Analysis of fossil diatom assemblages recovered from a 12.2 m core reveals a series of distinct floristic associations. The associations present are correlated with sediment type and reflect successive stages in the development of the lake. A basal red clay sediment contains a planktonic association characteristic of large, proglacial lakes. At 10.0 m core depth, sediment type changes to fine sand containing a higher abundance of benthic species indicating reduction of water depth at the deposition site. Marl sediments begin at 9.7 m and contain an association characteristic of a small, shallow, oligotrophic lake. At 8.8 m the marl sequence is interrupted by highly organic sediment containing a eutrophic plankton association. From 8.5 to 7.6 m the sediment type grades from marl to organic, apparently reduced sediments and diatom associations present contain successively higher percentages of planktonic species associated with eutrophic habitats. By the 7.6 m level a eutrophic plankton association, similar to the modern flora, is established and remains remarkably constant to the surface of the section.  相似文献

463 taxa of diatoms have been recorded from the pelagic and littoral plankton, benthos and periphyton of Lake Peipsi-Pihkva. This typical eutrophic plain lake has many common features with large lakes of both Central and North Europe. As to the richness of diatom taxa, L. Peipsi- Pihkva surpasses other eutrophic lowland lakes, which can be explained by the size of this lake, and by the variety of living conditions in it. The list of taxa as well as notes about rare and phytogeographically interesting diatoms are presented.Deceased.  相似文献

A eutrophic lake at Cierva Point, Antarctic Peninsula was surveyedduring the summers of 1997 and 1998. Phytoplankton size fractions(micro-, nano- and picoplankton) were analysed, as well as theabundance of bacterioplankton and planktonic ciliates. No permanentvertical stratification was found owing to the shallowness ofthe lake. Both nutrient concentrations and chlorophyll a valuesindicated highly eutrophic conditions, which are a consequenceof a natural enrichment by seabirds. Significant differencesin temperature between the 1997 and 1998 seasons strongly influencedmost of the biological features. The phytoplankton communityshowed a high algal species-richness, with important contributionsof epilithic, cryobiontic and soil algae. The dominant algalgroup was Chlorophyta, mainly represented by Chlamydomonas aff.celerrima, followed by Chl. aff. braunii. Some replacement ofphytoplanktonic species took place in summer and was more evidentin 1998. Picophytoplankton reached high densities, similar tothose reported from other Antarctic lakes. Bacterioplanktonabundances were typical of eutrophic and hypereutrophic lakes. There was a positive correlation between bacterial and totalphytoplankton abundance. Ciliates reached some very high peaks, with higher figures than those reported for other Antarcticsystems with similar trophic status.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Constrained cluster analysis of thirty-five surface sediment diatom assemblages shows that Lough Erne, a complex multi-basin lake in Northern Ireland, can be sub-divided into four main zones.
2. All areas of the lake system have planktonic diatoms typical of eutrophic lakes but the lack of small Stephanodiscus species in zone 4 suggests that this area of the system is least productive.
3. Surface sediment diatom assemblages can be used to assess spatial variations in complex lake systems and can thereby be used as a guide to the choice of sites for water quality monitoring and sediment coring.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Potential phosphatase activity and phytoplankton from several lakes of different character were compared in order to evaluate the importance of lake water pH and phytoplankton composition for the activity and pH optimum of lake water phosphatases.
2. In oligotrophic lakes, in which phytoplankton biomass was most often dominated by Ochromonadaceae spp., optimum phosphate activity was found at pH values <6. In eutrophic lakes, where species of Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae dominated the phytoplankton biomass, optimum phosphatase activity was found at pH 7.5 or 8.5.
3. The pH optimum of phosphatase activity often differed from the corresponding lake water pH.
4. Experimental variation in phosphorus availability resulted in predictable changes in phosphatase activity. However, specific phosphatase activity, calculated per biomass of phytoplankton, was dependent on plankton species composition.  相似文献

1. In cultural landscapes, lake response to climate can be masked by land‐use change and nutrient loss from their catchments. Palaeolimnological methods were used to reconstruct the ecological response of diatoms in a eutrophic lowland lake (White Lough, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland) to altered nutrient P loading and precipitation variability over c. 100 years. 2. 210Pb‐dated sediment cores were analysed to determine diatom assemblage variability, biogenic silica concentration, geochemical phosphorus concentration and accumulation rate. Manure P and agricultural N surplus data were collated from documentary sources. Long‐term trends in annual temperature and precipitation were derived from the Armagh Observatory. 3. Diatom community turnover from 1890 until c. 1960 was limited, and assemblages were dominated by Aulacoseira subarctica; after this date, changes primarily reflected a eutrophication sequence owing to increased diffuse nutrient inputs associated with intensification of land use (external P loading increased by a factor of three). 4. Diatom and biogenic Si profiles were compared with North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) records, an index of regional weather patterns. Biogenic Si exhibited a c. 7‐year cycle, which tracked a cycle of similar timescale in the Armagh climate record for dry summers. In turn, this cycle was related to the variation in the NAO. 5. Monitoring data from 1971 to 2007 of nitrate exports from the Blackwater River showed that these too followed a roughly 7‐year cycle at least up to 2000, in which dry summers were followed by sharp increases in nitrate export. It is argued that diatom production in White Lough reflects the cyclic behaviour in nitrate loading and the constraints that nitrogen availability places on the spring diatom bloom in a lake that is dominated by cyanobacteria.  相似文献

Lake St. Clair phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance and composition was analyzed during the period of May to September 1984. In addition, size-fractionated primary productivity and other limnological parameters were measured. Highest phytoplankton biomass was observed during spring (May) with high values for the southern and southeastern regions of the lake. Seasonally, the mean phytoplankton biomass ranged between 0.17 and 1.18 g m-3 with high values recorded during spring (May, June) compared to summer. In the spring the phytoplankton was dominated by Diatomeae followed by Chrysophyceae and Cryptophyceae. During the summer the diatoms showed a decreasing trend due to the relative prevalence of Chrysophyceae, Cryptophyceae, and Chlorophyta. The species composition was oligotrophic-mesotrophic with mixed occurrence of some eutrophic species. The phytoplankton size composition indicated dominance of microplankton/netplankton (> 20 µm) and ultraplankton (< 20 µm) during spring and summer respectively. On an overall basis ultraplankton contributed overwhelmingly to primary productivity, as much as 75 percent in the summer. The mean zooplankton biomass ranged from 173.0 to 1306.0 mg l- dominated by Cladocerans (bosminids) in contrast to the other Great Lakes. Statistical evaluation of the phytoplankton — nutrient-contaminant interactions revealed positive correlations with heavy metals, suggestive of a physiological adaptation to contamination from the chemical valley. Based on low biomass, high Production/Biomass ratio, dominance of ultraplankton, characteristic species composition and plankton spectra, the lake appears to be an oligotrophic-mesotrophic perturbed ecosystem.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The seasonal microdistribution of physico-chemical features and plankton were examined at close intervals in a high elevation (2493m) senescent crateri lake (1m deep) in the arid southwestern U.S.A.
2. The protective volcanic rim and dense growth of provided highly stable thermal conditions throughout much of the year with the thermocline frequently in the top 30cm of the water column during the summer and dissolved oxygen typically <3.0mgl−1 in surface waters and <1.0mgl−1 below 50cm.
3. The microdistribution of both phytoplankton and zooplankton was examined at close intervals (10cm) throughout the water column with the aid of a peristaltic pump.
4. Aglaodiaptomus leptopus , along with Dinobryon sertularia and certain diatom species, were largely restricted to the top 30cm, while the colonial phytoflagellate, Pyrobotrys elongata and certain euglenoids were mostly located in the anaerobic lower strata.
5. Cryptomonas obovata demonstrated subsurface maxima at various locations within the water column depending upon season.
6. The distribution of plankton was also compared during daylight and darkness on one date.  相似文献

Species composition, quantity and distribution of diatoms in both the plankton and the surface sediments (0–30 cm) of mesotrophic Lake Krasnoye and eutrophic Lake Vishnevskoye (Karelian Isthmus) were studied. In the mesotrophic lake the composition of dominant diatoms (mainly Melosira) corresponded to those in the plankton. The Araphidineae/Centrales (A/C) ratio was 0.2–0.3%, increasing in the upper layers to 7%. Alkaliphilous and alkalibiontic forms constituted 60% of the total. In the eutrophic lake diatoms with thin valves (mainly Synedra) predominated in the plankton but their quantity in the sediments was insignificant in comparison with other plankton. Nevertheless, the A/C ratio was much higher, 17–35%. Alkaliphilous and alkalibiontic forms accounted for 78–90% of the total number of valves. In both lakes the highest number of diatom valves was registered in the upper layer of the sediments. From the ratio of the total number of diatoms in the upper 5 cm layer to their annual flux to the sediment from the plankton the approximate sediment accumulation rate was calculated to be 1.9 mm a?1 for the mesotrophic lake and 2.5 mm a?1 for the eutrophic one.  相似文献

The zooplankton community of a subtropical, eutrophic lake was studied over an annual cycle. Mesocyclops edax, the numerically dominant crustacean, exhibited a stationary age distribution for most of the year (July–March). Per capita growth rates (r) of M. edax approximated zero throughout most of the study, indicating a close correspondence between birth and death rates. High death rates in the spring and summer probably were due to intense predation, since physiological mortality was low and predators were abundant. Multiple regression analyses indicated that much of the variation in M. edax birth rates could be explained by abundance of their animal prey. Other plankton in this lake exhibited considerable seasonality, but not to the marked degree characteristic of temperate populations. The number of zooplankton species was low and cladocerans were scarce, as is characteristic of many eutrophic Florida Lakes.  相似文献

1. We report on a long-term study (1975–94) of water temperatures and plankton in a eutrophic lake (Heiligensee, Berlin, Germany). Using a phenomenological approach, we use historical data to infer how an increase in air temperature has influenced a natural zooplankton community.
2. Air temperatures in Berlin showed a significantly rising trend between 1975 and 1994. Mean winter air temperatures in the last 8 years always exceeded the long-term mean.
3. A rising trend was also found for April water temperature, which increased significantly beginning in 1988–89. An increase of 2.58°C in the last 21 years was recorded using a linear model. A significantly decreasing trend was found in June but no trend was noted for the other summer months.
4. Phytoplankton composition shifted from a dominance of diatoms and cryptophytes during winter and spring in the 1980s towards a dominance of cyanobacteria in 1990–94.
5. The dominant zooplankton species in spring shifted in recent years from the large-bodied Daphnia galeata to the smaller D. cucullata . Cyclops kolensis , previously the only invertebrate predator during winter, decreased in abundance while C. vicinus , usually present during spring and autumn, increased in abundance and was numerous during winter, a season passed in diapause in the earlier years.
6. Because direct and indirect temperature effects are species specific, we put forward the hypothesis that zooplankton species, rather than functional groups, are the nexus between environmental stress, such as rising air temperatures, and ecosystem changes.  相似文献

The results of these studies indicate that the first diatom flora developed at the 13-meter level. The flora at 12 meters increased. At the 11- and 9-meter levels the lake became increasingly eutrophic. Both plankton and benthic forms were present. At the 8- and 7-meter levels the lake was in a transitional stage from lake to bog conditions. From 6 meters to the surface bog conditions were present.  相似文献

The seasonal changes in phytoplankton biomass and species diversity in a shallow, eutrophic Danish lake are described and related to different disturbance events acting on the phytoplankton community. Both the spring diatom maximum and the summer bloom of the filamentous blue-green alga, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs, coincided with low values of phytoplankton species diversity and equitability. Diatom collapse was mainly due to internal modifications as nutrient depletion (Si, P) caused by rapid growth of phytoplankton, and increased grazing activity from zooplankton. A large population of Daphnia longispina O.F. Müller in June effectively removed smaller algal competitors, thus favouring the development of a huge summer bloom (140 mm3 l–1) of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. Heavy rainfall and storms in late July increased the loss of Apahnizomenon by out-flow and disturbed the stratification of the lake. These events caused a marked decline in phytoplankton biomass but had no effect on species diversity. A second storm period in late August circulated the lake completely and was followed by a rapid increase in phytoplankton diversity, and a change in the phytoplankton community structure from dominance of large, slow-growing K-selected species (Aphanizomenon) to small, fast-growing r-selected species (cryptomonads).  相似文献

Loch Leven is a shallow, eutrophic lake in the Scottish lowlands that is famous for its brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) fishery. Studies of planktonic rotifer populations began here in January 1977. Since then, samples have been collected and analysed at more or less weekly intervals. Additional information on the composition and abundance of phytoplankton and crustacean zooplankton species, and on a variety of physical and chemical determinants, has been recorded on each sampling occasion.Long-term datasets, such as that described above, are invaluable for identifying interactions between components of the plankton that only appear for short periods each year, as these interactions would probably be overlooked in data spanning a shorter period of time. This study uses the long-term data from Loch Leven to examine the food and temperature requirements of the summer rotifer species Trichocerca pusilla (Lauterborn). The results suggest that T. pusilla prefers water temperatures above 12 °C and that it feeds, primarily, on the filamentous diatom Aulacoseira spp. During the summer months, its abundance was closely related to the availability of this diatom. When filaments of Aulacoseira spp. were abundant, rotifer densities reached 1000–3000 ind. l–1 and when they were scarce (e.g. 1980, 1997 and 1998) T. pusilla densities also remained low (i.e. less than 100 ind. l–1). The reason for the success or failure of Aulacoseira during the summer months each year is unclear but, in general, its abundance was related to the availability of dissolved silica in the water.  相似文献

1. Variations in the light regime can affect the availability and quality of food for zooplankton grazers as well as their exposure to fish predation. In northern lakes light is particularly low in winter and, with increasing warming, the northern limit of some present-day plankton communities may move further north and the plankton will thus receive less winter light.
2. We followed the changes in the biomass and community structure of zooplankton and phytoplankton in a clear and a turbid shallow lake during winter (November–March) in enclosures both with and without fish and with four different light treatments (100%, 55%, 7% and <1% of incoming light).
3. In both lakes total zooplankton biomass and chlorophyll- a were influenced by light availability and the presence of fish. Presence of fish irrespective of the light level led to low crustacean biomass, high rotifer biomass and changes in the life history of copepods. The strength of the fish effect on zooplankton biomass diminished with declining light and the effect of light was strongest in the presence of fish.
4. When fish were present, reduced light led to a shift from rotifers to calanoid copepods in the clear lake and from rotifers to cyclopoid copepods in the turbid lake. Light affected the phytoplankton biomass and, to a lesser extent, the phytoplankton community composition and size. However, the fish effect on phytoplankton was overall weak.
5. Our results from typical Danish shallow eutrophic lakes suggest that major changes in winter light conditions are needed in order to have a significant effect on the plankton community. The change in light occurring when such plankton communities move northwards in response to global warming will mostly be of modest importance for this lake type, at least for the rest of this century in an IPCC A2 scenario, while stronger effects may be observed in deep lakes.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1, The seasonal changes in filament dimensions and the occurrence of separation valves in a population of Melosira granulata (Ehrenb.) Ralfs were investigated in a eutrophic lake in southern England. Experiments were carried out in culture to study the effects of various environmental factors on the diatom's morphology.
2. Major blooms of M. granulata occurred from September to October, coinciding with an increase in mean filament length brought about by the high growth rate of the diatom. This increase was controlled by a reduction in the frequency of separation valve production. A similar increase in filament length occurred in rapidly growing cultures.
3. The population was lost from the epilimnion when thermal stratification occurred. Immediately prior to this the population consisted of short filaments.
4. The mean filament length was greatest during occasional summer blooms and was again controlled by a reduction in the frequency of separation valve production. This appeared to be a response to the reduced nutrient concentration in the lake. This is supported by similar morphological changes in low nutrient cultures.
5. Increases in the filament length of the diatom were accompanied by increases in the diatom's sinking velocity. The length increase thus ensured its rapid return to the sediment, after summer growth periods, where the cells could be replenished with nutrients.  相似文献

Seasonal variation of the biomass of plankton in Lake Yunoko, a eutrophic lake in Japan at an altitude of 1478 in, was followed by measuring simultaneously the quantities of chlorophyll, protein, RNA and DNA in water samples harvested from different depths at a definite site in different seasons of a year. The contents of the four cellular constituents and the sum of them in a given water column showed characteristic seasonal changes during the year. Various ratios derived from the four contents were grouped into two distinct types; one is the winter-spring type and the other the summer-autumn type. It was found that the sum of the four contents and the ratio of the protein-content to the RNA-content were quantitatively related to the chlorophyll-content of the water. Based on the assumption that a certain water sample contained only photosynthetic plankton, analyses were made to estimate the proportions of photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic plankton to the total planktonic mass, the growth rates of these plankton, and the net productivity of the lake.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. A model relating log chlorophyll a concentration to log epilimnetic total phosphorus (TP) concentration was re-examined based on: (a) comparative and temporal studies of four stratifying Wisconsin and other highly eutrophic temperate lakes; (b) comparative summer lake surveys from Iowa and Alberta.
2. Although P-limited, deeper lakes with long hydraulic residence times and low external and internal nutrient loading in summer had summer chlorophyll a yields below model predictions based on spring and summer epilimnetic TP concentrations.
3. For lakes with summer epilimnetic TP between 30 and 80 mg m−3, chlorophyll a concentrations exceeded model predictions based on summer TP. This relationship held even for Lake Delavan, Wisconsin, where the ratio of available N to P was unfavourably low during spring turnover, and where the trans-thermocline N:P flux ratio was sub-optimal for algal needs in early summer.
4. With increasing summer TP concentrations and/or increasing epilimnetic circulation depth (>5m), chlorophyll a concentrations fell below model predictions—independent of the potential for N-limitation. This plateauing in chlorophyll a response occurred at lower epilimnetic TP content (−2) in lakes with elevated non-algal light extinction coefficients. Using Tailing's algorithm for the'column compensation point' (algal photosynthesis = algal respiration over diel cycle), light limitation best explains this fall-off in chlorophyll a yield.
5. The failure of the Dillon & Rigler (1974) spring TP v . summer chlorophyll a model for these Wisconsin lakes is unrelated to N-limitation. Instead, it reflects internal adjustment in take TP in response to stratification and seasonal external P loading.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. A novel mechanism of microlamina formation in oligomictic lakes is proposed. During spring and summer in Zaca Lake, an oligomictic lake in Santa Barbara, California, a light-coloured microlamina is formed. During winter, a mass mortality of sulphur-rich phototrophic bacteria occurs following the ventilation of the chemocline or the overturn of the lake. When this occurs, oxygen is introduced into the chemocline killing most of the anaerobic bacteria. When these sulphur-laden bacteria die and settle to the bottom of the lake, they form a black microlamina which is rich in ferrous monosulphides.
2. The varved stratigraphy of the Zaca Lake sediment core presents an opportunity to correlate stratigraphic events in the lake's varved sediments with events reported for its catchment over the last 200 years.
3. Colonization by Europeans dates back to the 1760s, making this one of the best-documented histories for a small lake in North America. A number of events have been correlated with stratigraphic information from the lake's varved cores.
4. Eutrophic diatom indicator species disappear downcore, where they are replaced by meso- and oligotrophic indicators. In addition, pollen from exotic trees planted in the lake's catchment appears at specific core depths associated with their pollen production stage.  相似文献
