Ewes of Clun Forest, Finnish, Jacob, Dalesbred and Soay breeds of sheep quickly identified, and ran to their lambs when given a choice of three litters of lambs 16 m away from the gate by which the ewes entered the experimental area. When the lambs were hidden behind canvas, less than half the ewes ran to their own lambs and they took much longer to reach them. Most of the ewes which did not stay near their own lambs, went away and did not stay by alien lambs. There was no significant difference between the breeds of sheep and no definite change in behaviour which was related to the age of the lamb.  相似文献

The positions of ewes and lambs from three breeds of sheep were observed in a field during 29 hours of observation over 3 weeks. It was found that the Dalesbred and Clun Forest sheep kept apart while resting and for most of the grazing time. The Jacob flock divided into two groups and mixed with the others in a transient way. The aggregation of the breeds varied in that the Dalesbred ewes and lambs dispersed over the field in pairs while the Cluns gathered in larger groups. The Jacobs were rarely seen in groups of more than 12 animals. The difference in breed behaviour and identity is discussed.  相似文献

Seven pairs of lambs, each pair consisting of one Dalesbred and one Jacob lamb born to either a Dalesbred or a Jacob ewe following embryo transplant, were observed for 5 weeks in a field. The association of the lambs with their sibling and with other sheep in the field was recorded. The lambs were seen to be with their dam 53% of the time at 10 weeks and this fell to 42% in weeks 11 and 12. They spent more than twice the amount of time near to a sibling than with any other lamb (54% and 25%). When the ewes were removed from the field, the lambs bunched together and the association with siblings and with other lambs increased. There was no breed identity amongst the lambs, but the Jacob ewes mixed more with other Jacobs and Dalesbred ewes mixed more with other Dalesbreds. Comparisons were made with pairs of genetically related Jacob lambs. It is concluded that association between lambs born to the same ewe is the result of that birth and subsequent upbringing and not due to genetic inheritance.  相似文献

The effect of prolificacy on mother–young mutual recognition is still largely unknown in sheep. The aim of the present study was to investigate the ability of prolific ewes to develop an exclusive bond with their neonate and to recognize each other from alien subjects. Observations were performed on 11 D’man and 16 Romanov ewes with, respectively, 19 and 37 of their lambs. Maternal selectivity was tested at 24 h postpartum during two consecutive periods of 3 min. All mothers accepted their own lambs at suckling, while 21 out of 27 (78%) rejected the alien, thus displaying mostly selective nursing. To assess mother–young recognition, a two-choice test was performed at 36 h postpartum. Ewes clearly preferred their own lambs to an alien lamb and behavioral differences were not found between mothers of small (singletons and twins) and large litters (triplets and quadruplets). Romanov ewes reached their own lambsmore rapidly and spent more time near them than D’man ewes. Lambs from small litters, in particular light lambs, clearly preferred their mothers to an alien dam; however, both light and heavy lambs in large litters did not discriminate between the two stimulus ewes. D’man lambs clearly preferred their mothers to an alien dam; in contrast, such a preference was not as clearly demonstrated in Romanov lambs.  相似文献

The survival of the neonate relies on the integrated expression of appropriate behaviours from both the mother and young. In precocious species, like the sheep, the speed with which the lamb stands and seeks the udder is related to lamb survival. In this study the effects of birth difficulty, lamb birth weight, ewe loss or gain in backfat from conception to delivery, ewe parity, litter size, and lamb sex on neonatal lamb behavioural development were investigated in over 500 lambs of two breeds (Scottish Blackface and Suffolk). Lambs that required assistance to be delivered were significantly slower to perform all neonatal behaviours than unassisted lambs (P<0.001), and were less active over the first 3 days after delivery (P<0.05). There were no effects of lamb birthweight that were not accounted for by the increased likelihood of requiring assistance in heavier birth weight lambs. Ewes that mobilised less body fat during their pregnancy produced lambs that stood and sucked quickly (P<0.001), and were more active over the first 3 days of life. Lambs born to first parity ewes were slower to stand and suck than lambs born to experienced ewes (P<0.001). There was an improvement in time taken by lambs to stand, seek the udder and to suck with each increase in ewe parity. Litter size had an additional retarding influence on the behaviour of multiple-born lambs that could not be accounted for by birthweight. In the Suffolk breed male lambs were slower to stand and suck than female lambs, this effect was not seen in Blackface lambs. These data demonstrate that lambs that require assistance at birth, even if they survive the birth process, lambs born to ewes that lose a lot of condition over pregnancy or first parity ewes, triplet lambs and, at least in some breeds, male lambs are slower to progress through the sequence of neonatal behaviours. These lambs are, therefore, at greater risk of not surviving to weaning.  相似文献

We tested the ability of Merino and Merino × Romanov ewes and lambs to recognise each other at a distance when given the choice between an alien partner and their own. Two groups of animals were studied. In the first group, multiparous ewes and their lambs were housed permanently indoors at a stocking-rate of 1 ewe/2 m2. In the second group, ewes and lambs were run permanently outside in a paddock at a stocking rate of 1 ewe/500 m2. Of animals living outside, 87% of ewes recognised their own lamb (100% of multiparous dams versus 84% of primiparous ones, P = 0.02). This differed significantly from a random choice. By contrast, the proportion of correct choices by ewes living inside (all multiparous) was significantly lower (64%) and did not differ from a random choice at the 5% level. Lambs reared outside recognised their dam in 95% of cases, versus 72% in lambs reared indoors (P = 0.01). Both frequencies differed significantly from a choice at random. It is concluded that the environmental conditions in which ewes and lambs are maintained can influence their ability to select their partners at a distance with the help of auditory and visual cues.  相似文献

The nursing behaviour of marked bighorn ewes, Ovis canadensis, and their lambs was observed in Alberta, Canada, for 2 years. Suckle duration decreased as lambs grew older. Nursing behaviour in midlactation was correlated with maternal condition; young ewes, ewes with high faecal counts of lungworm (Protostrongylus spp.) larvae, and ewes whose lambs were born late allowed shorter suckles and were less likely to nuzzle their lamb's rump during a suckle. Sons did not appear to receive more milk than daughters. Suckle duration in mid-lactation was correlated with survival for female lambs but not for males. Lambs born late were disadvantaged, probably because nutritious forage was accessible to their mothers only in early lactation.  相似文献

The five Northern European short-tailed sheep breeds present in North America are the Finnsheep, Romanov, Icelandic, Shetland and Gotland. The Finnsheep and Romanov were first imported in 1966 and 1986, respectively, for their high reproductive performance. The Shetland, Icelandic and Gotland breeds were first imported in 1980, 1985 and 2005, respectively, for the uniqueness of their physical appearance and their unique fleeces desired by fiber craftspeople. There have been no scientific studies conducted on the performance of the Shetland, Icelandic or Gotland breeds relative to other breeds of sheep in North America. However, the Shetland and Icelandic breeds have become very popular in the United States and ranked 9th and 18th, respectively, among 35 breeds of sheep for number of purebred animals registered in 2008. The performance of the Finnsheep breed in North America relative to domestic breeds has been thoroughly investigated. Compared to several domestic purebreds and crosses, sheep with Finnsheep breeding had a younger age at puberty, greater fertility to autumn mating, greater litter size, greater survival to weaning, similar growth rate, similar subcutaneous fat thickness, smaller loin muscle area and greater percentage of kidney and pelvic fat. Each 1% increase in Finnsheep breeding in ewes was associated with approximately 0.01 more lambs born per ewe lambing. In North American studies, Romanov ewes were superior to Finnsheep ewes for reproductive rate and lamb production per ewe under both autumn and spring mating. Lambs of the two breeds were similar for survival, growth and carcass traits. Romanov and Romanov-cross ewes produced fleeces that were heavily contaminated with medulated and colored fibers and were of very low commercial value. Three composite breeds containing 25% to 49% Finnsheep breeding (Polypay, Rideau Arcott and Outaouais Arcott) were developed in North America and are now more popular than the Finnsheep breed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of age and breed on the reproductive performance and lamb output of crossbred hill ewes relative to purebred Scottish Blackface (BF). BF ewes were compared alongside Swaledale (SW) × BF, North Country Cheviot (CH) × BF, Lleyn (LL) × BF and Texel (T) × BF ewes on six commercial hill farms across Northern Ireland, on which all the ewes were born and reared. Ewes were mated to a range of sire breeds, balanced across breeds, for up to five successive breeding seasons. Mature live weight of adult BF, SW × BF, CH × BF, LL × BF and T × BF ewes was 52.8, 54.9, 60.3, 55.6 and 58.6 kg (P < 0.001), respectively. Compared with the pure BF, the number of lambs born per ewe lambed was higher with LL × BF and SW × BF (P < 0.05), whereas the number of lambs weaned per ewe lambed was greater for LL × BF and T × BF (P < 0.01). Total litter weight at birth of all the crossbred ewes was heavier (P < 0.01) than the pure BF, except in primiparous 2-year-old ewes. Lambs born to CH × BF and T × BF dams were 0.24 to 0.35 kg heavier at birth (P < 0.01) than the other ewe breeds, whereas lambs born to CH × BF, LL × BF and T × BF dams were, on average, 1.7, 1.3 and 1.5 kg, respectively, heavier (P < 0.01) at weaning than those from BF dams due to their higher (P < 0.05) average daily gain. Compared with the pure BF, total weaned lamb output per ewe lambed was 3.7, 4.8, 6.7 and 5.4 kg heavier (P < 0.05) for SW × BF, CH × BF, LL × BF and T × BF, respectively. However, as a result of the heavier live weight of the crossbred ewes, production efficiency (lamb output per kilogram live weight (W) and lamb output per kilogram metabolic live weight (W0.75)) was higher (P < 0.001) for LL × BF ewes only. For all ewe breeds, litter size at birth per ewe lambed, total lamb birth weight per ewe lambed and litter size at weaning increased (P < 0.001) with age up to 5 years, but decreased in 6-year-old ewes. Average lamb weaning weight and total weaned lamb output per ewe lambed increased (P < 0.001) with age up to 4 years . Production efficiency of the 6-year-old ewes was lower (P < 0.01) than the younger ewes. This study shows that adopting a flock replacement policy based on crossing BF ewes with LL, SW, T and CH sires can lead to significant improvements in the productivity of hill flocks.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of dietary lipid source on the growth and carcass characteristics of lambs sourced from a range of crossbred hill ewes. Over a 2-year period, 466 lambs representing the progeny of Scottish Blackface (BF × BF), Swaledale (SW) × BF, North Country Cheviot (CH) × BF, Lleyn (LL) × BF and Texel (T) × BF ewes were sourced from six commercial hill flocks and finished on one of four diets: grass pellets (GP), cereal-based concentrate (CC), CC enriched with oilseed rape (CR) and CC enriched with fish oil (CF). Dry matter intake (DMI) was highest (P < 0.001) in lambs offered GP; however, carcass weight gain (CWG) and feed conversion efficiency were higher (P < 0.001) in lambs fed concentrate-based diets. For lambs offered concentrate-based diets, DMI and live weight gain were lower (P < 0.001) for CF than CC or CR. Lambs with T × BF dams achieved a higher (P < 0.05) daily CWG and CWG/kg DMI than BF × BF, SW × BF or LL × BF dams. When lambs were slaughtered at fat score 3, CH × BF, LL × BF and T × BF dams increased carcass weight by 0.8 to 1.4 kg (P < 0.001) and conformation score (CS) by 0.2 to 0.4 units (P < 0.001) compared with BF × BF or SW × BF dams. However, breed effects on carcass conformation were reduced by 50% when lambs were slaughtered at a constant carcass weight. Diets CC and CR increased carcass weight by 0.8 to 1.6 kg (P < 0.001) and CS by 0.1 to 0.3 units (P < 0.001) compared with GP and CF. Both, dam breed and dietary effects on carcass conformation were associated with an increase (P < 0.001) in shoulder width of the lambs. Lambs fed CF and slaughtered at a constant carcass weight had more subcutaneous fat over the Longissumus dorsi (P < 0.05), Iliocostalis thoracis (P < 0.001) and Obliquus internus abdominis (P < 0.001) compared with those fed CC. However, these effects were removed when lambs were slaughtered at a constant fat score. At both endpoints, lambs from T × BF dams contained less (P < 0.05) perinephric and retroperitoneal fat than SW × BF or LL × BF dams fed GP or CC, respectively. The results from this study show that using crossbred ewes sired by CH, LL or T sires will increase carcass weight and improve carcass conformation of lambs sourced from hill flocks. Inclusion of oilseed rape in lamb finishing diets had only minor effects on performance compared with a standard CC but feeding fish oil or GP impacted negatively on lamb growth and carcass quality.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of tranquilization on the responses of ewes to alien lambs substituted for own lambs 48–72 h after parturition. Eleven ewes whose young had been taken away, and nine ewes with a lamb of their own, were penned with alien lambs following a single injection of the tranquilizer perphenazine. Seventeen control ewes, including 15 whose only young had been taken away, were also exposed to alien lambs after receiving placebo injections of normal saline. The responses of the ewes to the alien lambs were studied over a four-day period. All ten tranquilized ewes exposed to a single alien lamb without their own young present readily accepted the strange offspring. All of the tranquilized ewes accompanied by one of their own offspring, and a single ewe that was given an alien set of twins in place of her own single lamb, subsequently rejected the strange young. Six of 15 control ewes, with own young removed, accepted alien lambs. The remaining 11 control ewes rejected alien lambs. The success of fostering appeared to be positively related to the persistence of sucking attempts by the lamb, and inversely related to the aggressiveness of the ewe. Tranquilization under the conditions employed can be an efficient technique for fostering single alien lambs on post-partum ewes that have lost their own lambs, but does not facilitate fostering on ewes with their own young present.  相似文献

Association between twin lambs before and after weaning and their association with their dam before weaning was observed in Dalesbred, Jacob, Border Leicester and Border Leicester × Jacob Lambs. There was no significant difference between breeds, but the females spent more time close to the ewe than the males. The proportion of close associations was less and intermediate associations were higher in twins of mixed sex. The major effect of weaning was an increase in pair-association for 2 days; by the third day, pairassociation had returned to pre-weaning levels. It is interesting that pair-association with non-castrated males increased after weaning.  相似文献

Estrus was monitored in 715 straightbred and crossbred ewes during spring lactation, postweaning, summer and/or late summer breeding periods. Straightbred ewes were comprised of seven breeds, and crossbreds consisted of Rambouillet- and Finnsheep-sired ewes of the seven breeds. Estrus was detected in 5.4% of the Rambouillet and Finnsheep crossbred ewes during lactation. After weaning, the incidence of estrus was 1.1% in all crossbred and straightbred ewes. The incidence of estrus was 5.2% for all ewes during the summer period. During late summer (July 28 to August 17), 42% of all ewes showed estrus and both breed of sire and breed of dam influenced estrous activity (P<0.01). Straightbred Rambouillet, Targhee, Dorset and most Rambouillet-sired crossbred ewes showed the greatest estrous activity and could be the genetic stock of choice for early lamb production. Straightbred Hampshire, Suffolk and most Finnsheep crossbred ewes showed estrous activity later in the season. Results support the conclusion that certain sheep breeds and breed crosses show estrous activity during August, while other breeds and breed crosses begin estrous activity later and continue until March or April. Thus, lambs may be produced from January through September each year by maintaining several different breeds or breed crosses in the breeding flock.  相似文献

Lamb survival is impaired in low birth weight lambs, and those that are slow to stand and suck. Many of the factors that influence lamb vigour, such as parity, litter size, and breed, may exert their effects, at least partially, before birth by influencing placenta development. Our hypothesis was that retarded lamb behavioural development was due to differences in placentation in these animals. Data were collected from Blackface and Suffolk lambs in the first 2 h after birth and placentas were collected when delivered. Suffolk lambs, which were behaviourally slower and had lower rectal temperatures than Blackface lambs, were associated with larger but less efficient placentas (placental efficiency defined as foetal weight supported per g placenta) with fewer foetal cotyledons than Blackface placentas. Triplet lambs were significantly slower than twin or single lambs to suck and had lower rectal temperatures. Although placenta efficiency increased with litter size, placenta and cotyledon weight, and cotyledon number increased with twinning but not thereafter. It seemed likely that triplet lambs suffered some placental insufficiency in comparison to other litter sizes. Lambs born to first parity mothers were slower to stand and reach the udder than lambs of more experienced ewes, and first parity ewes also had smaller and less efficient placentas although cotyledon number was not affected. Male lambs tended to be slower than female lambs for most behaviours, although rectal temperatures were not affected. The sire of the lamb also influenced lamb behaviour and rectal temperature. Both lamb sex and lamb sire influenced the average weight of placental cotyledons, thus some of the sire effect on the behaviour and birth weight of his progeny might be mediated through placental development. Lamb neonatal vigour was correlated with placental efficiency suggesting that lamb behaviour immediately after birth is related to placental development and function.  相似文献

Lambs were thoroughly anointed with various odoriferous substances to test the facilitatory effects on substitutive fostering on to multiparous Merino ewes held in individual pens. The ewes were first familiarised with an odorant by anointing their own lamb with it 24 h before a similarly anointed foster lamb was presented. The odorants were neatsfoot oil, wool wax, vegetable oil, butyric and propionic acids, mercaptoethanol, vanillin, methyl salicylate and eucalyptus oil. Acceptance of foster lambs was assessed over the next 48 h. Odorants were not applied to the ewes. All eight foster lambs treated with neatsfoot oil were accepted within 24 h; seven immediately. There were few immediate acceptances with the other odorants, but from two to five lambs out of groups of six were permanently fostered by 48 h. Only one foster lamb was accepted in the control group of 12 in which no odorant was used. Fostering was most successful with neatsfoot oil and wool wax, both substances that originated from ruminant skin.Fostering was less successful in tests that omitted pre-exposure of the ewes to their own lambs treated with neatsfoot oil, wool wax or vegetable oil.Toxicity problems were encountered with ethanol solutions of mercaptoethanol, methyl salicylate, eucalyptus oil and neatsfoot oil.  相似文献

Background

The major prolificacy gene FecL was first described in the Lacaune sheep meat breed Ovi-Test in 1998. A few studies estimated the effect of this gene on prolificacy but little data is available. In 2010, the Ovi-Test cooperative started genotyping FecL in all of their replacement ewe lambs. Thanks to the large amount of genotyping data that is available now, gene effects on litter size and other relevant traits can be estimated more accurately.

Methods

Our study included 5775 ewes genotyped since 2010 and 1025 sires genotyped since 2002. Performances and pedigrees were extracted from the French national database for genetic evaluation and research. Analysis of the effect of the gene on different traits was based on linear or threshold genetic animal models using the ASReml software.

Results

The female population was composed of 71% homozygous wild type ewes (++), 27% heterozygous ewes for the FecL mutation (L+) and 2% homozygous mutant (LL) ewes. On average, L + ewes produced 0.5 more lambs per lambing than ++ ewes. The FecL gene not only affected the mean litter size but also its variability, which was lower for ++ than for L + ewes. Fertility after insemination was higher for L + ewes than for ++ ewes. Lambs from ++ dams were heavier (+300 g) than the lambs of L + dams and the mortality of twin lambs born from ++ dams was lower than those from L + dams. In addition, bias in estimated breeding values for prolificacy when ignoring the existence of this major gene was quantified.

Conclusions

The effect of the FecL gene on prolificacy was estimated more accurately and we show that this gene affects both the mean and the variability of litter size and other traits. This paper also shows that ignoring the existence of this major gene in genetic evaluation of prolificacy can lead to a large overestimation of polygenic breeding values.  相似文献

Low pasture allowance during gestation affects ewes’ BW at parturition, the bond with their lamb, lamb development, and thus also may affect their responses to weaning. The objectives were to determine if native pasture allowance from before conception until late pregnancy affects ewe–lamb behaviours at lambing, ewes’ milk yield, lambs’ BW, and the behavioural and physiological changes of ewes and lambs at weaning. From 23 days before conception until 122 days of pregnancy, 24 ewes grazed on two different native pasture allowances: high (10 to 12 kg of dry matter (DM)/100 kg of BW per day; HPA treatment; n=12) or low (5 to 8 kg of DM/100 kg of BW per day; LPA treatment; n=12). Thereafter, all ewes grazed on Festuca arundinacea and received rice bran and crude glycerine. Ewes’ body condition score (BCS) and BW were recorded during pregnancy and postpartum periods. Milk yield was determined on days 32, 41 and 54 after lambing. Lambs’ BW was recorded from birth until 72 days after lambing. Latency from parturition until the ewe licked her lamb, maternal behaviour score (a test that evaluates maternal attachment to the lamb) and latency for lamb to stand up and suckle were determined. The behaviour of the lambs and ewes was recorded before and after weaning (at 65 days). The ewes’ serum total protein, albumin and globulin concentrations were measured before and after weaning. The HPA ewes presented greater BW (P<0.005) and BCS (P<0.005) than the LPA ewes during pregnancy and postpartum (P<0.04), and had a greater milk yield than the LPA ewes (P<0.03). Treatments did not influence any behaviour at lambing, lambs’ BW, neither the ewes’ behavioural and physiological changes at weaning. HPA lambs paced and vocalized more than LPA lambs (P<0.0001). The variation of albumin concentration before and after weaning was greater in the HPA lambs than in the LPA lambs (P<0.0001). In conclusion, although ewes’ BW, BCS and milk production were affected by pasture allowance until late pregnancy, this did not affect the behaviours that lead to the establishment of the mother–young bond, nor the ewes’ behavioural responses at weaning. Lambs reared by ewes that grazed on low pasture allowance during pregnancy presented fewer behavioural changes and a lower decrease of albumin concentration after weaning. Lambs’ BW was not affected by the feeding received by their mothers.  相似文献

Maternal undernutrition during gestation can condition offspring adult health, with the periconceptional period pointed out as a key period. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of maternal periconceptional undernutrition on pregnancy and offspring growth performance in sheep.52 Merinos d'Arles ewes were fed to requirements (control group, C), whereas 64 ewes received 50% of their dietary needs from −15 to +30 days post-conception (restricted group, R). Thereafter, both groups were fed according to needs. Maternal body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS) and Non Esterified Fatty Acids (NEFA), progesterone, leptin and cortisol plasma concentrations were monitored weekly during the restriction period and the following month, then monthly until weaning. Lambs were weighed weekly until weaning at 22 kg BW, then monthly. Plasma leptin was monitored monthly in lambs. The BW, BCS, and leptin concentrations were significantly decreased, whereas NEFA and cortisol concentrations were increased in R dams. Maximum progesterone concentration was higher in R ewes that had a high (10-25%) vs. low (0-10%) BW loss during restriction (27.9 ± 2.59 vs. 20.8 ± 2.00 ng/mL, P < 0.05). Overall, gestation was significantly longer in the R group (151.0 ± 0.3 vs. 149.4 ± 0.4 days, P < 0.001). There was no difference between groups for pregnancy rates, prolificacy, birth weight and lamb mortality, but the proportion of male lambs was significantly higher in the R group, only for singletons (16/26 vs. 9/26, P < 0.05). Lamb growth was not significantly modified by treatment. Leptin concentrations at birth were significantly lower in R vs. C males (6.15 ± 0.13 ng/mL vs. 7.42 ± 0.36 ng/mL, P < 0.05), whereas in females, leptin concentrations were significantly higher in R vs. C lambs at 4 mo of age (7.31 ± 0.27 ng/mL vs. 6.41 ± 0.29 ng/mL, P < 0.05).These results indicate that maternal periconceptional undernutrition in a hardy breed does not significantly affect lamb birth weight and growth rates, in contrast to previous reports in other breeds, suggesting that caution must be taken when extrapolating programming data between breeds and breeding conditions.  相似文献

The relationship between mothers' and daughters' dominance ranks was studied in a captive herd of mouflon sheep ( Ovis gmelini ), including nine adult ewes and their daughters, observed as lambs and yearlings. We found a positive correlation between the ranks of mothers and those of their yearling daughters, even though every mother dominated all the yearlings. We then tested the hypothesis that daughters from subordinate ewes became subordinate within their own age class because, as lambs, they had received more aggression from the other ewes in the herd. Recorded data were inconsistent with the hypothesis, even showing a trend for female lambs to receive aggression more frequently when born from dominant ewes. We also tested the hypothesis that resemblance between mothers' and daughters' ranks was due to inheritance of aggressiveness. No significant correlation was found between mothers' and daughters' aggressiveness, so the hypothesis was not supported. Finally, we found a significant concordance between mothers' ranks, daughters' ranks, and daughters' birth dates. Earlier-born daughters became dominant over later-born ones, probably because of larger body size and more advanced social behaviour. The age of most of the mothers was undetermined, but in mouflon sheep, older ewes generally dominate younger ewes and are known to lamb earlier during the birth season. Accordingly, it is suggested that dominant ewes have daughters dominant in their own age class, because (1) age influences the parturition date during the birth season, and (2) age strongly influences rank, even in individuals born during the same lambing season.  相似文献

The effects of prepartum peripheral anosmia on nursing activity, milk production and growth of the lambs, were assessed by comparing intact (n=10) and anosmic (n=10) multiparous Columbia and Rambouillet ewes and their single lamb during the first 2 months of lactation. Intact mothers only nursed their own lamb (98%) while most of the nursing activity in anosmic mothers concerned alien lambs (78%). On the other hand, the total duration and the frequencies of nursing did not differ significantly between groups (P>0.05). Nevertheless, the total percentage of nursing of own lamb by anosmic mothers (22%) was higher than expected at random (10%). Milk production or lambs' weights did not differ between groups. We conclude that prepartum anosmia resulted in the failure of ewes to develop true selective nursing up to the 8th week of lactation, although some preferential mother-young relationship yet developed. On the other hand, it did not affect significantly overall nursing activity.  相似文献
