Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide. Atherosclerosis and unstable plaques are underlying causes for cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular disease is associated with consumption of diets high in saturated fats. In contrast there is increasing evidence that higher intakes of dietary n-3 fatty acids decrease risk for cardiovascular disease. Recent studies are beginning to clarify how n-3 compared with saturated fatty acids influence cardiovascular disease risk via pathways in the arterial wall. In this paper we will review studies that report on mechanisms whereby dietary fatty acids affect atherosclerosis through modulation of arterial wall lipid deposition, inflammation, cell proliferation, and plaque vulnerability.  相似文献

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Of all known dietary factors, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids may be the most protective against death from coronary heart disease. New evidence has confirmed and refined the cardioprotective role of these fatty acids. RECENT FINDINGS: Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation reduces the risk of sudden cardiac death and death from any cause within 4 months in post-myocardial infarction patients. Evidence continues to accrue for benefits in the primary prevention of coronary heart disease and stroke, and an anti-arrhythmogenic mechanism is emerging as the most likely explanation. SUMMARY: Current evidence suggests that individuals with coronary artery disease may reduce their risk of sudden cardiac death by increasing their intake of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids by approximately 1 g per day.  相似文献

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: N-3 fatty acids from fish reduce cardiovascular mortality including sudden cardiac death. In this paper, the authors discuss the results of human studies with regard to the hypothesis that n-3 fatty acids reduce the risk of fatal coronary heart disease through antiarrhythmic effects. RECENT FINDINGS: Results from two recent clinical trials do not support a protective effect of n-3 fatty acids. In light of the earlier published bulk of evidence that n-3 fatty acids reduce cardiovascular mortality and sudden cardiac death, it is hard to explain these findings. Two recent observational studies confirmed that intake of n-3 fatty acids from fish is associated with less cardiovascular disease in the general population. They indicated that the protective effect of a fish meal may depend on the n-3 fatty acid content or preparation method and suggested a protective effect on arrhythmia rather than on atherosclerosis. Intervention studies on electrophysiological predictors of arrhythmia do not clearly confirm a beneficial effect of n-3 fatty acids. However, most of these studies were small or performed in healthy populations. SUMMARY: The available evidence still suggests that n-3 fatty acids may prevent fatal cardiac arrhythmia, but more conclusive studies are urgently needed.  相似文献

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is one of the major leading global causes of death. Growing evidence has demonstrated that gut microbiota (GM) and its metabolites play a pivotal role in the onset and progression of atherosclerosis (AS), now known as GM-artery axis. There are interactions between dietary lipids and GM, which ultimately affect GM and its metabolites. Given these two aspects, the GM-artery axis may play a mediating role between dietary lipids and AS. Diets rich in saturated fatty acids (SFAs), omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-6 PUFAs), industrial trans fatty acids (TFAs), and cholesterol can increase the levels of atherogenic microbes and metabolites, whereas monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), ruminant TFAs, and phytosterols (PS) can increase the levels of antiatherogenic microbes and metabolites. Actually, dietary phosphatidylcholine (PC), sphingomyelin (SM), and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) have been demonstrated to affect AS via the GM-artery axis. Therefore, that GM-artery axis acts as a communication bridge between dietary lipids and AS. Herein, we will describe the molecular mechanism of GM-artery axis in AS and discuss the complex interactions between dietary lipids and GM. In particular, we will highlight the evidence and potential mechanisms of dietary lipids affecting AS via GM-artery axis.  相似文献

Complications of vascular diseases, including atherosclerosis, are the number one cause of death in Western societies. Dysfunction of endothelial cells is a critical underlying cause of the pathology of atherosclerosis. Lipid rafts, and especially caveolae, are enriched in endothelial cells, and down-regulation of the caveolin-1 gene may provide protection against the development of atherosclerosis. There is substantial evidence that exposure to environmental pollution is linked to cardiovascular mortality, and that persistent organic pollutants can markedly contribute to endothelial cell dysfunction and an increase in vascular inflammation. Nutrition can modulate the toxicity of environmental pollutants, and evidence suggests that these affect health and disease outcome associated with chemical insults. Because caveolae can provide a regulatory platform for pro-inflammatory signalling associated with vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, we suggest a link between atherogenic risk and functional changes of caveolae by environmental factors such as dietary lipids and organic pollutants. For example, we have evidence that endothelial caveolae play a role in uptake of persistent organic pollutants, an event associated with subsequent production of inflammatory mediators. Functional properties of caveolae can be modulated by nutrition, such as dietary lipids (e.g. fatty acids) and plant-derived polyphenols (e.g. flavonoids), which change activation of caveolae-associated signalling proteins. The following review will focus on caveolae providing a platform for pro-inflammatory signalling, and the role of caveolae in endothelial cell functional changes associated with environmental mediators such as nutrients and toxicants, which are known to modulate the pathology of vascular diseases.  相似文献

The supply and demand of omega‐3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (ω‐3 HUFA) in natural ecosystems may lead to resource limitation in a diverse array of animal taxa. Here, we review why food quality in terms of ω‐3 HUFAs is important, particularly for neural tissue, across a diversity of animal taxa ranging from invertebrate zooplankton to vertebrates (including humans). Our review is focused on ω‐3 HUFAs rather than other unsaturated fatty acids because these compounds are especially important biochemically, but scarce in nature. We discuss the dichotomy between ω‐3 HUFA availability between aquatic primary producers, which are often rich in these compounds, and terrestrial primary producers, which are contain little to none of them. We describe the use of fatty acids as qualitative and quantitative tracers for reconstructing animal diets in natural ecosystems. Next, we discuss both direct and indirect ecological implications of ω‐3 HUFA limitation at the individual, population, food web, and ecosystem scales, which include: changes in behavior, species composition, secondary production rates, trophic transfer efficiency and cross‐ecosystem subsidies. We finish by highlighting future research priorities including a need for more research on ω‐3 HUFAs in terrestrial systems, more research their importance for higher order consumers, and more research on the food web and ecosystem‐scale effects of ω‐3 HUFA limitation. Synthesis Mismatches between the supply of and demand for omega‐3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (ω‐3 HUFA) in natural ecosystems have the potential to result in resource limitation across a diverse array of ecosystems. We combined perspectives from ecology and nutritional science to develop a unified synthesis of ω‐3 HUFA ecology. We reviewed the importance of ω‐3 HUFAs for animals, the striking differences in ω‐3 HUFA availability at the base of terrestrial versus aquatic food webs, and the implications of ω‐3 HUFA limitation for food webs. We finished by highlighting research priorities in the field including more research on ω‐3 HUFAs in terrestrial systems, on higher order consumers, and at the food web and ecosystem‐scales.  相似文献

The highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) of the n-6 and n-3 series are involved in cell signalling in normal and transformed cells and have recently been associated with pathways leading to tumour cell death. The antitumour activity of three HUFA (arachidonic acid, gamma linolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid) were studied in glioma cells and tissue. Using five glioma models, including primary cell suspensions prepared from 46 human glioma samples and an in vivo rat C6 glioma model, we obtained evidence that, following exposure to HUFA, either administered into the medium surrounding human glioma cells or in 16 preparations of multicellular spheroids derived from human and rodent glioma cell lines (C6, MOG, U87, U373) or administered intra-tumourally by infusion using osmotic mini-pumps in 48 rats, glioma regression and apoptosis were detected. Additionally, synergy between gamma irradiation and HUFA administration was observed in 13 experiments analyzing C6 glioma cell apoptosis in vitro. These pro-apoptotic and antiproliferative activities were observed using both C18 and C20 fatty acids of the n-6 and n-3 series, but not when saturated and monounsaturated C18 and C20 fatty acid preparations were used. In the glioma infusion model, in addition to the apoptosis detected in glioma tissue infused with HUFA for 3-7 days, preservation of normal neural tissue and vasculature in adjacent brain was observed. Also, there was little evidence of acute inflammatory infiltration in regressing tumours. Our findings suggest that intraparenchymal infusion of HUFA may be effective in stimulating glioma regression.  相似文献

The intake of dietary fat above energy needs has contributed to the growing rates of obesity worldwide. The concept of disease development occurring in the fed state now has much support and dysregulation of substrate flux may occur due to poor handling of dietary fat in the immediate postprandial period. The present paper will review recent observations implicating cephalic phase events in the control of enterocyte lipid transport, the impact of varying the composition of meals on subsequent fat metabolism, and the means by which dietary lipid carried in chylomicrons can lead to elevated postprandial non-esterified fatty acid concentrations. This discussion is followed by an evaluation of the data on quantitative meal fat oxidation at the whole body level and an examination of dietary fat clearance to peripheral tissues - with particular attention paid to skeletal muscle and liver given the role of ectopic lipid deposition in insulin resistance. Estimates derived from data of dietary-TG clearance show good agreement with clearance to the liver equaling 8-12% of meal fat in lean subjects and this number appears higher (10-16%) in subjects with diabetes and fatty liver disease. Finally, we discuss new methods with which to study dietary fatty acid partitioning in vivo. Future research is needed to include a more comprehensive understanding of 1) the potential for differential oxidation of saturated versus unsaturated fatty acids which might lead to meaningful energy deficit and whether this parameter varies based on insulin sensitivity, 2) whether compartmentalization exists for diet-derived fatty acids within tissues vs. intracellular pools, and 3) the role of reduced peripheral fatty acid clearance in the development of fatty liver disease. Further advancements in the quantitation of dietary fat absorption and disposal will be central to the development of therapies designed to treat diet-induced obesity. Competition between the (n - 3) and (n - 6) types of highly unsaturated fatty acids can diminish the abundance of (n - 6) eicosanoid precursors in a tissue, which in turn can diminish the intensity of tissue responses that are mediated by (n - 6) eicosanoids. The mixture of 20- and 22-carbon highly unsaturated fatty acids maintained in the phospholipids of human plasma is related to the dietary intake of 18:2 (n - 6) and 18:3 (n - 3) by empirical hyperbolic equations in a manner very similar to the relationship reported for laboratory rats (Lands, W.E.M., Morris, A. and Libelt, B. (1990) Lipids 25, 505-516). Analytical results from volunteers ingesting self-selected diets showed an inter-individual variance for the proportion of (n - 6) eicosanoid precursors in the fatty acids of plasma phospholipids of about 5%, but the variance among multiple samples taken from the same individual throughout the day was less (about 3%), closer to the experimental variance of the analytical procedure (about 1%). The reproducibility of the results makes it likely that analysis of fatty-acid composition of plasma lipids from individuals will prove useful in estimating the diet-related tendency for severe thrombotic, arthritic or other disorders that are mediated by (n - 6) eicosanoids. Additional constants and terms were included in the equations to account for the effects of 20- and 22-carbon highly unsaturated (n - 3) fatty acids in the diet. A lower constant for the 20- and 22-carbon (n - 3) fatty acids compared to that for the 18-carbon (n - 3) fatty acid in decreasing the ability of dietary 18:2 (n - 6) to maintain 20:4 (n - 6) in tissue lipids confirmed the greater competitive effectiveness of the more highly unsaturated n - 3 fatty acids in the elongation/desaturation process. Also, a lower constant for direct incorporation of 20-carbon fatty acids of the n - 6 vs. the n - 3 type indicated a greater competitive effectiveness of 20:4 (n - 6) relative to 20:5 (n - 3) in reesterification after release from tissue lipids. The equations may be used in reverse to estimate the dietary intakes of the (n - 3) and (n - 6) fatty acids by using the composition of the fatty acids that had been maintained in plasma lipids.  相似文献

Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are promoted as beneficial in the prevention of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. In general, dietary omega 3 fatty acids are derived from plant sources as linolenic acid (LNA, C18:3 omega3) the precursor to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5 omega3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 omega3). However, it remains unclear if the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) LNA can provide the same health benefits as the very long chain highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) EPA and DHA generally derived from oily fish. In this study, mice were fed synthetic diets containing lard (low in PUFA and HUFA), canola oil (to supply PUFA), or a mixture of menhaden and arasco (fish and fungal) oils (to supply HUFA) for 8 weeks. The diets were neither high in calories nor fat, which was supplied at 6%. The lard and canola oil diets resulted in high levels of hepatic triglycerides and cholesterol and elevation of lipogenic gene expression. By comparison livers from mice fed the fish/fungal oil diet had low levels of lipid accumulation and more closely resembled livers from mice fed standard laboratory chow. SREBP1c and PPARgamma gene and protein expression were high in livers of animals fed diets containing lard or canola oil compared with fish/fungal oil. Hepatic fatty acid analyses indicated that dietary PUFA were efficiently converted to HUFA regardless of source. Therefore, differences in hepatic lipid levels and gene expression between dietary groups were due to exogenous fatty acid supplied rather than endogenous pools. These results have important implications for understanding the regulation of hepatic lipogenesis by dietary fatty acids.  相似文献

Juvenile soft-shelled turtles (Pelodiscus sinensis) were fed 7 diets containing 8% of lard, soybean oil, olive oil, menhaden fish oil, or mixtures of 1 to 1 ratio of fish oil and lard, soybean oil, olive oil for 10 weeks. Growth and muscle proximate compositions of the turtles were not affected by different dietary treatments (p>0.05). Fatty acid profiles in muscle polar lipids, muscle non-polar lipids, and liver polar lipids reflected the fatty acid composition of dietary lipid source. Turtles fed diets containing fish oil generally contained significantly higher (p<0.05) proportion of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) in both polar and non-polar lipids of muscle and polar fraction of liver lipids than those fed other oils. Non-polar fraction of liver lipids from all groups of turtles contained less than 1% of HUFA. All turtles contained relatively high proportions of oleic acid in their lipids regardless of the dietary lipid source. Further, lipid peroxidation in both muscle tissue and liver microsomes of turtles fed fish oil as the sole lipid source was greater (p<0.05) than those fed fish oil-free diets. Turtles fed olive oil as the sole lipid source had the lowest lipid peroxidation rate among all dietary groups. The results indicate that dietary n-3 HUFA may not be crucial for optimal growth of soft-shelled turtles although they may be used for metabolic purpose. Further, high level of dietary HUFA not only increases the HUFA content in turtle tissues, but also enhances the susceptibility of these tissues to lipid peroxidation.  相似文献

Changing the dietary ratio of the essential fatty acids (EFA), 18:2n6 and 18:3n3, while keeping the amounts of other fatty acids in the diet constant can rapidly and specifically alter the proportions of n6 and n3 22-carbon fatty acids in the brain of the weanling rat. A dietary 18:2n6/18:3n3 ratio of 165 versus 1.8 caused higher n6 and lower n3 22-carbon fatty acid levels, without changing total 22-carbon fatty acid levels, in phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine from several neural membrane fractions. This was apparent after only 2 weeks and showed no sign of plateauing after 12 weeks. Other neural fatty acids were essentially unaffected. The three most abundant 22-carbon fatty acids responded somewhat differently to increments in the dietary 18:2n6/18:3n3 ratio (1.8, 9, 36, and 165). Levels of 22:4n6 increased by similar absolute amounts for each four-fold increase in dietary 18:2n6/18:3n3 ratio; in contrast, the largest absolute changes in 22:5n6 and 22:6n3 levels occurred as the 18:2n6/18:3n3 ratio increased from 36 to 165. This study shows that the 18:2n6/18:3n3 ratio of diets high in fat (40% of energy) and adequate in EFA, both typical of diets in developed countries, can substantially and relatively quickly affect the 22-carbon fatty acids in the brain, even after the rapid accumulation of these fatty acids during neural growth has ceased.  相似文献

Although elevated levels of cholesterol are associated with increased risks of coronary and peripheral vascular disease, the association frequently fails to provide a causative explanation at the individual level. New hypotheses are required which, whether or not they are correct, will provide new lines of research. It is proposed here that the causes of vascular disease are abnormal membrane phospholipid concentrations of the 20-carbon and 22-carbon essential fatty acids (EFAs) of the n-6 and n-3 series. These levels become abnormal with ageing, with stress and in response to smoking, high cholesterol levels and high saturated fat intakes. They are also abnormal in patients with diabetes and hypertension. The effects of these EFAs and their metabolites include lowering of triglycerides, elevation of high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, reduction of blood pressure, vasodilatation, reduction of fibrinogen levels and inhibition of platelet aggregation and of cardiac arrhythmias. Prospective studies have shown that abnormal levels of these fatty acids are predictive of future coronary death. Controlled trials of treatment have demonstrated that provision of the fatty acids reduces both coronary and total mortality. Further experimental and clinical investigations of the roles of appropriate membrane concentrations of these fatty acids are justified.  相似文献

Growth rate and assimilation of essential fatty acids were analysed in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) fed different diets. Gas Chromatographie analyses of total lipids in commercial diets indicated excessive presence of saturated, mono and dienoic fatty acids, while the content of to 3 HUFA was very low. Fatty acid patterns of liver and white muscle farmed sea bass reflected the contents of the dietary lipids. The concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly ω3 HUFA was significantly lower when compared with samples from the wild population. The atherogenic and fish lipid quality indices confirmed the higher nutritional quality of wild sea bass when compared with farmed fishes.  相似文献

The role of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in the regulation of bone remodeling is well established. There is increasing evidence that various long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs), as well as nonprostanoid LCPUFA metabolites, also have critical roles in regulating bone metabolism and may have therapeutic potential in the management of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Although only the 18-carbon precursors for the n-3 and n-6 LCPUFAs are deemed "dietary essential," the ability of the body to convert these precursor fatty acids into the more highly unsaturated 20- and 22-carbon LCPUFAs decreases with aging, menopause, and various lifestyle factors (e.g., smoking). Increasing dietary LCPUFA intake increases tissue and blood LCPUFA concentrations, as well as the concentrations of their metabolites. Modification of dietary LCPUFA content, particularly increasing the intake of n-3 LCPUFAs, has been shown to minimize the decline in bone mass caused by menopause in women and ovariectomy in animal models. This review summarizes findings from both in vivo and in vitro studies and outlines the effects of LCPUFAs and their metabolites on calcium balance, osteoblastogenesis, osteoclastogenesis, and osteoblast and osteoclast function.  相似文献

Shock and multiple organ failure remain primary causes of late-stage morbidity and mortality in victims of trauma. During shock, the intestine is subject to extensive cell death and is the source of inflammatory factors that cause multiorgan failure. We (34) showed previously that ischemic, but not nonischemic, small intestines and pancreatic protease digested homogenates of normal small intestine can generate cytotoxic factors capable of killing naive cells within minutes. Using chloroform/methanol separation of rat small intestine homogenates into lipid fractions and aqueous and sedimented protein fractions and measuring cell death caused by those fractions, we found that the cytotoxic factors are lipid in nature. Recombining the lipid fraction with protein fractions prevented cell death, except when homogenates were protease digested. Using a fluorescent substrate, we found high levels of lipase activity in intestinal homogenates and cytotoxic levels of free fatty acids. Addition of albumin, a lipid binding protein, prevented cell death, unless the albumin was previously digested with protease. Homogenization of intestinal wall in the presence of the lipase inhibitor orlistat prevented cell death after protease digestion. In vivo, orlistat plus the protease inhibitor aprotinin, administered to the intestinal lumen, significantly improved survival time compared with saline in a splanchnic arterial occlusion model of shock. These results indicate that major cytotoxic mediators derived from an intestine under in vitro conditions are free fatty acids. Breakdown of free fatty acid binding proteins by proteases causes release of free fatty acids to act as powerful cytotoxic mediators.  相似文献

This paper reviews evidence that the fatty acid composition of dietary lipids influences the respiratory and cardiovascular physiology of Adriatic sturgeon {Acipenser naccarii) and, thereby, their tolerance of the stress of hypoxia. Sturgeon fed a commercial diet enriched in fish oil (menhaden oil as 15% of dry feed weight), with an elevated content of highly unsaturated fatty acids of the co3 series (ω3 HUFA), had a significantly lower standard metabolic rate (SMR) and routine oxygen consumption (Mo2) than those fed a diet enriched with the same quantity of hydrogenated coconut oil, with an elevated content of saturated fatty acids (SFA). Both groups grew equally well. As a result of this difference in aerobic metabolism, sturgeon fed the w3 HUFA and SFA responded differently when exposed to hypoxic challenges. Sturgeon fed w3 HUFA exhibited no significant reflex hyperventilation when exposed to mild, moderate or deep hypoxia (30 min at water 02 partial pressures of 10.8, 6.6 and 4.6 kPa, respectively), no hypoxic depression of spontaneous activity during 3h in mild hypoxia, and no depression of Mo2 during 3h in moderate hypoxia, unlike sturgeon fed SFA. The diets also influenced the performance of isolated hearts in vitro. Hearts from fish fed o3 HUFA maintained maximum in vitro cardiac power output unchanged when oxygen supply was reduced (O2 content from 2.3 to 0.7 vol.%), unlike hearts from sturgeon fed SFA. Overall, the results indicate that dietary fatty acid composition can influence tolerance of hypoxia in sturgeon, through effects on SMR. When compared to sturgeon fed SFA, those fed co3 HUFA had lower SMR and were more tolerant of hypoxia, with effects both on the whole animal and on the isolated heart.  相似文献

Repeated critical swimming performance trials (Ucrit) were performed on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to test the null hypothesis that the source of dietary lipids (fish-based, poultry-based, and plant-based) does not influence exercise and recovery performance. Four diets were prepared by extensively replacing supplemental lipid from anchovy oil (AO; 100% AO at 150 g/kg) with cold pressed flaxseed oil (FO; 25% AO, 75% FO), sunflower oil (SO; 25% AO, 75% SO), or poultry fat (PF; 25% AO, 75% PF). These diets had equivalent protein and energy concentrations, but due to the different supplemental lipid sources, varied widely in their fatty acid composition. Fish fed AO had a significantly higher (P<0.05) first Ucrit (2.62+/-0.07 body lenght s(-1)) than those fed PF (2.22+/-0.12 body lenght s(-1)) that had low muscle ratios of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) to saturated fatty acids (SFA) and arachidonic acid (AA), and high levels of oleic acid. Fish in the FO and SO diet groups swam as well as AO-fed fish in both swimming trials. The performance of fish fed AO decreased significantly (P<0.05) during the second swimming trial (i.e. Ucrit2/Ucrit1=0.92+/-0.02). No significant differences occurred between diet groups for the second swim trial. There was a positive correlation between both n-3 HUFA/SFA and n-3 HUFA/AA ratios, and Ucrit1. A negative correlation was found between dietary AA and oleic acids, and Ucrit1. The present study suggests that low dietary n-3 HUFA/ SFA and n-3 HUFA/AA ratios may negatively affect swimming performance. The former possibly can be offset by increasing linoleic acid in the presence of nutritionally adequate n-3 HUFA (e.g. SO diet). Lipid supplements consisting largely of vegetable oils did not compromise fish cardiorespiratory physiology under the conditions of this study.  相似文献

Desaturase and elongase are two key enzyme categories in the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCPUFA) pathway that convert dietary α-linolenic acid (18:3n-3) to docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3). The Δ6 desaturase is considered as rate limiting in the conversion. In a previous study in barramundi we demonstrated that the desaturase had a low Δ6 activity but noted that the enzyme also possessed Δ8 ability that utilised 20-carbon fatty acids. This observation suggests that an alternative pathway may exist in the barramundi via elongases to form 20-carbon metabolites from 18:3n-3 to 20:3n-3 and then Δ6/8 desaturase to 20:4n-3. Cloning of the barramundi elongation of very long-chain fatty acid gene (ELOVL) and heterologous expression of the corresponding elongase were performed to examine activity with regard to time course, substrate concentration and substrate preference. Results revealed that the barramundi elongase showed a broad range of substrate specificity including 18-carbon PUFA (including 18:3n-3 and 18:2n-6), 20- and 22-carbon LCPUFA, with greater activity towards omega-3 (n-3) than n-6 fatty acids. The findings from this study provide molecular evidence for an alternative n-3 fatty acid elongation pathway utilising 18:3n-3 in barramundi.  相似文献
