Impacts of solar radiation, humic substances and nutrients on phytoplankton abundance at different depths were investigated in a temperate dimictic lake, Lake Solumsjö. Penetration of solar radiation profiles at different depths, represented as light attenuation coefficient (K d) were examined. Water sampling and downward irradiance of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), ultraviolet-A (UV-A, 320–400 nm) and ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280–320 nm) radiation were performed once a week and at three different times of the day (08.00, 12.00 and 16.00 hrs, local time) between September 13 and November 1, 1999. During the period of investigation, solar radiation above the water surface declined from 474 to 94 mol m–2 s–1 for PAR, from 1380 to 3.57 W m–2 for UV-A and from 13.1 to 0.026 W m–2 for UV-B, respectively. The attenuation coefficient (K d) for UV-B radiation ranged from 3.7 to 31 m–1 and UV-B radiation could not be detected at depths greater than 0.25 m. Humic substances measured at 440 nm ranged from 35.5 to 57.7 Pt mg l–1. Mean values of biomass, estimated from chlorophyll a, in the whole water column (0–10 m) varied between 2.3 and 5.6 g l–1 and a diel fluctuation was observed. During stratified conditions, high levels of iron (1.36 mg l–1) and manganese (4.32 mg l–1) were recorded in the hypolimnion, suggesting that the thermocline played a major role in the vertical distribution of phytoplankton communities in Lake Solumsjö. The high levels of iron and manganese stimulated the growth of Trachelomonas volvocinopsis in the hypolimnion at a depth of 10 m. Negative impacts of UV-B radiation on phytoplankton in lake Solumsjö are reduced due to the high levels of humic substances and the high degree of solar zenith angle at the latitude studied.  相似文献

Bacterioplankton abundance and production were followed during one decade (1991–2001) in the hypertrophic and steeply stratified small Lake Verevi (Estonia). The lake is generally dimictic. However, a partly meromictic status could be formed in specific meteorological conditions as occurred in springs of 2000 and 2001. The abundance of bacteria in Lake Verevi is highly variable (0.70 to 22 × 106 cells ml−1) and generally the highest in anoxic hypolimnetic water. In 2000–2001, the bacterial abundance in the hypolimnion increased probably due to meromixis. During a productive season, heterotrophic bacteria were able to consume about 10–40% of primary production in the epilimnion. Our study showed that bacterioplankton in the epilimnion was top-down controlled by predators, while in metalimnion bacteria were dependent on energy and carbon sources (bottom-up regulated). Below the thermocline hypolimnetic bacteria mineralized organic matter what led to the depletion of oxygen and created anoxic hypolimnion where rich mineral nutrient and sulphide concentrations coexisted with high bacterial numbers.  相似文献

Ham's Lake was destratified in the summers of 1977 and 1978 by pumping surface water to the bottom. However, an arm was prevented from mixing by a submerged dam of a former farm pond and remained stratified. The concentration of manganese in the water increased to over 5 000 µg 1–1 in the hypolimnion of the anoxic arm in summer. Soluble manganese averaged 28% of total concentration. Total iron concentrations were relatively high in the water and sorbed iron values were extremely low in the sediments. Soluble iron averaged 12% of total concentration. Zinc values were low in the water and sediments. Chaoborus punctipennis and Chironomus riparius concentrated iron and zinc and discriminated against manganese. Concentration factors were unaffected by mixing.  相似文献

Peak pore water SRP and iron(II) concentrations were found during summer in surface sediments in the shallow and eutrophic L. Finjasjön, Sweden, and the concentrations generally increased with water depth. The SRP variation in surface sediments (0–2 cm) was correlated with temperature (R2 = 0.82–0.95) and iron(II) showed a correlation with sedimentary carbon on all sites (R2 = 0.42–0.96). In addition, sedimentary Chla, bacterial abundances and production rates in surface sediments (0–2 cm) varied seasonally, with peaks during spring and fall sedimentation. Bacterial production rates were correlated with phosphorus and carbon in the sediment (R2 = 0.90–0.95 and R2 = 0.31–0.95, respectively), indicating a coupling with algal sedimentation. A general increase in sediment Chla and bacterial abundances towards sediments at greater water depth was found. Further, data from 1988–90 reveal that TP and TFe concentrations in the lake were significantly correlated during summer (R2 = 0.81 and 0.76, in the hypolimnion and epilimnion, respectively). The results indicate that the increase in pore water SRP and Fe(II) in surface sediments during summer is regulated by bacterial activity and the input of organic matter. In addition, spatial and temporal variations in pore water composition are mainly influenced by temperature and water depth and the significant correlation between TP and TFe in the water suggests a coupled release from the sediment. These findings support the theory of anoxic microlayer formation at the sediment-water interface.  相似文献

Nitrogen Dynamics in the Steeply Stratified,Temperate Lake Verevi,Estonia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The dynamics of different nitrogen compounds and nitrification in diverse habitats of a stratified Lake Verevi (Estonia) was investigated in 2000–2001. Also planktonic N2-fixation (N2fix) was measured in August of the observed years. The nitrogen that accumulated in the hypolimnion was trapped in the non-mixed layer during most of the vegetation period causing a concentration of an order of magnitude higher than in the epilimnion. The ammonium level remained low in the epilimnion (maximum 577 mgN m−3, average 115 mgN m−3) in spite of high concentrations in the hypolimnion (maximum 12223 mgN m−3, average 4807 mgN m−3). The concentrations of NO2 and NO3 remained on a low level both in the epilimnion (average 0.94 and 9.09 mgN m−3, respectively) and hypolimnion (average 0.47 and 5.05 mgN m−3, respectively). N2fix and nitrification ranged from 0.30 to 2.80 mgN m−3 day−1 and 6.0 to 107 mgN m−3 day−1, respectively; the most intensive processes occurred in 07.08.00 at depths of 2 and 5 m, accordingly. The role of N2fix in the total nitrogen budget of Lake Verevi (in August 2000 and 2001) was negligible while episodically in the nitrogen-depleted epilimnion the N2fix could substantially contribute to the pool of mineral nitrogen. Nitrification was unable to influence nitrogen dynamics in the epilimnion while some temporary coupling with ammonium dynamics in the hypolimnion was documented.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of planktonic ciliates in eight strongly stratified temperate lakes was studied in summer 1998. Ciliate abundance and biomass were highest (mean 39.9 cells ml–1 and 181.9 g C l–1) in the epi-, and lowest (mean 8.2 cells ml–1 and 97.6 g C l–1) in the hypolimnion. The community of ciliates was dominated by five orders: Oligotrichida, Haptorida, Prostomatida, Scuticociliatida and Peritrichida. The community composition varied greatly with depth. In the epilimnion, the ciliate numbers were dominated by oligotrichs but small algivorous prostomatids, peritrichs and haptorids were also numerous. In the metalimnion, these groups were replaced by scuticociliates and mixotrophic prostomatids. In the hypolimnion species known as benthic migrants appeared. We found a positive significant correlation (p < 0.05) between ciliate numbers and Chl a and bacterial densities. Only in the hypolimnion, the correlation between ciliates numbers and Chl a was not significant.  相似文献

The abundance of Gloeotrichia echinulata colonies in the sediments of Lake Erken and their phosphorus content were investigated to determine the contribution of Gloeotrichia colonies to total sediment phosphorus. Moreover, the potential size of the algal inoculum and the migration to the water during summer were estimated.The surplus phosphorus content of the resting colonies in the sediment was about 45% of total phosphorus, which maximized at 8.5 µg P (mg dw)–1 or 81 ng P colony–1. The C:P ratio (by weight) in the early colonies appearing in the lake water was 50:1, while the ratio stabilized at 150 during the major migration period. The internal supply of surplus phosphorus was used during the pelagic growth of the colonies.The internal phosphorus loading to the epilimnion of Lake Erken due to Gloeotrichia migration could, from the measurements of the increase in particulate epilimnetic phosphorus, be estimated at 40 mg P m –2 or 2.5 mg P m–2 d–1 in late July and early August. Determination of the number of colonies in the sediment before and during the migration verified this value to be a conservative estimate of the internal phosphorus loading due to Gloeotrichia migration to the epilimnion in Lake Erken.The sediment P content calculated from the P concentration in early epilimnion colonies resulted in a value of 35 µg P (g dw)–1 as a maximum. This corresponds to only 3% of the total phosphorus content in Lake Erken sediment.  相似文献

Summary The growth parameters ofPenicillium cyclopium have been evaluated in a continuous culture system for the production of fungal protein from whey. Dilution rates varied from 0.05 to 0.20 h–1 under constant conditions of temperature (28°C) and pH (3.5). The saturation coefficients in the Monod equation were 0.74 g l–1 for lactose and 0.14 mg l–1 for oxygen, respectively. For a wide range of dilution rates, the yield was 0.68 g g–1 biomass per lactose and the maintenance coefficient 0.005 g g–1 h–1 lactose per biomass, respectively. The maximum biomass productivity achieved was 2 g l–1 h–1 biomass at dilution rates of 0.16–0.17 h–1 with a lactose concentration of 20 g l–1 in the feed. Walker Lake (area = 140 km2, Z mean = 19.3 m) is a large, terminal lake in western Nevada. As a result of anthropogenic desiccation, the lake has decreased in volume by 75% since the 1880s. The hypolimnion of the lake, now too small to meet the oxygen demand exerted by decaying matter, rapidly goes anoxic after thermal stratification. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to examine the feasibility of using oxygenation to avoid hypolimnetic anoxia and subsequent accumulation of ammonia in the hypolimnion, and to estimate the required DO capacity of an oxygenation system for the lake. The accumulation of inorganic nitrogen in water overlaying sediment was measured in laboratory chambers under various DO levels. Rates of ammonia accumulation ranged from 16.8 to 23.5 mg-N m–2 d–1 in chambers with 0, 2.5 and 4.8 mg L–1 DO, and ammonia release was not significantly different between treatments. Beggiatoa sp. on the sediment surface of the moderately aerated chambers (2.5 and 4.8 mg L–1 DO) indicated that oxygen penetration into sediment was minimal. In contrast, ammonia accumulation was reversed in chambers with 10 mg L–1 DO, where oxygen penetration into sediment stimulated nitrification and denitrification. Ammonia accumulation in anoxic chambers (18.1 and 20.6 mg-N m–2 d–1) was similar to ammonia accumulation in the hypolimnion from July through September of 1998 (16.5 mg-N m–2 d–1). Areal hypolimnetic oxygen demand averaged 1.2 g O2 m–2 d–1 for 1994–1996 and 1998. Sediment oxygen demand (SOD) determined in experimental chambers averaged approximately 0.14 g O2 m–2 d–1. Continuous water currents at the sediment-water interface of 5–6 cm s–1 resulted in a substantial increase in SOD (0.38 g O2 m–2 d–1). The recommended oxygen delivery capacity of an oxygenation system, taking into account increased SOD due to mixing in the hypolimnion after system start-up, is 215 Mg d–1. Experimental results suggest that the system should maintain high levels of DO at the sediment-water interface (10 mg L–1) to insure adequate oxygen penetration into the sediments, and a subsequent inhibition of ammonia accumulation in the hypolimnion of the lake.  相似文献

The surface level of Lake Kinneret is regulated to remain between –209 m and –213 m msl. During the stratified period, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), ammonium (NH inf4 sup+ ) and dissolved sulphide (H2S) accumulate in the hypolimnion. The concentration of these solutes, which are direct and indirect products of the decomposition of organic matter, increase considerably in summers with lower lake levels. A numerical model describing depth-averaged hypolimnion and epilimnion current velocities for high and low lake levels was adapted for Lake Kinneret. Simulated hypolimnetic currents were shown to be stronger for low lake levels as a result of the fact that low lake levels are characterized by a thinner hypolimnion while the thickness of the epilimnion remains unchanged. We suggest that the stronger hypolimnetic currents have the following consequences: 1. turbulence is induced, 2. the enhanced turbulence results in higher resuspension, 3. because SO4= is available to bacteria on resuspended particles, mineralization rates are enhanced, and 4. focusing of fine sediments and associated organic matter to the pelagic zone is enhanced.  相似文献

Seasonal population dynamics and the vertical distribution of planktonic ciliates in a hypertrophic and strongly stratified temperate lake were studied from April to October in 2000 and from April to June in 2001. In the epi- and metalimnion the ciliate abundance peaked in spring and late summer, reaching maximum values in the metalimnion (86 cells ml−1) on 7th August 2000. In the epilimnion, the highest biomass content (414 μg C l−1) was observed on 8th May 2000. In the hypolimnion only a late summer peak occurred and the ciliate numbers were always lower than in the epi- and metalimnion. Five groups dominated the community of ciliates: Oligotrichida, Gymnostomatea, Prostomatida, Hymenostomata and Peritrichia, and the community composition varied greatly with depth. In the epilimnion the ciliate numbers were dominated by oligotrichs but small algivorous prostomatids, peritrichs and gymnostomes were also numerous. In the metalimnion these groups were gradually replaced by scuticociliates and mixotrophic Coleps spp. In the hypolimnion scuticociliates and species known as benthic migrants dominated. In the epilimnion and upper metalimnion in spring large herbivores and in summer small bacterivores were more numerous.  相似文献

Individuals of the fairy shrimp, Branchinecta longiantenna, were subjected to 5 concentrations (0.1 to 15 mg l–1) of Pb in diluted habitat water at 13 °C. Lead concentrations (mg kg–1 wet weight) in the animals were determined at 2-day intervals by digestion in nitric acid followed by atomic absorption analysis. The shrimp were also subjected to 0.1 mg l–1 media of Cd and Zn, separately.Uptake rates by the fairy shrimp for the three metal ions at 0.1 mg l–1 were: 0.111, 0.0885, and 0.0460 mg kg–1 day–1 for Zn, Pb, and Cd, respectively. After 2 days in 1.0 mg l–1 Cd or Zn, the animals expired; but they surviced for 8 days in a 10 mg l–1 Pb medium and for 2 days in 25 mg l–1 Pb. Lead uptake demonstrated a linear dependence on the Pb concentration in the media.Shrimp survived at much higher tissue accumulations of Pb compared to Zn and Cd. Estimated lethal doses were 20, 1.2–2.4, and 0.4–1.4 mg kg–1 wet weight for Pb, Zn, and Cd, respectively. Pb was found to be at much lower concentration than Cd or Zn in the natural pond water but between Cd and Zn levels in the sediment. The small strongly stratified hard-water hypertrophic lake Verevi (max. depth 11.0 m, surface area 12.6 ha, mean depth 3.6 m) was investigated in 2000 and in 2001. The lake is sheltered from winds, and the role of waves in mixing the water column is minimal. Eutrophication favours the strengthening of stratification. Early warm springs cause a fast stagnation of the water column forming partly meromictic conditions. Seston content of water and in sediment traps in 3 layers was measured several times during the formation of stratification. Besides measuring particulate matter, in 2001, the nutrient content of the trapped sediment was analysed. During the first 7 days of the investigation, 30% of the total particle sedimentation took place. The sedimentation rate of particulate matter was 0.4–6.3 g m–2 d−1 dry weight in different layers of the water column. Daily average sedimentation loss rate was 27% of the total amount of seston of the epilimnion, whilst from the meta- and hypolimnion the settling was much slower (9.6 and 7.3%, respectively). In our experiments with twin sediment traps, to one of which formaldehyde was added, the PO43−-P concentration was 19% smaller in the trap without formaldehyde, probably due to planktonic uptake. The relationship between primary and export production is loop-like. The shape was irregular, indicating a high grazing rate of zooplankton.  相似文献

A sediment sample with high organic matter and trace metal content was suspended in synthetic river water for four weeks under an inert gas atmosphere. Subsequently, the anaerobic suspension was reoxidized by bubbling air through it. The concentrations of dissolved oxygen, sulfide, ferrous iron, manganese, cadmium, cobalt and the pH-value were measured at close time intervals during the anaerobic incubation. The anaerobic suspension was a post-oxic or sub-oxic environment with oxygen and total sulfide concentrations less than 1 µmole 1–1. Concentrations of dissolved ferrous iron and manganese were 50–150 µmole 1–1 and 5–30 µmole 1–1, respectively. The total sulfide concentration was measured using a sensitive voltammetric technique, with a detection limit of 1 nmole 1–1. A sequential extraction procedure was applied to two sediment samples taken at the end of the anaerobic incubation and after one week of reoxidation. The extractions indicated that cadmium was bound in sulfide minerals under post-oxic conditions. Thermodynamic equilibrium calculations revealed that the concentrations of dissolved cobalt in the post-oxic suspension were limited by the precipitation of cobalt sulfide minerals.  相似文献

Chlorella sorokiniana was cultured in heterotrophic or mixotrophic mode in outdoor enclosed tubular photobioreactor. The culture temperature was maintained at 32–35 °C. At night, theChlorella culture grew heterotrophically, and 0.1 M glucose was completely consumed. The biomass growth yield of glucose was 0.35 ± 0.001 g-biomass g-glucose–1. During the day, the algal culture grew mixotrophically and the biomass growth yield was 0.49 g-biomass g-glucose–1 in low density culture (initial biomass concentration, Xo = 2 g l–1), 0.56 g-biomass g-glucose–1 in medium density culture (Xo = 4 g l–1) and 0.46 g-biomass g-glucose–1 in high density culture (Xo = 7 g l–1). The daily area productivity of the culture, with Xo = 4 g l–1 corresponded to 127 g-biomass m–2 d–1 during the day and 79 g-biomass m–2 d–1 during the night. In all the cultures, the dissolved O2 concentration increased in the morning, reached the maximum value at noon, and then decreased in the afternoon. The dissolved CO2 concentration remained at 3 mBar in the morning and increased in the afternoon. Glycolate was not found to accumulate in culture medium.  相似文献

Groundwater is a major influence on the hydrological, chemical and thermal regime of chalk streams in the southern U.K. However, little is currently known about the nature of the sediment delivery system within these chalk stream systems, even though sediment-related problems have been increasingly cited as a cause of habitat degradation and of declining salmonid stocks. To address this knowledge gap, suspended sediment fluxes were monitored at 4 sites within the Hampshire Avon catchment between February 1999 and August 2000. Maximum suspended sediment concentrations ranged from nearly 45 mg l–1 to 260 mg l–1. Over the study period, annual suspended sediment loads ranged from 644 to 6215 t yr–1 and annual specific sediment yields ranged from 1.4 to 12.5 t km–2 yr–1. The results show that, relative to other U.K. rivers, the study chalk streams are characterised by low suspended sediment concentrations and loads and less episodic behaviour.  相似文献

The manganese pathways in Lac Léman have been investigated on the basis of chemical analyses undertaken on water, suspended solids, bottom sediments and interstitial water samples. The various modes of occurrence of Mn have been determined by means of visual examination using SEM and TEM (scanning and transmission electron microscopy), by microanalysis (EDAX) of various sediment fractions, by chemical analysis of the dissolved phase, and by chemical speciation and XRD of bottom sediments. Fluxes to and from the sediment have also been computed. The time-depth variations of Mn in the water column are characterized by (a) a very steep gradient of Mn sol. from the sediment interstitial water (15 mg l−1) to the overlying water, 2 m above the bottom(500 μg l−1), (b) an accumulation of Mn part. between 280 m and the interface at 310 m, consisting of mineralized colonies ofMetallogenium. The abundance ofMetallogenium colonies is inversely related to O2 concentration; the optimal value for the bacterium Mn fixation is around 1 mg l−1. Because of the quasi-anoxic state of the bottom sediments and overlying water, Mn diffuses from a ‘source layer’, 2–5 cm below the interface (a) upwards across the interface, before being taken up byMetallogenium, and (b) downwards to a ‘sink layer’, in which large amounts of Mn-carbonate precipitate. Particulate Mn sedimentation rates measured in traps show that downwards Mn flux due toMetallogenium settling approximately balances the upwards soluble flux due to diffusion. Quantitatively, the process of Mn cycling in Lac Léman is, therefore, limited to the lowermost part of the hypolimnion. Although Zn and Cd seem to follow the same cycle as Mn, Fe behaves in a different manner; it was not taken up byMetallogenium at the time of our study.  相似文献

Primary Production of Phytoplankton in a Strongly Stratified Temperate Lake   总被引:7,自引:7,他引:0  
Lake Verevi (12.6 ha, maximum depth 11.0 m, mean depth 3.6 m) is a strongly eutrophic and stratified lake. Planktothrix agardhii is the most characteristic phytoplankton species in summer and autumn, while photosynthesizing sulphur bacteria can occur massively in the metalimnion. Primary production (PP) and chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) were seasonally studied in 1991, 1993, 2000, and 2001. Vertical distribution of PP was rather complex, having usually two peaks, one at or near the surface (0–1 m), and another deeper (at 3–7 m) in the metalimnion. The values of dark fixation of CO2 in the metalimnion were in most cases higher than those in the upper water layer. Considering the average daily PP 896 mg C m−2 and yearly PP 162 mg C m−2, Secchi depth 2.34 m, and epilimnetic concentrations of chlorophyll a (19.6 mg m−3), total nitrogen and total phosphorus (TP, 52 mg m−3) in 2000, L. Verevi is a eutrophic lake of a ‘good’ status. Considering the total amounts of nutrients stored in the hypolimnion, the average potential concentrations in the whole water column could achieve 1885 mg m−3 of TN and 170 mg m−3 of TP reflecting hypertrophic conditions and a ‚bad’ status. Improvement of the epilimnetic water quality from the 1990s to the 2000s may have resulted from incomplete spring mixing and might not reflect the real improvement. A decreased nutrient concentration in the epilimnion has supported the establishment of a ‘clear epilimnion state’ allowing light to penetrate into the nutrient-rich metalimnion and sustaining a high production of cyanobacteria and phototrophic sulphur bacteria.  相似文献

Wind-induced sediment resuspension occurs frequently in the shallow and eutrophic Lake Arresø, Denmark. The impact of resuspension on internal phosphorus loading was investigated by laboratory experiments studying P-release from the undisturbed sediment surface and by experiments simulating resuspension events.Phosphorus release from undisturbed sediment sampled in May and August was 12 mg and 4 mg m–2 d–1, respectively. During experimental simulation of resuspension, soluble reactive phosphate (SRP) increased by 20–80 µg l–1, which indicates that a typical resuspension event in the lake would be accompanied by the release of 150 mg SRP m–2. The internal P loading induced by resuspension is estimated to be 60–70 mg m–2 d–1, or 20–30 times greater than the release from undisturbed sediment.SRP release during simulation of resuspension was mainly dependent on the equilibrium conditions in the water column and was basically independent of the increase in suspended solids and the duration of resuspension. A second simulation of resuspension conducted 26 hours later, did not result in any further release of SRP from sediment sampled in May. In contrast, there was an additional SRP release from sediment sampled in August, indicating that an exchangable P pool, capable of altering equilibrium conditions, is built up between resuspension events.It is concluded that resuspension, by increasing the P flux between sediment and water, plays a major role in the maintenance of the high nutrient level in Lake Arresø. A relatively high release rate is maintained during resuspension because of the low Fe:P ratio and the high concentration of NH4Cl-extractable P in the sediment.  相似文献

The trophic status and water quality of Lake Tilitso (4920 m above sea level) in a high altitude region in central Nepal were surveyed in September, 1984. The lake is rather large with a maximum depth of 95 m and a surface area of 10.2 km2. The lake water was turbid due to glacier silt and the euphotic layer was only 5 m deep. The nutrient concentration was very low with total phosphorus concentration 1–6 μg l−1, and DTN concentration 0.10–0.22 mg l−1. The phytoplankton biomass and chlorophyll-a concentration were also low. Primary production was estimated to be about 12 mg C m−2 d−1. The concentrations of particulate matter and most cations and bacterial number were higher in the epilimnion than in the hypolimnion. The trophic status of this lake was estimated as ultraoligotrophic.  相似文献
