Seven narwhals (Monodon monoceros) were instrumented with satellite transmitters in Tremblay Sound, northeast Canada in August 1999. The whales were tracked for 5-218 days with positions received until 17 March 2000. All whales stayed in the fjord system where they were tagged until the end of August. Three whales went northwest visiting adjacent fjords before moving south, together with the three other whales, along the east coast of Baffin Island. The narwhals arrived on the wintering ground in northern Davis Strait in late October. Speed and range of movements declined once the wintering ground was reached. Dive depths increased from summer to autumn, and reached at least 1,500 m. Late summer and winter kernel home ranges were approximately 3,400 km2 and 12,000 km2, respectively. The relative abundance of whales on the wintering ground was 936 narwhals. Assuming that the home range defines the winter distribution of the stock, an estimated 5,348 narwhals (corrected for perception and availability bias) were present in this area.  相似文献

Humpback whales were instrumented with satellite transmitters off the western Antarctic Peninsula in January of 2004–2006 to examine their movement patterns and habitat use. Whales were tracked from 4 to 80 days (mean = 36.5 days). Distance and travel rate estimates for nine individuals ranged from 223 to 4,356 km and from 17 to 75 km/day, respectively. Considerable individual variation was observed in direction, speed and range of movements. The overall pattern was characterized by short- and long-distance movements between presumed foraging areas with relatively short residency times. Travel rates were lower at these sites, characterized by erratic movements, than during traveling between them. Area usage for six individuals based on the 95% fixed kernel home range with least squares cross-validation ranged from 2,771 to 172,356 km2. The management boundary between the feeding grounds associated with Breeding Stocks G and A needs revision, as current available data suggest it should be located to the east of 50°W. This study is the first to present detailed information on the movements of humpback whales in the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Killer whales (Orcinus orca) occur in the eastern Canadian Arctic during the open-water season, but their seasonal movements in Arctic waters and overall distribution are poorly understood. During August 2009, satellite transmitters were deployed onto two killer whales in Admiralty Inlet, Baffin Island, Canada. A whale tracked for 90 days remained in Admiralty and Prince Regent Inlets from mid-August until early October, when locations overlapped aggregations of marine mammal prey species. While in Admiralty and Prince Regent Inlets, the whale traveled 96.1 ± 45.3 km day−1 (max 162.6 km day−1) and 120.1 ± 44.5 km day−1 (max 192.7 km day−1), respectively. Increasing ice cover in Prince Regent Inlet in late September and early October was avoided, and the whale left the region prior to heavy ice formation. The whale traveled an average of 159.4 ± 44.8 km day−1 (max 252.0 km day−1) along the east coast of Baffin Island and into the open North Atlantic by mid-November, covering over 5,400 km in approximately one month. This research marks the first time satellite telemetry has been used to study killer whale movements in the eastern Canadian Arctic and documents long-distance movement rarely observed in this species.  相似文献

During January/February 2006, we satellite-tracked two different ecotypes of killer whales (Orcinus orca) in McMurdo Sound, Ross Sea, Antarctica, using surface-mounted tags attached with sub-dermal darts. A single Type B whale (pinniped prey specialist), tracked for 27 days, traveled an average net distance of 56.8 ± 32.8 km day−1, a maximum of 114 km day−1, and covered an estimated area of 49,351 km2. It spent several days near two large emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) colonies, a potential prey item for this form. By contrast, four Type C killer whales (fish prey specialists) tracked for 7–65 days, traveled an average net distance of 20 ± 8.3 km day−1, a maximum of 56 net km day−1, and covered an estimated area of only 5,223 km2. These movement patterns are consistent with those of killer whale ecotypes in the eastern North Pacific where mammal-eating ‘transients’ travel widely and are less predictable in their movements, and fish-eating ‘residents’ have a more localized distribution and more predictable occurrence, at least during the summer months.  相似文献

The satellite-acquired locations of 10 blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) tagged off southern California with Argos radio tags were used to identify (1) their movements during the late summer feeding season; (2) the routes and rate of travel for individuals on their southern fall migration; and (3) a possible winter calving/breeding area. Whales were tracked from 5.1 to 78.1 d and from 393 to 8,668 km. While in the Southern California Bight, most of the locations for individual whales were either clumped or zigzagged in pattern, suggesting feeding or foraging (searching for prey). Average speeds ranged from 2.4 to 7.2 km/h. One whale moved north to Cape Mendocino, and four migrated south along the Baja California, Mexico coast, two passing south of Cabo San Lucas on the same day. One of the latter whales traveled an additional 2,959 km south in 30.5 d to within 450 km of the Costa Rican Dome (CRD), an upwelling feature. The timing of this migration suggests the CRD may be a calving/breeding area for North Pacific blue whales. Although blue whales have previously been sighted in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP), this is the first evidence that whales from the feeding aggregation off California range that far south. The productivity of the CRD may allow blue whales to feed during their winter calving/breeding season, unlike gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) and humpbacks (Megaptera novaeangliae) which fast during that period.  相似文献

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) into Cockburn Sound Western Australia was quantified by applying a distributed groundwater flow model to estimate the inshore aquifer water balance. Spatially averaged SGD along the coast was estimated to be 2.5–4.8?±?0.9?m3?day?1?m?1. The range in estimated average SGD reflected low and high estimates of average groundwater recharge, which ranged from 0.13 to 0.24?m?year?1 (15–28% of average annual rainfall). The error ±0.9?m3?day?1?m?1 was calculated by assuming arbitrary ±20% errors in groundwater pumping and inflow across boundaries. SGD varied spatially along the coastal boundary due to variation in hydraulic connection between the coastal aquifers and ocean, and spatial variability in recharge, transmissivity and pumping. Under assumptions of low and high groundwater recharge, SGD along the coastline varied in the ranges 1.4–4.6?m3?day?1?m?1 and 2.4–7.9?m3?day?1?m?1, respectively.  相似文献

Two abalone species: green Haliotis fulgens and yellow Halioti corrugata represent nearly 97% of the total production in the Mexican abalone fishery. It has been assumed that abalone feed on the kelp algae Macrocystis pyrifera. Regional hatcheries use this species as a main source of natural food. M. pyrifera does not occur at the southern limit of the distribution of abalone species along the Baja California Peninsula. In this study, growth rates of juveniles H. fulgens, 17.3 ± 2.2 mm shell length and 0.4 ± 0.2 g body weight, were evaluated. Juveniles were fed with common species in the benthic environments inhabited by abalone along the western coast of Baja California during 191 days. Three diets were based on algae: palm kelp, Eisenia arborea, giant kelp, M. pyrifera and Gelidium robustum, and one on seagrass, Phyllospadix torreyi. Shell length and body growth rates varied between 21.5 μm day?1 and 2.2 mg day?1 for E. arborea and between 45.9 μm day?1 and 6.7 mg day?1 for M. pyrifera. Higher specific growth rates (SGR) in length and weight were determined for M. pyrifera: 0.2% and 0.7% day?1. Significant differences between values of juveniles fed M. pyrifera with the rest of the diets were found. The highest mortality (21%) was in juveniles fed the red algae G. robustum.  相似文献

To date, no direct measurements of primary production were taken in the Amundsen Sea, which is one of the highest primary productivity regions in the Antarctic. Phytoplankton carbon and nitrogen uptake experiments were conducted at 16 selected stations using a 13C–15N dual isotope tracer technique. We found no statistically significant depletions of major inorganic nutrients (nitrate?+?nitrite, ammonium, and silicate) although the concentrations of these nutrients were markedly reduced in the surface layer of the polynya stations where large celled phytoplankton (>20?μm) predominated (ca. 64?%). The average chl-a concentration was significantly higher at polynya stations than at non-polynya stations (p?<?0.01). Average daily carbon and nitrogen uptake rates by phytoplankton at polynya stations were 2.2?g?C?m?2?day?1 (SD?=?±1.4?g?C?m?2?day?1) and 0.9?g?N?m?2?day?1 (SD?=?±0.2?g?N?m?2?day?1), respectively, about 5–10 times higher than those at non-polynya stations. These ranges are as high as those in the Ross Sea, which has the highest productivity among polynyas in the Antarctic Ocean. The unique productivity patterns in the Amundsen Sea are likely due to differences in iron limitation, phytoplankton productivity, the timing of phytoplankton growing season, or a combination of these factors.  相似文献

The gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) is a coastal species whose nearshore summer foraging grounds off the coast of British Columbia offer an opportunity to study the fine scale foraging response of baleen whales. We explore the relationship between prey density and gray whale foraging starting with regional scale (10 km) assessments of whale density (per square kilometer) and foraging effort as a response to regional mysid density (per cubic meter), between 2006 and 2007. In addition we measure prey density at a local scale (100 m), while following foraging whales during focal surveys. We found regional mysid density had a significant positive relationship with both gray whale density and foraging effort. We identify a threshold response to regional mysid density for both whale density and foraging effort. In 2008 the lowest average local prey density measured beside a foraging whale was 2,300 mysids/m3. This level was maintained even when regional prey density was found to be substantially lower. Similar to other baleen whales, the foraging behavior of gray whales suggests a threshold response to prey density and a complex appreciation of prey availability across fine scales.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Seasonal changes in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were monitored biweekly for 1 year at seven stations in the Shetucket River watershed in eastern Connecticut, U.S.A. Nine monthly diurnal studies revealed 24-h fluctuations of up to 53% of the seasonal range of 250–2200 μm DOC. Net DOC removal along a 1.9-km stretch below a secondary sewage treatment plant (activated sludge effluent diluted to a final average volume of 1.4% in the river) ranged from 0 to 1600 and averaged 68 ± 64 mmol m?2 day?1. Removal of DOC further downstream could only be observed during a severe 3-h October storm when net uptake ranged from 16 to 92 mmol m?2 h?1, using upstream-downstream techniques. Oxygen respiration could account for about half of the net DOC removal during the October storm. Even though net uptake was somewhat greater than reported in other lotic studies, about 97% of the DOC potentially available to benthic heterotrophs was exported further downstream.  相似文献

1. To gain a better understanding of the heterotrophic nature of small headwater streams in forested landscapes we explored the spatial and temporal variability of in‐stream organic matter processes. Three methods were used to measure the benthic metabolism of different in‐stream habitats in seven streams throughout a calendar year. This allowed us to analyse the contribution of various metabolic habitats (i.e. sediment, leaf litter, cobbles) to in‐stream metabolism during a natural flow regime. Furthermore, it allowed us to define in‐stream patchiness based on functional rather than structural elements. 2. Bacterial growth, measured using a leucine assay, displayed a quadratic relationship over time with a peak in warmer months and consistently higher bacterial growth in fine depositional (3.00–710.64 mg C m?2 day?1) than coarse gravel (38.84–582.85 mg C m?2 day?1) sediments. 3. Community metabolism, measured using dissolved oxygen chambers, showed distinct diel patterns and consistently greater net daily metabolism in leaf packs (?261.76 to ?24.50 mg C m?2 day?1) than fine depositional sediments (?155.00 to ?15.56 mg C m?2 day?1). Coarse gravel sediments (?49.55 to ?16.88 mg C m?2 day?1) and cobble habitats (?151.98 to 55.38 mg C m?2 day?1) exhibited the lowest metabolic rates. Modelled whole‐stream metabolism was highly variable among streams and temporal patterns appeared driven by temperature and the relative contribution of patch configuration as a function of flow. 4. Cellulose decomposition potential showed higher rates of microbial activity in fine depositional compared to coarse gravel sediments (30.5 and 29.1 kg average cotton tensile strength loss respectively), though there were higher rates of thread loss indicative of macroinvertebrate activity in gravel compared to depositional sediment (21% and 13% average thread loss respectively), with a slight quadratic trend. The high variability among habitats, streams and over time in this integrative measure may be explained by variability in local microbial activity as well as the potential for macroinvertebrates to contribute across patches. 5. There were strong relationships among benthic processes and habitat structure, nutrient status, stream temperature and flow. Different habitats had distinct metabolic characteristics and these characteristics appear to influence stream food webs and biogeochemical cycling depending on the relative abundance of habitats. Generally, within habitat variability was less than among habitat variability and among stream variability was less than temporal variability. Hence, in terms of the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of benthic processes, these small headwater streams showed predictable metabolic patterns. However, there were few correlations between differing measures of benthic metabolism at the same patch and this suggests that caution should be taken when attempting to infer the rates of one level of metabolic activity (e.g. whole community metabolism) based on another (e.g. bacterial productivity).  相似文献

We studied reproductive success and post-breeding movements of 32 adult female emperor geese Chen canagica that were marked with satellite radio transmitters on their nesting area on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD), Alaska 2000–2004. All 16 females that failed to successfully reproduce departed the YKD and moulted remiges either on the north coast of the Chukotka Peninsula, Russia (n=15), or on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska (n=1). Of 16 females that successfully nested, one migrated to Russia following hatch whereas the remainder stayed on the YKD. While moulting on the Chukotka Peninsula, emperor geese with satellite transmitters primarily used coastal lagoons west of Kolyuchin Bay. We observed 21,150 adult-plumaged emperor geese during aerial surveys in Chukotka in 2002. Most (95%) were in the same region used by geese that had been marked with satellite transmitters in Alaska. The number of emperor geese observed in Russia was comparable to our estimate of ≥20,000 adults that either do not nest or nest unsuccessfully each year on the YKD, suggesting that most nonproductive adults, or ≥28% of the adult population departs the YKD to moult elsewhere. The number of moult migrants may be substantially higher in years of poor reproductive success or if adult-plumaged birds that are not of breeding age also leave the YKD. Moult migration of emperor geese between Alaska and Russia is likely substantially greater than previously believed. Russian moulting habitats are important to the North American population of emperor geese and events that affect survival of geese in Russia could impact population trends on the YKD. Protection of coastal lagoons on the north coast of Chukotka is warranted.  相似文献

Little information exists on the current status of Southern Hemisphere sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis). We assessed their distribution and abundance along the west coast of the Falkland Islands (southwest Atlantic) during February and March 2018, using line transect and nonsystematic surveys. Abundance estimates were generated for a single survey stratum using design- and model-based approaches. Sightings of sei whales and unidentified baleen whales (most, if not all, likely to be sei whales) occurred from the coast to the 100 m depth isobath that marked the offshore boundary of the stratum. The modeled distribution predicted highest whale densities in King George Bay and in the waters between Weddell Island and the Passage Islands. Sei whale abundance was estimated as 716 animals (CV = 0.22; 95% CI [448, 1,144]; density = 0.20 whales/km2) using the design-based approach, and 707 animals (CV = 0.11; 95% CI [566, 877]; density = 0.20 whales/km2) using the model-based approach. For sei whales and unidentified baleen whales combined, the equivalent estimates were 916 animals (CV = 0.19; 95% CI [606, 1,384]; density = 0.26 whales/km2) and 895 animals (CV = 0.074; 95% CI [777, 1,032]; density = 0.25 whales/km2). The data indicate that the Falkland Islands inner shelf region may support globally important seasonal feeding aggregations of sei whales, and potentially qualify as a Key Biodiversity Area.  相似文献

Ulva spp. are used in a wide range of commercial applications, including bioremediation, food, bioenergy, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. The sulfated polysaccharide ulvan obtained from Ulva spp. is of interest for triggering plant defenses against disease. However, the cultivation of Ulva spp. is still in its infancy. This study verified the feasibility of cultivating Ulva lactuca and Ulva flexuosa at two sites on the tropical Brazilian coast. We investigated the following: (a) methods to induce sporulation, (b) comparison of seeding ropes inoculated in vitro versus seeding at sea over 40 days, (c) production and harvest cycles at 15 and 30 days, (d) growth productivity of U. flexuosa at sea and in outdoor tanks, and (e) comparison of ulvan yields from biomass cultivated in tanks and the sea. High nutrient treatment was the most efficient method to induce sporulation (7,540?±?3,133 spores m?1). Sea-based cultivation of U. flexuosa was only successful at one site. Seeding of ropes in vitro was more efficient than seeding at sea (0.31?±?0.20 g m?2 day?1), and 15-day harvest cycles were most efficient (20.1?±?1.8 % day?1; 0.46?±?0.11 g m?2 day?1). Despite differences in plant growth in tanks (27.9?±?4.4 % day?1) and at sea (20.1?±?1.8 % day?1), the dry biomass and ulvan yields (17.7?±?5.0 %) did not differ between these systems. Cultivation of U. flexuosa was feasible at sea using in vitro seeding with a production cycle of 15 days in Brazilian tropical waters and tanks with high irradiance and enriched seawater.  相似文献

1. In extremely acid mining lakes, benthic filamentous green algae (Zygnemataceae, Chlorophyta) thrive as effective competitors for limited carbon (C). These algae could supply C for microbial‐mediated benthic alkalinity generation. However, biomass, productivity and impact of the acidobiontic filamentous green algae at pH ≤3 have not previously been determined. 2. Periphytic filamentous green algae was mapped by harvesting their biomass from 85 1 × 1 m quadrats in mining lake Grünewalder Lauch. Zygogonium ericetorum colonised water depths between 1.6 and 10.5 m covering 88% of total area. Biomass peaked at 5–6 m depth. Total Zygogonium biomass amounted to 72.2 t dry weight for the whole lake (0.94 km2), which corresponds to 16.1 t C and the accumulation of primary production from 2.2 years. 3. Growth of Zygogonium is moderately N, C and extremely P deficient, and seriously stressed by high rates of Fe deposition during summer. Consequently, net primary production (NPP) of Zygogonium, calculated from measured photosynthesis versus irradiance characteristics and calculated underwater irradiance (0.13 g C m?2 year?1) and in situ oxygen measurements (7.8 g C m?2 year?1), corresponds to only 0.3% and 18.1% of pelagic NPP. 4. Neither pelagic nor benthic Zygogonium primary production can supply enough C for efficient acidity removal. However, at rates of benthic NPP in summer of 21.4 mg C m?2 day?1, Zygogonium contributed 26% of the C equivalents to remove acidity associated with ferric iron, contributing at least seasonally to efficient alkalinity generation.  相似文献

We recorded the blows of gray whales during their southbound migration past central California in January 1994, 1995, and 1996, using thermal imaging sensors. For our sampling purposes, we defined day (0730–1630) and night (1630–0730) to coincide with the on/off effort periods of the visual counts being conducted concurrently. We pooled data across the three years of sampling and tested for diel variation in surfacing interval, pod size, offshore distance, migration rate, and swimming speed by comparing paired day/night means for samples collected within the respective 24-h period. We performed these tests using data from the entire migration period and then repeated the tests for samples collected prior to and after the approximate median migration date (15 January). Over the entire migration period we observed larger diurnal pod sizes (x?day= 1.75 ± 0.280, x?night= 1.63 ± 0.232) and greater diurnal offshore distances (x?day= 2.30 ± 0.328 km, x?night= 2.03 ± 0.356 km) but found no diel variation in surfacing interval. For the entire migration period, the nocturnal migration rate (average number of whales passing per hour) was higher than the diurnal rate. During the first half of the migration we detected no diel variation in pod size or surfacing interval, but diurnal offshore distances were larger than at night (x?day= 2.28 ± 0.273 km, x?night= 1.96 ± 0.318 km). Diurnal and nocturnal migration rates prior to 15 January were not different. During the second half of the migration, there was no diel variation in surfacing interval, pod size, or distance offshore, but the nocturnal migration rate was higher (28%, SE = 11.6%) than the diurnal rate. We found no diel variation in swimming speed in any comparison. We propose that later migrants socialize more during the day, which effectively slows their diurnal rate of migration relative to nocturnal rates.  相似文献

The regular sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus pallidus (G.O. Sars, 1871), is a widespread epibenthic species in high-Arctic waters. However, little is known about its distribution, standing stock, population dynamics and production. In the northern Barents Sea, S. pallidus was recorded on seabed still photographs at 10 out of 11 stations in water depths of 80–360?m. Mean abundances along photographic transects of 150–300 m length ranged between <0.1 and 14.7?ind. m?2 yielding a grand average of 3.6?ind.?m?2. The small-scale distribution along the transects was patchy, with densities varying from nil to an overall maximum of 25.5 ind. m?2, and exhibited a significant relation to the number of stones present. Sea urchin test diameters, measured on scaled photographs, extended from 7 to 90?mm. Median values at single stations varied from 14 to 46?mm, showing a significant inverse relationship to water depth. Biomass, estimated by combining photographic abundances, size frequencies and a size-mass function established with trawled specimens, ranged between <0.1 and 3.0?g ash-free dry mass m?2, averaging about 1.0?g ash free dry mass m?2. An analysis of skeletal growth bands in genital plates was carried out with 143 trawled individuals ranging in test diameter (D) from 4 to 48?mm. Assuming these bands to represent annual growth marks, the ages of the specimens analysed ranged between 3 and 42 years. A von Bertalanffy function was fitted to size-at-age data to model individual growth pattern (D?=?102.3?mm, k?=?0.011 year?1, t0?=?0.633?year). The annual mortality rate Z of the population in the northern Barents Sea was estimated from a size-converted catch curve to be 0.08 year?1. Applying the weight-specific growth rate method, the average P/B ratio and the mean annual production of this population were estimated as 0.07 year?1 and 0.076?g AFDM m?2 year?1, respectively. In conclusion, S. pallidus is characterized by slow growth, low mortality, high longevity and low productivity. Because of its relatively high biomass, it is considered to contribute significantly to total benthic standing stock and carbon flux in the study area.  相似文献

In this paper, the outdoor production of Botryococcus braunii in pilot-scale panel reactors (0.4?m3) is studied under uncontrolled conditions at a location close to the Atacama Desert (Chile). Discontinuous experiments were performed on different dates to determine the feasibility of the culture and the influence of environmental conditions on the system yield. Data showed that solar radiation is a major parameter in determining system yield, the average irradiance inside the culture determining both the growth rate and biomass productivity. A maximum specific growth rate of 0.09?day?1 and biomass productivity of 0.02?g?L?1?day?1 (dry weight) were measured in discontinuous mode, at an average irradiance of 60?μE?m?2?s?1. With respect to lipids, a productivity of 2.5?mg?L?1?day?1 was obtained under favourable growth conditions; no accumulation of lipids at the stationary phase was observed. To confirm this behaviour, a semicontinuous culture was performed at 0.04?day?1 in a larger reactor (1?m3). In this experiment, the biomass concentration and productivity was 0.3?g?L?1 and 0.015?g?L?1?day?1, respectively. The lipid content and productivity was 15.6% and 2.4?mg?L?1?day?1, respectively, the mean average irradiance inside the reactor being 60?μmol photons?m?2?s?1. The light path of the reactor determines the light availability, thus determining also the biomass concentration and productivity of the reactor once the dilution rate is fixed. Experimentally, biomass productivity of 0.015?g?L?1?day?1 was determined for a light path of 0.15?m, but this can be increased by more than three times for a light path of 0.1?m. These data confirm that this alga can be produced outdoors in a secure form, the culture yield improving when optimal conditions are applied, the data reported here establishing the starting point for the development of the process.  相似文献

Since 2007, green tides have occurred along the coast of the Yellow Sea, China. The green tide extended to 50,000 km2 (floating area) within 2–3 months and the calculated covering area was about 400 km2 in 2010. These facts implied that the growth and reproduction of the dominant species Ulva prolifera were stimulated. We observed that 1 cm2 blades (single layer) released 2.84–6.62?×?106 spores or 1.14–2.65?×?107 gametes and that 91.6–96.4 % of them germinated into younger seedlings. This means that, in theory, 1 g (fresh weight) of blades was able to produce about 2.8?×?108–2.7?×?109 new younger seedlings. From 2009 to 2011, the growth rate of green tide algae was measured in situ in enclosure experiments in Rudong coast, Jiangsu Province and the growth curve of the algae was divided into four phases: lag phase, accelerated phase, stationary phase, and decline phase. Usually, the average daily specific relative growth rate was about 23.2–23.6 % d?1 for a whole growth period, and it reached up to 56.2 % d?1 in the accelerated phase. Correspondingly, the morphology of green tide algae in enclosures also showed periodic variation as follows: blades presented new filamentous branches from old thallus in the lag phase, longer filamentous branches in the accelerated phase, tubular and cystic blades in the stationary phase, and folded blades in the decline stage. Those studies may be useful for understanding the green tide blooming mechanism.  相似文献

SWIMMING SPEEDS OF SINGING AND NON-SINGING HUMPBACK WHALES DURING MIGRATION   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Limited data exist on swimming speeds of humpback whales ( Megaptera novaeangliae ) and none on swimming speeds of singing whales during migration. We tracked humpback whales visually and acoustically during migration from the breeding grounds past our study site on the east coast of Australia (latitude 26°28'S). The mean swimming speed for whales while singing was 2.5 km/h, significantly less than for non-singing whales with a mean of 4.0 km/h but significantly greater than the mean of 1.6 km/h observed for singing whales on the Hawaiian breeding grounds. Between song sessions, there was no significant difference in speeds between whales that had been singing and other whales. Migration speeds were less for whales while singing but increased during the season. Although humpback whales can swim rapidly while singing (maximum observed 15.6 km/h), they generally do not do so, even during migration. Slower migration by singers would delay their return to the polar feeding areas and may be costly, but may be a strategy to provide access to more females.  相似文献
