A simple coupled ecosystem-climate model is described that canpredict levels of atmospheric CH4, CO2, and H2during the Late Archean, given observed constraints on Earth'ssurface temperature. We find that methanogenic bacteria shouldhave converted most of the available atmospheric H2 intoCH4, and that CH4 may have been equal in importance to CO2 as a greenhouse gas. Photolysis of this CH4 may have produced a hydrocarbon smog layer that would have shielded the surface from solar UV radiation. Methanotrophic bacteria would have consumed some of the atmospheric CH4,but they would have been incapable of reducing CH4 to modern levels. The rise of O2 around 2.3 Ga would have drastically reduced the atmospheric CH4 concentrationand may thereby have triggered the Huronian glaciation.  相似文献

Hydrogen peroxide and the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The early atmosphere of the Earth is considered to have been reducing (H2 rich) or neutral (CO2-N2). The present atmosphere by contrast is highly oxidizing (20% O2). The source of this oxygen is generally agreed to have been oxygenic photosynthesis, whereby organisms use water as the electron donor in the production of organic matter, liberating oxygen into the atmosphere. A major question in the evolution of life is how oxygenic photosynthesis could have evolved under anoxic conditions — and also when this capability evolved. It seems unlikely that water would be employed as the electron donor in anoxic environments that were rich in reducing agents such as ferrous or sulfide ions which could play that role. The abiotic production of atmospheric oxidants could have provided a mechanism by which locally oxidizing conditions were sustained within spatially confined habitats thus removing the available reductants and forcing photosynthetic organisms to utilize water as the electron donor. We suggest that atmospheric H2O2 played the key role in inducing oxygenic photosynthesis because as peroxide increased in a local environment, organisms would not only be faced with a loss of reductant, but they would also be pressed to develop the biochemical apparatus (e.g., catalase) that would ultimately be needed to protect against the products of oxygenic photosynthesis. This scenario allows for the early evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis while global conditions were still anaerobic.  相似文献

The toxicity of H2O2 in Escherichia coli wild type and superoxide dismutase mutants was investigated under different experimental conditions. Cells were either grown aerobically, and then treated in M9 salts or K medium, or grown anoxically, and then treated in K medium. Results have demonstrated that the wild type and superoxide dismutase mutants display a markedly different sensitivity to both modes of lethality produced by H2O2 (i.e. mode one killing, which is produced by concentrations of H2O2 lower than 5 mM, and mode two killing which results from the insult generated by concentrations of H2O2 higher than 10 mM). Although the data obtained do not clarify the molecular basis of H2O2 toxicity and/or do not explain the specific function of superoxide ions in H2O2-induced bacterial inactivation, they certainly demonstrate that the latter species plays a key role in both modes of H2O2 lethality. A mechanism of H2O2 toxicity in E. coli is proposed, involving the action of a hypothetical enzyme which should work as an O2-• generating system. This enzyme should be active at low concentrations of H2O2 (<5 mM) and high concentrations of the oxidant (>5 mM) should inactivate the same enzyme. Superoxide ions would then be produced and result in mode one lethality. The resistance at intermediate H2O2 concentrations may be dependent on the inactivation of such enzyme with no superoxide ions being produced at levels of H2O2 in the range 5–10 mM. Mode two killing could be produced by the hydroxyl radical in concert with superoxide ions, chemically produced via the reaction of high concentrations of H2O2 (>10 mM) with hydroxyl radicals. The rate of hydroxyl radical production may be increased by the higher availability of Fe2+ since superoxide ions may also reduce trivalent iron to the divalent form.  相似文献

In the view of physiological role of H2O2, we investigated whether exogenous H2O2 application would affect short-term cold response of tomato and induce acclimation. Pretreatments were performed by immersing roots into 1 mM H2O2 solution for 1 h when transferring seedlings from seedling substrate to soil (acclimated group). Cold stress (3 °C for 16 h) caused significant reduction in relative water content (RWC) of control and non-acclimated (distilled water treated) groups when compared with unstressed plants. H2O2 promoted maintenance of relatively higher RWC under stress. Anthocyanin level in leaves of acclimated plants under cold stress was significantly higher than that of unstressed control and non-acclimated plants. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels demonstrated low temperature induced oxidative damage to control and non-acclimated plants. MDA remained around unstressed conditions in acclimated plants, which demonstrate that H2O2 acclimation protected tissues against cold induced lipid peroxidation. H2O2 acclimation caused proline accumulation in roots under cold stress. Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity in roots of cold stressed and unstressed H2O2 acclimated plants increased when compared with control and non-acclimated plants, with highest increase in roots of acclimated plants under cold stress. CAT levels in roots of acclimated plants also increased, whereas levels remained unchanged in unstressed plants. Endogenous H2O2 levels significantly increased in roots of control and non-acclimated plants under cold stress. On the other hand, H2O2 content in roots of acclimated plants was significantly lower than control and non-acclimated plants under cold stress. The results presented here demonstrated that H2O2 significantly enhanced oxidative stress response by elevating the antioxidant status of tomato.  相似文献

Chitosan is a biopolymer with multiple agricultural applications. The objective of this research was to identify the mechanism required for the chitosan response. Chitosan clearly induced resistance to osmotic stress (a surrogate for drought stress) in the ‘Leung Pratew 123’ (‘LPT123’) rice (Oryza sativa L. ‘Leung Pratew123’) by enhancing plant growth and maintenance of the photosynthetic pigments during osmotic stress, but not in the derived mutated line, LPT123-TC171. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was increased after osmotic stress in both lines, but higher levels were found in the LPT123 cultivar. Chitosan application did not affect the H2O2 or glutathione content under the osmotic stress condition in the LPT123 cultivar, but decreased H2O2 accumulation in the LPT123-TC171 line. The 20-fold lower glutathione level in the LPT123 cultivar suggested a low glutathione-ascorbate cycle activity that would lead to the higher H2O2 levels. Whereas, the chitosan-mediated reduction in glutathione levels in the LPT123-TC171 line during osmotic stress suggested a higher glutathione-ascorbate cycle activity leading to low H2O2 levels. Additionally, a higher peroxidase and catalase activity following chitosan treatment of the LPT123-TC171 line supports the lower observed H2O2 level. The lipid peroxidation after osmotic stress was decreased by chitosan treatment in LPT123, but not in LPT123-TC171. The exogenous H2O2 application with chitosan treatment in LPT123-TC171 could enhance plant growth during osmotic stress. It is concluded that the limited H2O2 level, the signal molecule for chitosan responses in the LPT123-TC171 line, resulted in no beneficial effects of chitosan application for osmotic stress. Therefore, H2O2 is proposed to be one of the key components for plant growth stimulation during osmotic (drought) stress by chitosan.  相似文献

To ascertain the effect of exogenously applied hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on drought stress, we examined whether the spraying of soybean leaves with H2O2 would alleviate the symptoms of drought stress. Pre-treatment by spraying leaves with H2O2 delayed foliar wilting caused by drought stress compared to leaves sprayed with distilled water (DW). Additionally, the relative water content of drought-stressed leaves pre-treated with H2O2 was higher than that of leaves pre-treated with DW. Therefore, we analyzed the effect of H2O2 spraying on photosynthetic parameters and on the biosynthesis of oligosaccharides related to water retention in leaves during drought stress. Under conditions of drought stress, the net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of leaves pre-treated with H2O2 were higher than those of leaves pre-treated with DW. In contrast to DW spraying, H2O2 spraying immediately caused an increase in the mRNA levels of d-myo-inositol 3-phosphate synthase 2 (GmMIPS2) and galactinol synthase (GolS), which encode key enzymes for the biosynthesis of oligosaccharides known to help plants tolerate drought stress. In addition, the levels of myo-inositol and galactinol were higher in H2O2-treated leaves than in DW-treated leaves. These results indicated that H2O2 spraying enabled the soybean plant to avoid drought stress through the maintenance of leaf water content, and that this water retention was caused by the promotion of oligosaccharide biosynthesis rather than by rapid stomatal closure.  相似文献

Isolated heterocysts of Anabaena 7120 evolve H2 in an ATP-dependent nitrogenase-catalyzed process that is inhibited by N2 and C2H2. Heterocysts have an active uptake hydrogenase that only requires an electron acceptor of positive redox potential, e.g., methylene blue, dichlorophenolindophenol or potassium ferricyanide. O2 supplied at low partial pressures is a very effective physiological oxidant for H2 uptake. High concentrations of O2 are inhibitory to H2 uptake. The oxyhydrogen reaction in heterocysts appears to be mediated by a cytochrome-cytochrome oxidase system, and it supports ATP synthesis via oxidative phosphorylation. Attempts to demonstrate acetylene reduction in isolated heterocysts employing H2 as an electron donor were unsuccessful. It is suggested that the uptake hydrogenase functions to conserve reductant that otherwise would be dissipated via nitrogenase-catalyzed H2 evolution.  相似文献

N-Methylcarbazole was incubated in H2O18 and under an 18O atmosphere. N-Hydroxymethylcarbazole, 1-OH- and 3-OH-N-methylcarbazole were isolated by HPLC and analyzed for 18O content In incubations containing 18O, all three metabolites showed >95% 18O incorporation. In incubations containing H2O18, the N-hydroxymethyl metabolite showed 16O incorporation equal to control incubations in 100% H2O. These data demonstrate that the sole source of oxygen in cytochrome P-450 catalyzed, NADPH supported N-hydroxymethylcarbazole formation is atmospheric oxygen.  相似文献

Mouse and human spermatozoa, but not rabbit spermatozoa, have long been known to be sensitive to loss of motility induced by exogenous H2O2. Recent work has shown that loss of sperm motility in these species correlates with the extent of spontaneous lipid peroxidation. In this study, the effect of H2O2 on this reaction in sperm of the three species was investi gated. The rate of spontaneous lipid peroxidation in mouse and human sperm is markedly enhanced in the presence of 1-5 mM H2O2, while the rate in rabbit sperm is unaffected by H2O2. The enhancement of lipid peroxidation, the rate of reaction of H2O2 with the cells, the activity of sperm glutathione peroxidase, and the endogenous glutathione content are highest in mouse sperm, intermediate in human sperm, and very low in rabbit sperm. Inac tivation of glutathione peroxidase occurs in the presence of H2O2 due to complete conver sion of endogenous glutathione to GSSG: No GSH is available as electron donor substrate to the peroxidase. Inactivation of glutathione peroxidase by the inhibitor mercaptosucci nate has the same effect on rate of lipid peroxidation and loss of motility in mouse and human sperm as does H2O2. This implies that H2O2 by itself at 1-5 mM is not intrinsically toxic to the cells. With merceptosuccinate, the endogenous glutathione is present as GSH in mouse and human sperm, indicating that the redox state of intracellular glutathione by itself plays little role in protecting the cell against spontaneous lipid peroxidation. Mouse and human sperm also have high rates of superoxide production. We conclude that the key intermediate in spontaneous lipid peroxidation is lipid hydroperoxide generated by a chain reaction initiated by and utilizing superoxide. Removal of this hydroperoxide by gluta thione peroxidase protects these sperm against peroxidation; inactivation of the peroxidase allows lipid hydroperoxide to increase and so increases the peroxidation rate. Rabbit sperm have low rates of superoxide reaction due to high activity of their superoxide dismutase; lack of endogenous glutathione and low peroxidase activity does not affect their rate or lipid peroxidation. As a result, these sperm are not affected by either H2O2 or mercapto-succinate. These results lead us to postulate a mechanism for spontaneous lipid peroxida tion in mammalian sperm which involves reaction of lipid hydroperoxide and O2 as the rate-determining step.  相似文献

There is increasing interest in the effect of energy metabolism on oxidative stress, but much ambiguity over the relationship between the rate of oxygen consumption and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Production of ROS (such as hydrogen peroxide, H2O2) in the mitochondria is primarily inferred indirectly from measurements in vitro, which may not reflect actual ROS production in living animals. Here, we measured in vivo H2O2 content using the recently developed MitoB probe that becomes concentrated in the mitochondria of living organisms, where it is converted by H2O2 into an alternative form termed MitoP; the ratio of MitoP/MitoB indicates the level of mitochondrial H2O2 in vivo. Using the brown trout Salmo trutta, we tested whether this measurement of in vivo H2O2 content over a 24 h-period was related to interindividual variation in standard metabolic rate (SMR). We showed that the H2O2 content varied up to 26-fold among fish of the same age and under identical environmental conditions and nutritional states. Interindividual variation in H2O2 content was unrelated to mitochondrial density but was significantly associated with SMR: fish with a higher mass-independent SMR had a lower level of H2O2. The mechanism underlying this observed relationship between SMR and in vivo H2O2 content requires further investigation, but may implicate mitochondrial uncoupling which can simultaneously increase SMR but reduce ROS production. To our knowledge, this is the first study in living organisms to show that individuals with higher oxygen consumption rates can actually have lower levels of H2O2.  相似文献

The peroxiredoxins (Prxs) constitute a very large and highly conserved family of thiol-based peroxidases that has been discovered only very recently. We consider here these enzymes through the angle of their discovery, and of some features of their molecular and physiological functions, focusing on complex phenotypes of the gene mutations of the 2-Cys Prxs subtype in yeast. As scavengers of the low levels of H2O2 and as H2O2 receptors and transducers, 2-Cys Prxs have been highly instrumental to understand the biological impact of H2O2, and in particular its signaling function. 2-Cys Prxs can also become potent chaperone holdases, and unveiling the in vivo relevance of this function, which is still not established, should further increase our knowledge of the biological impact and toxicity of H2O2. The diverse molecular functions of 2-Cys Prx explain the often-hard task of relating them to peroxiredoxin genes phenotypes, which underscores the pleiotropic physiological role of these enzymes and complex biologic impact of H2O2.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate seed germination, seedling growth, and antioxidative responses in two wheat cultivars, Ningchun and Xihan, exposed to different H2O2 concentrations. Ningchun exhibited higher germination rate but lower root and shoot growth than Xihan when exposed to H2O2 treatment. Assays using fluorescent dye H2DCFDA and propidium iodide showed a significantly enhanced H2O2 content and a cell elongation inhibition in H2O2-treated roots. The malondialdehyde content was elevated with increasing exogenous H2O2 concentration. Moreover, treatments of seedlings with H2O2 scavenger, catalase (CAT), and antioxidant, butylated hydroxytoluene, partly abolished H2O2-induced negative effect on root growth. In both untreated and H2O2-treated leaves, SOD activity in Ningchun was higher than that in Xihan, but POD and APX activities in Ningchun were lower than those in Xihan, leading to elevated H2O2 level in Ningchun leaves but decreased H2O2 content in Xihan ones under H2O2 treatment.  相似文献

Regulation of growth in stem sections of deep-water rice   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Ilya Raskin  Hans Kende 《Planta》1984,160(1):66-72
Submergence in water greatly stimulates internodal elongation in excised stem sections of deep-water rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Habiganj Aman II) and inhibits growth of leaf blades and leaf sheaths. The highest rates of internodal growth have been observed in continuous light. Very little growth occurs in submerged sections kept in darkness or incubated under N2 in the light. The effect of submergence on the growth of deep-water rice is, at least in part, mediated by C2H4, which accumulates in the air spaces of submerged sections. This accumulation results from increased C2H4 synthesis in the internodes of submerged sections and reduced diffusion of C2H4 from the tissue into the water. Increased C2H4 levels accelerate internodal elongation and inhibit the growth of leaves. Compounds capable of changing the rate of C2H4 synthesis, namely aminoethoxyvinylglycine, an inhibitor of C2H4 synthesis, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid, the immediate, precursor of C2H4, have opposite effects on growth of internodes and leaves. The enhancement of internodal elongation by C2H4 is particularly pronounced in an atmosphere of high CO2 and low O2. The increase in C2H4 synthesis in internodes of submerged sections is primarily triggered by reduced atmospheric concentrations of O2. The rate of C2H4 evolution by internodes isolated from stem sections and incubated in an atmosphere of low O2 is up to four times greater than that of isolated internodes incubated in air. In contrast, C2H4 evolution from the leaves is reduced under hypoxic conditions. The effect of submergence on growth of stem sections of deep-water rice can be mimicked by exposing non-submerged sections to a gas mixture which is similar to the gaseous atmosphere in the internodal lacunae of submerged sections, namely 3% O2, 6% CO2, 91% N2 (by vol.) and 1 l l-1 C2H4. Our results indicate that growth responses obtained with isolated rice stem sections are similar to those of intact deep-water rice plants.Abbreviations ACC 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid - AVG aminoethoxyvinylglycine  相似文献

Brassica oleracea L. was rather insensitive to atmospheric H2S: growth was only negatively affected at ≥0.4 μl I?1. Shoots formed a sink for H2S and the uptake rate showed saturation kinetics with respect to the atmospheric concentration. The H2S uptake rate was high in comparison with other species, which may reflect the high sulfur need of Brassica. The net uptake of sulfate by roots of hydroponically grown plants was substantially reduced after one week of exposure to 0.25 μl l?1 H2S, indicating that plants switched in part from sulfate to H2S as sulfur source for plant growth. Plants were sulfur deficient after two weeks of sulfur deprivation, illustrated by reduced growth, which was more pronounced for shoots than for roots, and in enhanced shoot dry matter content. The latter could for the greater part be attributed to enhanced levels of soluble sugars and starch. Sulfur deficiency was further characterized by a low pigment content, extremely low levels of sulfate and water-soluble non-protein thiols, and by enhanced levels of nitrate and free amino acids, particularly in the shoots. Furthermore, sulfur deficient plants contained a lower total lipid content in shoots, whereas its content in roots was unaffected. The level of sulfolipids was decreased in both roots and shoots. When sulfur deprived plants were exposed to 0.25 μl I?1 H2S for one week, all sulfur deficiency symptoms were abolished and growth was restored. Furthermore, plants were able to grow with 0.4 μl I?1 H2S as the sole sulfur source. Water-soluble non-protein thiol content was enhanced in both shoots and roots of H2S exposed plants, irrespective of the sulfate supply to the roots, whereas plants grown with H2S as sole sulfur source contained very low sulfate levels. The interaction between atmospheric and pedospheric sulfur nutrition in plants is discussed.  相似文献

The evolutionary history of oxygenesis is controversial. Form I of ribulose 1,5‐bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) in oxygen‐tolerant organisms both enables them to carry out oxygenic extraction of carbon from air and enables the competitive process of photorespiration. Carbon isotopic evidence is presented from ~2.9 Ga stromatolites from Steep Rock, Ontario, Canada, ~2.9 Ga stromatolites from Mushandike, Zimbabwe, and ~2.7 Ga stromatolites in the Belingwe belt, Zimbabwe. The data imply that in all three localities the reef‐building autotrophs included organisms using Form I Rubisco. This inference, though not conclusive, is supported by other geochemical evidence that these stromatolites formed in oxic conditions. Collectively, the implication is that oxygenic photosynthesizers first appeared ~2.9 Ga ago, and were abundant 2.7–2.65 Ga ago. Rubisco specificity (its preference for CO2 over O2) and compensation constraints (the limits on carbon fixation) may explain the paradox that despite the inferred evolution of oxygenesis 2.9 Ga ago, the Late Archaean air was anoxic. The atmospheric CO2:O2 ratio, and hence greenhouse warming, may reflect Form I Rubisco's specificity for CO2 over O2. The system may be bistable under the warming Sun, with liquid oceans occurring in either anoxic (H2O with abundant CH4 plus CO2) or oxic (H2O with more abundant CO2, but little CH4) greenhouse states. Transition between the two states would involve catastrophic remaking of the biosphere. Build‐up of a very high atmospheric inventory of CO2 in the 2.3 Ga glaciation may have allowed the atmosphere to move up the CO2 compensation line to reach stability in an oxygen‐rich system. Since then, Form I Rubisco specificity and consequent compensation limits may have maintained the long‐term atmospheric disproportion between O2 and CO2, which is now close to both CO2 and O2 compensation barriers.  相似文献

Low sink demand provided by pod removal and stem girdling of beans (Vicia faba, cv. Daqingshan) (-Sink) induced a significantly lower net photosynthetic rate (P n), stomatal conductance (g s), internal CO2 concentration (C i), and transpiration rate (E) compared with pod and root sink retention (CK). This depression in P n was due to stomatal limitation. Low sink demand of -Sink plants resulted in a higher leaf sucrose content, but a lower sucrose content in guard cells. Moreover, the significant accumulation of H2O2 and ABA were observed in both leaves and guard cells of -Sink plants. The most intensive electron dense deposit of cerium perhydroxides, produced by H2O2 reaction with cerium chloride, was present in the cell walls, especially the dorsal walls of guard cells. Immunogold electron-microscopy localization of ABA showed that ABA was distributed in ventral walls of guard cells and the intercellular space of mesophyll cells of -Sink leaves in contrast to CK plants. Application of exogenous sucrose to isolated bean leaves increased H2O2 and ABA contents. H2O2 and ABA in leaves was likely generated by two independently regulated pathways, each affected by the high sucrose concentration induced by low sink demand. Increased sucrose in leaves in response to low sink demand may have caused the increase of H2O2 and ABA, and their accumulation in mesophyll cells and guard cells was likely the primary cause for stomatal closure under low sink demand.  相似文献

Low temperatures during the booting stage reduce rice yields by causing cold-induced male sterility. To determine whether antioxidant capacity affects the ability of rice plants to withstand chilling at the booting stage, we produced transgenic rice plants that overexpress OsAPXa and have increased APX activity. The effect of increased APX activity on the levels of H2O2 and lipid peroxidation were determined by measuring H2O2 levels and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in spikelets during cold treatments at the booting stage. The levels of H2O2 and the MDA content increased by 1.5-fold and twofold, respectively in WT plants subjected to a 12°C treatment for 6 days. In contrast, transgenic lines showed small changes in H2O2 levels and MDA content under cold stress, and H2O2 levels and MDA content were significantly lower than in WT plants. APX activity showed negative correlations with levels of H2O2 and MDA content, which increased during cold treatment. Cold tolerance at the booting stage in transgenic lines and WT plants was evaluated. Spikelet fertility was significantly higher in transgenic lines than in WT plants after a 12°C treatment for 6 days. These results indicate that higher APX activity enhances H2O2-scavenging capacity and protects spikelets from lipid peroxidation, thereby increasing spikelet fertility under cold stress.  相似文献

Hyperbaric oxygen enhances apoptosis in hematopoietic cells   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) is 100% oxygen administered at elevated atmospheric pressure. In this study, we examined the effect of HBO on hematopoietic cell apoptosis. Cells exposed to HBO were incubated in a chamber containing 97.9% O2 and 2.1% CO2 at 2.4 atmospheres absolute (ATA). HBO enhanced spontaneous HL-60 cell apoptosis in a time-dependent manner; a 12 h exposure increased apoptosis by 42%. Exposing these cells to hyperoxia at standard atmospheric pressure (95% O2, 5% CO2 at 1 ATA) or increased pressure alone (8.75% O2, 2.1% CO2 at 2.4 ATA) had minimal effect on apoptosis. HBO also enhanced stimulus-induced apoptosis. HL-60 cells stimulated to die using radiation underwent 33% more apoptosis than cells exposed to radiation alone. HBO enhanced melphalan, camptothecin, and chlorambucil-induced apoptosis by 22%, 13%, and 8%, respectively. Jurkat cells stimulated to die with anti-Fas antibody underwent 44% more apoptosis when exposed to HBO. Spontaneous apoptosis was increased by 15% in HBO-exposed murine thymocytes. HBO's effect on apoptosis did not require new protein synthesis. As expected, HBO exposure increased the intracellular concentration of H2O2. Incubating HL-60 cells in the presence of dehydroascorbic acid partially abrogated HBO-induced increases in intracellular H2O2 and apoptosis. In summary, HBO enhances spontaneous and stimulus-induced apoptosis in hematopoietic cells, at least in part, by enhancing the intracellular accumulation of H2O2.  相似文献

It is widely accepted that photosynthetic bacteria played a crucial role in Fe(II) oxidation and the precipitation of iron formations (IF) during the Late Archean–Early Paleoproterozoic (2.7–2.4 Ga). It is less clear whether microbes similarly caused the deposition of the oldest IF at ca. 3.8 Ga, which would imply photosynthesis having already evolved by that time. Abiological alternatives, such as the direct oxidation of dissolved Fe(II) by ultraviolet radiation may have occurred, but its importance has been discounted in environments where the injection of high concentrations of dissolved iron directly into the photic zone led to chemical precipitation reactions that overwhelmed photooxidation rates. However, an outstanding possibility remains with respect to photochemical reactions occurring in the atmosphere that might generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a recognized strong oxidant for ferrous iron. Here, we modeled the amount of H2O2 that could be produced in an Eoarchean atmosphere using updated solar fluxes and plausible CO2, O2, and CH4 mixing ratios. Irrespective of the atmospheric simulations, the upper limit of H2O2 rainout was calculated to be <106 molecules cm?2 s?1. Using conservative Fe(III) sedimentation rates predicted for submarine hydrothermal settings in the Eoarchean, we demonstrate that the flux of H2O2 was insufficient by several orders of magnitude to account for IF deposition (requiring ~1011 H2O2 molecules cm?2 s?1). This finding further constrains the plausible Fe(II) oxidation mechanisms in Eoarchean seawater, leaving, in our opinion, anoxygenic phototrophic Fe(II)‐oxidizing micro‐organisms the most likely mechanism responsible for Earth's oldest IF.  相似文献
