Two varieties of Vigna vexillata Benth proved more highly resistant, both under field (free-choice) and screenhouse (no-choice) conditions, to infestation and damage by the pod-sucking bug Clavigralla tomentosicollis (Stål.) (Hemiptera: Coreidae) than cowpea (Vigna unguiculata Walp.) varieties. Trichomes on the pod of V. vexillata partly accounted for the resistance. However, other factors in the pod or seeds are involved in the resistance. Because the pod wall of V. vexillata is not tougher than that of cowpeas, biochemical characteristics of pods and seeds of V. vexillata will be further investigated.
Résumé Deux variétés de Vigna vexillata se sont avérées plus résistantes aux infestations et dégâts causés par la punaise des cosses Clavigralla tomentosicollis (Stål.) (Hemiptera: Coreidae) que les variétés de Vigna unguiculata, tant en champ (condition de libre choix) qu'en serre (sans choix possible). Les trichomes des cosses de V. vexillata sont en partie responsables de cette résistance. Cependant d'autres facteurs de la cosses ou des fèves sont impliqués dan la résistance. Comme la paroi de la cosse de V. vexillata n'offre pas plus de résistance mécanique que celle de V. unguiculata, les études futures se porteront sur les caractéristiques biochimiques des cosses et des fèves de V. vexillata.相似文献

In a series of laboratory and climate chamber tests we compared the growth and behaviour of Aphis craccivora on one susceptible (ICV-1) and two aphid-resistant (ICV-11 and ICV-12) cowpea lines. The aphids' growth rates were much lower on the resistant cowpea lines than on the susceptible one, indicating strong antibiosis. In addition, the aphids invariably settled in higher numbers on the susceptible line than on either of the resistant. Compared to ICV-1, damaged leaves of the resistant line ICV-12 were settled upon to a higher degree than undamaged leaves, and leaf discs from the same line were even less resistant.On resistant lines individual aphids waited a significantly longer time before making their first test probe. Total probing time as well as the time preceding a decision to stay or leave was also longer.These results are discussed in relation to the possible mechanisms involved, and we also consider the effects of previous leaf feeding on the expression of resistance in the field.
Résumé Au cours d'expériences au laboratoire et en chambres climatisées nous avons comparé la croissance et le comportement de A. craccivora sur une lignée sensible (ICV-1) et deux lignées résistantes (ICV-11 et ICV-12) de V. unguiculata. Les vitesses de croissance des pucerons ont été beaucoup plus lentes sur les lignées résistantes que sur la lignée sensible, ce qui révèle une forte antibiose. De plus, les pucerons atterrissent invariablement en plus grand nombre sur la variété sensible. Par comparaison avec ICV-1, les atterrissages sur lignée résistante ICV-12 étaient plus nombreux sur les feuilles endommagées que sur les feuilles intactes; les disques de feuilles de cette même lignée étaient encore moins résistants.Les pucerons ont séjourné individuellement un temps plus long sur les lignées résistantes avant de faire leur premier sondage. Le temps consacré aux sondages ainsi que le temps précédant de choix entre départ ou maintien sur la feuille étaient plus longs avec les lignées résistantes.Ces résultats ont été discutés en fonction des mécanismes impliqués. Nous avons aussi examiné les effets de la consommation antérieure sur les manifestations de la résistance dans la nature.相似文献

An in vitro regeneration system was developed in cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] Blackeye. Among several explants studied, shoot initiation response was observed from shoot apices of 3–5-day-old seedlings. The optimal medium for maximum shoot initiation comprised MS salts, B5 vitamins, 8.88 μM N
6-benzylaminopurine, 1 gl-1 casein hydrolysate, 342 μM L-glutamine, 3% sucrose, 0.3% phytagel, adjusted to pH 5.8. A shift in pH from 5.8 to 7.0 had no effect on shoot initiation and on number of shoots per explant. The highest shoot initiation frequency (77%) was obtained using this preferred medium, reaching a maximum of eight shoots per explant. For shoot elongation, 14 μM gibberellic acid was supplemented in the shoot initiation medium. Presence of indolebutyric acid in the rooting medium had no effect on root induction. Isolates of Fusarium were obtained and identified from seeds of cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp., by means of blotter tests and slide cultures. Species were differentiated according to the morphology of the macroconidia, microconidia and their arrangement in chains or false heads, the size and type of conidiophore, and the presence or absence of chlamydospores. The species were identified as F. semitectum, F. equiseti, F. oxysporum, F. solani, F. anthophilum, F. sporotrichioides, F. moniliforme, and Fusarium sp. Among the species, F. semitectum was the most frequently detected. None of these species were pathogenic when inoculated in susceptible cowpea cultivar (BR 17- Gurgueia). But, an isolate of F. oxysporum f. sp. tracheiphilum used as a standard of comparison for pathogenicity (control) induced symptoms of yellowing, vascular wilting, and death of a susceptible cowpea cultivar under the same environmental conditions. 相似文献

Thirty cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walpers, cultivars were evaluated as intact pods to determine if any possessed resistance to the cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabr.). Pod resistance was measured as pre-establishment larval mortality (PreM); those larvae dying after egg hatch but before penetrating into the seeds, and as post-establishment within-seed mortality (PostM); those larvae dying after penetrating into the seeds. Among the 30 varieties examined, PreM ranged from 57.9% to 99.4% and PostM ranged from 6.7% to 82.6%. Ten varieties exhibited total intact pod mortality (mortality from egg hatch to adult emergence from the seed) greater than 95%.Physical measurements were made of several pod and seed characteristics to ascertain whether the observed pod resistance was due to seed factors, pod-wall factors, or to interactions between the pod and seeds. Although resistance to breakage (from handling plus pod dehiscence) is a necessary characteristic for overall pod protection against C. maculatus; other factors are also important. Among the other pod and seed characteristics measured to identify major resistance factors, seed coat thickness was the one most highly correlated with pod resistance. Our results suggest that interactions between pod-wall and seed coat characteristics play a large role in pod resistance of cowpeas to C. maculatus. 相似文献

Protomycopsis phaseoli (Ramak and Subram) is the causal agent of the cowpea leaf smut disease in Nigeria and not Entyloma vignae as claimed by some authors. This pathogen formed dark ash-grey to sooty-black lesions of 3–10 mm in diameter, while young
lesions had yellow haloes. P. phaseoli produced dark reddish-brown chlamydospores that are globose to oval measured 23.8 μm, thick-walled and rugose. The chlamydospores
germinated and produced globose vesicles. The pathogen grew on potato dextrose agar only when the leaf tissue was dipped in
acidified water (1% H2SO4). The organism was slowly growing at 24–28 °C with snow white colour. Chlamydospores of P. phaseoli in infected cowpea leaves survived longer when buried in the soil for five months than when they were left on the soil surface
for the same period at temperatures (26–27 °C) and humidity (70–82%) prevailing in Ibadan. Destruction of leaf debris before
crop emergence, long period of rotation and no tillage cropping are suggested to prevent the onset and spread of leaf smut
disease of cowpea.

A greenhouse study was carried out using cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) grown in Perlite® and inoculated with Nitragin® to investigate the concentration of plant nutrients and planting density required for optimum biomass production. Five concentrations (full, 0.5, 0.2, 0.1 and 0.05 strength) of Bisseling's nutrient solution and five planting densities (one to five plants per pot) were tested in a factorial randomized Graeco-Latin square design. Growth was determined as fresh and dry weights of leaves, stems, petioles, roots, flowers and pods, and whole plant.Optimum biomass production was found at 0.5 strength nutrient solution and a density of one plant per pot. Plants were more sensitive to higher planting density than to alterations of nutrient level. Over a twenty-fold range of nutrient supply, whole plant biomass yield varied at most by 44%, whereas increasing planting density from one to five plants per pot decreased biomass production by as much as 77%. There is a decrease in the shoot/root ratio as nutrient level decreases. The data suggests a potential for higher seed production at the higher densities and lowest nutrient levels, but this data was inconclusive. 相似文献

The effect of non-host maize plants on colonisation of cowpea byMegalurothrips sjostedti (Trybom) (Thysanoptera; Thripidae) was investigated.
There were no differences in population density and activity ofM. sjostedti on sole cowpea crop and mixed cowpea/maize crop during the colonisation phase (i.e. 10–30 days after emergence of the plants.
However, subsequentlyM. sjostedti numbers were lower in the mixed than in the sole crop, suggesting that maize did not interfere with colonisation of cowpea
crop by thrips. In a choice situation, higher numbers ofM. sjostedti oriented towards, and settled on, sole cowpea plants than on those mixed with maize. Olfactory tests indicated that fewer
thrips oriented towards a cowpea/maize mixed odour source. When equal numbers of thrips were introduced into the centre of
sole- and mixed-cropped cowpea plots, the thrips became randomly distributed in each plot. Fewer thrips were recovered from
the mixture than from the sole crop.
It is concluded that, although non-host plant odours do not reduce thrips colonisation they interfere with host plant utilisation. 相似文献

In 1992, Vaillancourt and Weeden discovered a very important mutation for studying cowpea evolution and domestication. A loss
of a BamHI restriction site in chloroplast DNA characterized all domesticated accessions and a few wild (Vigna unguiculata ssp. unguiculata var. spontanea) accessions. In order to screen a larger number of accessions, primers were designed to check this mutation using PCR RFLP
or direct PCR methods. Using these new primers, 54 domesticated cowpea accessions and 130 accessions from the wild progenitor
were screened. The absence of haplotype 0 was confirmed within domesticated accessions, including primitive landraces from
cultivar-groups Biflora and Textilis, suggesting that this mutation occurred prior to domestication. However, 40 var. spontanea accessions distributed from Senegal to Tanzania and South Africa showed haplotype 1. Whereas this marker could not be used
to identify a precise center of origin, it did highlight the widely distributed cowpea crop-weed complex. Its very high frequency
in West Africa could be interpreted as a result of either genetic swamping of the wild/weedy gene pool by the domesticated
cowpea gene pool or as the result of domestication by ethnic groups focusing primarily on cowpea as fodder. 相似文献

The effect of water deficit on nodulation, N2 fixation, photosynthesis, and total soluble sugars and leghemoglobin in nodules was investigated in cowpea and groundnut. Nitrogenase activity completely ceased in cowpea with a decrease in leaf water potential (
leaf) from –0.4 MPa to –0.9 MPa, while in groundnut it continued down to –1.7 MPa. With increasing water stress, the acetylene reduction activity (ARA) declined very sharply in cowpea, but ARA gradually decreased in groundnut. Even with mild water stress (
leaf of 0.2 MPa), nodule fresh weight declined 50% in cowpea partly due to a severe nodule shedding whereas nodule fresh weight declined in groundnut only when
leaf decreased by 1.0 MPa. No nodule shedding was noticed even at a higher stress level in groundnut. Photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were also more stable in groundnut than in cowpea under water stress. There was a sharp increase in total soluble sugars and leghemoglobin in the nodules of groundut with water stress, but no definite trend could be found in cowpea. 相似文献

Ten cDNAs for drought-inducible genes were isolated using differential screening of a cDNA library prepared from 10-hr dehydrated
cowpea plants,Vigna unguiculata (S. Iuchi, K. Yamaguchi-Shinozaki, T. Urao, T. Terao, K. Shinozaki; Plant Cell Physiology, 1996 in press). Two of the cDNA
clones, designated CPRD12 and CPRD46, were sequenced and characterized. The CPRD12 and CPRD46 cDNAs encode putative proteins
related to nonmetallo-short-chain alcohol dehydrogenase (CPRD12) and chloroplastic lipoxygenase (CPRD46). Northern blot analysis
revealed that these genes are induced by high-salinity stress and exogenous abscisic acid, but not by cold stress. The CPRD46
gene is also responsive to heat stress and methyl jasmonate and salicylic acid. Genomic Southern blot analysis suggested that
CPRD12 constitutes a small gene family, but that CPRD46 is a single copy gene. We discuss the possible functions of these

Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) associations often vary according to the abundance of available soil phosphorus (P). Therefore, understanding the response of crop plants to colonization by VAM fungi necessitates the study of the response of colonized and noncolonized plants, from a range of cultivars, to differing levels of P. Cowpea is grown throughout the world, often on impoverished soils in which it can benefit from formation of mycorrhizae. The present study was conducted to determine the response of four cultivars of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), varying in nitrogen fixation capacity, to inoculation withGlomus fasciculatum at four levels of added P in the rooting medium. In a greenhouse experiment, four cowpea cultivars, Mississippi Silver, Brown Crowder, Six Week Browneye and MI 35, were grown with and without the mycorrhizal fungus at four levels of added P, 0, 10, 20 and 30 ppm. Root colonization (%) was negatively correlated with P content of the growth medium and shoot P concentration. Intraspecific variability was shown for shoot dry weight and leaf area in response to inoculation withG. fasciculatum at different P levels. The range of P required in the growth medium which allowed benefit fromG. fasciculatum was identified for individual cultivars using shoot dry weight and leaf area, and collectively across cultivars for other parameters. 相似文献

Differences in growth, nodulation and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) root infection among recent cowpea breeding lines
from IITA were examined at low and high P levels in pot (94 lines) and field experiments (43 lines) at Fashola in the derived
savanna zone of Nigeria. Based on their growth performance, these lines were subdivided into 5 groups: (i) poor performance
under low and high P conditions; (ii) good performance under low P and poor performance under high P; (iii) intermediate performance
under high and low P; (iv) good performance under high and low P conditions; and (v) good performance under high P and poor
performance under low P. About 42% of the breeding lines (18 out of 43 lines tested) had the same grouping for the field and
pot experiments. Eight cowpea lines (4 P-responders and 4 non-P-responders) were selected from the first experiment for subsequent
studies on the effect of P supply (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg P ha-1) on P uptake, P use efficiency, dry matter production, N-fixation, AMF infection and N balance. Dry matter production, shoot/root
ratio, total shoot N, and total N-fixed of the non-P-responder line, IT81D-715, were strongly related to P uptake efficiency.
The P-responder IT81D-849 had a significant (95%) correlation between AMF and P-use efficiency. The cowpea lines fixed on
average 22 kg N ha-1, which was 70% of the plant total N. The N balance based on the difference between the amount of N2 fixed and N exported through the harvest, ranged between −10.6 kg N ha-1 and +7.7 kg N ha-1. Based on its adaptability to grow in low P soils and overall positive N balance, the cowpea line IT81D-715 should be recommended
for cultivation when P is the limiting factor.

Chemical fertilizers have been used in the cultivation of plants due to their high solubility and effect on crops yield. Biofertilizers
with phosphate rock (PR) and potash rock (KR) plus sulfur inoculated with Acidithiobacillus may improve plant growth and contribute to addition of available P and K in soil. The effectiveness of biofertilizers from
phosphate and potash rocks mixed with sulfur and Acidithiobacillus was studied in a Typic Fragiuldult soil of the Brazilian Northeast Tableland. Cowpea (cv. “IPA 206”) was grown with and without
rhizobia inoculation. Treatments were: (a) phosphate rock (1000 kg ha−1); (b) Biofertilizers-BP (250 and 500 kg ha−1); (c) triple superphosphate-TSP (250 kg ha−1); (d) potash rock (1000 kg ha−1); (e) biofertilizer-BK (250; 500 and 750 kg ha−1); (f) potassium chloride-KCl (250 kg K20 ha−1); (g) control without P or K fertilization (P0K0). The soil was maintained under water submersion covered with black plastic (solarization process) for a period of 30 days.
Biofertilizers (Bp and BK) and soluble fertilizers increased plant growth and NPK uptake. Biofertilizers reduced soil pH, especially when applied in
highest rates. Biofertilizers and TSP+KCl showed the best values of available P and K in soil. Rhizobial inoculation was effective
on cowpea, but no nodules were formed by bacteria native from the soil, probably due to the effect of the solarization process.
From obtained PK biofertilizers could be used as alternative for cowpea fertilization in Tableland soils. 相似文献

The effects of silicon (Si) supply on manganese (Mn) toxicity symptoms and Mn and Si concentrations in the leaf apoplast in a Mn-sensitive cowpea cultivar (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. cv. TVu 91) were investigated in solution culture experiments. When 1.44 mM Si was supplied concurrently with 50 M Mn, the Mn toxicity symptoms were clearly avoided without decreasing the total Mn concentration. On the other hand, the symptoms were not completely alleviated when the plants were pretreated with 1.44 mM Si and then exposed to 50 M Mn without concurrent Si supply. Plants of both of these treatments exhibited lower Mn concentrations in the apoplastic washing fluids but higher amounts of adsorbed Mn on the cell walls than the plants treated with 50 M Mn without Si supply. However, the difference in Mn concentration between plants with continuous and interrupted Si supply was not significant. Moreover, the Mn concentration in the apoplastic washing fluids of the plants with continuous supply of 1.44 mM Si and 50 M Mn and not showing Mn toxicity symptoms was higher than that of the plants grown at 10 M Mn without Si supply which showed distinct Mn toxicity symptoms. These results show that Si supply alleviates Mn toxicity not only by decreasing the concentration of soluble apoplastic Mn through the enhanced adsorption of Mn on the cell walls. A role of the soluble Si in the apoplast in the detoxicification of apoplastic Mn is indicated. 相似文献

Summary The NPK concentrations in cowpea leaves (cv California Blackeye No. 5) with stage of plant development did not vary significantly with tillage treatment but several features of the concentration of these different ions with age, stage of plant development, incidence of flooding and soil water content are significant.In the major rainy season when soil water content was adequate and seldom above field capacity, there was an almost linear increase in the concentration of N and P in the leaves up to 56 days after planting which coincided with fruit development. This suggested that the accumulation of N and P do take place after flowering which occurred 39 days after planting. The pattern of accumulation of N and P in the minor rainy season suggested that flooding and the occurrence of prolonged soil moisture contents above field capacity suppressed the accumulation of these two nutrients. Potassium accumulation was high in the early stages of cowpea growth and declined with age of the crop. Flooding and high soil moisture contents seem to have had little or no effect on potassium accumulation in the leaves. The pattern of accumulation of N and P suggests that the supply of these nutrients to the cowpea plant must remain high up to fruit development and that additional N and P would need to be added to the soil after a flooding event or when the soil moisture content is above field capacity for prolonged periods. 相似文献

The role of fulvic, malic, and oxalic acids in alleviating the toxic effects of aluminium (Al) on tap-root elongation of soybean cv. Fitzroy, cowpea cv. Vita 4, and green gram cv. Berken was studied. Treatments consisted of a factorial combination of four Al concentrations (0, 12.5, 25 and 50 µM as Al(NO3)3·9H2O) and two concentrations either of malic or oxalic acid (0, 50 µM) or fulvic acid (0, 65 mg L-1 of organic carbon). The free monomeric Al in solution was determined using a pyrocatechol violet procedure which distinguishes between monomeric and organically complexed Al. Fulvic acid completely alleviated the toxic effect of Al at all concentrations on soybean and cowpea and at concentrations <25 µM on green gram. The non-toxic Al-fulvate complex remained in solution. Both malic and oxalic acid, at the concentrations tested, failed to alleviate Al toxicity on any species; a much higher proportion of the added Al remained in monomeric form in the presence of these acids. 相似文献

toMaruca testulalis Geyer (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) based on 7 developmental parameters of the pest on floral buds, flowers and sliced pods. On
the whole, three developmental parameters: percentage pupation (V2), percentage emergence (V5) and growth index (V7) were
the most important for the grouping of the cultivars with respect toM. testulalis damage. However, out of the three parameters, growth index (V7) had the highest factor score. Using the cluster analysis
technique, the cultivars were sorted into five distinct groups for each part. The importance of these findings in the determination

Daphnia magna was cultured with two different techniques at sublethal nickel concentrations from 0 up to 200 µg Ni l-1. The results of the experiments run with cohorts of single individuals in static cultures were compared with the results obtained with populations held in flow through cultures. The most sensitive demographic parameters in cohorts were life span, the total number of progeny and the achievable maximum body length. The investigated nickel concentrations lowered the mean animal density in populations. Size class distribution was affected and the oscillation of the percentage of ovigorous adults increased with increasing nickel concentrations. In 200 µg Ni l-1 one population extincted. Individuals in static cultures exposed to the same nickel concentration produced at least two neonates. Both employed techniques are discussed. 相似文献
