The canine cervical trachea has been used for numerous studies regarding the neural control of tracheal smooth muscle. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether there is lateral dominance by either the left or right vagal innervation of the canine cervical trachea. In anesthetized dogs, pressure in the cuff of the endotracheal tube was used as an index of smooth muscle tone in the trachea. After establishment of tracheal tone, as indicated by increased cuff pressure, either the right or left vagus nerve was sectioned followed by section of the contralateral vagus. Sectioning the right vagus first resulted in total loss of tone in the cervical trachea, whereas sectioning the left vagus first produced either a partial or no decrease in tracheal tone. After bilateral section of the vagi, cuff pressure was recorded during electrical stimulation of the rostral end of the right or left vagus. At the maximum current strength used, stimulation of the left vagus produced tracheal constriction that averaged 28.5% of the response to stimulation of the right vagus (9.0 +/- 1.8 and 31.6 +/- 2.5 mmHg, respectively). In conclusion, the musculature of cervical trachea in the dog appears to be predominantly controlled by vagal efferents in the right vagus nerve.  相似文献

Various methods have been used in the past to assess the implication of oxygen free radicals (OFR) in ischemia-reperfusion-induced cardiac injury. Luminol-enhanced tert-butyl-initiated chemiluminescence in cardiac tissue reflects oxidative stress and is a very sensitive method. It was used to elucidate the role of OFR in cardiac injury due to ischemia and reperfusion. Studies were conducted on perfused isolated rabbit hearts in three groups (n = 8 in each): I, control; II, submitted to global ischemia for 30 min; III, submitted to ischemia for 30 min followed by reperfusion for 60 min. The heart tissue was then assayed for chemiluminescence (CL); content of malondialdehyde (MDA), an indicator of OFR-induced cardiac injury; and activity of tissue levels of antioxidants [superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px)].The control values for left and right ventricular CL and malondialdehyde were 81.1 ± 15.4 (S.E.) and 182.4 ± 50.3 (S.E.), mv-min-mg protein–1; and 0.024 ± 0.006 (S.E.) and 0.324 ± 0.005 (S.E.) nmoles-mg protein–1 respectively. Ischemia produced an increase in the cardiac CL (3.3 to 4.4 fold) and MDA content (2 to 2.6 fold). Reperfusion following ischemia also produced similar changes in CL and MDA content. The control values for activity of left ventricular SOD, catalase, and GSH-Px were 45.77 ± 1.73 (S.E.) U-mg protein–1 5.35 ± 0.51 (S.E.) K-10–3-sec–1-mg protein–1, and 77.50 ± 7.70 (S.E.) nmoles NADPH-min–1-mg protein–1 respectively. Activities of SOD and catalase decreased during ischemia but were similar to control values in ischemic-reperfused hearts. The GSH-Px activity of left ventricle was unaffected by ischemia, and ischemia-reperfusion. GSH-Px activity of the right ventricle increased with ischemia, and ischemic-reperfusion.These results indicate that cardiac tissue chemiluminescence would be a useful and sensitive tool for the detection of oxygen free radical-induced cardiac injury.  相似文献

The effect of an acute temperature increase on the control of the heart of the Antarctic teleost Pagothenia borchgrevinki was examined. Heart rate was thermally independent over the range −1.2°C to 3°C, although increasing the temperature from −1.2°C to 3°C elicited a decrease in ventral aortic pressure. Administration of the muscarinic receptor antagonist atropine and the β-adrenoreceptor antagonist sotalol abolished the thermal independence of heart rate, with heart rate increasing at Q10=2. As temperature was increased from −1.2°C to 3°C, cholinergic tone on the heart also increased, from 44.6±4.2% to 70.0±8.4%. At the same time the adrenergic tone increased from 35.5±3.3% to 43.0±3.1%, but the effect on the heart was masked by the increase of cholinergic tone, leading to the thermal independence of heart rate.  相似文献

For the first time there were recorded electrocardiograms (ECG) from the trunk surface of larva of the Arctic lamprey Lethenteron japonicum (ammocaete). At the heart rate of 90 ± 16 contr./min, duration of the peak P amounted to 72 ± 8 ms, of the interval P-Q (R), 144 ± 18, of the initial ventricular complex, 61 ± 5, and of the interval Q (R)-T, 390 ± 40 ms. It was shown that rhythm variability was lower in animals with a high heart rate. Amplitude of ECG peaks in standard leads was low and varied significantly in different individuals (that of the peak R varied from 15 to 140 µV). The size of the heart is possible to be one of the factors determining the low amplitude of ECG peaks in the ammocaete. Cardiac index in this animals was low—0.09%.Translated from Zhurnal Evolyutsionnoi Biokhimii i Fiziologii, Vol. 41, No. 1, 2005, pp. 58–61.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Prosheva.  相似文献

Vasodepressor reactions were induced in 27 rats by a combination of inferior vena caval occlusion and an infusion of isoproterenol. A vasodepressor reaction was defined as paradoxical heart rate slowing during inferior vena caval occlusion. The R-R intervals were measured at 5-s intervals before, during, and after 60 s of inferior vena caval occlusion. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of the right and left vagus nerve and the right and left stellate ganglia in this reflex. Under control conditions inferior vena caval occlusion accelerated the rate (R-R, -15.9 +/- 0.9 ms). During an infusion of isoproterenol (0.5-1.0 micrograms.min-1), inferior vena caval occlusion produced paradoxical rate slowing, i.e., a vasodepressor reaction (R-R, +75.0 +/- 2.2 ms). The vasodepressor reaction was examined during inferior vena caval occlusion and isoproterenol under the following additional states: atropine methyl bromide or right vagotomy did not alter the reaction; left vagotomy eliminated the reaction; and right or left stellectomy greatly reduced the vasodepressor reaction. We conclude the following: (1) left vagal afferents mediate the vasodepressor reaction; (2) cardiac sympathetic fibers participate in the vasodepressor reaction by withdrawing efferent tone through the right stellate ganglion, and by generating the afferent signal, which triggers the vasodepressor reaction through the left stellate ganglion.  相似文献

This study investigated whether each part of the heart is evenly innervated by the left or right vagus and observed the mechanism of compensatory recovery after unilateral cervical vagotomy. HR, BP, LVSP and +/-dp/dt max all decreased one week after left vagotomy, whereas only BP and -dp/dt max decreased one week after right vagotomy. Western blot analyses revealed that the expression of M(2) receptors in the left atrium and left ventricle was upregulated after subacute (1 week) left/right vagotomy. However, significantly more cholinesterase-positive nerves in LV and RV were seen one week after unilateral vagotomy compared to the sham-operated group. In addition, baroreflex sensitivity was increased after subacute right vagotomy. The decreasing effects of ACh (0.5 microg/kg) on LVSP and +/-dp/dt max (but not on HR and BP) were facilitated by subacute unilateral vagotomy. Our present experiments indicate that 1) the working myocardium is innervated bilaterally by the vagus, 2) ventricular contractility is influenced more by denervation of the left than the right vagus and 3) up-regulation of M(2) muscarinic receptors in the left heart, increase of cholinergic nerves, and high baroreflex sensitivity could be involved in the mechanism of compensatory hemodynamic recovery via contralateral vagus overactivity, thereby amplifying contralateral vagal activity and decreasing cardiac contractility.  相似文献

Development, survival and fecundity for Scatella (Teichomyza) fusca Maquart (Diptera: Ephydridae) were studied at 20 ± 1 °C and 85 ± 10% r.h. Mean (± S.E.) developmental times of eggs, larvae and pupae were 4.0 ± 0.06, 14.9 ± 0.19 and 14.6 ± 0.11 days, respectively, the mean (± S.E.) survival of the original egg cohort to the start of larval, pupal and adult stage being 77.2 ± 3.2%, 54.5 ± 2.6% and 47.9 ± 3.5%, respectively. Females and males displayed approximately straight survivorship curves during adult life, implying constant mortality rates. Mean (± S.E.) adult longevity was 41.6 ± 2.98 days for females and 51.2 ± 3.91 days for males. Assuming a stable age distribution the population consisted of 56% eggs, 31% larvae, 6% pupae and 7% adults. Oviposition peaked when females were 25 days old, and the highest reproductive values (RVx) (mean ± S.E.) ranged from 129.1 ± 7.57 to 138.5 ± 6.83 for individuals 17–27 days old. A female deposited a mean (± S.E.) of 614.7 ± 35.9 female eggs over a maximum life span of 93 days. The basic reproductive rate (R 0) (mean ± S.E.) was 173.0 ± 14.2 female offspring per female and the intrinsic rate of natural increase of female individuals (r) (mean ± S.E.) was 0.088 ± 0.001 day-1. The mean (± S.E.) generation time (T) was 57.8 ± 0.78 days. In cultures with equal numbers of first instar S. fusca larvae and predacious third instar larvae of Hydrotaea aenescens (synonymous Ophyra aenescens) Wiedemann, mean (± S.E.) survival to the adult stage of S. fusca (16.7 ± 8.8%) was significantly lower than in controls with S. fusca alone (58.3 ± 7.4%). The potential significance of predation by H. aenescens on S. fusca in pig farms is discussed.  相似文献

Crohn’s disease (CD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) involve brain-gut dysfunctions where vagus nerve is an important component. The aim of this work was to study the association between vagal tone and markers of stress and inflammation in patients with CD or IBS compared to healthy subjects (controls). The study was performed in 73 subjects (26 controls, 21 CD in remission and 26 IBS patients). The day prior to the experiment, salivary cortisol was measured at 8∶00 AM and 10∶00 PM. The day of the experiment, subjects completed questionnaires for anxiety (STAI) and depressive symptoms (CES-D). After 30 min of rest, ECG was recorded for heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. Plasma cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine, TNF-alpha and IL-6 were measured in blood samples taken at the end of ECG recording. Compared with controls, CD and IBS patients had higher scores of state-anxiety and depressive symptomatology. A subgroup classification based on HRV-normalized high frequency band (HFnu) as a marker of vagal tone, showed that control subjects with high vagal tone had significantly lower evening salivary cortisol levels than subjects with low vagal tone. Such an effect was not observed in CD and IBS patients. Moreover, an inverse association (r = −0.48; p<0.05) was observed between the vagal tone and TNF-alpha level in CD patients exclusively. In contrast, in IBS patients, vagal tone was inversely correlated with plasma epinephrine (r = −0.39; p<0.05). No relationship was observed between vagal tone and IL-6, norepinephrine or negative affects (anxiety and depressive symptomatology) in any group. In conclusion, these data argue for an imbalance between the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and the vagal tone in CD and IBS patients. Furthermore, they highlight the specific homeostatic link between vagal tone and TNF-alpha in CD and epinephrine in IBS and argue for the relevance of vagus nerve reinforcement interventions in those diseases.  相似文献

The delay τ between rising systolic blood pressure (SBP) and baroreflex bradycardia has been found to increase when vagal tone is low. The α(2)-agonist clonidine increases cardiac vagal tone, and this study tested how it affects τ. In eight conscious supine human volunteers clonidine (6 μg/kg po) reduced τ, assessed both by cross correlation baroreflex sensitivity and sequence methods (both P < 0.05). Experiments on urethane-anaesthetized rats reproduced the phenomenon and investigated the underlying mechanism. Heart rate (HR) responses to increasing SBP produced with an arterial balloon catheter showed reduced τ (P < 0.05) after clonidine (100 μg/kg iv). The central latency of the reflex was unaltered, however, as shown by the unchanged timing with which antidromically identified cardiac vagal motoneurons (CVM) responded to the arterial pulse. Testing the latency of the HR response to brief electrical stimuli to the right vagus showed that this was also unchanged by clonidine. Nevertheless, vagal stimuli delivered at a fixed time in the cardiac cycle (triggered from the ECG R-wave) slowed HR with a 1-beat delay in the baseline state but a 0-beat delay after clonidine (n = 5, P < 0.05). This was because clonidine lengthened the diastolic period, allowing the vagal volleys to arrive at the heart just in time to postpone the next beat. Calculations indicate that naturally generated CVM volleys in both humans and rats arrive around this critical time. Clonidine thus reduces τ not by changing central or efferent latencies but simply by slowing the heart.  相似文献

The occurrence of summer mortalities of the commercially important Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, has increased in recent years. These mortality events occur during the late summer when water temperatures are at their highest. Many theories have been proposed concerning the causes including reproductive stress, environmental stress, disease, or synergistic interactions of these factors. C. gigas are grown intertidally and are exposed to the air (emersed) for hours at a time. These organisms can experience extreme changes in temperature during the course of a day. An oyster closed during emersion depletes the oxygen stores to near zero within the shell and builds up CO2 causing a decrease in tissue pH. The focus of this study is to determine the respiratory (pH, Po2, Pco2 and total CO2) and immune responses of oysters exposed to air at normal seasonal temperatures, and to determine whether these stresses associated with emersion inhibit the immune system of the oyster and contribute to the summer mortalities. The respiratory variables of the hemolymph of oysters submerged at 18 °C (pH = 7.52 ± 0.04 S.E.M., Po2 = 7.09 ± 0.53 S.E.M. kPa and Pco2 = 0.20 ± 0.03 S.E.M. kPa) varied significantly from oysters emersed for four hours at 22°C (pH = 7.11 ± 0.03 S.E.M., Po2 = 3.83 ± 0.15 S.E.M. kPa, Pco2 = 0.36 ± 0.03 S.E.M. kPa) and those emersed for four hours at 30 °C (pH = 6.84 ± 0.02 S.E.M., Po2 = 3.10 ± 0.12 S.E.M. kPa, Pco2 = 1.31 ± 0.06 S.E.M. kPa). The ability of hemocytes to kill the bacterium Vibrio campbellii was assessed using an in vitro assay to generate a killing index. There was no significant difference in the killing index between pH treatment groups (p = 0.856): at pH 7.6 killing index = 50.2% ± 2.33 S.E.M., at pH 6.6 killing index = 52.3% ± 3.67 S.E.M.. Temperature was the only factor to significantly affect the killing indices among temperature and oxygen treatment groups. The killing index was lowest (29.3% ± 3.25 S.E.M.) at 30 °C and 7% oxygen, simulating in vivo oxygen pressure in well-aerated conditions and 30 °C and 3% oxygen, simulating in vivo oxygen pressure in hypoxia (30.5% ± 3.25 S.E.M.), compared with the index in 7% oxygen at low temperature (18 °C) (44.4% ± 4.50 S.E.M.) or compared with low oxygen (3%) at low temperature (18 °C) (39.7% ± 2.51 S.E.M.). The seasonal and diurnal rise in temperature may, therefore, be an important factor contributing to summer mortalities of C. gigas.  相似文献

SOC, a fungal growth medium composed of SolrythR, oxgall, and caffeic acid, was evaluated as a medium to provide rapid, differential identification of Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans. Using a variety of common isolation media to produce the yeast inocula, the germ tube methods tested ranked in the following order of decreasing sensitivity: SOC (97%±1), serum (92%±5), rabbit coagulase plasma with EDTA in combination with tryptic soy broth (89%±5), TOC (89%±6), and rabbit coagulase plasma with EDTA (83%±4). In chlamydospore production, SOC also proved to be the most sensitive after 24 h incubation: SOC (96%±2), TOC (80%±2), and cornmeal-Tween 80 agar (14%±3). Other medically important yeasts showed normal patterns of growth within 24 h on SOC, thus assisting in their identification.Eighty strains of Cryptococcus neoformans showed characteristic brown pigmentation on SOC and TOC within 18 h, while all other species of the genus Cryptococcus and 229 Candida isolates did not show a change in pigmentation.  相似文献

Summary Cinefilms of unconstrained P. vulgaris at 17°C were taken at a low magnification (2x) and 120–200 fps to analyze body movements during swimming and escape responses mediated by movements of the 12 lateral, bladelike appendages or paddles. Cinefilms of partially constrained P. vulgaris and P. dolichoptera at 16°C were taken at a higher magnification (10x) and 300 fps, using interference contrast optics, to resolve paddle movements during escape responses. When swimming, P. vulgaris moved at a velocity of 0.348±0,025 (S.E.) mm·s-1 (2.64 body lenghs·s-1), having a Reynolds number of 0.05. During escape responses, P. vulgaris traveled 1.947±0.124 (S.E.) mm (15 body lengths) during 0.0564±0.0038 (S.E.) s, continuously moving at a velocity of 35.7±1.2 (S.E.) mm·s-1 (270 body lengths·s-1) and having a Reynolds number of 5. During these responses, P. vulgaris tumbled sinuously but mostly-88.9±2.3 (S.E.) %-in a constant direction; the angular change in direction from one frame to the next was 28±2 (S.E.) degrees, but the sign of the change in direction frequently alternated. Escape responses are caused by 1–3 cycles of paddle movements. In each cycle, the rigid paddles move up asynchronously until they are all directly overhead, and then they move downwards to their original resting positions, again asynchronously. Polyarthra's body moves along the flight path during all phases of this cycle. A single cycle may take as little as 26 ms, 13 ms for the paddles to elevate and 13 ms for them to descend. The asynchronous upward and downward movements of each of the 12 paddles explain why Polyarthra's body tumbles continuously through its low Reynolds number, viscous environment. Escape responses generally were initiated by contact with another rotifer. In one P. dolichoptera response, the time lag between such contact and the initiation of paddle elevation was about 7 ms. The very short lag time, great velocity, considerable displacement, and unpredictable directionality of Polyarthra's escape response make it a very effective defense against capture by some invertebrate predators.  相似文献

The potential of using radiography for measuring feed intake in southern rock lobster Jasus edwardsii (Hutton) was evaluated. Lobsters (14-40 g) readily consumed feeds containing radio-opaque marker (400—450 μm). Marker particles were clearly identified in the stomach 90 min after feeding enabling feed intake to be estimated. Initially low estimates (15±17%; mean±S.D.) of feed intake (expressed as percentage of gravimetric estimates) were recorded due to loss of markers prior to ingestion. Radiographic estimates improved (100±23%; mean±S.D.) when changes to pellet diameter (1.5 mm), moisture content (11%) and binding agent (alginate) were made. Thus, estimates were dependent on pellet diameter and resistance to fragmentation prior to ingestion. To test for the presence of feeding hierarchies in groups of lobsters an experiment was conducted to examine the effect of ration level (high ration: 2.0% BW day−1 and low ration: 0.2% BW day−1) on intra-individual (measured as coefficient of variation for feed intake: CVC) and inter-individual variation (measured as mean share of the group meal: MSM%). There was a significant (P<0.05) negative correlation between CVC and MSM% for the low ration treatments which indicated that small lobsters (CVC=114±19% and MSM%=22±10%: mean±S.D.) were less successful than large lobsters (CVC 44±11% and MSM%=41±13%: mean±S.D.) at obtaining feed. This may be indicative of the formation of feeding hierarchies.  相似文献

Cardiac arrest caused by startling stimuli, such as visual and vibration stimuli, has been reported in some animals and could be considered as an extraordinary case of bradycardia and defined as reversible missed heart beats. Variability of the heart rate is established as a balance between an autonomic system, namely cholinergic vagus inhibition, and excitatory adrenergic stimulation of neural and hormonal action in teleost. However, the cardiac arrest and its regulating nervous mechanism remain poorly understood. We show, by using electrocardiogram (ECG) data loggers, that cardiac arrest occurs in chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) at the moment of gamete release for 7.39±1.61 s in females and for 5.20±0.97 s in males. The increase in heart rate during spawning behavior relative to the background rate during the resting period suggests that cardiac arrest is a characteristic physiological phenomenon of the extraordinarily high heart rate during spawning behavior. The ECG morphological analysis showed a peaked and tall T-wave adjacent to the cardiac arrest, indicating an increase in potassium permeability in cardiac muscle cells, which would function to retard the cardiac action potential. Pharmacological studies showed that the cardiac arrest was abolished by injection of atropine, a muscarinic receptor antagonist, revealing that the cardiac arrest is a reflex response of the parasympathetic nerve system, although injection of sotalol, a β-adrenergic antagonist, did not affect the cardiac arrest. We conclude that cardiac arrest during gamete release in spawning release in spawning chum salmon is a physiological reflex response controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system. This cardiac arrest represents a response to the gaping behavior that occurs at the moment of gamete release.  相似文献

Bullfrogs, Lithobathes catesbeianus, bearing a femoral artery cannula were held at 3 temperatures (10, 20 and 30 °C) for 24 h. Changes in heart rate were recorded before and after injection of cholinergic and adrenergic antagonists. Normal heart rate doubled for each temperature increment. Adrenergic tone on the heart varied around 20% at all 3 temperatures but cholinergic tone increased from −5% to 10% between 10 and 30 °C. In contrast, cholinergic tone increased from 75% at 5 °C to 329% at 25 °C in Xenopus laevis. Injection of the neural tracer True Blue into the cervical vagus of the bullfrog revealed a single location for vagal preganglionic neurons (VPN) in the dorsal vagal motor nucleus (DVN), while Xenopus had 30% of its VPN in a ventro-lateral group outside the DVN. Broader comparative studies have suggested that differences in the extent of vagal tone may relate to the location of VPN in the brainstem and this may be the case in these amphibians.  相似文献

The anatomy of the caudal heart of Myxine glutinosa is reviewed and a hypothesis of its mode of action is outlined. It is a double-action force pump in which each stroke produces two results, the filling of one chamber and the emptying of the other. This hypothesis is supported by records of blood pressures (a) in the caudal vein, which show elevations of pressure as the left and right chambers are alternately emptied, and (b) in the subcutaneous sinuses, which show alternating reductions of pressure corresponding to the aspiration phases of the left and right sides. The caudal heart shows a diminishing sequence of bursts of activity following each bout of swimming; blood continues to flow slowly through the resting caudal heart. The conclusion is drawn that it is an auxillary venous pump, and it is compared with the lymph heart in the tail of teleost fish.  相似文献

The evoked potentials produced by the irritation of the heart sinus node zone in the brain cortex and bradycardia have been registered in 5 to 40-min ischemia of the left and right ventricular myocardium during the electrical stimulation of the vagus. Restricted cardiac afferentation and the heart escape from vagus influences have been revealed at the early stages of ischemia.  相似文献

A system for in vivo, automatic, continuous monitoring of organ extracellular ascorbic acid in anesthetized rat is described. This system involves microdialysis perfusion and a LC system equipped with an electrochemical detector. Microdialysate, eluted from a microdialysis probe implanted in the brain cortex or in the left ventricular myocardium of anesthetized rats was collected in the sample loop of an on-line injector for direct injection onto the LC system. This automated method provides a shortened sample processing time. This system was utilized to investigate the effect of cerebral ischemia on cortex extracellular ascorbic acid and the effect of myocardial ischemia on left ventricular myocardium extracellular ascorbic acid in anesthetized rats. Basal ascorbic acid concentrations in the cortex and left ventricular myocardium ranged from 9.7 to 15.4 μM (mean±S.D. 12.7±2.5 μM from the results of eight rats) and from 9.3 to 36.0 μM (mean±S.D., 24.3±8.9 μM from the results of twelve rats), respectively. Cerebral ischemia significantly elevated ascorbic acid levels in the cortex extracellular space, while myocardial ischemia did not significantly alter ascorbic acid levels in the left ventricular myocardium extracellular space.  相似文献

Background

Tinnitus is defined as an intrinsic sound perception that cannot be attributed to an external sound source. Distress in tinnitus patients is related to increased beta activity in the dorsal part of the anterior cingulate and the amount of distress correlates with network activity consisting of the amygdala-anterior cingulate cortex-insula-parahippocampus. Previous research also revealed that distress is associated to a higher sympathetic (OS) tone in tinnitus patients and tinnitus suppression to increased parasympathetic (PS) tone.

Methodology

The aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between tinnitus distress and the autonomic nervous system and find out which cortical areas are involved in the autonomic nervous system influences in tinnitus distress by the use of source localized resting state electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings and electrocardiogram (ECG). Twenty-one tinnitus patients were included in this study.

Conclusions

The results indicate that the dorsal and subgenual anterior cingulate, as well as the left and right insula are important in the central control of heart rate variability in tinnitus patients. Whereas the sympathovagal balance is controlled by the subgenual and pregenual anterior cingulate cortex, the right insula controls sympathetic activity and the left insula the parasympathetic activity. The perceived distress in tinnitus patients seems to be sympathetically mediated.  相似文献
