Hatchery-reared juvenile Mya arenaria L. were grown for 11 wk in replicated gravel, sand, mud, and pearl net treatments under flow-through sea-water conditions in Maine. Analyses of variance showed significant differences between sediment treatments for final shell length, dry meat weight, chondrophore growth increment, and percent shell weight. Growth of juvenile M. arenaria was more rapid in fine sediments than in coarse sediments or nets.Regression slopes of shell length-shell height and shell length-shell depth varied significantly between sediment treatments. Slower-growing clams from nets and gravel were more globose than clams from sand or mud treatments. Clams grown in sand were longer and narrower than those from mud. Differences in growth rates and shell form were attributed primarily to the physical properties of the substrata, and their effects on the scope for growth of M. arenaria.  相似文献

采砂是一项具有巨大生态影响的经济活动.利用多源遥感影像描述鄱阳湖中部的采砂分布,分析其对悬浮泥沙浓度的影响.2011年7月28日的Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM)5用于采砂相关船只的识别,2009-2011年7-8月的Terra卫星中分辨率成像光谱仪(MODIS)影像用于悬浮泥沙浓度的反演,(Before-after-control-impact,BACI)方法用于采砂影响评价.Landsat TM 5影像解译结果发现鄱阳湖中部的两个采砂区和90余艘船只,MODIS Terra反演结果显示在采砂区及其下游区域悬浮泥沙浓度剧增,BACI评价结果揭示采砂是导致此区域悬浮泥沙浓度增加的主要因素.平衡经济发展与生态保护之间的关系,将因采砂而造成的负面影响降到最低,使鄱阳湖的各种生态功能全面发挥是紧要的.  相似文献

1. Sediment selection was investigated under controlled conditions in two common lake-dwelling species of freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae), Elliptio complanata and Pyganodon grandis grandis .
2. Sediment choice was determined in six independent experiments under controlled conditions by distributing mussels randomly or evenly in tanks containing patches of sand and mud, and following their movement among sediment patches in experiments lasting between 30 and 45 days.
3. In all experiments, both species were found most frequently in muddy sediment patches. Movement toward muddy patches occurred rapidly: an average of nearly 80% of Pyganodon grandis grandis were found in mud after 30 days. Elliptio complanata moved rapidly to patches of mud at the start of experiments, but occupation of muddy sediments appeared to decrease after about 30 days.
4. Our results contrast with many field studies that suggest populations of lake-dwelling freshwater mussels infrequently inhabit mud and silt. We therefore postulate that large-scale mussel distribution in lakes is influenced most strongly by factors other than sediment composition.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to survey the distribution and habitat of submerged macrophytes in the Seta River outflow from Lake Biwa, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. To accomplish this, I instituted a field survey with sampling on January 2009. I collected nine submerged macrophyte species during the diving operation. Sample collection showed that submerged macrophytes flourished on both sides of the river but did not flourish in the central portion of the river. Alien species (Egeria densa and Elodea nuttallii) were collected on all survey lines, while domestic species (Ceratophyllum demersum, Myriophyllum spicatum, Hydrilla verticillata, Vallisneria biwaensis, Vallisneria denseserrulata, Potamogeton maackianus, and Potamogeton malaianus) were collected in large amounts on the survey lines near Lake Biwa. The dominant species in cohesive soil or fine soil was Egeria densa, while the dominant species in sand gravel was Potamogeton maackianus. Although Egeria densa was collected in sand gravel too, Potamogeton maackianus was not collected in cohesive soil or fine soil, which indicates that Egeria densa has high fertility and can survive in an oxygen-poor environment, while Potamogeton maackianus cannot survive in an oxygen-poor environment.  相似文献

Significant concentrations of oxalate (dissolved plus particulate) were present in sediments taken from a diversity of aquatic environments, ranging from 0.1 to 0.7 mmol/liter of sediment. These included pelagic and littoral sediments from two freshwater lakes (Searsville Lake, Calif., and Lake Tahoe, Calif.), a hypersaline, meromictic, alkaline lake (Big Soda Lake, Nev.), and a South San Francisco Bay mud flat and salt marsh. The oxalate concentration of several plant species which are potential detrital inputs to these aquatic sediments ranged from 0.1 to 5.0% (wt/wt). In experiments with litter bags, the oxalate content of Myriophyllum sp. samples buried in freshwater littoral sediments decreased to 7% of the original value in 175 days. This suggests that plant detritus is a potential source of the oxalate within these sediments. [14C]oxalic acid was anaerobically degraded to 14CO2 in all sediment types tested, with higher rates evident in littoral sediments than in the pelagic sediments of the lakes studied. The turnover time of the added [14C]oxalate was less than 1 day in Searsville Lake littoral sediments. The total sediment oxalate concentration did not vary significantly between littoral and pelagic sediments and therefore did not appear to be controlling the rate of oxalate degradation. However, depth profiles of [14C]oxalate mineralization and dissolved oxalate concentration were closely correlated in freshwater littoral sediments; both were greatest in the surface sediments (0 to 5 cm) and decreased with depth. The dissolved oxalate concentration (9.1 μmol/liter of sediment) was only 3% of the total extractable oxalate (277 μmol/liter of sediment) at the sediment surface. These results suggest that anaerobic oxalate degradation is a widespread phenomenon in aquatic sediments and may be limited by the dissolved oxalate concentration within these sediments.  相似文献

In 1999, 4 species of cyprinid were surveyed for myxozoan parasites in a watershed in Algonquin Park, Canada, Kathlyn Lake. Broadwing Lake, and Lake Sasajewun were included. Eight species of Myxobolus were found that differed in their prevalence and distribution among the 3 lakes. The oligochaetes and environmental parameters, including sediment types and aquatic plants, of these 3 lakes were surveyed the following year. Oligochaetes belonging to 17 species were collected from the 3 lakes. The distribution patterns of the oligochaete fauna, with respect to the environmental variables, were examined using canonical correspondence analysis. Naidids were predominant in all 3 lakes, particularly in the pebbly and sandy sediment of Lake Sasajewun. The highest percentage of tubificids occurred in the detritus and muddy substrate of Broadwing Lake. These findings indicate that the prevalence of certain oligochaetes is congruent with the absence or presence of particular myxozoan species and that substrates and aquatic plants influence the distribution of certain oligochaete species.  相似文献

Sediment preferences of blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, and predation rates on various size classes of the hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria (Linné), in a variety of sediment types were studied in the laboratory. Blue crabs of all size classes exhibited a preference for sand, mud, and sand/mud rather than crushed oyster shell or granite gravel. Clams were more vulnerable to predation by crabs in sand and sand/mud than in crushed oyster shell or granite gravel. When crabs were given a choice of clam sizes based on carapace width (CW), small crabs (<75 mm CW) consumed 5- and 10-mm shell length (SL) clams. Medium crabs (75–125 mm CW) preferentially consumed 10-mm SL clams. Large crabs (> 125 mm CW) consumed 10- and 25-mm SL clams equally. Blue crabs did not eat clams that were >40-mm SL.  相似文献

The determination of bacterial densities in aquatic sediments generally requires that a dilution-mixing treatment be used before enumeration of organisms by the most-probable-number fermentation tube method can be done. Differential sediment and organism settling rates may, however, influence the distribution of the microbial population after the dilution-mixing process, resulting in biased bacterial density estimates. For standardization of sample preparation procedures, the influence of settling by suspended sediments on the fecal coliform distribution in a mixing vessel was examined. This was accomplished with both inoculated (Escherichia coli) and raw, uninoculated freshwater sediments from Saguaro Lake, Ariz. Both test sediments were coarse (greater than 90% gravel and sand). Coarse sediments are typical of southwestern U.S. lakes. The distribution of fecal coliforms, as determined by the most-probable-number method, was not significantly influenced by sediment settling and remained homogenous over a 16-min postmix period. The technique developed for coarse sediments may be useful for standardizing sample preparation techniques for other sediment types.  相似文献

Two opposite distribution patterns of larval Glyptotendipes paripes in relation to organic carbon content in sediments of central Florida lakes were discovered. In a majority of examined lakes, G. paripes larvae were most abundant in sand sediment and their density rapidly declined with increased carbon content (type 1 lakes); however, in some cases the opposite was true (type 2 lakes). To elucidate this anomaly, field-collected organic sediments from types 1 and 2 lakes and sand sediment were studied for G. paripes development in the laboratory. Type 1 organic sediment consisted predominantly of fine particles (<0.25 mm diameter) with low dissolved oxygen levels, whereas type 2 organic sediments consisted primarily of chironomid large faecal pellet aggregates (>0.25 mm diameter), with significantly higher levels of dissolved oxygen concentrations that were similar to sand sediment. Type 2 organic sediment and sand sediment were conducive to higher survival of G. paripes larvae than fine organic sediment. The larvae in type 2 organic sediment produced longer tubes than in other sediment types. This observation indicates that accumulation of chironomid faecal pellets in lake sediments may change physical properties, such as dissolved oxygen level and consequently alter conditions for survival of chironomid larvae and possibly other benthic fauna.  相似文献

In this study, PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was applied to analyze the microbial communities in lake sediments from Lake Xuanwu, Lake Mochou in Nanjing and Lake Taihu in Wuxi. Sediment samples from seven locations in three lakes were collected and their genomic DNAs were extracted. The DNA yields of the sediments of Lake Xuanwu and Lake Mochou were high (10 μg/g), while that of sediments in Lake Taihu was relatively low. After DNA purification, the 16S rDNA genes (V3 to V5 region) were amplified and the amplified DNA fragments were separated by parallel DGGE. The DGGE profiles showed that there were five common bands in all the lake sediment samples indicating that there were similarities among the populations of microorganisms in all the lake sediments. The DGGE profiles of Lake Xuanwu and Lake Mochou were similar and about 20 types of microorganisms were identified in the sediment samples of both lakes. These results suggest that the sediment samples of these two city lakes (Xuanwu, Mochou) have similar microbial communities. However, the DGGE profiles of sediment samples in Lake Taihu were significantly different from these two lakes. Furthermore, the DGGE profiles of sediment samples in different locations in Lake Taihu were also different, suggesting that the microbial communities in Lake Taihu are more diversified than those in Lake Xuanwu and Lake Mochou. The differences in microbial diversity may be caused by the different environmental conditions, such as redox potential, pH, and the concentrations of organic matters. Seven major bands of 16S rDNA genes fragments from the DGGE profiles of sediment samples were further re-amplified and sequenced. The results of sequencing analysis indicate that five sequences shared 99%–100% homology with known sequences (Bacillus and Brevibacillus, uncultured bacteria), while the other two sequences shared 93%–96% homology with known sequences (Acinetobacter, and Bacillus). Erosion and transport of juvenile individuals may alter the distribution pattern of intertidal bivalves. The burrowing success of recently transported juvenile softshell clams (Mya arenaria) was studied in a laboratory flume under a wide range of hydrosedimentary environments. Juvenile individuals (5-20 mm) were observed under a simulated 30 min slack tide before initiating the flow for a period of 60 min. Five different free-stream velocities (0, 3, 5, 10 and 24 cm s− 1) and four sediment types (mud, sandy-mud, sand and gravel) were used. The mean proportion of juvenile clams that initiated (MPI) or completed (MPC) a burial decreased with increasing shell length. Erosion from the sediment was more important in large juveniles suggesting that large juveniles may have more difficulty successfully relocating once transported. The MPI increased with increasing flow speed in experimental runs held at speed < 24 cm s− 1. This was observed in all sediment types. Most individuals were unable to burrow at 24 cm s− 1 because they got eroded. The MPC also increased with increasing flow speed in mud, sandy-mud and sand. The MPC's response to flow was more complex in gravel because of a shell length × flow speed interaction effect. Our observations suggest that water movement may induce the burrowing behaviour of recently eroded juvenile clams. Results are discussed in an ecological and aquacultural context.  相似文献

为了解淡水湖渔场底泥中产几丁质酶菌株的产酶量和分布情况,对环洞庭湖的4个淡水湖渔场的表层底泥样品进行了无菌采集。利用稀释涂布平板法、点种法和摇瓶发酵法从底泥样品中筛选分离到26株产几丁质酶菌株,几丁质酶活在0.07~0.69 U/mL之间。对26株产几丁质酶菌株进行16S rRNA基因鉴定和系统发育分析。结果表明,26株菌株都分布于变形菌门(Proteobacteria)和厚壁菌门(Firmicutes)的芽胞杆菌属(Bacillus)、假单胞菌属(Pseudomonas)、不动杆菌属(Acinetobacter)和微小杆菌属(Exiguobacterium)。且产几丁质酶细菌在4个淡水湖渔场表层底泥中的分布情况为安乐湖>东湖>北民湖>西湖。对产几丁质酶菌株的降解活力、种类组成及数量分布的研究可为淡水湖渔场底泥中产几丁质酶微生物资源的开发及应用提供参考。  相似文献

The occurrence of non-native species at high densities may generate competition for resources and possibly exclude native species in various environments. We evaluated the effects of increased densities of the non-native invasive macrophyte Hydrilla verticillata on the growth of the native species Egeria najas in different sediment types and with only root interactions or root?+?shoot interactions. We tested the hypothesis that the effect of the invasive on the native species is density dependent and that it is greater when competition for light and nutrients occurs (root?+?shoot interactions). The results of these experiments demonstrated that increased density of the invasive species H. verticillata significantly decreased the growth of the native species independent of sediment type (sand or mud sediments). When plants competed for water and sediment resources (root?+?shoot interactions), the native species was more impacted by the invasive than when they competed only for water resources (only shoots interacting). Our results show that E. najas is probably unable to colonize sites highly colonized by hydrilla, and this applies to both sand and mud sediments. This outcome suggests that H. verticillata is a threat for E. najas and likely other native submerged species in South America.  相似文献

Although phosphorus loadings are considered the main pressure for most shallow lakes, wind-driven resuspension can cause additional problems for these aquatic ecosystems. We quantified the potential effectiveness of measures to reduce the contribution of resuspended sediments, resulting from wind action, to the overall light attenuation for three comparable shallow peat lakes with poor ecological status in the Netherlands: Loosdrecht, Nieuwkoop, and Reeuwijk (1.8–2.7 m depth, 1.6–2.5 km fetch). These measures are: 1. wave reducing barriers, 2. water level fluctuations, 3. capping of the sediment with sand, and 4. combinations of above. Critical shear stress of the sediments for resuspension (V crit), size distribution, and optical properties of the suspended material were quantified in the field (June 2009) and laboratory. Water quality monitoring data (2002–2009) showed that light attenuation by organic suspended matter in all lakes is high. Spatial modeling of the impact of these measures showed that in Lake Loosdrecht limiting wave action can have significant effects (reductions from 6% exceedance to 2% exceedance of V crit), whereas in Lake Nieuwkoop and Lake Reeuwijk this is less effective. The depth distribution and shape of Lake Nieuwkoop and Lake Reeuwijk limit the role of wind-driven resuspension in the total suspended matter concentration. Although the lakes are similar in general appearance (origin, size, and depth range) measures suitable to improve their ecological status differ. This calls for care when defining the programme of measures to improve the ecological status of a specific lake based on experience from other lakes.  相似文献

Late summer phytoplankton associations were studied qualitatively and quantitatively in 80 Hungarian lakes altogether (mostly shallow salt lakes, reservoirs, oxbows, gravel pit lakes). Equilibrium phases sensu Sommer et al. (1993) were found only in 17 lakes. Most of them were under some kind (high salt content or very low level of nutrients) of stress factor. It is concluded that environmental stress forces phytoplankton communities towards equilibrium. No relationship between occurrence of equilibria and trophic state was found. Species number of non-equilibrated lakes was almost three times as high as those in equilibrium. Of the 31 recently described (Reynolds et al., 2002) phytoplankton assemblages most of those were recognized that are likely to occur in shallow lakes. Separation of a functional group W S from W2 for Synura dominated lakes is suggested. It seemed also necessary to raise a group (Y Ph) for lakes dominated by Phacotus. Sorting of Dinophyta species into different already described functional groups is desirable.  相似文献

Sediment-water systems of Lake Balaton mud and tap water were constructed in plexiglass tubes and boxes for evaluation of changes in the nitrogen and phosphorus contents of overlying water as influenced by chironomid density and light conditions. Nitrogen flux from sediment was greatly influenced by denitrification process. The amount of TN released by chironomids amounted to about half of the yearly nitrogen fixation rate in Lake Balaton. Omnivorous chironomids increased the phosphorus content of the overlying water. The rate of release was density dependent. TP release rates ranged between 1–17 mg m−2 day −1 over a range of densities 500–20,000 larvae m−2. It became evident that aerobic sediment cores can be an important nutrient source in lakes where chironomids inhabit them at densities above 1,000 larvae m−2.  相似文献

Based on 96 grab samples at 16 sites the composition and distribution of macrobenthic fauna were examined in a small coastal basin of lower Chesapeake Bay. Normal classification analysis of dominant species produced five site groups. Site groups were divided into clean sand sites, fine sand sites with varying amounts of silt-clay, and mud sites. Dominant species of the clean group were primarily restricted to this sediment type, while the dominant species of the other groups were widespread in the study area.  相似文献

2005年6—7月在抚仙湖共采集到摇蚊科幼虫5属6种,其中花纹前突摇蚊和羽摇蚊为优势种,两者的相对密度之和达94.9%,相对生物量之和达97.5%,其现存量基本代表了抚仙湖中摇蚊幼虫的现存量.全湖摇蚊幼虫平均密度为(275±333) ind·m-2,平均生物量为(0.642±0.763) g·m-2.花纹前突摇蚊为全湖性分布,羽摇蚊主要分布在明星鱼洞以南湖区,其他种类为局部性分布.小突摇蚊为典型的深水贫营养型种类,其分布的平均水深达107.2 m.抚仙湖摇蚊幼虫密度分布与水深呈极显著正相关(P<0.001),与底质和水草的关系为沙砾石底<沙泥底<细泥底;水草区<非水草区.与1980年前后的调查资料相比,摇蚊幼虫的出现率和现存量显著增加,并出现了典型富营养型的指示种羽摇蚊,表明抚仙湖水体的营养水平在提高.  相似文献

Anaerobic bacteria and anoxic sediments from soda lakes produced electricity in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). No electricity was generated in the absence of bacterial metabolism. Arsenate respiring bacteria isolated from moderately hypersaline Mono Lake (Bacillus selenitireducens), and salt-saturated Searles Lake, CA (strain SLAS-1) oxidized lactate using arsenate as the electron acceptor. However, these cultures grew equally well without added arsenate using the MFC anode as their electron acceptor, and in the process oxidized lactate more efficiently. The decrease in electricity generation by consumption of added alternative electron acceptors (i.e. arsenate) which competed with the anode for available electrons proved to be a useful indicator of microbial activity and hence life in the fuel cells. Shaken sediment slurries from these two lakes also generated electricity, with or without added lactate. Hydrogen added to sediment slurries was consumed but did not stimulate electricity production. Finally, electricity was generated in statically incubated “intact” sediment cores from these lakes. More power was produced in sediment from Mono Lake than from Searles Lake, however microbial fuel cells could detect low levels of metabolism operating under moderate and extreme conditions of salt stress.  相似文献
