The total biomass of jellyfish on the shelf of the eastern Sea of Okhotsk in the summer is estimated as 1672700 tons according to the results of hydroacoustic measurements and 901000 tons by the method of squares. The use of hydroacoustic technologies makes evaluation of the actual stock and range of medusae more accurate, and the further enhancement and perfection of the hydroacoustic method based on multifrequency measurements enables one to obtain more reliable estimates. A significant increase (nearly 25 times) of the total jellyfish biomass takes place in the summer period. Cyanea prevailed in biomass in the spring and Chrysaora melanaster prevailed in the summer. Some species showed considerable expressed spatial differentiation of distribution and affinity to certain environmental conditions. The studied species were almost exclusively zoophages. Their algal diet consisted mainly of diatom algae. Scyphomedusa’s diet mainly included the so-called “peaceful” zooplankton, viz., euphausiids and copepods (as a rule, over 50% the mass), at the same time carnivorous zooplankton, saggits, amphipods, and small medusae also formed a substantial share of their diet. One individual of the predominant jellyfish species consumes a total of 6.1 to 70.5 kcal during its lifecycle, which corresponds to 79.1–513.0 g of raw organic material, assuming 70% assimilability. The relatively low demand for food of this sort can be explained by the low caloric value of the jellyfish body, 96–97% of which consists of water. The distribution and composition of the jellyfish prey show that scyphomedusae exert the greatest influence on the nekton community, as they concentrate in the shelf area of the eastern part of the sea, at walleye pollock spawning sites. There the larvae of bottom invertebrates, including commercially valuable organisms, such as crab and shrimp, are also consumed. In the summer, jellyfish eat nearly 100 billion eggs and 20 billion larvae of walleye pollock, as well as 130 billion decapod (mostly crab) larvae each day, which corresponds to 0.03% of the eggs and 0.003% of the larvae of walleye pollock and 0.003% of the decapod larvae in the estimated stock.  相似文献

Materials from six complex trawl surveys conducted by the TINRO-Center in the upper epipelagic zone of the Western Bering Sea during the summer-fall seasons from 2002 through 2006 were used as the basis of this paper. The overall biomass (and abundance) of jellyfish increased from 0.6–0.8 million t (1.1–1.8 billion individuals) in the summer up to 0.9–1.7 million t (4.4–4.8 billion individuals) in fall. Scyphomedusa Chrysaora melanaster and the Hydromedusa Aequorea forskalea made up the major part of the jellyfish biomass (67–97%). Their distribution varied significantly. A. forskalea aggregated mainly in the deepwater part of the Bering Sea. Ch. melanaster was widely dispersed across the entire area of the investigations and formed the most considerable aggregations in the Anadyr-Navarin area. In the fall of 2006 the diet of jellyfish generally consisted of plankton organisms (copepods, euphausiids, amphipods, pteropods, chaetognaths, ostracods, and larval decapods). However, Ch. melanaster had a greater portion of fish and larval squid in its diet.  相似文献

The extremely paedomorphic fish Schindleria (Gobioidei, Schindleriidae) is widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific Ocean, inhabiting coral reef lagoons. At least 21 cryptic species (Schindleria spp. 1–21) have been discovered around the Ryukyu and Ogasawara Islands. As a first step in extending the survey areas to the entire Indo-Pacific Ocean, the present study collected and examined Schindleria in Palau, located approximately 2,200 km from the Ryukyu Islands, for any cryptic diversity. Molecular phylogenetic analysis using partial mitochondrial 16S rRNA sequences of 71 specimens revealed four new cryptic species of Schindleria spp. 22–25 (Palau 1–4) in Palau.  相似文献

The aquarium trade is an important and rapidly growing vector for introduced species in the United States. We examined this vector by surveying pet stores in the San Francisco Bay–Delta region to compile a list of aquarium fish species commonly stocked. We identified which of these species might be able to survive in the Bay–Delta, and investigated store representatives’ knowledge and attitudes about biological invasions. A restrictive analysis using conservative estimates of fish temperature tolerances and environmental conditions found that the local aquarium trade includes 5 fish species that can survive in a temperate system such as the Bay–Delta. Under more inclusive parameters, up to 27 fish species met the criteria for survival in the Bay–Delta. We further explored these results by comparing potential invader incidence between different types of stores. In the more restrictive analysis, three national retail chains stocked significantly more potentially invasive species than independent aquarium stores, but there was no difference in the more inclusive analysis. A significantly higher percentage of fish taxa were easily identifiable and well-labeled in chain stores than in independent stores. Most aquarium store representatives indicated willingness to take action to reduce the threat of trade-related introductions, although chain store employees were more willing to assign responsibility for reducing this threat to the aquarium industry than were independent store employees. Management efforts for this vector should focus on (a) improving labeling and identification of fish species in stores, (b) expanding the often spotty data on fish physiological tolerances, especially for saltwater species, (c) educating customers and store employees about the risks posed by pet release, and (d) providing better options for responsible disposal of unwanted fish. The distribution and abundance of jellyfish of the family Ulmaridae was studied based on the data of trawl surveys conducted in the Sea of Okhotsk (1998–2006) and the Sea of Japan (2003) in the fall. The jellyfish Aurelia aurita mainly inhabits the waters of the Sea of Japan, while in the Sea of Okhotsk small quantities of this species were recorded in southern areas, and solitary individuals, off North Sakhalin. Aurelia limbata tends to shelf waters of the Sea of Okhotsk, being less abundant in the southern deepwater area and in the Sea of Japan. Phacellophora camtschatica, in contrast, aggregates mostly over deep basins, whereas in shallow areas a significant quantity of this species was found only off West Kamchatka. In the northern Sea of Okhotsk, the species A. limbata dominated in biomass and abundance among Ulmaridae. During the studied period, its biomass varied from 27 to 803 kg/km2 and its abundance varied from 69 to 1706 ind/km2. In the southern Sea of Okhotsk, as a rule, P. camtschatica prevailed (1–16 kg/km2 and 6–46 ind/km2). In the Sea of Japan, the most abundant species was A. aurita (29 kg/km2 and 104 ind/km2). The jellyfish size structure in catches is presented.  相似文献

The relationship between invasive alien species and main climatic zones   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Analysis of numbers of invasive species (insects, plants, plant diseases) in each of Chinese provinces and the world’s climatic zones respectively, demonstrated positive correlations between diversity of bioinvasion and air temperature and precipitation (the two main criteria for classifying world climate types). When the air temperature is within the range of 1–25°C, the degree of diversity of invasive alien species increases exponentially with air temperature. However, when the air temperature falls outside the range of 1–25°C, the diversity of harmful invasive alien species changes with air temperature in a parabolic pattern, showing a “mid-latitude bulge”. Namely, when air temperatures are too high or too low, a lower average invasion frequency of harmful alien species is observed. Invasion by harmful invasive alien species is more weakly related to precipitation. Different climatic zones showed dramatic differences in resistance to the invasion of invasive alien species due to their different characteristic climatic factors, mainly including air temperature and precipitation.  相似文献

Since the late 1990s, the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) has spread into the East Frisian Wadden Sea (Germany). This invasion provided an opportunity to study the population dynamics and the patterns of spread during the initial bioinvasion process. With its source area in The Netherlands, the bioinvasion continues in an eastward direction, as documented by a gradient of high abundances in the west and low abundances in the east during the first study year. One year later, abundances of the Pacific oyster were more heterogenic and differed between adjacent tidal basins. The increase in population sizes at all study sites was very high, reaching levels similar to native occurrence populations. The growth constant (K) varied between 0.300 and 0.990 year−1. The mussel bed with the highest densities had a mean abundance of >300 ind. m−2, and a maximum of 1,460 ind. m−2. Furthermore, the bioinvasion was facilitated by a low mortality (Z) found for populations between 0.5 and 1.5 years old (Z = 0.03–0.13 year−1). At present, Pacific oysters are well established at several locations in the East Frisian Wadden Sea and may become with these reproductive potential self-sustaining populations.  相似文献

The inbreeding avoidance hypothesis predicts that organisms that often encounter relatives as potential mates should evolve behaviours to avoid incestuous matings. Avoidance behaviours have practical importance for small populations because deleterious genetic processes may be less imminent than otherwise expected from genetic models that assume random mating. I used genetic techniques to investigate the extent of inbreeding and inbreeding avoidance behaviours in rare lizards from southern New Zealand. Grand skinks, Oligosoma grande, live in small patchily distributed groups, and have low rates of inter-group dispersal (ca. 3–20% disperse). I used data from 15 microsatellite loci to test the hypothesis that adults are likely to encounter kin as potential mates and will inbreed. These data showed that adult skinks usually inhabited rock outcrops with adult relatives of the opposite sex – up to 35% of potential mates were of equivalent relatedness as half-sibs and 17% were equivalent to full sibs. However, skinks did not preferentially breed with less related mates, and 18.2% of matings were between individuals of equivalent relatedness as full-sibs. Instead, skinks mated with partners of all levels of relatedness, and were promiscuous – almost half of adult females and nearly three quarters of adult males reproduced with multiple partners. In addition, inbreeding had no effect on survival of offspring in their first year. Two other putative mechanisms of inbreeding avoidance, sex-biased and natal dispersal, were not pronounced in this species. This study adds to a growing list of species that inbreed despite the risks.  相似文献

Eleven dinucleotide and five tetranucleotide polymorphic microsatellite loci were presented for the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin Sousa chinensis, a species categorized as ‘data deficiency’ in the IUCN Red List. These markers were developed to allow future population studies, such as characterization of population structure and genetic diversity that are important for the species’ conservation. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 9 with observed heterozygosity ranging from 0.167 to 0.917, and expected heterozygosity ranging from 0.159 to 0.913. Test of these loci in five additional cetacean species found that 10–13 loci have successful cross-amplifications.  相似文献

Commensal behavior of jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus (Temminck & Schlegel) with jellyfishes has been widely observed but its ecological function is still unclear. The goal of the present research is to examine the function of association behavior with jellyfish in the laboratory and in field observations with an emphasis on ontogenetic changes. In the laboratory, jack mackerel juveniles (mean standard length (SL) = 11, 19, 38, and 55 mm) were placed in 500-l polycarbonate tanks with two live moon jellyfish, Aurelia aurita (Linné), and one artificial jellyfish made of silicon. Association behavior with either live or artificial jellyfish was visually observed under the following conditions: control, presence of a predator model, before and after feeding live Artemia, 1 h and 3 h after feeding, and at night. Jack mackerel at 11 mm SL associated with both the moon jellyfish and artificial jellyfish, unrelated to the presence of a predator model or feeding. Juveniles at 19 mm associated with moon jellyfish only in the presence of a predator model. Larger juveniles associated with moon jellyfish at 1 h and 3 h after feeding. Thus the ecological function of association was proposed to develop first from school formation, next as a hiding place from predators, and then as a food source. Underwater observations of jack mackerel associating with giant jellyfish Nemopilema nomurai (Kishinouye) in two different areas in the Sea of Japan supported this hypothesis. High predation pressure from benthic piscivorous fishes in the southern area (Tsushima) may encourage association with jellyfish, whereas pressure from pelagic predators in the northern area (Maizuru) may encourage settlement to rocky reef habitats in temperate waters. Thus the jellyfish may also function as a vehicle for the northward migration of this species. Guest editors: K. A. Pitt & J. E. Amphibian populations are declining worldwide and this is causing growing concern. High levels of population declines followed by the expansion of red lists are creating demands for effective strategies to maximize conservation efforts for amphibians. Ideally, integrated and comprehensive strategies should be based on complementary information of population and species extinction risk. Here we evaluate the congruence between amphibian extinction risk assessments at the population level (Declining Amphibian Database––DAPTF) and at species level (GAA––IUCN Red List). We used the Declining Amphibian Database––DAPTF that covers 967 time-series records of amphibian population declines assigned into four levels of declines. We assigned each of its corresponding species into GAA––IUCN red list status, discriminated each species developmental mode, and obtained their geographic range size as well. Extinction risk assessments at the population and species level do not fully coincide across geographic realms or countries. In Paleartic, Neartic and Indo-Malayan realms less than 25% of species with reported population declines are formally classified as threatened. In contrast, more than 60% of all species with reported population declines that occur in Australasia and the Neotropics are indeed threatened according to the GAA––IUCN Red List. Species with aquatic development presented proportionally higher extinction risks at both population and species level than those with terrestrial development, being this pattern more prominent at Australasia, Paleartic, and Neartic realms. Central American countries, Venezuela, Mexico and Australia presented the highest congruence between both population and species risk. We address that amphibian conservation strategies could be improved by using complementary information on time-series population trends and species threat. Whenever feasible, conservation assessments should also include life-history traits in order to improve its effectiveness.  相似文献

Pine wilt disease, which can rapidly kill pines, is caused by the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. It is expanding its range in many countries in Asia and measures are being taken at the EU level to prevent its spread from Portugal. Due to the threat to European forests, it is important to prevent additional introductions and target surveillance to the points of entry that pose the greatest risk. In this study, we present a model to identify the European ports from which the nematode can spread most rapidly across Europe. This model describes: (1) the potential spread of the pine wood nematode based on short-distance spread (the active flight of the vector beetles) and long-distance spread (primarily due to human-mediated transportation), and (2) the development of pine wilt disease based on climate suitability and the potential spread of the nematode. Separate introductions at 200 European ports were simulated under various climate change scenarios. We found that the pine wood nematode could invade 19–60% of the study area (30°00 N–72°00 N, 25°00 W–40°00 E) by 2030, with the highest spread from ports located in Eastern and Northern Europe. Based on climate change scenarios, the disease could affect 8–34% of the study area by 2030, with the highest spread from ports located in South-Eastern Europe. This study illustrates how a spread model can be used to determine the critical points of entry for invasive species, so that surveillance can be targeted more accurately and control measures prioritised.  相似文献

As a contribution towards identification of the principal environmental factors involved in cadmium accumulation in Antarctic marine organisms and the establishment of a baseline near the Italian Antarctic Station “Baia Terra Nova”, surface sediments, plankton and benthic organisms were studied in coastal waters of Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea). The cadmium content of sediments was similar to that regarded as background in most marine coastal areas, whereas in surface water, phyto- and zooplankton it was similar to values measured in areas of enhanced upwelling. Algal and animal taxa dominating benthic associations had a higher cadmium content than related species from other seas. Very high concentrations of the metal were found in sponges (10–80 μg/g dw) and in the digestive gland of molluscs (up to 345 μg/g in Neobuccinum eatoni). The rapid regeneration of cadmium and its natural occurrence and bioavailability in highly productive coastal waters seem to be responsible for cadmium accumulation in the tissues of marine organisms near the “Baia Terra Nova” station. The finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides) is one of the smallest cetacean species widely distributed in the shallow coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific Oceans. The population size of the Yangtze subspecies (N. p. asiaeorientalis) has sharply decreased in the last two decades and access to objective data on its population structure and genetic diversity would be of great assistance for their proper management. Here we report on the isolation of nine polymorphic microsatellite using the “Fast Isolation by AFLP of Sequences Containing repeats” (FIASCO) protocol. Polymorphism was assessed using 30 porpoise individuals randomly sampled in the Yangtze River. The number of alleles per locus varies from 2 to 9, with an average value of 5.56, whereas the ranges of observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.300–0.633 (mean 0.496) and 0.473–0.804 (mean 0.659), respectively.  相似文献

We evaluate the conservation status and threats faced by sea turtle nesting populations at Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea (Central Africa). Beaches were monitored to obtain a detailed sea turtle nest census and, where possible, tagging of adult females was undertaken. Four sea turtle species were found nesting in the area: the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), the leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), the olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) and the hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata); with the former two species nesting in regionally important numbers. Nesting activity was concentrated between November and February, with a peak in December–January. Tagging and recapture of green turtles in two consecutive seasons suggested an estimated 560 (interquartile range: 420–1,681) and 414 (interquartile range: 190–1,255) nesting females in the area, respectively. Estimated numbers of nesting leatherbacks ranged from 123 to 215 and 243 to 293 in the first and second season, respectively. The other two species were less abundant (olive ridley: 19–29 and 28–43; hawksbill: 4–10 and 2 turtles). Data were compared with more recent surveys in the area and contextualised with information on human related threats. Despite the size of nesting stocks, ongoing permitted and illegal take of adult turtles at the nesting site constitutes a serious threat for these breeding aggregations. Additionally, tag returns from throughout the Gulf of Guinea suggest that the level of take in regional fisheries may also be a major threat.  相似文献

We assessed the effectiveness of national and international wildlife trade regulations in Asia by surveying four wildlife markets in Myanmar for bears and bear parts. Bears are protected in Myanmar and neighbouring countries, and are included in CITES Appendix I, precluding international trade. Three of the four wildlife markets were situated at the border with neighbouring countries (China and Thailand) whereas the fourth, situated in Myanmar’s interior, also catered to international markets. During seven checks (1999–2006) we recorded 1,200 bear parts, representing a minimum of 215 individual bears. Most items were from Asiatic black bears Ursus thibetanus but also sun bear Helarctos malayanus parts were offered for sale. There were significant temporal and spatial differences in what items were offered for sale. Prices were low (USD 4–40 per item) and the total monetary value of the items for sale was USD 6,500–9,500 (not including gall bladders). Carcasses, skulls, canines, paws, claws, whole skins, pieces of skin, gall bladders and derivates, were openly displayed, with vendors being frank about prices, origin, and potential buyers. Only in the interior were prices quoted in the local currency; at the other three markets currencies of the neighbouring countries were used. Legal (international) trade in bears or bear parts from Myanmar is virtually non-existent, and the observed trade in bear parts strongly indicates a serious lack of enforcement effort. International trade in bear parts from Myanmar is significant, and open, and we conclude that the enforcement of wildlife trade regulations, at least when they concerns bear species, have by and large failed.  相似文献

Synopsis Hippocampus comes is presently exploited at significant rates in the central portion of – and possibly throughout – its range. The species is traded in dried form for traditional medicine and alive for the aquarium trade. Here we provide the most current life history, abundance and distribution information available for H. comes. These data should be helpful to researchers, and to management agencies in countries signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), tasked to implement strategies ensuring that trade is not detrimental to wild populations of H. comes (listed on Appendix II).  相似文献

The physical and biological processes affecting the spatialdistribution of the giant jellyfish Nemopilema nomurai wereinvestigated in the northern East China Sea and southern YellowSea in July 2006, when large abundances of this jellyfish occurredin Korean waters. Well-characterized water masses were detectedduring the study period. These were the Tsushima Current water,Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water and Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW).The spatial distribution of Chl a concentrations estimated byocean colour imagery showed that the CDW flows to the northeast. The CDW was accompanied by high abundances of small and medium-sizedzooplankton (0.2–0.5 mm and 0.5–1.0 mm, respectively)and N. nomurai, in comparison with the other water masses. Large(1.0–2.0 mm) and macro-sized zooplankton (2.0–5.0mm) did not show a relationship with the CDW. The distributionof N. nomurai was very restricted and intimately related withthe CDW. In fact, large abundances only occurred in the westernboundary region of the CDW. The results were supported by Pearson’scorrelation analysis, which showed a positive relationship betweenthe CDW, small- and medium-sized zooplankton and the giant jellyfish. We conclude that the CDW had entrained N. nomurai into the watersoff the southwest coast of the Korean peninsula and it was thentransported into the Yellow and East/Japan seas.  相似文献

To date, a disparate array of concepts and methods have been used to study the growth of jellyfish, with the result that few generalities have emerged which could help, e.g., in predicting growth patterns in unstudied species. It is shown that this situation can be overcome by length-frequency analysis (LFA), applied to jellyfish bell diameter (i.e., “length”) frequency data. A selection of LFA methods (ELEFAN, Wetherall plots and length-converted catch curves, all implemented in the FiSAT software) is applied here to 34 sets of bell diameter frequency data of jellyfish. This led to the estimates of parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF), which, especially in its seasonal form, was found to fit the available size-frequency data reasonably well. We also obtained numerous estimates of mortality, useful for modeling the life history of jellyfish. Finally, by scaling their asymptotic weight (W , a parameter of the VBGF) to the weight they would have if they had the same water content as fish, we show that most jellyfish grow at the same rate as small fishes (guppies and anchovies). As in fish, the VBGF parameters K and W , when plotted in a double logarithmic (“auximetric”) plot, tend to cluster into ellipsoid shapes, which increase in area when shifting from species to genera, families, etc. If validated by subsequent studies, auximetric plots for jellyfish would provide a powerful tool for testing comparative hypotheses on jellyfish life history. To estimate the productivity and grazing impact of a commonappendicularian species Oikopleura dioica in Tokyo Bay, monthlyobservations on its abundance and vertical distribution wereconducted during 2000. The abundance peaked in February andOctober, but was low during summer. Seasonal fluctuations inproductivity were similar to those of the abundance, with maximumvalues of 92, 134 and 508 mg C m–2 day–1 for somatic, new house and discarded house productivity in October and 206mg C m–2 day–1 for fecal pellet productivity inFebruary, respectively. The averaged biomass of O. dioica wasonly 2.5% of that of copepods; however, the secondary productivityof the former corresponded to 12.4% of the latter. Daily grazingimpact on particulate organic carbon ranged from 0.05% to 5%,which is close to the impact by copepods. These results implythat in Tokyo Bay, where small copepods and jellyfish are abundant,O. dioica is an important component of the ecosystem becauseit bridges between small primary producers and higher consumers.  相似文献
