  • 1.1. A low molecular weight metal-binding protein was found in the snail Nassarius reticulatus cytosol, which was induced in heavy metal contaminated environments.
  • 2.2. In our sodium dodecyl sulfate-mercaptoethanol polyacrylamide gel systems it behaved as a protein of 19 kDa mol. wt.
  • 3.3. Amino acid composition studies definitely established this protein not to be metallothionein (Mt) like, because it had a much lower level of cysteine and substantial amounts of aromatic amino acids and histidine.
  • 4.4. The metal-binding strength of this protein was concluded to be much weaker than that of Mt.
  • 5.5. In the crustacean Pagurus bernhardus L. such a protein could not be demonstrated.
  • 6.6. In both the snail and the crustacean Zn may inhibit the accumulation of Hg. The premise for studying the induction of the metal-binding Nassarius protein as a supplement to environmental metal monitoring purposes is briefly discussed.

  • 1.1. A comparison was made of the mechanical performance of heart muscle from mouse, an atricial mammal, with corticosterone as glucocorticoid and spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus), a precocial mammal, with cortisol as glucocorticoid.
  • 2.2. Force-frequency responses were negative in mouse and positive in spiny mouse.
  • 3.3. During recovery, there was a gradual increase and an overshoot in the mouse, while in the spiny mouse there was an initial enhanced response, diminishing gradually with time.
  • 4.4. High calcium concentration inhibited contractile tension in mouse heart, while it was positively inotropic in spiny mouse heart. Changes in the concentration of calcium did not change the patterns of force-frequency response.
  • 5.5. Lowering the experimental temperature increased the time course and amplitude of the tension curve. However, various parameters exhibited different temperature sensitivity.

  • 2.2. The intracellular levels of ATP, ADP and 5-phosphoribosyl-l-pyrophosphate (PRPP) increased markedly during the 24 hr which followed the addition of Pi (1.25mM).

  • 1.The levels of water, Na, K, Ca and Mg in blood serum, brain and kidney and aldosterone level in blood of Naja haje haje were studied during the different phases of the annual cycle.
  • 2.The water content in the tissues studied displayed only minor changes as the animals passed from one phase to the other.
  • 3.A significant increase in Na was recorded in the brain during the different phases indicating a depressed sodium pump, whereas the blood Na level showed a significant decrease during hibernation.
  • 4.K increased in blood serum, brain and kidney during hibernation, while a nonsignificant decrease was found in blood serum during arousal. The brain may act as a potassium reservoir.
  • 5.An increase in Ca and Mg concentration was recorded in blood serum, brain and kidney during prehibernation and hibernation. The data suggested a homeostatic function in the transport and metabolism of these cations.
  • 6.Aldosterone exhibited a highly significant decrease especially during hibernation. The aldosterone regulation of ionic composition is discussed.
  • 7.Na/K and Ca/Mg ratios in the brain may explain the decreased excitability during winter torpor.
