Individual responses to aerobic training vary from almost none to a 40% increase in aerobic fitness in sedentary subjects. The reasons for these differences in the training response are not well known. We hypothesized that baseline cardiovascular autonomic function may influence the training response. The study population included sedentary male subjects (n = 39, 35 +/- 9 yr). The training period was 8 wk, including 6 sessions/wk at an intensity of 70-80% of the maximum heart rate for 30-60 min/session. Cardiovascular autonomic function was assessed by measuring the power spectral indexes of heart rate variability from 24-h R-R interval recordings before the training period. Mean peak O2 uptake increased by 11 +/- 5% during the training period (range 2-19%). The training response correlated with age (r = -0.39, P = 0.007) and with the values of the high-frequency (HF) spectral component of R-R intervals (HF power) analyzed over the 24-h recording (r = 0.46, P = 0.002) or separately during the daytime hours (r = 0.35, P = 0.028) and most strongly during the nighttime hours (r = 0.52, P = 0.001). After adjustment for age, HF power was still associated with the training response (e.g., P = 0.001 analyzed during nighttime hours). These data show that cardiovascular autonomic function is an important determinant of the response to aerobic training among sedentary men. High vagal activity at baseline is associated with the improvement in aerobic power caused by aerobic exercise training in healthy sedentary subjects. 相似文献

The effects of endurance training on endurance performance characteristics and cardiac autonomic modulation during night sleep were investigated during two 4-week training periods. After the first 4-week training period (3 x 40 min per week, at 75% of HRR) the subjects were divided into HIGH group (n = 7), who performed three high-intensity endurance training sessions per week; and CONTROL group (n = 8) who did not change their training. An incremental treadmill test was performed before and after the two 4-week training periods. Furthermore, nocturnal RR-intervals were recorded after each training day. In the second 4-week training period HIGH group increased their VO2max (P = 0.005) more than CONTROL group. At the same time, nocturnal HR decreased (P = 0.039) and high-frequency power (HFP) increased (P = 0.003) in HIGH group while no changes were observed in CONTROL group. Furthermore, a correlation was observed between the changes in nocturnal HFP and changes in VO2max during the second 4-week training period (r = 0.90, P < 0.001). The present study showed that the increased HFP is related to improved VO2max in sedentary subjects suggesting that nocturnal HFP can provide a useful method in monitoring individual responses to endurance training. 相似文献

Endurance-trained athletes have increased heart rate variability (HRV), but it is not known whether exercise training improves the HRV and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) in sedentary persons. We compared the effects of low- and high-intensity endurance training on resting heart rate, HRV, and BRS. The maximal oxygen uptake and endurance time increased significantly in the high-intensity group compared with the control group. Heart rate did not change significantly in the low-intensity group but decreased significantly in the high-intensity group (-6 beats/min, 95% confidence interval; -10 to -1 beats/min, exercise vs. control). No significant changes occurred in either the time or frequency domain measures of HRV or BRS in either of the exercise groups. Exercise training was not able to modify the cardiac vagal outflow in sedentary, middle-aged persons. 相似文献

The effect of exercise training on heart rate variability (HRV) and improvements in peak oxygen consumption (
peak) was examined in sedentary middle-aged men. The HRV and absolute and relative
peak of training (n = 19) and control (n = 15) subjects were assessed before and after a 24-session moderate intensity exercise training programme. Results indicated that with exercise training there was a significantly increased absolute and relative
peak (P < 0.005) for the training group (12% and 11% respectively) with no increase for the control group. The training group also displayed a significant reduction in resting heart rate; however, HRV remained unchanged. The trained subjects were further categorized into high (n = 5) and low (n = 5) HRV groups and changes in
peak were compared. Improvements in both absolute and relative
peak were significantly greater (P > 0.005) in the high HRV group (17% and 20% respectively) compared to the low HRV group (6% and 1% respectively). The groups did not differ in mean age, pretraining oxygen consumption, or resting heart rate. These results would seem to suggest that a short aerobic training programme does not alter HRV in middle-aged men. Individual differences in HRV, however, may be associated with
peak response to aerobic training. 相似文献

Findings from the 1973 Skylab mission and early studies led to the conclusion that high level of aerobic capacity might be detrimental to the orthostatic tolerance of returning astronauts. Numerous studies have addressed the problem with conflicting results, further work is needed to establish the relationship between aerobic capacity and orthostasis. During the last two decades, the technique for heart rate variability (HRV) signal analysis developed and have provided a non-invasive probe to examine quantitatively changes in cardiac autonomic balance. In the past, spectral analysis has been used in these studies. During the early 90's, a new mathematical approach and formula termed approximate entropy(ApEn) has been introduced as quantification of regularity and complexity. More recently, ApEn has been used to quantitate the loss of normal nonlinear heart rate variability in a variety of pathological conditions, aging, as well as bed rest deconditioning. The present study was undertaken to assess the effect aerobic training on orthostatic tolerance and HRV analyzed by both conventional AR spectral and ApEn analysis. 相似文献

The goal of the study was to determine the effects of continuous (CT) vs. intermittent (IT) training yielding identical mechanical work and training duration on skeletal muscle and cardiorespiratory adaptations in sedentary subjects. Eleven subjects (6 men and 5 women, 45 +/- 3 years) were randomly assigned to either of the two 8-wk training programs in a cross-over design, separated by 12 wk of detraining. Maximal oxygen uptake (Vo2max) increased after both trainings (9% with CT vs. 15% with IT), whereas only IT was associated with faster Vo2 kinetics (tau: 68.0 +/- 1.6 vs. 54.9 +/- 0.7 s, P < 0.05) measured during a test to exhaustion (TTE) and with improvements in maximal cardiac output (Qmax, from 18.1 +/- 1.1 to 20.1 +/- 1.2 l/min; P < 0.01). Skeletal muscle mitochondrial oxidative capacities (Vmax) were only increased after IT (3.3 +/- 0.4 before and 4.5 +/- 0.6 micromol O2 x min(-1) x g dw(-1) after training; P < 0.05), whereas capillary density increased after both trainings, with a two-fold higher enhancement after CT (+21 +/- 1% for IT and +40 +/- 3% after CT, P < 0.05). The gain of Vmax was correlated with the gain of TTE and the gain of Vo2max with IT. The gain of Qmax was also correlated with the gain of VO2max. These results suggest that fluctuations of workload and oxygen uptake during training sessions, rather than exercise duration or global energy expenditure, are key factors in improving muscle oxidative capacities. In an integrative view, IT seems optimal in maximizing both peripheral muscle and central cardiorespiratory adaptations, permitting significant functional improvement. These data support the symmorphosis concept in sedentary subjects. 相似文献

Recent findings have indicated that creatine supplementation may affect glucose metabolism. This study aimed to examine the effects of creatine supplementation, combined with aerobic training, on glucose tolerance in sedentary healthy male. Subjects (n = 22) were randomly divided in two groups and were allocated to receive treatment with either creatine (CT) ( approximately 10 g . day over three months) or placebo (PT) (dextrose). Administration of treatments was double blind. Both groups underwent moderate aerobic training. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed and both fasting plasma insulin and the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) index were assessed at the start, and after four, eight and twelve weeks. CT demonstrated significant decrease in OGTT area under the curve compared to PT (P = 0.034). There were no differences between groups or over time in fasting insulin or HOMA. The results suggest that creatine supplementation, combined with aerobic training, can improve glucose tolerance but does not affect insulin sensitivity, and may warrant further investigation with diabetic subjects. 相似文献

With aging and disease, there is a breakdown of the natural fractal-like organization of heart rate (HR). Fractal-like correlation properties of HR can be assessed with detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). A short-time scaling exponent (alpha(s)) value of 1 is associated with healthy HR dynamics, whereas values that deviate away from 1, in either direction, indicate fractal collapse. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of resistance exercise training (RT) on fractal correlation properties of HR dynamics. Resting ECG was collected at baseline, following a 4-wk time control period and 6 wk of RT (3 days per wk) in 34 men (23 +/- 1 years of age). Fractal properties of HR were assessed with DFA. There was no change in alpha(s) following either the time control period or RT (1.01 +/- 0.06 to 0.98 +/- 0.06 to 0.93 +/- 0.04, P > 0.05). Given the potential bidirectional nature of fractal collapse, subjects were retrospectively separated into two groups (higher alpha(s) and lower alpha(s)) on the basis of the initial alpha(s) by using cluster analysis. An interaction was detected for alpha(s) following RT (P < 0.05). There was no change in alpha(s) in either group following the time control, but alpha(s) increased following RT in the lower alpha(s) group (n = 18; 0.73 +/- 0.04 to 0.69 +/- 0.04 to 0.88 +/- 0.04) and alpha(s) decreased following RT in the higher alpha(s) group (n = 16; 1.20 +/- 0.04 to 1.24 +/- 0.04 to 0.98 +/- 0.04). In conclusion, RT improves fractal properties of HR dynamics. 相似文献

Forty-eight sedentary and 39 quite active or well-trained men participated in this study. Muscle biopsy samples were taken from the vastus lateralis for the determination of fiber type composition (I, IIa, IIb), fiber type area, and assay of the following enzymes: malate dehydrogenase (MDH), 3-hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase (HADH) and oxoglutarate dehydrogenase (OGDH). Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was determined with a progressive cycle ergometer test, while endurance performance or maximal aerobic capacity (MAC) was defined as the total work output during a 90-min cycle ergometer test. Correlation analysis revealed no evidence of association between fiber type composition and VO2max kg-1 or MAC kg-1 in sedentary subjects, while active men exhibited significant correlation between % type I (r = 0.52), % type IIb (r = 0.31) and VO2max kg-1. Enzyme activities were not significantly correlated with MAC kg-1 and VO2max kg-1 in sedentary men while active men exhibited significant correlation for the three enzymes (0.37 less than or equal to r less than or equal to 0.51) with VO2max kg-1. These results show that the contribution of muscle fiber type and enzyme activities to aerobic performance may be inflated from a statistical point of view by the training status heterogeneity of subjects. They also suggest that variation in these muscle characteristics does not account for the individual differences in aerobic performance of subjects who have never trained before. Therefore, the assessment of muscle characteristics is not as useful as originally thought for the detection of individuals with a high potential for endurance performance among untrained subjects. 相似文献

The Conconi's heart-rate deflection point (HRd) in the heart rate (HR)/speed curve is often used to set aerobic training loads. Training could either be set in percentage running speed or HR at HRd. In order to establish the limits and usefulness of various aerobic-training modalities for intermediate athletic level (physical-education students), acute responses were analyzed while running for a typical 40-minute training session. Speed, HR, lactate, and cortisol were thus recorded during training at 90 and 100% of running speed (RS: n = 14) and HR (HR: n = 16) at HRd (90% running speed [RS90], 100% running speed [RS100], 90% HR [HR90], and 100% HR [HR100]). During constant HR training, RS decreases while HR drifts upward during constant RS training. Half of the subjects can not finish the 40-minute RS100 session. For HR90, RS90, HR100, and RS100, average intensities are 67, 69, 74.9, and 77% maximal aerobic speed (multistage test), respectively. This study indicates that (1) training at HR100 and RS100 is more appropriate to improve high-intensity metabolic capacities (increased cortisol and lactate) while RS100 is too difficult to be maintained for 40 minutes for subjects at that level at least, (2) training at HR90, however, is better to improve endurance and capacity to do a large amount of work considering cortisol and lactate homeostasis, and (3) training at a constant HR using a HR monitor is a good method to control the intensity of the training with subjects not used to pacing themselves with the split-time approach. 相似文献

To determine the relation between habitual endurance exercise status and the age-associated decline in maximal aerobic capacity [i.e., maximal O(2) consumption (Vo(2 max))] in men, we performed a well-controlled cross-sectional laboratory study on 153 healthy men aged 20-75 yr: 64 sedentary and 89 endurance trained. Vo(2 max) (ml. kg(-1). min(-1)), measured by maximal treadmill exercise, was inversely related to age in the endurance-trained (r = -0.80) and sedentary (r = -0.74) men but was higher in the endurance-trained men at any age. The rate of decline in Vo(2 max) with age (ml. kg(-1). min(-1)) was greater (P < 0.001) in the endurance-trained than in the sedentary men. Whereas the relative rate of decline in Vo(2 max) (percent decrease per decade from baseline levels in young adulthood) was similar in the two groups, the absolute rate of decline in Vo(2 max) was -5.4 and -3.9 ml. kg(-1). min(-). decade(-1) in the endurance-trained and sedentary men, respectively. Vo(2 max) declined linearly across the age range in the sedentary men but was maintained in the endurance-trained men until approximately 50 yr of age. The accelerated decline in Vo(2 max) after 50 yr of age in the endurance-trained men was related to a decline in training volume (r = 0.46, P < 0.0001) and was associated with an increase in 10-km running time (r = -0.84, P < 0.0001). We conclude that the rate of decline in maximal aerobic capacity during middle and older age is greater in endurance-trained men than in their sedentary peers and is associated with a marked decline in O(2) pulse. 相似文献

The aims of the present study are twofold: 1) to investigate whether heart rate recovery (HRR) after a cycle ergometry test is affected by exercise training and 2) to test the ability of HRR to replicate the baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) changes that occur in response to an exercise training program in coronary artery patients. We randomized 82 coronary artery patients undergoing a residential cardiac rehabilitation program to an exercise training group (TR; n = 43) and an untrained group (UTR; n = 39). All of the patients underwent an exercise test before and after the rehabilitation program. HRR was recorded at the end of the 1st and 2nd min after exercise. BRS was determined at rest before and after treatment. HRR after the 2nd min was significantly improved in TR patients (-21.4 +/- 0.9 beats/min) compared with UTR patients (-17.8 +/- 1.2 beats/min) at the end of the training program. Improvement in HRR paralleled that in BRS in TR patients (from 3.2 +/- 0.3 to 5.3 +/- 0.8 ms/mmHg; P < 0.001), whereas no significant change was evident in UTR patients (from 3.5 +/- 0 to 4.0 +/- 0.4 ms/mmHg; P = 0.230). Our data show that HRR in the 2nd min after the cessation of a cycle ergometer exercise test increased in coronary artery patients after an exercise training period. This result confirms the positive effect induced by exercise training on HRR and extends the conclusions of previous studies to different modalities of exercise (i.e., cycle ergometer). HRR might provide an additional simple marker of the effectiveness of physical training programs in cardiac patients. 相似文献

Tanaka, Hirofumi, Christopher A. DeSouza, Pamela P. Jones,Edith T. Stevenson, Kevin P. Davy, and Douglas R. Seals. Greater rate of decline in maximal aerobic capacity with age in physically active vs. sedentary healthy women. J. Appl.Physiol. 83(6): 1947-1953, 1997.Using ameta-analytic approach, we recently reported that the rate of declinein maximal oxygen uptake(O2 max) with age inhealthy women is greatest in the most physically active and smallest inthe least active when expressed in milliliters per kilogram per minuteper decade. We tested this hypothesis prospectively underwell-controlled laboratory conditions by studying 156 healthy, nonobesewomen (age 20-75 yr): 84 endurance-trained runners (ET) and 72 sedentary subjects (S). ET were matched across the age range forage-adjusted 10-km running performance. Body mass was positivelyrelated with age in S but not in ET. Fat-free mass was not differentwith age in ET or S. Maximal respiratory exchange ratio and rating ofperceived exertion were similar across age in ET and S, suggestingequivalent voluntary maximal efforts. There was a significant butmodest decline in running mileage, frequency, and speed with advancingage in ET.O2 max(ml · kg1 · min1)was inversely related to age (P < 0.001) in ET (r = 0.82) and S(r = 0.71) and was higher atany age in ET. Consistent with our meta-analysic findings, the absolute rate of decline inO2 max was greater inET (5.7ml · kg1 · min1 · decade1)compared with S (3.2 ml · kg1 · min1 · decade1;P < 0.01), but the relative (%)rate of decline was similar (9.7 vs 9.1%/decade; notsignificant). The greater absolute rate of decline inO2 max in ET comparedwith S was not associated with a greater rate of decline in maximalheart rate (5.6 vs. 6.2beats · min1 · decade1),nor was it related to training factors. The present cross-sectional findings provide additional evidence that the absolute, but not therelative, rate of decline in maximal aerobic capacity with age may begreater in highly physically active women compared with theirsedentary healthy peers. This difference does not appear to be relatedto age-associated changes in maximal heart rate, bodycomposition, or training factors. 相似文献

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that cocaine intoxication induces distinctive alterations in sinus rhythm heart rate dynamics. Time-series and spectral analysis techniques were used to examine the effects of lethal doses of cocaine on heart rate variability in conscious, restrained ferrets. In all animals (n = 5), cocaine administration resulted in a marked decrease in sinus rhythm heart rate variability prior to sudden death. Heart rate variability (coefficient of variation of heart rate) just prior to death (0.018 +/- 0.005) was significantly (p less than 0.02) decreased compared to that at baseline prior to cocaine administration (0.061 +/- 0.022). There was also a significant (p less than 0.02) decrease in total spectral power prior to death compared to baseline. Transient low-frequency (0.04-0.10 Hz) oscillations in heart rate were also noted in three of the five animals following cocaine administration. There were, however, no significant changes in mean heart rate in response to cocaine. Alterations in heart rate dynamics were not seen in three saline-treated controls. Lethal effects of cocaine included ventricular arrhythmias (n = 2) and seizures (n = 3). One animal developed transient ST segment elevations that were consistent with coronary vasospasm. In conclusion, lethal doses of cocaine in the conscious ferret induce characteristic alterations in heart rate dynamics. These abnormalities (loss of heart rate variability and the appearance of low-frequency heart rate oscillations) are similar to those reported previously in certain patients at high risk of sudden cardiac death due to organic heart disease. 相似文献

Three hundred and seventy sedentary men aged 20-65 years enrolled in a physical training programme after a medical and fitness examination that included measurements of "classical" risk factors for coronary heart disease. Five years later re-examination showed (a) that on average the subjects had not changed significantly in weight, blood pressure, serum lipid concentrations, smoking habits, and physical working capacity; (b) that men who had remained active and therefore had a higher degree of fitness did not differ in risk factors from men who had returned to sedentary habits; and (c) that men who had improved substantially in fitness did not differ in risk factors from men whose fitness had not changed or had declined. Five years after the initial programme one-third of the men were continuing with regular vigorous exercise. These results do not support the view that classical risk factors for coronary heart disease improve with increased physical activity and fitness. 相似文献

Exercise training of a muscle group improves local vascular function in subjects with chronic heart failure (CHF). We studied forearm resistance vessel function in 12 patients with CHF in response to an 8-wk exercise program, which specifically excluded forearm exercise, using a crossover design. Forearm blood flow (FBF) was measured using strain-gauge plethysmography. Responses to three dose levels of intra-arterial acetylcholine were significantly augmented after exercise training when analyzed in terms of absolute flows (7.0 +/- 1.8 to 10.9 +/- 2.1 ml x 100 ml(-1) x min(-1) for the highest dose, P < 0.05 by ANOVA), forearm vascular resistance (21.5 +/- 5.0 to 15.3 +/- 3.9 ml x 100 ml forearm(-1) x min(-1), P < 0.01), or FBF ratios (P < 0.01, ANOVA). FBF ratio responses to sodium nitroprusside were also significantly increased after training (P < 0.05, ANOVA). Reactive hyperemic flow significantly increased in both upper limbs after training (27.9 +/- 2.7 to 33.5 +/- 3.1 ml x 100 ml(-1) x min(-1), infused limb; P < 0.05 by paired t-test). Exercise training improves endothelium-dependent and -independent vascular function and peak vasodilator capacity in patients with CHF. These effects on the vasculature are generalized, as they were evident in a vascular bed not directly involved in the exercise stimulus. 相似文献

Eighteen healthy human subjects participated in weekly sessions of five 10-minute trials of walking on a treadmill at 2.5 mph and 6% grade. Eight experimental subjects received beat-to-beat heart rate biofeedback during the exercise and were instructed to try to lower their heart rates; ten control subjects did not receive feedback. By the end of 5 weeks (25 trials), the experimental group showed a significantly lower mean heart rate (96.8 vs. 108.6 bpm), systolic blood pressure (114.0 vs. 131.3 mmHg), and rate-pressure product (11.0×103 vs. 14.3×103 bpm-mmHg) during exercise than the control group. These differences were maintained after crossover of the feedback provision for five more weeks. 相似文献
