Several trace fossils of burrowing ophiuroids, Asteriacites lumbricalis von Schlotheim 1820, occur on slabs of thinly‐bedded silty limestone in the lower Spathian part of the Lower Triassic Thaynes Formation in central Utah. This is the first record of Asteriacites in the Lower Triassic of North America. Their occurrence adds information to studies of the recovery of marine faunas following the Permian extinctions, including the oxygénation of benthic sediments.  相似文献

Until the early 1980s, the composition and distribution of the asteroid (starfish), ophiuroid (brittle star) and holothurian (sea cucumber) bottom fauna of the southeastern Weddell Sea was virtually unknown. This southernmost part of the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean is a typical high-latitude Antarctic region located in the circumpolar permanent pack-ice zone. It became accessible for large-scale scientific surveys only through the availability of modern ice-breaking research vessels, such as the German RV “Polarstern”. Here, we describe a dataset of the faunal composition and abundance of starfish, brittle star and sea cucumber assemblages in this area, based on collections from trawl catches carried out during three “Polarstern” cruises in 1983, 1984 and 1985. The set comprises a total of 4,509 records of abundances of 35 asteroid species (with a total of 2,089 specimens) and 38 ophiuroid species (with a total of 18,484 specimens) from 34 stations, as well as of 66 holothurian species (with a total of 20,918 specimens) from 59 stations including zero-abundances (absences). A synthesizing zoogeographical community analysis confirms the presence of three distinct assemblages of asteroids, ophiuroids, and holothurians with highest species richness on the eastern shelf. Overall, starfishes, brittle stars and sea cucumbers were present at all sites investigated in the study area but composition and abundance of asterozoan (asteroids and ophiuroids together) and holothurian fauna varied considerably. A synthesizing zoogeographical community analysis confirms the presence of three distinct assemblages of asteroids, ophiuroids, and holothurians with highest species richness on the eastern shelf. In the case of asterozoans, water depth and latitude seemed to be the most important drivers of assemblage distribution and composition. One of the holothurian assemblages was part of the rich macrozoobenthic community dominated by a diverse and abundant epifauna, mainly sponges and gorgonians. Another one was mainly composed of vagrant deposit-feeding species inhabiting a predominantly non-colonised substratum. In addition, a mixed holothurian assemblage was identified.  相似文献

The brittle star Taeniaster bohemicus was found in association with the trace fossil Asteriacites lumbricalis in the Upper Ordovi‐cian of central Bohemia. Morphological features of the trace, coupled with spatial interrelationships between trace and body fossils, provide evidence that the brittle star represents the trace‐maker of this Asteriacites. The cubichnial burrows probably represent negative phototaxis among the ophiuroids.  相似文献

There are several studies of neural development in various echinoderms, but few on ophiuroids, which develop indirectly via the production of pluteus larvae, as do echinoids. To determine the extent of similarity of neuroanatomy and neural development in the ophiuroids with other echinoderm larvae, we investigated the development of the nervous system in the brittle star Amphipholis kochii (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea) by immunohistochemistry. Immunoreactive cells first appeared bilaterally in the animal pole at the late gastrula stage, and there was little migration of the neural precursors during A. kochii ontogeny, as is also the case in echinoids and holothuroids. On the other hand, neural specification in the presumptive ciliary band near the base of the arms does occur in ophiuroid larvae and is a feature they share with echinoids and ophiuroids. The ophiopluteus larval nervous system is similar to that of auricularia larvae on the whole, including the lack of a fine network of neurites in the epidermis and the presence of neural connections across the oral epidermis. Ophioplutei possess a pair of bilateral apical organs that differ from those of echinoid echinoplutei in terms of relative position. They also possess coiled cilia, which may possess a sensory function, but in the same location as the serotonergic apical ganglia. These coiled cilia are thought to be a derived structure in pluteus-like larvae. Our results suggest that the neural specification in the animal plate in ophiuroids, holothuroids, and echinoids is a plesiomorphic feature of the Ambulacraria, whereas neural specification at the base of the larval arms may be a more derived state restricted to pluteus-like larvae.  相似文献

Knowledge on the morphology of Early Triassic ophiuroids is very limited, in spite of the relatively high number of described species. This hampers attempts to use morphology-based phylogenetic analyses in order to explore the early diversification of the ophiuroid modern clades between the latest Paleozoic and the early Mesozoic. Here, a new ophiuroid from the Early Triassic of southern Idaho (USA) is described and assigned to the new taxon Shoshonura brayardi Thuy nov. gen., nov. sp. It is part of an exceptional Early Triassic faunal assemblage recently described as the Paris Biota. On account of the arm morphology and the shape of the arm spines and arm spine articulations, Shoshonura brayardi nov. gen., nov. sp. is considered a basal member of the suborder Ophiodermatina.  相似文献

Summary

The larval development of the ophiocomid ophiuroid Ophiomastix venosais described using SEM. The gastrula transforms into a uniformly ciliated early larva which progressively changes into a lecithotrophic late premetamorphic larva with a continuous bilateral ciliated band. This stage is short-lived and equivalent to a highly reduced ophiopluteus. Comparisons between O. venosa and other ophiuroid species whose development has been investigated suggest that, whatever the developmental mode (lecithotrophic or planktotrophic), a pluteus stage always occurs in ophiuroids with planktonic development. Two metamorphic stages were identified, the late metamorphic larva differing from the early one by the closure of the larval mouth. The appearance of the permanent mouth marks the end of the metamorphosis. The postlarva still possesses remnants of larval features. The transformation of the reduced ophiopluteus into a barrel-shaped metamorphic larva with transverse ciliated bands, a vitellaria larva, is followed. The possible occurrence of a unique type of metamorphic larva in non-brooding ophiuroids is discussed. Verification of this, however, needs further SEM investigations on metamorphic larva from species having “regular” planktotrophic development.  相似文献

While Late Cretaceous ophiuroids are relatively well known in Europe, these faunas have been much less studied in North Africa. With the exception of some Tunisian assemblages preliminary described at the turn of the 21st century, nothing is known about the Cretaceous brittle stars of the southwestern Tethyan margin. The present paper seeks to bring the first data about hitherto unknown ophiuroids recently found in the early upper Cenomanian succession of the eastern side of the Preafrican trough (Menaguir section, Algeria). This “community” of brittle stars comprises at least eight species. Most of them are probably new, but have not been formally named here. These are representatives of the families Hemieuryalidae, Amphiuridae, Ophiodermatidae, Ophiacanthidae, Ophiopezidae and probably also Ophiomyxidae and Ophiobyrsidae. Almost all vertebrae are zygospondylous; no streptospondylous vertebrae indicate the absence of the order Euryalida here. Most of the ophiuroids belong to the orders Amphilepidida and Ophiacanthida. Ophiotitanos serrata, Ophiomyxa? aff. jekerica, Ophiojagtus? sp. and some other taxa resembling ophiuroid assemblages from the Late Cretaceous of central, western and northern Europe. With respect to the late Cenomanian age, the depth of the sea and the taxonomic composition, there are some similarities with ophiuroids of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin. The mid-ramp subtidal facies suggests that brittle stars lived here in a warm, euphotic and probably shallow sea.  相似文献

Ophiuroidea is the most speciose of all classes of Echinoderma. It is an important component in benthic ecosystems, occurring in almost all ecological niches of modern seas. To date, the phylogeny and complete evolutionary history of the ophiuroids have not yet been fully resolved. In this study, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) of Ophiothrix (Ophiothrix) exigua and two deep-sea species Histampica sp. CS049 and Ophioplinthaca sp. M5261. These two deep-sea ophiuroids displayed reversed strand-compositional bias and rearranged gene orders. Thirteen distinct patterns of mitochondrial gene order among ophiuroid mitogenomes were detected, with two gene order newly found in Ophiuroidea. Our data supported the gene order found in all sampled Ophiuridae as the most likely ancestral order of all Ophiuroidea. To improve phylogenetic accuracy based on nucleotide differences, two different criteria were used for the analyses: (i) nucleotide sequence from all codon positions (PCG123); (ii) the NTE method (“Neutral Transitions Excluded”) for ameliorating the misleading effects of a reverse strand bias in the data. The two methods confirmed the polyphyly of the orders Ophiacanthida and Amphilepidia. At family and genus level, Ophiuridae, Ophionotus and Ophioplinthus were not monophyletic. The most notable exception was that the NTE phylogeny showed low variation of branch length. NTE dataset generated younger age for most lower-level nodes than that from PCG123 dataset. All analyses suggested that the ophiuroids radiation occurred around the Permian–Triassic mass extinction event, and the divergence time of the deep-sea lineages was during the Cretaceous.  相似文献

Adaptational Significance of the Patterns of Ophiuroid Development   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
There is only limited information on ophiuroid developmentalpatterns, larvae being known for only 4% of the 2000 livingophiuroids. Three modes of development are distinguished (planktotrophic,direct, abbreviated) on the basis of egg size and number, larvalform and life span, and post-larval size. This generalizationis applied to an analysis of the larval form(s) of deep-seaophiuroids and the ancestral ophiuroid larva. Quantitative informationon rate of development and reproductive period, which has beenlacking for viviparous ophiuroids, is presented for Axiognathus( = Amphipholis) squamatus on the basis of original size-frequencydata. Reproduction is seasonal in the population studied anddevelopment to metamorphosis takes no longer than for planktotrophicspecies though the brooding period ranges from 3 to 7 months.Additional data indicate post-larvae of planktotrophic specieshave fewer arm segments than newly-hatched viviparous young,supporting the hypothesis that large size of juveniles is characteristicand selectively advantageous for viviparous ophiuroids.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect of light intensity and substratum complexity on habitat preference and displacement speed of the ophiuroid Ophiopholis aculeata. The ophiuroid strongly preferred reduced light and to a lesser extent complex substrata. Further, displacement speed increased with light intensity and decreased with substratum complexity (ophiuroids were virtually immobile on darkened complex substrata). In the field, the density of exposed ophiuroids, with the disk out of a crevice, was always low, irrespective of the intensity of solar radiation. However, the extent to which they extended their arms (to feed) was inversely related to light intensity, as the number of suspension-feeding arms was low under direct sunlight, intermediate under indirect light and high at night. Field observations showed that the response to light was not modified when UV radiation was eliminated with a filter, and a laboratory experiment showed that white light intensity alone produced patterns similar to those observed in the field. O. aculeata may reduce arm extension with increasing light intensity to reduce the threat of visual predators, whose foraging efficiency increases with light intensity. However, visual predators are rare in our study site. We hypothesize that the large-scale larval dispersion of O. aculeata (due to the long pelagic phase) prevents ophiuroids from adapting to local conditions so that its response to light reflects adaptation to visual predators in other locations.  相似文献

The rigid skeletal frameworks of two heliospongid genera from the Bethany Falls Limestone (Pennsylvanian) of Missouri provided suitable sites of attachment for other marine invertebrates in a quiet water environment. A cluster of three horn corals attached apically to one Heliospongia while it was upright. Other horn corals are in lateral contact with ?Coelocladiella fragments and may have attached to fallen specimens. The distribution of acrothoracic barnacle borings and membraniporiform bryozoans on ?Coelocladiella fragments suggest that the sponges were in an upright position when the epizoans lived. Calcareous worm tubes and shell scars of Derbyia are also associated with ?Coelocladiella. The sponges themselves became established on a soft carbonate mud bottom by growing on productacean shells and possibly fallen blades of calcareous algae. Irregularities in their form indicate that conditions were crowded on limited sites of attachment. The organisms in the assemblage are ecologically coherent and in situ. Ecological requirements of associated organisms and sponge morphologies indicate: (1) the energy of the environment was low to moderate, (2) the rate of deposition was slow and (3) the substrate was a soft carbonate mud.  相似文献

Prior to 1980, seaweed beds of western Prince Edward Island, Canada, were dominated by Chondrus crispus Stackhouse, associated with 37 other species of common algae. Furcellaria lumbricalis (Huds.) Lamour. occurred in 4.6% of the samples from the Pleasant View bed but never reached measurable levels of cover. By 1991 F. lumbricalis was reported in 67% of the samples from this bed. Furcellaria lumbricalis biomass was negatively correlated with C. crispus biomass and positively correlated with Phyllophora Grev. spp. biomass. F. lumbricalis biomass and cover peaked in subtidal areas below 4 m at 359 ± 299 SD fresh g 0.25 m–2. Harvesters avoid concentrations of F. lumbricalis, resulting in a 5% content of this species in the commercial harvest. Systematic harvesting located concentrations of F. lumbricalis in seven of 10 commercial beds. Proposed causes for change in species dominance from C. crispus to F. lumbricalis range from general environmental change, natural succession to excessive human perturbation.  相似文献

Echinoderms are characterized by a calcite endoskeleton with a unique microstructure, which is optimized for multiple functions. For instance, some light-sensitive ophiuroids (Ophiuroidea) and asteroids (Asteroidea) possess skeletal plates with multi-lens arrays that are thought to act as photosensory organs. The origins of these lens-like microstructures have long been unclear. It was recently proposed that the complex photosensory systems in certain modern ophiuroids and asteroids could be traced back to at least the Late Cretaceous (ca. 79 Ma). Here, we document similar structures in ophiuroids and asteroids from the Early Cretaceous of Poland (ca. 136 Ma) that are approximately 57 million years older than the oldest asterozoans with lens-like microstructures described thus far. We use scanning electron microscopy, synchrotron tomography, and electron backscatter diffraction combined with focused ion beam microscopy to describe the morphology and crystallography of these structures in exceptional detail. The results indicate that, similar to Recent light-sensitive ophiuroids, putative microlenses in Cretaceous ophiuroids and asteroids exhibit a shape and crystal orientation that would have minimized spherical aberration and birefringence. We suggest that these lens-like microstructures evolved by secondary deposition of calcite on pre-existing porous tubercles that were already present in ancestral Jurassic forms.  相似文献

The preservation of non-mineralized tissues in the fossil record is extremely rare. The Lower Devonian Hunsrück Slate of Germany has long been known for the preservation of non-mineralized tissues in pyrite but whether or not these remnants represent true soft tissues has been questioned. This is especially true for struetures visible only on radiographs that are too delicate for excavation by traditional methods. Here we report the discovery of well-preserved pyritized tube feet in six fully prepared specimens of the protasterid brittle starBundenbachia beneckei from the Hunsrück Slate. This discovery represents the first report of fossilized ophiuroid tube feet in the fossil record. The successful excavation of the delicate tube feet was made possible by improved airbrasive techniques developed by German fossil collectors. The relatively large size of the fossil tube feet inBunden-bachia beneckei is consistent with earlier inferences on size based on the presence of large podial basins. Protasterid ophiuroids lack the specialized arm musculature and articulations that provide increased flexibility and strength to the arms of modern ophiuroids with typically reduced tube feet. How-ever, tube foot form and perhaps function inBundenbachia might have been similar to those of living asteroids in which large tube feet are used primarily for locomotion and food-manipulation thus compensating for a lack of specialized arm musculature and articulation. Hence, feeding and life mode of protasterid ophiuroids was not necessarily limited to sedentary, infaunal microphagy as traditionally suggested. The taphonomy of three Middle Triassic (Muschelkalk) monospecific ophiuroid taphocoenoses, comprising Aspiduriella similis (Eck), from different regions in Poland (Holy Cross Mountains, Upper Silesia and North-Sudetic Basin) has been investigated. The majority of specimens (88.5% of a total of 428 individuals) are partially disarticulated, having only proximal and median portions of their arms preserved (Taphonomic Group 2). Pristine specimens, with only faint traces of disarticulation (Taphonomic Group 1), as well as those that preserve the disc only, or which have only proximal stumps of arms preserved (Taphonomic Group 3), are much rarer (6.5% and 5%, respectively). Moreover, most specimens (76.4%) are oral side up. Only 19.2% of specimens are preserved in life position, and a small fraction (4.4%) are preserved oblique to bedding. All ophiuroids studied occur in thin, pelitic layers devoid of any trace fossils. Associated body fossils, such as bivalves, gastropods or crinoids, are very rare. Taking into account ophiuroid taphonomy, as well as sedimentological characteristics of the thin layer (burial layer), it is clear that all assemblages were transported prior to burial. The predominance of articulated skeletons indicates that the burial event (obrution event) was not only rapid, but also single – subsequent events would have destroyed the previously buried ophiuroids. Storm-related resuspension of fine-grained material from nearshore environments which covered the ophiuroids is the most likely burial agent. The fact that in all regions the ophiuroid taphofacies studied is identical suggests that the three assemblages underwent the same burial history, and that a single event might have been responsible.     Muschelkalk , ophiuroids , Poland , taphonomy , Triassic .  相似文献

Illus. 1959.—Arthroxylon resinaceum sp. nov. is described from 3 specimens found in a coal-ball collected at West Mineral, Kansas. The tracheids have 1 or 2 rows of pits on the radial walls and the pith cells adjacent to the protoxylem canals are filled with brown contents. The Keota site, in the Middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) Keota Sandstone Member, McAlester Formation (Krebs Group) of Haskell County, Oklahoma, yields an extensive ichnofossil assemblage of arthropod trackways, insect resting traces, arthropod feeding and grazing traces, fish swimming traces, and tetrapod footprints. This ichnofossil assemblage occurs in a 0.8 to 1.5-m-thick unit of thinly laminated and ripple-laminated sandstone at the base of the Keota Sandstone Member that is interpreted as a tidal flat sandstone. The arthropod traces are assigned to the ichnotaxa Diplichnites gouldi Gevers types A and B, Diplopodichnus biformis Brady, Paleohelcura tridactyla Gilmore, Tonganoxichnus buildexensis Mángano, Buatois, Maples and Lanier, Gordia marina Emmons, cf. Cochlichnus sp. and Treptichnus bifurcus Miller. The fish swimming traces are assigned to Undichna britannica Higgs, and the tetrapod tracks to Notalacerta ichnosp. and Pseudobradypus ichnosp. The Keota ichnofossil assemblage thus documents the first North American Pennsylvanian record of Paleohelcura tridactyla and the first record of Pseudobradypus from the western United States. This ichnofossil assemblage also provides compelling evidence of a freshwater habitat in a tidal flat setting during deposition of the fossil-bearing sandstone at the Keota site. Indeed, the Keota ichnofossil assemblage is characteristic of a Carboniferous-Permian Tonganoxichnus assemblage that identifies nonmarine tidal flat settings.  相似文献
