Aggregata octopiana (Apicomplexa, Aggregatidae) is the most prevalent coccidian in the wild common octopus (Octopus vulgaris), whose heteroxenous life cycle includes gamogony and sporogony undergoing in the octopus digestive tract. In the infected reared octopi, we observed an unusual extraintestinal distribution of the coccidian, with both gamogony and sporogony ongoing in dermal and gill tissue. Oocysts and macrogamonts were embedded in the dermal connective tissue of octopian arms, demarcated by a thin cyst wall or multilayered dark membrane. In gill connective and epithelial tissue all developmental stages were observed, eliciting hemocytic infiltration. Sometimes a complete substitution of the tissue by cysts and developmental stages occurred, resulting in necrosis of gill tissue. 相似文献

Molecular phylogenetic analyses indicate that two clades of deep-sea octopuses evolved at opposite ends of the earth to become globally sympatric. Coexistence of these overtly similar, but phylogenetically distinct octopuses requires some means of niche partitioning. To investigate details of feeding, the buccal complexes of specimens of each clade, Muusoctopus and Graneledone, were sectioned at 90° to the radular ribbon. The buccal complex of Muusoctopus is the same as reported in Octopus; the radula and its bolsters extend the length of the buccal complex. In Graneledone, however, the radula and its bolsters are restricted to anterior half of the buccal complex. Posterior to the radular sac, a vertically oriented muscle, named here the buccal abductor, extends from the floor of the mouth to the base of the buccal complex. In Muusoctopus, the bolsters extend the radula to bring food into the mouth; the palps propel it to the esophagus. In Graneledone, although the bolsters extend the radula, contraction of the buccal abductor to expand the posterior mouth may be the primary food mover. The negative pressure differential created draws food into the mouth and to the entry to the esophagus. The buccal abductor may permit the ingestion of larger pieces of prey, as gut contents show. Its evolution may represent a key innovation that heightens deep-sea octopus diversity. 相似文献

The higher rank systematics of coleoid cephalopods are primarily based on the total number of arms. Completely preserved arm crows are, therefore, the most important character complex by which fossil representatives can be assigned to higher taxa. Whereas belemnoids—similar to modern Decabrachia—are well-known to have ten hooklet-bearing arms, recent studies have shown that Middle-Late Jurassic and Late Cretaceous gladius-bearing coleoids belong to the Vamyropoda, owing to having only eight hooklet-free arms. The arm number of Early Jurassic gladius-bearing coleoids was unclear for a long time. This paper, however, reports the first unequivocally complete arm crown from the Early Jurassic (Toarcian). It consists of eight strongly phosphatised arms of equal shape. Affinity with decabrachiate coleoids is therefore unlikely. The mantle sack of the specimen, which was identified as Loligosepia aalensis (Schübler in Zieten, 1832), has, furthermore, an unusual arrangement of numerous angular pieces. The irregular scattering of the mantle fragments was most probably caused by a scavenger. Finally, hooklets in the food residues in the posterior mantle indicate that Loligosepia preyed upon belemnites. 相似文献

Larval nematode parasites (Spiruroidea: Cystidicolidae) are recorded for the first time in Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797 in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. Prevalence was 16% and mean intensity was 1.46 worms/host. Body length of larval nematodes ranges from 8.3 to 9.3 mm, with a distance from the anterior end to nerve ring from 187.5 to 200 microm, and to excretory pore 194.6-350 microm. Anatomical characteristics, such as deirid, nerve ring, cephalic alae, excretory pore, pseudolabia amphids, sclerotized protuberance, and anus, examined using light microscopy (LM) or scanning electron microscopy (SEM), are illustrated. The nematode was designed as a cystidicolid "Type A" larva. The hemocytic infiltration present in the host tissue around the nematode capsule and the mechanical compression in the infected organs denote the pathogenicity of this nematode. In the study area, O. vulgaris may play the role of an intermediate or paratenic host in the nematode life cycle. 相似文献

Paralarval behaviour of eight species of the family Gonatidae (Teuthoidea, Cephalopoda) was examined in small 3–1 aquaria on board ship during planktonic surveys, which were carried out above and off the continental slope of the western part of the Bering Sea. Undisturbed paralarvae moved in aquaria with an average frequency of 15–20 mantle contractions per minute. In response to a sudden disturbance (flash of light, impact to the aquarium wall) squids exhibited a defensive body posture, relaxing the mantle and pulling the head with tentacles and arms into the mantle cavity, thereby becoming similar in appearance, size and colour to small jellyfishesAglantha digitalis (Hydromedusae). 相似文献

The family Ocythoidae is found throughout the temperate and subtropical waters of the world’s ocean and contains a single species, Ocythoe tuberculata. Recently, a single female specimen of the rare pelagic species O. tuberculata was collected off Uljin in the East Sea/Sea of Japan of Korea by squid jigging for the first time. The appearance of this species could be considered as evidence of the changes in species distribution of sea surface. However, further studies are required to investigate whether this phenomenon is temporary or continuous. 相似文献

Nematogens and vermiform embryos of a new species of Dicyema are described from an octopus collected off Veracruz, Mexico. Dicyema shorti n. sp. is a small dicyemid species that rarely exceeds 500 microm in length. It is further characterized by the presence of 18 peripheral cells in the vermiform stages, a conical-shape calotte, and an axial cell that extends to the base of the propolar cells. Other stages in the life cycle of the parasite are not known. This is the first dicyemid to be described from Octopus burryi Voss. 1950, and also from both the southern Gulf of Mexico and the country of Mexico. 相似文献

Newly hatched young of the benthic, coastal-living octopod, Octopus vulgaris , enter the plankton and remain there for perhaps eight weeks. At hatching the arms are short and bear a few, large, primary suckers. The buccal mass is relatively large in proportion to the size of the animal. The eyes are large. The central nervous system has fairly well-defined lobes, some of which develop earlier than others. We shall follow the development of several features of O. vulgaris from hatching, through its life in the plankton until settlement and correlate them with changes in the brain and behaviour. 相似文献

Beak development of early squid paralarvae (Cephalopoda: Teuthoidea) may reflect an adaptation to a specialized feeding mode 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Morphological and morphometric development of the upper jaw (UJ) and lower jaw (LJ) and arm crown of Chiroteuthis cf. veranyi, Liocranchia reinhardti (oceanic species), and Doryteuthis opalescens (neritic species) paralarvae were analyzed in order to verify whether or not they are determined by developmental modes. Jaw measurements were taken, correlated with mantle length (ML) by multiple linear regression to determine relative influences on growth, and compared between species by ANOVA to identify differences. Development was expected to be similar between oceanic species, but was morphologically similar between L. reinhardti and D. opalescens, and morphometrically similar between the latter and C. cf. veranyi. UJ and LJ measurements with highest correlation with ML are larger in L. reinhardti, indicating greater beak development in this species. Rostrum robustness is higher in L. reinhardti, intermediate in D. opalescens, and lower in C. cf. veranyi, hinting at the respective prey type. Teeth (LJ) and slit, characteristics of ancestral cephalopods, are present, disappearing completely and partially on the largest specimens of L. reinhardti and D. opalescens, respectively, and remaining in all sizes of C. cf. veranyi. The results suggest that their presence in early paralarvae reflects an adaptation to sucking the pre-digested internal fluids of prey. 相似文献

A fairly complete and relatively well-preserved gladius of the vampyropod coleoid cephalopod Teudopsis bollensis Voltz is recorded from the Lower Toarcian succession of the Kysuca Unit in the Pieniny Klippen Belt of Slovakia. These sediments are represented by dark-grey and black shales laid down in an oxygen-depleted environment during the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event and potentially represent the first Jurassic ??Konservat-Lagerst?tte?? in the Western Carpathians. The first reliable record of the Early Jurassic genus Teudopsis from this area notably extends its palaeogeographic distribution to the northwestern continental margin of the Tethys Ocean. The systematics, palaeogeography and stratigraphy are briefly discussed in a European context. 相似文献

Population dynamics and stock assessment for Octopus maya (Cephalopoda: Octopodidae) fishery in the Campeche Bank, Gulf of Mexico 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The octopus (Octopus maya) is one of the most important fish resources in the Mexican Gulf of Mexico with a mean annual yield of 9000 ton, and a reasonable number of jobs created; O. maya represents 80% of the total octopus catch, followed by Octopus vulgaris. There are two artisanal fleets based on Octopus maya and a middle-size fleet that covers both species. Catch-at-length structured data from the artisanal fleets, for the 1994 season (August 1st to December 15th) were used to analyze the O. maya population dynamics and stock and to estimate the current level of exploitation. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L infinity = 252 mm, mantle length; K = 1.4 year-1; oscillation parameters C = 1.0, WP = 0.6; and tz = 0.842 years. A rough estimate of natural mortality was M = 2.2, total mortality from catch curve Z = 8.77, and exploitation rate F/Z = 0.75. This last value suggests an intensive exploitation, even when yield per recruit analysis indicates both fleets may increase the minimum legal size on about 10% to increase yields. The length-based VPA also shows that the stock is being exploited under its maximum acceptable biological limit. These apparently contradictory results are explained by biological and behavioral characteristics of this species. Because most females die after reproduction, a new gross estimation of natural mortality was computed as M = 3.3. The new estimate of exploitation rate was F/Z = 0.57. This new value coincides with results from the length-VPA and the Thompson and Bell methods, the former suggesting that a reduction of 20% in fishing mortality may provide larger yields. This fishery resource is fully exploited and current management measures must be revised to sustain and probably optimize yields. 相似文献

Morphological and morphometric development of the beak of Argonauta nodosa (oceanic species) and Octopus vulgaris (neritic species) paralarvae were analyzed in order to verify whether or not they are determined by distinct life strategies and habitats. Measurements were taken from the upper jaw (UJ) and lower jaw (LJ), compared by the t test to identify-specific differences, and correlated with mantle length (ML) by multiple linear regression to determine overall and relative influences on growth. The jaws of both species were fragile, lightly colored, presented dentition and a slit (division) in the LJ rostrum, and showed considerable variation in general aspect. The hood and lateral walls (UJ) and crest and wings (LJ) showed the highest correlation with paralarval size (ML), and were more developed in A. nodosa than in O. vulgaris of similar size. The rostrum of O. vulgaris seems to be less functional than that of A. nodosa. The presence of beak characteristics from ancestral cephalopod species in the jaws of early paralarvae, namely teeth and a slit in the LJ rostrum, and also the inability of small-sized A. nodosa paralarvae to close the jaws and bite off a piece of prey, seem to be related to the performance of external pre-digestion and suction of body fluids of prey, a specialized feeding mode. 相似文献

The polymorphism of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase III was studied in the Mediterranean octopus, Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797. A total of 202 specimens from seven sampling sites were analysed with the aim of elucidating patterns of genetic structure in the central Mediterranean Sea and to give an insight into the phylogeny of the Octopus genus. Phylogenetic analyses showed that individuals from the central Mediterranean belong to the O. vulgaris species whose limits should nevertheless be clarified. Concerning genetic structure, two high-frequency haplotypes were present in all locations. The overall genetic divergence (ΦST = 0.05, P < 0.05) indicated a significant genetic structuring in the study area and an AMOVA highlighted a significant break between western and eastern Mediterranean basins (ΦCT = 0.094, P < 0.05). Possible explanations for the observed patterns of genetic structuring are discussed with reference to their relevance for fisheries management. 相似文献
