In order to investigate the influence of low relative humidity, we measured saccharin clearance time (SCT), frequency of blinking, heart rate (HR), blood pressure, hydration state of skin, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), recovery sebum level and skin temperature as physiological responses. We asked subjects to judge thermal, dryness and comfort sensations as subjective responses using a rating scale. Sixteen non-smoking healthy male students were selected. The pre-room conditions were maintained at an air temperature (Ta) of 25 degrees C and a relative humidity (RH) of 50%. The test room conditions were adjusted to provide a Ta of 25 degrees C and RH levels of 10%, 30% and 50%.RH had no effect on the activity of the sebaceous gland and on cardiovascular reactions like blood pressure and HR. However, it was obvious that low RH affects SCT, the dryness of the ocular mucosa and the stratum corneum of the skin and causes a decrease in mean skin temperature. Under 30% RH, the eyes and skin become dry, and under 10% RH the nasal mucous membrane becomes dry as well as the eyes and skin, and the mean skin temperature decreases. These findings suggested that to avoid dryness of the eyes and skin, it is necessary to maintain an RH greater than 30%, and to avoid dryness of the nasal mucous membrane, it is necessary to maintain an RH greater than 10%. Subjects felt cold immediately after a change in RH while they had only a slight perception of dryness at the change of humidity.  相似文献

In two Japanese cicadas, Cryptotympana facialis and Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata , with different habitat distributions, fully developed embryos hatch in response to high humidity due to rainfall. Despite the advantage of hatching on rainy days, this trait burdens embryos with an extra period of desiccation until the unpredictable advent of rain. We compared the ability of the fully developed embryos of these cicadas to endure periods of low humidity. Eggs were exposed to a combination of different humidities (43% and 75% relative humidity, RH) and durations (0–15 days), and then transferred to an environment with 100% RH to stimulate hatching. In both species, total hatching rates decreased as duration increased, although there was no significant effect of humidity. In C. facialis , a considerable proportion of the eggs hatched during the desiccation period, and the hatching rate was higher at 75% RH than at 43% RH. After transfer to 100% RH, most hatching occurred within a day regardless of the desiccation level. In G. nigrofuscata , no nymphs hatched during the desiccation periods. However, more eggs required more than a day after transfer to 100% RH to hatch after desiccation at 43% RH than at 75% RH. Consequently, the overall proportion of timely hatching of eggs (eggs hatching within a day of moisture supply) was higher after desiccation at 43% RH in C. facialis , but it was higher after desiccation at 75% RH in G. nigrofuscata . These different physiological responses of the two species may reflect adaptation to habitat dryness.  相似文献

为了研究亚高温下不同空气湿度对番茄植株光合作用及物质积累的影响,本试验利用人工气候室,在11:00—15:00平均温度为33℃的亚高温条件下,设置3个空气相对湿度处理,分别为70%~80%(高湿)、50%~60%(中湿)和不加湿的30%~40%(低湿)。结果表明:在处理25d时,高湿处理番茄叶片叶绿素含量、净光合速率显著高于低湿处理,而低湿处理果实空洞率比高湿处理高18.4%(P<0.05);在33℃亚高温条件下,70%~80%的相对湿度有利于光合作用的增强和果实品质的提高。  相似文献

Hibernation is a period of water deficit for some small mammals, and humidity strongly influences hibernation patterns. Dry conditions reduce length of torpor bouts, stimulate arousals, and decrease overwinter survival. To mitigate these effects, many small mammals hibernate in near saturated (100% RH) conditions. However, big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) hibernate in a wider variety of conditions and tolerate lower humidity than most other bats. To assess arid tolerance in this species, we compared torpid metabolic rates (TMR) and rates of total evaporative water loss (TEWL) between two populations of E. fuscus with differing winter ecologies: one that hibernates in humid karst caves and one that hibernates in relatively dry rock crevices. We used flow-through respirometry to measure TMR and TEWL of bats in humid and dry conditions. Torpid metabolic rates did not differ between populations or with humidity treatments. Rates of TEWL were similar between populations in humid conditions, but higher for cave-hibernating bats than crevice-hibernating bats in dry conditions. Our results suggest that E. fuscus hibernating in arid environments have mechanisms to decrease evaporative water loss that are not evident at more humid sites. Drought tolerance may facilitate the sedentary nature of the species, allowing them to tolerate more variable microclimates during hibernation and thus increasing the availability of overwintering habitat. The ability to survive arid conditions may also lessen the susceptibility of E. fuscus to diseases that affect water balance.  相似文献

Nasal mucous velocity was estimated by following the motion of radiopaque discs of Teflon by means of a fluoroscopic image intensifier. From 5 to 10 discs were deposited on the superior surface of the inferior turbinate with a forceps. No local anesthesia was employed and the subjects experienced no discomfort. The linear velocity of the discs was obtained by playing the videotape onto a television monitor, measuring distance with a ruler, and dividing by elapsed time. Duplicate runs of 1-2 min, 15 min apart were very reproducible but runs at 4-h intervals or daily over a 5-day period had a coefficient of variation of 30%. Average nasal velocity for individual ranged from 0 to 22.5 mm/min and group means ranged from 6. 8 to 10.8 mm/min. There was no statistically significant difference in nasal mucous velocity between young and elderly subjects nor was there a sexual difference. The saccharin test of nasal mucous transport was unsatisfactory because of inability to repeat the test more often than 1-2 h and its propensity to produce mild discomfort in a significant number of subjects. Saccharin times did not correlate significantly with values of nasal mucous velocity.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the influence of very low ambient illumination and complete darkness on the postural sway of young and elderly adults. Eighteen healthy young participants aged 23.8±1.5 years and 26 community-dwelling elderly aged 69.8±5.6 years were studied. Each participant performed four tests while standing on a force platform in the following conditions: in normal light (215 lx) with open eyes and with closed eyes, in very low illumination (0.25 lx) with open eyes, and in complete darkness with open eyes. The sequences of the tests in the altered visual conditions were determined by random blocs. Postural sway was assessed by means of the force platform measurements. The centre of pressure variables: the medio-lateral and antero-posterior path lengths, mean velocities, sway areas, and fractal dimensions were analysed. Very low illumination resulted in a statistically significant increase in postural sway in both the young and elderly groups compared to normal light, although the increase was significantly smaller than those observed in the eyes closed and complete darkness condition, and no significant effects of illumination on fractal dimensions were detected. The gains of the sways in the very low or no illumination conditions relative to the normal light condition were significantly larger in the group of young participants than in the group of elderly participants (up to 50% and 25%, respectively). However, the response patterns to changes in illumination were similar in the young and elderly participants, with the exception of the short-range fractal dimension of the medio-lateral sway. In conclusion, very low illumination resulted in increased postural sway compared to normal illumination; however, in the closed eye and complete darkness conditions, postural sway was significantly higher than in the very low illumination condition regardless of the age of the participants.  相似文献

It was investigated whether there was a critical degree of dryness for induction of genetic changes by drying. Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells were dried in air of 0, 33, 53 and 76% relative humidity (RH). The frequencies of mitotic recombination at ade2, of gene conversion at leul, and of gene mutation at can1 were measured in X2447, XS1473 and S288C strains, respectively.After the cells had been dried at 0% RH for 4 h the frequencies of the genetic changes at ade2, leul and can1 were, respectively, 56, 7 and 3.5 times higher than each spontaneous frequency. Induction rates, defined as the frequencies of the induced genetic changes per unit time (1 h) of drying, were greatly decreased with increase in RH. Partial drying in air of 76% RH up to 4 and 8 h induced no genetic change at ade2 and leul, respectively. It was concluded, therefore, that drying at a certain RH between 53 and 76% gave the critical degree of dryness of cells for the induction of the genetic changes. The water contents of cells (g water per g dry material) were 12% at 53% RH and 21% at 76% RH, whereas the water content of native cells was 212%. Removal of a large amount of cellular water had no effect on the induction of the genetic changes.UV sensitivity of partially dried cells of X2447 for the induction of the genetic change at ade2 drastically increased with decrease in RH between 76 and 53%. The drastic change in the UV sensitivity suggested that photochemical reactivity of DNA of chromosome XV, in which the ade2 locus is located, changed between 76 and 53% RH. It seems that the genetic changes were induced only in the low RH region where DNA in vivo had a different photochemical reactivity.  相似文献

The effect of relative humidity (RH) on formaldehyde penetration of paper, glassine, and cotton was determined by the death rate of bacterial spores in glass tubes covered with these materials. The data show that paper is readily penetrated regardless of RH, but the RH greatly affects the penetration rate of glassine and cotton. A comparison was also made of the effect of RH on the penetrability of formaldehyde generated from Formalin and paraformaldehyde. At low RH, all three closures were penetrated more readily by formaldehyde from paraformaldehyde than from Formalin, but no difference in the two was observed at high RH. It is felt that the difference at low RH is primarily due to the condensation of the vaporized Formalin.  相似文献

Persistence of anhydrous organisms in nature may depend on howlong they remain viable in dry environments. Longevity is determinedby interactions of humidity, temperature, and unknown cellularfactors that affect the propensity for damaging reactions. Herewe describe our research to elucidate those cellular factorsand to ultimately predict how long a population can surviveunder extreme conditions. Loss of viability typically followsa sigmoidal pattern, where a period of small changes precedesa cataclysmic decline. The time for viability to decrease to50% (P50) varied among seed species and among 10 phylogeneticallydiverse organisms. When stored at elevated temperatures of 35°Cand 32% relative humidity (RH), P50 ranged from about a weekfor spores of Serratia marcescens to several years for frondsof Selaginella lepidophylla. Most of the species studied survivedlongest at low humidity (10–20% RH), but suffered undercomplete dryness. Temperature dependencies of aging kineticsappeared similar among diverse organisms despite the disparatelongevities. The effect of temperature on seed aging rates wasconsistent with the temperature dependency of molecular mobilityof aqueous glasses, with both showing a reduction by severalorders of magnitude when seeds were cooled from 60°C to0°C. Longevity is an inherited trait in seeds, but its complexexpression among widely divergent taxa suggests that it developedthrough multiple pathways.  相似文献

Reactive hyperemia (RH) in forearm muscle or skin microcirculation has been considered as a surrogate endpoint in clinical studies of cardiovascular disease. We evaluated two potential confounders that might limit such use of RH, namely laterality of measurement and intake of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). Twenty-three young non-smoking healthy adults were enrolled. In Experiment 1 (n=16), the RH elicited by 3 min of ischemia was recorded in the muscle (strain gauge plethysmography, hand excluded) and skin (laser Doppler imaging) of both forearms. In Experiment 2 (n=7), RH was determined in the dominant forearm only, one hour following oral acetylsalicylic acid (1 g) or placebo. In Experiment 1, peak RH was identical in both forearms, and so were the corresponding durations of responses. RH lasted significantly less in muscle than in skin (p=0.003), a hitherto unrecognized fact. In the skin, acetylsalicylate reduced duration (43 vs. 57.4 s for placebo, p=0.03), without affecting the peak response. In muscle, duration tended to decrease with acetylsalicylate (21.4 vs. 26.0 s with placebo, p=0.06) and the peak increase in blood flow was blunted (27.2 vs. 32.4 ml/min/100 ml tissue with placebo, p=0.003). We conclude that, when using RH as a surrogate endpoint in studies of cardiovascular disease, a confounding by laterality of measurement need not be feared, but NSAIDS may have an influence, although perhaps not on the peak response in the skin.  相似文献

目的 探讨蜂胶的乙醇提取物(EEP)的安全性。方法 用0.5%的EEP对家兔进行皮肤急性毒性试验、皮肤刺激试验以及对豚鼠的过敏试验。结果 EEP低剂量、高剂量皮肤破损组和对照组皮肤破损组各有一只家免,在24 h观察到皮肤破损处微红,48 h消失,其余各实验兔的皮肤、毛发、眼、粘膜、呼吸、中枢神经系统均无任何中毒表现;按照皮肤刺激反应强度,评价标准,完整皮肤组平均分为0,判为无刺激性;破损皮肤组平均分值为033<0.50,亦判为无刺激性;A组空白对照组和B组EEP组动物均无红斑和水肿反应,判为无致敏性。结论 蜂胶提取物EEP在对实验动物体外寄生虫净化中安全、无毒、无刺激。  相似文献

目的探讨异麦芽低聚糖(Isomalto oligosaccharide,IMO)对衰老模型小鼠肠黏膜免疫功能的调节作用及可能机制。方法昆明纯系小鼠随机分为Young组、Aging组、IMO组和IMOLCM组。采用D-半乳糖造成衰老模型后,给予相应药物干预。采用细菌定量测定法检测肠道菌群、放射免疫法检测肠黏膜sIgA、免疫组化法检测肠黏膜IgA^+浆细胞的表达。结果与Young组相比,Aging组小鼠存在肠道菌群失调、肠黏膜sIgA含量降低、IgA^+浆细胞表达减少(P〈0.05);与Aging组相比,IMO组肠道菌群失调状况有所改善,肠黏膜sIgA含量增加、IgA^+浆细胞的表达增加(P〈0.05);与IMO组相比,IMOLCM组肠道菌群失调再次出现,肠黏膜sIgA降低、IgA^+浆细胞的表达降低(P〈0.05)。结论异麦芽低聚糖可改善衰老模型小鼠肠道菌群失调状态和提高肠黏膜免疫功能;异麦芽低聚糖提高肠黏膜免疫功能可能主要由增加益生菌数量间接实现的。  相似文献

Survival was determined for Escherichia coli B disseminated as an aerosol from the dry state. Survival in nitrogen, like that for wet dissemination, was better at low than at high relative humidity (RH). At high RH, survival was characterized by critical zones of instability in survival as a function of RH, instability occurring at 100, 95, 78, 70, and 60% RH. In air, survival was inferior to that in nitrogen at low RH, whereas the converse was found at high RH. The effect was attributed to oxygen. In general, results support the conclusion that to the first approximation survival is related to bacterial water content, the latter increasing with RH. However, a more detailed analysis of results indicates that survival might not be exactly related to bacterial water content. It is shown that death occurred because of rehydration and that the pretreatment of E. coli B affected its aerosol stability characteristics; i.e., wet and dry disseminated aerosols are not equivalent.  相似文献

Abstract The effects of relative humidity (RH) on cocoon formation and survival in the braconid parasitoid wasp Cotesia glomerata (L.) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) are investigated under various humidity conditions (50, 75, 90, 95 and 100% RH) at 20 °C and under an LD 16 : 8 h photoperiod. The mortality rate at the time of egression from hosts under 100% RH is significantly higher than for other RHs. Cocoon clusters formed at 100% RH spread significantly more than those formed at 50, 75, or 90% RH. Developmental periods differ significantly among RHs under which wasps developed. The mean period from the egression from hosts to adult emergence is 8.7 days when developed at 50–95% RHs, and 8.0 days at 100% RH. The emergence rates of C. glomerata that are maintained under the same humidity conditions after egression from hosts are not significantly different among RHs. However, emergence rates from cocoons that are transferred from 100% RH to 50 and 75% RH are < 70%, although the rates are > 90% in most cases. Some wasps do not emerge from cocoons: more than 60% die after adult eclosion at all RHs; the relative frequency of adult deaths is approximately 90% at 50% RH. Relative humidity influences the cluster and cocoon status strongly: both good clusters and cocoons are formed at low RHs. Emergence rates from cocoons of different ranks are significantly different: the rates of low‐rank cocoons are low at low RHs. The survival of C. glomerata is affected strongly by RH through cocoon formation.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate under a controlled environment, the effect of temperature on the survival and infectivity of Pseudotheraptus devastans Distant, a cassava anthracnose disease vector. The insect P. devastans was collected from young cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) field plots, at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria. A mixture of the different developmental stages of eggs, first to fifth instar nymphs, and adults, were incubated in controlled environment chambers, under various constant temperatures of: 15, 17, 22, 25, 27, 30, and 35°C. Relative humidity at different temperature conditions were recorded and maintained at 90%, 85%, 80%, 75%, 70%, 65%, and 60%, respectively. A significant increase in insect survival was observed between 22 and 27°C temperature conditions while a significant decrease in survival was observed at 15°C and above 30°C. Lesion number, lesion diameter and infectivity among the insect stages varied as a function of temperature and relative humidity. Infectivity was highest at 22–25°C maintained at 75–80% RH and lowest at 15°C and above 30°C maintained respectively, at 65% RH and 90% RH. There was considerable low vector infectivity due to low survival of the insects at extreme temperatures.  相似文献

The influence of gamma radiation on the mating behaviour of the red date palm weevil (RDPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier), and the efficacy of sterile insect technique (SIT) under different levels of relative humidity (RH) were studied. No adverse effects of gamma radiation were observed on the mating behaviour parameters of the RDPW, such as mate recognition time, mating duration, mating frequency within a 30‐min period and duration between consecutive matings. However, the weevils were sexually stimulated during aggregation. RH significantly affected egg laying as well as egg hatching. Significantly lower egg laying and hatching were recorded at 25% RH than at higher humidity levels, suggesting that low humidity conditions are better for successful SIT manipulations in the field. Lifespan of irradiated RDPW males was significantly shorter than that of un‐irradiated controls, irrespective of RH level.  相似文献

Overall quantity of microorganisms and their relative prevalence on nasal mucous membrane in patients with allergic rhinosinusitis are determined. Microbial flora in studied group was characterized qualitatively and quantitatively. Obtained results showed that there were changes of microbiocenosis of nasal mucous membrane during allergic rhinosinusitis and in characteristics of species in Staphylococcus genus.  相似文献

Norovirus (NoV) is one of the main causative agents of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. In temperate climates, outbreaks peak during the winter season. The mechanism by which climatic factors influence the occurrence of NoV outbreaks is unknown. We hypothesized that humidity is linked to NoV seasonality. Human NoV is not cultivatable, so we used cultivatable murine norovirus (MNV) as a surrogate to study its persistence when exposed to various levels of relative humidity (RH) from low (10% RH) to saturated (100% RH) conditions at 9 and 25°C. In addition, we conducted similar experiments with virus-like particles (VLPs) from the predominant GII-4 norovirus and studied changes in binding patterns to A, B, and O group carbohydrates that might reflect capsid alterations. The responses of MNV and VLP to humidity were somewhat similar, with 10 and 100% RH exhibiting a strong conserving effect for both models, whereas 50% RH was detrimental for MNV infectivity and VLP binding capacity. The data analysis suggested that absolute humidity (AH) rather than RH is the critical factor for keeping NoV infectious, with an AH below 0.007 kg water/kg air being favorable to NoV survival. Retrospective surveys of the meteorological data in Paris for the last 14 years showed that AH average values have almost always been below 0.007 kg water/kg air during the winter (i.e., 0.0046 ± 0.0014 kg water/kg air), and this finding supports the fact that low AH provides an ideal condition for NoV persistence and transmission during cold months.  相似文献

Declining viability of pollen during storage at 24° C in atmospheres of 40% relative humidity (RH) and 75% RH was studied, with special emphasis on lipid changes. Pollens of Papaver rhoeas and Narcissus poeticus, characterized by a high linolenic acid content, were compared with Typha latifolia pollen which has a low linolenic acid content. The rationale behind this was to answer the question of whether lipid peroxidation is involved in the rapid viability loss and reduced membrane integrity of, in particular, the unsaturated-lipid pollen types. Viability and membrane integrity degraded more rapidly at 75% RH than at 40% RH. All pollen species showed deesterification of acyl chains of lipids but no detectable peroxidation at both RH levels. Considerable amounts of lipid-soluble antioxidants were detected that did not degrade during storage. Free fatty acids and lysophospholipids were formed during storage, the effects of which on membranes are discussed. These degradation products were very prominent in the short-lived Papaver pollen. The loss of viability does coincide with phospholipid deesterification. A significant decrease of the phospholipid content occurred at 75% RH, but not at 40% RH. Based on compositional analyses of phospholipids and newly formed free fatty acids, it was concluded that the deesterification of acyl chains from the lipids occurred at random. We suggest that, due to the low water content of the pollen, free radicals rather than unspecific acyl hydrolases are involved in the deesterification process.  相似文献

The role of neuroendocrine cells (NC) in physiology and pathology of the human's respiratory tract is not fully understood. The aim of the study was the quantitative and morphometric assessment of NC in nasal mucosa in some pathological states. PATIENTS AND METHOD: 40 patients, aged 28-63 years, with clinical signs of chronic, hypertrophic rhinosinusitis were qualified for the study. Rhinitis chronica hypertrophica coexisted with aspirin triad or asthma in 10 patients (group I), with advanced obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in 10 patients (respiratory disturbance index, RDI>40, group II). Group III consisted of 10 patients with simple rhinitis chronica hypertrophica who habitually smoked cigarettes (at least 20 cigarettes a day) while 10 non-smoking patients with simple rhinitis chronica hypertrophica were qualified to the control group. Fragments of nasal mucosa of approximately 0.5 cm(2) were collected from medial or inferior turbinate during mucoplasty procedures. NC were detected immunohistochemically using antibodies against chromogranin A (DAKO). The microscopic sections were evaluated in the light microscopy. RESULTS: The study did not reveal the increased number of NC in examined fragments of nasal mucosa. Scattered NC were detected in single preparations of nasal mucous membrane in some patients in all groups. The number of detected neuroendocrine cells did not differ statistically between groups.  相似文献
