The topographic relationships of the so-called “vital centres” like the spinal chord brain, heart and major blood vessels of East African game ruminants are discussed, using the impala and the buffalo as type animals for a series of diagrams. Anatomical conditions in relation to the effect of shots in the various body regions are demonstrated with the aim of reducing irresponsible and painful wounding of game animals. Investigations and diagrams are based upon material from 59 animals of 18 species; of these, 47 animals were formalin-fixed and dissected in a natural standing position.  相似文献

Goettingen minipigs are laboratory animals with an increasing demand over the last few years. At the moment, Goettingen minipigs are not selected for a low reactivity to humans and this trait is not included in the breeding programme. However, it is obvious that there is a need for genetically non-responding minipigs during handling to facilitate the treatment and restraint of the animals which is often needed in biomedical experiments. A first testing scheme was developed to evaluate the reactivity of Goettingen minipigs to humans and to analyse whether the trait reactivity to humans can be considered in the breeding programme. In this study temperament scores of this testing scheme for nine different traits from 10,033 animals collected from 2005 to 2008 were analysed. Temperament was subjectively scored on a scale from 1 to 5 while the pig is caught (C), held on the arms (A), standing in a box for weighing (W), standing on a table (T) and walking on the ground (G). The traits were a combination of these situations evaluated at three different ages (2, 4 and 6 months). Genetic parameters were estimated using bivariate models and different possible selection strategies were examined. Heritabilities were low to moderate with a range from 0.09 to 0.22 and phenotypic and genetic correlations between the nine traits were moderate to high with phenotypic correlations between 0.12 (W2 and G4) and 0.64 (W2 and A2) and genetic correlations between 0.44 (A4 and C6) and 1.00 (e.g. W2 and A4). It was shown that the highest genetic progress per year can be obtained when all nine traits are considered in the selection index. Under an economical point of view the selection on the basis of the two arm traits plus the trait W2 should be preferred.Based on a critical discussion of the explanatory power of the used scoring system a new evaluation scheme was developed. In this scheme the minipigs can be divided into responding and non-responding animals whereas the latter are desired for selection. The suggested scoring system offers better possibilities for statistical analyses. It is planned to include the selection for non-responding Goettingen minipigs in the routine breeding programme.  相似文献

This study compared estrous behavior of dairy cows kept in cubicle housing and fed a total mixed ration diet (HOUSED treatment) with that of cows kept at pasture with concentrate supplementation (PASTURE treatment). Behavior was compared both in the 48 h around standing estrus and during the standing estrus period. The 23 spring-calving Holstein-Friesians in each treatment were observed directly three times per day for nine weeks. The occurrence of nine selected behaviors associated with estrus was recorded during 20 min observation sessions. Twelve standing estrus events from each treatment were selected for analysis of the frequency of these nine behaviours over the 48 h around standing estrus. Milk progesterone profiles were used to confirm the dates of standing estrus events. Attempting to mount other cows, sniffing the anogenital region of other cows, resting the chin on other cows, receiving chin rests and head-to-head butts all showed significant changes in frequency in the 48 h around standing estrus in both treatments, reaching a peak during standing estrus (P ≤ 0.05). Mounting other cows increased significantly in the PASTURE treatment around standing estrus (P < 0.001), but not in the HOUSED treatment. The frequency of ano-genital sniffs received by the animals in the PASTURE treatment also increased significantly around standing estrus (P < 0.01) but not in the HOUSED treatment. When the animals were in standing estrus there was a significantly higher frequency of standing to be mounted in PASTURE than in HOUSED cows (median (q1, q3) PASTURE = 2.5 (1.0, 3.0), HOUSED = 0.0 (0.0, 1.0)) (P < 0.01), but no difference in the frequency of the other eight sexual behaviors recorded. HOUSED cows did not exhibit the same increase in mounting during the standing estrus period as PASTURE cows and received fewer mounts in observation sessions during standing estrus. These results have implications for the use of estrus detection systems that rely solely on mounting behavior in cubicle-housed dairy cows.  相似文献

Effect of hindlimb unweighting on tissue blood flow in the rat.   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
The purpose of this study was to characterize the distribution of blood flow in the rat during hindlimb unweighting (HU) and post-HU standing and exercise and examine whether the previously reported (Witzmann et al., J. Appl. Physiol. 54: 1242-1248, 1983) elevation in anaerobic metabolism observed with contractile activity in the atrophied soleus muscle was caused by a reduced hindlimb blood flow. After either 15 days of HU or cage control, blood flow was measured with radioactive microspheres during unweighting, normal standing, and running on a treadmill (15 m/min). In another group of control and experimental animals, blood flow was measured during preexercise (PE) treadmill standing and treadmill running (15 m/min). Soleus muscle blood flow was not different between groups during unweighting, PE standing, and running at 15 m/min. Chronic unweighting resulted in the tendency for greater blood flow to muscles composed of predominantly fast-twitch glycolytic fibers. With exercise, blood flow to visceral organs was reduced compared with PE values in the control rats, whereas flow to visceral organs in 15-day HU animals was unaltered by exercise. These higher flows to the viscera and to muscles composed of predominantly fast-twitch glycolytic fibers suggest an apparent reduction in the ability of the sympathetic nervous system to distribute cardiac output after chronic HU. In conclusion, because 15 days of HU did not affect blood flow to the soleus during exercise, the increased dependence of the atrophied soleus on anerobic energy production during contractile activity cannot be explained by a reduced muscle blood flow.  相似文献

Field potentials were recorded along radial tracks in scala tympani and scala vestibuli of the guinea-pig cochlea. A current density analysis revealed standing current density profiles that were qualitatively similar between animals and between the second and third cochlear turns. Radial standing current densities were greatest at or near the spiral ligament. All the scala vestibuli current density profiles were scaled versions of one another while the scala tympani current density profiles showed more variability. Acoustic stimuli modulated the standing current and there was a cochlear microphonic current density peak in scala tympani near the organ of Corti. The results are summarized with a current-density field line model, the key element of which is a constant current pumped into scale media by the stria vascularis. The standing potential gradients drive current from each perilymphatic chamber into the spiral ligament en route to the lateral surface of the stria vascularis. The strial current is divided between the receptor cell pathway and leakage pathways. The standing current through the leakage pathways is indirectly modulated by acoustic stimulation through the modulation of the endocochlear potential. The reciprocal modulation of current between hair cell and leakage pathways suggests that the stria vascularis maintains a constant current during acoustic stimulation. The cochlear standing current is similar to the retinal dark current in its importance for sensory transduction but the fact that the silent current is generated by the stria vascularis and not the receptor cells provides significant benefits for the detection of mechanical stimuli.  相似文献

In the experiments stick insects walk on an inclined substratesuch that the legs of one side of the body point uphill andthe legs of the other side point downhill. In this situationthe vertical axis of the body is rotated against the inclinationof the substrate as if to compensate for the effect of substrateinclination. A very small effect has been found when the experimentwas performed with animals standing on a tilted platform whichshows that the effect depends on the behavioral context. When,however, animals first walked along the inclined surface andthen, before measurement, stopped walking spontaneously, a rotationof the body has been observed similar to that in walking animals.In a second experiment it was tested whether the observed bodyrotation is caused by the change of direction of gravity vectoror by the fact that on an inclined surface gravity necessarilyhas a component pulling the body sideways. Experiments withanimals standing on horizontal ground and additional weightsapplied pulling the body to the side showed similar body rotationssupporting the latter idea. In a simulation study it could beshown that the combined activity of proportional feedback controllersin the leg joints is sufficient to explain the observed behavior.This is however only possible if the gain factors of coxa-trochanterjoint controller and of femur-tibia joint controller show aratio in the order of 1 : 0.05 to 1 : 1.8. In order to describethe behavior of animals standing on a tilted platform, a ratioof 1 : 1.7 is necessary. In walking animals, this body rotationrequires to change the trajectories of stance and swing movements.The latter have been studied in more detail. During swing, thefemur-tibia joint is more extended in the uphill legs. Conversely,the coxa-trochanter joint appears to be more elevated in thedownhill legs which compensates the smaller lift in the femur-tibiajoint. The activity of four types of sound-sensitive descending brain neurons in the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus was recorded intracellularly while animals were standing or walking on an open-loop trackball system. In a neuron with a contralaterally descending axon, the male calling song elicited responses that copied the pulse pattern of the song during standing and walking. The accuracy of pulse copying increased during walking. Neurons with ipsilaterally descending axons responded weakly to sound only during standing. The responses were mainly to the first pulse of each chirp, whereas the complete pulse pattern of a chirp was not copied. During walking the auditory responses were suppressed in these neurons. The spiking activity of all four neuron types was significantly correlated to forward walking velocity, indicating their relevance for walking. Additionally, injection of depolarizing current elicited walking and/or steering in three of four neuron types described. In none of the neurons was the spiking activity both sufficient and necessary to elicit and maintain walking behaviour. Some neurons showed arborisations in the lateral accessory lobes, pointing to the relevance of this brain region for cricket audition and descending motor control.  相似文献

The proleg withdrawal reflex in the caterpillar Manduca sexta is a robust, well-characterized system for investigating the integration of sensory information with centrally patterned behavior. The reflex is evoked by stimulating mechanosensory hairs--planta hairs--located at the tip of each proleg. We studied the expression of this reflex by combining video recordings and electromyographic recordings from the main retractor muscles of the proleg, the principal and accessory planta retractor muscles. In intact animals, the nature of the response depended on the motor context of the animal. Animals which were standing quietly showed great variability in both the kinematic properties of proleg withdrawal, and the corresponding muscle electrical activity. Animals which were hanging upside down from a wooden dowel exhibited a much faster reflex, with retraction of the proleg occurring slightly faster than in standing animals, but re-extension of the proleg to the substrate being considerably faster. In crawling animals, expression of the reflex depended on the phase of the crawling cycle during which stimulation occurred. The reflex in a given proleg was suppressed during stance phase of that proleg. During swing phase, however, planta hair stimulation evoked proleg withdrawal, resulting in an assistance reflex. In contrast. isolated abdomens showed much less variability in the reflex. A comparison of the relationship between retractor muscle activity and the resulting proleg movement showed significant correlations between both the duration of activity and the number of muscle spikes, and the size of the associated proleg withdrawal. This is a promising system in which to investigate how central neuronal circuits accomplish context-dependency of motor behavior.  相似文献

Summary We investigate a new continuous input ideal free distribution model which removes the assumption that resources are consumed as soon as they enter a patch. The model makes predictions about the standing crop of resources and allows consideration of the effects of simultaneous exploitation and interference competition. Using a group of cichlid fish competing for food items, we show that consistent with the model, standing crops can vary in continuous input situations. As predicted, higher standing crops are associated with increased intake rates. Furthermore, with greater numbers of competitors, standing crops are higher, suggesting that there is interference as well as exploitation competition in our system. An experiment to investigate the effects of fish density on the level of movement revealed that the reported interference competition could not be attributed to increased fish movement at higher density.  相似文献

Adaptive genetic variation has been thought to originate primarily from either new mutation or standing variation. Another potential source of adaptive variation is adaptive variants from other (donor) species that are introgressed into the (recipient) species, termed adaptive introgression. Here, the various attributes of these three potential sources of adaptive variation are compared. For example, the rate of adaptive change is generally thought to be faster from standing variation, slower from mutation and potentially intermediate from adaptive introgression. Additionally, the higher initial frequency of adaptive variation from standing variation and lower initial frequency from mutation might result in a higher probability of fixation of the adaptive variants for standing variation. Adaptive variation from introgression might have higher initial frequency than new adaptive mutations but lower than that from standing variation, again making the impact of adaptive introgression variation potentially intermediate. Adaptive introgressive variants might have multiple changes within a gene and affect multiple loci, an advantage also potentially found for adaptive standing variation but not for new adaptive mutants. The processes that might produce a common variant in two taxa, convergence, trans‐species polymorphism from incomplete lineage sorting or from balancing selection and adaptive introgression, are also compared. Finally, potential examples of adaptive introgression in animals, including balancing selection for multiple alleles for major histocompatibility complex (MHC), S and csd genes, pesticide resistance in mice, black colour in wolves and white colour in coyotes, Neanderthal or Denisovan ancestry in humans, mimicry genes in Heliconius butterflies, beak traits in Darwin's finches, yellow skin in chickens and non‐native ancestry in an endangered native salamander, are examined.  相似文献

Separation of particles from the suspending phase is of interest, among others, to clinical analysts. A system that enables manipulation of sub-micron sized particles in suspensions of analytical scale volume (10–50 l) using a non-cavitating ultrasonic standing wave is described. Particle suspensions, contained in glass capillary tubes of 1–2 mm internal dimension, are treated on the axis of a tubular transducer generating a radial standing wave field at 4.5 MHz. Microparticles (of average diameter range 0.3–10 m) suspended in buffer are concentrated within seconds at preferred regions separated by submillimetre distances. Concentration of suspended latex particles was inhibited in solutions containing protein at levels similar to those occurring in clinical specimens when the suspensions were sonicated in capillaries of circular cross-section. This effect was associated with acoustic streaming of the suspending fluid. Silica microparticles (more dense and less compressible than latex) could be concentrated in the presence of streaming. Latex particles concentrated readily in square cross-section capillaries where no streaming was observed. With sub-micron particles, the geometry of the sample chamber, the suspending phase composition and the size, density and compressibility of the microparticles all influence particle manipulation. The radial standing wave system has been used to enhance agglutination of antibody-coated latex microparticles in the presence of antigen allowing rapid and highly sensitive detection of clinically important biomolecules. The sensitivity of conventional diagnostic tests for microbial antigen has been improved by application of ultrasound and clinical utility has been demonstrated, in particular, for detection of meningitis-causing bacteria.  相似文献

A technique was developed for the measurement of levels of caesium radionuclides (137Cs+134Cs) in live reindeer, cattle, and sheep and in carcasses from these species. The instrument used was a sodium iodide scintillation detector coupled to a portable multi-channel analyser. Based on a combination of background measurements and measurements of impulses from animals with the detector in different anatomical positions we recommmend the following procedures: Lamb: The detector placed on os sacrum (standing animal). Reindeer: The detector placed between the hind legs (animal lying on its side). Cattle: The detector placed on the back of the standing animal, midway between os sacrum and trochanter major. Average geometrical factors for live animals were estimated. It was a linear correlation between measured activity levels in meat samples and counted impulses per sec in live animals. Geometrical factors were estimated at 95% confidence level with uncertainty between 6–14%. The detection limits varied between 50–200 Bq (becquerel)/kg in areas with ground depositions between 5–200 kBq/m2. Since the winter 1986/87 the technique has been the standard procedure for monitoring slaughter animals and carcasses for radiocaesium activity concentrations.  相似文献

The pattern of abdominal muscle use during breathing in unanesthetized dogs is unknown. Therefore, we have recorded the electromyograms of the rectus abdominis, external oblique, and transversus abdominis in eight conscious animals breathing quietly in the sitting, standing, and prone postures. During quiet breathing in the sitting posture, all animals invariably had a large amount of phasic expiratory activity in the transversus abdominis. In contrast, only four animals showed some expiratory activity in the external oblique, and only one animal had expiratory activity in the rectus abdominis. A similar pattern was observed when the animals were standing or lying prone, although the amount of expiratory activity was less in this posture. Bilateral cervical vagotomy in four animals did not affect the degree of transversus abdominis expiratory activation or the influence of posture. We conclude that in conscious dogs 1) the abdominal muscles play an important role during breathing and make spontaneous quiet expiration a very active process, 2) the transversus abdominis is the primary respiratory muscle of the abdomen, and 3) unlike in anesthetized animals, extrapulmonary receptors play a major role in promoting abdominal expiratory contraction.  相似文献

Five heifers and five lactating dairy cows were locked in adjacent stanchions and monitored continuously by human observation for 18 consecutive nights from 7:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. Total standing and lying time, number of position changes, and prevalence of bellowing was recorded. The animals were housed in stanchions for 20 hours each day and in outside lots for four hours each day. Estrus was synchronized by giving prostaglandins on Days 1 and 11. There were 16 documented estrous periods, and an increase (P < 0.05) in standing time occurred in two of 16. Similarly, an increase (P < 0.05) in number of position changes occurred in two of 16 estrous periods. Mean +/- SE standing time (during the nine-hour nightly observation period) for heifers and cows was 148 +/- 6.8 and 278 +/- 9.6 (P < 0.01) minutes, respectively. The prevalence of bellowing was very low and not always associated with estrus. These results indicate that standing time, number of position changes, and bellowing are rather weak indicators of estrus.  相似文献

Studies of the seasonal and spatial distribution of the epipelic algal standing crop and primary productivity were conducted in Marion Lake, British Columbia. Possible biological, chemical, and physical factors controlling the epipelic algal community dynamics were also investigated. The epipelic algal flora of the lake was very diverse, however, it can be generally considered as acidophilic associations of algae. The vertical distribution of the epipelic algae is partially influenced by the amount of light reaching the sediment, but also strongly influenced by the grazing of animals and erosion by wave action. Temperature, light, and grazing by animals all appear to influence the seasonal fluctuations in the algal standing crop. Concentrations of nutrients immediately above the sediment surface appear to be less important as controlling factors. The most important variables influenceing the primary productivity of the epipelic community are temperature, total algal standing crop, and light. Nutrients, again, appear to be less important as controlling factors. The study supports the idea that epipelic algal growth is high in shallow, low nutrient lakes and that the epipelic algal productivity is extremely important to the total energy budget of the lake.  相似文献

Historically, some fetuses for regulatory developmental toxicity studies have been stained with alizarin red S and cleared with glycerol to visualize the ossified portion of their skeletons. Interest in examining cartilage arose owing to its inclusion in some regulatory guidelines. Methods for double staining rat skeletons have been published previously. The method described here for staining mouse skeletons is fully automated and uses alizarin red S to stain bone and Alcian blue to stain cartilage. Pregnant mice (Crl:CD1) were euthanized on gestation day 18 to obtain fetal specimens. Day 0 post-partum mouse pups also were stained. Our method was developed using the Shandon Pathcentre , which is a fully enclosed automated staining system that allows staining to be carried out at 30° C with a final clearing at 35° C. Our method uses the same solutions as for fetal rat processing, but with reduced time periods for the smaller size of mice vs. rat specimens. Staining, maceration and clearing of the specimens requires approximately 2 days. The time required of laboratory personnel, however, is minimal, because all solutions are changed automatically and the specimens do not require examination or removal from the processor until processing is complete. After processing, the specimens are suitable for immediate assessment of bone and cartilage. A mouse developmental toxicity study using 20 animals/group and approximately 10 fetuses/animal could be processed in only three runs using one machine.  相似文献

An important target tissue for murine cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the submaxillary salivary gland. Submaxillary salivary gland biopsy specimens from BALB/c mice latently infected with murine CMV were examined for murine CMV DNA by in vitro enzymatic amplification using the polymerase chain reaction preceding oligonucleotide hybridization. The amplified sequence was a 152-base pair segment from within the immediate early gene of murine CMV. Biopsy and whole gland specimens from acutely infected BALB/c mice and latently infected, immunosuppressed BALB/c mice were compared for active murine CMV infection. After acute infection with murine CMV, virus was recovered in all cultures of both biopsy and whole salivary gland specimens but from none of the latently infected animals. Reactivated virus was detected by culture of both biopsy (90%) and whole salivary gland specimens (100%) from latently infected mice that received antithymocyte serum. Viral nucleic acid was detected in 90% of biopsy specimens from latently infected animals. Hence, active murine CMV infection can be detected in biopsy specimens from mice with acute and reactivated infection and murine CMV DNA can be amplified and detected in salivary gland biopsy specimens from latently infected animals. Biopsy of this or other target tissues can be useful for obtaining tissue for viral studies where the survival of the animal is important and it is useful to distinguish latent from acute or reactivated infection.  相似文献

It has recently been shown that some non-human animals can cross-modally recognize members of their own taxon. What is unclear is just how plastic this recognition system can be. In this study, we investigate whether an animal, the domestic horse, is capable of spontaneous cross-modal recognition of individuals from a morphologically very different species. We also provide the first insights into how cross-modal identity information is processed by examining whether there are hemispheric biases in this important social skill. In our preferential looking paradigm, subjects were presented with two people and playbacks of their voices to determine whether they were able to match the voice with the person. When presented with familiar handlers subjects could match the specific familiar person with the correct familiar voice. Horses were significantly better at performing the matching task when the congruent person was standing on their right, indicating marked hemispheric specialization (left hemisphere bias) in this ability. These results are the first to demonstrate that cross-modal recognition in animals can extend to individuals from phylogenetically very distant species. They also indicate that processes governed by the left hemisphere are central to the cross-modal matching of visual and auditory information from familiar individuals in a naturalistic setting.  相似文献

Virgin and cultivated biotopes of the Sea of Azov area of Donetsk Province were investigated for parasite coenoses of small mammals. 469 animals and 210 nests were collected, Apodemus sylvaticus, Mus musculus, Microtus arvalis and Cricetulus migratorius being the most abundant species. In all 2940 larvae of trombiculids (18 species) were found on animals and in their nests (2846 specimens on animals and 94 specimens in nests). Two species, Hoffmannina theodori and Doloisia skljari, are new for science, the latter being the first find of the genus Doloisia member in the fauna of the USSR. The majority of parasites are collected from rodents inhabiting virgin biotopes (2328 specimens) while in cultivated biotopes 189 specimens were collected. More rich is the species composition of trombiculids in virgin biotopes (13 species) as compared to that in cultivated ones (5 species), Neotrombicula earis, N. japonica, N. autumnalis and N. vulgaris being mass species. 8 species of larvae are recorded from the nests of rodents. Seasonal dynamics of the abundance of mass species, their occurrence, index of abundance and infection intensity are shown.  相似文献
