The association between sleepwalking, a non-rapid-eye-movement parasomnia, and biological rhythms has not been subject of research in the past, although shift work is a known risk factor of the disorder. We present the case of a 36-year-old policeman who suffered for years from sleepwalking and was referred to the hospital for polysomnography. All standard investigations including multiple sleep latency or maintenance wakeful test were normal. On the contrary, chronobiological assessment revealed phase delay of vital functions and body temperature, whereas acrophases of melatonin and cortisol remained stable. We postulate an increase in sleep fragmentation due to shift work, but further research is needed to substantiate the hypothesis.  相似文献

The diazotrophic unicellular cyanobacterium Cyanothece sp. ATCC 51142 demonstrates circadian patterns in nitrogenase activity, H2 production and glycogen storage when grown under nitrogen‐fixing, 12:12 light:dark (L:D) conditions. In this study, we grew Cyanothece sp. ATCC 51142, and another strain in this genus, Cyanothece sp. PCC 7822, under long‐day (16:8 L:D) and short‐day (8:16 L:D) nitrogen‐fixing conditions to determine if they continued to display circadian rhythms. Both strains demonstrated similar circadian patterns for all three metabolic parameters when grown under long‐day conditions. However, the strains responded differently to short‐day growth conditions. Cyanothece sp. ATCC 51142 retained reasonable circadian patterns under 8:16 L:D conditions, whereas Cyanothece sp. PCC 7822 had quite damped patterns without a clear circadian pattern. In particular, glycogen storage changed very little throughout the day and we ascribe this to the difference in the type of glycogen granules in Cyanothece sp. PCC 7822 which has small β‐granules, compared to the large, starch‐like granules in Cyanothece sp. ATCC 51142. The results suggested that both mechanistic and regulatory processes play a role in establishing the basis for these metabolic oscillations.  相似文献

* As iron (Fe) deficiency is a main limiting factor of ocean productivity, its effects were investigated on interactions between photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation in the marine nonheterocystous diazotrophic cyanobacterium Trichodesmium IMS101. * Biophysical methods such as fluorescence kinetic microscopy, fast repetition rate (FRR) fluorimetry, and in vivo and in vitro spectroscopy of pigment composition were used, and nitrogenase activity and the abundance of key proteins were measured. * Fe limitation caused a fast down-regulation of nitrogenase activity and protein levels. By contrast, the abundance of Fe-requiring photosystem I (PSI) components remained constant. Total levels of phycobiliproteins remained unchanged according to single-cell in vivo spectra. However, the regular 16-kDa phycoerythrin band decreased and finally disappeared 16-20 d after initiation of Fe limitation, concomitant with the accumulation of a 20-kDa protein cross-reacting with the phycoerythrin antibody. Concurrently, nitrogenase expression and activity increased. Fe limitation dampened the daily cycle of photosystem II (PSII) activity characteristic of diazotrophic Trichodesmium cells. Further, it increased the number and prolonged the time period of occurrence of cells with elevated basic fluorescence (F(0)). Additionally, it increased the effective cross-section of PSII, probably as a result of enhanced coupling of phycobilisomes to PSII, and led to up-regulation of the Fe stress protein IsiA. * Trichodesmium survives short-term Fe limitation by selectively down-regulating nitrogen fixation while maintaining but re-arranging the photosynthetic apparatus.  相似文献

Women with a diagnosis of bipolar and major depressive disorders are at higher risk to develop postpartum depression. The primary objective of this longitudinal study was to determine whether daily activity rhythms and sleep parameters differ between women with and without a history of a mood disorder across the perinatal period. A secondary objective was to determine whether changes in these parameters were associated with postpartum mood. In total, 33 women were included in this study, 15 of which had a history of a mood disorder (high-risk group) and 18 who did not (low-risk group). Sleep and daily rhythms were assessed subjectively and objectively during the third trimester (≥26 weeks gestation) and again at 6–12 weeks postpartum. Mood was also assessed at both time points. Women in the high-risk group showed greater subjective daily rhythms and sleep disturbances across the perinatal period. Objective sleep efficiency was worse in the high-risk group in the postpartum period. Changes in both subjective daily rhythms and objective sleep efficiency were predictive of changes in depressive symptoms across the perinatal period. These findings encourage the development of preventative therapeutics to ensure circadian rhythm and sleep stability throughout the perinatal period.  相似文献

In an attempt to clarify the interactions between the available nitrogen source and the photosystems in cyanobacteria, O2 exchange and fluorescence emission were monitored in spheroplasts and intact cells of the non N2-fixing cyanobacterium Phormidium laminosum (strain OH-1-p.Cl1) growing on different nitrogen sources or in the absence of nitrogen. Short-term (time scale of seconds to minutes), NH+4 addition to NO3-growing or N-starved cells and, to a minor extent, NO3addition to N-starved cells, induced state 2 transitions both in light and dark. Long term (time scale of days), the fluorescence yield of PSII relative to that of PSII at 77 K was higher in NO3- than in NH+4 growing cells, and even higher in N-starved cells. In the dark, the plastoquinone pool was more reduced in NH+4- than in NO3-growing cells. Both PSII and PSI activities and the degree of linking between both photosystems were affected in the long term, so that non-cyclic electron transport decreased in parallel to the ferredoxin requirement to assimilate each nitrogen source. Results indicate that nitrogen metabolism exerts short- and long-term control over the photosynthetic apparatus, which acclimates to the energy requirement of the available nitrogen source.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Daily rhythms controlling oviposition, egg-hatching and adult eclosion in the sorghum shootfly, Atherigona soccata Rondani, were investigated. Eggs were laid only during the photophase of a LD 12:12 cycle, in two peaks. Under continuous light, this oviposition was considerably attenuated but not made immediately arrhythmic. Egg-hatching and adult eclosion both commenced just before dawn. Some feature of the scotophase during or immediately after black-head formation apparently acts as a signal for hatching. Eclosion was controlled by light but its timing in the field was modified by temperature. The last 2–3 days of the pupal period constituted the most sensitive stage, and light signals received during this period determined the time of eclosion. Ecological advantages of these rhythms to the shootfly are discussed.  相似文献

When cyanobacterium cells are grown under extremely low CO2 concentration, the number of carboxysomes, structures containing ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase (Rubisco; EC 4.1.1.39), is known to increase. This suggests that Rubisco helps to regulate photosynthesis in cyanobacteria. However, no studies have been done on the changes of Rubisco content and activity in response to the extracellular CO2 concentration, and no information is available on its effect on photosynthesis. To elucidate the relationship between the expression responses of Rubisco and extracellular CO2, wild-type cells (Synechococcus PCC7942) and carboxysome-lacking cells were grown under various CO2 concentrations, and Rubisco activity was determined. In both strains, Rubisco activity increased when the cells were grown under a CO2 concentration around, or less than, K 1/2(CO2) of photosynthesis. In carboxysome-lacking cells, Rubisco activity increased five to six times at most, and a simultaneous increase in the rate of photosynthesis was observed. These results suggest that stimulation of expression of Rubisco occurs to compensate for the decrease in the rate of photosynthesis under CO2-limited conditions. ABSTRACT. Three eclosion rhythms of Diatraea grandiosella Dyar (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) showed different phase relationships to the LD cycle, different degrees of synchronization and different sensitivity to a brief light perturbation. Egg hatching occurred mainly at dawn, whereas pupation and adult emergence occurred mainly at dusk. The egg hatching was the most synchronized rhythm of the three, pupation the least. The egg hatching rhythm was more sensitive to a brief light perturbation than was the adult emergence rhythm. A light pulse in the middle of the night caused greater disturbance in the egg hatching rhythm than did a pulse placed in the early night. The three rhythms persisted in both DD and LL. LL free-running rhythm gradually became desynchronized and broke down at the third cycle. The phase relationships reveal difficulties in applying the 'external coincidence model' to this species' photoperiodic response.  相似文献

The photosynthetic performance of a helical tubular photobioreactor ("Biocoil"), incorporating the filamentous cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis, was investigated. The photobioreactor was constructed in a cylindrical shape (0.9 m high) with a 0.25-m(2)basal area and a photostage comprising 60 m of transparent PVC tubing of 1.6-cm inner diameter (volume = 12.1 L). The inner surface of the cylinder (area = 1.32 m(2)) was illuminated with cool white fluorescent lamps; the energy input of photosynthetically active radiation(PAR, 400 to 700 nm) into the photobioreactor was 2920 kJ per day. An air-lift system ncorporating 4%CO(2) was used to circulate the growth medium in the tubing. The maximum productivity achieved in batch culture was 7.18 g dry biomass per day [0.51 g . d biomass/L . day, or 5.44 g . d biomass/m(2)(inner surface of cylindrical shape)/day] which corresponded to a photosynthetic (PAR) efficiency of 5.45%. The CO(2) was efficiently removed from the gaseous stream; monitoring the CO(2) the outlet and inlet gas streams showed a 70% removal of CO(2) from the inlet gas over an 8-h period with almost maximum growth rate. Abstract Anabaena variabilis can be grown with dependence on either molybdenum (Mo) or vanadium (V) in the medium with essentially the same growth rates. Vanadium cultures reduce C2H2 to C2H4 and partly (to 2–3%) to C2H6. These C2H4 and C2H6 formations can be shown to be strictly light dependent, proving that the gases are formed by the cyanobacterium. C2H4 and C2H6 productions are accompanied by a H2 formation which is much higher than in Mo cultures. Maximal C2H2-formation rates are 2/3 lower in V-grown cells compared to Mo control cultures. This is the first demonstration of a light-dependent ethane formation and of the occurrence of the alternative nitrogenase in any phototroph.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to test the effects of light on melatonin rhythms in the pineal gland and gut of goldfish Carassius auratus and to investigate whether melatonin function differed in these two tissues, which are photosensitive and non-photosensitive respectively. Rhythms were evaluated by measuring arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AANAT2) and melatonin receptor 1 (MT-R1) mRNA expression and melatonin concentration in the pineal gland, gut (in vivo), and cell cultures of the two tissues (in vitro). Compared to control, pineal gland melatonin secretion was higher at night, whereas the 24-h dark and ophthalmectomy groups maintained higher AANAT2 and MT-R1 mRNA expression during the day. Melatonin levels and AANAT2 and MT-R1 mRNA expression in the gut were also the highest at night, but the 24-h light, dark, and ophthalmectomy groups did not significantly differ from control. Furthermore, we measured AANAT2 and MT-R1 mRNA expression in high temperature water (30 °C) to investigate differences in the antioxidant capacity of pineal gland vs. gut melatonin. Melatonin and H2O2 levels, as well as AANAT2 and MT-R1 mRNA expression, were all higher in the two tissues under thermal stress, compared with their levels at 22 °C. Taken together, our results suggest that light has no effect on melatonin patterns in the gut, which appears to exhibit its own circadian rhythm, but both gut and pineal gland melatonin exhibit similar antioxidant function.  相似文献

We report a progressive disruption of 24-h rhythms in fasting blood glucose (FBG), body temperature (BT) and heart rate (HR) associated with metabolic dysfunction and the development of prediabetes (PD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in overweight middle-aged (40–69 years old) humans. Increasing BT and HR mean values and declining 24-h BT and HR amplitudes accompany adverse changes in metabolic state. Increased nocturnal BT and a phase delay of the 24-h BT rhythm, deviant 24-h HR profile and a phase advance of the 24-h HR and FBG rhythms are early signs of the PD metabolic state. In T2DM, the 24-h FBG rhythm is no longer detectable, and the 24-h amplitudes of BT and HR are greatly diminished. In addition, lepton and creatinine values were lowered in T2DM. Moreover, positive correlations between FBG and body mass index, BMI, and negative correlations between the 24-h amplitude of FBG and BMI indicate that overweight is an additional factor causing disruption of the circadian rhythms. Further studies on circadian disruption as a consequence of metabolic dysfunction are necessary. The quantitative analysis of changing circadian BT and HR rhythms may provide prognostic markers of T2DM and therapeutic targets for its prevention and correction.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Diurnality in rodents is relatively rare and occurs primarily in areas with low nighttime temperatures such as at high altitudes and desert areas. However, many factors can influence temporal activity rhythms of animals, both in the field and the laboratory. The temporal activity patterns of the diurnal ice rat were investigated in the laboratory with, and without, access to running wheels, and in constant conditions with running wheels. Ice rats appeared to be fundamentally diurnal but used their running wheels during the night. In constant conditions, general activity remained predominantly diurnal while wheel running was either nocturnal or diurnal. In some animals, entrainment of the wheel running rhythm was evident, as demonstrated by free-running periods that were different from 24 h. In other animals, the wheel running activity abruptly switched from nocturnal to subjective day as soon as the animals entered DD, and reverted back to nocturnal once returned to LD, suggesting the rhythms were masked by light. Wheel running rhythms appears to be less robust and more affected by light compared to general activity rhythms. In view of present and future environmental changes, the existence of more unstable activity rhythms that can readily switch between temporal niches might be crucial for the survival of the species.  相似文献
