The aim of the study was to investigate how zinc deficiency and supplementation effect some hematologic parameters of rats performing swimming exercise. Forty adult male Spraque-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups, zinc deficient swimming group (Group 1, n=10, zinc supplemented swimming group (Group 2, n=10), swimming control group (Group 3, n=10), and control group (Group 4, n=10). Blood samples were taken by decapitation and analyzed for the determination of erythrocyte, hemoglobin level, hematocrit, leukocyte, lymphocyte, platelet count and plasma zinc level at the end of the 4 week experiment. Erythrocyte count of group 1 was the lowest whereas erythrocyte count in group 3 was significantly lower than that in group 2 and 4 (p<0.05). Hemoglobin level of group 1 was significantly lower than that of groups 2 and 4 (p<0.05). Hematocrit was significantly lower in both group 1 and group 3 than both groups 2 and 4 (p<0.05). Lymphocyte count in group 2 was significantly higher than in all other groups (p<0.05). Platelet counts in group 2 was significantly lower than in all other groups (p<0.05). Our findings suggest that zinc deficiency effects the hematologic parameters mentioned negatively whereas zinc supplementation has a positive influence.  相似文献

Objective: To determine the association between several obesity indices (BMI, waist circumference, waist‐to‐hip and waist‐to‐height ratios, and abdominal height) and hematologic parameters [white blood cell (WBC) and platelet counts] among police officers. Research Methods and Procedures: The authors conducted this cross‐sectional study among 104 randomly selected officers (41 women and 63 men) from the Buffalo, NY, Police Department. Anthropometric measures were performed by clinic staff, and fasting blood samples were drawn for complete blood counts. Pearson's correlation, Student's t tests, ANOVA, analysis of covariance, and linear regression were used to assess the associations. Results: Officers ranged in age from 26 to 61 years old and were predominantly white. Among women, current smokers had significantly higher WBC counts (7.4 × 103 cells/µL ± 1.4) than former (5.2 × 103 cells/µL ± 1.4) or never smokers (5.6 × 103 cells/µL ± 1.5) (p = 0.002). Women had similar WBC counts but higher mean platelet counts than men (p = 0.005). Among women, abdominal height was positively associated with platelet count after adjustment for depression (p for trend = 0.039). Among women and men, a non‐significant step‐wise trend was observed between abdominal height and mean WBC counts before and after adjustment for smoking, race, and physical activity. No association was observed between obesity and platelet count among men. Discussion: Abdominal height was significantly associated with increased platelet counts among female officers. No significant associations were observed between obesity and WBC or platelet counts among male officers.  相似文献

Power-frequency electromagnetic fields (PF-EMFs) at 50 Hz are potential health risk factors. This study aimed to explore the effects of long-term exposure to 50-Hz PF-EMFs on general physiological conditions in Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats. During a 24-week exposure period, the body mass and water and food intake of the animals were recorded regularly. The hematologic parameters were detected every 12 weeks, and blood chemistry analyses were performed every 4 weeks. After sacrifice, morphology was identified by hematoxylin–eosin, Masson, and immunohistochemical staining. Fibrosis-related gene expression and oxidative stress status were also detected. Compared with the control group, exposure to 30, 100, or 500 μT PF-EMF did not exert any effect on body mass, food intake, or water intake. Similarly, no significant differences were found in hematologic parameters or blood chemistry analyses among these groups. Furthermore, morphological assays showed that exposure to PF-EMFs had no influence on the structure of the liver or kidney. Finally, fibrosis-related gene expression and oxidative stress status were unaltered by PF-EMF exposure. The present study indicates that 24 weeks of exposure to PF-EMFs at intensities of 30, 100, or 500 μT might not affect hemograms, blood chemistry, fibrosis, or oxidative stress in the liver or kidney in SD rats. © 2020 Bioelectromagnetics Society  相似文献

The goal of this study was to determine the effects of Fe supplementation on the anemia of Cu deficiency in rats. In addition, we observed changes in serum and organ Cu and Fe during the development of Cu deficiency. In Experiment 1, weanling male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed AIN-93G diets containing either <0.3 mg Cu [Cu deficient (CuD)] or 6.0 mg Cu [Cu adequate (CuA)] per kilogram diet, and 35 mg Fe/kg. Five rats from each group were killed at intervals for the analysis of hematologic parameters and mineral content of various organs. In Experiment 2, two groups of 24 rats each were fed either the CuA diet or the CuD diet for 14 days. Then, three sets of eight rats in each group received three separate Fe treatments: (1) daily intraperitoneal injections of 400 mug Fe (Cu-free ferric citrate) per rat for another 14 days, (2) fed similar diets that contained three times the normal amount of Fe (105 mg/kg) for 14 days, or (3) received no further Fe treatment. At day 21, all rats were fed a 1-g meal labeled with (59)Fe to determine Fe absorption. After 28 days, rats were killed for the analyses of Fe and Cu status. Results of Experiment 1 showed that within 14 days, CuD rats had lower blood hemoglobin (Hgb), red blood cell count, and mean corpuscular volume than CuA rats. Copper concentrations in all tissues measured were lower in the CuD rats than in controls. Serum ceruloplasmin (Cp) activity in CuD rats was only 0.8% of CuA rats at day 7. During this period, enterocyte and liver Fe concentrations were elevated and serum Fe was reduced, but there was no change in spleen Fe. Results of Experiment 2 showed that CuD rats absorbed less Fe than CuA rats. Supplemental Fe by diet or by intraperitoneal injections did not prevent anemia in the CuD rats or affect other parameters of Cu status. Serum total iron binding capacity [transferrin (Tf)] was not changed by Cu deficiency or by Fe supplementation; however, percent Tf saturation was reduced in CuD rats but was not enhanced by Fe supplementation. These data suggest that anemia of Cu deficiency occurs because of reduced Fe absorption, and it inhibits release of Fe from the liver and inefficient loading of Fe into Tf because of very low plasma Cp activity. The latter then leads to inefficient delivery of Fe to the erythroid cells for heme and Hgb synthesis.  相似文献

目的:测定先天性白内障大鼠血液常规、生化正常值及血液流变学变化。方法采用XS-800i血常规分析仪和OLYMPUS AV2700生化自动分析仪对185~211 g大鼠共计90只进行血液常规和生化检测及用SA-6600自动血流变测试仪对血液进行流变学的测定。结果血像检测结果是白内障与正常对照同性比较无差异显著性(P >0.05);小眼白内障与正常对照同性比较红细胞宽度(RDW)间差异显著(P <0.01或 P <0.05)。血生化检测结果是白内障大鼠与正常对照组同性间比较白蛋白(ALB)差异显著(P <0.01或P <0.05)雌性与对照组比较尿素(Ure)差异显著(P <0.01),小眼白内障雌性与正常对照比较肌酐(Cr)差异非常显著(P <0.01)。白内障、小眼白内障大鼠的红细胞是雄性的低于雌性(P <0.05,P <0.01)而血小板是雄性的高于雌性(P <0.01),肌酐是雄性低于雌性P <0.01),正常组雄雌间无差异;血液流变学各组间无差异显著性。结论白内障大鼠与正常组大鼠间某些血常规及生化指标有一定的差异,该数据为该鼠在这领域的使用提供参考。  相似文献

We have found previously that daily treatment of male rats for 11 wk with low doses of the anticancer drug cyclophosphamide had no apparent effect on male reproductive organ weights, epididymal sperm counts, or serum hormones at the end of the treatment period; yet, upon breeding to untreated females, these males produced a high rate of post-implantation loss and fetal anomalies. The present study was designed to investigate the time course and dose response of the effects of chronic cyclophosphamide treatment on the male reproductive and hematologic systems. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were gavage-fed for 1, 3, 6 and 9 wk with saline (control), or 5.1 (low dose) or 6.8 (high dose) mg/kg/day of cyclophosphamide. After each of the treatment periods, males were mated to determine the effect on pregnancy outcome, then killed, and the effects on the male reproductive and hematologic systems were assessed. After 6 wk of treatment, a sharp increase in mortality was found between the 5.1 and 6.8 mg/kg/day doses of cyclophosphamide. The high dose of cyclophosphamide induced higher levels of pre- and post-implantation loss but fewer fetal anomalies than did the low dose. The low dose of cyclophosphamide did not affect reproductive organ weights; in contrast, the high dose caused decreases in epididymal, ventral prostate, and seminal vesicle weights after 3, 6, and 9 wk. Testicular and epididymal sperm counts were decreased in a dose-dependent manner after 3 wk; in addition, the high dose led to a decrease in epididymal sperm counts after 6 wk of treatment. Another rapidly proliferative tissue, the bone marrow, was dramatically affected by both doses of cyclophosphamide at all time points, with leukocyte counts decreasing to 40% of control by 1 wk. After 9 wk of treatment, effects on the male reproductive system were less marked, compared to earlier time points, whereas those on the hematologic system and pregnancy outcome persisted. Thus chronic low-dose treatment of male rats with cyclophosphamide not only had early and striking effects on the bone marrow and the pregnancy outcome but also affected the male reproductive system in a clear time- and dose-dependent manner.  相似文献

The study was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of eucalyptus powder (EP), virginiamycin and probiotic on performance, immunity, blood components and carcass traits of broiler chickens. A total of 250, 1-day-old male broiler chickens (Ross 308) were randomly allocated to five treatments with five replicates and 10 chicks each, as a completely randomized design. The dietary treatments consisted of: basal diet (BD), BD+0.25% EP, BD+0.5% EP, BD+0.01% of diet probiotic (Protexin), BD+0.02% of diet antibiotic (virginiamycin). Dietary supplementation did not affect feed intake, BW gain (BWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) during starter and grower phases, but BWG and FCR were affected during the finisher and whole periods (P<0.05).The highest BWG and lowest FCR were obtained in birds fed with virginiamycin and 0.5% EP. Dietary supplementation significantly increased the relative weight of carcass and breast (P<0.05). Treatments had no effect on relative weights of internal organs and small intestine except for bursa that increased by treatments. Relative length of jejunum also increased by treatments (P<0.05). Antibody production against sheep red blood cells did not changed in primary titer (day 35), but it significantly increased in secondary titer (day 42) by 0.5% EP. White blood cell counts were increased and cholesterol decreased by dietary supplementation (P<0.05). In conclusion, the results of this study showed that 0.5% EP served as a useful replacement for antibiotic and would improve performance and immune response of broiler chickens.  相似文献

Predation and food resources can strongly affect small mammal population dynamics directly by altering vital rates or indirectly by influencing behaviors. Fire may also strongly influence population dynamics of species inhabiting fire-adapted habitats because fire can alter food and cover availability. We used capture–mark–recapture and radio-telemetry studies to experimentally examine how supplemental feeding, mammalian predator exclusion, and prescribed fire affected survival, abundance, and reproduction of hispid cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) in southwestern Georgia, USA. Prescribed fire reduced survival, abundance, and rates of transitions to reproductive states. Food supplementation increased survival, transitions to reproductive states, and abundance, but was not sufficient to prevent post-fire declines in any of these parameters. Mammalian predator exclusion did not strongly affect any of the considered parameters. Our results show that fire strongly influenced cotton rat populations in our study site, primarily by reducing cover and increasing predation risk from non-mammalian predators.  相似文献

The performance and blood composition of rats fed housefly larvae meal supplemented with, or without, methionine and lysine, or fed at high concentration were investigated. Rats fed supplemental methionine alone achieved highest body weight gain (P < 0.05). Dietary supplementation of both methionine and lysine or high dietary concentration of larvae meal depressed (P < 0.05) rat feed intake. The blood composition of rats was superior (P < 0.05) on methionine-supplemented larvae meal. Additional amino acids from larvae elicited higher (P < 0.05) serum proteins, cholesterol and triglyceride; however, other blood biochemical profiles were lower (P < 0.05) than in the unsupplemented group. In conclusion, housefly larvae meal seemed deficient in methionine and it benefited the rat tremendously to supplement with this amino acid: however, additional lysine and high dietary inclusion of larvae meal as sole protein source appeared nutritionally inconsequential.  相似文献

Many animals, including shrikes (Laniidae), are known to store food. This behaviour ensures food availability during inclement weather, for rearing nestlings or signalling territory quality. Unlike most other shrike species, which accumulate food before breeding, Red-backed Shrikes Lanius collurio store food in larders, mainly during the nestling and fledgling periods. If this is an adaptive behaviour, variation in this behaviour should affect either or both the number and condition of nestlings, which may benefit from such larders. We assessed the haematological condition of Red-backed Shrike nestlings in east-central Poland in 2021 using a suite of blood parameters relating to sites where shrikes did or did not store food. Haemoglobin concentrations were positively correlated with larders, being significantly higher in nestlings of pairs that stored prey compared with those whose parents did not do so. White blood cell counts were lower in nestlings whose parents kept larders. Red blood cell counts and glucose concentrations in nestlings were not related to whether parents had larders. Food storage probably ensures a more constant access to food, which results in a superior haematological condition in nestlings.  相似文献

To determine the effect of dietary protein level on experimental hyperhomocysteinemia, rats were fed 10% casein (10C) and 40% casein (40C) diets with or without 0.5% guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) for 14 d. In addition, rats were fed 10C + 0.75% methionine (10CM) and 40C + 0.75% methionine (40CM) diets with or without 2.5% serine for 14 d to determine the relationship between the dietary protein level and intensity of the hypohomocysteinemic effect of serine. GAA supplementation markedly increased the plasma homocysteine concentration in rats fed with the 10C diet, whereas it did not increase the plasma homocysteine concentration in rats fed with the 40C diet. Although serine supplementation significantly suppressed the methionine-induced enhancement of plasma homocysteine concentration, the decreased plasma homocysteine concentration was significantly lower in rats fed with the 40CM diet than in rats fed with the 10CM diet. The hepatic cystathionine β-synthase and betaine-homocysteine S-methyltransferase activities were significantly higher in rats fed with the 40C or 40CM diet than in rats fed with the 10C or 10CM diet, irrespective of supplementation with GAA and serine. These results indicate that the high-casein diet was effective for both suppressing GAA-induced hyperhomocysteinemia and potentiating the hypohomocysteinemic effect of serine, probably through the enhanced activity of homocysteine-metabolizing enzymes.  相似文献

Salinity can affect the quantity and quality of total amino acids (TAAs) in seaweeds indirectly by altering growth rates and thereby diluting or concentrating the amino acid content of the biomass, or directly by altering the synthesis of specific amino acids and osmolytes. This study attempted to partition the indirect and direct effects of salinity on the quantity and quality of TAAs in the green seaweed Ulva ohnoi by culturing it under a range of salinities without nutrient limitation. Both the quantity and quality of TAAs varied across the salinity treatments. Quantity was most strongly related to the growth rate of the seaweed and was highest in the slowest growing seaweed. In contrast, the quality of TAAs (individual amino acids as a proportion of total content) was most strongly related to salinity for all amino acids, although this varied substantially among individual amino acids. Increases in salinity were positively correlated with the proportion of proline (46% increase), tyrosine (36% increase), and histidine (26% increase), whereas there was a negative correlation with alanine (29% decrease). The proportion of methionine, with strong links to the synthesis of the osmolyte dimethylsulfoniopropionate, did not correlate linearly with salinity and instead was moderately higher at the optimal salinities for growth. These results show that salinity simultaneously affects the quantity and quality of TAAs in seaweed through both indirect and direct mechanisms, with growth rates playing the overarching role in determining the quantity of TAAs.  相似文献

Zinc (Zn) is an essential mineral for animal development and function. A study was carried out to evaluate the effect of sex and dietary organic zinc (OZ) on growth performance, carcass traits, tissue mineral content, and blood parameters of broiler chickens. A total of 240 1-day-old male and 240 female broiler chicks (Cobb × Cobb) were assigned to two dietary levels of OZ (2 × 2 factorial) with six replicates per treatment (20 birds/replicate pen). The OZ supplementation levels were 0 and 25 ppm. Results showed that OZ supplementation did not affect the growth performance of male and female broilers, but the males showed significantly better (P < 0.05) growth performance than females did. Similarly, OZ supplementation did not affect the thickness of both the back and thigh skin of male and female broilers; however, males had thicker skin than females. Dietary OZ supplementation did not affect collagen contents in the skin and meat samples. Male broilers had higher skin collagen contents than females, but no sex difference was found in meat collagen contents. OZ supplementation did not affect the shear force values of skin and meat samples. Male broilers had higher shear force values of back skin than females, but not in the meat samples. Dietary OZ supplementation increased (P < 0.05) the thigh meat Zn content in both sexes. The plasma Ca content was significantly (P < 0.05) increased by dietary OZ supplementation; however, other blood parameters were not affected by dietary OZ supplementation. Males had higher plasma glucose and cholesterol content than females. It is concluded that dietary OZ supplementation at the level of 25 ppm does not affect the growth performance and skin quality of broiler chickens but increases the Zn content in thigh meat and Ca content in plasma of broiler chickens. Male broilers had better growth performance and skin quality than females.  相似文献

An experiment was performed to determine the effect of diethyl maleate (DEM), and in vivo depletor of glutathione, on the response of male and female rats to arsenic deprivation. A 2×2×2 factorially arranged experiment used groups of six weanling Sprague-Dawley rats. Dietary variables were arsenic at 0 or 0.5 μg/g and DEM at 0 or 0.25%; the third variable was gender. Animals were fed for 10 wk a casein-ground corn based diet that contained amounts of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium similar to the AIN-76 diet. DEM supplementation increased blood arsenic in both male and female rats; female rats had the greatest amount of arsenic in whole blood. Although female rats in general had a lower concentration of glutathione in liver, those fed no supplemental DEM, regardless of their arsenic status, had the lowest amounts. Compared to males, female rats had a lower activity of liver glutathione S-transferase (GST). Arsenic deprivation decreased, and DEM supplementation increased liver GST activity in both male and female rats. Lung GST activity was also increased by DEM supplementation in male, but not female, rats. The most striking finding of the study was that compared to males, females had extremely elevated kidney calcium concentrations, and that the elevation was exacerbated by arsenic deprivation. DEM supplementation also exacerbated the accumulation of calcium in the kidney of the female rats. The response of the rat to both DEM and arsenic was, for many variables, dependent on gender. This gender dependence may be explained by the differences in methionine metabolism between male and female rats. Thus, arsenic deprivation apparently can manifest itself differently depending on gender.  相似文献

目的:转基因棉籽对SD大鼠亚慢性毒性的研究。方法:选取出生6-8周的SPF级SD大鼠140只,雌雄各半,按体重随机分成7组,分别连续饲喂含普通棉籽5%、2.5%和1.25%的饲料和含转基因棉籽5%、2.5%和1.25%的饲料以及基础饲料30天。实验过程中监测动物体重、进食量和进水量,结束后分别测定各组动物的血常规、血生化、脏体指数等指标。结果:实验期间各组动物均生长发育良好,无中毒死亡现象发生。实验组实验动物的各项指标与对照组相比,无显著性差异(P≥0.05)。结论:本研究未发现转基因棉籽对实验动物有亚慢性毒性。  相似文献

Effect of dietary selenium as sodium selenite on in vivo hematological parameters of Sprague-Dawley rats was examined over a 7-month period. Dietary selenium did not alter total hemoglobin, hematocrits, erythrocyte counts, or the osmotic fragility pattern of rat blood. Selenium-excessive (1.0 ppm) rats showed slightly lower but not significantly lower methemoglobin levels than selenium-adequate (0.1 ppm) or selenium-deficient rats. Platelet counts tended to be higher in selenium-excessive rats and lower in selenium-deficient rats than in selenium-adequate rats, but the differences were not statistically significant. No clear trends were observed regarding the effect of dietary selenium on total leukocyte and differential leukocyte counts. After 7 months of dietary treatment blood glutathione peroxidase activity in selenium-deficient rats and in selenium-excessive rats was 16.8% and 142.2% of the activity in selenium-adequate rats. The results indicate that long-term selenium deficiency in rats produces no abnormal hematological parameters or any compensated hemolytic anemia in vivo.  相似文献

Hematology is a common tool for wildlife health assessments. Manual leukocyte counts are required in reptiles, however, disagreement between quantification methods has been observed in some chelonians. This study determined agreement between two methods of leukocyte quantification, eosinophilic leukopet, and blood film white blood cell (WBC) estimates, in free-living eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina). Simultaneously, we assessed the impact of handling duration on both leukocyte quantity and corticosterone levels. We collected blood at capture (<2 min from disturbance) and again before release 30–150 min later from 92 box turtles at six sites in Illinois and Tennessee. Constant and proportional error was present in the leukopet results for WBC, lymphocytes, and basophils compared to the estimate method. Both methods were in agreement for heterophils, monocytes, and eosinophils. Agreement between the methods was significantly more likely at WBC counts below 23,241/µl. All hematologic parameters were significantly higher at the final blood draw compared to the initial blood draw using both WBC determination methods, except relative eosinophil and basophil counts. Corticosterone levels varied with time, with maximum concentrations reached at 54 min postcapture, followed by a rapid return to baseline levels. Corticosterone level was not significantly associated with any hematologic parameter or sex. This study provides a framework for understanding the effects of animal handling methodology and diagnostic modality when evaluating hematologic health in box turtles.  相似文献

Complete and differential blood counts were conducted on 23 male squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) of Bolivian origin. The sample included 9 laboratory-bred and 14 wild-caught adult monkeys weighing between 600 and 1,500 g. The means of total white blood cell (WBC) counts, total hemoglobin and hematocrits of laboratory-bred animals were found to be significantly different from those of wild-caught monkeys (p less than 0.01). Other hematologic parameters showed no significant differences between the two experimental groups. 3 of 14 (21.0%) wild-caught animals each had 1 reactive lymphocyte and 7% of the same group had 10 nucleated erythrocytes per 100 WBC. No reactive lymphocytes or nucleated erythrocytes were observed in laboratory-bred animals. The importance of these baseline data and the basis for the differences observed between laboratory and wild-caught monkeys are discussed within the context of experimental studies involving primates in which hematologic parameters are valuable.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of ascorbic acid supplementation in drinking water on semen quality, lipid peroxidation and plasma testosterone level of male rats. In this investigation, 24 male Wistar rats were used. The animals were divided into three group, and 500, 250 and 0 (control) mg/kg/day ascorbic acid were supplemented with drinking water of rats in Groups A, B and C during 8 weeks, respectively. Ascorbic acid supplementation did not increase in the body weight and weights of the testis, epididymis, seminal vesicles and ventral prostate. Exogenous supplementation with ascorbic acid significantly increased (P<0.05) the concentration of ascorbic acid in the testes and blood plasma, and the level of lipid peroxidation significantly decreased (P<0.05) in these locations. There was no significant difference in spermatozoon motility among the three groups. However, epididymal sperm concentration and plasma testosterone level significantly increased (P<0.05) in the ascorbic acid treated animals when compared to the control animals. The results suggest that ascorbic acid supplementation improves reproductive traits of male rats that are associated with high fertility.  相似文献

Cytauxzoon felis is a long-recognized hemoparasite of free-ranging Florida panthers (Puma concolor coryi), but its prevalence and effect on the population has not been assessed. Red blood cell indices and white blood cell counts were compared between infected and noninfected Florida panthers and Texas cougars (Puma concolor stanleyana) from 1983-1997 in Florida (USA). The prevalence of cytauxzoonosis for both populations was 39% (11/28) for Texas cougars, 35% for Florida panthers (22/63) and 36% overall. Thirteen hematologic parameters were compared between C. felis positive and negative panthers and cougars. Florida panthers had significantly lower mean cell hemoglobin count (MCHC) and higher white blood cell (WBC), neutrophil, monocyte and eosinophil counts (P < or = 0.05) than Texas cougars. Infected Florida panthers had significantly lower mean cell hemoglobin (MCH) and monocyte counts and higher neutrophil and eosinophil counts than infected Texas cougars. Although statistically significant differences were measured for hematologic parameters in C. felis positive panthers and cougars, biologically significant differences were not likely because values were generally within expected reference ranges for healthy animals. Cytauxzoonosis does not appear to have a negative effect on the hematologic parameters of chronically infected panthers and cougars. Potential transient changes during initial infection were not evaluated.  相似文献
