The movements of nine breeding adult emperor penguins Aptenodytes forsteri from two colonies, Auster (67° 23S 64° 04E) and Taylor Glacier (67° 28S 60° 54E), were determined by satellite telemetry on their pre-moult foraging trips. While preparing for their annual moult the penguins travelled for 22–38 days and reached distances of up to 618 km from the colony. Six of the nine tracked penguins were followed to three different moult locations all to the west of their breeding colonies and near other known emperor penguins colonies, such as Kloa Point (66°38S, 59°23E) and Fold Island (67°17S, 59°23E). Sea-ice conditions changed throughout the tracking period; as the birds travelled north the sea-ice contracted south.  相似文献

The occurrence of adenosine 5-triphosphate-3-diphosphate-synthesizing activity was detected in five strains of actinomycetes; Streptomyces morookaensis, Streptomyces aspergilloides, Streptomyces hachijoensis, Actinomyces violascens and Streptoverticillium septatum, out of 825 strains of actinomycetes, bacteria, fungi and imperfecti. Purine nucleotide pyrophosphotransferase were extracellularly excreted associating with the cell growth, and were purified partially or to apparent homogeniety from the culture filtrate. The enzymes are a monomeric protein with a molecular weight of 18000–26000 and synthesize adenosine, guanosine and inosine 5-phosphate (mono, di or tri)-3-diphosphate such as pApp, ppApp, pppApp, pGpp, ppGpp, pppGpp and pppIpp by transferring a pyrophosphoryl group from the 5-position of ATP, dATP and pppApp to the 3-position of purine nucleotides in the presence of a divalent cation and in alkaline state.Abbreviations pppApp adenosine 5-triphosphate 3-diphosphate - ppApp adenosine 5-diphosphate 3-diphosphate - pApp adenosine 5-monophosphate 3-diphosphate - pppGpp guanosine 5-triphosphate 3-diphosphate  相似文献

Five small ponds on Cape Herschel, Ellesmere Island, N.W.T. (latitude 78° 37 N; 74° 42 W) were investigated, and their rotifer fauna discussed. Although the number of individuals is very low, the rotifer assemblage is remarkably rich (33 species), especially considering the harsh environmental conditions, and the short ice-free period of only six weeks. The shallow ponds are all alkaline, and the rotifer species are either cosmopolitan, or very rare. Crossing experiments were carried out between the stiped-egg form collected from Sapporo (43°04N) and Machida (35°33N), and the stipeless-egg form ofPanonychus akitanus Ehara from Tomakomai (42°37N) and Imagane (42°34N). Intra-form crosses gave a high proportion of female progeny, but inter-form crosses only male progeny, suggesting that fertilization did not take place. The number of eggs laid during the first 10 days of the oviposition period was greater in intra-form crosses than in inter-form crosses (P<0.001). The latter, except for the cross between the Sapporo and the Imagane populations, had similar egg production to virgin females (P<0.05).Mated females showed a greater daily oviposition rate than virgin females. However, the latter drastically increased their oviposition rate after mating with their sons. The two forms are thus reproductively isolated.  相似文献

The demography of the acaulescent palm Attalea humilis was studied from 1996 to 1999 in three forest fragments (1.6, 6.4, and 9.9ha) in southeastern Brazil (22°30–22°33 S, 42°15–42°19 W). A human-induced fire damaged the populations in August–September 1997. Palm density was higher in the medium-sized fragment, where it was concentrated in a single disturbed sector. Population ontogenetic stage structure was dependent on fragment and year, but in general later stages were more abundant than initial ones. Population finite growth rates projected from linear, stage-structured demographic models indicated that the populations were increasing before fire. Population growth rate in the smallest fragment was larger due to a single recruitment event, being most sensitive to changes in survival and growth of seedlings, virgins and the immature, and relatively insensitive to changes in shrinkage and fecundity. Observed growth rates for the entire study period showed that populations remained in equilibrium after fire, but the population in the medium-sized fragment showed a declining tendency. Population structure was resilient to fire, which caused a transitory concentration of individuals in the medium-sized stage. The self-sustainability of the population in the largest, most preserved fragment suggests that habitat-protection measures may suffice to ensure the persistence of populations in small fragments. However, population fluctuations and exclusion from hyper-disturbed sectors in the smallest fragment suggest that reduced fragment area, habitat degradation and human-induced fires can interact to threaten the persistence of even abundant, preadapted to fire, species like A. humilis.  相似文献

The effects of photoperiod and melatonin treatment on reproductive and immune function were assessed in two subspecies of Peromyscus maniculatus from different latitudes of origin. In experiment 1, P. m. bairidii (latitude = 42°51 N) and P. m. luteus (latitude = 30°37 N) were housed in either long (LD 168) or short days (LD 816) for 8 weeks. Short-day P. m. bairdii displayed reproductive regression and elevated splenocyte proliferation in response to the T-cell mitogen concanavalin A, as compared to long-day mice. In contrast, P. m. luteus did not undergo reproductive regression or exhibit any increase in lymphocyte proliferation in short days. In experiment 2, individuals of both P. m. bairdii and P. m. luteus were implanted with empty capsules or capsules that contained melatonin. Individual P. m. bairdii implanted with melatonin underwent reproductive regression. Individuals of this subspecies also displayed elevated lymphocyte proliferation compared to control mice. Conversely, P. m. luteus implanted with melatonin did not undergo reproductive regression and displayed no significant changes in lymphocyte proliferation. These results suggest that reproductive responsiveness to melatonin mediates short-day enhancement of immune function in deer mice. These data also imply that melatonin may not possess universal immunoenhancing properties. Rather, the effectiveness of melatonin to influence immune responses may be constrained by reproductive responsiveness to this indole-amine.  相似文献

Summary As has been shown previously, RNA polymerase subunit ts-mutation rpoC1 results in an overproduction of RNA polymerase subunits at nonpermissive temperature. The mutant enzyme shows low activity in vitro and a sedimentation coefficient 9S which is characteristic of immature core polymerase. In this paper we describe a mutation designated opr1 which suppresses RNA polymerase subunit overproduction. The mutation was found among Ts+ revertants of the Ts double mutant carrying a rpoC1 mutation and a rif-r rpo B251 mutation. Opr1 is closely linked to the original rpo mutations and shows complete trans-dominance. Although opr1 seems to affect RNA polymerase, it does not suppress the accumulation of immature 9S RNA polymerase and does not restore the activity of the RpoC1 mutant enzyme. This and other results of a comparison of strains carrying different combinations of rpoC1, rpoB251 and opr1 mutations suggest that neither inhibition of total RNA and protein synthesis, nor the low RNA polymerase activity in vitro, nor the apparent defects in enzyme maturation, nor the enzyme degradation observed at 42°C are responsible for the overproduction in RpoC1 strains.  相似文献

Brain composition and developmental changes were investigated in mice homozygous for the locus dwarf, and characterized by a reduced level of growth hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, and prolactin, and by secondary hypothyroidism. The difference in adult brain weight (–32%) between the dwarf and the normal mice was not found to parallel the difference in body weight (–71%), whereas the differences in the weight of the liver (–79%) and that of the kidney (–75%) did. Several biochemical parameters of brain development were assayed in dwarf and normal mice between the ages of 15 and 210 days. Levels of cerebrosides, sulfatides, gangliosides, phospholipids, cholesterol, protein, and RNA (per gram wet weight) were the same for the dwarf and the controls, but the net difference in total brain DNA was less than the net total brain RNA difference (–11% vs. –27%). Total brain lipids (absolute quantities) were the same at 15 days. The difference was –37% by the 50th day, and remained constant thereafter. No change in the specific activity of 2,3-cyclic nucleotide 3-phosphohydrolase or 3-phosphoadenosine-5-phosphosulfate: galactocerebroside sulfotransferase was observed. These data suggest that the regulation of the development of brain structures is maintained, but the level of the synthesis of the various brain constituents is reduced in proportion to the brain weight. Species of the genus Actinostola are known for high variability of features. Anatomy, histology and cnidae of type specimens of five species from South America and Antarctica originally described as members of Actinostola and one species of Stomphia were compared to specimens of Actinostola chilensis collected during this study. None of these traditionally used features clearly distinguish the examined Actinostola species. I therefore propose new distinctive taxonomic features, including in vivo and in situ data. I provide an emended diagnosis of the genus Actinostola and a revised list of its species. I accept the synonymy of A. excelsa, A. pergamentacea and A. intermedia with A. crassicornis, and reject the synonymy of A. chilensis with A. crassicornis and A. intermedia. I re-describe A. chilensis in detail, including in situ information. Specimens of A. chilensis inhabit exposed positions of rocky substrate from 22 m depth down in south Chilean fjords between Puerto Montt (41°3535S, 72°53W) and Puyuhuapi (44°3136S; 72°326W); the most conspicuous features are its relatively large size, bright-orange colour, smooth, tough column and numerous and clearly entacmaeic tentacles.Electronic Supplementary Material  Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at The publisher regrets that during copy-editing of this article the names of the authors of species were styled incorrectly. The sugar conformation of a DNA decamer was studied with proton-proton 3J coupling constants. Two samples, one comprising stereospecifically labeled 2-R-2H for all residues and the other 2-S-2H, were prepared by the method of Kawashima et al. [J. Org. Chem. (1995) 60, 6980–6986; Nucleosides Nucleotides (1995) 14, 333–336], the deuterium labeling being highly stereospecific 99% for all 2-2H, 98% for 2-2H of A, C, and T, and 93% for 2-2H of G). The 3J values of all H1-H2 and H1-H2 pairs, and several H2-H3 and H2-H3 pairs were determined by line fitting of 1D spectra with 0.1–0.2 Hz precision. The observed J coupling constants were explained by the rigid sugar conformation model, and the sugar conformations were found to be between C3-exo and C2-endo with m values of 26° to 44°, except for the second and 3 terminal residues C2 and C10. For the C2 and C10 residues, the lower fraction of S-type conformation was estimated from JH1H2 and JH1H2 values. For C10, the N–S two-site jump model or Gaussian distribution of the torsion angle model could explain the observed J values, and 68% S-type conformation or C1-exo conformation with 27° distribution was obtained, respectively. The differences between these two motional models are discussed based on a simple simulation of J-coupling constants.  相似文献

Laminaria abyssalis occurs in deep water in tropical latitudes of the Brazilian coast (19° 23 S, 38° 28 W to 22° 54 S, 42° 13 09 W). Its life cycle has been completed in the laboratory in seven months using different conditions of light and temperature. The gametophytic stage required for growth the low photon flux density of 1.2 ± 0.3 µmol m–2 s–1 and 18 °C, while the juvenile and adult sporophytes needed 15 µmol m–2 s–1 and 18 °C. The sporophytes became fertile at 23 °C. Our results showed that light and temperature are the main factors regulating the growth and life history of this species under the culture conditions tested.  相似文献

Our study comprises airborne pollen analysis of the years 1995–1997 of Bartn (40°38 N–32°21 E). The aims of the study were: to determine the pollen types present in the atmosphere, to calculate their actual concentrations, and to establish the pollen calendar for Bartn. For this purpose, pollen slides of Durham apparatus, which was located in four different locations in Bartn, were examined on a weekly basis. In this study, 19062 pollen grains were counted and 18484 of those were determined on the slides in the air of Bartn during three years of period. Results show that 13758 of 18484 pollen grains belong to arboreal, 4726 belong to non-arboreal taxa. 3698 of determined non-arboreal taxa belong to Gramineae.  相似文献

The gap dynamics of two Nothofagus pumilio (lenga) stands have been investigated. We evaluated and compared tree diameter distributions, spatial patterns, tree fall and gap characteristics and regeneration responses in gaps in two old-growth forests of Nothofagus pumilio in Southern Chile (Shangri-La: 36°60 S, 71°30 W; Reserva Coyhaique: 45°52 S, 72°00 W). In addition, we describe relationships between gap size and regeneration characteristics. We detected some differences in tree and sapling densities between sites. The causes of gap formation and the gap size distribution, mean gap area, and gap fraction were similar, but gap abundance was different at the two sites. The Reserva Coyhaique site had 15 gaps/ha compared to 10 gaps/ha for Shangri-La. Sizes of clumps of trees were within the range of sizes of canopy gaps at both sites. The density of saplings was higher in gaps than under closed forest at R. Coyhaique, but not at Shangri-La. We found that sapling densities were unrelated to gap size in both sites. The lower sapling density in gaps at Shangri-La might be explained by the presence of Chusquea quila, a competitive pioneer bamboo species. The height increment was related to gap size at Shangri-La, but not at R. Coyhaique. Gap size itself does not account for all the variation in recruitment performance in these Southern beech stands.  相似文献

Forty-four stream segments were sampled from May to October in 1992 and 1993 in the northwest region of São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil (19°45–21°25S, 49°05–51°30S). Thirty-six macroalgal subgeneric taxa were found and Chlorophyta was the dominant algal group (47% species), followed by Cyanophyta (33.5%), Rhodophyta (14%) and Chrysophyta (5.5%). The most widespread species wereStigeoclonium helveticum (25% sites),Batrachospermum delicatulum andCompsopogon coeruleus (20.5%). Distribution was patchy, with species number per sampling site ranging from 0 to six (3.1 ± 1.7) and correlated positively with species abundance. Species cover ranged from 0 to 61% of the stream bottom (19.1 ± 19.7%). Most sites (57%) were dominated by one or two macroalgae species. No significant difference was found between the frequency distribution of variables measured for streams and for total macroalgae, but the most widespread species differed for most parameters and occurred over wider ranges of environmental conditions. Mean species number and abundance were close to values found in distinct regions or biomes of North America. Higher conductance and lower oxygen values, as well as rocky substrata, generally constituted the most favourable combination of conditions for the development of macroalgae in the region. The pattern of strong dominance of few species was considered to be typical for stream macroalgal communities in general.  相似文献

The white rot basidiomycete Phanerochaete chrysosporium metabolized 1-(3,4-diethoxyphenyl)-1,3(dihydroxy)-2-(4'-methoxyphenyl)-propane (XII) in low nitrogen stationary cultures, conditions under which the ligninolytic enzyme system is expressed. 3,4-Diethoxybenzyl alcohol (IV), 1,2(dihydroxy)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethane (XX) and anisyl alcohol were isolated as metabolic products indicating an initial , bond cleavage of this dimer. Exogenously added XX was rapidly converted to anisyl alcohol, indicating that XX is an intermediate in the metabolism of XII. Fungal cleavage of the , bond of 1-(3-4-diethoxyphenyl)-1-(hydroxy)-2-(4'-methoxyphenyl)ethane (XI) also occurred, indicating that a hydroxymethyl group is not a prerequisite for this reaction. P. chrysosporium also metabolized 1-(4-ethoxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2,2(dihydroxy)-2-(4'-methoxyphenyl)propane-1-ol (XIII). The major products of the degradation of this triol included 4-ethoxy-3-methoxybenzyl alcohol (III) and 2-hydroxy-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-oxoethane (XXI). The nature of the products formed indicates that this triol is also cleaved directly at the , bond. The significant difference in the nature of the products formed from the diaryl propane (XII) and the triol (XIII), however, suggests that XIII is not an intermediate in the major pathway for the degradation of XII. Bacillus polymyxa grown in a recycling fermentor shows the same behavior previously observed with Escherichia coli: 3 successive growth phases. In the last 2 phases the growth rate is linear and the apparent maintenance energy demand rate and the molar growth yield are both independent of the specific growth rate, , and of the cells mass. The final phase of very slow growth is an indefinitely prolonged state of strong, stringent control, the regulatory system based on guanosine 3-diphosphate 5-diphosphate, and guanosine 3-diphosphate 5-triphosphate. The maximum cost of this stringent response is calculated to be 9% of the energy available to these energy-limited cells. There is a further energy cost contained in substantial amounts of DNA, RNA, and protein released from the cells during the latter 2 growth phases. Summary In flower extracts of defined genotypes of Petunia hybrida, an enzyme activity was demonstrated which catalyses the hydroxylation of naringenin and dihydrokaempferol in the 3-position. Similar to the flavonoid 3-hydroxylases of other plants, the enzyme activity was found to be localized in the microsomal fraction and the reaction required NADPH as cofactor. A strict correlation was found between 3-hydroxylase activity and the gene Ht1, which is known to be involved in the hydroxylation of flavonoids in the 3-position in Petunia. Thus, the introduction of the 3-hydroxyl group is clearly achieved by hydroxylation of C15-intermediates, and the concomitant occurrence of the 3,4-hydroxylated flavonoids quercetin and cyanidin (paeonidin) in the presence of the functional allele Ht1 is due to the action of one specific hydroxylase catalysing the hydroxylation of common precursors for both flavonols and anthocyanins.  相似文献

For the detection of polymorphisms within the 5-flanking region of the -lactoglobulin (-LG) -encoding gene a nucleotide sequence containing 795 bp of the promoter and 59 bp of exon I was cloned and sequenced. After comparing the sequence from the DNA of 11 diverse cows (different breeds and milk-protein yields), 14 singlebp substitutions were identified within the 5-flanking region and two in the 5-untranslated region (5-UTR) of exon I. Some of the variants are located in potential binding sites for trans-acting factors or in the 5-UTR. A PCR-based RFLP analysis was performed, and the genotypes of an additional 60 cows were identified at five variable 5-flanking sites. The results reveal three frequent combinations between the A and B alleles of the protein-coding region and the novel 5-flanking DNA variants. This finding may explain the differences of the protein-variant-dependent -LG synthesis (A>B) observed in vivo. A sequence comparison of the bovine and ovine promoters reveals an homology of 92.8% and shows a higher degree of conservation between positions -600 and -300.  相似文献

Using a protease (at 100 g l–1) from Bacillus licheniformis, enzymatic acryloylation of sucrose (1 M) with vinyl acrylate (4 M) was carried out in anhydrous pyridine and yielded sucrose acrylate esters with more than 90% of sucrose converted in 24 h. After 5 days of reaction, the ester products consisted of 70% sucrose monoacrylate and 30% sucrose diacrylate. The monoester product was a sucrose 1-acrylate and the diester products consisted of sucrose 6,1-diacrylate and sucrose 6,1-diacrylate in the ratio of 3:2.  相似文献
