Recruitment in clonal organisms often involves both sexual and asexual processes whereby new individuals are added to adult populations. During 1988–1990,1 examined local distribution and abundance patterns, substrate colonization, and recruitment in riffle populations of the freshwater bryozoan Plumatella emarginata. Abundance levels of P. emarginata at eight selected study sites were strongly dependent on substrate size but not on overall substrate availability or stream position. Colonization of large, P. emarginata-free substrates at one site resulted in an aggregated dispersion pattern of short-lived colonies and the production of locally persistent sessoblasts. Sessoblast production rates were dependent of colony size and number. However, the estimated single season rates of colonization and recruitment were insufficient to account for the high resident population on large substrates. I conclude that sessoblast persistence is essential for escaping mortality and promoting future recruitment and local population growth and that the population dynamics of P. emarginata are strongly nonequilibrial being influenced by unpredictable disturbances as well as by rates of recruitment which increase with local density.  相似文献

A new freshwater bryozoan species, Plumatella mukaii, is recognized from eastern Asia and western South America. Colonies and statoblasts both bear a resemblance to P. emarginata, and have often been confused with that species, especially in Japanese studies. Floatoblasts and sessoblasts are enclosed within a tough, wrinkled, membrane which resists removal by mechanical means. Floatoblasts are generally smaller than those of P. emarginata, but display unusually high variability in their overall dimensions. The species has been reported from both lentic and lotic habitats. In Asia, the range includes Japan, Korea, China, India and Indonesia. It has most recently also been found at several sites in Chile. The recognition of P. mukaii narrows the previously reported range of P. emarginata and invites a re-inspection of that species worldwide.  相似文献

Pinus halepensis, a Mediterranean pine tree, is a partially serotinous species: individual trees of this species carry both non-serotinous and serotinous cones. Serotinous cones open mainly after fire, whereas non-serotinous cones open in absence of fire. In this study we addressed the question, whether or not this cone response is linked with the germination response of seeds to fires. Two main factors associated with fire are heating of seeds and soil pH. A combination of high heat and high pH simulates a scenario with fire, whereas low heat and low pH simulates a scenario without fire. We assessed the separate and combined effects of heat and pH on the germination rate and the percentage of germination of seeds from non-serotinous cones and two age classes of serotinous cones of P. halepensis. Heat had no effect on the percentage of germination of seeds from any of the cone types, but did positively affect the germination rates of seeds from both age-classes of serotinous cones. High pH negatively affected the germination rate of seeds from all cone types as well as the percentage of germination of seeds from non-serotinous cones. The combinations of heat and pH had different effects on the three cone types: percentage of germination and rate of germination of seeds from non-serotinous cones was higher in the combination high heat-high pH than in the combination low heat-low pH. In the combination high heat-high pH, seeds from serotinous cones germinated better than seeds from non-serotinous cones. The different germination responses of seeds from non-serotinous and serotinous cones could not be attributed to differences in cone age. Our results indicate that the cone response is linked to the germination response of the seeds in P. halepensis, with seeds from serotinous cones being more tolerant to fire related factors. The distribution and seasonal dynamics of Centropages abdominalis and C. tenuiremis (Copepoda) in Amursky Bay (Sea of Japan) were studied from May through November 1991. C. abdominalis occurred in plankton from May through August and in November, with a peak density of more than 40000 specimens/m3 in June, at a temperature of 15–18°C. C. tenuiremis occurred from late June through November, with a maximum total density of 6900 specimens/m3 in August, at 23°C. During the observation period, the distribution of species in the bay was irregular due to the hydrological regime and sanitary conditions of water.  相似文献

Population dynamics of chironomid larvae in the littoral zone of Lake Maarsseveen I were investigated to a depth of 6 m. No essential differences in the composition and density between various sampling stations in the shallow sand flats were found. Two species,Cladotanytarsus mancus andStictochironomus sticticus, were found to be the main components of the chironomid population to a depth of 4 m. The density ofCladotanytarsus, which occurred predominantly to a depth of 1 m, increased from June to a maximum in December. In May and June, the entireCladotanytarsus population emerged.Stictochironomus had its peak of abundance in June. From this cohort, a part, differing in size for each of the various years, emerged in August. The remainder of this population, together with the offspring of the August adults, emerged in May. The size of the August midges, and the number of its eggs was smaller than that of the May midges. At depths greater than 4 m,Tanytarsus bathophillus was found to be the dominant chironomid.In summer the abundance of the small (second and third instars)Stictochironomus was primarily affected by water mite predation. In autumn and winter,Cladotanytarsus was the main food source for water mites. In autumn, whenStictochironomus larvae have molted into the fourth instar, predation by bream decreased the density of these larvae. In winter, the impact of this fish is negligible.  相似文献

豚草(Ambrosia artemisiifoliaLinn.)和三裂叶豚草(A. trifidaLinn.)是我国恶性入侵物种,分布常呈高密度单一种群,且结实量庞大。探讨二者不同植株部位种子萌发(休眠)与扩散特点,对了解二者入侵机制具有重要意义。以新疆伊犁新源县发生的豚草和三裂叶豚草为材料,在种子成熟期,根据植株高度、枝条长度,按比例从上到下分为9个部位,对不同植株部位种子的形态特征、数量和萌发特性进行比较,分析这两种植物不同植株部位种子萌发与扩散的共性和差异性,研究二者种群密度调节和入侵的关系。结果表明:1)两个物种内不同植株部位间种子的长、宽、百粒重无显著差异,但三裂叶豚草种子的长度和宽度分别是豚草的2—3倍,百粒重高7倍。结合两个物种在伊犁地区分布差异,认为种子大小是两个物种分布区域性差异的原因之一。2)豚草和三裂叶豚草植株外部的上顶、中顶、上中部位种子数占植株总种子数量的50%,中中、下顶占比约23%,而下部的上基、中基、下中、下基的种子数占比约27%,表明当年生产的种子有近73%的比例具有远距离扩散的潜力。3)豚草和三裂叶豚草不同植株部位种子的萌发率具有上端中端下端的趋势;初始萌发时间为下端中端上端;萌发持续时间为上端中端下端。这种萌发方式避免了同一生长季大批种子同时萌发有可能导致高密度死亡的风险。基于上述研究分析,认为豚草和三裂叶豚草不同植株部位种子具有不同的适应功能。其中,上部所产生的种子具较强的扩散能力和低休眠性,有利于两物种快速占据新生境并扩大种群;而中、下部位的种子在母株周围就近扩散,翌年萌发率低,缓解了种群竞争。豚草和三裂叶豚草不同植株部位生产的种子特性和萌发差异是两个物种进行种群密度调节和扩散入侵的重要原因。  相似文献

Morphological characters of statoblasts (including floatoblasts and sessoblasts) in freshwater bryozoans have been important in phylactolaemate systematics and identification in that older phylogenetic hypotheses relied heavily on statoblast morphology. To assess the reliability of statoblast characters in drawing conclusions about phylogeny, we examined the phylogenetic distribution of metric and proportional floatoblast characters, floatoblast symmetry, and floatoblast and sessoblast microsculpture in Plumatellidae, the largest family of phylactolaemates, in the context of molecular phylogenetic reconstructions based on nucleotide sequences of parts of the mitochondrial 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, and cytochrome b (cytb) genes. Adding cytb sequences to a previous phylogeny based on 12S and 16S increased support only for a node including Plumatella vaihiriae in the P. repens clade. Characters of gross floatoblast morphology were generally not phylogenetically informative individually, but collectively discriminated among members of three relatively well-supported clades that were analyzed as pre-defined groups in a discriminant analysis. Two characters of floatoblast microsculpture (reticulation and hypertubercles) were restricted to particular clades; other characters (e.g., villi) were clearly convergent. In nine of 11 cases, fenestral microsculpture was identical or partly correlated between the floatoblast and sessoblast of a species. Overall, our results indicate that statoblast morphology is not highly phylogenetically constrained.  相似文献

We investigated seasonal changes in the density of epiphytic cladocerans Alona spp. (Chydoridae, Anomopoda) in two habitats, emergent and submerged aquatic plants, in Lake Suwa, Japan, from April to August 1998 and from April to November 2000. Alona had a density peak in early June on reeds (emergent) and in late June on Potamogeton malaianus (submerged). In summer, Alona density remained low in both habitats. Although density was positively correlated with the abundance of epiphytic algae, the birth rate was constant and no correlation between algal abundance and clutch size was detected. In a field experiment using ropes as an artificial substrate covered with high and low densities of epiphytic algae as food, more Alona attached to the ropes with the high density of algae. These results suggest that Alona may select food-rich habitats and migrate seasonally, and that migration is an important factor in the population dynamics of epiphytic chydorid cladocerans such as Alona. In Lake Suwa, Alona may migrate from the reed zone to the submerged macrophyte zone in June.  相似文献

Summary Germination synchrony may facilitate damping-off epidemics by creating a high density of uniformly susceptible individuals. We tested the hypothesis that synchronous germination causes increased seed and seedling mortality from damping-off in two legume species attacked by the fungal pathogen, Pythium aphanidermatum. Glycine max exhibited rapid, synchronous germination compared to its progenitor, G. soja, and suffered greater mortality from both pre-and postemergent damping-off in controlled environment experiments. However, when mixed-aged populations of G. max were created experimentally by staggering planting times, a significant increase in damping-off mortality occurred. In G. soja, which typically has mixed-aged populations due to asynchronous germination, experimental populations with an even-aged distribution also suffered increased damping-off mortality. Hence, the relationship between population age structure and damping-off mortality was species-specific. We propose that species differences in the duration of individual seedling susceptibility to disbase interact with population age structure to control the cutcome of damping-off epidemics.  相似文献

The germination characteristics of a population of the winter annual Phacelia dubia (L.) Trel. var. dubia from the middle Tennessee cedar glades were investigated in an attempt to define the factor(s) regulating germination in nature. Factors considered were changes in physiological response of the seeds (after-ripening), temperature, age, light and darkness, and soil moisture. At seed dispersal (late May to early June), approximately 50 % of the seeds were non-dormant but, would germinate only at low temperatures (10–15 C). As the seeds aged from June to September, there was an increase in rate and total percent of germination at 10, 15, and 20 C, and the maximum temperature for germination increased to 25 C. Little or no germination occurred at the June, July, and August temperatures in 0- to 2-month-old seeds, even in seeds on soil that was kept continuously moist during this 3-month period. At the September, October, and November temperatures 3- to 5-month-old seeds germinated to high percentages. In all experiments seeds germinated better at a 14-hr photoperiod than in constant darkness. Inability of 0- to 2-month-old seeds to germinate at high summer temperatures allows P. dubia dubia to pass the dry summer in the seed stage, while increase in optimum and maximum temperatures for germination during the summer permits seeds to germinate in late summer and early fall when conditions are favorable for seedling survival and eventual maturation.  相似文献

The occurrence of Diaphanosoma excisum (Sars), a freshwater cladoceran, in benthic samples of an intertidal sandy beach is reported. Population density was seasonal. A relatively high density was recorded from June to September (south-west monsoon season) with a maximum (46 ind 10 cm–2) in September at a depth of 10–15 cm of sediment. A sudden decline occurred during north-east monsoon (October to January), and in the fair season (February to May), the cladocerans disappeared. Mean density varied (P<0.001) with sediment depth and season and showed a contagious dispersion. Abundance was negatively correlated with salinity (r = –0.76) but positively with POC (r =0.79) and mean grain size of the sediment (r = 0.93). The density of D. excisum was highest in fine sand.  相似文献

The seasonal occurrence of Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida populations on hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) was studied at two different localities in Ibaraki, Japan, during a three-year period. There were two types of seasonal population trends: one with a population peak from May to June, and the other with the spring peak in June and the autumn peak in September–October. Each year the populations on hydrangea plants abruptly declined just after the spring peak. Predators showed a delayed density-dependent numerical response. The population crashed even in the absence of predators, suggesting that the predators had nothing to do with the June decline. Furthermore, the rate of development from larva to adult and the fecundity in adult females on detached hydrangea leaves decreased markedly just prior to the abrupt decline in density in June. Consequently, seasonal changes in plant quality (perhaps influenced by secondary compounds) seem to contribute to the drastic decline of T. kanzawai density on hydrangea in June.  相似文献

Most of the area in pine woodlands is occupied by perennial seeders that regenerate from seeds in the first winter after the fire and by annuals. Control of the germination in the regenerating vegetation after wildfire is therefore a primary ecological component of the post-fire succession in this ecosystem. The aim of the study presented here was to determine the distribution of Pinus, Cistus and other plants seeds around burned Pinus halepensis trees, and to measure the conditions related to seed germination in the upper soil layers in the same locations. The study was carried out in a 50-year old planted Pinus halepensis woodland that was burned down by a wildfire in July 1995. The variation of seedbank density was determined by collecting samples under the canopies of burned trees and in a nearby open area. Pine seedbank density decreased and that of Cistus and annuals increased with increasing distance from the burned trunks. Most pine seeds were present in the ash layer while those of the other plants were in the soil. In situ germination experiments showed that seedling density decreased with distance from the burned trunks while the proportion of pines in the seedling population increased. This was a result of seedbank variation and germination inhibition by the high pH conditions caused by the ash. The establishment of sparse pine seedling under the dead tree canopies insured their rapid development without interference by other plants and played a key role in the regeneration and stability of the pine woodland community. The concomitant mass germination of the perennial seeders in the rest of the area prevented invasion by annuals.  相似文献

倒披针叶虫实(Corispermum lehmannianum)在古尔班通古特沙漠广泛分布,重要值仅次于该沙漠建群种白梭梭(Haloxylon persicum),对沙面的稳定起着非常重要的作用。采用固定样方法对自然条件下该植物的分布特征和种群数量动态进行了研究。结果表明:1)倒披针叶虫实在沙丘各坡位均占有较高重要值,尤其活化程度较高的中部和上部优势度更明显;2)生长季节的不同阶段,除坡顶外,其他各坡位种子主要分3批萌发出苗,不同时期种子萌发出苗数量存在差异,3月份有大量种子萌发出苗,4月份种子萌发出苗数最多,5月份萌发出苗量逐渐减少。而坡顶3月份种子萌发出苗量最多,4月至5月均无种子萌发出苗。因此,除坡顶外,种子萌发出苗数量和种群密度在其他各坡位呈先增后减的趋势。生长季结束时各坡位种群密度表现为:中部和上部底部和丘间顶部;3)成熟植株单位面积种子产量为:中部和上部丘间和底部顶部,且中部和上部单位面积种子数量极显著多于丘间、坡底和坡顶(P0.01);4)通过对0—5 cm和6—10 cm土壤种子库密度研究发现,沙丘中部和上部种子库密度显著高于其他坡位。综合以上研究表明,倒披针叶虫实在沙面较活化的中部和上部呈优势分布,对沙漠环境具有良好适应性。因此,该植物是一种极具开发潜力的沙生植物。  相似文献

An analysis was performed of the climatic responses of the radial growth of Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. at two sites—both of which included contrasting north- and south-facing slopes—in Tura, central Siberia, with the development of ring width and maximum-density chronologies for each slope. Both residual and standard chronologies of ring widths were positively correlated with temperature from late May until mid June on all four slopes. By contrast, standard chronologies of ring widths were negatively correlated with precipitation during the winter (from October to April) and in May on the north-facing slope at site 1 and on the south-facing slope at site 2 respectively. The negative correlations with precipitation during the winter and in May on some of the slopes suggested that delayed snowmelt in early spring might inhibit the radial growth of L. gmelinii, and the effects of snow are likely to vary with topography. Both residual and standard chronologies of maximum densities were positively correlated with temperature in early July on all four slopes. Maximum densities were also positively correlated with precipitation during summer of the previous year on all the slopes. These suggest that no major differences exist in terms of responses of maximum density to climatic factors between the north- and south-facing slopes.  相似文献

The temporal availability of propagules is a critical factor in sustaining pioneer riparian tree populations along snowmelt-driven rivers because seedling establishment is strongly linked to seasonal hydrology. River regulation in semi-arid regions threatens to decouple seed development and dispersal from the discharge regime to which they evolved. Using the lower Tuolumne River as a model system, we quantified and modeled propagule availability for Populus fremontii (POFR), Salix gooddingii (SAGO), and Salix exigua (SAEX), the tree and shrub species that dominate near-channel riparian stands in the San Joaquin Basin, CA. A degree-day model was fit to field data of seasonal seed density and local temperature from three sites in 2002–2004 to predict the onset of the peak dispersal period. To evaluate historical synchrony of seed dispersal and seasonal river hydrology, we compared peak spring runoff timing to modeled peak seed release periods for the last 75 years. The peak seed release period began on May 15 for POFR (range April 23–June 10), May 30 for SAGO (range May 19–June 11) and May 31 for SAEX (range May 8–June 30). Degree-day models for the onset of seed release reduced prediction error by 40–67% over day-of-year means; the models predicted best the interannual, versus site-to-site, variation in timing. The historical analysis suggests that POFR seed release coincided with peak runoff in almost all years, whereas SAGO and SAEX dispersal occurred during the spring flood recession. The degree-day modeling approach reduce uncertainty in dispersal timing and shows potential for guiding flow releases on regulated rivers to increase riparian tree recruitment at the lowest water cost.  相似文献

Although a recent study has suggested that the minimum temperature from late April to mid-May in the year preceding flowering causes mast seeding in Fagus crenata, no direct evidence is available to support this finding. The aim of the present investigation was, therefore, to test – in a field experiment – whether the minimum temperature determines mast seeding in F. crenata. We examined the effect of nighttime temperatures on flower-bud initiation in F. crenata by enclosing fruit-bearing branches in heated bags at night, thereby maintaining average nighttime temperatures of approximately 2°C above the ambient temperatures. Heating was applied at night from 21 April to 20 May, 21 May to 19 June, and 21 April to 19 June in 2001. Female inflorescence initiation was inhibited by the nocturnal heating in the period 21 April to 20 May and 21 May to 19 June. However, nocturnal heating from 21 April to 20 May was the more important based on the odds ratio of the former being much lower than that of the latter in a logistic regression model. Male inflorescence initiation was also inhibited by nocturnal heating from 21 April to 20 May. We therefore conclude that flower-bud initiation in F. crenata was controlled by nighttime temperatures between 21 April and 20 May.  相似文献

对频繁暴发微囊藻水华的西洞庭冲天湖表层底泥和上覆水取样,检测和分析了底泥表层微囊藻休眠体丰度和菌浓度、上覆水中微囊藻细胞丰度和菌浓度以及部分理化性质,结合室内模拟试验。结果表明:2—6月份冲天湖底泥表层和上覆水中总菌浓度均显著上升(P0.05),底泥表层总菌浓度显著高于上覆水(P0.05),优势菌群均为微小杆菌属(Exiguobacterium)、假单胞菌属(Pseudomonas)和芽孢杆菌属(Bacillus);4月份底泥表层微囊藻休眠体开始复苏且休眠体丰度下降,6月份休眠体丰度显著低于4—5月份(P0.05),而上覆水中微囊藻细胞丰度上升,6月份显著高于4—5月份(P0.05);复苏优势藻为铜绿微囊藻(Microcystis aeruginosa)、水华微囊藻(Microcystis flos-aqua)和惠氏微囊藻(Microcystis wesenbergii);复苏期间促休眠体复苏优势菌群浓度显著上升、"底泥-上覆水"界面溶解氧浓度与TN/TP比显著下降(P0.05)。说明冲天湖底泥表层和上覆水优势菌群可能通过改变底泥表层理化环境影响微囊藻休眠体复苏。  相似文献

为探索梭梭根际土壤微生物结构特征及其与肉苁蓉寄生的关系,应用磷脂脂肪酸(PLFA)法分析了5—8月份梭梭生长季节的根际土壤微生物种类及群落结构特征,采用湿筛倾注-蔗糖离心法对其根际土壤AM真菌进行了初步分离和鉴定,并分析了肉苁蓉寄生与梭梭根际微生物及环境因子间的相关性。结果表明,5—7月3个月份的梭梭根际土壤微生物磷脂脂肪酸种类及含量均显著高于8月份,总磷脂脂肪酸和AM真菌磷脂脂肪酸以6月份含量最高。梭梭根际土壤共鉴定出AM真菌4属35种,它们分别为球囊霉属(Glomus)22种、无梗囊霉属(Acaulospora)7种、多孢囊霉属(Diversispora)3种和巨孢囊霉属(Gigaspora)3种。其中以黑球囊霉(Glomus melanosporum)和双网无梗囊霉(Acaulospora bireticulata)为优势种群,并且发现了与寄生有关的巨孢囊霉属AM真菌。6月份和8月份的AM真菌孢子数量最多,而5月份的AM真菌孢子数量最低。6月份梭梭根际土壤提取液得到的肉苁蓉种子萌发率(65.94%)和田间接种寄生率(59.19%)均为最高值,而5月份土壤提取液测试得到的肉苁蓉种子萌发率最低。因此,推测梭梭根际AM真菌可能参与了肉苁蓉的寄生过程。相关分析表明梭梭根际土壤微生物种类和数量主要与土壤温湿度和土壤理化性质相关性较大,其中可能与寄生有关的真菌数量与土壤温度呈显著正相关;肉苁蓉寄生率与土壤温度及土壤养分呈显著负相关。研究为解析梭梭根际土壤微生物在肉苁蓉寄生过程中的作用以及指导肉苁蓉人工种植提供参考。  相似文献
