Reports of behavioral and clinical changes following weak microwave irradiation, though not fully documented, are of sufficient moment to require examination of each possible biological consequence of low level exposure, particularly with respect to the central nervous system. In this report the hypothesis that significant cytological microthermal effects are induced by low intensity microwave fields (10 mW/cm2 incident power density) is examined. An estimate of the upper bound on the thermal effects thus produced is made, showing the thermal variations to be no larger than those endogenous to neural tissue. A similar analysis of microthermal effects within the vestibulo-cochlear apparatus, however, suggests the more limited hypothesis that this structure is responsive to weak, absorbed microwave energy. An estimate of the temperature gradients, hence, local fluid density changes within the labyrinth supports the existence of detectable intralabyrinthine convective forces at incident power densities as low as 15–20 mW/cm2. This suggests (i) that microwave induced vestibular effects may provide a cue to alert personnel to significant acute microwave exposure, (ii) that reports of behavioral and/or clinical reactivity to low level microwave exposure may derive from such a benign but potentially useful interaction and (iii) that geometric peculiarities of the vestibulo-cochlear apparatus may result in markedly enhanced microwave-labyrinthine coupling at particular radiation wavelengths.  相似文献

Here, we present findings from a three-step investigation of the effect of galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) in normal subjects and in subjects undergoing vestibular rehabilitation (VR). In an initial study, we examined the body sway of 10 normal subjects after one minute of 2 mA GVS. The effect of the stimulation lasted for at least 20 minutes in all subjects and up to two hours in 70% of the subjects. We then compared a group of patients who received conventional VR (40 patients) with a group that received a combination of VR and GVS. Results suggest a significant improvement in the second group. Finally, we attempted to establish the optimal number of GVS sessions and to rule out a placebo effect. Fifteen patients received "systematic" GVS: five sessions, once a week. Five patients received "nonsystematic" galvanic stimulation in a sham protocol, which included two stimulations of the clavicle. These data were analyzed with Fisher's exact test and indicated that the best results were obtained after three sessions of GVS and no placebo effect was observed.  相似文献

The effect of the galvanic stimulation on the vestibular apparatus has been evaluated by registration on the postural deviations, using a stabilometry platform. We have studied the galvanic body-sway responses in a group of normal subjects, using a binauricolar bipolar stimulation, with the electrodes attached by means of surgical tape to the mastoid area. The records of body-sway responses have demonstrated in 80% of the considered cases a significant variation of all positional parameters after a current intensity of 2 mA, according the body sways toward the positive stimulus. At the same current intensity only five of the studied subjects have shown multidirectional swinging, in three cases joined with a subjective slight sway toward the ear stimulated with positive polarity. Therefore the galvanic test, joined with the posturography, proves to be a useful auxiliary method in vestibular investigation, allowing us to lower the threshold of galvanic stimulation and to make the electric stimulus better supported for the patient.  相似文献

Some problems of experimental determination or theoretical evaluation of antibody avidity are considered. It was shown that in order to determine the fraction of nonoccupied antibodies in their mixture with the excess of the corresponding antigen which is required to estimate avidity the methods should be used which are more sensitive than ELISA. The available methods did not allow determining the avidity of bivalent antibodies because of many reasons. However, in the recent years new methods were suggested that make it possible to evaluate the avidity of bivalent antibodies and that of the receptors which consist of two binding sites connected by a flexible linker of the known length. Thus, there are all possibilities now for determining the avidity of bivalent antibodies in experiments or by theoretical methods.  相似文献

This paper should be viewed as a part of our attempts to arrive at a quantitative understanding of some contradictory experimental phenomena in the vestibular perception. The most popular remains the Steinhausen's model of perception, in which the endolymph circulation, caused by the angular acceleration, is "measured" by the displacement of cupulae diaphragm. Though displacements of the cupulae top were experimentally observed, the thorough mathematical analysis shows that the applicated stop-stimuli were too much over the range of adequate stimulation conditions, so the cupulae was teared off from its normal position. The more natural mechanism of perception was proposed by McLaren & Hillman. It was experimentally demonstrated that the cupulae diaphragm remained margin attached during the normal stimulation conditions only with its bottom moved according to the value of the applicated angular acceleration. A question only arises, how will be the hair cells excited by low level stimulation, when elastic deformations of the cupulae are small and there is no visible shift of the cupulae bottom? The response is to find in the third mechanism formulated by Schmaltz, which connected the excitation of hair cells with the process of endolymph diffusion through the cupulae towards the subcupulae space.  相似文献

Coumarins are natural and synthetic active ingredients widely applied in diverse types of medicinal treatments, such as cancer, inflammation, infection, and enzyme inhibition (monoamine oxidase B). Dihydrocoumarin compounds are of great interest in organic chemistry due to their structural versatilities and, as part of our investigations concerning the structural characterization of small molecules, this work focuses on crystal structure and spectroscopic characterization of the synthesized and crystallized compound 4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3,4-dihydro-chromen-2-one (C16H14O3). Additionally, a theoretical calculation was performed using density functional theory to analyze the sites where nucleophilic or electrophilic attack took place and to examine the molecular electrostatic potential surface. Throughout all of these calculations, both density functional theory and Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics were performed by fully optimized geometry. The spectroscopic analysis indicated the presence of aromatic carbons and hydrogen atoms, and also the carbonyl and methoxy groups that were confirmed by the crystallographic structure. The C16H14O3 compound has a non-classical intermolecular interaction of type C–H???O that drives the molecular arrangement and the crystal packing. Moreover, the main absorbent groups were characterized throughout calculated harmonic vibrational frequencies. Also, natural bond orbital analysis successfully locates the molecular orbital with π-bonding symmetry and the molecular orbital with π* antibonding symmetry. Finally, the gap between highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals implies in a high kinetic stability and low chemical reactivity of title molecule.  相似文献

A theoretical and experimental analysis of bacterial growth in the bladder   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
A mathematical model of human micturition dynamics and bacterial growth predicts the population growth rate required for a bladder infection to become established in the absence of adhesin-mediated surface growth. Escherichia coli strains isolated from the urinary tract have significantly higher in vitro growth rates in urine than strains isolated from the intestinal flora. The results suggest that, for E. coli isolated from the urinary tract, adhesin-mediated surface growth may not be required for infections to become established and persist. The growth-rate differences observed between urinary tract and intestinal isolates suggests that the ability to survive and efficiently utilize the resources available in urine is an important adaptation for E. coli inhabiting the urinary tract.  相似文献

An analytical model describing incidence of mating in Ixodes ricinus (L.) is constructed and incorporated in a simple population model which predicts proportional growth rates of Ixodes populations as a function of host and parasite densities. The sensitivity of the population model to changes in parameter values is examined, and it is shown that there exists an optimum host population size for each of the Ixodes population sizes chosen. The significance of the results is discussed with respect to the spatial distribution of sheep tick populations.  相似文献

Experimental data report that vestibular afferents affect trigeminal system activity. The aim of this work was to evaluate whether static vestibular stimulation affects the excitability of trigeminal motoneurons in man. In order to assess this, voluntary EMG activity of masseter muscles as well as duration and latency of the early and late components of EMG exteroceptive silent period were evaluated while keeping the subject in vertical position and during 20 degrees static tilt. The experiments were performed on ten adult subjects with no orofacial, neurologic and otologic disorders. Each subject sat on a chair, which kept the complex head-jaw-neck-trunk and the limbs securely fixed, in order to minimize any interference due to the activation of somatosensory and proprioceptive afferents from these districts. The subjects were instructed to contract masseter muscles at 25% of their maximum bite force and the isometric force monitoring was used as visual feedback. Exteroceptive silent period (ESP) of masseter EMG was elicited by electrically stimulating the inferior inter-incisal gum. Results showed that static vestibular stimulation induced asymmetrical responses on voluntary masseter muscle activity, which was reduced to 70.3 +/- 16.1% (mean +/- S.D.) of the control value during ipsilateral tilt and increased to 128.8 +/- 13.0% during contralateral tilt. The duration of the early (ESP1) and late (ESP2) silent periods was also affected: during ipsilateral tilt ESP1 and ESP2 duration increased to 130.0 +/- 3.5% and to 122.1 +/- 2.1% of control, respectively; during contralateral tilt it was reduced to 76.8 +/- 1.2% and to 83.0 +/- 1.7% of control, respectively. On the contrary, changes in latencies were not significant. These data evidenced an asymmetrical effect exerted on trigeminal motor activity by static tilt. Since the influence of all receptors which could be activated by static tilt, except that arising from the macular ones, was minimized in this study, it is likely that the observed effects, induced by static tilt on masseter muscle activity, were of macular origin.  相似文献

The conformational properties of hyaluronic acid (HA) oligomers in aqueous solution were investigated by combining high-resolution NMR experimental results, theoretical simulation of NMR two-dimensional (2D) spectra by Complete Relaxation Matrix Analysis (CORMA), and molecular dynamics calculations. New experimental findings recorded for the tetra- and hexasaccharides enabled the stiffness of the HA and its viscoelastic properties to be interpreted. In particular, rotating frame nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy spectra provided new information about the arrangement of the glycosidic linkage. From (13)C NMR relaxation the rotational correlation time (tau(c)) were determined. The tau(c) were employed in the calculation of geometrical constraints, by using the MARDIGRAS algorithm. Restrained simulated annealing and 1 ns of unrestrained molecular dynamic simulations were performed on the hexasaccharide in a box of 1215 water molecules. The beta(1 --> 3) and beta(1 --> 4) glycosidic links were found to be rigid. The lack of rotational degree of freedom is due to direct and/or water-mediated interresidue hydrogen bonding. Both single or tandem water bridges were found between carboxylate group and N-acetil group. The carboxylate group of glucuronic acid is not involved in a direct link with the amide group of N-acetyl glucosamine and this facilitated bonding between the residue and the water molecules.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: There is a clear need for a prosthesis that improves postural stability in the balance impaired. Such a device would be used as a temporary aid during recovery from ablative inner-ear surgery, a postural monitor during rehabilitation (for example, hip surgery), and as a permanent prosthesis for those elderly prone to falls. METHOD OF APPROACH: Recently developed, small instruments have enabled wearable prostheses to augment or replace vestibular functions. The current prosthesis communicates by vibrators mounted on the subject's trunk. In this paper we emphasize the unique algorithms that enable tilt indication with modestly performing micromachined gyroscopes and accelerometers. RESULTS: For large angles and multiple axes, gyro drift and unwanted lateral accelerations are successfully rejected. In single-axis tests, the most dramatic results were obtained in standard operating tests where balance-impaired subjects were deprived of vision and proprioceptive inputs. Balance-impaired subjects who fell (into safety restraints) when not aided were able to stand with the prosthesis. Initial multiaxis tests with healthy subjects have shown that sway is reduced in both forward-back and sideward directions. CONCLUSIONS: Positive results in initial testing and a sound theoretical basis for the hardware warrant continued development and testing, which is being conducted at three sites.  相似文献
