and 20-hydroxyecdysone itself have allowed investigation of PE biosynthesis and transport during spinach development. Biosynthesis takes place in older leaf sets ("sources"), but not in the young developing ones, which in contrast accumulate (acting as "sinks") the PEs produced by the older leaves. PEs are thus continuously redistributed within the developing plant, as its leaf set number increases. The biosynthetic pathway has been analyzed using excised leaves and various labeled precursors, and a preferential sequence of the last steps has been established. Although they do not produce PEs, apical leaf sets are nevertheless able to perform several putative terminal steps of PE biosynthesis. The regulatory mechanisms of PE synthesis appear to involve a direct negative feedback of 20-hydroxyecdysone (the major PE in spinach) on its own synthesis; thus, a sustained synthesis in older leaves requires that they can export the PE they produce.  相似文献

This paper examines the functional relationships among species in an Australian rangeland community with mixed life forms. It follows a previous study (Walker and others 1999) that explored the role of dominant and minor species in maintaining functional diversity and resilience in a rangeland ecosystem. Unlike our previous results, which were based on estimates of five plant functional attributes, the dominant species in this second community apparently are functionally no more dissimilar to each other than to all other species. We suggest that the lack of clear results in mixed life form communities represents a confounding of the relationships between the “hard” attributes that actually govern how a plant performs in an ecosystem and the “soft” attributes that we use as surrogates. There are very few data on the hard functional attributes of plant species and consequently little information on precisely how the (soft) measurable traits are related to their imputed functions. What evidence there is shows that although the relationships are strong within life forms, they differ between life forms. This poses a problem for the development of research relating plant biodiversity to ecosystem function. Until such a database is developed, it will be very difficult to advance our understanding and measurement of functional diversity in mixed life form communities. In June 2015, the fourth European Workshop on Plant Chromatin took place in Uppsala, Sweden, bringing together 80 researchers studying various aspects of plant chromatin and epigenetics. The intricate relationships between plant chromatin dynamics and gene expression change, chromatin organization within the plant cell nucleus, and the impact of chromatin structure on plant development were discussed. Among the main highlights of the meeting were an ever-growing list of newly identified players in chromatin structure establishment and the development of novel tools and approaches to foster our understanding of chromatin-mediated gene regulation, taking into account the context of the plant cell nucleus and its architecture. In this report, we summarize some of the main advances and prospects of plant chromatin research presented at this meeting.  相似文献

Antibiotic and herbicide resistance genes are currently the most frequently used selectable marker genes for plant research and crop development. However, the use of antibiotics and herbicides must be carefully controlled because the degree of susceptibility to these compounds varies widely among plant species and because they can also affect plant regeneration. Therefore, new selectable marker systems that are effective for a broad range of plant species are still needed. Here, we report a simple and inexpensive system based on providing transgenic plant cells the capacity to convert a nonmetabolizable compound (phosphite, Phi) into an essential nutrient for cell growth (phosphate) trough the expression of a bacterial gene encoding a phosphite oxidoreductase (PTXD). This system is effective for the selection of Arabidopsis transgenic plants by germinating T0 seeds directly on media supplemented with Phi and to select transgenic tobacco shoots from cocultivated leaf disc explants using nutrient media supplemented with Phi as both a source of phosphorus and selective agent. Because the ptxD/Phi system also allows the establishment of large‐scale screening systems under greenhouse conditions completely eliminating false transformation events, it should facilitate the development of novel plant transformation methods.  相似文献

We analyzed the consequences of climate change and the increase in soil erosion, as well as their interaction on plant and soil properties in semiarid Mediterranean shrublands in Eastern Spain. Current models on drivers of biodiversity change predict an additive or synergistic interaction between drivers that will increase the negative effects of each one. We used a climatic gradient that reproduces the predicted climate changes in temperature and precipitation for the next 40 years of the wettest and coldest end of the gradient; we also compared flat areas with 20° steep hillslopes. We found that plant species richness and plant cover are negatively affected by climate change and soil erosion, which in turn negatively affects soil resistance to erosion, nutrient content and water holding capacity. We also found that plant species diversity correlates weakly with plant cover but strongly with soil properties related to fertility, water holding capacity and resistance to erosion. Conversely, these soil properties correlate weaker with plant species cover. The joint effect of climate change and soil erosion on plant species richness and soil characteristics is antagonistic. That is, the absolute magnitude of change is smaller than the sum of both effects. However, there is no interaction between climate change and soil erosion on plant cover and their effects fit the additive model. The differences in the interaction model between plant cover and species richness supports the view that several soil properties are more linked to the effect that particular plant species have on soil processes than to the quantity and quality of the plant cover and biomass they support. Our findings suggest that plant species richness is a better indicator than plant cover of ecosystems services related with soil development and protection to erosion in semiarid Mediterranean climates.  相似文献

Biodiversity, including plant species diversity, is threatened worldwide as a result of anthropogenic pressures such as an increase of pollutants and climate change. Rare species in particular are on the verge of becoming extinct. It is still unclear as to why some plant species are rare and others are not. Are they rare due to: intrinsic reasons, dispersal capacity, the effects of management or abiotic circumstances? Habitat preference of rare plant species may play an important role in determining why some species are rare. Based on an extensive data set of soil parameters we investigated if rarity is due to a narrow habitat preference for abiotic soil parameters. For 23 different abiotic soil parameters, of which the most influential were groundwater-table, soil-pH and nutrient-contents, we estimated species responses for common and rare species. Based on the responses per species we calculated the range of occurrence, the range between the 5 and 95 percentile of the response curve giving the habitat preference. Subsequently, we calculated the average response range for common and rare species. In addition, we designed a new graphic in order to provide a better means for presentation of the results. The habitat preferences of rare species for abiotic soil conditions are significantly narrower than for common species. Twenty of the twenty-three abiotic parameters showed on average significantly narrower habitat preferences for rare species than for common species; none of the abiotic parameters showed on average a narrower habitat preference for common species. The results have major implications for the conservation of rare plant species; accordingly management and nature development should be focussed on the maintenance and creation of a broad range of environmental conditions, so that the requirements of rare species are met. The conservation of (abiotic) gradients within ecosystems is particularly important for preserving rare species.  相似文献

Adult oviposition preferences are expected to correlate with host plant suitability for the development of their offspring. For most lepidopteran species, this is particularly important as the hatching neonate larvae of many species are relatively immobile. Thus, the site of oviposition chosen by a female adult can greatly influence the probability of survival for her offspring. In the present study, we investigated the oviposition preference of adult Trichoplusia ni moths for six plant species to determine whether they could accurately rank the suitability of the plants for larval development. We also compared oviposition preferences to neonate larval acceptance and preference to determine whether the adult host range matched that of larval diet breath. Our results indicate that in two-choice and no-choice tests adult T. ni were able to rank the plants accurately, with the exception of anise hyssop. However, when given a choice of all six plants together, they laid more eggs on a plant that was not suitable for larval survival. Larvae accepted and fed on all plants in no-choice tests, and accurately ranked them according to larval performance. We conclude that neonate larvae are better able than adults to rank plants according to larval performance, and that larval diet breadth is wider than the range of plants accepted by adults. We also provide a discussion of the reduced accuracy of adult oviposition preference with increased plant choices.  相似文献

Strigolactones are an ancient group of plant signalling molecules. They play a critical role in the rhizosphere where they facilitate the formation of symbioses with fungi, crucial for the acquisition of plant nutrients in over 80 % of land plant species. Strigolactones have also been exploited by parasitic weeds as a rhizosphere signal indicating the presence of a host species, resulting in devastating losses in some agricultural systems. Recently, they have also been shown to act endogenously as plant hormones controlling shoot branching and have been implicated in a wide range of other physiological processes, including root growth, root-hair elongation, adventitious rooting, secondary growth, photomorphogenesis, seed germination, nodulation, and protonemal development in mosses. Here, we discuss the evidence for the involvement of strigolactones as endogenous regulators of these processes and highlight some examples where the evidence is inconclusive. One major gap in our understanding is the identity of the endogenous strigolactone(s) that are biologically active. A discussion of the interactions between the different plant hormones and the possible role of strigolactones as integrators of the root-to-shoot balance, nutrient acquisition, and thus resource allocation illustrates some important future directions for this area of research.  相似文献

The response of species numbers and density of Collembola to manipulation of plant species richness (1, 2, 4, 8, 32 species) and number of plant functional groups (grasses, legumes and non-legume herbs) was studied in an experimental grassland at the Swiss BIODEPTH site (Lupsingen, Switzerland) in October 1997. Plant species richness or number of plant functional groups did not affect total diversity of Collembola, however, the number of Collembola species increased in the presence of legumes and the grass Trisetum flavescens . The abundance of Protaphorura armata increased but that of Hypogastruridae/Neanuridae significantly decreased with increasing number of plant functional groups. Other groups including the herbivorous Symphypleona did not respond to plant species richness and plant functional groups. Possibly, Hypogastruridae/Neanuridae species are weak competitors declining in density if the density of other Collembola groups increase. In general, the effect of the number of plant functional groups on the densities of collembolan taxa was stronger than that of plant species richness. Changes in Collembola density and diversity in part was likely caused by increased soil microbial and fine root biomass in treatments with higher plant functional group diversity. The presence of legumes resulted in an increase in the densities of total Collembola, Symphypleona/Neelipleona and Isotomidae indicating that they benefited from the high litter quality and the increased microbial biomass in the rhizosphere of legumes. The results suggest that microbivorous soil invertebrates are controlled by food quality rather than quantity. Furthermore, they indicate that presence of certain plant species and functional groups may be more important for collembolan community structure than the diversity of plant species and functional groups per se.  相似文献

Plant signalling: the opportunities and dangers of chemical communication   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Adler FR 《Biology letters》2011,7(2):161-162
The notion of chemical communication between plants and other organisms has gone from being viewed as a fringe idea to an accepted ecological phenomenon only recently. An Organized Oral Session at the August 2010 Ecological Society of America meeting in Pittsburgh examined the role of plant signalling both within and between plants, with speakers addressing the remarkably wide array of effects that plant signals have on plant physiology, species interactions and entire communities. In addition to the familiar way that plants communicate with mutualists like pollinators and fruit dispersers through both chemical and visual cues, speakers at this session described how plants communicate with themselves, with each other, with herbivores and with predators of those herbivores. These plant signals create a complex odour web superimposed upon the more classical food web itself, with its own dynamics in the face of exotic species and rapid community assembly and disassembly.  相似文献

Road verges in the Prince Albert district, South Africa were examined to determine whether they are important refugia for plant species in the Karoo biome. Vascular plants at 50 sites on road verges were compared with those plant communities in the adjacent grazed rangelands. Verges were found to support a greater mean number of species, total plant cover, and number of individual plants. Road verges were found to contain 11 unique species compared with 20 unique species in rangelands. Plant community composition varied with more forbs and succulents on the verge and more shrubs in the rangeland. Significantly greater cover of unpalatable plants was found on the ungrazed road verge, and no difference in palatable and highly palatable plant cover was recorded, indicating that herbivory is not a major driver in defining community differences in these environments. No significant differences in soil moisture or texture were found between verge and rangeland. We argue that road maintenance and construction activities have an over-riding controlling influence on road verge community composition. Although it is not possible to discount the possibility that road verges provide an important refuge for certain species, it appears that they are disturbed environments that do not contribute significantly to the plant conservation needs of this biome.  相似文献
