1.  Thermal acclimation is one of the basic strategies by which organisms cope with thermal heterogeneity of the environment. Under predictable variation in environmental temperatures, theory predicts that selection favours acclimation of thermal performance curves over fixed phenotypes.
2.  We examined the influence of diel fluctuations in developmental temperatures on the thermal sensitivity of the maximal swimming capacity in larvae of the alpine newt, Triturus alpestris .
3.  We incubated newt eggs under three thermal regimes with varying daily amplitudes (1, 5 and 9 °C) and similar means (17·6–17·9 °C), and accordingly we measured the swimming speed of hatched larvae at three experimental temperatures (12, 17 and 22 °C), which they would normally experience in their natural habitat.
4.  Embryonic development under low and middle temperature fluctuations produced larvae with similar swimming speeds across experimental temperatures. In contrast, the most fluctuating regime induced development of phenotypes, which at 12 °C swam faster than larvae developed under moderate diel fluctuations.
5.  Our results provide evidence that diel temperature fluctuations induce acclimation of thermal dependence of locomotor performance. In ectotherms experiencing diel cycles in environmental temperatures, this plastic response may act as an important pacemaker in the evolution of thermal sensitivity.  相似文献

1.  Daphnia lumholtzi is a subtropical, Old World species which is rapidly spreading throughout reservoirs in the southern U.S.A. It was first recorded in Lake Texoma (Oklahoma–Texas) in September 1991.
2. Southern U.S. reservoirs typically have strong spatial and temporal gradients in temperature, conductivity, turbidity and in the distribution of organisms. Therefore, the present experiments examined the reproductive and moulting rates, and survival of D . lumholtzi in relation to extremes of food concentration, temperature, conductivity and turbidity.
3. Increases in temperature (range = 15–29 °C) and decreases in turbidity (range = 0.6–470 NTU) increased reproductive and moulting rates, whereas food concentration only affected the rate of reproduction, while conductivity had no effects. Survival was affected only by temperature.
4.  Daphnia lumholtzi tolerates high temperatures (27–30 °C) at which other cladocerans in Lake Texoma disappear. Therefore, D . lumholtzi may exploit resources in midsummer, when there are few potential competitors.  相似文献

1. Hyalella montezuma is endemic to Montezuma Well, Arizona, and is exposed to minimal diel and seasonal temperature fluctuations in the pelagic zone (21 ± 4 °C). Juvenile H . montezuma feed in the pelagic zone during the day and migrate into the littoral vegetation at night, while adults remain primarily in the littoral vegetation.
2. Oxygen consumption ( V O2) of adult and juvenile H . montezuma was measured at 20, 25 and 30 °C. The V O2 of both adult and juvenile H . montezuma increased with temperature. However, the V O2 of juveniles was significantly greater than that of adults at all temperatures, with greatest divergence at 30 °C where mean juvenile V O2 (6.31 μl mg–1 dry weight (DW) h–1) was almost twice that of adults (3.60 μl mg–1 DW h–1).
3. Survivorship of juveniles was significantly lower (54%) at 30 °C than at 27.5 °C (95%) after 4 h, whereas adults showed at least a 93% survivorship at both temperatures.
4. Our data suggest that temperature may have been the proximate cue that elicited the diel horizontal migration of juvenile H . montezuma in Montezuma Well, with the behaviour maintained and enhanced by intensive invertebrate predation in the pelagic and littoral zones.  相似文献

1.  Organisms must contend with seasonal fluctuations in energy availability. To maintain a positive energy balance year-round, a number of adaptations have evolved including seasonal changes in reproduction, energetics and immunity. Photoperiod is the primary environmental signal most animals use to predict seasonal events. Despite the established link between energetics and immune function, little is known regarding how changes in energy availability affect immunity.
2.  The goal of the present study was to determine the effects of food restriction on photoperiodic changes in reproduction and immune function in the Siberian hamster ( Phodopus sungorus ). Adult hamsters were housed in long or short days and were food restricted or fed ad libitum . Immune responses were quantified by measuring specific antibody production and bacterial killing capacity.
3.  Food restriction decreased body and relative reproductive masses in long-day animals. Antibody responses, but not bacterial killing ability, were enhanced in food restricted short-day animals as compared with ad libitum fed controls. We also found differential effects of body fat on immune responses depending on the immune measure.
4.  The effects of food restriction on immune function appear to vary based on the restriction regimen, the response measured, and the physiological state of the organism including energy balance, metabolic rate and reproductive status.
5.  In conclusion, these results suggest that a wide range of factors can differentially affect immune function. In addition, these effects may vary based on the specific response examined. Future studies should include a variety of measurements to provide a more integrative and accurate picture of reproductive, energetic, and photoperiodic effects on immune function.  相似文献

1.  In a seasonal environment, subcutaneous energy reserves of resident animals often increase in winter and decline again in summer reflecting gradual seasonal changes in their fattening strategies. We studied changes in body reserves of wintering great tits in relation to their dominance status under two contrasting temperature regimes to see whether individuals are capable of optimizing their body mass even under extreme environmental conditions.
2.  We predicted that dominant individuals will carry a lesser amount of body reserves than subordinate great tits under mild conditions and that the body reserves of the same dominant individuals will increase and exceed the amount of reserves of subordinates under conditions of extremely low ambient temperatures, when ambient temperature dropped down to −37 °C.
3.  The results confirmed the predictions showing that dominant great tits responded to the rising risk of starvation under low temperatures by increasing their body reserves and this was done at the expense of their safety.
4.  Removal experiments revealed that lower body reserves of subordinate flock members are due to the increased intraspecific competition for food under low ambient temperatures.
5.  Our results also showed that fattening strategies of great tits may change much quicker than previously considered, reflecting an adaptive role of winter fattening which is sensitive to changes in ambient temperatures.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Under natural conditions in Kyoto, Japan, the reproductive activities of Nicrophorus quadripunctatus Kraatz (Coleoptera: Silphidae) decreased in summer and the species showed a bimodal life cycle.
2. In the laboratory, most adult pairs raised at 20 °C under a LD 12:12 h regime reproduced when provided with a piece of chicken. In adults raised at 20 °C under a LD 16:8 h regime, however, both reproductive behaviour and ovarian development were reduced. It is concluded that these adults entered a reproductive summer diapause.
3. High temperature (25 °C) also suppressed the reproductive behaviour even under a favourable LD 12:12 h regime. In the field, therefore, adults reduce their reproductive activity in summer because of diapause induced by long-day photoperiods and direct inhibition of reproduction by high temperatures.
4. When the temperature was changed from 20 °C to 25 °C immediately after hatching of larvae, they reached the wandering stage in 95% of adult pairs. When the temperature was changed from 20 °C to 25 °C immediately after oviposition, however, no larvae hatched in 85% of pairs. Egg mortality was significantly higher at 25 °C than at 20 and 22.5 °C; no eggs hatched at 27.5 °C. The physiological mechanisms for reducing reproduction probably prevent the beetles from inefficient oviposition in summer.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Defence against parasites and pathogens can be essential, yet not all hosts respond similarly to parasitic challenge. Environmental conditions are thought to explain variation in host responses to parasites.
2.  Lestes forcipatus damselflies emerging later in the season have shown higher resistance to the mite, Arrenurus planus , than hosts emerging earlier. This study was undertaken to determine whether variation in environmental temperatures characteristic of early vs. late emergence times, degree or costs of mite parasitism, and/or size of newly emerged adults could explain seasonal variation in defence and resistance to ectoparasitic mites.
3. In this study damselflies from early vs. late emergence groups differed in size at emergence and mite intensity. In general, early hosts were larger and had more mites than later hosts. However only experimental temperatures experienced by damselflies at emergence influenced defence and resistance against mites and not host size or degree of parasitism.
4. More specifically, hosts from early and late emergence groups did not differ in defence and resistance when held at the same temperatures in incubators. Housing at a high temperature, indicative of later in the season, was associated with higher defence and resistance for damselflies from both early and late emergence groups.
5. These results indicate that daily temperatures in relation to emergence timing can account for seasonal increases in resistance for this temperate insect. Seasonal increases in resistance may be expected for other temperate insect–parasite associations and should have important implications for the phenology of parasites and for seasonal variation in parasite-mediated selection.  相似文献

1. Global change models predict the greatest impact in climate to occur in the northern polar region. Change in temperature will alter individual metabolism and has the potential to change community structure to an unknown degree.
2. The temperature-dependent energy budget of Arctic Daphnia middendorffiana was investigated by measuring respiration rates, ingestion rates and assimilation rates. The scope for growth and reproduction was determined and compared with data from the literature for a clone of Daphnia pulicaria collected in the temperate zone.
3. A difference was observed between the Arctic species and the temperate zone clone in both temperature tolerance, and the energy available for growth and reproduction at various temperatures. A low availability of energy for growth and reproduction indicated that life history patterns as well as physiological mechanisms are important in allowing D. middendorffiana to exist successfully in Arctic environments.
4. The lower available energy for growth compared to Daphnia clones from temperate zones may be detrimental to D. middendorffiana , which might have to compete with species expanding their range under the predicted temperature increase for Arctic regions.  相似文献

1. Small mammal populations were studied in montane evergreen forests in the Nilgiris, southern India, using live-trapping from January 1994 to September 1996. Two sites were selected, one with a single large forest patch and adjoining plantations, and the other with several small forest patches separated by grassland.
2. Nine species were recorded, of which eight were trapped in the forest patches, two in the grasslands and five in plantations. Rattus rattus was the most abundant species (2–36 individuals ha−1) followed by Suncus montanus (0–11 individuals ha−1). Densities of seven other species recorded were very low.
3. Synchrony in various population variables – density, biomass, mean weight, density of adults and adult females, and proportion of adults, adult females and sub-adults – was examined for Rattus rattus populations in the forest patches and plantations. Density and biomass were studied in seven other species recorded at these sites. Spearman's rank order correlation was used as a measure of synchrony between the population variables.
4. Within-site synchrony was higher than between-site synchrony in population characters. Synchrony was also higher between plots within the unfragmented site than they were between plots in the fragmented site. Relatively high synchrony in proportions of adults, adult females and juveniles in the forest patches implied that breeding is probably influenced by climate and food availability, which are seasonal in this habitat.
5. Given the small patch sizes (≈1–10 ha) and low population sizes, asynchrony is likely to be an outcome of demographic and environmental stochasticity, and low dispersal rates may impede establishment of synchrony.  相似文献

1 Studies on chafer assemblages were conducted on two farmland sites in the Terai lowland of Nepal (200 m above sea level) using light traps. During the course of a 2-year field monitoring program, a total of 4503 specimens was captured and an unexpectedly high number of syntopically co-occurring species was found: 52 from Gunganagar (GN) and 36 from Gaindakot (GK), respectively. Highest species abundances and species numbers were found during April and May.
2 Species occurrence was strongly correlated with air temperature and the maximum soil temperature, at least during the pre-monsoon season. However, assemblage structure from the two sites showed significant qualitative and quantitative changes seasonally, as well as from 1 year to the next. Turnover rates between adjacent months were in the range 26–62% (GN) and 37–70% (GK), whereas the turnover from 2004 to 2005 was 25.8% (GN) and 21.4% (GK) respectively.
3 When only dominant and subdominant taxa are considered, the seasonal change in species composition was even more striking.
4 Strong fluctuation in chafer assemblage over time suggests: (i) a possible influence of patchy habitat types and soil working on seasonal assemblage structure and (ii) colonization of suitable habitats (fields) in great part by chance.  相似文献

Aims:  To investigate the effects of fluorescent light intensity, sunlight intensity and temperature on photoreactivation of Escherichia coli after low-pressure (LP) and medium-pressure (MP) ultraviolet (UV) disinfection.
Methods and Results:  Two E. coli strains were irradiated with LP and MP UV lamps, and exposed to various fluorescent light (0–23 kLux) and sunlight intensities (1–80 kLux), and temperatures (4–50°C). Escherichia coli concentrations were enumerated at hourly intervals to determine photoreactivation rates and final photoreactivation levels. Higher photoreactivation rates and levels were observed with increasing fluorescent light intensities, while high sunlight intensity (>12 kLux) caused a one-log decrease in E. coli concentrations. When exposed to near-optimum growth temperatures (23–37°C), photoreactivation levels were higher than those with too high (50°C) or too low (4°C) temperatures. Overall, photoreactivation following MP UV disinfection was lower than that following LP UV disinfection.
Conclusions:  Photoreactivation of bacteria following UV disinfection can be a problem in tropical countries where sunlight is abundant and temperatures are high, unless high sunlight intensity is present or if MP UV disinfection is employed.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  With the increased use of UV disinfection, it is imperative that photoreactivation be taken into account in the design of reactors based on site-specific conditions of temperature and light intensity exposure.  相似文献

1. Physico-chemical conditions and benthic macroinvertebrates were studied in two adjacent alpine streams in the Tyrolean Alps, Austria, for 2 years, and aquatic insect emergence was recorded for 1 year.
2. In the spring-fed system, maximum discharge and increased concentrations of suspended solids, nitrate and particulate phosphorus occurred during snowmelt in June. In the glacier-fed stream, high discharge and strong diel fluctuations in flow and concentrations of suspended solids created a harsh and unstable environment during summer. Glacial ablation, variation in groundwater inflow, and water inputs from tributaries draining calcareous rocks caused water chemistry to vary both seasonally and longitudinally in glacier-fed Rotmoosache.
3. A total of 126 aquatic or semi-aquatic invertebrate taxa were collected, 94 of which were found in the glacier-fed stream and 120 in the spring-fed stream. Chironomid abundance was 2–8 times and taxa richness 2–3 times lower in the glacier-fed stream than in the spring-fed stream, as was the number of chironomid taxa (72 versus 93 total).
4. These results broadly support the conceptual model by Milner & Petts (1994) concerning glacier-fed stream systems. However, single samples and seasonal means showed relatively high invertebrate abundance and richness, especially during winter, indicating a considerable degree of spatial and temporal variability.
5. We suggest that the seasonal shifts from harsh environmental conditions in summer to less severe conditions in autumn and a rather constant environment in winter are an important factor affecting larval development, life-history patterns and the maintenance of relatively high levels of diversity and productivity in glacier-fed streams.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Water temperatures were recorded at hourly intervals in the gravel of a trout spawning area in a small stony stream at depths of 0–20 cm in 1985–86 and 0– 40 cm in 1987.
2. As depth within gravel increased, the size of the daily fluctuations reduced and their time of occurrence was delayed by about 12 min cm−1' in 1985–86 and about 6 min cm−1 in 1987.
3. From October to February mean temperatures at 20 cm depth were, on average, 0.5°C higher than those at the gravel surface. This reflected elevated daily minima more than it reflected elevated daily maxima.
4. From March to July daily minima were lower and daily maxima were higher in the stream than in the gravel. Consequences were: (a) an appreciable increase in mean daily range at all depths in the gravel during the summer, (b) higher daily means (by an average of about 0.4°C) in the water than in the gravel in May to August.

The lion's paw scallop, Nodipecten nodosus, is subject to wide temperature variations on seasonal and short-term scales, and may be exposed to low-salinity events, caused by oceanographic and meteorological processes at its southern distribution limit (Santa Catarina State, Brazil). Such variations may have important implications on the distribution and on aquaculture site selection. The upper and lower temperature tolerances and the percentage of byssal attachment at different temperatures (11 to 35 °C) were studied for spat, juvenile and adult scallops. The lethal and sublethal effects of reduced salinity (13‰ to 33‰) on spat, juvenile and adult scallops were studied at ambient temperature (23.5 °C) and on spat also at low (16 °C) and high (28 °C) temperatures during 96-h bioassays. In addition, the influences of short exposure (1 h) to low salinity (13‰ and 17‰) at different temperatures (16 and 28 °C), and the effects of exposure (2 and 4 h) to high temperature (33 °C) at ambient salinity (33‰) were studied. N. nodosus is a moderately eurythermal but stenohaline tropical species, adults having lower tolerance to high temperature and low salinity than spat. Lethal temperatures for a 48-h exposure (LT50) were 29.8 °C for adult and juveniles, and 31.8 °C for spat. Maximum rate of byssal attachment occurred in a narrower temperature range for juveniles and adults (23 to 27 °C) than for spat (19 to 27 °C), which are suggested as the optimum ranges of temperatures for growth. Lethal salinities (LC50) for a 48-h exposure at ambient temperature were 23.2‰, 23.6‰ and 20.1‰ for adults, juveniles and spat, respectively, but the percent byssal attachment was significantly reduced below salinities of 29‰ indicating that scallops were physiologically stressed. A 1-h exposure to 17‰ was lethal to spat at 28 °C, but at 16 °C there was a 28.5% survival, 96 h after the exposure. Temperatures and salinity in coastal areas of southern Brazil can reach levels leading to sublethal effects, and in some sites, it may surpass the limits of tolerance for the survival of the species.  相似文献

Aim   To identify geographical and climatic correlates of the timing of fruit production in fleshy fruited plant communities.
Location   Global.
Methods   We searched the literature for studies documenting monthly variation in the number of fleshy fruited species bearing ripe fruits in plant communities (i.e. fruit phenologies). From these data, we used circular vector algebra to characterize seasonal peaks in fruit production (mean date, as an angle) and the length of fruiting seasons (as a circular standard deviation). Generalized linear models and circular correlations were used to assess whether latitudinal patterns in fruit phenologies could be explained by variation in temperature, precipitation and actual evapotranspiration (AET).
Results   Dates of peak fruit production and the length of fruiting seasons showed consistent differences with latitude. Annual peaks in fruit production occurred 1 to 3 months after the summer solstice at high-latitude sites in both hemispheres. Fruiting seasonality increased with latitude, indicating that fruiting seasons were longer in the tropics and shorter toward the poles. AET was the best climatic predictor of fruit phenologies. Annual peaks in fruit production were positively associated with annual peaks in AET and temperature, while fruiting seasons were shorter in areas with pronounced annual variation in AET.
Main conclusions   Global patterns in fruiting seasons are associated with global variation in climate. Across the globe, fleshy fruits are produced after annual periods of elevated water–energy availability. Fruiting seasonality is also more pronounced in areas with strongly seasonal water–energy inputs. Therefore, the timing of reproduction in fleshy fruited plant communities appears to be determined, at least in part, by spatial and temporal variation in energy supplies needed to subsidise plant reproduction.  相似文献

Abstract:  Two distinct seasonal forms were found for the common pistachio psylla, Agonoscena pistaciae , the most serious insect pest of cultivated pistachio trees, Pistacia vera in Iran. The two forms are different morphologically as well as biologically. The summer form is of light colour and readily mates and starts egg laying 1–2 days after emergence, whereas, the winter form is larger, generally darker and in reproductive diapause. The first form is observed under long photoperiod, while the second form is induced under a combination of short photoperiod and low temperature. The combination of long photoperiod and warm temperature enhanced post-emergence ovarian development in the winter form, showing a close inverse correlation between pre-oviposition period and increasing temperatures. Both forms of A. pistaciae are adapted to a wide temperature range of 20–30°C for reproduction, and the fecundity of psyllid adults of either summer- or winter forms was found to be very high under experimental conditions.  相似文献

The breeding pattern of the grass rat, Arvicanthis neumanni, was investigated in central Tanzania in 2002/2003 . Nine hundred and forty-seven animals were captured in three age groups: juveniles, sub adults and adults. These age groups were present in the population for an extended duration, but there was an increase in the number of sexually active individuals and juveniles 2–3 months after the onset of the rains (December 2002–May 2003). A peak in reproductive activity occurred between January and April. Litter size ranged between 5.58 ± 0.42 and 6.1 ± 0.26 in two study sites. There were no significant differences in the number of embryos implanted in the right and left horns of the uterus of pregnant females (t22 = 0, P  > 0.05 and t36 = 1.68, P  > 0.05, respectively). Sex ratio of A. neumanni was not skewed to either males or females. Breeding was seasonal and seemed to be associated with seasonal variations in primary productivity, which relates to rainfall patterns.  相似文献

1.  We tested the species diversity–energy hypothesis using the British bird fauna. This predicts that temperature patterns should match diversity patterns. We also tested the hypothesis that the mechanism operates directly through effects of temperature on thermoregulatory loads; this further predicts that seasonal changes in temperature cause matching changes in patterns of diversity, and that species' body mass is influential.
2.  We defined four assemblages using migration status (residents or visitors) and season (summer or winter distribution). Records of species' presence/absence in a total of 2362, 10 × 10-km, quadrats covering most of Britain were used, together with a wide selection of habitat, topographic and seasonal climatic data.
3.  We fitted a logistic regression model to each species' distribution using the environmental data. We then combined these individual species models mathematically to form a diversity model. Analysis of this composite model revealed that summer temperature was the factor most strongly associated with diversity.
4.  Although the species–energy hypothesis was supported, the direct mechanism, predicting an important role for body mass and matching seasonal patterns of change between diversity and temperature, was not supported.
5.  However, summer temperature is the best overall explanation for bird diversity patterns in Britain. It is a better predictor of winter diversity than winter temperature. Winter diversity is predicted more precisely from environmental factors than summer diversity.
6.  Climate change is likely to influence the diversity of different areas to different extents; for resident species, low diversity areas may respond more strongly as climate change progresses. For winter visitors, higher diversity areas may respond more strongly, while summer visitors are approximately neutral.  相似文献
