The toxicity of boric acid solutions to adult Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say, Culex nigripalpus Theobald, and Aedes albopictus Skuse was evaluated in the laboratory. Median lethal concentrations (LC50 in %) at 24-h exposure for male and female An. quadrimaculatus were 0.317 and 0.885, respectively; for Cx. nigripalpus, 0.273 and 0.560, respectively; and for Ae. albopictus, 0.174 and 0.527, respectively. The LC50 values at 48-h exposure for male and female An. quadrimaculatus were 0.101 and 0.395, respectively; for Cx. nigripalpus, 0.098 and 0.255, respectively; and for Ae. albopictus, 0.078 and 0.244, respectively. In laboratory tests, access for 48 h to sucrose (10%) water containing 1% boric acid (boric acid bait) resulted in 98% mortality in blood fed, gravid, and parous Ae. albopictus. When offered a choice between boric acid bait and sucrose water, 52% of male and 33% of female Ae. albopictus ingested sufficient boric acid bait in 24 h to cause death; after 48 h, respective percent mortalities were 88 and 58%. In outdoor tests, in a walk-in screened cage (156 m3) containing 1,250 female Ae. albopictus, mosquito biting rates on the exposed forearm of a human subject in 3-min exposure were reduced > or = 78% for the boric acid bait treatment, compared with a sucrose water control.  相似文献

Rhizobia are attracted to localized sites on legume roots.   总被引:12,自引:5,他引:7       下载免费PDF全文
Clouds of Rhizobium meliloti were attracted to localized sites on the surface of the infectible region of alfalfa roots. This behavior, which required active motility and chemotaxis, was not species specific. Correlation between the behavior of various mutants and their competitiveness for nodulation suggests that cloud formation has a role in the infection of host legume roots by rhizobia.  相似文献

The efficacy of baiting as a pest control method relies on the bait appealing to the pest species. In the case of wood-eating termites, bait stations should be designed to encourage termite presence and to maximize their consumption of bait matrix in order to expedite control in minimal time. A field experiment examined the effect of bait size (one large bait or four small baits of equivalent total size, with commensurate inspection and replacement schedules), compaction (tightly rolled or loosely folded) and composition (paper only or paper plus wood) on termite presence and on untreated bait paper removal rates over four months. All three factors were significant, with bait size the most important factor, followed by compaction and then composition. The least effective baits were small, compacted (rolled) paper-only baits with monthly inspections; these had the highest abandonment rate (70%) and had the least paper removed (mean of 24 g). The most effective baits were large, folded paper-plus-wood baits with inspections at two months; these had the lowest abandonment rate (20%) and had the highest paper removal (mean of 112 g). The more than four-fold difference between these baits types demonstrates that bait efficacy can be altered considerably merely by changing bait design without adding new ingredients to the bait matrix.  相似文献

In poisoning operations, sublethal consumption of the toxin, can produce bait aversion. This decreases the effect of the poisoning and may create problems due to the presence of uneaten toxin in the environment. The use of new bait additives may prevent aversion development. Here I report the effects of two bait additives, corticosterone and mifepristone, in altering bait aversion development in rats exposed to the widely used poison, monofluoroacetate (1080). Corticosterone is a glucocorticoid hormone, released in response to stress. Mifepristone (Ru 38486), inhibits the actions of this hormone. Imposed stress as well as administration of corticosterone, decreased consumption. Concurrent administration of mifepristone prevented these decreases. Mifepristone in low doses increased aversion in stressed, but not unstressed rats. At high doses, mifepristone both increased consumption and decreased aversion in all rats following exposure to 1080. Administration of corticosterone also produced dose-dependent effects on aversion. At low doses in unstressed rats corticosterone, alone, increased aversion, while at high doses in all rats it decreased aversion. Stress, and the hormonal outcome of this state, may thus contribute to aversion by influencing both consumption and aversion development.  相似文献

In tsetse both sexes feed exclusively on the blood of vertebrates for a few minutes every 2-3 days. Tsetse flies seek cover from high temperatures to conserve energy and plants provide shelter for tsetse in all the biotopes they occupy. Recently, tsetse have taken cover in plantations and under the invasive bush Lantana camara that has invaded large areas of the tsetse fly belt of Africa. Flies from such refugia are implicated in sleeping sickness epidemics. In a wind tunnel we show that both foliage and an extract of volatiles from foliage of L. camara attract three tsetse spp. from different habitats: Glossina fuscipes fuscipes (riverine), G. brevipalpis (sylvatic) and G. pallidipes (savannah). Gas chromatography analysis of volatiles extracted from leaves and flowers of L. camara coupled to electroantennograme recordings show that 1-octen-3-ol and beta-caryophyllene are the major chemostimuli for the antennal receptor cells of the three tsetse spp. studied. A binary mixture of these products attracted these flies in the wind tunnel. The gas chromatography linked electroantennograme analysis of the L. camara extracts also show that the antennal receptor cells of the three tsetse spp. respond similarly to groups of volatiles derived from the major biosynthetic and catabolic pathways of plants, i.e. to mono- and sesquiterpenes, to lipoxidation products and to aromatics. Mixtures of these plant volatiles also attracted tsetse in the wind tunnel. These findings show that tsetse flies have conserved a strong sensitivity to volatile secondary products of plants, underlining the fundamental role of vegetation in tsetse survival.  相似文献

The effectiveness of Feracol?, a possum control paste bait containing 0.8% cholecalciferol, as a rodenticide has been assessed in cage and field trials. Caged rats were provided with toxic bait in choice and no-choice tests. Feracol? was readily eaten when presented as the sole food source or with other food, and was effective at killing rats in both situations. Wild-caught and laboratory rats (n =?35), comprising both ship (Rattus rattus) and Norway rats (R.?norvegicus), were presented with 30 g of Feracol? alone or with an equivalent toxic bait over 48 h. Thirty-four rats died in an average of 4.0 days. Having established that the paste, originally designed for possum control, is also an effective rodenticide for rat control, field trials were initiated with the paste delivered in the field in Philproof? and Striker? bait stations. Monitoring of rat numbers before and after application of toxic bait was undertaken at three trial sites, Lions Hut, Mangaone and Pakoakoa, in Te Urewera National Park in the North Island of New?Zealand. Rat population density was assessed using tracking tunnels. Philproof? bait stations containing 200 g of Feracol? were placed 50 m apart on grids at Lions Hut and monitoring was undertaken at one location per hectare using tracking tunnels. At Mangaone and Pakoakoa, two Striker? bait stations containing 18 g of Feracol? were sited at 25-m intervals on lines 150 m apart, and monitoring was undertaken with five lines of 10 tunnels at 50-m intervals. At Lions Hut, rat tracking decreased from 78% to 3% of tunnels tracked; at Mangaone the reduction was 51% to 0%; and at Pakoakoa from 36% to 0%. These trials demonstrate that Feracol? is effective at reducing both moderate and high concentrations of ship rats in the Philproof? and Striker? bait station delivery systems.  相似文献

Carpenterworm (Lepidoptera, Cossidae) larvae bore into trunks of the oak Quercus acutissima, thereby promoting sap exudation, and prey on insects attracted to tree sap. We examined the interactions between carpenterworms and sap-attracted insects to elucidate community-level consequences of carpenterworms and to estimate the relative magnitudes of their direct and indirect effects on community structure. Species richness, total abundance, and Simpson’s index of diversity (1/D) in tree sap communities were all significantly higher in carpenterworm-associated patches (sap-exuding patches that contained either larvae or larval nests) than in patches without evidence of carpenterworms. Abundance was also significantly higher in carpenterworm-associated patches for 10 out of 14 taxonomic groups, and this difference was much greater in the following groups that are sensitive to resource increases: drosophilid flies (Drosophilidae), sap beetles (Nitidulidae), and rove beetles (Staphylinidae). These results indicate that carpenterworms increase community size indirectly by increasing resource abundance, which is supported by the results of structural equation modeling (SEM). SEM also revealed that the direct effect of carpenterworms on species richness was weaker than their indirect effect, suggesting that predation by carpenterworms does not determine community structure. Similarly, carpenterworms can increase the abundance of some taxa by increasing resource abundance, and the predation pressure from carpenterworms on most taxa may be minor. 1. Mosquitoes were sampled with five suction traps, from May to October 1983, at a forest site in south-central Sweden. 2. Twenty-three species of mosquitoes were identified among the total of 3108 females collected: 4% of them in an unbaited trap, 3% in a trap baited with two frogs, 24% with a guinea-pig, 28% with a hen and 40% in a trap baited with a rabbit. 3. The dominant species of Culicidae trapped were 39% Aedes communis (De Geer), 21% Ae. cinereus Meigen, 14% Coquillettidia richiardii (Ficalbi), 8% Ae. punctor (Kirby) and 4% Culiseta morsitans (Theobald). 4. Aedes annulipes (Meigen), Ae. cantans (Meigen), Ae. cinereus, Ae. communis and Ae. punctor were mostly attracted to the rabbit, whereas Culiseta morsitans, Culex pipiens L. and/or Cx torrentium Martini were strongly ornithophilic. 5. Based on these and previously published data the ecological and behavioural potential of the mosquitoes to transmit Sindbis, Inkoo, Tahyna and Batai viruses, tularaemia (caused by Francisella tularensis) and Ixodes-borne borreliosis (caused by Borrelia burgdorferi) in Fennoscandia is discussed. 6. The data support the hypothesis that Sindbis virus, which is enzootic in bird populations in Fennoscandia, is vectored between birds by Cx pipiens/torrentium and Cs. morsitans, and that abundant Aedes spp., particularly Ae. cinereus, which feed on both birds and mammals, are primary link vectors from infective birds to man and other mammals.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to compare the effectiveness of chemical meat bait traps and basic meat bait traps for collecting adult flies. Bait traps used to collect these species can be damaged by anthropogenic or environmental effects. In this study, chemical meat bait traps and basic meat bait traps were hung from trees in the garden of the Ankara University Forensic Sciences Institute. This activity was carried out on the first Monday of each month for nine months. During the study, 1894 specimens were collected. Of all these species, 1787 (94.35%) were obtained from chemical meat bait traps (CMBTs), while 107 (5.65%) were obtained from basic meat bait traps (BMBTs). To determine the diversity of species in CMBT and BMBT sample groups in our study, Shannon Wiener and Simpson diversity and dominance indices were used. Shannon Evenness Index was calculated to determine the relationship between species community‐density. Cluster analysis provided a summary of the similarity in species composition of different regions. The CMBT and BMBT trap groups similarity/dissimilarity feature was checked using Bray–Curtis cluster analysis. The number of species collected from CMBTs was considerably higher than in BMBTs. The results of this study will help researchers to save time. In addition, it should be kept in mind that thiamethoxam is harmful to the environment when it contaminates sources of water.  相似文献

Insect fauna attracted to cadavers at the crime scene can be identified and used to estimate the post-mortem interval (PMI). In the current study, insects associated with two human cadavers in a vehicular environment were collected and analysed. The first cadaver was found five days’ post mortem in a garage. The second cadaver was found in a car ten days after his death. The weather conditions were obtained from the nearest weather station located to the scenes of the death. During the study, six adults, 32 larvae and egg batches were collected from case 1 and identified as Chrysomya albiceps Wiedemann (Diptera: Calliphoridae). From the second case, two larvae of Megaselia scalaris Loew (Diptera: Foridae) and seven larvae of Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) were identified. mPMI ranged from five to twelve days. This information expands the knowledge on the insect fauna in the vehicular environment, which could be used to assist estimation of the PMI.  相似文献

In the UK and Ireland, research on the control of bovine tuberculosis in badgers includes the development of a palatable bait for oral delivery of a vaccine and a means of its deployment in the field. In the present study, we carried out field deployment of bait according to the established method of bait marking in early spring and early summer to compare the effects of seasonality on bait uptake rates. All baits contained rhodamine B (RhB) which was subsequently detected in the hair and whiskers of captured badgers. During the 8 days of bait feeding at 14 badger setts, 99% of baits deployed in spring, and 100% of those deployed in summer were removed. The presence of RhB in captured badgers indicated high rates of uptake amongst adult badgers in spring (93%) and summer (98%). Only cubs captured in summer showed evidence of having taken bait (91%). Between 67% and 100% of each social group was estimated to have taken bait. The detection of RhB in 96% of badgers captured at outlier setts, where bait was not fed, suggested that deployment at main setts alone may be sufficient to target a relatively high proportion of the badger population. The number of baits deployed per marked badger suggested that a similar level of uptake might be achievable using fewer baits. The results clearly demonstrate the potential value of the bait-marking methodology for delivering vaccine baits to badgers during spring and summer, but that deployment in early summer is necessary to target cubs.  相似文献

There has been little or no documentation of the insect community attracted to fermented tree sap, despite our familiarity with it. This study describes the influence of resource abundance (exudate quantity) on species richness, insect abundance, and diversity at the patch level in order to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for community structure. Resource abundance was positively correlated with species richness and insect abundance, negatively correlated with the equitability index (J), and not significantly correlated with diversity (Simpsons index of diversity; 1/D). Both correlation analyses and canonical correspondence analysis based on taxonomic categories indicated that responses to resource abundance were much greater in parasitoid wasps (Ichneumonoidea), drosophilid flies (Drosophilidae), and rove beetles (Staphylinidae). Field experiments showed that patches with more of the resource had greater species richness and greater hornet abundance. These results indicate that resource abundance is an important factor that affects community structure at the patch level, although it does not influence diversity directly, due to differences in the response to a resource across subgroups; drosophilid flies, the most abundant group that was heavily dependent on tree sap, make an especially large contribution to the change in J. Various factors influence the variation in the response to resource abundance, including population size, feeding habits, and resource utilization patterns (i.e. whether the species uses patches as habitat).  相似文献

Attract-and-kill bait stations and olive foliage sprayed with insecticidal bait spray and exposed to 0–4 weeks of weather were evaluated for efficacy by olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi), adult mortality. Mortality in greenhouse cage tests was significantly higher after three days than one day of exposure to non-weathered bait spray on bait stations and foliage, and on bait stations exposed to weather for three weeks. Mortality increased with an increase in insect exposure time, and decreased as bait spray weather exposure increased. Mortality was higher on bait stations than on olive foliage, and treated foliage showed little toxicity after 4 weeks in weather. In a commercial orchard, bait station efficacy was determined by captures of adults on yellow panel traps. Day temperatures were slightly higher on the underside of the station than top from 2 May to 10 July, similar on the top and underside 11 July to 7 August, and slightly lower on the underside from 8 August to 4 September. Fruit length increased from 0.4 on 16 May to 3 cm on 24 September and on 30 May attained 1 cm, the minimum size to produce one adult. No larvae or adults emerged from collected fruit. More adults were captured in an untreated row than a row with bait stations until 22 August and significantly so for the period ending on 11 July. Maximum adult captures occurred during 2 weeks prior to 19 September. Attract-and-kill bait stations would help reduce insecticidal applications and table olive production costs.  相似文献
