While ecogeographic variation in adult human body proportions has been extensively explored, relatively less attention has been paid to the effect of Bergmann's and Allen's rules on human body shape during growth. The relationship between climate and immature body form is particularly important, as immature mortality is high, mechanisms of thermoregulation differ between young and mature humans, and immature body proportions fluctuate due to basic parameters of growth. This study explores changes in immature ecogeographic body proportions via analyses of anthropometric data from children included in Eveleth and Tanner's (1976) Worldwide Variation in Human Growth, as well as limb proportion measurements in eight different skeletal samples. Moderate to strong correlations exist between climatic data and immature stature, weight, BMI, and bi-iliac breadth; these relationships are as strong, if not stronger, in immature individuals as they are in adults. Correlations between climate and trunk height relative to stature are weak or nonexistent. Altitude also has significant effects on immature body form, with children from higher altitudes displaying smaller statures and lower body weights. Brachial and crural indices remain constant over the course of growth and display consistent, moderate correlations with latitude across ontogeny that are just as high as those detected in adults. The results of this study suggest that while some features of immature body form, such as bi-iliac breadth and intralimb indices, are strongly dictated by ecogeographic principles, other characteristics of immature body proportions are influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors such as nutrition and basic constraints of growth.  相似文献

The phenotypic expression of adult body size and shape results from synergistic interactions between hereditary factors and environmental conditions experienced during growth. Variation in body size and shape occurs even in genetically relatively homogeneous groups, due to different occurrence, duration, and timing of growth insults. Understanding the causes and patterns of intrapopulation variation can foster meaningful information on early life conditions in living and past populations. This study assesses the pattern of biological variation in body size and shape attributable to sex and social status in a medieval Italian population. The sample includes 52 (20 female, 32 male) adult individuals from the medieval population of Trino Vercellese, Italy. Differences in element size and overall body size (skeletal height and body mass) were assessed through Monte Carlo methods, while univariate non-parametric tests and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were employed to examine segmental and overall body proportions. Discriminant Analysis was employed to determine the predictive value of individual skeletal elements for social status in the population. Our results highlight a distinct pattern in body size and shape variation in relation to status and sex. Male subsamples exhibit significant postcranial variation in body size, while female subsamples express smaller, nonsignificant differences. The analysis of segmental proportions highlighted differences in trunk/lower limb proportions between different status samples, and PCA indicated that in terms of purely morphological variation high status males were distinct from all other groups. The pattern observed likely resulted from a combination of biological factors and cultural practices.  相似文献

The European cave bear evolved during the Middle Pleistocene and adapted to mountain environments. Earlier workers have described the cave bear as a robust bear. In this study the cave bears limb bone morphology is compared to the limb bone morphology of extant bears. Body mass estimates for the cave bear are made both based on different limb bone characters and based on dental and cranial characters. The shafts are wider in the cave bear limb bones than in the extant bear limb bones, and consequently the shaft widths give higher weight estimates to the cave bear than the other dimensions. The widened shafts are suggested to be a special adaptation (of presently unknown significance) rather than an indicator of an increased body mass.  相似文献

Representatives of the various Stages (1–9) in the metamorphosis and short adult life of the brook lamprey, Lampetra planeri , were used to provide quantitative data to describe the pattern of changes that take place during this period of the life cycle. During the transformation of the oral hood into an oral disc, this ventral region of the snout first declines in length before increasing markedly. The branchial region declines in length and remains relatively smaller than in the ammocoete, a feature probably correlated with the concomitant internal changes in the pharynx which permit a change from a unidirectional to a tidal respiratory flow. The eye increases in size only through the initial Stages (1–5). The main period of fin enlargement occurs rather later in metamorphosis than the above changes.
During maturation the two initially separate dorsal fins increase further in height and eventually become separated only by a notch. Differences between the two sexes are found in the relative size of the disc and fins, the larger structures of the male probably being related to their greater activity in spawning behaviour. Measurements on metamorphosed L. fluviatilis confirm that in this species the eye and disc are relatively larger than in L. planeri. Data are presented which illustrate that in collections taken during the metamorphosis of both species the males are smaller and slightly more numerous than the females and that transformation is initiated at a longer length in L. planeri than in L. fluviatilis .  相似文献

Sex differences in resource utilization by the peacock blenny   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper presents data on the seasonal variation of gonadosomatic, hepatosomatic and feeding indices in nesting males, females and female-like males of the blenniid fish Salaria pavo . Eviscerated condition factors, female fecundity and feeding rates are also presented. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that females maximize their feeding rates during reproduction, converting food into eggs through repeated spawning. Nesting males feed at a very low rate during the breeding season. It is argued that one major component of the reproductive costs in these males is the reduction of feeding opportunities. Female-like males present lower reproductive costs, which probably reflects the compromise between fertilizing some eggs and growing.  相似文献

Opportunities to assess morphological allometry in small-bodied human populations are rare. The foragers of the Later Stone Age of the South African Cape are characteristically small-bodied. Previous studies have shown that during the period of ca. 3500 to 2000 years BP (uncalibrated (14) C dates), the regional population shows transient reduced stature, body mass, and cranial size, a pattern that has been tentatively tied to demographic pressure on resources. This study examines the relationships among cranial size (centroid size) and body size (femoral length, femoral head diameter, and bi-iliac breadth) during the second half of the Holocene (N = 62). Reduced major axis regression indicates negative allometry of cranial centroid size with body size. Residuals (from ordinary least squares regression of cranial centroid size on body size) are regressed on radiocarbon date to examine temporal changes in the relationship between cranial and body size. Cranial and pelvic sizes are most conserved through time, while more ancient skeletons possess shorter femora and smaller femoral heads. The relationship between cranial centroid size and femoral length shows larger and more variable residuals at more recent dates, indicating a greater or more variable disassociation between cranial size and stature relative to more ancient skeletons. A similar, but nonsignificant relationship exists between cranial size and bi-iliac breadth. These results provide insights into the use of aspects of body size and proportionality in the assessment of health in past populations.  相似文献

Diversity of human body size and shape is often biogeographically interpreted in association with climatic conditions. According to Bergmann's and Allen's rules, populations in regions with a cold climate are expected to display an overall larger body and smaller/shorter extremities than those in warm/hot environments. In the present study, the skeletal limb size and proportions of prehistoric Jomon hunter‐gatherers, who extensively inhabited subarctic to subtropical areas in the ancient Japanese archipelago, were examined to evaluate whether or not the inter‐regional differences follow such ecogeographic patterns. Results showed that the Jomon intralimb proportions including relative distal limb lengths did not differ significantly among five regions from northern Hokkaido to the southern Okinawa Islands. This suggests a limited co‐variability of the intralimb proportions with climate, particularly within genealogically close populations. In contrast, femoral head breadth (associated with body mass) and skeletal limb lengths were found to be significantly and positively correlated with latitude, suggesting a north‐south geographical cline in the body size. This gradient therefore comprehensively conforms to Bergmann's rule, and may stem from multiple potential factors such as phylogenetic constraints, microevolutionary adaptation to climatic/geographic conditions during the Jomon period, and nutritional and physiological response during ontogeny. Specifically, the remarkably small‐bodied Jomon in the Okinawa Islands can also be explained as an adjustment to subtropical and insular environments. Thus, the findings obtained in this study indicate that Jomon people, while maintaining fundamental intralimb proportions, displayed body size variation in concert with ambient surroundings. Sex differences in aging and longevity have been widely observed, with females consistently outliving males across human populations. However, the mechanisms driving these disparities remain poorly understood. In this study, we explored the influence of post-pubertal testicular effects on sex differences in aging by prepubertally castrating genetically heterogeneous (UM-HET3) mice, a unique mouse model that emulates human sex differences in age-related mortality. Prepubertal castration eliminated the longevity disparity between sexes by reducing the elevated early- to mid-life mortality rate observed in males and extending their median lifespan to match that of females. Additionally, castration extended the duration of body weight growth and attenuated the inverse correlation between early-age body weight and lifespan in males, aligning their growth trajectories with those of females. Our findings suggest that post-pubertal testicular actions in genetically diverse mice are primarily responsible for sex differences in longevity as well as growth trajectories. These findings offer a foundation for further investigation into the fundamental mechanisms driving sex-specific aging patterns and the development of potential pro-longevity interventions.  相似文献

Human females, unlike most mammals, are sexually active outside of fertile periods. This decoupling of sexual behavior from its conceptive function has had an enormous impact on human social relationships, and yet we know little about why there was selection for nonconceptive mating. Here we examine one form of nonconceptive mating, the mating that occurs during pregnancy or post‐conceptive (PC) mating, in wild western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla). Using a near complete mating record for five females during gestation, we show that pregnant females varied in the timing and frequency of mating, and used PC mating conditionally, synchronizing copulations to occur on days when other females mated, and refraining from mating for lengthy periods when no other females mated. As pregnant females mated exclusively with the same male before and after conception, and mated in response to group female (and not male) behavior, we conclude that western gorillas used PC mating as a form of female competition, and not to confuse paternity or to obtain immediate benefits from the male, as suggested earlier. The male initiated copulations preferentially with females of high rank, rather than distinguishing between pregnant and cycling females. Therefore, PC mating appears to be a strategy by which high‐ranking pregnant females attempt to minimize male interest in other females, while reinforcing their own status and potentially delaying conception in others. These findings indicate that female‐mating competition is more important than considered earlier, and may be a factor in the evolution of nonconceptive mating in humans. Am. J. Anthropometric dimensions of 1520 students of Biology at University of Athens in Greece were analysed to determine secular changes of height and body proportions during a 20 year period. Since, 1970, means of standing height, subischial length, and cormic index have been increased, although the rate of increase from 1986 to 1990 has been rather slow. On the contrary the mean sitting height is stable, and cormic/ subischial index have been declined during the same period. There are no data for comparing this sample with the general population, but we suppose that these changes in the body formation is common as a result of the modern way of life.  相似文献

In this experiment, we assessed the effect of amino acid (AA) intake restriction in entire male Yorkshire pigs between 15 and 38 kg BW (restriction phase) on BW gain, body composition and plasma levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), cortisol, insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), growth hormone (GH) and leptin during the subsequent re-alimentation phase. During the restriction phase, 36 pigs were allotted to one of two dietary treatments: adequate AA intake (control) or AA-limiting diets (AA-30%). Thereafter, pigs were fed common non-limiting diets up to 110 kg BW. Throughout the experiment, pigs were scale-fed at 90% of the estimated voluntary daily digestible energy intake. At the end of the restriction phase, pigs on AA-30% had lesser BW gain (650 v. 784 g/day; P < 0.001), loin area (LA; 12.2 v. 14.2 cm2; P < 0.001), BUN (4.6 v. 6.3 mg/dl; P < 0.02), lesser plasma levels of IGF-I (440 v. 640 ng/m; P < 0.001) and cortisol (8.2 v. 19.2 μg/dl; P < 0.001), greater backfat thickness (BF; 7.56 v. 6.56 mm; P < 0.02), and greater plasma levels of leptin (2.7 v. 1.8 ng/ml; P = 0.027) and GH (3.3 v. 2.0 ng/ml; P = 0.05) than pigs on control. During the re-alimentation phase, previously restricted pigs showed full compensatory growth (CG) in terms of BW gain (1170 v. 1077 g/day; P < 0.002), whole-body protein deposition (Pd) (179 v. 163 g/day; P < 0.001) as well as physical and chemical body composition (whole-body lipid to body protein mass ratio, LB/PB; 1.14 v. 1.15; P > 0.10). Besides GH at 45 kg BW (4.2 v. 2.4 ng/ml; P = 0.066), there were no effects of previous AA intake restriction on leptin, IGF-I and BUN during the re-alimentation phase (P > 0.10). Plasma cortisol and IGF-I levels may act as an indicator of AA-induced restriction in Pd in growing pigs. Plasma BUN level does not appear as a sensitive indicator for compensatory Pd. Plasma leptin and GH levels allow for the involvement of the brain in controlling chemical body composition. Full CG was observed during the energy-dependent phase of Pd in growing pigs and might be driven by a target LB/PB, possibly mediated via plasma leptin, IGF-I and GH levels.  相似文献

Japanese macaques inhabit a relatively cold environment and females of this species could have developed strategies of energy economy to face the sometimes-harsh seasonal conditions of temperate climates, as well as reproductive costs, and thus regulate their energy balance. Here, we explore the relationship between nutritional status, body composition, seasonality, and reproductive status using isotope-labeled water, anthropometric measurements, and leptin assays from 14 captive female Japanese macaques. Our results indicated that body mass provided the best predictor of fat-free mass and fat mass. These females varied in estimated percent body fat between 8 and 25% (18% on average at the beginning of the mating season and 13% during the birth season). Higher body mass and body fat content were observed at the beginning of the mating season, which supports the hypothesis that individual females need to attain a sufficient physical condition to cover energy costs associated with mating activity, and to survive under severe ecological conditions in winter with high thermoregulatory costs. We found a relationship between conception rates and energetic condition or body fat, with females that conceived during one mating season being fatter after the end of their previous mating season. Together, these results suggest that, even in captive settings with constant food availability, seasonal breeding entails relatively high energy costs, and that females with higher energy status could invest more in reproductive activities and could afford to reproduce more rapidly.  相似文献

We have analyzed the growth allometry of external body proportions in Efe pygmies from Zaire and combined these data with values from the literature for comparable dimensions in adult pygmies and nonpygmies. We sequentially tested the hypotheses that adult proportion differences between 1) male vs. female Efe, and 2) pygmies vs. nonpygmies result from ontogenetic scaling, or the differential extension of common patterns of growth allometry. Results indicate an almost complete concordance of allometric trajectories for male and female Efe. These preliminary analyses also strongly suggest that adult nonpygmy Africans generally differ from pygmies in their terminal size and correlated allometric consequences, rather than in more fundamental alterations of underlying patterns of growth. Biacromial diameter emerges as the measurement most likely to depart from this general pattern. These results provide further evidence that shifts in systemic growth hormones yielding differences in terminal overall body size may be accompanied by global and coordinated allometric transformations. Certain proportion differences previously interpreted by some as specific evidence of primitive retention in pygmies in fact reflect simple growth allometric correlates of the derived rapid size decrease in these groups. Selected divergent body proportions characterizing adult pygmies, previously interpreted by some as independent evidence of climatic adaptation, also reflect such allometric correlates of ontogenetic scaling. We critically assess arguments that the small overall body size of pygmies was specifically selected for reasons of thermoregulatory efficiency, and consider an alternative or complementary scenario, based on selection for small size in order to reduce caloric requirements. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Body size is directly linked to key life history traits such as growth, fecundity, and survivorship. Identifying the causes of body size variation is a critical task in ecological and evolutionary research. Body size variation along altitudinal gradients has received considerable attention; however, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we compared the growth rate and age structure of toad‐headed lizards (Phrynocephalus vlangalii) from two populations found at different elevations in the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau. We used mark‐recapture and skeletochronological analysis to identify the potential proximate causes of altitudinal variation in body size. Lizards from the high‐elevation site had higher growth rates and attained slightly larger adult body sizes than lizards from the low‐elevation site. However, newborns produced by high‐elevation females were smaller than those by low‐elevation females. Von Bertalanffy growth estimates predicted high‐elevation individuals would reach sexual maturity at an earlier age and have a lower mean age than low‐elevation individuals. Relatively lower mean age for the high‐elevation population was confirmed using the skeletochronological analysis. These results support the prediction that a larger adult body size of high‐elevation P. vlangalii results from higher growth rates, associated with higher resource availability.  相似文献

We tested for differences in the predicted optimal ages at first maturity in brook charr ( Salvelinus fontinalis ) in Freshwater River, Newfoundland, when life-history data were collated based on the marker-assisted estimation of the relationship between body size and reproductive success rather than using fecundity as a surrogate for reproductive success. Jointly with capture–recapture data to estimate the growth and survival costs of reproduction, we found that weak relationships between body size and reproductive success generate selection against delayed maturation. This finding would not have held for females if the relationship between body size and fecundity had been used as a surrogate for the relationship between body size and reproductive success. This shows that predictions of optimal life histories can be qualitatively changed when using molecular markers to directly evaluate age- and/or size-specific effects of body size on reproductive success.  相似文献

Sexual selection theory predicts that paternal quality should drive female investment in progeny. We tested whether polyandrous female side-blotched lizards, Uta stansburiana, would adjust within-clutch progeny investment according to sire phenotypes. In two different years, polyandrous females selectively used sperm from larger sires to produce sons and used sperm from smaller sires to produce daughters. This cryptic sperm choice had significant effects on progeny survival to maturity that were consistent with sexually antagonistic effects associated with sire body size. Large sires produced sons with high viability and small sires produced daughters with high viability. These results are consistent with our previous findings that alleles for male body size have different fitness effects in male and female progeny. Breeding experiments in the laboratory indicate that results from the wild are more likely due to female choice than biased sperm production by males. Our results demonstrate highly refined gender-specific female choice for sperm and indicate that sire body size may signal the quality of sons or daughters that a sire will produce.  相似文献

The individual reproductive output of the stream-dwelling flatworm Dugesia gonocephala was investigated. Various measures of reproductive success were related to body size. (I) For the first 30 days in the laboratory small individuals produced no cocoons, individuals of intermediate size produced unfertilized cocoons and large individuals usually produced fertilized cocoons. (II) In individuals that produced a cocoon, no correlation was found between the number of cocoons produced in one month and body size. (III) Large individuals, however, produced larger cocoons. This was not due to the fact that unfertilized cocoons were smaller. (IV) Large cocoons tended to contain more young. (V) The average size of young hatching from large cocoons was larger. (VI) Large individuals produced their first cocoon soon after their arrival in the laboratory and seemed to have a higher chance of producing a fertilized first cocoon. (VII) A trade-off existed between producing many small versus few large young.  相似文献

1. The puffin, a long-lived seabird, was studied on the Isle of May, East Scotland between 1990 and 1992. During two of these years, parental effort was experimentally decreased by supplementary feeding of young. This aimed to identify inter-year reproductive costs, and show whether they took the form of reduced adult survival, reduced fledging success and/or a reduction in the 'quality' of offspring in the following year.
2. The feeding treatment significantly reduced the daily number of feeds delivered by experimental parents by 67% in 1990 and 87% in 1991.
3. The proportions of experimental and control parents returning to the colony in the year following manipulation did not differ significantly, although in 1991, 2·5 times as many controls (young unfed) as experimental birds (young fed) failed to return.
4. The fledging success of experimental pairs in the year following manipulation (68%) was significantly higher than that of controls (24%).
5. Experimental pairs raised young with significantly higher body condition (Residual Peak Mass) than that of controls in the year following manipulation (1992).
6. Experimental parents did not differ from controls in their body condition (Lipid Reserve Mass) or rate of reserve depletion, either in the year of manipulation or in the following breeding season; hence there was no evidence for a role of the measured component of body condition in the cost mechanism.
7. The study demonstrated inter-year reproductive costs for puffins and supported the hypothesis that long-lived species reduce the 'quality' of their offspring or abandon a breeding attempt rather than compromise their survival and future opportunities to reproduce.  相似文献
