The research presented here offers new information on the recent evolution of Khoisan populations of southern Africa through the new study of Holocene skeletons. When combined with subfossil and historical remains, these archeological specimens provide a skeletal record for the last 5000–9000 years of southern African prehistory. Multivariate statistical analyses of cranial measurements were used to determine patterns of morphological variation in the skeletal record with which hypotheses of biocultural evolution were tested. These analyses yielded the following results. First, the traditional distinction between Bushmen and Hottentots holds for recent inland individuals. Second, there is a suggestion of a morphologically distinct San population living on the coast of South Africa. The idea of a “Strandloper” population suggested by early scholars is here revived. The third result is that there is little evidence of complete population succession on the coast of South Africa, suggesting that there were no massive population movements associated with the spread of Hottentot pastoralism throughout southern Africa. 相似文献

Egypt, Kenya and Malawi, have the earliest recorded history of fish farming in eastern Africa, dating back to the beginning of the century. Between 1940 and 1960 aquaculture started in Rwanda, Uganda Zambia, Zimbabwe and Tanzania in that order. Overall, Egypt is the leader in aquaculture development in the region with an estimated annual production of 24 000t (1982), followed by Zambia, 1680t (1967), then Kenya, 1085t (1985). The main aquaculture systems in practice are: monoculture, polyculture, using tilapia as the main species, mono or polyculture of tilapia with animal husbandry and rice-cum-fish culture. Aquaculture research and training are carried out in Universities, research institutions and Government Fisheries Training colleges. The major common constraints to aquaculture development are biological, infrastructural and economic. 相似文献

Univariate analysis of tsetse habitat in the common fly belt of Southern Africa using climate and remotely sensed vegetation data 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Abstract Tsetse are vectors of trypanosomes that cause diseases both in humans and livestock. Traditional tsetse surveys, using sampling methods such as Epsilon traps and black screen fly rounds, are often logistically difficult, costly and time-consuming. The distribution of tsetse, as revealed by such survey methods, is strongly influenced by environmental conditions, such as climate and vegetation cover, which may be readily mapped using satellite data. These data may be used to make predictions of the probable distribution of tsetse in unsurveyed areas by determining the environmental characteristics of areas of tsetse presence and absence in surveyed areas. The same methods may also be used to characterize differences between tsetse species and subspecies. In this paper we analyse the distribution of Glossina morsitans centralis, Glossina morsitans morsitans and Glossina pallidipes in southern Africa with respect to single environmental variables. For G.m.centralis the best predictions were made using the average NDVI (75% correct predictions; range > 0.37) and the average of the maximum temperature (70% correct predictions; 27.0–29.2°C). For G.m.morsitans the best prediction was given by the maximum of the minimum temperature (84% correct predictions; range > 18.8°C), and for G.pallidipes , also by the maximum of the minimum temperature (86% correct predictions; range > 19.6 °C). Different habitats may be used for the needs of various aspects of an animal’s life. Southern Ground-Hornbill Bucorvus leadbeateri groups announce their presence within year-round territories by calling at dawn from their overnight roost sites. Knowledge on ground-hornbill roosting habits is limited. Groups roost in large trees, apparently close to where they end up after daily foraging. We investigated patterns of roost site selection and use for four Southern Ground-Hornbill groups in the Associated Private Nature Reserves, north-eastern South Africa, based on data from GPS-satellite transmitters. The number of roost sites used per month averaged 15.4 ± 4.7 across all groups, indicating little evidence of strong preferences for specific sites. This number was least when groups were breeding, decreasing throughout the early wet season (October–December) and was lowest during the late wet season (January–March) when actively breeding groups frequently roosted close to the nest (54–83% of roosts <1 000 m of the nest). As might be expected, the mean monthly number of nights per roost peaked during the breeding season (December–January). Riparian habitats were preferred for roosting during the breeding season, whereas disturbed areas, as well as Combretumand mopane-dominated habitats were preferred during the dry non-breeding season. Adequate large trees not only for nesting, but also for roosting, particularly in riparian habitats, may therefore be an important and potentially limiting factor for the successful reproduction of Southern Ground-Hornbills. 相似文献

The status of wetland inventory effort and availability of maps and other data sources is reviewed for the ten countries of southern Africa: Angola, Bostwana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The aims and strategies for inventory are discussed and the main survey methods compared. Prior to commissioning new inventory work careful collation of existing maps and imagery is recommended together with targeting of strategic inventory at Province level, reserving high resolution effort only for certain important sites. 相似文献

Abstract The distribution of Glossina morsitans centralis, Glossina morsitans morsitans and Glossina pallidipes are described in part of southern Africa, using a range of multivariate techniques applied to climate and remotely sensed vegetation data. Linear discriminant analysis is limited in its predictive power by the assumption of common co-variances in the classes within multivariate environment space. Maximum likelihood classification is one of a variety of alternative methods that do not have this constraint, and produce a better prediction, particularly when a priori probabilities of presence and absence are taken into account. The best predictions are obtained when the habitat is subdivided, prior to classification, on the basis of a bimodality detected on the third component axis of a principal component analysis. The results of the predictions were good, particularly for G.m.centralis and G.m.morsitans , which gave overall correct predictions of 92.8% and 85.1 %, with a Kappa index of agreement between the predion and the training data of 0.7305 and 0.641 respectively. For G.pallidipes , 91.7% of predictions were correct but the value of Kappa was only 0.549. Very clear differences are demonstrated between the habitats of the two subspecies Gmxentralis and G.m.morsitans. 相似文献

Globally, men and women face markedly different risks of obesity. In all but of handful of (primarily Western European) countries, obesity is much more prevalent among women than men. We examine several potential explanations for this phenomenon. We analyze differences between men and women in reports and effects of potential underlying causes of obesity—childhood and adult poverty, depression, and attitudes about obesity. We evaluate the evidence for each explanation using data collected in an urban African township in the Cape Town metropolitan area. Three factors explain the greater obesity rates we find among women. Women who were nutritionally deprived as children are significantly more likely to be obese as adults, while men who were deprived as children face no greater risk. In addition, women of higher adult socioeconomic status are significantly more likely to be obese, which is not true for men. These two factors - childhood circumstances and adult SES - can fully explain the difference in obesity rates between men and women that we find in our sample. More speculatively, in South Africa, women's perceptions of an ‘ideal’ female body are larger than men's perceptions of the ‘ideal’ male body, and individuals with larger ‘ideal’ body images are significantly more likely to be obese. 相似文献

Some 5,000 schoolboys of the Khoikhoi, Negro, “Coloured,” and Malay populations were screened with the Ishihara plates, and those with defective red-green vision were diagnosed with an anomaloscope. The findings are presented in terms of the six protan and deutan mutant alleles, a few large population-samples (e.g., Nama and Zulu) being characterized by absence of the allele for protanopia. The overall frequencies of mutants range from less than 1% to over 4%. No correspondence was found between these data and linguistic affinities of eight Bantu-speaking groups, nor between the frequencies of colorblindness and previously estimated proportions of San genes in these eight populations; on the other hand, a north-south cline of increasing frequencies of mutants and of dichromacies among the Bantu-speakers was noted. The overall frequency of defective red-green vision among Cape Coloureds, 3.3%, is compatible with previously estimated racial composition of this population. The Malay sample is characterized by the highest frequency of protan mutants (2%), a 1:1 protan-deutan ratio, and an overall frequency of 4% of red-green defects. The study illustrates the potential value of anomaloscopic characterization of colorblindness in attempts to evaluate human evolutionary processes. 相似文献

Topographic heterogeneity as a determinant of insect diversity pattern has been little studied. Responses of grasshopper assemblages
to three hill sizes were assessed in the arid Succulent Karoo, South Africa. This area is one of the world’s 25 hotspots for
conservation priorities. Small hills overall were more speciose than medium or large hills. There were also significantly
higher densities of small-sized grasshoppers on small hills than on medium or large ones. The slopes of the three hill sizes
did not differ significantly either in their species richness or abundance, and there was no significant difference in species
richness between summits only of the three hill sizes. Patterns of grasshopper species dominance were markedly variable among
sites, but with clear differences between small and larger hills, associated with vegetation characteristics. Vegetation cover
and grass cover was less on the small hills. Grasshopper taxonomic groups varied among the three hill sizes, with small hills
being taxonomically more diverse, supporting species from four families and nine subfamilies, while medium and large hills
only supported Acrididae. It is concluded that topography has a remarkably strong effect on various aspects of grasshopper
spatial heterogeneity and that small hills in particular are a major factor to consider in spatial conservation planning. 相似文献

The Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis Lmk. has been identified on the west coast of southern Africa using morphological and biochemical-genetic comparisons with samples of “pure” M. edulis L. from Denmark and M. galloprovincialis from the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Our results show that the southern African Mytilus more closely resembles M. galloprovincialis in anterior adductor, posterior adductor and hinge size. It also has a more ventrally located maximal shell width like the Mediterranean mussel. The electrophoretic examination of 23 proteins showed that many alleles diagnostic for M. galloprovincialis appeared in the southern African Mytilus. Nei's genetic distance between the southern African Mytilus and M. galloprovincialis was 0.010 ± 0.004 and the average genetic distance between these samples and M. edulis was 0.162 ± 0.077.The presence of M. galloprovincialis in southern Africa could be explained by biogeographic dispersal along the west coast of Africa during Pleistocene cooling, or by a recent inadvertant or intentional introduction by man. To test these two hypotheses, we examined ≈750 mussel shells collected from Koi-san middens and ≈350 shells from a raised-beach deposit all located on the west coast of Cape Province, South Africa. The ages of these deposits range from 1500 yr to 120000 yr and pre-date the arrival of Europeans to the Cape. This examination did not reveal any shells of Mytilus. We, therefore, conclude that the introduction of M. galloprovincialis to southern Africa was a recent event. We suggest that, since the first confirmed reference to Mytilus in southern Africa was made from a 1972 collection, the introduction occurred within the last two decades. 相似文献

The human cranium recovered at Florisbad in 1932 is compared with other Sub-Saharan African hominid remains from Broken Hill, the Omo and Klasies River Mouth. The Florisbad frontal is very broad, but despite this breadth and differences in zygomatic form, there is a definite resemblance to archaic Homo sapiens from Broken Hill. There is also some similarity to both Omo I and Omo II, while fragmentary remains from Klasies River are more lightly built and hence more modern in appearance. These impressions are strengthened by measurement and statistical analysis, which demonstrates that Florisbad and Broken Hill are distant from recent African populations. Even if Florisbad is less archaic than the earlier (Middle Pleistocene?) hominid, it is not noticeably Bushman-like. New dates suggestive of early Upper Pleistocene antiquity also place Florisbad securely in a lineage containing Broken Hill, and there is no evidence to support special ties with any one group of living Africans. 相似文献

Thick accumulations of consolidated cow dung occur in ancientkraals (byres or corrals) in the bushveld and highveld areas of Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa dating from the last 2000 years. They originated from long-term cattle herding by Iron Age people. The vitrified or baked dung deposits are thought to be a product of the burning of cow dung as fuel, either for domestic purposes or for iron smelting. In order to establish the palaeoecological potential of this material, 36 samples of cow dung from archaeological sites within the present-day savanna and grassland biomes were analyzed for pollen and other microfossils. Of the samples, 29 contained pollen together with other microfossils that support a faecal origin of the material such as sordariaceous ascospores,Thecaphora, Gelasinospora, andChaetomium, and eggs of the intestinal parasiteTrichuris. Similar microfossils were also found in recent fresh cow dung from the same study areas. The presence of pollen grains and spores in most of the Iron Age samples lead to the assumption that they survived the burning because fire temperatures were not high enough to destroy them. Pollen in these cow dung pieces is apparently sealed and can be preserved under open-air conditions at sites under which pollen in other deposits like soils, will decay away. Good pollen preservation and palynomorph diversity were found with mainly Poaceae, and secondly Chenopodiaceae and Cyperaceae as the most important pollen types, while trees and shrubs indicating savanna are rare. In the case of the samples that came from the subtropical savanna biome the latter result is unexpected and suggests that the cattle were kept in more open vegetation than the woody environments of today. Recent cow dung samples reflect the composition of present-day vegetation by showing considerably higher proportions of tree pollen than the fossil assemblages. 相似文献

The debate between the proponents of the Recent African Origin and the Multiregional Evolution models for the origin of anatomically
modern humans has not been of great importance to the interpretation of late Pleistocene human fossils in South Africa. The
main reason is that both models propose that evidence of anatomically moderns should happen in South Africa at an early date.
A more important issue to the African context is whether or not those early transitions to modernity were accompanied by the
development of the distinctive local populations known today as the Khoisan. Serogenetic evidence suggests a relative antiquity
for the origins of living Khoisan peoples, but this may simply reflect the longer time that anatomically modern peoples have
lived in the sub-continent. A search for features of distinctive Khoisan morphology in the early remains may be of more value
as it might indicate the presence of a local adaptive pattern to the special environment conditions of the region. 相似文献

Rapid and spatially concentrated urbanization in South Africa has brought with it significant health and safety hazards. These hazards are described and analyzed through two optics: environmental rights and community participation. The rights perspective suggests that the system of apartheid led to a collapse of rural livelihoods, driving people to the cities, while apartheid's tight control over African residential location and employment ensured that high density settlement and unemployment would follow. The resulting urban environmental degradation and health and safety hazards are a violation of the human rights of the African residents of townships and informal settlements. The community participation perspective suggests that reconstruction can be linked to development and that community-based hazard identification and mitigation can be a vehicle for kick-starting urban revitalization. 相似文献

The skates (Family Rajidae) have 12 genera and possibly 28 species off southern Africa (southern Angola, Namibia, South Africa
and Mozambique). The geographic and bathymetric distribution and the taxonomic composition of the southern African skate fauna
are analysed and the distribution mapped. The southern African skate fauna is best known off the temperate west coast of South
Africa from the intertidal to approximately 1,200 meters, but poorly known below 1,200 m and sketchily known in warm-temperate
and tropical parts of the area. Southern African skates of the temperate continental shelves above 100 m are not diverse and
regularly include one species of the genus Dipturus, one species of Leucoraja, two species of Raja (including R. straeleni, the most abundant skate in southern African waters) and the giant skate Rostroraja alba. All of these skates are ‘shelf overlap’ species that range onto the outer shelves and uppermost slopes, and none are confined
to inshore environments. Skate diversity increases on the outer shelves and upper slopes. At least half of the skate species
are endemic to the southern African region; other species also occur off East or West Africa, a few extend to European waters,
and records of one species, Amblyraja taaf, appear to be of strays from nearby sub-Antarctic seas. The genus Bathyraja and softnose skate group (Arhynchobatinae) are surprisingly limited (a single species) in deep-water off southern Africa
(unlike other regions including the Antarctic), and almost all of southern African skates are members of the Rajinae. Amongst
rajines, the tribes Amblyrajini (Amblyraja, two species, Leucoraja, two species, and Rajella, five species) Rajini (Dipturus, six species, Okamejei, one species, Raja, two species, and Rostroraja, one species), and Anacanthobatini (Anacanthobatis, two species, and Cruriraja, three species) predominate, while Gurgesiellini has a species of Neoraja and possibly two of Malacoraja. 相似文献

The distribution of pollen in marine sediments is used to record vegetation changes over the past 30,000 years on the adjacent
continent. A transect of marine pollen sequences from the mouth of the river Congo (∼5°S) to Walvis Bay and Lüderitz (∼25°S)
shows vegetation changes in Congo, Angola and Namibia from the last glacial period into the Holocene. The comparison of pollen
records from different latitudes provides information about the latitudinal shift of open forest and savannahs (Poaceae pollen),
the extension of lowland forest (rain forest pollen) and Afromontane forest (Podocarpus pollen), and the position of the desert fringe (pollen of Caryophyllaceae, Chenopodiaceae and Amaranthaceae). High Cyperaceae
pollen percentages in sediments from the last glacial period off the mouth of the river Congo suggest the presence of open
swamps rather than savannah vegetation in the Congo Basin. Pollen from Restionaceae in combination with Stoebe-type pollen (probably from Elytropappus) indicates a possible northwards extension of winter rain vegetation during the last glacial period. The record of Rhizophora (mangrove) pollen is linked to erosion of the continental shelf and sea-level rise. Pollen influx is highest off river mouths
(10–2000 grains year−1 cm−2), close to the coast (300–6000 grains year−1 cm−2), but is an order of magnitude lower at sites situated far from the continent (<10 grains year−1 cm−2). 相似文献

The ecology of the blindsnake, Typhlops punctatus punctatus in five selected study plots in the River Niger Delta (Port Harcourt, Nigeria) was investigated. A total of 207 specimens were collected, 43% occurring under stones, 30% under leaf litter and 15% under logs. The number of snakes found under cover objects was significantly influenced by the number of cover objects lifted up. GLM analysis revealed that there was no difference in terms of number of snakes observed, once the relative effect of the different number of cover objects lifted up was taken into account, either among study plots or among types of cover objects. These snakes appeared to have a strong affinity for loamy soils, with moisture content of 8–18%, high organic matter (1–6%) and slightly acid pH of 5.4–6.9. Stomach content analysis revealed that these snakes fed mainly upon ants and termites. A case of predation by the toad Bufo maculatus on a juvenile blindsnake was also reported. 相似文献

An Ultrastructural Study of Melanocytes and Melanosomes in the Skin and Hair Bulbs of Rufous Albinos

We have examined hair bulb and skin melanocytes of rufous albinos from Southern Africa to further characterize this form of albinism. In the skin melanocytes we find both eumelanosomes and pheomelanosomes at various stages of melanization and, in addition, there appeared to be many aberrant incompletely melanized melanosomes. On average, rufous melanosomes are 30% smaller than normal black skin melanosomes. In the keratinocytes, the melanosomes are packaged into distinct aggregations, whereas in normal black skin, they occur singly. We suggest that the reddish skin color of these albinos is a consequence of an increase in the pheomelanin synthesis resulting in a raised pheomelanin/eumelanin ratio and that the aggregation of melanosomes results in a skin color slightly lighter than normal. In hair bulb melanocytes, only eumelanosomes were seen and these were mostly incompletely melanized. These findings correlate with our visual observations that the hair color of Southern African albinos is very pale (light brown or ginger). Based on our observations, we speculate on the possible cause of rufous albinism. 相似文献

The conservation status of 24 threatened freshwater fishes and seven estuarine fishes from southern Africa is discussed against the background of natural and anthropogenic environmental factors. The majority of threatened species are endemic temperate forms with restricted ranges. Major threats include introduced alien fishes and a wide spectrum of environmentally destructive causes. Research on threatened species includes distribution surveys, biological and ecological studies and methods of artificial propagation. Long-term remedies based on ecosystem conservation are also being promoted. The perceptions and attitudes of nature conservation authorities are adjusting to the new challenges offish conservation. The number of threatened fishes in Africa is likely to increase in the face of escalating problems of habitat destruction and degradation. 相似文献
