The objective of this study was to highlight the problems that arise during the reproduction between thin-tailed rams and fat-tailed ewes. At the same time, particular emphasis laid on the influence of sheep breed, sheep age, time after ram introduction and day of the ewe estrus cycle on ram and ewe sexual behaviour. Rams were subjected to sexual performance tests by being individually exposed to 12 ewes for 3 h daily, 19 consecutive days. The 16 rams of the experiment were separated according to their age (9 and 21 months old) and breed (Chios and Karagouniki), and the 96 ewes of Chios fat-tailed breed, were divided by age (9 and 21 months old). The main characteristics of courtship behaviour, like sniffing, nudging, flehmen response and following were recorded and studied in detail. Mature Chios rams, which were the only one with previous experience of Chios ewes, exhibited higher rates of sexual interest per ewe than the other rams (P < 0.05). On the other hand, rams sniffed and nudged more young than mature ewes (P < 0.05), probably due to the fact that young ewes did not express intense symptoms of estrus. Young rams exhibited substandard sexual interest towards mature ewes, when they first came in contact with them (P < 0.05). In general, Karagouniki thin-tailed rams exhibited reduced rates of mating behaviour when they courted with Chios fat-tailed ewes in comparison with Chios rams (P < 0.05). Moreover, as the time after ram introduction passed, the frequency and duration of sexual behaviour components decreased (P < 0.001). Finally, the effect of the day of the experiment was only significant in the case of sniffing, which increased during the first 2 days and then declined and stabilized (P < 0.01). As it was demonstrated, ram age and ram breed played a fundamental role in the exhibition of sexual interest elements.  相似文献

Ram lambs (7–8 months old) and mature rams (19–20 months old) were used to evaluate the effect of classification levels of male sexual performance on reproductive performance of ewes during spring breeding. In Exp. 1, sexually active ram lambs with high (1.8±0.3; n=5) and low (0.9±0.2; n=5) sexual performance scores (HP and LP; mean±S.E.M.) were used in single sire breeding pens. Ewes (n=305) were stratified by age and assigned to 10 pens for 34 days starting in late March. For Exps. 2 and 3, two replicates were conducted for 2 years with sexually active mature rams in a single sire mating scheme. For Exp. 2, HP rams (n=5) averaged 3.6±0.2 ejaculations and LP rams (n=7) 1.8±0.2 ejaculations for sexual performance scores based on nine, 30 min serving capacity tests (SCT). Polypay ewes (n=152 to 153 per year) were stratified by age and assigned to pens each year for 34–38 days starting in late March for years 1 and 2. For Exp. 3, HP rams (n=6) averaged 3.7±0.1 ejaculations and LP rams (n=10) 2.3±0.1 ejaculations for sexual performance scores based on 18, 30 min SCT. Polypay ewes (n=229 in year 3 and n=244 in year 4) were stratified by age and assigned to pens each year for 34 days starting in late March. In Exp. 1, lambing rates for ewes bred to HP versus LP ram lambs did not differ (65.8 versus 53.0; P=0.20). Prolificacy tended (P=0.06) to be increased by 0.1 lambs in ewes bred by LP ram lambs. Total number of lambs born per ewe present at lambing, and lambing distribution were not altered by HP and LP ram lambs. In Exp. 2, lambing rates for fall-lambing ewes bred to mature HP or LP rams did not differ (58.1 versus 60.1; P=0.78). In Exp. 3, lambing rates for fall-lambing ewes bred to mature HP or LP rams did not differ (74.3 versus 69.0; P=0.35). There was no difference (P>0.10) between years for Exp. 2 or Exp. 3, and mature HP and LP rams did not affect the other reproductive variables monitored. Analyses of the combined data for Exps. 2 and 3 indicated only a year difference (P<0.001) in lambing rates and total lambs born. Present studies indicate that different sexual performance classifications for ram lambs and mature rams did not alter lambing rates or distribution of lambing of Polypays bred in late March to April. These results indicate that HP and LP, sexually active, Polypay rams and ram lambs with average to high quality semen can provide a source of rams for spring breeding Polypays in ambient conditions and that there was no advantage to using HP over sexually active LP ram lambs or rams.  相似文献

Ten Suffolk and ten Lincoln yearling rams were examined for breeding soundness. Semen was evaluated, and the scrotal circumference measured. They were single-sire mated to ten to twelve, whiteface ewe lambs during a 45-day breeding season (October 15 - December 1). First-service conception rates, total conception rate, lambing percentage and lambing percentage per ewe exposed were calculated for each ram and breed. The mean scrotal circumference was 36.5 cm (range 31 - 41.5 cm). The breeding data was then compared for eleven rams with a scrotal circumference of less than 36.5 cm and nine rams greater than 36.5 cm. No direct relationship was demonstrated between scrotal circumference, sperm motility or morphology with fertility in the rams used in this experiment. However, there was a tendency for rams with a high first-service conception rate to have sired more lambs per ewe exposed. The mean first-service conception rate was 63.2% (range 44.4 - 80.0%). When rams with greater than 63.2% first-service conception rate were compared to those with less than 63.2%. the lambs born per ewe exposed were 1.04 and .89, respectively, a significant difference (P<.05). There were no significant differences (P<.05) in performance between the two groups when rams with a scrotal circumference less than 36.5 cm and greater than 36.5 cm were compared, nor were there any differences between scrotal circumference, sperm motility, and morphology when rams with total conception rates greater than 80% were compared to those with conception rates less than 80%.  相似文献

Wide variation in reproductive performance of commercial Merino flocks in south central Australia is the result of genetic and environmental influences that are both amenable to change through decisions of management. Relationships of reproductive traits (estrus, ovulation, fertility, fecundity, lamb survival, and lambs weaned) with variables that graziers can change or modify (strain of Merino, day or month of exposure of ewes to rams, ram effect or teasing, length of the mating period, ram percentage, days between weaning and next mating, stocking density and flock size at lambing, ewe liveweight, and condition) are reported in this paper, the third in a series. Small differences were observed between medium and strong-wool South Australian Merino strains for reproductive traits. Choosing the time of year that ewes are exposed to rams, between late spring to autumn, may result in reduced ovulation rate during early summer (December) giving a potentially smaller net reproductive efficiency (lambs weaned). The ram effect or teasing, used by about 50% of graziers to synchronise lambing, could be effectively employed to the end of January. The technique was not reproductively advantageous when compared with flocks that were not teased. The percentage of rams mated to ewes varied widely (approximately 1-3%) and did not alter flock fertility, suggesting that a substantial proportion of graziers could safely reduce the number of rams purchased. A positive relationship between incidence of estrus during the first 14 d of the cycle and the number of days from weaning to next mating and a negative relationship of returns to service with the same variable indicates that managers should consider increasing the time allowed for recovery of liveweight and body condition by adjusting age at weaning, length of the mating period, or both. Lamb survival was curvilinearly related to flock size and not stocking intensity, with the optimum size at about 400 ewes. The number of lambs weaned per 100 ewes exposed to rams increased by 1.0 kg(-1) increase in liveweight at mating. We concluded that the major factor controlling net reproductive efficiency is nutritional in origin through its effects on ewe liveweight and condition, and is a factor that can be largely manipulated through management.  相似文献

Finn x Dorset ewe lambs (n = 70) born in the spring (March 28 to April 6) from two successive lambing seasons were evaluated for age at first ovulation in the absence of mature rams. Ewe lambs were born in a controlled, short light (8L:16D) photoperiod or in ambient light (13L:11D). At about 10 to 11 wk of age, ewe lambs were allocated to a short (8L:16D) or long (16L:8D) light environment. Plasma progesterone (P(4)) concentrations were measured as an index of first ovulation. First exposure of ewes to sexually mature rams was in November. Most ewe lambs (77%) ovulated before ram exposure. More lambs (P < 0.025) born in ambient light and raised in short light reached puberty with typical cycles of plasma progesterone compared to other treatments. Long days tended to retard the onset of puberty. Although pregnancy rate did not differ across light treatments, more ewes became pregnant from the ambient-light born and short-light raised treatment. Photoperiod is an important factor affecting the onset of sexual maturation and genesis of normal luteal progesterone secretion in the ewe lamb.  相似文献

Two groups of three-to four-month-old weaning ram lambs were studied for 20 months, beginning with weaning at between three and four months. Group 1 was comprised of nine ram lambs which were reared under an intensive husbandry system, and given standard nutrition and mineral supplements throughout the study. Group 2 was comprised of nine rams which were reared under the traditional nomadic/extensive management system, in which the only source of feed was the available pasture. The reproductive traits studied include: age, weight and scrotal circumference at puberty and at all corresponding ages up to 23 months, libido and sexual dexterity and semen characteristics at puberty and all corresponding ages. In the intensively managed rams, the average age at puberty was 6.4+/-0.5 mos. The averages of the other parameters at puberty were: body weight (BW), 21.7+/-2.5kg; scrotal circumference (SC), 18.5+/-1.3cm; libido score, 1.7+/-0.7 and sexual dexterity, 1.7:0.8. In the extensively managed rams, the average age at puberty was 7.8+/-0.3 mos. The average values of the various parameters at puberty were: BW, 17.3+/-1.2kg; SC, 15.2+/-1.4cm; libido score, 3.2+/-0.6 and sexual dexterity, 3.2:1.8. The inter- and intra-group variations in all the parameters at puberty and at all corresponding ages were significant. The average morphological sperm cell abnormalities at puberty were: 25.2+/-3.4% and 31.6+/-8.3% for rams reached puberty and at all corresponding ages than the extensively reared flock. Certain factors that influence post-weaning reproductive development and performance are discussed.  相似文献

A study was carried out on six hill farms, located in the main hill regions of Northern Ireland, over three breeding seasons to investigate the effect of sire breed on ewe dystocia, lamb survival and weaned lamb output. On each farm, groups of 26 to 40 purebred Scottish Blackface ewes (n = 3174) were crossed with Blackface, Swaledale, North Country Cheviot, Lleyn and Texel sires by natural service (year 1) and artificial insemination (years 2 and 3). Each of the mating groups was initially balanced for ewe age, live weight and condition score, and a total of 15 sires of each breed were used over the 3 years. In total, 2272 ewes were recorded at lambing, producing 3451 lambs, over the 3 years. Sire breed had a significant effect (P < 0.001) on lamb birth weight with Blackface and Swaledale the lowest and Texel the highest. The proportion of ewes with dystocia was higher with Texel sires compared with Lleyn, Swaledale and Blackface sires (P < 0.05). Ewes mated to Cheviot sires had more dystocia than those mated to Blackface and Swaledale sires (P < 0.05), while ewes mated to Lleyn sire breed had more dystocia (P < 0.05) than those mated to Blackface sire breed. Most of the incidence of dystocia was attributable to increased lamb birth weight (P < 0.001), and some to litter size (P < 0.05). Swaledale, Cheviot, Lleyn and Texel sire breeds increased the incidence of malpresentations (P < 0.05). Lamb live weight at weaning was higher with Texel- and Cheviot- and Lleyn-sired lambs compared with Blackface- and Swaledale-sired lambs (P < 0.01). The level of lamb mortality at birth was not affected by sire breed. However, lamb mortality at weaning was lower for Lleyn-sired lambs compared with the other lamb genotypes (P < 0.05). These results indicate that the use of sires from larger breeds, such as Lleyn and Texel, within the Blackface ewe flocks can increase lamb output, with no apparent detrimental effects on lamb mortality or ewe survival, but increased assistance at lambing will be required.  相似文献

Two ways of reducing the cost of replacements are increasing litter size and number of litters produced; thus, the total weight of lamb carcass output per ewe lifetime. The effects of ewe genotype on the performance of ewes lambing at 1 year and of their progeny to slaughter, and the effect of age at first joining (7 or 19 months) on BW at ~19 months and survival to joining at 19 months were evaluated over two consecutive years, using 460 ewe lambs from three genotypes: Belclare (Bel), Suffolk × Belclare (Suf × Bel) and ≥ 75% Suffolk ancestry (Suf75). Lambs from the three genotypes were at a similar proportion of mature BW and half of the lambs, within genotype, were allocated to be joined for the first time at 7 or 19 months. The ewe lambs were managed in a grass-based rotational-grazing system, except when housed from December to March on a grass silage-based diet. Belclare ewes had larger litters (P < 0.001), reared more lambs per ewe joined (P < 0.01), were lighter at lambing and at 19 months (P < 0.01), were of smaller body size at 19 months (P < 0.001) and their progeny were lighter at weaning (P < 0.05) relative to Suf75 genotype; the Suf × Bel ewes were intermediate for most traits but had a significantly lower litter size (P < 0.05) than Bel ewes. Progeny from Suf × Bel ewes were 17 days younger at slaughter (P < 0.01) relative to those from Bel ewes. Ewe genotype had no effect (P > 0.05) on lamb mortality (born dead, total mortality to weaning), lambing assistance, number of ewes that failed to lamb, or on ewe survival to 19 months of age. Increasing ewe BW at joining increased the probability (P < 0.001) of rearing at least one lamb and this effect was consistent across genotypes. There were significant relationships (P < 0.001) between ewe BW at lambing and lamb BW at birth and at weaning of 0.053 (SE 0.0089) kg and 0.29 (SE 0.049) kg, respectively. Ewes that lambed at 1 year were 2 kg lighter (P < 0.001) at 19 months of age and had a smaller body size (P < 0.01) relative to those not joined. It is concluded that ewe genotype had a significant effect on number of lambs reared, and thus lamb carcass output. Whilst lambing at 1 year reduced BW by 2 kg when joined at 19 months, it did not affect ewe survival to that stage.  相似文献

The study was conducted to assess the traits traditionally used to select the Bonga sheep reared in Southern Ethiopia. The breed was included for improvement under the community based breeding program (CBBP) launched in the year 2009. The results are based on the data collected from the project between 2009 till 2012. The findings are based on focus group discussions with the community elders who have been rearing the Bonga sheep for more than 20 years. The present findings are based on information obtained from 50% of the total respondents who were involved in CBBP. The Bonga sheep is a mutton type breed and the ewes are moderately prolific. In the past this breed of sheep were bartered to settle legal disputes and were traded against household commodities.. However, over the years (and also after the intervention of CBBP) the sheep have been selected for their body weight as well as for their distribution in many parts of Ethiopia The respondents selected the lambs at both pre weaning and post weaning stages. Traditionally the traits of rams are selected based on their body length, canon circumference, broad face, enlarged thyroid, while for the ewes, traits prolificacy, skin thickness and pelvic width are determining characters. Fat tail and brown coat color were preferred irrespective of the sexes in trait selection. The ram lambs selected for breeding purpose are locally known as “Dookoo”. These rams are selected based on some predetermined phenotypic traits and are initially selected at preweaning stage and further, again at the post weaning stage. These rams are preferentially cared and are provided with supplementary feed and comfortable housing.  相似文献

Two closed lines of sheep selected for high and low prolificacy were established in 1969. Rams within each line were selected on the basis of their dams' lambing records. Foundation ewes were assigned at random to selected rams, and no ewe selection was practiced until replacement yearlings were selected for mating. Selection of the rams used to mate the foundation ewes resulted in more lambs born per 100 ewes exposed to the ram (P<.10) and more lambs born per 100 ewes lambing from the high line rams (P<.05).Seven rams from each line were then used to estimate fertilization rate and embryonic survival rate when mated to an unrelated group of ewes. There was no difference in ovulation rate or fertilization rate of ewes mated to low and high line rams. Percent eggs recovered per CL was 80 and 92 (P<.01) for low and high line rams, respectively. At 35 days 82 and 86% of the ewes were pregnant, and 84 and 93% of the CL were represented by embryos in the pregnant ewes mated to low and high lines, respectively. Estimated embryonic survival rates were 81 and 89% in ewes mated to low and high line rams, respectively.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the failure of some adult rams to mate estrous ewes originates from a preference for rams instead of ewes. Eight rams had been reared in all-male groups and, as adults, subjected to a heterosexual mating test. During the testing, four of the animals exhibited normal levels of sexual performance while the other four showed little interest in estrous ewes (low-response rams). Within the all-male rearing environments, those rams that subsequently showed little interest in estrous ewes had engaged in significantly more sex-like behavior with other rams than did those rams that subsequently showed normal sexual behavior toward ewes. In the present study, the four rams that previously showed little interest in estrous ewes and the four normal rams were presented with choice situations consisting of a tethered estrous ewe and a tethered ram. The rams that showed little interest in ewes consistently preferred to direct sexual behavior patterns toward the tethered ram, whereas the normal rams preferred to direct sexual behavior toward the estrous ewe. Therefore, it is concluded that the failure of some adult rams to mate estrous ewes is a consequence of their preference for rams as sexual partners.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted in a large flock of Berrichon purebred and Romanov × Berrichon F1 crossbred ewes. In experiment 1, 157 ewe lambs were placed in six groups according to season of mating and maternal breed. Within each group equal numbers of females were treated with either medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) or fluorogestone acetate (FGA)-impregnated sponges for 14 days; dosage of PMSG at the time of sponge removal was 500 and 300 I.U. respectively for pure and crossbred. In experiment 2, 111 dry yearling ewes of the Berrichon breed were involved, of which 35, 51 and 25 had either a short lambing to treatment interval (approximately 3 months), a long lambing to treatment interval (approximately 6 months), or were primiparous or nulliparous. They were also treated either with MAP or FGA.The conception rates were extremely high (overall near 86%) in ewe lambs and not significantly affected by seasons or breeds or treatments. Prolificacy and number of lambs per ewe mated were higher in the F1 crossbred group than in pure Berrichon females (respectively 1.91 vs. 1.34 lambs/mated ewe). No significant difference between the two progestagens could be observed for any of the productivity criteria. Fertility was equally satisfactory in yearlings (overall near 85%) irrespective of the interval between lambing and mating. However, the fertility of the nulliparous ewes (those that failed to conceive as ewe lambs) was significantly lower (72%). The number of lambs per ewe mated was 1.78 in yearlings with a 6-month interval from lambing to mating but was not significantly different from the numbers recorded in the other two groups (1.37 and 1.36). As in experiment 1, there was no difference in the results obtained after either of the two progestagen treatments.In conclusion, progestagen treatment has been shown in both ewe lambs and yearlings to be a very effective means of increasing lamb production in large flocks. This was achieved in ewe lambs regardless of the season and, in dry yearling ewes, regardless of the interval from lambing to mating in the anoestrous season.  相似文献

Active immunization of Merino and crossbred ewe lambs early in life with a partly purified inhibin derived from bovine follicular fluid (bFF) advanced their puberty. This occurred whether the lambs were immunized from 3 weeks of age or from 9 weeks of age or just 3 times between 3 and 9 weeks. However, the effect was more obvious with multiple injections starting at 3 weeks of age. The ovulation rate of the immunized lambs was significantly higher than that of the control ewes. When lambs were subjected to multiple immunizations the increased ovulation rate persisted in Merinos for at least 1 year after immunization ceased. The lambs injected 3 times only (at 3, 6 and 9 weeks of age) did not show any increase in ovulation rate. Plasma concentrations of FSH and LH measured in blood samples taken 1 week after immunization were not significantly different between the treatment groups. Daily sperm output in the urine and testis diameter were measured in ram lambs from the same breeds and flocks as the ewe lambs. Immunization with the inhibin preparation from 3 weeks of age resulted in a significant increase in daily sperm output (4255 +/- 701 vs 2344 +/- 344 x 10(6), P less than 0.01) and testis diameter (5.21 +/- 0.3 vs 4.33 +/- 0.2 cm, P less than 0.05) in Merino rams examined in the non-breeding season when the rams were aged 23 months. Although the same trend was seen in the following year the differences were not significant. Immunization from 9 weeks of age had no effect. A similar increase in daily sperm output was seen (at 20 and 25 months of age) in crossbred rams immunized from 3 weeks of age but the difference was not significant. Plasma concentrations of FSH (but not LH) in samples from rams immunized from 3 weeks of age were significantly higher than those of control rams at 7 and 60 weeks of age in Merino rams and at 23 and 31 weeks of age in crossbred rams. Plasma FSH concentrations at 21 and 26 weeks of age in the Merino rams immunized from 3 weeks of age were higher than those of control lambs, and these increases preceded a significant (P less than 0.05) increase in testicular diameter at 30 weeks of age (4.99 +/- 0.2 vs 4.37 +/- 0.2 cm). Changes in the numbers of infective larvae available on pasture and the development of helminth infection in spring-born lambs were studied in an environment with a mild winter and where pastures are grazed throughout the year. Prior contamination of pastures in autumn and early winter was compared with egg deposition by lambing ewes as sources of infection. Larvae derived from eggs deposited by lambing ewes did not appear on pasture until 8 weeks after the beginning of lambing but were present in increasing numbers for the last 7 weeks before weaning at 11–15 weeks of age. Lambs exposed to prior contamination became infected earlier than those exposed only to ewe contamination, but lamb egg output made no contribution to larval numbers on pasture before weaning. Lamb growth rates to weaning did not differ between groups exposed either to prior contamination alone, to ewe egg output alone or to both, but all groups carried appreciable infections at weaning. After weaning, lambs remained on the same pastures, and those exposed to ewe contamination suffered severe trichostrongylosis 5 weeks after weaning. Lambs exposed only to over-wintered contamination also developed severe trichostrongylosis 9 weeks after weaning. The results are compared with those of similar recent studies in Britain and their implications for control of infection are discussed.  相似文献

A procedure for assessing sexual activity (libido) and serving capacity (number of ejaculations) in individual rams is described. Libido and serving capacity was measured by this procedure in 10 Lincoln, 10 Suffolk, 2 Columbia, and 2 Polypay rams prior to the breeding season. Semen was evaluated, and the scrotal circumference measured. The rams were single-sire mated to 10-12 whiteface, crossbred ewes during a 35-day breeding season (September 26 - October 29). First-service conception rates, total conception rate, lambing percentage per ewe lambing, and lambing percentage per ewe exposed were calculated for each ram. The mean libido score for the 24 rams was 8.95 and the mean serving capacity score was 3.16. The 24 rams were classified as low serving capacity (<2 ejaculation), medium serving capacity (2-3 ejaculations), or high serving capacity (>3 ejaculations). There were no significant differences in either conception rate or lambing percentages between the 3 groups of rams. The first-service conception rate, total conception rate, lambing percentage per ewe lambing, and lambing percentage per ewe exposed were 74.8, 93.8, 148.6, and 139.4 percent, respectively, for the 24 rams. Libido and serving capacity tests in the rams, as used in this experiment, prior to the breeding season, were not successful in predicting fertility or prolificacy in ewes.  相似文献

Low pasture allowance during gestation affects ewes’ BW at parturition, the bond with their lamb, lamb development, and thus also may affect their responses to weaning. The objectives were to determine if native pasture allowance from before conception until late pregnancy affects ewe–lamb behaviours at lambing, ewes’ milk yield, lambs’ BW, and the behavioural and physiological changes of ewes and lambs at weaning. From 23 days before conception until 122 days of pregnancy, 24 ewes grazed on two different native pasture allowances: high (10 to 12 kg of dry matter (DM)/100 kg of BW per day; HPA treatment; n=12) or low (5 to 8 kg of DM/100 kg of BW per day; LPA treatment; n=12). Thereafter, all ewes grazed on Festuca arundinacea and received rice bran and crude glycerine. Ewes’ body condition score (BCS) and BW were recorded during pregnancy and postpartum periods. Milk yield was determined on days 32, 41 and 54 after lambing. Lambs’ BW was recorded from birth until 72 days after lambing. Latency from parturition until the ewe licked her lamb, maternal behaviour score (a test that evaluates maternal attachment to the lamb) and latency for lamb to stand up and suckle were determined. The behaviour of the lambs and ewes was recorded before and after weaning (at 65 days). The ewes’ serum total protein, albumin and globulin concentrations were measured before and after weaning. The HPA ewes presented greater BW (P<0.005) and BCS (P<0.005) than the LPA ewes during pregnancy and postpartum (P<0.04), and had a greater milk yield than the LPA ewes (P<0.03). Treatments did not influence any behaviour at lambing, lambs’ BW, neither the ewes’ behavioural and physiological changes at weaning. HPA lambs paced and vocalized more than LPA lambs (P<0.0001). The variation of albumin concentration before and after weaning was greater in the HPA lambs than in the LPA lambs (P<0.0001). In conclusion, although ewes’ BW, BCS and milk production were affected by pasture allowance until late pregnancy, this did not affect the behaviours that lead to the establishment of the mother–young bond, nor the ewes’ behavioural responses at weaning. Lambs reared by ewes that grazed on low pasture allowance during pregnancy presented fewer behavioural changes and a lower decrease of albumin concentration after weaning. Lambs’ BW was not affected by the feeding received by their mothers.  相似文献

The efficacy of using a low cost system for delivering progesterone as part of an estrous synchronization protocol in sheep was evaluated. In experiment 1, Barbados Black Belly ewes (n=34) and ewe lambs (n=35; 37.5±0.9 kg) were assigned to be untreated, control animals (C), or to receive PGF(2α) on d0 (PG), or receive two injections of progesterone (200mg, i.m. each) on D -5 and on D -2.5, prior to PGF(2α), on D 0 (2PPG). Treatment with 2PPG increased the proportion of animals lambing to the first service (P<0.05), an effect that was greater in ewe lambs than ewes (treatment × parity; P<0.05). The interval from ram introduction to lambing and the mean lambing day was less (P=0.04) in the 2PPG-treated animals compared to control animals. In Experiment 2, lactating ewes from experiment 1 (n=61) 60-85 days postpartum were assigned within parity and number of lambs reared to remain nursing (S; n=29) or weaned (W; n=32) 3 weeks prior to treatment with the 2PPG protocol. There was no effect of treatment on the proportion of animals lambing to the first service or overall, interval from ram introduction to lambing and lambing interval. An 8-month lambing interval was observed in ewes in which estrus was synchronized regardless of physiological state. In conclusion, the two-progesterone injection synchronization protocol may be used as a practical low cost and efficient method of synchronizing estrus to reduce the lambing interval and maximize productivity in tropical breeds of sheep.  相似文献

The experiment measured lamb responses to supplementation of the pregnant ewe diet with vitamin E above requirement. Crossbred ewes were mated with either Suffolk or Texel rams. Twin-bearing ewes were randomly allocated (approximately 21 months of age at allocation) to one of four treatment groups (20 ewes per group, 10 mated with Suffolk and 10 with Texel rams). Treatments imposed were 50, 100, 150 or 250 IU supplementary vitamin E per ewe per day to give a four treatment by two sire-type factorial experimental design. Ewes were fed concentrates to meet energy requirements for stage of pregnancy and hay ad libitum. Diets were introduced approximately 6 weeks before lambing. Blood samples were obtained prior to introduction of diets, 17 days after introduction of diets and within 24 h of lambing from a subset of eight ewes per treatment (32 total). Colostrum samples were obtained from 10 ewes per treatment, 12 h after birth of the first lamb. All births were observed and a lamb vigour score was assigned to each lamb 5 min after birth. At 1 and 12 h after birth, rectal temperature, and at 12 h after birth, sex, crown-rump length and BW of each lamb were recorded. Mean ewe plasma α-tocopherol concentration prior to introduction of the diets was 1.5 μg/ml (s.e.m. 0.09) and did not differ between groups. There were positive linear (P < 0.001) effects of dietary vitamin E on plasma (17 days after introduction of diets) and colostrum (12 h after birth) α-tocopherol concentrations. Lamb vigour scores were superior (P < 0.001) for lambs sired by Texel rather than Suffolk rams but there were no differences as a result of vitamin E supplementation. Lamb mortality was low and unrelated to either sire or supplementary vitamin E. Lamb birth and weaning weights were also unaffected by vitamin E supplementation. Supplementing the ewe with vitamin E therefore had no effect on any lamb measurements.  相似文献

Garole, a prolific small sized sheep breed of India was introduced in the Mutton Project of the Institute during 1997 to explore the possibility of incorporating fecundity gene into Malpura (M) sheep of semi-arid region of Rajasthan. The data on reproduction and production traits of M and Garole × Malpura (GM) half-breds was used in the study to assess the improvement in evolved crossbred stock. The overall percent gain in prolificacy in GM was 52.38, which increased to 75.73 in third parity. The GM compared to M ewes also weaned more lambs per ewe lambed (1 versus 1.41). The lambing rate averaged 91.75 and 148.21% in M and GM ewes, respectively. The twin lambing percentage was only 4.71% in M flock while; it reached up to 51.10% in GM. Moreover, 5.72% of GM ewes produced triplets also. The genetic group non-significantly affect ewe efficiency (EE), but GM produced 3.3% more total lambs weight per ewe lambed at weaning and 6.15% more total lamb weight per ewe lambed at 6-month of age. The body weights at different ages of GM half-breds were lower (P < 0.01) compared to contemporary M lambs. The parity of ewes significantly affects body weight from birth weight to 12-month of age. The survivability of GM half-breds was almost at par with the local M sheep. Results revealed that the fecundity genes responsible for increasing prolificacy have been incorporated into the GM and it might prove a valuable germplasm towards evolving a new prolific strain of sheep. The crossing of Garole with M increased the ewe efficiency.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted to evaluate the relationship between serving capacity scores and breeding performance of rams. The first study was conducted to determine whether rams with above or below mean serving capacity scores could perform equally in greater and lesser breeding intensity, single-sire mating schemes. The second study was conducted to determine whether rams with above and below mean serving capacity scores could perform equally well when only one or two ewes were in estrus daily in a multiple-sire breeding scheme (two rams/pen). Rams (n=68) were ranked according to average number of ejaculations recorded in serving capacity tests. Sixteen rams with the greatest scores (above-average) and 16 rams with least scores (below-average) were identified for breeding. Half of above-average and half of below-average rams were used in the two studies. For study 1, each ram was individually introduced to 23 estrus-synchronized ewes for 9 d to simulate high breeding intensity. Rams were given a 5-d rest before they were individually introduced to 23-24 naturally cyclic ewes for 17 d (low breeding intensity). For study 2, 16 rams were paired across ram types, and each pair competed for 20 ewes for 18 d (8 pens). For study 1, ewe fertility (ewes lambing/ewes present at lambing) and number of lambs born were greater (P<0.001) for above-average (0.67+/-0.03 and 27.6+/-1.2, respectively) than for below-average rams (0.39+/-0.07 and 15.3+/-2.7) with greater breeding intensity. Ewe fertility and lambs born did not differ for above-average (0.91+/-0.03 and 37.8+/-1.9, respectively) and below-average rams (0.86+/-0.03 and 39.0+/-1.9) with less breeding intensity. For study 2, number of ewes lambing (99+/-8.0 compared with 72+/-13.6; P=0.12) and number of lambs sired (149+/-18.5 compared with 101+/-22.8; P=0.14) did not differ between above- and below-average rams, respectively, in direct competition. Sexual classifications based on serving capacity tests are related to breeding performance of rams in certain breeding environments. When breeding intensity is greater, above-average rams impregnate more ewes and sire more lambs than below-average rams. When only a small number of ewes are in estrus daily, below-average rams for serving capacity scores perform as well as above-average rams in multiple-sire and single-sire breeding environments. We suggest that above-average rams should be used to reduce number of rams required when breeding intensity is greater.  相似文献
